Football culture isn't always just about the game and its players, sometimes it's about their wives and girlfriends. The most iconic era of WAG culture has to be in the 2006 World Cup in Baden-Baden, Germany. The main subjects were Coleen Rooney, Cheryl Cole, Abbey Clancy and their queen, Victoria Beckham. They were to the tournament what The Plastics were to Mean Girls. They ruled the tabloids, they caused havoc in the town with their excessive drinking and shopping, and were generally said to be a complete distraction. If you have an obsession with the Y2K era, the OG WAGs will serve as the ultimate inspiration for supporting our boys this summer. Think XXL sunglasses, baby tees and tank tops with ironic slogans, mini skirts and a healthy dose of lipgloss—all of which are just as essential now as they were then.

And, whilst it might be 20 years since this era, we're back with WAGs 2.0. From Tolami Benson, Saka's fiancé, to Gabrielle Figueiredo, the wife of Arsenal and Brazil player Gabriel Magalhães, there are many stylish wives and girlfriends supporting this year who have their own brand partnerships and social following. 2. "Mel C-Core" (Not Blokecore)

"Blokecore" was huge in late 2021-22. Starting on TikTok but developing into a major trend around the the time of the last World Cup, it developed into becoming a broad term for generic football styling, despite it really drawing heavy inspiration from '90s British football fashion. Think back to those famous pictures of the charity football game between Blur and Oasis in '96: it was peak '90s athleisure, streetwear style: retro football jerseys, bucket hats, with club scarves and Stone Island jackets. The problem is with such a gendered term, is that it feels exclusionary for women, not to mention people of colour. Who What Wear UK senior fashion and beauty editor for branded content, Felicia Pennant, makes an excellent suggested revisal of the phrase—"for me, as a woman looking at that era, it's Mel C-core. She was the defining image of female football fandom in the '90s. And what's interesting is the evolution of that: back then on the playground, nobody wanted to be Sporty Spice, now she's the one that everyone emulates." So, if you too want to wear your oversized footie jerseys, scarves and sports jackets with your athletic capris and sneakers, just remember who you're really inspired by.

3. "Femme Footale"

Upcyling and personalising old and vintage football shirts has long been a trend, but lately I've noticed brands taking these traditionally 'masculine' garments, and making them ultra pretty and 'feminine'. Wearing a piece from a designer sportswear collaboration is perhaps the best signifier of those in the know. Streetwear labels like Palace and Stüssy have long collaborated with sportswear brands on exclusive shirts, Martine Rose has her iconic Shox trainers with Nike, and Grace Wales Bonner's adidas collections and Sambas are some of the most sought after athleisure garments in the game. But in 2026, there's even more. Miaou x adidas, Puma x Ahluwalia, Slawn x Nike, Umbro by Slam Jam as well as Umbro x Aries—the options are truly endless!

First of all, it's not just in the USA, but Canada and Mexico too, making it more of a North America tour. This means multiple timezones, which can be tricky to track across the pond. Be sure to do your research and be prepared to stay up late to watch certain games. It's also the biggest tournament FIFA have produced, with a whopping 48 teams in the initial knock-out stages, and 104 games. Players we're excited to see return in the England squad are Jude Bellingham, Bukayo Saka, Marcus Rashford and of course, captain Harry Kane, all of which were the highest goal scorers in the World Cup 2022.
If you're wondering on who the favourites to win are, many have their money on France. After their loss in the 2022 final to Argentina, they'll be hungry to take the title this time, plus the nation's main capital team PSG (Paris Saint Germain) just won the Champions League a few weeks ago. Elsewhere in Europe, Spain and Portugal are firm favourites, with a stellar team lineup. Brazil, Germany and Argentina are always a good bet too, but their team isn't as strong as it's been in the past. Naturally, I want to shout out England, whilst they're not the bookies favourite, you never know—could this be the year the Three Lions bring it home? Let's see.

Over the past few years, perfectly fitted, color-coordinated workout sets have evolved into a kind of status symbol. Since the pandemic, brands have generated enormous revenue by appealing to consumers who want their activewear to look just as polished as their designer wardrobes. Labels like ALO, Set Active, Adanola, and Outdoor Voices have grown into major players in the space. But alongside their rise, a quieter shift has been taking shape—one that challenges the idea of the perfectly curated workout look altogether.

Gen Z, in particular, has been subtly reshaping fitness fashion. Instead of sleek, matching sets, they’re embracing a more eclectic, personality-driven approach to dressing for movement. The result is a deliberately mismatched, expressive 2000s activewear style that prioritizes individuality over coordination and pushes back against the polished, brightly colored sets that, at times, can feel more performative than practical.

That shift isn’t happening in a vacuum; it’s being built piece by piece in secondhand shops, on running paths, and inside boutique fitness studios. For Isabella Oday, founder of vintage and archival activewear brand Rummage Stretch, it started with a personal disconnect. “I realized I didn’t like the style of any yoga clothes,” Oday explains, recalling a post-breakup retreat that unexpectedly sparked the idea for the brand. What followed was a return to something more intuitive: old track shorts, vintage Nike tanks, pieces that felt lived-in and personal. “Feeling like an individual with personal style has been sort of missing from this space,” she notes.

Rummage Stretch leans into that absence, embracing what one early write-up described as a “cornucopia of maximalist workout clothing from the late ’90s and ’00s”—an era when getting dressed for a fitness class was less about optimization and more about just showing up.

That sense of individuality is precisely what feels new again. Instead of buying into a single aesthetic, Gen Z is pulling references from everywhere: nostalgia, thrift culture, and even humor. “Nostalgia is a huge part of this trend,” the founder adds, “but it’s also the expressiveness and fun that brings a whole new energy to a previously exhausted workout space.” Rummage Stretch customers, Oday adds, aren’t just dressing for performance; they’re dressing for themselves. “Ultimately, people want to feel good about themselves and feel like themselves.”

