If you've been following the flat-shoe revival of the past few years, you'll know that ballet flats burst onto the scene a few years back, edging out heels in the process. As the trend evolved, studded, suede and satin iterations joined the mix, then, eventually, woven and perforated styles gained momentum too as brands continued to reimagine the classic silhouette.

Now, for summer 2026, Emma Watson has introduced me to a chic shoe trend breaking through next. Following the woven ballet-flat movement that's dominated recent seasons, Watson stepped out in Venice wearing a pair of huarache flats. Hailing from Mexico, the traditional shoes feature a woven, closed-toe design that falls inbetween a fisherman sandal and a leather loafer. Offering all the polish of a classic loafer with a breezier, more relaxed feel, the style feels perfectly suited to the warmer months ahead.

For a stroll through Venice's streets, Watson paired the traditional shoes with a Pink City Prints Pyjama Set (£145). From there, she stacked on a beaded necklace and finished with a charming pair of cherry earrings.

Where a traditional leather loafer might have felt a little heavy in the Venetian heat, this airy alternative delivers the same sleek sophistication with a decidedly more summer-ready spirit.

When you think "big scarf," you (rightfully) think Lenny Kravitz. Soon, though, you'll be thinking Emma Watson. The actress and activist put together the perfect outfit for a stroll around Paris recently that was so simple it was borderline genius—and I'm rushing to re-create it. As promised, it involved a big, woolly, fringed scarf in head-turning cherry red. Watson wrapped the scarf around her neck (and half of her face—as I said, it was a big scarf) and let it do the talking.

But while the scarf was the loudest and funnest part of the outfit, it's actually the way Watson styled her off-white cable-knit crewneck sweater I'm looking at. I spend my winters in these, and I always feel like they make for a boring—if sensible—outfit. I love that the Harry Potter alum didn't just throw a plain peacoat over her simple sweater and call it a day. She wore it with baggy dark-wash jeans, anti-trend Nikes, and then pulled it together with the red scarf. It's like when you don't wear any makeup except for a red lip: simple, eye-catching, and incredibly effective.

Re-Create Emma Watson's Outfit

As far as style muses go, in my opinion, Emma Watson stands above the rest. There's something about the actor's refined, preppy aesthetic that always feels fresh and just ahead of the trend curve.

That said, these days, an Emma Watson sighting is sadly a rarity. Between being incredibly private and undertaking further study, she seldom attends entertainment industry events. Because of this, when she resurfaced at the Venice Film Festival this weekend, I was quick to take note. For a series of appearances, Watson opted for a series of '60s-inspired swing dresses (more on those in a moment). Similar though they may have been, they weren't the thing that piqued my interest—instead, my eyes went straight to her shoes: tan slingback heels.

Now, whilst I'm sure she didn't restrict herself to a cabin bag, it's safe to say that Emma was working with limited luggage space when it came to packing for her trip. Shoes are notorious for taking up room in any suitcase, so she clearly thought hard about which style would work with the majority of the outfits she was planning to wear. Swerving a more traditional beige nude, she favoured a richer, caramel-y hue, which proved to be just as versatile (and I'd argue, more stylish).

Choosing Gucci’s Signoria Slingback Pump(£840), the shoes feature an elegant pointed-toe with an incredibly chic gold chain sling. Clearly, Emma is into them in a big way, as she wore them as part of two different looks in a matter of hours, which also confirms just how versatile they are.

For her first look, she chose a powerful trio: a dill-green crepe minidress by Emilia Wickstead, which she accessorised with Prada’s Arqué leather shoulder bag in white, and the Gucci slingbacks. Now, I don't know about you, but even though I'm a fashion writer, I'd struggle to work out which shoe colour would work with such a statement shade. Emma, however, nailed it in one with her tan pair.

For her second ensemble, Watson wore the same shoes again, this time pairing them with a Gucci monogrammed shift dress. With the print taking centre stage, she handled this tricky styling moment with ease by grounding the bold pattern with those elegant tan slingbacks.

These expertly styled looks got me thinking about just how handy this shoe style is—if it works with both busy prints and vivid colours, there's barely a skirt, trouser or dress I can't see it styling well with.

A chic alternative to beige or cream, tan makes for a stylish change, especially in a luxurious patent finish, as with Emma's Gucci pair. The key lies in finding a true caramel tone, reminiscent of the rich, toffee-brown shades seen across the autumn/winter 2025 runways.

Unfortunately for me though, she isn’t one of those celebrities who we catch sight of very often, so on a rare occasion when she is spotted, you know she has my attention. And to my delight, last night was one of those happy occasions. Attending the premiere of We Dare to Dream in London, Watson joined Malala Yousafzai and director Waad Al-Kateab on the red carpet, styling an unexpected partywear look I plan to copy this event season.

