Though hues like aubergine, mocha brown and burgundy continually crop up around this time of year, they feel slightly premature to be wearing whilst there are still a few weeks of summer on the horizon. (Many of us are still discussing the solar eclipse or have a few mini breaks planned to far-flung coasts across the Mediterranean; we’re not in the throes of cold weather dressing yet by any means!)

The resolution? Opt for this precise colour combination that fashion insiders have secretly been wearing for months. Indeed, the pairing of red and purple has quickly become a favourite for those with taste. Just like how a white T-shirt will always complement a pair of blue jeans, or a bag from The Row will never look out of place when styled with a cashmere V-neck jumper, certain matches will never go out of style.

Red and purple, as those in the know have proven, are one of them. Worn by everyone, from Princess Diana amid a royal tour to Hong Kong in 1989, to Zoey Deutch in a High Sport ensemble whilst out in Manhattan, this concoction is one that’s ridden with appeal and genuinely effortless to recreate.

Commanding yet considered, it offers a reprieve from more sombre colours whilst bringing a high-contrast touch to your ensemble. What’s more, it’s that purple and red don’t seem like the most apparent of choices, despite sitting next to one another on the colour wheel.

When confronted with the shades on their own, your first instinct might be to offset them, perhaps styling them with something more saccharine like pastel blue or piquant like chartreuse yellow. However, bringing together these shades offers something altogether more thoughtful.

Miu Miu is the loud one; the friend who isn't worried about going against the grain. She's not going to conform, and you can give her a uniform, but she'll still make it her own, maybe with knee-high socks, sporty sunglasses or by stealing her older sister's hobo bag. This is by no means a hindrance to Miu Miu's popularity. As of Q2 2026, it sits comfortably as the second-hottest fashion brand on the Lyst Index. (Just a smidge behind Matthieu Blazy's Chanel.)

Miu Miu also sees potential, so it's no wonder the brand has helped launch many famous names, from models (Kate Moss, Gisele Bündchen) to movie stars (Chloë Sevigny, Drew Barrymore) and even nascent It girls (Alexa Chung, Cortisa Star). More recently, Lupita Nyong’o, Hailey Bieber, Naomie Harris, Emma Chamberlain and Gigi Hadid are just a very small sampling of the stars fronting campaigns and ads and wearing Miu Miu on red carpets.

However, I should really caveat this by saying that "It girl" is far too gendered a term. Miu Miu appeals to many, regardless of how you identify, and it celebrates the unique little quirks we possess rather than squashing them in the name of polished luxury. The runways and campaigns often glitter with the faces of stars that not only have deep fan bases but are multi-hyphenates in their own right, which makes them all the more interesting. Emma Corin, Ethel Cain and Mia Goth all strutted down the autumn/winter 2023 runway; Troye Sivan modelled the spring/summer 2024 collection and Gillian Anderson just walked the moss-laden floor of Miu Miu's autumn/winter 2026 show.

Miu Miu is refined, yes, but there's a quirkiness to its aesthetics. The brand embraces the everyday—and sometimes the weird—giving it an aesthetic that isn't impeccably polished, but is somehow still covetable. It's a reminder of what fashion can be when we let restraint go and allow our more creative selves to show through.

Miu Miu also takes heaping servings of gender stereotypes and laughs at them. In most shows, you'll see the blurring of menswear and womenswear. Apron dresses are paired with brogues. Thick wool blazers are worn over silk slips. It's a constant bending of what's supposed to be "feminine" and much more in line with the nuanced reality of what "girlhood" looks like: both the sweet and the sour.

The brand shared that the most recent autumn/winter collection is "an ownership and agency of your own body, your own self and value." It's all about individualism, but how that relates to being in a world with others, too. Miu Miu isn't afraid to explore dichotomies either. Just look to the "messy girl" trend and its close relative, the "frazzled English woman". At first glance, it might feel critical, but in most cases it's really a celebration and a bolder depiction of how many of us dress every day.

Yes, we feel frazzled. Yes, we carry so much for those around us. And yes, perfection is low down on the list. And what? Miu Miu's shows feature models with unkempt hair and bags full of clothes, shoes and cords. It may come across as contradictory for a luxury house, but I prefer the term realistic. It's a holistic picture of who we are, especially as we get dressed.

I often find it suffocating to behold myself to one style. And many of us find the constant hamster wheel of self-betterment, whether through fashion or some other method, exhausting. Some days I prefer slouchy cargo trousers and boots, and other days I have the urge to wear a bold dress with splashes of primary colour. Miu Miu exudes the notion that you can come as you are, bringing every part of you. Wear the dress over the cargos; why not? Don't leave any of it behind.

While light khaki jeans and pants have been a wardrobe staple for recent seasons, I've noticed a shift in the neutral tone, and it's a bit richer and earthier. The second I saw Chloé's new winter 2026 campaign, Tom Petty's "Wildflowers" started playing in my head. The photos, captured on a cliff-top meadow by Inez Van Lamsweerde and Vinoodh Matadin, perfectly embody the song's themes of comfort, peace, and unburdening. Sure, the flowers and the sea view are literal elements of the song, which Petty wrote as an escape from a tumultuous time in his personal life, but I'm more focused on the feeling the images evoke—a vibe best explained by the designer herself.

