While fashion week is usually reserved for the most outlandish looks and OTT outfits, this year it has been refreshing to see many of our fashion favourites choosing to attend the shows in surprisingly understated looks. From roll-necks and blue jeans to trenchcoats and blazers, the fashion set has opted for pared-down outfits this season, which have generally been comprised of the basic wardrobe staples most of us already own. In fact, a number of the key looks are so simple, we're convinced you can recreate them using items in your existing closet. 

Do you own a few beige jumpers? Great! You can very easily steal Eva Chen's double-knit look from the JW Anderson show. Are you in the possession of blue jeans, a white tee and a beige trench coat? Who said a career in fashion was all work and no play? For up-and-comers in the industry, last night marked a colossal moment in their careers as Vogue and the Council of Fashion Designers of America (CFDA) presented the 2019 Fashion Fund Awards ceremony in Downtown Manhattan.

After an intense year of business strategizing, pitching, and designing for a panel of judges (including tastemakers such as Eva Chen, model Paloma Elsesser, former CFDA President Diane von Furstenberg, and of course, the inimitable Anna Wintour), designer Christopher John Rogers took home the highly coveted $400,000 prize, along with a year of mentorship from a CFDA member. If you aren't already familiar with Rogers's work, odds are you will be soon. Past winners include Proenza Schouler, Alexander Wang, and Pyer Moss.

As you know, Eva Chen is one of the fashion industry's most beloved insiders, and you're in for a treat with this week's rebroadcasted Second Life episode. Last November, Chen sat down with our co-founder and Second Life podcast host, Hillary Kerr, to talk all things pertaining to building a career in the fashion industry, working at Instagram, and adding author to her résumé. 

Chen is now the head of fashion partnerships at Instagram (how's that for a cool job?), but she kicked off her career as a fashion closet intern at Harper's Bazaar while in college at Johns Hopkins (initially for pre-med), later becoming an editor at Elle magazine (along with Kerr), the beauty director at Teen Vogue, and the editor in chief at Lucky. In 2015, she made the jump to Instagram, where she works closely with fashion designers, models, publications, stylists, and influencers. If you're one of her devoted 1.2 million followers, you know that she's also one of the most refreshingly real, honest people to follow on the platform. She also released her first children's book in late 2018, Juno Valentine and the Magical Shoes, which became a New York Times best seller. She also has a sequel, Juno Valentine and the Fantastic Fashion Adventure, coming out on October 29.

"If there's someone you admire, or someone whose work that you admire, learn everything you can about them. Then try to meet with them or someone like them and ask about what they actually do—the nuts and bolts."

"Do the things no else one wants to do. Make yourself useful. Don't wait to be asked to do something; just do it."

"When I look at a résumé, I don't really look at where someone went to college. That doesn't really matter to me. I feel I'm looking for someone that clearly took initiative and seems on top of it."

"The first thing you have to do is research. It's really easy to romanticize a different industry, but you have to understand the mechanics of it. Within the category of fashion, there are 1000 jobs. Narrow it down."

It's no secret that we've been longtime admirers of Eva Chen's style. (Please see exhibits A and B.) Given that the former editor in chief of the Condé Nast magazine Lucky and the current head of fashion partnerships at Instagram has garnered an audience of over one million followers on the aforementioned social media platform, it's safe to say we're not the only ones who are currently coveting her enviable style.

If you're also one of Chen's devoted followers, then you're no doubt familiar with the viral #EvaChenPose hashtag and the many, many shoes that she's snapped herself wearing while riding in the back seat of taxis throughout NYC. Thanks to a recent Instagram Story posted by Chen in which she solicited questions from her followers, we now have an edited list of the modern style icon's favorite shoe styles.

One curious follower posed the question, "If you could only wear one pair of shoes for the rest of your life, which would they be?" Chen replied: Birkenstock sandals, Chanel ballet flats, Manolo Blahnik sling-back sandals, Gianvito Rossi pumps, and, last but not least, Nike Cortez sneakers.

Next up, Eva Chen wants you to stop overthinking your Instagram feed.

Followers of Eva Chen will know that she is posting outfit selfies taken in the stairwell of Facebook's New York office as frequently as her signature #EvaChenPose snapped in the back of a taxi. One of her resolutions for 2019 was to wear things other than mom jeans, and four outfits in, we're already loving her approach to workwear this year. She is sticking to classic office-appropriate items, rotating cashmere jumpers, trousers and shirts that are all in a neutral colour palette. Eva stops these looks from feeling too corporate, however, by adding slight twists: When you look closely, you'll notice her smart black trousers are actually made with croc-effect leather.

