However, for the 2026 Oscars, it wasn’t chintzy sequins, naked dresses, or bold bombshell looks that paid homage to the Golden Age of cinema that dominated the red carpet—though all of those were present—but a slew of bridal white looks.

It’s a fitting move considering an industry that’s been dominated by matrimonial discourse over the past few weeks since Law Roach dropped that bombshell alluding to the fact Zendaya and Tom Holland might’ve tied the knot. For her part, the actress did not choose to honour her possible new nuptials by wearing a white gown as she did at Louis Vuitton’s autumn/winter 2026 collection presentation during Paris Fashion Week, though she did spend the weekend that just passed at Las Vegas’ Little White Wedding Chapel promoting her upcoming A24 dark romantic comedy, The Drama.

Of course, with so many iconic movie brides to reference—Mrs. Robinson in The Graduate! Sophie in Mamma Mia!—Juliet in Love Actually—it’s only fitting that this trope gets thrust into the spotlight on film’s night of nights. Leading the charge was none other than Emma Stone, who arrived in a bespoke Louis Vuitton gown. Featuring an open back, shimmering details, and severe capped sleeves that emulate the Empire era, the two-time Best Actress winner arrived at the Dolby Theatre to mark her seventh nomination at the ceremony.

Later in the evening, Gwyneth Paltrow, who recently made her comeback to the screen as a past-her-prime actress in Marty Supreme, made an appearance to add another entry in her canon of memorable red carpet looks. But rather than wearing a blushing pink taffeta Ralph Lauren number or burgundy velvet Tom-Ford-for-Gucci suit as she did in the ‘90s, she took a far more risqué route in an ivory silk Giorgio Armani Privé gown that featured an exaggerated slit up the side.

Speaking to VOGUE, Fanning revealed that the dress also held sentimental value as it was embroidered with wisteria motifs that paid tribute to the flowers that clung to her childhood home in the American South. When I spotted this endearing shot of Elle and Dakota Fanning walking arm-in-arm, sharing a laugh, I knew I ought to be analysing their outfits like a proper fashion editor. But instead, my mind was occupied—darting straight to another iconic sister duo. Between their matching blonde hair, the understated monochrome, and Dakota’s perfectly crinkled Balenciaga city bag, the Olsen parallels were impossible to ignore.

The more I thought about it, the more striking the similarities became. Elle and Dakota, like Mary-Kate and Ashley, share more than just sibling status and blonde locks. Style-wise, both sets have long gravitated towards imitably chic, “undone” outfits, effortless styling, pared-back palettes, and subtle bohemian touches. It's 2 p.m. when Elle Fanning breezes into the courtyard restaurant of legendary Los Angeles hotel Chateau Marmont. At 5'9" in black leather ballet flats, she carries herself with a swan-like confidence. Her skin (the subject of countless L'Oréal campaigns) is glowing, and her glossy blonde hair is pinned back in an elegant bun. She is wrapped in a chic camel trench coat over a striped green shirtdress from The Row.

The 27-year-old is remarkably well put-together for someone who was partying the night before with her older sister and fellow actor, Dakota Fanning, at one of the final shows of Sabrina Carpenter's Short n' Sweet Tour. I know this because it was all over the internet when the duo got "arrested" by Carpenter for being "too hot."

It didn't come as a complete surprise to the Fanning sisters when (following in the footsteps of Nicole Kidman, Anne Hathaway, and Gigi Hadid at previous shows) the pink fluffy handcuffs headed their way. They were given prior warning, so they were able to dress accordingly, which they did in very Sabrina Carpenter–esque lingerie-style slip dresses. "We're gonna be on the screen, so … you want to look good!" laughs Fanning before glancing at the menu and quickly deciding on a Coke, Greek salad, and side of fries. "When I told Dakota I was gonna wear a slip dress, she was like, 'Okay, well, you're wearing that, so I need to wear something cute too!'"

Fanning feels very at home at Chateau Marmont. Having made her movie debut at age 2, playing a younger version of Dakota's character in the 2001 film I Am Sam, Fanning was "running through the halls" filming Sofia Coppola's Somewhere (2010) right here by the time she was 11. "There are so many people who still work here who are like, 'We knew you when you were this big!'" she smiles. "I feel cozy here."

