Contrary to popular belief, trends don’t just come into existence out of nowhere. They’re conjured up months in advance of when you actually see them cropping up on the streets and in stores, decided upon based on shopping insights, consumer data, media engagement and the magic that is a designer’s intuition. Or, at least that is my own experience after spying them in the flesh on a whim in a scenario that feels ripped right from the pages of a Richard Curtis screenplay. Indeed, during a winter’s stroll in central London, I wandered into Selfridges' luxury floor and came face-to-face with a shoe trend that truly took my breath away. It was something right out of Love Actually, but instead of Emma Thompson’s mindless perusal through the boutique racks, I found myself staring down a pair of satin Miu Miu trainers hidden away inside the iconic department store.

It felt kismet, like everything I had ever done had led me to discover this secret gem. So, you can only imagine my surprise when I suddenly saw the same pair crop again on the feet of a stylish content creator the next day when I was aimlessly scrolling through Instagram. And again, when I was perusing the new in section of leading online fashion stores like MyTheresa and Farfetch.

Now, I don’t usually believe in love at first sight, especially when sartorial affairs of the heart were concerned, but the act of seeing these sumptuous satin trainers in quick succession after never noticing them previously felt like no coincidence.

Was this the admiration people talk about when they feel like they’ve found a forever piece? I’m usually one to be more pragmatic with my investments, deciding to bite the bullet and purchase something only after I’ve undergone the tedious mental arithmetic of working out the cost per wear and the precise number of pieces they could be paired with. But as a fashion writer who has made their passion for shopping and love for identifying covetable and nascent styles, you can surely sympathise with how besotted I became with the style.

It’s a desire that my chic colleagues can attest to, after rushing back to my desk to share my eureka moment and proclaim that this exact fabric and shoe shape would soon be everywhere. Which brings us here; explaining to you, dear reader, not only my logic, but the rationale for why satin trainers are the latest shoe trends to back.

Of course, part of this harks back to what I was saying about trusting someone’s gut instincts. As someone who has worked in the industry for over half a decade, it takes a lot for me to feel genuinely excited about something bubbling up on the horizon. This is especially as I know what it takes to manufacture a trend, with celebrity endorsements often paid for and never an accident.

And when it comes to trainers, I hate to say it, but I’ve always found the practical silhouette somewhat dull as a category. I can admire how sneakers have become a fashion staple in their own right. Still, I’d much rather covet something more charming or beautiful. Therein lies part of the appeal of satin trainers. Whilst retro, low-profile and technical iterations have reigned supreme in recent months, this style feels like the antithesis of the functional versions that serve as prototypes for the genre. They’ll still provide orthopaedic support and enable you to clock in thousands of steps, but the delicate satin finish offers a darling and saccharine element that sets them apart from their competitors.

Who else but Miuccia Prada to show this best? As a stringent acolyte of hers, it doesn’t take a lot to convince me that her subversive and intellectual approach to fashion is superior. In fact, on a recent trip to Florence, I resolved to spend a day at the Prada outlet instead of exploring the Tuscan city’s rich art galleries and cathedrals, imagining the sprawling discounted store as my own personal wardrobe to shop from.

For the uninitiated, Mrs. Prada is truly one of the most cerebral creative directors working today, meaning that everything she produces to be incredibly considered, pondered over and refined. Offering up a pair of satin trainers is by no means an accident, but a thoughtful successor to Miu Miu’s viral satin ballet flats that debuted on the brand’s autumn/winter 2022 collection all those years ago.

Again, I say this to stress the point that there is no twist of fate when it comes to style, as at the same time Miu Miu was gearing up for the style’s release, Prada was also offering its own version of the trend on its orange-coated spring/summer 2026 runway. Alongside utilitarian silhouettes that distilled the brand’s more artistic side into a palatable look at conservative fashion and purposeful clothing, the legendary Milanese designer was offsetting these restrictive totes with darling sneakers that offered a lightness and elegance.

Another view is that satin, after a period where suede and leather dominated, was just the next logical material to utilise and make popular. Sure, there’s that too, but I’d rather take a kinder look at the trend and argue it injects an ethereal and glamorous element into ensembles during a time where dressing feels entirely ascetic. With this trend, we need not compromise on comfort for the sake of wearing something beautiful. Our austere uniform of funnel-neck jackets and straight-leg jeans can remain; it’s just about swapping out a stiffer shoe for something soft and polished.