On the late-November evening, Watson reached for a slim-cut, single-breasted suit set, which she paired with silver sparkly heels and a festive red lip. Though we love Watson for her classic, polished style, her looks are often dressed up with a subtle playful addition. In the past, she's opted for a dramatic collar or broad-shouldered jacket, but on this occasion, the actress let her strappy bralette peek out beneath her blazer for a stylish twist that exudes understated glamour.

You see, I also have freckles, but I wasn't always comfortable with them (over the years, I've tried to fade them with chemical peels and brightening skincare products before simply hiding them behind foundation), so it was nice seeing one of my favorite characters and, later, one of my favorite actresses show them off.

Championing courtside elegance, Emma Watson maintained her reputation for refined, chic dressing at the 2023 US Open Tennis Championships in New York this week. Not one for frequent public appearances, when we spot Watson out and about, we know we’re in for a fashionable treat. Watson often favours sharp tailoring for big events, and the US Open was no exception. Styling a chic, white double-breasted suit, she put a playful twist on her otherwise formal, black-and-white outfit by styling her look with casual strappy sandals from The Row and a halterneck vest top from Khaite.

I’m not sure what we did to deserve it, but this month we've had not one, but two Emma Watson sightings. Earlier this month, we had the good fortune to spot Emma Watson in a dressed up 90’s look to view the Academy Awards. To balance out this double sighting, this latest outfit is a more everyday style that we can, and intend to, replicate as soon as tomorrow.

As far as 2023 trends go, it's clear that Watson has taken the revival of '90s minimalism in her stride. For this particular outing, Watson compiled a paired-back look of white tee, suede jacket, leather miniskirt and knee-high boots (courtesy of Reformation) that could easily have been taken from any London girl's Pinterest board, or Rachel Green’s wardrobe for that matter. The contrasting textures add a rich considered feel to the overall look, and is a style that we have spotted in many of our street-style spotting pursuits.

While vacationing in Venice over the weekend, Watson started with something we all wear on vacation. Yes, that would be a Reformation dress. It's official—skinny jeans are back. In a rare public appearance, at the Schiaparelli haute couture show no less, Emma Watson took on fashion's most divisive jeans style with a playful take on proportions that included grey skinnies, an architectural blazer and chunky Dr. Martens for good measure. Knowing that every out-of-style trend will eventually make its way back again, I held on to my trusty over-the-knee boots even after the style was dubbed "out" a few years ago. I was holding out hope that a handful of celebrities would dare to wear the controversial shoe trend again one day, catalyzing its comeback. And it's a good thing I did because, just as I predicted, over-the-knee boots are heading for a comeback. 

Whereas I used to go months without spotting a pair of the extra-tall boots on anyone, let alone a celebrity, I've recently been seeing them everywhere. For a pre-BAFTAs event hosted by Chanel, Emma Watson wore a pair from the almost sold-out collaboration between Jimmy Choo and Mugler. Following the award show, Pam & Tommy star Lily James was seen wearing a mint-green pair of Roberto Cavalli boots to an after-party. And that was only in the last 72 hours or so. More advocates of the trend include Irina Shayk, Kim Kardashian, and Dua Lipa.

But it's not just celebrities. During fashion month, nearly every designer included at least one pair of over-the-knee boots in their fall/winter 2022 collections, from Bottega Veneta and Max Mara to Michael Kors and Khaite. Street style stars outside of the shows also frequented the style, including Caroline Daur and Courtney Trop. Suffice to say, over-the-knee boots are back in a major way, whether you were ready for their return or not.

Typically, the jewellery you see on the red carpet is so eye-wateringly expensive that Hollywood celebrities borrow them for a strict number of hours, and it comes with security to stand on guard. Last night, Emma Watson attended her first red carpet event in two years, the Earthshot Prize ceremony in London, and she wore jewellery from Missoma that we can actually buy. Watson has long been a champion of sustainable fashion, and so it’s not a surprise, given the event, that her red carpet look had a very considered message.

She turned to London designer Harris Reed, who only graduated from Central Saint Martins last year and is one of the most-talked-about names in fashion thanks to his magical gender-fluid designs. Watson wore a dress from his S/S 22 collection, in which he upcycled second-hand wedding dresses and groomswear from Oxfam, creating striking looks that blend gowns with tuxedos. Watson’s reimagined wedding dress was modernised with an asymmetric silhouette and an open back with romantic, intricate lace straps falling over the shoulders, and she wore it over a pair of black flared trousers.

