Slim-fit pants have had a great resurgence in the last few years (whether we like it or not). Cigarette pants and even capri pants have been at the forefront of pant trends lately, but some fashion people may be growing fatigued of the restrictions that tighter pants have. Emma Roberts may be one of them. She was just spotted in NYC wearing the absolute opposite of cigarette pants for spring. While on a walk in the city, she sported a classic navy Adidas tee with red Adidas Gazelle sneakers styled with a pair of baggy, low-rise khaki pants. She kept her accessories to a minimum with just a pair of tortoise aviator sunglasses by Celine.

Coachella weekend one all the way. It's the best. I love Coachella—I've been coming for like 10 years. Now, it's so nostalgic for me that I get excited for the nostalgia alone.

Do you prefer sneakers, boots, or heels for a festival?

Boots all the way. I did wake up this morning having to put Band-Aids on my feet, so I think sneakers are probably the smarter choice, but I always end up in a boot.

What trend are you bringing back this Coachella season?

Bell-bottom jeans! I love a '70s vibe. I'm very into that silhouette right now.

What festival fashion do you like to avoid?

Honestly, one of my favorite things about festivals is people-watching—everyone is just doing their own thing and really expressing themselves. I don't want to hate on anyone's vibe!

Is there anything you've worn that you ended up regretting?

Oh, totally. I've had some Coachella misses—like unflattering shorts and risky bathing-suit situations. I'd say [to] make sure your denim shorts aren't too tight. I've made that mistake, and it was very uncomfortable.

Of the iconic characters you've played, which one are you channeling this season?

I'm definitely channeling Aquamarine vibes. I'm having an Aquamarine summer.

What's been your favorite look you've worn this weekend so far?

I'd have to say the sheer look I wore from Lovers and Friends. It's comfy. I feel good in it, but I am going to have to change out of my really cute shoes for the actual festival.

Where are you most excited to be this weekend?

I was so excited to see Lady Gaga. That was a highlight. I saw her the last time she played, and it was iconic. Also Revolve Festival—can't wait to see who shows up there!

What are some of your favorite summer trends you're excited to wear?

I love going bathing-suit shopping. I'm always hunting for the perfect one. I've been really into brands like Eres, and there's one I'm obsessed with right now that's like a knit style, Hunza G!

Do you have any fun trips planned?

I do! I spend a lot of time in the Hamptons in the summer, which is my favorite. I also have a few weddings to go to, and I love shopping for a summer wedding. Mostly, though, I just want to relax, spend time with my son, and take him to the beach. He loves a beach day.

Are there any designer collections you're loving lately?

I always love Ralph Lauren—he always nails it. I'm obsessed with Zimmermann for summer; they always deliver. And I've been dying over the new Chloé. It feels like old Chloé but fresh, very nostalgic but new. I'm absolutely obsessed.

Though it's rarely discussed on the same scale as other red carpet events, the annual Baby2Baby Gala consistently supplies us with top-tier looks. And this year's was no different. Held in West Hollywood on Saturday night, the 2022 Baby2Baby Gala brought together some of L.A.'s best-dressed moms (and more), from Olivia Wilde to Kylie Jenner, to help bring in necessary funds for the organization's work, which involves providing children living in poverty with diapers, clothing, and other essentials. Altogether, an incredible $10 million was raised. 

Given that this year's honoree was Kim Kardashian, there was no way the night wouldn't be full of fashion moments. To receive her Giving Tree Award and announce a $1 million donation to Baby2Baby, the Skims founder chose a Barbie pink, fitted Balenciaga dress with a long train (her specialty recently) from the brand's spring/summer 2023 collection, pairing it with a matching mini bag from the brand as well as blade-like heels. We're literally obsessed with Emma Roberts's latest television project, Tell Me Lies.

In 2021, Roberts signed a first-look partnership with Hulu to develop television series under her production banner, Belletrist TV. Through this collaboration, Roberts is working alongside her producing partner, Karah Preiss, to bring books to life on-screen. The first project that Roberts and her team at Belletrist TV are bringing to life with Hulu is Tell Me Lies, a twisted modern love story based on Carola Lovering's novel.

For the latest episode of Who What Wear With Hillary Kerr, Roberts shares what drew her to adapt Tell Me Lies for the small screen, the staple pieces in her wardrobe, and which trends she's excited to try this fall. Hint: Roberts probably won't be testing out too many Y2K trends as the temperatures cool down.

Can we talk about your new series, Tell Me Lies.

Tell Me Lies is based on a book by Carola Lovering. It's book that I was aware of, but I hadn't read, and my producing partner, Karah Preiss, called me, and she's like, "Okay, someone sent me this book, and I read it, and I can't stop thinking about it. So I need you to read it."

Anything she tells me to read, I read immediately. I read it in like three days and just could not put it down. I too could not shake it. It's essentially about a relationship, but that's the tip of the iceberg. It's a very compulsive read.

You've been in front of the camera, you've read a million scripts, you've seen a zillion versions of what something can be, and then you see how it's actually made. What is it like being on the other side of it?

