Coming up: This Controversial Silhouette Is Preparing for a Surprisingly Chic Return

The premise of this article is simple. On a weekly basis, I stumble across lesser-known brands that are doing seriously cool stuff within the industry. My discovery of said brands generally results in me waxing lyrical to my long-suffering colleagues on Slack (where else?), so I thought it was about time that I shared some of these gems with you, our lovely readers. 

This week is a somewhat eclectic mix: two affordable sustainable fashion brands and one incredible size-diverse collab. Damson Madder and Seventy + Mochi make up the former and are brands that offer the rare combination of eco-credentials, design savvy and affordability. I have pieces from both brands and can confirm they look just as good in real life as they do online. I also had to include Erdem's collaboration with Universal Standard, a stunning collection that runs from size 00 to size 40 and comprises plenty of winning spring-ready staples, such as denim shackets and floral minidresses. More of this please, fashion designers.

1. Damson Madder

I discovered sustainable fashion brand Damson Madder via ASOS last year and was impressed by its design kudos and affordability (something that is sadly lacking in the sustainable clothing market). The brand has just dropped its S/S 21 collection, and I think it's the best to date. Featuring smart fabrics such as Tencel, organic cotton and recycled towelling, Damson Madder offers transparency and eco-credentials without scrimping on style. I have my eye on the checked green shorts co-ord and the ruffle-neckline gingham dress. Feel-good summer vibes epitomised.

2. Seventy + Mochi

I've featured conscious denim brand Seventy + Mochi in a few shopping galleries since its inception in 2020, but I had to give the label a proper call-out this week, as I spot another lust-worthy item that is begging to be "added to basket" every time I check the site.

This week, it was the brand's patchwork denim dungarees made from deadstock organic cotton that set my heart racing. I have the originals (see above) and can confirm they're super flattering and comfy. I also can't stop thinking about the Pablo denim jacket with a cute ruffled collar and balloon sleeves. FYI: These collections are made in limited quantities to avoid waste, so if you see something you love, don't delay.

3. Erdem x Universal Standard

The concept of a size-inclusive fashion line shouldn't be particularly noteworthy, but unfortunately, with the industry's current track record, it is certainly something to celebrate. This season, British fashion brand Erdem has joined forces with size-diverse US label Universal Standard for an exclusive collaboration, the designs of which are available from size 00 up to size 40. 

"There's a beautiful universality in denim, and with careful design, you can achieve a wonderful permanence," says designer Erdem Moralıoğlu MBE. "Fashion for everyone means designing consciously beyond the boundaries of shape or trend."

With jumpsuits coming in at £182 and blouses at £131, these pieces might be higher than your average high-street buy, but getting a slice of the Erdem action for under £200 is not something to be sniffed at. Scroll down to see and shop our highlights.

We had very few red carpet fashion moments to indulge in last year, but they will no doubt resume at some point in 2021—and we'll be there to cover them. Red carpet events are always a huge team effort, as they require hardworking stylists, tailors, makeup artists, and more, and the final product is always a glorious look for the fashion history books.

Looking ahead to the return of red carpet events—whenever that may be—I mined runway images to come up with some predictions about what celebrities will wear. For instance, I thought the sultry Versace S/S 21 collection was rife with dresses that Blake Lively would love, and Molly Goddard's show had Gemma Chan's name written all over it. Scroll down to see my predictions for award season 2021. 

This inventive Halpern S/S 21 dress might be too forward-thinking for the Oscars, but here's hoping it pops up on the Met Gala red carpet. Katy Perry, are you listening? 

This intricate gown from the Chanel Métiers d'Art 2021 show is giving me Natalie Portman vibes. 

Christopher John Rogers is a master of both color and shapes, and this S/S 21 dress proves it. I can picture Zendaya in this cheery number. 

British designer Molly Goddard is known for her poufy dresses, but this one from S/S 21 just might be my favorite. Fashion chameleon Gemma Chan would pull this off with aplomb. 

We all know Tracee Ellis Ross loves metallic dresses, so I think she'd fancy this Alexandre Vauthier Haute Couture S/S 21 look. 

I'll be very disappointed if Blake Lively doesn't don this Versace S/S 21 dress at some point next year. 

Sarah Paulson loves a statement red carpet moment, so I'm envisioning her in this Givenchy F/W 20 caped look. 

This bold Roksanda S/S 21 dress would suit Lizzo's penchant for extraordinary red carpet outfits. 