The same ethos plays out online, where creators like running influencer Jenna Litner have built a following around deliberately eclectic, personality-first workout looks. For Litner, the shift away from matching sets is less about rejecting style and more about reclaiming it. “I started showcasing [my outfits] more intentionally when I felt fatigued by how homogenous fashion was becoming because of social media,” she says. “It never made sense to put effort into how I dressed in one core part of my life and not the other.”

While you'd think this retro and personality-forward activewear moment is just a pan in the flash, Litner believes it speaks to the broader fatigue everyone is feeling right now. “Gen Z grew up in peak trend culture,” she explains. “With constant access to social media, it became easy to dress in whatever set was trending… instead of what actually felt personal.” The result is an audience that's hungry for her outfits comprising colorful workout shorts, vintage jerseys layered over turtlenecks, neon shorts, and Y2K-style sunglasses.

Most importantly, this evolution in style isn’t just aesthetic—it’s psychological. Litner is candid about the role expression plays in her performance: “I have no shame admitting expression is my number one priority because I perform best when I feel confident.” That confidence can look wildly different from day to day. “Some days I want retro/vintage, some days futuristic, and some days I want to be a fitness Barbie,” she jokes. The point, she emphasizes, is freedom: “Wear whatever helps you get out the door and move your body.”

In fitness spaces, that mindset is becoming increasingly visible. Pilates instructor Taylor Isabelle sees it firsthand in her classes, where the once-dominant matching set is no longer the default. “People want different cuts… halter tops, capris, wide leg leggings,” she says. “When New Yorkers start wearing color, you know fashion is shifting.” Beyond silhouettes, there’s a noticeable change in attitude. Clients aren’t just dressing for the workout—they’re dressing for the experience. “Some have even told me wearing a cute outfit… has improved their performance,” she notes, pointing to the familiar idea that “look good, feel good” still holds weight.

There are also practical reasons behind the shift. As Isabelle points out, changing spending habits is playing a role: “People would rather spend their money on supplements, treatments, and experiences. Therefore, this forces them to use what they already own… and start to mix and match.” In other words, the chaotic gym outfit isn’t just expressive for Gen Z—it’s also resourceful.

What emerges from all of this is a redefinition of what gym style is supposed to do. Gen Z's activewear in 2026 is something messier, more personal, and ultimately more human. A vintage tennis dress paired with worn-in sneakers. A neon sports bra under an oversized graphic tee. An outfit that doesn’t quite “match,” but somehow makes more sense.

In the end, Gen Z isn’t just abandoning the perfectly curated workout set—they’re rejecting the idea that there’s only one way to look put-together. The new gen is turning the gym into something it’s never quite been before: a space not just for movement, but for self-expression. And, of course, wired headphones with a neon polka-dot sports bra in tow.

This year I’ve tested Tala, an eco-conscious affordable activewear brand that uses recycled materials to create stylish, high performance essentials for different types of exercise. It's also the It brand I see on stylish London girls in every spin class I go to.

For reference, I’m 5ft 4, I’m a size 10-12, with a bigger bust. Usually, I’d wear a size M in tops and a S-M in bottoms, depending on the piece. I’m someone who exercises fairly regularly, loving HIIT classes that you find at F45, 1Rebel and Barry’s Bootcamp and the like. But as well as being someone who enjoys keeping fit, I'm a fashion girl at my core. By this I mean I still like serve even when sweating, squatting or even doing a burpee, so refuse to accept that sportswear has to be the least chic thing in your rotation. Actually, as someone who has been known to wear a flared legging to the office, and is partial to a quarter zip pullover, I'd consider myself a bit of an expert when it comes to activewear pieces fit for wearing on and off the treadmill.

And with that, I tried on much of Tala's collection for 2026, and these four looks were the ones I loved most. These were my honest thoughts.

The Best Tala Pieces for 2026

1. Dayflex Wrap Flared Yoga Pant + Zip-Through Sports Jacket

My review: If you were to see me at the gym, there’s a 99% chance I’ll be wearing black. Classic and forever-cool, I feel my most comfortable in an all-black ensemble. Despite usually being an avid slim legging person, lately I’ve really enjoyed flared leggings, just as its a style I'm happy wearing out the office. These I've tried on are part of the new Dayflex range, in a 30’’ leg and size S, the length is absolutely perfect. As the name suggests, these have been designed for yoga, which I think they'd be great for. If you're more of a runner or enjoy spin class, I would recommend a slimmer silhouette, as, by definition and design, they're less streamlined and either flap in the breeze as you run, or can get caught in your bike pedals. In terms of fit, they’re a little tight around my waist, but I love how they look when I have top layered over the waistband.

The overlapping ‘V’ shape waistband sculpts my stomach slightly, which I love, and the high zip jacket in a M feels snug in the way that it’s supposed to. I could have gone up a size in both, but there’s nothing worse than baggy activewear, so I’m happy with how these feel. Special shout out to the square neck sports bra and tank top, which snatches and lifts my upper body. I’m a 34E, and am wearing a size M bra and top, so if you have a bigger bust like me, and don't want a huge cleavage, I'd recommend sizing up.

2. Dayflex Wrap Legging + Cocoon Zip Through Hoodie

My review: As you can probably tell from the selection of items I've chosen to style in these four looks, I'm not usually one for vibrant colours. As mentioned, I wear black to workout most of the time, but the odd occasion I fancy venturing out of my all-black comfort zone, it's likely to be a shade of brown, cream or white. Tala's colour palettes are sumptuous and rich, offering earthy greens, buttermilk shades and, as shown here, a few tonal coffee hues. When testing the Dayflex Wrap High Waisted Legging, I went for mocha brown, and paired it with complementary tones like this hoodie in Oat Marl, and I'm really into how they work together.

But how do the pieces fit? The leggings, which are an icon for the brand, I was really impressed by. Cleverly designed with a sweetheart overlapping 'V' shape waistband, they sit perfectly on the waist and ensure comfort even when doing core exercises like crunches (which I find isn't always the case). I had the full length size, and they are slightly too long, so I'd recommend getting the 7/8 style if you're on the shorter side.