As for the jewellery, she layered earrings, bracelets and rings from Harris Reed’s collection with Missoma. They’re just as opulent as any of his designs, with pearl, star and moon details and cocktail rings that all have an antique charm and manage to be both gothic and romantic. Watson wore two pairs of the pearl-and-crescent earrings, layered bracelets and seven of the cocktail rings, looking like she had raided a Victorian jewellery box. Fashion is exploiting workers all over the world and causing deforestation and climate devastation, with over 150 million trees cut down every year to make fabric, many taken from endangered forests. Furthermore, fashion is polluting our oceans, with microplastics from our clothing responsible for 85% of waste washed up on our shorelines. However, there are solutions.

Here are my pointers in helping you tackle the problem of unsustainable shopping habits…

Habit #1: Buying Exclusively Fast Fashion

Instead: Upcycle Your Own Wardrobe and Shop Vintage When Possible

One-hundred billion items of clothing are produced annually, and 50% of fast fashion is disposed of within a year, ending up in our landfills.

Instead, upcycle your wardrobe, where possible. Rescue those neglected items at the back of your cupboard so that they can be loved again! Channel your inner sewing bee. Embrace fixing, altering, and mending.

Habit #2: Not Researching a Brand's Ethics Before Purchasing

Instead: Prioritize Socially Responsible Brands

Don't buy from brands that don't pay fair wages and aren’t transparent about their supply chain. Instead, show love to those brands that are sourcing responsibly and adhering to social responsibility. Non-organic cotton is the largest pesticide consuming crop. One polyester dress can take over 200 years to biodegrade. This is why, when possible, it's best to buy organic, natural fibers. Pledge to buy sustainably sourced viscose. Spend a little extra time researching brands (my sustainability bible is the Good on You website). It can be a minefield out there, but @goodonyou_app (which is also supported by Emma Watson) is the world's leading source for fashion brand ratings. They pull all the information together and use expert analysis to give each brand an easy-to-understand score.

Known for being a fairly private celebrity, Emma Watson isn’t out and about every day. So when she does make a public appearance, it makes it all the more special. Over the weekend, Watson stepped out to attend the New York premiere of Little Women, appearing on the red carpet flanked by her equally stylish co-stars, including Laura Dearn and Saoirse Ronan  

For the event, Watson chose a black floor-length gown from Balenciaga’s recent S/S 20 collection and paired the dress with thigh-high velvet boots. Though, if you’re thinking this was your average, run-of-the-mill dress-and-boots combo, you would be mistaken. Not one to follow the crowd, Watson made this dress entirely her own, opting to tuck its hem into the top of her boot on the left side. 

Creating what would ordinarily be a revealing leg split, Watson was instead able to show off the length of her navy-coloured boots. It was a unique styling choice, to say the least, and one we think only Watson has the fashion prowess to pull off. 

In terms of hair and makeup, the actress opted for a messy top-knot and bold lip. Emma then finished her look with a shell-shaped clutch, also by Balenciaga.

Emma Watson really stepped up her fashion game this year, as she launched the Instagram account The Press Tour, which features her discussing the sustainable pieces she wears for her promotional tours. She's since introduced us to many incredible ethical labels, such as New York jewellery brand Catbird and sustainable sneaker brand Veja. But she has also stayed loyal to many of the labels she first wore in the spotlight when promoting the Harry Potter franchise. One of her favourite fashion houses? Oscar de la Renta. In fact, Emma Watson fans might remember the dramatic grey gown she wore to the final Harry Potter premiere.

According to picture agency Rex, Emma Watson's most popular outfit this year was a white lace minidress by Oscar de la Renta. The dress was complete with a black twisted bow across the bodice and shoulder. She wore the prom-style dress to a Beauty and the Beast press conference in Los Angeles. "The white bespoke dress was created in Oscar de la Renta's New York atelier, featuring hand embroidery on silk taffeta and a silk faille bow, both made in the Italian mill Taroni," Emma wrote about her outfit on her Instagram page.

Watson went on to say that the mill her gown was made at "specialises in the highest quality couture fabrics, and is committed to reducing its environmental impact, including investing in solar energy and committing to removing all toxic chemicals from its supply chain by 2020. The hand embroidered silk taffeta panels have been cut and folded by hand, shaped using natural starch. The dress also features a repurposed zip from an unused sample."

For The Beauty and the Beast promo tour, Emma Watson created an Instagram account called @the_press_tour to share detailed fashion credits for all of her outfits, explaining how each brand she wears is sustainable. Now Emma is promoting her latest project, The Circle, so the outfit-of-the-day posts are back.