First of all, it has to be there from the beginning. A lot of people will say, "It'll get there, it'll get there." I always feel like if the kernel of the idea or the magic isn't there to begin with, it's not going to get there the more people that get involved or the more questions that get asked or the more notes that get put on something.

I find that the things that end up being even remotely good were kind of good from the jump—at least in my experience.

With Tell Me Lies, the book was already amazing. Translating that to TV, I was like, "Okay, how are we going to do this?" Then Meaghan [Oppenheimer] turned in a pilot that was truly one of the best pilots I've ever read.

Then we go into casting, and we ended up getting our first choice for our main character, Lucy, who's Grace Van Patten, who's amazing. I just feel like we got really lucky on this.

What are your three favorite wardrobe items, and are there any trends that you're excited about for fall?

Right now, I'm wearing a white polo Louis Vuitton long-sleeve T-shirt—even though it's very hot—with some shorts. I was wearing high heels, but then I put on Birkenstocks before we started talking—which is a huge secret—but I'm going to reveal it to you.

I'm obsessed with denim again—even though it's not getting cool in L.A.— and I've been pulling out my jeans. I love Re/Done. I think they're the best. I also love my Mother jeans, which if I recall from your newsletter, you like Mother jeans, too?

Sure do.

For me, a Dôen dress. I wear them day, I wear them night, to any occasion. Heels, flats, I love it. They're the best.

Are there any trends that you're excited to explore for fall?

Here's what I'm not excited for: I'm not excited to feel old when I see teenagers walking around wearing what I wore in 2005. That's what I'm not excited for. Y2K coming back is scaring me beyond my wildest nightmares. 

I was made fun of for all of those trends at one point and then got rid of them. Now people are bringing them back to me, and it's definitely scaring me a little bit.

I'm not doing kitten heels. I'm not doing trucker hats. I'm not doing visors. My least favorite is the thick-strap tank tops. I thought we were done with this.

The one trend I will get on board with is a choker. Remember those little plastic chokers that we all wore? I'll wear those again. Look: I'll wear a flip-flop—I'm not gonna lie—which I know is so unfashion, but I will.

In all seriousness, people are bringing the old Dior Saddle bag, and I'm very there for that. I love that. Look: I'll bedazzle a jacket if I have to.

In April, I had the pleasure of attending the Kate Spade New York fall 2022 presentation of its new collection. I’ve always had a love for Kate Spade. In fact, when I was applying for fashion school, I did my entry project on Kate Spade, and working for the brand was my first retail job when I moved to L.A. at 18. The presentation was held in a townhouse in Soho, with the overall theme being hosting an open house or housewarming party. When I arrived, I could see the models mingling as if we were attending a party. There were tons of great breakfast snacks and coffee, and of course, I could see all of the beautiful clothes. 

The best part of my morning was yet to come, as I knew I would be bumping into Emma Roberts soon to talk about the collection and all things fashion. Roberts was wearing an adorable red-and-pink minidress and matching coat, looking like the picture of New York City chic. When we got a few moments together, I asked her about everything from trends she's predicting for fall to maternitywear hacks. Keep scrolling to see what we talked about.

Of all of the great pieces that are debuting in the Kate Spade fall 2022 collection, which ones are you most excited about? 

Well, what I love about the collection is that it looks like you can mix and match every piece. I love mixing plaid with polka dots and how the accessories have a ’90s feel if you look at some of the handbags. I know they’re bringing back the Sam bag, which I am already coveting. But I just love that it all seems very wearable and can be dressed up or dressed down.

Kate Spade has always had a special place in my heart. It was actually my first retail job. What do you love about the brand? 

When I think of Kate Spade, I always think of the middle school version of me who wanted a Kate Spade bag more than anything in the world. I remember I saved up for a Kate Spade pencil case, and I just thought I was the coolest. In retrospect, it was probably a makeup bag that I, in middle school, was using for pencils and just felt so chic with my Kate Spade pencil case. For me, the middle schooler in me is like, "Wow, I can’t believe you get to go to the Kate Spade fall presentation.”

Since spring is here and summer is fast approaching, what are the items that are currently or will be in heavy rotation in your wardrobe?

I feel like I have been cold for the past six months here on the East Coast, so summer is not even on my radar right now. But I cannot wait for swimsuit season. I love to go bathing-suit shopping, and I love to find great vintage denim shorts. I feel like I can’t ever buy new denim shorts and have them look good, so I’m always hunting for vintage denim shorts for summer.

Since we are at the Kate Spade fall 2022 preview, what trends do you predict will be big for this upcoming fall? 

I’m not a huge trend predictor by any means, but for myself, I’m excited Kate Spade has done a new version of a leopard coat. I am in need of a new leopard coat, and I think with leopard you can never go wrong. I saw that they have a new leopard-print coat coming out, and I’m really excited to get my hands on that. 

Maternity style has changed a lot, with some of our favorite A-listers growing their families, such as Shay Mitchell, Rihanna, and, of course, you! How has becoming a mom changed your personal style? 