The hoodie fits exactly like its name suggests, like a cocoon. I really like this silhouette, and honestly have't tried one like this before: slim and cropped on the waist, but with these balloon-like arms and large hood, it's really hitting the mark in terms of being sweats with a subtle difference. It's also an incredibly soft cotton.

I'd also like to call out the sports bra which isn't pictured, the Dayflex Bandeau sports bra, which I styled in Americano. As someone with a bigger bust, I have to say Tala's bras probably aren't supportive enough for me to do high intensity training in them, but this one particularly is great for lower impact workouts, and just felt great to wear. It also had adjustable straps on the back help you get the best fit for your size, which I often find is overlooked with basic activewear bras.

3. Dayflex Capri Legging + 365 Boat Neck Top

My review: This is probably my favourite look of all four, simply because I know I'd wear each piece outside of the gym. I've long been looking for a simple boat neck top for everyday, and this is a great option for work, to work-out. I don't normally love a tight-tight top, often feeling a little exposed, but there's something about Tala's compressed fit pieces that make me feel good about an ultra-slim silhouette. I think with this top specifically, it's the extra thick fabric, which feels more like a warm hug than a way to reveal more than I want. This being said, I do worry that this extra thick fabric will make me quite warm, but for hiking in winter, or a gentle stretch session, this would be perfect.

Now let's talk about the leggings. Full disclosure, I am a capri legging addict. Despite this shorter length being a little passé for a decade or so in activewear trends, I've noticed that it's really making a comeback lately. The deep waistband sits at the perfect spot on my waist, right on the tummy-button, which feels quite '90s and chic. Most capri styles I find have a small split on each hem at the side, but I think not having this (like these) is much neater. I also love their seamless design, which makes them feel less like activewear in their aesthetic. Personally, I would rather wear these for lower impact exercises, where I don't need to wear a bulky pair of running trainers, but can switch it for a slimmer trainer silhouette, or even my Nike Air Rifts like pictured here.

4. Dayflex Floaty Shorts + Elevated T-Shirt

My review: This is honestly one the softest, best-fitting t-shirts I've ever tried on. And as you can imagine with my job, I have tried and tested a lot of t-shirts in my time! Usually, I wouldn't wear a standard cotton t-shirt for the gym, just because it's less breathable and has a heavier weight than those options made in recycled polyester. However, when paired with the shorts, this is the type of thing I'd choose to wear for padel or tennis, which come the spring months, I tend to play every fortnight. I love this soft grey colour as I'm terrible at keeping white, white, but the downside to grey, as many of us know too well, is that it shows the sweat, so I would say this is best for less active sports, or an option for a throw-on tee for the post-class coffee or juice. In terms of its fit and shape, it's slightly oversized, without being overbearing. The arms are a little more fitted, and the ribbed crew neck feels thick and sturdy.

As this look for me was less about my usual work-out routine, and more to showcase the extra pieces Tala offer, I wanted to show two very different options for the bottom half. The Dayflex Floaty Shorts are definitely the more sporty option: they're loose and oh-so comfortable, so perfect for those that like to avoid tighter silhouettes like cycling shorts and leggings. I love the zip-up pocket, this is a minor detail, but I don't think I've ever tried a pair of sports shorts that have a zip-up hidden pocket before. Usually it's a secret flap, which isn't great for valuable items (airpods case, phone, jewellery etc). So this is definitely something that impressed me.

On top of these, I styled this look with the Everyday Tailored Trousers, which I was also most impressed by. Not many activewear brands do fashion or loungewear pieces so well. The elasticated waist gives the comfort, but the wide leg and pinstripe design feels very on point to sartorial trends of late. I would definitely wear these in the office, at the weekend et al, but it goes without saying that they're not so fit for exercise.

With the new year now in full swing, I'm keen to set some personal goals, kick-start fresh habits and actually set aside time to work on myself. Getting back into a new gym routine is high on my priority list, as not only do I want to keep my heart healthy and my body feeling toned, but I also love the feeling of endorphins I get from a good, sweaty workout. I typically mix things up with cardio, weights, floor work and yoga for full-body conditioning, but admittedly, I did fall off the wagon a little over the festive period. H&M is one of the biggest players on the high street and is constantly at the forefront of trends, as well as offering solid wardrobe staples and affordable items which are deceptively expensive-looking. The brand has been designing its workout-friendly Move line for several years, and this season, the collection is inspired chiefly by hot Pilates, infrared saunas and cold plunges (all of which I'm looking to introduce to my weekly exercise sessions in 2026). Aesthetically, this collection is all about '90s minimalism: clean lines, sculpting silhouettes, smoothing fabric and pared-back colours (hello, ink black, ivory white, soft sand and pomegranate), powered by a new fabric H&M is pioneering: SculptMove.

“This collection is about glowing from the inside out, facing the future with purpose and power and feeling excited. We wanted to channel all the energy, anticipation and transformation that comes with starting a new year into pieces that will make you feel and look like the best version of yourself," says Marie Fredros, head of design at H&M Move.

For context, I am 5'8" and typically take a size 12, medium or large, which suits my height, shape and curves. I tried on everything in a Medium, which felt spot-on and true to size thanks to the compressive nature of both the sports tops and leggings. The H&M Move collection is offered from XS to XXL, which, according to the size and fit guide, should benefit those looking for pieces from a UK 6 to a 22, catering to a wide range of body types and needs. 1. Sculptmove Sports Jacket + Vest Top + Leggings + Waterproof Jewellery

My Review: I'm not typically one for an all-white look (I'm a coffee drinker, after all), but this soft ivory-toned set felt like exactly what I need for 2026: a clean slate, fresh start and clear perspective for my workout goals. The base of the look is comprised of H&M Move's new signature Sculptmove pieces, including a vest top and leggings and finished with a bodycon Sports Jacket. The fabric feels buttery soft on the skin, and each piece promises to be moisture-wicking, quick-dry and breathable, which is necessary when getting a real sweat on.