Eva initially gained her huge following on Instagram for posting pictures of her shoes and handbags every day, and so it'll be no surprise that the accessories are the focus of these workwear looks. Eva Chen just made her bevy of Instagram followers (1 million, to be exact) very happy. Chen has been traveling around the world promoting her book, Juno Valentine and the Magical Shoes, routinely documenting her looks along the way (and in her IG mirror selfies when she's not book-touring). Many of Chen's looks include jeans, and her followers have noticed. This week, Chen candidly posted in her Instagram story that she'd been walking around with the tag still on her jeans all day, adding that they were the "holy" jeans that she'd been getting frequent DMs about. Those jeans are the Paige Noella Relaxed Straight Leg style. We took a look through Chen's Instagram posts, and she does, in fact, tag Paige quite a lot, so we can only assure that they're the Noella jeans. And given her aforementioned vast fan base, we predict sales for the jeans will quickly rise.

The beauty of these particular jeans is that they appear to be as comfortable as they are cool. The relaxed leg is cropped, so they look anything but sloppy, and the mid-rise is perfect for when you need a break from high-rise styles. Chen seems to favor the cool distressed styles, but there are plenty of washes to chose from if that's not your speed. As another year draws to a close, we've started to look back on the biggest trends of 2018 and the street style looks that launched them. But we thought it also might be fun to go back even further and remind ourselves of who the OG street style stars are, and what they've done since they were photographed at their first fashion week shows.

From designers, tech innovators and brand consultants, these women have come a long way and have accomplished amazing things, so as 2018 draws to a close, take a walk down memory lane with us as we look at where the original street style stars are now. 

Rumi Neely 

Rumi Neely is one of our favourite original fashion bloggers. After launching Fashion Toast in 2008, she gained a large following for her simple style and regular blogging. She then became a fashion week regular and 10 years later, Neely now has her own label, Are You Am I and continues to publish work on her website. 

Caroline Issa 

Originally, Caroline Issa worked as an editor and consultant before becoming a stakeholder and later, fashion editor of TANK magazine. After stepping into the fashion world, Issa was photographed by every emerging street style blogger in 2012. Fast forward to 2018, and Issa still works at TANK magazine, but also has her own fashion line at Nordstrom, has modelled for and collaborated with J.Crew, and created an app that allows users to unlock digital content by scanning physical magazine pages. 

Eva Chen 

Eva Chen has been in the fashion industry for a long time. After working at Lucky magazine, Elle magazine and Teen Vogue, she became Instagram's very first Head of Fashion Partnerships in 2015. She's been at fashion week's around the world for over a decade and no one can deny the impact she's had on how the fashion industry operates today. 

Giovanna Battaglia

Giovanna Battaglia got her start styling with Anna Dello Russo at L'Umo Vogue in Italy before moving to New York City in 2011. After scoring a job at W magazine, Battaglia caught the eye of Scott Schuman's The Satorialist. She was one of the first faces to appear on the website. Today, the fashion powerhouse is still constantly appearing in street style galleries (with her old boss Dello Russo close by) and released her first book, Gio-Graphy: Serious Fun in the Wild World of Fashion in 2017. 

Chiara Ferragni

Chiara Ferragni launched her fashion blog, The Blonde Salad, in 2009 and she instantly gained recognition for her maximalist looks. Soon, she was all over the fashion week circut and was featured on The Satorialist and other street style blogs as they began to grow in the late 2010's. In 2016, The Blonde Salad was transformed into an eCommerce website with its own line of clothing and accessories and a year later, Ferragni was named the most powerful influencer in the world by Forbes. 

Nicole Warne 

Australian Nicole Warne launched her website and vintage e-shop Gary Pepper Vintage in 2009 and after tackling two magazine internships, decided to work on her vintage store full-time. Little did she know that it would be the best business decision she'd ever make. The websites' popularity skyrocketed and after re-branding to Gary Pepper Girl, in 2015 Warne became the first Australian blogger to land a cover of a major fashion magazine. Since then, the influencer has collaborated with Dior, Louis Vuitton, Chanel, Cartier and Net-A-Porter on digital strategy, creative direction, brand consultation and social media campaigns whilst also runnning QANTAS' Q Collective digital influencer campaign.