Her breakout performance in the cult film, in which she starred opposite Stephen Dorff, paved the way for major roles to come, including in J.J. Abrams's 2011 sci-fi hit Super 8 and the Disney blockbuster Maleficent. In the last decade alone, Fanning has achieved what few stars manage in their entire career, gracefully treading the line between indie films, like art house horror The Neon Demon, and acclaimed TV series such as satirical comedy-drama The Great, which ran for three seasons on Hulu between 2020 and 2023.

For her performance in the latter—in which she played Catherine, the 18th-century empress of Russia—Fanning was nominated for a Golden Globe for three years running. This year, she's been recognized for a fourth time for her supporting role in Joachim Trier's poignant Norwegian family drama Sentimental Value.

Fanning has a relatively small but no less significant part in the film set in Oslo, Norway. The story follows the fractured relationship between an acclaimed but troubled film director, Gustav (played by Stellan Skarsgård), and his grown-up daughters after the death of their mother. Making a personal film about his complicated family history, Gustav tries to enlist his actress daughter (played by Renate Reinsve) to star in it. She refuses, and tension ensues when he casts glossy A-list American film star Rachel Kemp (played by Fanning) instead.

It's an understated but deeply memorable performance from Fanning, who was a huge fan of Trier's 2021 romantic comedy-drama The Worst Person in the World, which also starred Reinsve. "I was obsessed with it," she says, taking a sip of her Coke. "I would have wanted to be in any of his films, even if it was just, like, one line!"

There was just one thing standing in the way: Fanning's enviable but increasingly hectic schedule. Just as she was wrapping A Complete Unknown (the 2024 Bob Dylan biopic in which she starred opposite Timothée Chalamet), Fanning signed on to play the lead in the multimillion-dollar action movie Predator: Badlands and was due to start filming in New Zealand when she was offered the part in Sentimental Value.

What seemed like a logistical impossibility eventually worked out. Fanning was able to fly to Oslo for a week of rehearsals with Trier and then go to New Zealand for three months for Predator before flying straight back to Europe to film Sentimental Value.

It wasn't ideal, even for someone with Fanning's stamina. "I've never not had a day to process," she admits. "But I knew that both of them would work out. I never wavered in that."

When I ask if she ever worries when committing to a big project that she might miss out on another equally desirable opportunity, she muses, "I'm more like, 'What will be will be.' You have to love the project you're doing enough that if something else goes away, then it's okay. Otherwise, there would be this constant regret, and I really don't feel that way."

Fanning is grateful for the formative week in Oslo with Trier months before she began filming, as she has no doubt it hugely informed her performance of Rachel.

"That's kind of how he works," she explains. "We rehearse. He films all of the rehearsals that you do with each actor. And then you have long conversations with him and share stories, and it gets quite personal. He will mold the character to you and see what he needs to take out and what he needs to add."

Given she's playing an actor with celebrity status who was a former child star and is no stranger to big franchise movies, it's hard not to make a direct comparison between Fanning and her character. "She's not me—at all!—but there are some similarities," she says. "In your career, everything ebbs and flows. Rachel is at a point in her career where she doesn't feel like she has the power or agency over her choices. As an actor, you have to be given the meaty roles to be able to showcase [what you can do] and work with the directors who can pull that out of you."

Can she relate to that? "Yes, I've had that feeling before, but now, I'm at a place where I'm producing things. I have a production company with Dakota [Lewellen Pictures, which they founded in 2020], and I do feel like I have more power over my choices," she says.

I first met and interviewed Fanning in 2022 and found her to be smart, funny, and extraordinarily down-to-earth. It's thrilling to report, particularly when she has enjoyed so much success since, that she is exactly the same today.

"Oh, there's Alex!" she exclaims suddenly, having clocked Alexander Skarsgård walking into the restaurant. We watch as he sits down and try to figure out who he's having lunch with. "We'll find out!" she teases. "You always see someone at the Chateau." See? Elle Fanning enjoys a celeb spotting as much as the rest of us.