I loved the hug-like fit of each of the items. Leggings that roll down and sports bras that don't compress my chest adequately are my biggest ick when it comes to activewear, and these pieces felt like they wouldn't fall into that category. The jacket has a slim-fit shape and short, stand-up collar, as well as full-length arms with thumb-holes for that extra bit of comfort and coverage on chilly days.

To complete the outfit (and for the others you'll see below), I opted for long white ankle socks (from a five-pack) and a pair of chunky white-and-silver trainers. As far as high-street trainers go, these felt premium and comfortable, but truthfully, I know I would normally opt for a tried-and-tested sports-specialist brand for a sneaker that can go the distance. These will get you to your morning classes just fine, however.

Cleverly, H&M is now offering waterproof jewellery made of 100% stainless steel, so you can still add a hint of shine to your 'fit without the worry of it tarnishing or turning your skin a funky shade of green. The simple huggie hoop earrings and snake-chain necklace are a highlight. All in all, I really liked the clean lines and fresh hue of this full look, and I feel like it would be perfect for Pilates and yoga sessions.

My Review: For those seeking a punchy, bright and head-turning gym ensemble, might I suggest this fuchsia-pink set? Admittedly, the hoodie itself is an ever-so-slightly different shade from the sports bra and leggings (the hoodie is a few shades lighter), so this is worth noting if you were seeking something truly monochromatic. Otherwise, you can opt for the Sculptmove tee or sports jacket in the same hue for a head-to-toe pink moment.

The hoodie feels warm, chunky and soft, the cropped fit is modern and flattering and I love the classic kangaroo pocket and loose feel; it's easy to whip over your head pre and post-workout.

The leggings have a high-waisted cut, which I liked for that extra touch of coverage on my abdomen. 3. Water-Repellent Padded Sports Jacket + Sculptmove Sports Vest Top + High-Waisted Leggings + Weights

My Review: Next up, I gave this tonal taupe look a whirl. I do love a look that feels like an extension of my everyday capsule wardrobe, and so this neutral but modern colourway is something I naturally gravitated towards.

I tried on the Sculptmove Sports Vest Top and matching High-Waisted Leggings (having already loved them in the ivory colourway), and teamed them with the corresponding Water-Repellent Padded Sports Jacket, which was a true match in colour (a win!). There's even a two-pack of wrist weights in the same beige tone, so you can add a bit of resistance to your workout, stylishly.

The jacket was a favourite of mine, as the light padding and weather-repellent fabric would mean I have no excuse not to step outside and take that short walk to the gym, whatever Mother Nature throws at me. The square cut, funnel neck, cropped cut and discreet side pockets make it look ultra-modern, timeless and chic, and it will effortlessly pair with infinite leggings and cycling-short looks. This is the outfit I adored the most. It felt like the most "me", and the dark, biscuit-y shade will stand up to frequent wear, sweat and weekly wash cycles.

4. Sculptmove Sports Top + Cycling Shorts + Tote Bag

My Review: Last but not least, I tested this sleek, minimal and dare I say quite sexy two-piece in black. Comprised of the Sculptmove Sports Top with long sleeves and the Sculptmove Sports Cycling Shorts, this ensemble would be just the ticket for a dance class or gentle weights session.

The long-sleeve cut of the top features thumb holes (quite '90s, no?) and a chic square neckline. The hem is neither cropped nor long, but right in the middle, which means it teams perfectly with the cycle shorts, which have a regular cut, if you're comfortable showing a flash of midriff. Going back to the top, it does, in fact, have bust support, so you might not need a bra too (depending on how much bust support you require).

Black is, of course, a fail-safe shade for both curated day-to-day wardrobes and athleisure, as it pairs with everything and can withstand stains, sweat and the perils of constant daily wear. I'm saving this set for warmer days when I dare to get the pins out. I also checked out the frosted-white tote bag, which was easy to throw over my shoulder, apt for holding all of my sweaty items post-shower and even large enough for a towel and water bottle, too. Ideal!

When it comes to the world of sport, style isn’t something that typically quantifies someone’s performance. But, when you look at someone like Serena Williams wearing a denim mini skirt at the US Open or Sha’Carri Richardson sprinting around the track in a full set of acrylic nails, you can’t help but pay attention. It’s precisely this reason why I’m keeping a closer eye on the pieces I wear when I’m working out. I’m not an elite athlete, let alone a novice one. (My exercise regimen starts with hot girl walks and ends with bi-weekly reformer Pilates classes.) But should that hinder me from looking considered and, dare I even say, chic when sweating?

Adanola is a viral activewear brand that shares this sentiment exactly. Founded over a decade ago, the Manchester-based label has quickly become one of the biggest go-to spots for sports bras and leggings in the UK for its softer approach to gym gear. Amongst exceptionally comfortable materials that offer both stretch and support, refined cuts that come in a wide range of sizes and a loyal base of celebrity adherents that include Kendall Jenner, you’ll notice Adanola thrives in creating modern silhouettes that are rendered in beautifully tonal shades.

Those who turn to brands like Leset for well-crafted and thoughtfully coloured wardrobe fundamentals and Aeyde for pared-back and intentionally textured footwear will find a kindred spirit in Adanola’s use of pigment. I’m not someone who typically finds myself endeared to finicky design elements like multiple zips, cross-body straps or waist-cinching boning, so having a brand that excludes these pieces from its offerings whilst maintaining an air of effortless elegance is really important to me as a consumer. Better still, the mutable palette means I can easily pull together a sophisticated workout outfit without thinking too hard. (Because an hour class is strenuous enough, let alone expending energy styling a look!)