If you're one of Eva Chen's one million Instagram followers, you're well acquainted with the #EvaChenPose and the many enviable shoes she shows off in the back of taxi cabs across NYC. It's no surprise, then, that her first book is all about shoes.

This week, she officially released Juno Valentine and the Magical Shoes, an illustrated children's book. If you keep your eyes peeled, you'll notice that Chen includes tons of designer shoes throughout the book, from Louis Vuitton's buzzy sneakers to Chanel's classic slingbacks. So, we figured why not make her adorable children's book shoppable for fashion grown-ups?

As for the story itself, Chen proves that the accessory can actually provide an important teachable moment for young kids. "Juno embarks on an epic journey through time and space, stepping into the shoes of female icons from Frida Kahlo and Cleopatra to Lady Gaga and Serena Williams," the book description reads. "Each pair of shoes Juno tries brings a brand-new adventure―and a step towards understanding that her very own shoes might be the best shoes of all." How cute is that?

Explaining who Eva Chen is to someone who doesn't follow her is tough. In a previous life she was a magazine editor—editor-in-chief of Condé Nast title Lucky, and beauty and health director at Teen Vogue. But now she's known for her current role as Instagram's Head of Fashion Partnerships, and for her personal Instagram account. Chen is an influencer, a career woman and somewhat of a celebrity, all rolled up into one.

The most enchanting thing about Chen's Instagram, and the reason we think she's amassed almost a million followers, is that she doesn't only showcase the shiny aspects of life. She uses Instagram without filters—no photo-editing, no perfect poses, no tightly-kept aesthetic. Right alongside her seemingly limitless shoe collection (documented with the hashtag #EvaChenPose) and celebrity selfies, Chen captures her toddlers at home, days at the office, and trips to the grocery store. She mixes the everyday in with the extraordinary to depict an accurate montage of her life. Yes, Chen's sunny outlook makes it look fun, but it's not curated in the way we've come to expect from Instagram influencers. 

In an interview with our sister site MyDomaine, Chen spoke candidly about her unconventional career path and walked us through her typical work day. Here, Chen speaks more directly to her tips for using Instagram, the brands she thinks you should be following, and reveals the best way to take a selfie (celebrity friends optional). Read on, as Chen discusses why we need to drop the filters and start reflecting real life on Instagram.

How do you like to use Instagram?

Frequently. A lot. I've posted three times today already. I posted a video. I posted a photo, and I posted a carousel slideshow. I posted probably 20 stories. I've done two Instagram Lives. I post a lot to Instagram. I tend not to overthink it. I know that some people, they agonise over everything. I work at Instagram so I can authoritatively say that's not how to use Instagram. Instagram is meant to be instant. You should be showing your full self and not overthinking it. Because really, that takes the fun out of it.

I know you inspire people to use Instagram in a more relaxed way—we all are so conscious of how we use it, but we need to relax!

It's not editorial. That's the thing. Instagram is not supposed to be editorial. Instagram is supposed to be more reflective of real life. A lot of it is a mental hurdle. I've had this conversation with a few designers—mostly younger designers—who once they make that switch in their mind from everything has to be perfect and editorial and look like Vogue, they realise that wait, Vogue exits. Vogue is Vogue. Instagram is for me. It's for fun. It's for posting my matcha latte or posting the vacation I'm on. I've had a lot of people reach out to me to be like I feel so much lighter now. I feel like once you take that step, you're not going to look back.

Do you think the world of the flatlay is over?

I follow hashtag #bookstagram which is all basically flatlays of books. I still love it. But I feel like just a flatlay is not enough these days.

It needs to say something.

It needs to say something. If you do a flatlay, share the recipe of the smoothie that's in your flatlay. If you're posting a flatlay of an outfit, don't just say "shirt by by Carver, shorts by Scanlan Theodore, shoes by..." I'm trying to think of an Aussie shoe designer now. Senso. I love Senso. I'm super into Senso. I feel like it's not that it's not enough to do it, but it's kind of like, okay great, but tell me more about the inspiration for your outfit. Tell me where you found those Senso shoes. How you searched like four different stockists for it. Tell a story. I don't think flatlays are dead per se. It's just you need a little bit more substance.

What are some of, in your view, the most exciting fashion brands on Instagram at the moment?