It's the week before Thanksgiving when we meet, and both Sentimental Value and Predator: Badlands are in movie theaters, having been released the same weekend at the beginning of November. The seventh movie in the sci-fi blockbuster franchise directed by Dan Trachtenberg won't get the award recognition of Sentimental Value (which has been nominated for eight Golden Globes) despite grossing a record-breaking $80 million globally in its opening weekend.

As the star of these two wildly different features, Fanning is frustrated by the fact that genre films are typically overlooked for prestigious awards. "To me, a film is a film," she says. "That's also how I approach picking projects. I don't feel like there should be this bias. That I don't understand. I hope that people can recognize those films more. I think it's important that we do. It's like, What does it mean to be an 'Oscar film,' you know? I don't know."

Fanning was approached for the dual role of Thia, a Weyland-Yutani Corporation android, and Thia's sister Tessa in Predator: Badlands by Trachtenberg, who was looking for someone with comedic chops and had seen her in The Great. Fanning, who appears opposite rising star Dimitrius Schuster-Koloamatangi, does have some funny one-liners in the film, so between that and getting to play two characters for the price of one ("I'd never done the 'Parent Trap Lindsay Lohan' thing before," she notes), it was a no-brainer.

It's hard to believe Predator: Badlands is Fanning's first action film. "I definitely got a taste for it," she says, enthusiastically going into detail about how she was hooked up to the rigs. "I would like to go down that path and really train for months and months and months for something. That could be really fun."

"I come from an athletic background, and I grew up doing dance, and I'm a very physical person. I'm quite strong, like I've never known my own strength," she says with a laugh. Stronger than Dakota, who is four years older than her? "Yes, I think so," she says. "She's so small. She'll probably beg to differ on that!"

The only daughters of a professional tennis player and a minor-league baseball player, the Fannings were born in Georgia but relocated to Los Angeles when Dakota's acting career took off. It's been home ever since. Dakota now owns a property around the corner from where their mother and grandmother live. Elle moved into her own place last year when her forthcoming TV project, Margo's Got Money Troubles, started filming in the city.

In the Apple TV+ series adaptation that arrives April 15, Fanning plays the lead opposite Nicole Kidman. It's being executive-produced by Lewellen Pictures, and Fanning is currently in the edit, which she describes as her favorite process. "I kind of fell in love with it on The Great [on which she also served as executive producer]. It's a real art," she says. "People always say that as an actress [you should] get close to your editor because they have your performance in their hands! They can change the whole performance through editing. That fascinates me."

Already, 2026 is shaping up to be an even bigger year for Fanning, who also features in the forthcoming Hunger Games prequel, The Hunger Games: Sunrise on the Reaping, as a young Effie Trinket (played by Elizabeth Banks in the original trilogy).

This spring, she'll begin filming the highly anticipated movie adaptation of Kristin Hannah's best-selling World War II novel The Nightingale. The Fanning sisters will produce and, more importantly, star opposite one another for the very first time.

"How many times has everyone reported this?" quips Fanning. The project was due to start filming right before the pandemic and lay dormant for a few years. "It's finally, finally happening! It's a big moment, but I'm actually glad that it's happening now. I think Dakota and I are ready," she continues.

That first day on set is going to be pretty magical. "I'm really excited about that electric feeling we're gonna have," she beams. "Whatever scene we film together for the first time is going to be so charged. … I'm gonna cry! We've been acting for so long, and you can't create that feeling—the first time doing something—again. So yeah, I'll be nervous and very emotional."

The Fannings' acting careers have been completely separate up to this point—deliberately so. "I mean, we've never even run lines together," she points out. "I guess we'll have to now!"

They've never been in a situation where they've both wanted the same role? "We get different opportunities. Honestly, we don't even think we look alike. It's never happened that we've gone for the same thing," she says.

"People would ask us a lot when we were younger to do films together, but we wanted to make sure that we were figuring out who we both were individually first," she explains. "We're so supportive of each other. It's the best thing in my life that I have her as this role model and we were able to carve out our own paths."

The sisters' dynamic continues to evolve as they get older. "Dakota 100% was, and still is, very much my protector, but also, now [that] I'm older, I can protect her more. She can call me for advice," she says.

Fanning can pinpoint exactly when things shifted. "You know, I remember it was actually on my 16th birthday. I was invited to go with her friends to their house afterward. It was like, 'Oh my god, she's seeing me as a person, not just a sister,'" she says.