I’m definitely less precious about my clothing. I wear it. I enjoy it, and if it gets ruined or messy, then it does, and that’s okay. … Because a bunch of my friends are pregnant right now and are asking me what to wear maternity-wise, I get stuff in bigger sizes from Zara and places like that. Just easy clothes to throw on in bigger sizes.

I adored the pink gingham suit you posted on your Instagram back in February. When it comes to swimwear, what styles do you love for this season? 

Thank you! It’s from Solid&Striped. When it comes to swim, I love high-waisted bottoms so I don’t really have to worry about what’s happening with my abs or lack thereof. I haven’t done my swimwear shopping yet, but I love a high-waisted bottom. I think it takes a little pressure off while enjoying the beach.

One of my favorite roles you played was Chanel Oberlin in Scream Queens because of her hilarious, iconic lines but also because of her chic style. Do you ever pull fashion inspiration from roles you’ve played and apply that to your real-life wardrobe? 

I mean, my outfit today is not, not inspired by Chanel. I’ll leave it at that!

I can recall a time, around 2008 I think it was, when black skinny jeans were life. They were one of the coolest things to wear, perfect with the influx of bold-shouldered Balmain rip-off blazers and spiked platform shoes fashion editors favoured, cool with a Breton and ankle boots to get that French-girl look, and great on a night out with a nice top. Like many other basic denim styles, they have become a relied-upon but oft-forgotten part of our wardrobe. It's been a long time since I felt excited about wearing a pair of black jeans, and I'm pretty sure the ones I did own (a nice little cropped flare from Frame) are languishing somewhere in the back of my closet. No more shall you be overlooked, my inky jeans! Because in the past few days, a flurry of celebrity arbiters of taste have decreed the darkest of denim washes back in fashion. Lily Allen has been wearing her black skinnies on multiple nights out with multiple cute tops. Kendall Jenner has both a baggy-fit, straight-leg pair and a flared corduroy style, and they are her trusted partner for crop tops. Bella Hadid has opted in for a super-low-rise, skater-girl vibe, while Emma Roberts has stayed true to the '00s with some ankle-grazing skinnies.

All of the A-listers in this gallery have styled their chosen black jeans very differently and are wearing them in different cities and on different continents. What this variety does showcase is that it's less about a cut and more about the fact that black is back for autumn 2021. So will you take their lead and swap in some jet-coloured jeans this season? You know we love a good celeb-approved affordable find around here, but a discovery is all the sweeter when it's on sale. Emma Roberts recently made $90 heels look like a million bucks at an event for her company Belletrist, where she expertly mixed high (Celine) and low (Sam Edelman). 

Roberts wore the Sam Edelman Everly Mules, which are currently marked down from $150 to $90 as part of Nordstrom's Anniversary Sale. I'm obsessed with the very on-trend square toe as well as the artsy block heel with a swirl pattern. What's not to love? I've said it before and I've said it again—Emma Roberts finds the best affordable clothes. It's not often we see celebrities at the airport these days, but Emma Roberts just took flight and wore a comfortable denim outfit for the occasion. As a remote editor who's been working from home since 2015, I have to admit that I've gotten pretty lazy with my WFH wardrobe (as in sweats and slippers on most days). Until now, that is. I've been working from home remotely for 4.5 years, and my typical WFH uniform has always been a T-shirt or sweatshirt/sweater and jogger pants or stretchy jeans. What can I do/wear/buy to make it a little more exciting?

There’s so much you can do to spruce up a WFH uniform. Luckily, there are a lot of very cute, chic loungewear brands out there right now that will make you feel put together and elevated so that you don't have to sacrifice comfort for style. Depending on what kind of WFH style you prefer, you can choose between elevated pajamas, effortless dresses, or chic top-and-bottom sets. Since wearing a full sweatsuit isn't very practical in the summer, what's a good alternative?

Silk or cotton flowy dresses that don’t have a lot of hardware and are comfortable, chic, and practical. Love classic Ugg slippers for the house. We are big fans of Jenny Bird for everyday home wear—not only because it’s a great price point but also because her pieces are modern and cool and range from delicate to statement. The biggest WFH outfit mistake is sacrificing comfort for style, e.g., wearing things like tight, non-stretch denim; outfits with lots of hardware (zippers, buttons)—so restrictive. Feeling comfortable is most important when you’re at home, and not compromising style is the key. The act of putting on an outfit in the morning when you WFH is important because it lifts your mood and makes you feel more motivated. Nothing is wrong with adding a little lip color either.

There are some purchases I agonize over for days. I pin it to my secret Pinterest board, compare it to everything else on my wish list, and consider the specific places and occasions I'll wear it. Maybe it's because I live in L.A., but I'm always a tad confused on how to style tights. They're a winter essential that can be slightly tricky to pull off considering they're particularly difficult to style with certain shoes or hemline lengths. Emma Roberts has proven time and again she has some of the best street style in the business.