If I had to predict who would choose this Schiaparelli S/S 21 minidress, I'd go with supermodel Gisele Bündchen. 

The jewel of Copenhagen, Cecilie Bahnsen, is known for her confectionary designs. I can picture Olivia Palermo looking radiant in this S/S 21 number. 

Kate Bosworth came to my mind immediately after seeing this frothy pink Giambattista Valli F/W 20 dress. 

Emilia Wickstead took the statement-collar trend to the next level for S/S 21 and it's giving me Katie Holmes vibes. 

This LaQuan Smith S/S 21 dress is giving me major Jennifer Lopez vibes. 

Versace S/S 21

Elle Fanning gravitates towards princess gowns and this stunning one from Erdem S/S 21 is more than worthy of her consideration. 

This Paco Rabanne S/S 22 suit of armor is destined to be worn by Solange Knowles on the no-rules red carpet of the Met Gala.

Actress Caitriona Balfe’s path to stardom hasn’t exactly been what you’d call traditional. While packing bags for a local charity in her native Ireland, she was scouted by a modeling agent and then made her way to Paris at 19, where she began a modeling career that touched all the major fashion houses. Balfe continued to work in New York City for nearly eight years, but after deciding that modeling wasn’t her true passion, she eventually landed in L.A. to pursue her lifelong dream of acting on-screen.

Fast-forward to 2013 when Starz was casting the coveted role of Claire Fraser for the highly anticipated adaptation of the Outlander series and Balfe was called in after a second look at her audition tape. Thanks to her chemistry test with co-star Sam Heughan, she won the role right before shooting began, which required her to uproot her life in L.A. and move to Scotland. (Well, we did say it wasn’t the most traditional path.)

This November, she’ll be starring alongside Christian Bale and Matt Damon in the upcoming movie, Ford v Ferrari, where she plays Bale’s wife, Mollie, who is an accomplished race car driver in her own right. It’s safe to say her career is about to shift into fifth gear.

There's no question that Princess Diana was ahead of her time when it came to fashion. She mastered the athleisure trend that's everywhere right now and loved classic looks that royals like Meghan Markle are still wearing. That said, we were still slightly surprised to see one Lady Di trend make a resurgence: veiled hats.

Exaggerated versions of Princess Diana's go-to veiled hats have been all over the London Fashion Week S/S 19 runways in the past few days, most prominently at Erdem and Simone Rocha. The former showed versions that tied under the neck while the latter created romantic, flowy veils with lace trims that floated above pretty dresses. If you want to get in on the royal-approved trend, both Gucci and Eugenia Kim have worthy iterations while vintage lovers will be obsessed with Chanel's interpretation from the '50s.

What do you get when you mix a dash of '40s style, a pinch of English ballet inspiration, and a dose of Parisian flair? Erdem's new capsule collection available exclusively on 24 Sèvres, of course. Celebrity-favorite designer Erdem Moralioglu has teamed up with the retailer on a capsule of nine new pieces available today. At the top of our list? The beautiful kitten heels we can't stop staring at. 

According to a statement from 24 Sèvres, the inspiration behind the capsule collection takes a cute from Moralioglu's "lifelong love of the arts and the ballet, as well as his joyful and spirited Spring/Summer 2018 collection (which imagined young Queen Elisabeth II embarking on a secret, lifelong love affair with jazz)." His inspiration for this collection was Margot Fonteyn, the English Prima Ballerina Assoluta appointed by the queen in 1979.

Moralioglu expounded on his vision for the collection and described how they're the perfect thing to pack for your next trip to Paris. "The spirit of the Spring/Summer 2018 2018 capsule collection combined with the movement of my work with the Royal Ballet creates a modern and playful collection," he said in a press release. "The movement in the pieces brings a really relaxed elegance which, to me, works perfectly for Parisian summer nights." Scroll down to shop our favorite pieces.

There’s no denying that the Kate Middleton effect is a thing. And though not yet a part of the royal family, we’ve already seen the Meghan effect working its magic. Wide leg trousers, slouchy boots, and amazing coats are just a few of the pieces Markle has inspired us to invest in this season. However, her style influence isn’t just confined to the pieces she’s already worn.

In fact, it seems that a mere rumour of Markle donning an item is enough to increase sales—which is crazy, to say the least. Case in point: The designers Markle is rumoured to be considering for her wedding dress have already experienced a spike in search traffic.