Sharing the screen might be unchartered territory, but behind the camera, the Fannings have developed a successful working relationship as producers. Founded in the pandemic, Lewellen Pictures (named after their late childhood dog) has quite a roster, ranging from comedy and drama for TV (The Great, Margo's Got Money Troubles) to film (The Nightingale) and documentary (Death in Apartment 603: What Happened to Ellen Greenberg?).

"Like in our acting careers, if it's something that we are gravitated toward and feel passionate about, then we're up for it," explains Fanning, who likes finding articles and books that could be turned into something à la Reese Witherspoon, whereas true crime is more Dakota's domain.

They famously bought the rights to Paris Hilton's memoir, although the project is some way off. "We want to do it justice because obviously there are so many stories about her out there," she says. "But Paris is very much involved, and I love her, and she's been an amazing partner, and I've got to go to her house, which is everything you want it to be!"

While both Fanning and her sister are able to spot the potential of something—"what audiences want to watch and what they are gonna enjoy"—they ultimately make a great team because Elle gets excited and passionate about ideas and Dakota is able to interpret them. "She's like, 'Okay, she's really trying to say this,'" laughs Fanning. "Dakota should have been a lawyer. She's incredibly intelligent and knows how to argue her case. It can be to your benefit or your detriment, at times, for sure. I've lost many arguments with her!"

Lately, Fanning's been working on trying to be more present. "I'm thinking about, you know, just everything in the future. I'm thinking about kids that haven't even been born!" she admits. "It's like, 'What am I doing? This is way too many steps ahead.'"

It's not the only thing that keeps her awake at night. "I have 121,000 photos on my phone. … Where are all these photos gonna go?" she adds.

Fanning has been in a relationship with Rolling Stone CEO Gus Wenner since late 2023. They made their red carpet debut at the Golden Globes in January 2024, and she is—surprisingly for someone of her celebrity status—very open and affectionate about him on Instagram.

"He's the best," she gushes. "We want to be a part of each other's lives and share these fun times and experiences together. … Why hide? The future looks bright."

"I definitely do want kids. I've always wanted kids. I've known that since I was little," she adds.

The couple currently divide their time between Fanning's rental home in L.A. and New York, where Wenner lives. Fanning is obsessed with old houses and loves looking at homes on the online architecture, history, and property magazine Francis York.

"We've been going on Zillow and looking at the Upper West and Upper East Side and the potential there [for a renovation project]," she says. "Isn't that everyone's dream, to restore a house? But it takes years, so yeah, I don't know. That's why I haven't done it yet!"

She has plenty of time, I remind her, and she is trying to be more present, after all. This probably explains why she hasn't thought as far as what she'll wear this award season—although she will inevitably come up with some "mad ideas" with her stylist of 14 years, Samantha McMillen.

In fact, Fanning hasn't thought much further than tonight. "I am doing nothing," she says with a relieved smile when we get the check and say our goodbyes. "The world's my oyster, so I'm probably going to watch TV shows in bed. I love On Brand With Jimmy Fallon. I've seen a lot of films this year, but listen, I'm not highbrow. I'll watch any competition reality show!"

Well, it's not every day you're promoting two wildly different movies, editing a TV show, prepping for your next big film, and then being arrested in your lingerie at a Sabrina Carpenter show. I'd say she's earned a night off, wouldn't you?

Right now, most people have the holidays on the brain, but Hollywood is looking a bit farther ahead. The 2026 award season kicks off immediately after the New Year, so early celebrations are already underway in the City of Angels. Last night, for instance, Coach threw a party in honor of global brand ambassador and Golden Globe nominee Elle Fanning. The soirée included a dinner and a screening of her film, Sentimental Value.

As a beauty editor, I know better than most how makeup artists often use drugstore products on their celebrity clientele, whether it's a flawless foundation, a glow-boosting highlighter, or something else entirely. (It's proof that drugstore products can and often do perform as well as their pricey counterparts.) So, when I hear of a makeup artist using one or two affordable items on an A-lister, I take note. When I hear of a makeup artist exclusively using affordable items on an A-lister, I lean in to learn more.