What’s more, these are styles refined enough to wear from a mat class to my monthly brunch catch-up with my girlfriends. The fabric is designed to be moved in, which is great for days when I need to run errands after exercising, but still want to look smoothed and sculpted whilst doing so.

With all these factors in mind, it felt entirely right that I turned to Adanola to replenish my athleisure collection for 2026. But how did the brand live up to the hype? My Review: Basics are the building blocks of any great ensemble. Once you’ve nailed the fundamentals, anything you layer on top of it will simply sing. When we’re talking about activewear, these flourishes usually consist of a pair of trending trainers and a functional bag like the bumbag-esque Pocket bag from Miu Miu. Still, the point remains.

In terms of the staple styles Adanola offers, you can’t overlook the brand’s Ultimate range. Particularly, the Ultimate Leggings and Ultimate Short Sleeve Top. As the name suggests, these pieces are the superlative style in Adanola’s entire collection and are designed for “doing everything, every day”, as the brand says on its website. Here, I’m pictured wearing both in a size medium. For context, I’m usually a UK 10 and stand at around 5’5” high, so you’ll typically see me cuffing, hemming or folding most trouser hems. Such was the case for these leggings.

Though it’s something I’ve become accustomed to, I want to caveat this for those who typically take their standard size, as I’ve found a few mixed reviews when it comes to leg lengths from my fellow editors who have also tested the brand. And, because Adanola doesn’t have any retail stores, you really are stabbing in the dark when it comes to selecting the correct size, especially since there are three lengths (regular, tall and ⅞) and eight sizes (XXS - XXXL) to choose from. In saying that, they do fit really well through the calf and thigh and also offer a compressing sensation that truly makes you feel more athletic.

As for the top, I didn't necessarily love the short sleeve as much as the leggings. As someone with a bigger bust, I found the t-shirt to be quite constrictive, which is saying something considering the fabric is designed to be skin-tight. I also found the seam along the shoulder to be cropped at an awkward angle, which led to a really stiff and strained feeling around the top of my bicep. I would’ve enjoyed it more if the tee had been cut more generously, as the fabric did sit quite heavily on top of my skin because of the taut finish.

2. Ultimate Wrap-Over Leggings + Ultimate Square Neck Bra

My Review: Another thing I really like about Adanola is that the brand really considers its designs. Instead of boasting superfluous design elements like a built-in holder for your phone, because whoever uses that slip that always appears on the side of leggings anyway, or panels that are designed to add an element of sex appeal where it’s not required, the shapes it puts out are intentional in working with your body’s natural curves and aiding movement.

The Ultimate Wrap-Over Leggings and Square-Neck Sports Bra are perfect examples of this. On the latter, I’m wearing a wrap top over it, as I found the neckline to be a little too risqué for my taste. (Cleavage at a 9 AM gym class is not what I had in mind for my activewear upgrade!) However, I did find the top to still be really supportive, despite my bigger chest size, and still kept my boobs sitting really nicely throughout the duration of a class.

The leggings also boasted this undulating curve, which is great for those who want to display a glint of skin. You’d think this wavy hemline would mean you’d be constantly adjusting throughout your workout, but I never found myself reaching to pull the band up once. Better still, it added an extra layer of support around my tummy, which was great for perfecting my form in tabletop positions.

3. Impact Seamless Racer Back Bra + Impact Seamless Leggings + Oversized Pocket Zip Through Fleece

My Review: The intersection of sports and style is always one ripe for innovation. Think: On’s CloudTec® technology for better strides, Nike’s Dri-FIT technology for sweat-wicking runs and even the way Adidas adopted the three-stripes as a signature branding tool. Now, Adanola has entered this cannon with a revolutionary new category launch: Impact.

Like Ultimate, this range is designed specifically for movement in mind. The main point of difference, as the name hints at, is the fact that these pieces are made for higher-intensity workouts in mind. Think: HIIT classes, spin, interval training and boxing. These pieces are made unique because of their bonded edges, contoured segments, a smoothed finish, and breathable panels. Intentionally seamless for a sleeker and more dynamic silhouette, the brand promises the new range “provides support through every rep and set, adapting effortlessly to every motion”.

Whilst I’ve always found Adanola to be supportive of my lower-intensity Pilates classes, this new Impact range certainly hit the mark for me on days when I wanted to break out into a bigger sweat. Thankfully, the fabric still felt buttery soft and lightweight, despite being compressive and contouring. I wore the Seamless Racer Back Bra in an XL, and although it was a bit low-cut, I enjoyed the fact that it had thick adjustable straps that could alter the level of support. I did think the buckle was slightly clunky and not as chic as the options available, so this is something to consider, as I regret not getting the tank top to layer over.

The leggings were really lovely, but I did have a slight gripe when my sock line showed underneath, a factor that comes down to their second-skin finish. The real star of the show was this ultra-cuddly fleece. With a lined interior and incredibly comfortable texture, this is the kind of thing that will make your weekend dog walks and early morning trots to get a takeaway coffee all the more enticing.

As a fashion editor, my interest in clothing trickles into all parts of my wardrobe. The working wardrobe, the weekend wardrobe, my professional self and my party self—whether I’m running errands or just simply running—I like to look and feel good every time I get dressed.

And this is also the case when I exercise. There was a time when you’d go to the gym in an old, oversized, tatty T-shirt—often the one you wore for bed the night before or that you saved for painting and decorating. Not anymore. Fitness gear has really developed in the last decade, and those serious about exercise are now serious about what they wear to exercise in too, because ultimately, our workout wear can be so closely linked to performance.

At the forefront of this evolution of fitness fashion is On. Everyone in the fitness world seems to be an On fanatic. Why? Because it’s just so good. Whilst yes, I love her music, I’ve always been captivated by her gymnastics and dance talent, too. Her approach to movement and exercise goes far beyond conventional training activities like yoga and pilates (which are always good), but also pole dancing and martial arts. Together, FKA twigs and On envision reframing training as a holistic experience and want to inspire people to experiment with various types of movement that break the mold of traditional training (be it HIIT, core, weight training, yoga). Which is why this partnership makes so much sense.