For interviews in San Francisco, Emma wore a striking all-red look by independent designer Gabriela Hearst, who Emma explains has "ethical values at the heart of her brand." Emma shows the off-the-shoulder trend isn't going anywhere soon, pairing the shoulder-baring red bodysuit (which is currently available on Net-a-Porter for £355) with matching wool flared trousers (£705) and a classic, sweeping silk trench coat by the same designer. She is also clearly already keeping an eye on the A/W 17 trends, as this head-to-toe-red idea is set to be a key look in six months' time.

Emma often introduces us to amazing sustainable jewellery brands, and for this look, she wore gold hoops and rings by Stockholm-based brand All Blues, which handcrafts every piece in its local, third-generation foundry.

This isn't the only time Emma has given us a lesson in how to wear red, as on the press tour she also wore a red Rosie Assoulin dress cinched in with a red waist belt. Once again, she doubled up on the red by wearing matching red lipstick.

Emma Watson has been using her Beauty and the Beast promo tour as a chance to showcase the best of sustainable fashion. She set up an Instagram account, @the_press_tour, where she tags the ethical clothing brands she is wearing for all of her promotional duties, from new trainer brands such as Good Guys Don't Wear Leather to her favourite sustainable jewellery.

But we think she saved the best until last on this promo tour: In her Instagram on her last day of press duties, she is wearing the most amazing shoes she has worn all month. Emma wore a black body by Woron, trousers by Gabriela Hearst and a check overcoat, but she added drama to the minimal outfit with a pair of black furry sliders.

Her black faux-fur sandals are by New York–based designer Parme Marin and are £205. Although they are currently sold out on Reformation.com, you can press the "want" button to be alerted if they come back in stock. Described by Reformation as a "faux fur coat for your feet," they are handmade in Morocco and are sustainable (of course), as Parme Marin mixes recycled materials with new objects.

Dressing for the airport can be tricky: Of course, you want to be comfortable and practical, but not everyone is willing to sacrifice their style for the occasion. We've gone over lots of different hacks for travel dressing, from the worst things to wear at an airport to how to keep your clothes clean at the airport. But not everyone abides by the "rules"—Emma Watson's most recent look at LAX actually features one piece many people avoid wearing to the airport altogether: a short minidress.

While we're obsessed with her chic Edun dress, it's tricky to wear on a plane because you'll face the dreaded skin-on-aeroplane-seat situation. All too often, talking in length about a pair of shoes can be dismissed as frivolous, but this year, Emma Watson has shown how it can be incredibly powerful to discuss, in detail, every single item of clothing we wear. The actress consistently uses her celebrity status to incite change, and this year she has shouted from the rooftops of social media about sustainable fashion in an attempt to convince us to make smarter choices about where we shop.

Watson often posts outfit-of-the-day posts on Instagram, tagging new brands she is excited about and writing detailed captions explaining why these are her go-to designers. While promoting Beauty and the Beast, she even set up a separate Instagram account @the_press_tour, to share detailed fashion credits about every single outfit she is wearing.

Ethical fashion is an important issue to Emma. She signed up for the Green Carpet Challenge in 2015, agreeing that every single piece she wears on the red carpet would be sustainable. Her Calvin Klein Met Gala 2016 gown, for example, was made out of recycled plastic bottles and her Emilia Wickstead Beauty and the Beast gown is made from end-of-line fabric, and that's far chicer than it sounds.

She isn't just showing how fashion houses can use innovative technology to create magnificent, sustainable red carpet and day-to-day pieces, however. She also sees it as her fashion mission to highlight emerging cutting-edge brands that are produced responsibly, and her stylist, Rebecca Corbin Murray, is constantly scouting for new labels by crowdsourcing on Instagram. Last year, Emma even collaborated with ethical label Zady on a capsule collection, once again proving you can dress stylishly while still sticking to your principles.

One of Emma Watson's go-to jewellery brands is Catbird, which creates handmade delicate pieces in New York. Emma wore its earrings and cuffs to the Beauty and the Beast London premiere.

On the first day of Emma's Beauty and the Beast promo tour, she wore a pair of white trainers by Good Guys Don't Wear Leather, a vegan shoe brand designed in Paris.

Leaving the photocall in Paris, Emma wore a bodysuit by Scandinavian brand Woron, which creates sustainable and vegan lingerie.

Watson is one of many celebrities to carry Simon Miller's cult Bonsai bucket bag this year, but she has highlighted its sustainability too. Simon Miller produces the entire collection in the United States using organic mills to reduce impact, and works with independent mills in France and Japan. As Emma's stylist also explained on Instagram, "the brand focuses heavily on incorporating OZONE technology in their production, as well as employing ceramic stones in the denim wash processes." 