That's the case with celebrity makeup artist Erin Ayanian-Monroe and her client Elle Fanning. The latter recently attended the 2025 Golden Globes, wearing a beautiful custom Balmain couture dress and a sophisticated makeup look to match: dewy skin, defined eyes, and rosy lips. It looked expensive, but it was actually created entirely with products from one of the most iconic drugstore beauty brands, L'Oréal Paris.

The Look

Fanning is a brand ambassador for L'Oréal Paris, so I wasn't shocked to find out that Ayanian-Monroe used some of the brand's products on the big day. That said, I was surprised to find out that she exclusively used the brand's products because who doesn't want to re-create a red-carpet makeup look without spending an entire paycheck on new products? Ayanian-Monroe used two skin-prep products and 10 makeup products (all $17 or less!), amounting to 12 items in total.

In a press release, Ayanian-Monroe commented on the inspiration behind Fanning's look, saying she "took [a] cue from her glorious custom Balmain couture dress. We wanted some classic beauty with a modern sultry edge." I'd say they achieved that goal. Keep scrolling to see the exact products.

There are a lot of famous families in Hollywood, but none can compete—at least to us—with Elle and Dakota Fanning. We're rarely fortunate enough to see them together publicly, but when we do, it's always a viral moment. Tonight at the 82nd annual Golden Globe Awards, held at The Beverly Hilton, that's exactly what we got.

The elder of the two Fanning sisters, Dakota, is nominated in the Best Performance by a Female Actor in a Supporting Role on Television category for her performance in Ripley, and she certainly dressed for the carpet she'd be walking on. Her younger sister, who recently starred in the Bob Dylan biopic A Complete Unknown alongside Timothée Chalamet and Monica Barbara, came to support her. Like Dakota, Elle has worked with McMillen for years, and the two always come up with something perfect and high-octane for award shows like the Golden Globes. This year, the actress went with Balmain and Cartier, choosing a champagne-colored satin ball gown with a leopard-print bodice. We guess an affinity for statement trends—red on Dakota and animal print on Elle—runs in the family.

Bryce Scarlett (the celeb stylist behind the 'dos), you are truly a tress master. Each artfully crafted style just exudes elegance, and I cannot wait to copy them all this year. That said, as I am decidedly not a pro artist like Scarlett, I'll start with the easiest project of the bunch: a subtle, strategically tucked bobby pin. To be honest, I've never been a bobby pin type of gal. In fact, I'm one to steer clear of hairstyles that involve pins of any sort—just way too much precision for my shaky fingers. But all this one requires is a simple tuck of a face-framing section of hair. It not only secures hair away from your face but also makes you instantly look polished, especially if you pair it with a side part and old Hollywood updo like Depp.

It looks even more effortless if you use a pin that matches your exact shade of hair. Depp and Elle Fanning—who wore a humble bobby pin with her soft, side-parted lob at a London press event for A Complete Unknown—both sported dark blonde pins that become somewhat camouflaged into their strands. Depp's pin appears a tad wider than Fanning's, but both are quite humble in design, which makes each tuck appear even more sophisticated, as opposed to donning a crystal-bedecked barrette (which, to be fair, is also an easy way to elevate a hairstyle).

Loud, maximalist hair accessories are certainly having a moment in 2025, but there's something to be said for pairing high-glam, polished strands with an unassuming pin. The juxtaposition just oozes cool.

Elle Fanning is known for her elegant, sophisticated style—it's no wonder she's portrayed royals like Maleficent's Princess Aurora and Russian empress Catherine the Great—yet her sartorial choices also tend to include a wink of playfulness. Her beauty looks, she tells me, totally fit in with that aesthetic. "I love Grace Kelly. I love that classic look," the 26-year-old star says over Zoom as she preps for L'Oréal Paris's Women of Worth event. Think a sleek cat eye (which she wears now), fanned-out lashes, and a velvety-matte red lip. As for the extra touch of whimsy? Fanning loves blush—and lots of it. "I have blush blindness for sure," she laughs. "More, more, more—there can never be enough!"

For those who haven't yet come across the TikTok term, "blush blindness" refers to the inability to tell when your natural flush has become… a bit overkill. As the tidal wave of blush trends—"sunburn blush," "boyfriend blush," etc.—starts to settle, people are beginning to realize just how much rosy pigment they've really been applying.