Naturally, as a person who loves exercise, I wanted to style and trial the collection, so I put three looks to the test for three different at-home mat workouts. Scroll to see what I wore and read my review of the pieces.

Style Notes: There are so many wonderful different colours in this collection, and I'd usually encourage you to mix and match different colours on top and bottom, but for just one of my looks, I wanted to do monochrome. I chose Mulberry, a mix of deep purple and a very soft reddish, warm brown, which feels particularly autumn-appropriate.

I’m usually more of a leggings girl, and here I’m wearing the Movement Tights Long (they come as shorts too), which are the perfect length as I love to show a bit of ankle. They hug my waist in the right place—not too tight, but not loose—and have bonded hems which make the construction clean of multiple seams. On top, because I’m doing cardio, I’ve gone for the Movement Crop instead of the Movement Long-T Crop—it just keeps me a bit cooler. I have a large bust, so I find that just wearing a bra doesn't give me enough coverage or support, especially when jumping around (like this!), but the tank is the perfect in-between to make me feel secure but covered. Special mention has to be made for my finishing touch: the 1/2 Zip Jacket in Spice. This hot-orange hue was made to be worn with the warm brown. It’s a match made in heaven.

Style Notes: I’m no yogi, but I really rely on yoga for full-body stretching and mindfulness. Not only this but it helps build my core stability, mobility and flexibility, which I’ve grown more conscious of since turning 30. My at-home yoga and flow practices tend to be short (up to 30 minutes) and not too challenging. Because of this, I like to wear a long-sleeved crop like the Movement Long-T Crop for extra warmth in winter, with biker shorts. The seamless Movement Tights Short have an ultra-high-waist fit, which, like the leggings in the collection, fit like a glove; they feel compressed without being tight and have the stretch needed to feel like you're not restricted when switching poses. Style Notes: Weight training is something I’ve only picked up in the past year or two; the idea of choosing exercise for health and strength purposes instead of weight loss is really a new thing for me. When lifting weights, I tend to do a lot of squats, so I need squat-proof leggings that keep me covered even when they’re super stretched. Again, the Movement Tights are my go-to for this. Thanks to what I was wearing, however, this experience has become one of my fondest memories from a recent trip I took to Riviera Maya with Left on Friday.

Growing up, I had two major hobbies: after-school sports and shopping. At the time, the quote “shopping is my cardio” was everywhere, so I guess you could say I was being active in both scenarios. As someone who's a regular at reformer classes, there’s nothing worse than not feeling your best mid-workout. With most classes being under an hour, there isn’t much time to get back into the right mindset if you fall out of it. When I'm wearing a top that isn’t quite holding everything together or my socks have me slipping everywhere, my workout can be easily ruined. I workout five days a week—from spin class to high intensity work out, I mean it when I say I love to move my body. The holidays are approaching. This tends to be the happiest time of year for some, but with this jolly season also comes daylight savings, cooler temperatures, sweet treats… In other words, it’s a time when a number of us find it harder to stay fit and stick to our regular workout routines. We could all use a little extra motivation to stay active during the cooler months, and Gunnar Peterson, a personal trainer and F45 Training’s chief of athletics, has got us covered. 

Having been in the fitness industry for 30 years, Peterson is what we could consider a workout guru in Hollywood. He’s trained some of the biggest names, such as Sylvester Stallone, The Rock, Khloé Kardashian, Jennifer Lopez, Mark Wahlberg, and countless others. With a deep passion for fitness and training, Peterson believes that a lot of people have misconceptions about getting "fit.” His motto is to get started right now and not to wait for a certain event. "The more you wait, the more you’re doing yourself a disservice,” he says. 

During our chat about all things fitness and how to step up my workout game, he let me in on a few secrets and tips on how to stay active throughout this season. Our conversation left me feeling super inspired to get up off the couch, put my holiday cookies down (some of them, at least), and stick to my workouts. Keep reading to learn more about all of the fitness gems that Peterson shared with me. 

Find a New Routine, or Try a New Class.

During this time of year, we often try to stick to the workout regimens that work, but as the new season comes in, so shall a new workout routine. Peterson says, "It’s a great time to turn over the reins, and instead of trying to stick to your own regimen, think about taking a class or a class that has a definitive start and end time.” He even recommends his F45 classes that incorporate HIIT (high-intensity interval training) in just 45 minutes. "F45 is something that gives you strength training, cardio, and a warm-up to prevent injury. Do some of those classes and you will be dialed in by the end of the holidays. F45 has a cardio and a strength day, but the way it’s set up, you can progress it and regress it,” Peterson says. 

Find a Happy Balance Between Discipline and Indulgence.

With the holidays around the corner, most of us might be popping some bubbly and foregoing our normal diets because… It’s a time to celebrate, duh. However, Peterson stresses the importance of balance and not throwing our gym progress away for the sake of the holidays. "Don’t let all of the wheels come off. If you’re going to eat bad, make sure to maintain your workouts [and] get proper sleep,” he says. "If you’re going to drink alcohol, make sure you’re going to eat right. Don’t skip the workouts, eat out, and drink.” 

Treat Working Out as a Nonnegotiable.

This is one that I struggle with the most—consistency. I’ll be on a cleanse for about 21 days without even thinking of eating bad, but then the next month, I fall off and perpetuate this horrible cycle with me and my body. For Peterson, it’s about making the commitment and keeping your word when it comes to that workout you promised you would do. "If you put it on your calendar, don’t leave it as a question mark or a maybe. Say, ‘I’m doing this,’ and leave it as a nonnegotiable. If you leave it as a TBD, you have a higher chance of missing it,” he says.

Put in Equal Effort for Dieting and Training.