I feel like Gucci is one that everyone says and I feel kind of sad and boring to say it, but it is true. I love what they do with illustrators. I love what they do with emerging talent; how they find people off the beaten path of fashion and introduce them to the fashion world and vice versa. I met a glasses designer here in Sydney called Shevoke.

Oh yeah?

I feel like their Instagram is pretty fun. The way they use Instagram, they use a lot of polls. They repost people wearing the glasses. He gave me a pair of the little Bella Hadid-esque sunglasses yesterday. I'm still not sure about that trend.

Did you see what Mindy Kaling said about that trend? So funny.

It's so true because I keep acquiring little glasses. Then every time I look at myself with little glasses, I'm like, um... But it's like I want to wear it so badly because Bella Hadid wears it and she looks so cool.

She looks amazing, doesn't she?

I think I've come to the conclusion today that only Bella Hadid and Keanu Reeves from The Matrix look good in those glasses. But anyway, I think they're doing a cool job because they're using stories really well. I now follow P.E Nation and it's definitely fitspo. It's definitely... I don't look like that when I work out, but it's cool. I guess it's meant not to be working out clothes though. It's more like athleisure.

It's a lifestyle.

Yeah, but I think their Instagram is very energetic. I think the brand Glossier, no one beats them in terms of customer engagement. And in terms of creating a lifestyle around themselves.

It has built a community.

Yeah, the Glossier girls, they have achieved the holy grail of engagement. Basically, they don't even have to answer the questions really anymore. Their other followers will respond which is amazing. That's very rare, so they've really achieved the holy grail.

Aside from the #EvaChenPose, what are some of your favourite poses for an Instagram selfie?

I feel like I just openly acknowledge the 'awkward' so I just kind of grin like a maniac and I usually have a double chin situation. I think whoever has the longest arms should be taking the selfie.

That's a very good tip.

It's almost always me with the longest arms. But if I'm with a model like Kendall Jenner whose limbs are extremely long, I will ask her to take the selfie.

Who took that Met Gala selfie?

At first, Kim Kardashian offered to take it and I was like no, you gotta be in the picture. It was a waiter. He was this waiter who literally had to take it like 500 times. That picture is taken from so many different angles. Then Cole Sprouse had a camera at that event. He took a lot of pictures. He's really talented.

What would be your advice to emerging designers and fashion brands? How could they use Instagram to help build their brand?

My advice would be to talk to my coworker Emily. No, I'm kidding. My advice would be to think globally. Years ago, I first heard about Dion Lee because of Instagram. I'm wearing Zimmerman today, but I learned so much more about Zimmerman through Instagram. Now, years later, Instagram is the global marketplace. I've learned about brands from Florence to Tokyo to here, Australia, to Los Angeles. You guys don't sell Glossier here but you all know about it.

Yeah, and we all find a way to shop it somehow!

You know? That's the amazing thing about Instagram is that it has made the fashion world a much smaller place. It's made it possible for emerging designers and small businesses to become businesses, like viable businesses. The way to do it really, is you talk to people. That human connection. It's like Instagram is the customer service counter. Reach out to people that you admire, whose style you like. This is a bad example because it's not really fashion. But a cake company reached out to me over direct message. They were like hey, we wanted to send the Facebook offices a cake. Are you interested? I'm like yes, yes, we are. Thank you.

Yes, please give us all the cake. It's called a smash cake.

They're perfect for Instagram moments.

I'm super excited. So it's like that kind of thing. Take a risk. Reach out to people. I've done that too myself, not from a business standpoint. But literally just reached out to people I admire, most notably being someone from The Bachelorette who was my favorite Bachelorette contestant ever in the US. I was like obsessed with her. This is embarrassing now.

It's the age-old question: How do you get more followers on Instagram? Well, two of the platform's most successful users, Eva Chen and Aimee Song, just chatted about that very topic, so you'd better believe we took notes. On her YouTube channel, Song interviewed Chen, the director of fashion partnerships at Instagram, and we came away with the below tidbits from their chat.

1. Be original and be yourself. "There is room at the table for everyone. … Talent is not a finite thing," Chen says in the video. "The most important thing for new bloggers, writers, or anyone in the creative class is to have an original point of view. It's not enough to take pretty pictures anymore. Maybe you take pretty pictures, but it's from a really unique point of view, like you only do backstage, or you're a really amazing writer. … Everyone asks me, 'What's the secret, Eva? You work at Instagram.' I say, 'Just be yourself.' It's the most basic advice."