Yet Fanning regrets nothing; in fact, she tells me blush is, hands down, her desert-island beauty grab. (To which I say: Same here!) "I like it over the bridge of the nose, that little sunburn look," she adds. "I love blush. I always have." Add a dusting of faux freckles to the equation, and you'll nail Fanning's glowy take on classic "Grace Kelly" glam. Below, discover the products she swears by for every step.

Of course, we have to start with blush. "I like a real peachy blush," Fanning says. "L'Oréal has some really great ones that have a shimmer in them as well. … Something that's more on the coral side I think works for me." I'd say Apricot Kiss is the perfect peach with a soft powder texture, or for more of a dewy shine, opt for the coral liquid number below.

"The Lumi lotion is something that I use a lot because I love a dewy look as opposed to matte," says Fanning. For what it's worth, WWW editors are also huge fans of that skin luminizer. It's a cult favorite for a reason!

When it comes to eye shadow, Fanning adores these easy-to-use shadow sticks. "[It's] good if you don't want to put [a lot of] eye shadow on. It's a nice contour to give [the lids] some definition."

"I love my nose," Fanning tells me when I ask her about her favorite feature to enhance. Usually people respond with the eyes, cheekbones, or brows—but honestly, I love her answer. That said, she isn't a huge fan of nose contour. "I have tried," she caveats. "It looks a little wrong on me."

Instead, she'll enhance her nose with a swipe of blush across the bridge (duh) and a smattering of faux freckles. "Years before it became a trend, my makeup artist and I would always add little freckles. We used an eyebrow pencil, and we would add them over the makeup looks. It gives you a youthful glow, and makes it not look like you're wearing so much foundation," she says.

In terms of the specific product she uses, any eyebrow pencil will do. "It's all about the color. Any brown pencil will work, but find the right shade that works for you," she shares. This $11 eyebrow pencil above comes in 10 shades, so it's a pretty safe bet.

Yes, Fanning loves her dewy looks, but that doesn't mean she forgoes setting powder. Say it with me: Powder is essential for balanced makeup looks! "I have realized the value in powder a little more than I used to. I mean, I was—and I still kind of am—anti-powder. But then there are times I'm like, 'Okay, you just look a little bit too shiny,'" she says. She compares it to hair spray—too much of it can make strands look stiff, but it can be necessary for an immaculate look. "Powder makes things really precise," she adds.

When it comes to classic "Grace Kelly" glamour, we of course can't forget about a bold red lip. Fanning specifically adores a matte finish for events, as it typically lasts longer than a glossy pout. "A big, glossy lip can look amazing, but that's a little hard for a night out. It kind of bleeds out. But a real matte, bright red is super fun and always looks good," she notes. "And then you don't need to do an eye—just the red lip and naked everywhere else I think looks good."

For this event, though, Fanning keeps her lips a neutral pink in favor of a sharp, elongated cat eye and rosy flush. She might call it "blush blindness," but I'd say it looks pretty damn angelic.

This season, there's one piece we're seeing on the best dressers among us—and a quintessential summer item curiously MIA in its wake. I'll start with the latter because this time of year typically brings out plenty of shorts ensembles, but lately, we can't help but notice a sharp decline in their appearances. Right now, celebrities and It girls are turning to none other than poplin maxi skirts. So far this season, we've spotted these airy, flowy skirts all over the map, from the trendiest cafés in L.A. to the most popular vacation spots throughout France and Italy.

Elle Fanning, Bella Hadid, Laura Harrier, and European It girls seem to agree that poplin skirts are the move right now. They're styling the skirts with everything from flip-flops to cowboy boots and ballet flats to point-toe pumps, proving that they are not only chic, classic, and practical for the heat but also wildly versatile for a number of occasions and style preferences. I've noticed that there are several celebrity fans of this pretty skirt trend, with Elle Fanning adding herself to the list this week. While walking down an NYC street a few days ago, Fanning put the perfect summer outfit on display. And her skirt-and-shoe combination, in particular, is sure to be popular in the coming months.