According to the fashion search engine Lyst, brands including Erdem, Ralph & Russo, Misha Nonoo, and Roland Mouret have all seen a 38-82% increase in searches since being speculated as Markle’s potential options.

Needless to say, whichever brand she does end up settling on is sure to be immediately sought-after. If rumours alone are apparently enough to create buzz for these brands, imagine what it’ll be like once she’s actually made a decision. Regardless of which designer she goes with, we’re sure it’ll be a gown to remember. All we can do for now is wait… and keep daydreaming about the possibilities.

It's pretty rare for me to say that if I could, I'd wear every single look sent down the runway of a particular collection, but that was definitely the case after I saw Erdem's F/W 18 show, which just presented at London Fashion Week. From the long, floral brocade coat and swiss-dot tights that opened the show to the gorgeous cape and matchingmidi skirt that closed it, there wasn't one piece I wasn't dying to wear. Oftentimes, runway collections are more about art than wearability, but Erdem founder and designer Erdem Moralioğlu knows how women want to dress and that sophistication will always be in style.

While my thoughts about the breathtaking collection are vast, I narrowed them down to four takeaways. See below.

1. The Absolute Best Strapless Dress I've Ever Encountered

I'm not a huge fan of strapless dresses, but the neckline, body-skimming silhouette, and moody floral print make for a dress I wouldn't think twice about wearing if given the chance.

2. Sequins Can Be Sophisticated

Sequins were all over the spring 2018 runways as well, but I don't recall another collection in which they were quite this classic and wearable. Given that Vaudeville star Adele Astaire inspired the collection, Erdem's take on the sparkly trend was present with many of the looks.

3. Swiss Dots Will Be Everywhere This Fall

Could swiss dots be the new fishnets? According to Erdem, the answer is a resounding yes, and I'm perfectly fine with that. I'm very much drawn to the sweet feel that the subtle detail lends to sheer pieces.

4. This Is the New Way to Wear a Dress

The combination of the dress and effortlessly belted cardigan is an easy-to-re-create look that's flattering, beautiful, and versatile. I'll be on the lookout for fashion girls to wear it on repeat this fall (including myself).

Though we do love a good, healthy dose of athleisure, sometimes it feels good to put on something a little more formal, and what better way to make you feel a little fancy than a good ruffle sweater? Despite its frequent pairing with lace, the flouncy detail can definitely be cooler than you might expect.

As a nod to the romantic era, ruffles are one of the most whimsical types of embellishments out there, and they’re bound to make you feel dressed up no matter what you wear. Whether it’s paired with a set of distressed boyfriend jeans or a classic midi skirt, a cool ruffled sweater will instantly give you a flirtatious vibe.

Wear yours loud and proud with a great statement ruffle, or if that’s not typically your style, ease into the trend with small frills along the neckline or sleeves. No matter which way you go, you surely aren’t going to go wrong.

Sure, a little black dress might be a staple for date nights, but why not change it up the next time you grab a drink with your new Bumble match? Instead of one-piece, throw a cool top into the mix. WHO WHAT WEAR AUSTRALIA: What can you tell us about Erdem x H&M?

ERDEM MORALIOGLU: Erdem x H&M is full of totally new pieces that look back at the different themes since I started my label in 2005. I also looked at my own personal memories, my childhood, and my family, and things that inspire me in pop culture. I think it’s interesting that by having both men’s and women’s it serves as an invitation to take pieces from each wardrobe to make it your own, irrespective of whether it’s menswear or womenswear.

WWW: You’re renowned for the captivating stories behind your collections—what’s the narrative for Erdem x H&M?

EM: It was really fun to design this collection because I approached it in a different way. When I’m designing my catwalk collections, I construct a whole narrative about the woman, who she is, what is she doing, what does she think? For Erdem x H&M it was much more open. I wanted the collection to have that sense of playfulness and also freedom. I also really enjoyed designing the pieces as individual garments. 

WWW: Can you tell us about the childhood memories that inspired the collection?

EM: Erdem x H&M is the first time I’ve ever designed menswear, and it got me thinking about what I wear now, but also what I wore when I was growing up. Like an old Norwegian sweater that I wore in high school, which led to the graphic take on the Fair Isle in Erdem x H&M. This then led me to start thinking about what my twin sister Sara wore when we were growing up, and how she would wear a fleece over vintage tea dresses. It’s something I’ve always thought was so cool. 