We’ve all heard of the 80/20 rule. Some claim that in order to achieve your fitness goals, 80% of that comes from diet, and 20% comes from exercising. I’ve always had mixed feelings about that, and Peterson believes that it’s actually 50/50. "You can’t out-train a bad diet,” he says. "If you have a terrible diet, you can’t out-train it. If you have a lame training program, I don’t care how good your food is. You won’t have the physique you’re looking for from an aesthetic standpoint. The closer you get to your end goal, the nutrition plays a bigger role, but when you’re just starting out, put equal efforts into both.”

No Gym, No Problem. You Can Exercise Anywhere.

My favorite excuse for not working out is always something like, "Well, I’m on vacation, and I don’t have a gym to go to out here.” But according to Peterson, there is absolutely no excuse for not working out, even without equipment: "I think it’s about the sequence of the movements. If you have nothing or you’re in a hotel room, do a set of push-ups. Do a set of high-knees, crunches, and repeat. You can do an upper-body push, a core movement, and cardio, and you can tweak them as needed.” 

When It Comes to Your Fitness Goals, Shoot for the Stars.

If you think you have an outrageous fitness goal, Peterson believes you should stick with it and never settle for less. You just might reach the goal, and if not, you won’t fall that short. "I would say shoot for 100%. Don’t say that’s impossible. I would say shoot for training four to six days a week, and if you get three to four, you’re good. If you go and say, ‘I’ll do three’ and you get two, then you’ll struggle. If you shoot for a 100%, you’ll aim at 80%,” he says.

Almost every runner has a dream of participating in a marathon at some point in their journey. I fell in love with running during the pandemic, and now, it’s one of my main sources of exercise. So I decided to sign up for a half-marathon in 2023. Since I’m new to the sport, I never miss an opportunity to learn more about how I can improve my running. That said, I got the chance to chat with Olympian and long-distance runner Molly Seidel about her tips for new runners and what she’s learned throughout her career. 

As someone who has been running since she was 12 years old and professionally since 2017, Seidel dreamed of going to the Olympics and winning a gold medal. Running has always been second nature to her and a form of relief. "It’s the thing that makes my brain work. I feel like my best self when I’m in motion. I feel blessed that the thing that I love most is the thing I happen to be pretty good at,” Seidel explains. "I truly think running is the greatest sport in the world, and it’s wonderful that everyone—no matter where you come from—could come in this sport and find their own way with it.”

Recently, she became the spokesperson for the Women’s Sports Foundation x Michelob Ultra Run Fund. The partnership is centered around trying to increase parity in the sport by providing training for women and nonbinary runners who are running their first marathon as well as awarding them NYC Marathon bibs for 2023.

Seidel made history in the 2020 Olympics as the third American woman ever to get a medal in the Olympic marathon, and she has learned quite a few things over the years that can be beneficial for runners at any level. Keep scrolling to see what advice she gives to runners today. 

Listen To Your Body

I’ve read countless articles and watched tons of videos of people sharing what works for them, and more often than not, the routines and intensive training schedules that I’ve tried to follow end up failing. Seidel believes that our routines should be tailored to our bodies since they are our greatest teachers. "Everybody’s approach is different. You can have the best training schedule in the world, but if it doesn’t fit with how your body works, it doesn’t matter. The way I approach my training is very different from other runners. Listen to your body when you need a rest day,” she says. 

Give Yourself Mental and Physical Rest

Running frequently can be quite taxing on the body, and most people who run realize that rest days are crucial in order to give your body a break. Seidel believes in the importance of resting your body as well as your mind. "Find a place for different kinds of running. There will be days you will be going all out as hard as you can, but balance that out with going out and meeting up with friends. That’s what makes running so special—it can be so many different things,” explains Seidel. "You can be fully dedicated and focused, and there can be days where you’re just going out and having fun.”

Do Something Completely Different on Rest Days

While some people consider rest days a day to get in a short run, Seidel suggests doing something you love that may be outside of running. "A lot of times, I go for a walk in the woods. I really like reading, so I’ll spend the day reading different books that have nothing to do with running. It has to be something completely different,” she says. 

Know Your Strengths

Oftentimes, when we try to achieve a certain goal or status, we tend to compare our strengths and weaknesses to others. Seidel recommends not doing that and instead looking within ourselves for our superpowers. "I would get really down on myself that I couldn’t do certain workouts, and then I realized that it’s a strength to know exactly how my body functioned and knowing that I may not have the same body or same brain as someone, but it’s still pretty special, and it can do pretty special things,” explains Seidel. 

Run your own race

Personally, I get intimidated when I see running times of other runners, and it makes me feel like I’m not a "real” runner. But Seidel stresses the importance of being able to run your own race and stay in your own lane. "My breakthrough in this sport didn’t come until the point that I got out of the mentality that I needed to do things the way that everybody else does them and finally started doing things the way that I needed to, and only then did I start to find success,” she says. This is something that Seidel lives by, and it helped shape her perspective when she was competing in the 2020 Olympics. "There was so much stress and pressure leading into that race. … Knowing that the minute I crossed this start line I got to call myself an Olympian, that allowed me to race without nerves, and it opened me up to an incredible experience,” she says. 

Finding good running shoes has been a case of trial and error for me. These are super comfy, and they make every run feel like a breeze. 

As someone who has the most sensitive stomach of all time, these energy gels have been a savior to me. I take one 30 minutes into my run, and it gives me the energy I need without the hassle of a bad stomach ache. 

I'm always looking to add more protein to my diet, and this powder does that and so much more. It gives me the energy boost I need, and it's not as grainy as most of the powders I've tried in the past.

The other day, I went for a run, and about five minutes in, I had to start walking. I wore an activewear set that I typically reserve for low-impact exercises, and it did not support me well enough. When I took off in a light jog, I didn't notice a problem, but as the run continued, I had to continuously lift up my shirt to keep myself from being exposed. I'm a DD, so wearing the right sports bra is of the utmost importance to me. A few days later, I went for a run in a set that didn't have a pocket, leading to me put my key in my sports bra and lose it along the way. After buying a replacement key, I realized it was time for some new activewear.