Emma proves that eco doesn't mean expensive with her pair of trainers by French brand Veja, which are an affordable £87. Rebecca Corbin Murray explained on Instagram that the brand uses recycled plastic bottles and wild rubber to create the soles.

At a New York screening of City of Joy in November, Emma wore rings by the German handmade sustainable jewellery label Golpira, which uses fair trade gold nuggets. Rings worth saving up for…

New York–based ethical fashion brand Zady is one of Emma Watson's favourite labels, so much so that this year she approached the company to create a capsule collection of timeless pieces inspired by her style. The pieces became available to buy on Zady's website as she wore them. 

On a trip with the UN, Emma wore a white shirt by Tome and explained the story behind it on Instagram: "My white shirt is made from organic cotton and is part of its White Shirt Project campaign. The project was conceived in 2014 to raise funds and awareness for the Freedom for All charity, which is fighting human trafficking and modern-day slavery."

Emma wore a tuxedo by Maiyet to meet Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau in September. Emma highlighted on Instagram the benefits of shopping with Maiyet, writing, "They are committed to forging partnerships with artisans globally and [have] entered into a strategic partnership with @buildanest, an independent nonprofit organization dedicated to training and developing artisan businesses to promote entrepreneurship, prosperity and dignity in places that need it most."

At a Chanel film event at MoMA in New York City, Emma turned to Australian sustainable label Kitx for her crushed velvet black evening dress. Kitx is committed to using organic, renewed and recycled fabrics, and Rebecca explained on Instagram that this specific dress has recycled polyester zips from recycled clothing or reused plastic bottles. 

Another ethical designer the actress often turns to is New York label Behno. As the star wrote on Instagram, "Behno's mission is to redefine and bring awareness to the craft and character of 'made in India.' Behno aims to inspire change and improve factory conditions globally to better the quality of life and safety of individuals in the garmenting trade in developing countries. They work in partnership with international factories that adhere to rigid factory compliances." She wore its chic trench coat on the red carpet at the premiere of Colonia.

At the aforementioned MoMA film benefit, Emma wore two-strap heels using recycled polyester microsuede by Los Angeles–based vegan shoe label Susi Studio.

One of Watson's go-to jewellery brands is Daisy Knights, a London-based sustainable brand that produces all pieces in the UK using recycled gold and silver. 

At a HeForShe talk at the United Nations in New York, Emma wore a pair of simple hoops by affordable London label Tada & Toy, which Rebecca sourced via The Acey, an online boutique which stocks the new coolest ethical names.

Can you blame us for getting a bit excited about the return of Beauty and the Beast? For anyone in their 20s and 30s, the Disney film was a pretty big deal growing up. Therefore it’s no surprise that the official full-length trailer, which debuted today, struck a chord with our nostalgic sides.

The complete peek is below, and while anyone familiar with the animated original might recognize the storyline and some of the dialogue, it’s the costumes that are in a whole new light. We’ve already seen teasers for the clothing—specifically for Belle's, played by Emma Watson, iconic golden ball gown. But the period piece trailer also suggests that the film will bring to life the ornate extravagance often seen in 18th century French fashion, as well as Belle's humbler, elegant style—something we can really appreciate now that we're older.

There are plenty of things that inspire us about Emma Watson. The actress and UN Women Goodwill Ambassador is thoughtful, passionate, and outspoken about issues like inequality and the He for She project, so it's no surprise that even when it comes to fashion, Watson finds ways to stand up for her beliefs. Her latest project is a partnership with Zady, a clothing line that aims to combat fast fashion.

"Emma learned about the sustainability work we are leading and approached us to develop a bespoke collection," said the brand's founder Maxine Bédat. "Of course we were thrilled!"

Zady's clothing is made sustainably in partnership with farmers, spinners, and sewers around the globe, and the brand aims to create items that are both flattering and environmentally friendly. "We are the ones with the power to change this industry," stated Bédat. "To direct it to make clothes that fit us, that make us look good, that are designed to last, that don't pollute the planet, and that treat the women on the other end who are making our clothes with decency."

Her stylist, Sarah Slutsky, took to Instagram to explain the story behind Watson's unique red carpet ensemble: "With the help of @ecoage, this 5 piece look is created from 3 fabrics woven from yarns all made from recycled plastic bottles," she captioned her photo. 

Slutsky goes on to explain that the look is meant to be repurposed—the trousers can be worn by themselves, and the dramatic train can grace another red carpet, eliminating the wastefulness of a single-use outfit.