WWW: How was it to design your first ever menswear collection?

EM: It was an absolute joy. I found it a totally different process to designing womenswear, which is so deeply based on narrative. For men’s, it was really thinking about what I would wear, and what I’ve worn at different stages of my life. Designing the men’s collection was almost forensic. With every piece, I thought about how I wanted it to be: what does an Erdem coat look like? What is its length? How does it fit? How should it feel? It was like taking a wardrobe apart and putting it back together again with the pieces that matter most. It’s very personal, and very satisfying.

WWW: Did designing menswear affect the resulting womenswear?

EM: As I was designing the men’s collection, I was also thinking about how it would look if it was worn by a woman. Designing the menswear gave a new dimension to the womenswear, because I was thinking about how these women’s pieces would be if they were mixed with the male wardrobe. I also think it works the other way too. Guys could look great in the women’s white shirt with the ruffle that extends down from the collar, so I added that for the men’s collection as well.

WWW: Lets talk about your favourite pieces: What would be your top pick from the women’s collection?

EM: That’s a difficult question! I love the dresses, especially the jacquard gown, which has such amazing volume, or the sun plissé dress that was in my first collection. And the windowpane check coat is also great with its oversized masculine shape, while the faux leopard coat is really chic, with a grosgrain ribbon that can be either tied at the neck or worn as a belt. I wanted it to be a totally versatile collection, and there are so many different lace and floral tops that can be worn day or night, and the mohair sweaters are so great, as well as it’s the first time I’ve ever done a hoodie.

WWW: What about the men’s collection?

EM: I can’t wait to wear the tailoring myself, especially the grey herringbone blazer, and its matching pants. I’m really proud of the Harris Tweed coat, which has such a feeling of authenticity, and I love the functional feel of the fleece zip-ups. We also worked really hard on the cut of the parka, which is inspired by the utilitarian parkas I remember from my Canadian childhood. This one has a really clean and neat cut, with chunky white gold Erdem zippers. I’m also really excited by the way florals work in the men’s collection.

WWW: One final question: What is it like working with Baz Luhrmann?

EM: I’m so honoured and excited to be working with Baz Luhrmann. He’s one of the greatest storytellers of our time, and I know we share so much in common with our love of narrative, and how clothing can say so much about character. What we’re doing is all a big secret right now, with more to be revealed as we get closer to launch.

"It was such a thrill to see the collection come to life in Los Angeles," Erdem Moralioglu said in a statement. "It was amazing to collaborate with H&M on these pieces, which I'm so excited to share with the world."

The collection doesn't launch until November 2, but last night's lucky celebrities were able to get their hands on the pieces in advance. Dunst, for instance, wore a cute pajama set, while Bosworth chose my personal favorite dress from the collection. Better mark your calendars: The beautiful items are bound to sell out quickly.

We can place safe bets that 99% of the editors attending fashion month have recently gone shopping with the purpose of crafting their new-season looks. But there's a glitch in such a preparatory system: When you see the next round of shows (right now, designers are offering up S/S 17 wares), the urge to buy, buy, buy strikes again. And no more so than when you experience back-to-back runways with Roksanda and Erdem. Roksanda's vibrant mix of berry, purple and nude tones had the crowd enthralled and ready to shed their winter darks. The feather plume-dotted gowns were instant red carpet smashes, sculptural bags would satisfy art collectors as much as they would fashion lovers and we fell hard for the layered ankle-grazing dresses that made looking elegant seem far easier than we ever imagined. 

Erdem's attention was focused on the past; had his Victorian ladies been shipwrecked? Their stunning couture-like dresses looked ever so slightly roughed up and all the cooler for it. The craftsmanship was, as always, beyond impeccable, and we were envious of his bevy of front-row A-listers (Dianna Agron, Poppy Delevingne, Eva Herzigová, Daisy Lowe, Doina Ciobanu, et al) who will undoubtedly be first to float around in these divine creations.

Between these two standout shows, three major trends (ones we've seen developing all week) were confirmed:

Flatforms are big (and getting bigger). We've seen the chunky-soled sandals across the runways of New York, but if even Erdem's ultra-ladylike models are wearing them, a fresh fan club may well be emerging.

Frills. Embroidery. Layers. Pleating. Lace. Ribbons. Pull-cords…

Tassels. Peekaboo. Intricately woven fabrics.

You have to have big earrings. And they should probably be gold. Wear one. Wear a pair. Wear them with everything.