"For this campaign, I wanted to express devotion through women, the vastness of open landscapes, and craftsmanship," Chemena Kamali, creative director of Chloé, said in a press release. "Nature brings us back to instinct, freedom, and connection. In that openness, femininity unfolds with untamed strength and togetherness." As a seasoned Nordstrom shopper and fashion editor who's spent the last several years reporting on the sale, let me just say that it's really good this time around. Last week, I popped into the NYC flagship store ahead of time to get a preview of all the deals and try things on, and in a sale-induced shopping frenzy, I ended up hauling armfuls of items back to my dressing room.

I'm not much of an impulse buyer, so even during a huge sale like this, I'd rather stock up on great wardrobe staples I know I'll get the most wear out of, which is why I want to highlight six trend-forward fall staples I'm shopping now to wear from August onward. After all, the smartest shoppers I know are always looking a season or two ahead and taking advantage of the summer sales to jump-start their fall wardrobes, which is exactly what I did. Nordstrom put so many great fall-ready items in its big sale, and I pinpointed the trends that will become the anchors to all my looks next season.

Funnel-neck outerwear is easily one of the most important fall trends to know. Designers just keep iterating on the high-neck silhouette, which tells me that it has serious longevity. Much to my delight, the Nordstrom sale is filled with plenty of cool funnel-neck options, from leather bomber jackets to windbreaker styles like the above Rails jacket. It features two toggle closures at the bottom that create a cool sporty shape, and the color just reads so rich. It would look good with lace-trim shorts and sandals while it's still warm out, but for fall, I already know it pairs well with denim, a huge plus.

I made a beeline for this specific jacket the moment I walked into the store. I'd seen it in the catalog for the sale, so I already knew I wanted to try it on and it was somehow even better in person. The stand collar and cinch-waist details give such a forward silhouette but the one feature that really sold me was the double zipper that creates even more ways to style it. I already know this is what I'll reach to wear with leggings to Pilates classes, but I also love the idea of styling it with tall boots and slim denim tucked in. The price point for a Barbour alone is already noteworthy—the function and quality are very much "if you know, you know."

Dark-wash denim was already at the very top of my "what to buy for fall 2026" shopping list, so I was thrilled to see this chic pair in the Nordstrom sale. They're the Reformation Cary High Rise Wide Leg Jeans, and coming from someone who's extremely picky about denim, these fit like a dream. They're a relaxed take on classic wide-leg jeans, and I like how they are roomy throughout the leg and have a cool trouser-like feel. The dark rinse looks even better in person and is the kind of denim wash that looks and feels so polished.

3. Suede Boots

We have to talk about suede boots because they're probably the strongest category in the entire sale. I've been wanting to invest in Staud Wally Boots for a few years now because I keep hearing my friends rave about how comfortable they are, so of course, I grabbed a pair straight away. Yes, they are as wearable as everyone says. My pick is this subtle Western silhouette with a beautiful suede finish. It was the details, like the elongated toe shape and perfect heel height, that sold me on them, though. I like the idea of showing more of the boots from underneath a skirt but would also wear them as ankle boots underneath a pair of wide jeans.

4. Cropped Pants

Love it or hate it, cropped pants are coming back into style for the latter half of 2026, and if you're at all hesitant about the shift, I'm happy to say I found the ideal pair to test-drive the silhouette with. They're the Vince Mid Rise Crop Flare Pants, and I'd even go so far as to say that they'd become the very foundation of your wardrobe. (Yes, they also come in black.) Cut from a thick stretch fabric and finished with a polished front seam, they're chic, sophisticated, and, above all, versatile. Wear them with ballet flats like I did here, kitten heels, or even flat sandals.

5. Striped Tees

While a classic white tee will never go out of style, I've been seeing striped tees dominate all year. For fall 2026, in particular, it's due to the rise of the sporty-preppy trend that we saw all over the runways. If you have yet to test the waters with one, my suggestion is to grab this Pistola tee while it's on sale to add a trend-forward touch to your fall outfits. I loved the thick, sturdy weight to it and found the combination of tan, ivory, and brown to be so easy to style with fall neutrals too. 6. Slouchy Bags

Somebody call the early 2000s—slouchy bags are so back. With the reissue of Y2K icons from designers such as Saint Laurent and Chloé, soft and slouchy totes are set to be one of the defining handbags of the year, and the fall/winter 2026 runways only confirm that. My pick is this Madewell tote in a gorgeous and expensive-looking chocolate-brown suede. It's roomy but malleable. Fashion people would push the straps down and carry it tucked under one arm as an oversize clutch.

You know those memes about the fall girl in her riding boots and cable-knit sweater clutching a pumpkin spiced latte? That's me. I love fall and I love fall fashion, including all the classics like brown, burgundy, and—of course—plaid. These cheeky checked pieces come back every fall and winter, and they're continually beloved for a reason. But that doesn't mean fashion people can't find new ways to style plaid that actually feel fresh and current—and believe me, they do.

This season, I'm taking inspiration from some very cool girls on how to look totally fab in a plaid jacket, plaid skirt, plaid dress, and (obviously) a plaid button-down. I'll walk you through it, if you'll let me.

The trick here is light-colored plaid: It's unexpected and adds dimension to the browns, dark blues, and grays in the rest of the outfit. Plus, the contrast trim is really beautiful and calls back to the bucket bag, so the whole look has consistency.

I'm so sorry to tell you that this exact skirt from Miu Miu is sold out everywhere, but I have found a similarly colorful style that also has the advantage of costing a fraction of the price. Also, the exact coat is only available in Norway, but Atorie has a very similar style for you.

I wouldn't blame you if you associated plaid shirts exclusively with Pinterest style circa 2014, but I'm also somewhat delighted to show you that a simple but good plaid shirt with jeans remains a fantastic outfit in 2025 and 2026.