For her travels (she was pulling a suitcase, so one can assume), Fanning wore a striped tank bodysuit with a white midi skirt from Dôen, and simple rubber flip-flops from The Row. This season's publicly accepted shoe trends run the gamut from mesh flats to grandma pumps (or as I elegantly refer to them, court shoes), meaning that it would take a lot for people to be shocked by a footwear fad that enters onto the scene. We're out here wearing leopard-print sneakers, patent-leather sock boots, and bright-green satin slippers on any normal day—it's not like things are exactly casual. And yet, I have a pretty good feeling that the shoe trend I just spotted Elle Fanning wearing in a photo will take some by surprise, not to mention probably spark a controversy or two.

The shoes in question—which the actress wore with dark-wash cuffed jeans, a white button-down shirt worn open with a camisole underneath, and a Bottega Veneta crossbody bag while shopping around SoHo in New York City—came straight off of the runway at Miu Miu's S/S 24 show. You may have owned something similar during your summer camp days, as the style I'm referring to is a rope sandal with a thong toe and slingback closure made entirely of colorful cord. Though Fanning chose the red pair, Miu Miu also offers the sandals in brown and black.

In addition to the kitschy, throwback nature of the shoe style, the way these particular sandals put your otherwise bare feet so close to the sidewalk is extremely controversial, especially in a city like New York. Many people swore off any flip-flop-adjacent footwear options years ago and will shamelessly call you out if they see you trying to bring them back. With every new season comes a new flat-shoe trend (typically), and I'm placing my bets on one that Prada and Miu Miu are majorly endorsing for S/S 24. It's been a minute since two of the biggest flat shoe trends of the 2020s appeared (those being ballet flats and loafers), so I think it's time to freshen things up. And the new trend Elle Fanning and soon-to-be many others is freshening things up with is moccasins.

While out walking in NYC this week, Fanning wore a casually elegant outfit consisting of a cardigan, white T-shirt, and loose trousers. On her feet was a pair of Prada suede leather driving shoes, which is a descendant of the mocassin (as are loafers, in fact). Mocassins were invented by the Native American community and date back to the 1800s. The shoe style has evolved over the years and comes back around occasionally. And now that Prada and Miu Miu have featured the style so heavily in the S/S 24 collections, I think this will be one of those come-back-around times. If you thought Elle Fanning's costumes on The Great were good, just wait until you see her most recent red carpet appearance. Earlier this year, when wearing a mask became a new necessity in this country, the predicament I most often faced when wearing one was what to do with it when I took it off when running errands and whatnot. A few months later, I discovered a solution, and I see that Elle Fanning has too.

Because let’s be real—we’ve been spending a copious amount of time with stylish television characters, have fallen in love with the costume designers behind breakout shows like Normal People, and have comfort in rewatching ’90s television shows, so why wouldn’t our Halloween costumes be inspired by them this year? Not only are these ideas versatile enough to be worn for binge-watching at home or socially distanced gatherings, but they can also include pieces we already own so that we’re not spending extra money on a pair of wings we wear once.

If you’re looking for a bit of a more traditional Halloween costume idea, then look no further than the classic late ’90s television show Buffy The Vampire Slayer (now streaming on Hulu). Not only is this show perfect for binge-watching to get you in the Halloween spirit, but Buffy’s style also still slays to this day. Chokers and corsets? As an avid Witherspoon fan, I spent days arguing with friends over texts about the characters and who was "right,” but what’s not debatable is the fact that Elena is one stylish antagonist. With her classic approach to ’90s businesswoman style featuring tweed coats and button-ups and wrap dresses, this is a character that makes for an easy Halloween costume.

WHO: Arabella

WHAT:  Jeans, a T-shirt, and an interesting bomber jacket

Possibly one of the most talked-about shows of the year (for good reason) is HBO’s original series I May Destroy You is a must-watch for anyone who hasn’t gotten around to it yet. Directed, written, and starring Michael Coel, the show explored topics that can be scary (not Michael Cougar scary but based in real trauma) resulting in a show that will rock you to your core. Just take a cue from Arabella’s own last-minute Halloween costume and opt for a little black dress you already own with spooky accessories.

There are still so many outfits from Sex and the City that are seared into my brain. After all, who could forget the summer Carrie Bradshaw wore that infamous tube top and a cowboy hat?