2. Show behind-the-scenes glimpses. Chen suggests posting a photo and then showing a behind-the-scenes look at the making of the image on your Instagram Stories.

3. Add a sense of humor. Chen explains that funny captions can be successful. Her example caption: "This might look like the perfect photo, but it took 4 hours and 23 minutes, and being a blogger is hard."

4. Use hashtags. "Fashion people sometimes don't like hashtags," Chen says. "Hashtags are a great way to tap into a community. I have a friend who is a food blogger. She had 3000 followers and is now at 120,00 followers by using hashtags. Find your community and be part of it."

5. Tap into the community. "Be part of the community on Instagram," Chen says. "Mention people, tag people, like other people's posts. It drives me crazy: People tell me it's not cool to like other people's posts. … Don't be afraid to talk to other people, reach out to people, and collaborate. Gucci has raised the profile of so many illustrators and artists from Instagram."

6. Avoid clichés. Chen talked about the prevalence of images like avocado toast and lattes. "What does that say? Everyone has seen that picture," she says.

While the Glamour Women of the Year Awards were the big red carpet event that was hard to miss on social media last night—attendees included Gigi and Bella Hadid, Solange Knowles, Nicole Kidman, and more star power than could fit in Brooklyn’s Kings Theatre—the all-day summit that preceded was just as magical and inspiring.

It’s hard to narrow down all the best gems of wisdom we learned from speakers like Chelsea Clinton, Laverne Cox, Naomi Campbell, Cecile Richards, and former Vice President Joe Biden, along with Dr. Jill Biden, but one succinct piece of career advice stood out. It was from Instagram’s Eva Chen, who spoke to the challenges of succeeding at work as a woman in 2017.

“The structure of companies is not always set up to help women,” she said, speaking to the fashion industry as well as all others. “Whether it’s at a junior level or when they take time off to become a mother or when they take time off to do whatever they want to do. But I think right now we’re at a sea change. We’re at a phase where it’s standard for us to talk about this openly.”

Besides having open and honest conversation, Chen says that what will benefit women (but really, everyone) in the long run is paying it forward as much as you can. “You have a responsibility to help two,” Chen said, referring to the number of people she encourages you to help for every person who’s ever given you a leg up in your own career. “I think everyone in this room, if you’ve ever had someone help you —whether it’s a woman, a man, a professor, an aunt, anyone—you should spread that energy outward to help other girls, women, boys, whoever. I think multiplying that positive energy is very important.”

While she then joked about her “new-age” statement, the advice is no less powerful and a wonderful rule of thumb for anyone entering their careers or who are already established. It sets an example that you can never be too green or too advanced to help others succeed. And it creates environments where everyone, women included, can thrive beginning right now and well into the future.

An hour or so ago, the Marc Jacobs show wrapped, officially bringing New York Fashion Week to a close. Going shopping is usually a bittersweet experience. You typically end up overspending, which is unfortunate, but that overspending goes toward items that you without a doubt needed. Or did you? This morning, Eva Chen gave us a quick reality check by way of a very informative Instagram post wherein she reveals the one thing she will never do while shopping. Shopping addicts of the world, listen up!

While browsing at Neiman Marcus, Chen discovered a pair of Chanel flats that were non-negotiable, but while she was at it, she told us what would be negotiable on any other shopping excursion. “One of my shopping rules is to NEVER try on anything I wouldn’t/shouldn’t buy (whether because it’s too [expensive] or no occasion to wear it, etc).” The concept is simple enough, but how many times have you told yourself that you’re “just going to try it on” only to find yourself unable to take said item off in the end? Take it from Chen and don’t even tempt yourself. You are stronger than you think (but we won’t judge you for those impromptu splurges, either).

That means you’ve created something that people are talking about and that’s what makes a good post.”

Just a few weeks after Lucky Editor in Chief Eva Chen announced she would be leaving the magazine, The Lucky Group confirmed that it would be reducing the print magazine from 10 issues per year to four, according to Fashionista and Adweek. The Lucky Group CEO Josh Berman told Adweek that the May issue will be Lucky's last in its current format, and the first new edition, a September issue landing at the end of summer, will have a more "premium 'collectible' feeling."

WWD reports that Lucky editor in chief Eva Chen is said to be leaving the magazine as early as this Thursday.