How was the class?

I always have an amazing time at Barry's because I can get a really good sweat and have the focus to get through a weight-lifting set without getting distracted. For this reason, I make sure to stop by on a weekly basis.

Did the activewear set meet your expectations?

The leggings are double lined, so I felt very well supported throughout and loved that there was room in the pocket for my phone when we were moving from the treadmills to the weight floor and a zipper in the back to solve my key problem. My only regret is that this bra ran just a bit big for me, so I would size down if you're thinking about purchasing it, but other than that, it's one of the greatest sets I've brought to Barry's with me. Plus, it matches the red light ambiance.

Up next, I wanted to try a unique approach to fitness, so I decided to try The Ness, a trampoline-based class that I've seen all over Instagram lately.

How was the class?

The Ness was the most fun I've had working out in a long time. Everyone was smiling and enjoying all of the jumping we were doing throughout the experience. If you ever are bored with your workout routine and want to get a good sweat while having fun, you have to try this.

Did the activewear set meet your expectations?

Usually, when I wear a V-neck sports bra in a workout class that involves bending over, I have to worry about something falling out and continuously pull up my top. This was not the case and I was finally able to just focus on my performance. It's crazy that this feels like the bare minimum from activewear, but I was so grateful to be trying out a brand that worked well for what I was doing.

If you think Pilates is easy, I challenge you to get through just the first 10 minutes at Forma Pilates. You will be shaking. No Pilates method has ever pushed me harder, so I have to vouch for this one. I'm always sore after visiting their studio.

Did the activewear set meet your expectations?

I've seen this Fabletics set all over my Instagram feed, so I was excited to try it. The bra fit my chest perfectly and Pilates is another exercise that often has me adjusting what I'm wearing as I move, but this one stayed snug. I now need this set in several colors.

When you're a fashion editor, the items in your closet are always fighting for the spotlight. I've always had a love-hate relationship with working out at the gym. To be fair, that's probably because I only know how to use 20% of the machines (aka the treadmill and the Stairmaster). As someone who thoroughly enjoys running, I'm always a little nervous before going to a workout class because I never know what to expect. I've tried so many new workouts, and nothing usually sticks, but incorporating strength training into my workout regimen has been a goal of mine, especially after I learned about all of its benefits.

Recently, I was fortunate enough to try the Max Effort Training (MET) workout with strength trainer and creator Thea Hughes. It's a mix of strength training and functional and dynamic movements. Hughes started MET to help her friends to feel as empowered in their bodies as they do in their careers.

"I've also struggled with working hard and not seeing results," Hughes tells me. "I've struggled with nutrition and understanding what to eat. I've struggled with not knowing how to put it all together without feeling overwhelmed. And so I created MET as an interactive, customized, educational program that isn't a quick fix or just a one-off workout class, but a framework that teaches people how. I also wanted to be able to introduce friends through movement. A workout requires you to be vulnerable, so once you've experienced something like that with others, you automatically share a bond. I love making new acquaintances feel like close friends."

What Happened During the Workout

We started off the workout by doing some stretches, calisthenics, and mobility movements to prevent any injuries before we started the actual strength training exercises. Our class was small and intimate, which was great because I tend to have trouble when I'm learning new movements, so I need all the TLC I can get from a trainer. Hughes introduced each workout by doing a quick demonstration for us, and then she had us choose a partner instructed us to stay at each station for two minutes before transitioning to the next station.

Hughes is big on calisthenics, and for good reason. Each movement in the workout is strategically planned to cater to your overall wellbeing. "The idea is basically 'mobility before stability before movement' as put by Michael Boyle," Hughes says. "Your warm-up should first mobilize a joint's range of motion followed by dynamic exercise prep—working through movement patterns that you'll be doing in the workout. Calisthenic exercises, meaning bodyweight, allow us to control the integrity of movement and joint alignment and introduce the idea of developing stability before we add external load (weights). This approach can also add to our sense of self-efficacy. Come time for the workout, you're already familiar with and confident in the movement patterns."

Each station incorporated weights, which normally freak me out, but shockingly, this workout was fun. We did a mix of lateral lunges, chest presses, hip thrusts, plank holds, and kettlebell squats. If someone told me a few years ago that I would like doing chest presses, I would have laughed, but during the class, I actually enjoyed the movements. I felt so accomplished as I finished each station.

Hughes sees a big connection between strength training and an increase in confidence. "Strength training is really so important to maintaining and improving bone density, especially as we age and especially for women," she says. "The slower, controlled nature of strength training is also a fantastic way to decrease cortisol (i.e. our stress hormone), providing us with more energy, better digestion, and improved sleep while increasing lean muscle mass, providing muscle tone and definition, and reducing injuries. Most importantly, I love the sense of self-efficacy strength training provides—the 'Wow, I just did that!' feeling. There are few things that compare to building mastery of your body—controlling how it moves, how it feels, and also knowing how to listen to what it needs."

Typically, if I tried these movements on my own at the gym, I would have difficulty determining if my form was correct. But Hughes was there to guide me through every workout to make sure I was doing the movements efficiently. Her guidance gave me the confidence to continue and helped me keep good form throughout the movement. By the time she announced that the class was over, I was shocked at how quickly it had gone by. The workout movements were split up in a way that makes you feel like barely a minute has passed before you move on to the next.

What I Thought About the Class

MET made me realize that it's not about how long you work out but the movements that you're doing and how to get the most out of those key movements. I'm no longer going to torture myself with workouts that I hate. Instead, I've learned that strength training can be fun, especially when you have an amazing trainer like Hughes.

"My goal is for people to have learned how to feel stronger in their bodies," Hughes says, "building confidence in how they approach a workout, the weight room, or other movement practices. Specifically, I want people to have increased proprioceptive awareness—learning how an exercise should feel, what it activates, and how to modify it—so they walk away feeling accomplished and looking forward to the next one."