Researching this piece, I’ve already noticed quite a lot of brands take up this mantle, with Dries Van Noten producing airy and glossy iterations of its viral trainer, to Grace Wales Bonner embracing this smooth texture in her latest collaboration with Adidas. Call it what you want, but there is no denying that satin trainers are on the precipice of having a big moment. Intrigued to follow suit? On the second day of Paris Fashion Week, Julian Klausner presented his sophomore womenswear collection for Dries Van Noten, the Belgian label he inherited from designer Dries Van Noten in December 2024, at the Palais de Tokyo. While the designer is new to the helm, he isn't a fresh face at the company. Rather, Klausner has worked under the leadership of Van Noten for six years, so it hasn't been all that surprising seeing how easily he's transitioned into his new role as creative director. He kicked things off with lauded womenswear and menswear debuts, and now, he's following up with another well-received ready-to-wear curation for the season ahead.

For spring/summer 2026, Klausner continued the house's streak of designing opulent, craft-focused pieces for fashion people who get it, but instead of the dark, moody colors he chose for fall/winter 2025, he opted for a far more vibrant and in-your-face palette. Think hot pink, cerulean, orange, red, and chartreuse—all of which were paired in unexpected, almost shocking ways. Colors weren't the only clashing aspect of the collection, either. Mismatching patterns were also combined in mysterious ways that somehow worked despite what fashion's oldest (and most outdated) rules would have you think. Intricate jacquard patterns were combined with bright, beaded skirts, and psychedelic polka dots were worn alongside jackets adorned with hand-beaded collages.

A sense of lightheartedness was present throughout, and it was like the clothes were designed for a wild party scene in The Great. Everything was grand and gorgeous as well as fun, a welcome reminder after years of minimalism dominating the trend landscape. "My first idea for this collection ... was to convey a sense of ease and optimism," Klausner said in the show notes. It resonated.

2026's It Sneakers

For spring/summer 2026, Klausner kept up Dries Van Noten's current run of form in the sneaker department, where the brand is leading the charge in the low-profile movement. (Say goodbye to chunky runners.) Alongside grand apparel, most of the models at the show donned slim sneaker styles that will, no doubt, become the season's It buys. Some were more pared back in shades of red and blue leather, and others felt more like a continuation of their models' exuberant ensembles, such as pairs made of turquoise-and-purple printed satin and styles featuring hand-placed baubles. We'll have to wait to see what they look like once they're put into production, but given the brand's legacy of selling fun and experimental fashions, I can't imagine they'll end up being anything short of playful perfection.

Clashing Is Cool

"The energy, while working, was playful as we experimented with scale, color, and shapes, balancing hard and soft, still and fluid, casual and refined, simple and complex—bringing things together into a joyful mix of unfiltered intuitiveness," Klausner said about his Dries Van Noten S/S 26 collection titled Wavelength. The result? A bevy of looks that clashed in a cool way, from colors that aren't supposed to go together to patterns that don't match. It wasn't tame or designed for the faint of heart. Instead, the collection was an explosion of positive energy. Two wrongs make a right, and everything about what Klausner combined at the Palais de Tokyo on Tuesday was right.

Modern Opulence

Last season's Dries Van Noten show was all very grandiose and old-world, from the clothes to the location (the Palais Garnier, an opera house that opened in 1875 in the 9th arrondissement in Paris). This season, Klausner maintained the same level of lavishness while adding modernity throughout the collection. "The regal attitude of surfers on the board is translated into a hint of historical grandeur, offset by the organic everydayness of grey jersey." he wrote in the press release. Whereas true clothing of the past would be uncomfortable and impractical, the pieces that debuted on the runway felt wearable with all the grandeur embellishments and art-like shape of a genuine vintage design. "A dialogue of opposites: bold but easy, stiff and floaty," the release stated.

Return of the Statement Necklace

I, for one, never expected the statement necklace (I'm talking about the thick, collar-like kind that was popular in the mid-2010s) to make any sort of serious comeback in fashion, but I'll admit that I was wrong. If anyone could do it, it's Klausner, who added the once-dated neck accoutrements to many of the models walking in this season's Dries Van Noten show. From anyone else, I probably would have hated it, but from him, it was a stylish addition, one that will surely inspire other brands to follow suit. Goodbye, tennis necklaces and barely-there jewelry. Things will soon be chunkier and bolder than ever.

Some shows during Paris Fashion Week are stocked full of celebrity guests, but at Dries Van Noten, it was all classic fashion people from every stylish city on the map. My go-to shoe for a fair few years, I like to think of myself as somewhat of a trainer aficionado who can keenly spot a trending style on the horizon, which I'd always choose over the equivalent loafers or ballet flats.

Of course, not all trainers are built the same and can claim the coveted title of one of the pairs of the season. From timeless white trainers to buzzy drops like the New Balance X Miu Miu collab, which is undoubtedly one of the most sought-after designer trainer collections to date, there are a few telltale signs which signal when a style is destined to be a sellout. Firstly, they seamlessly slot into a capsule wardrobe, providing outfit versatility and styling ease (essentially, you can wear them again and again and they'll still feel elevated).

Secondly, you'll spot them on those in the know. With so many trending options around, there are actually few which seem to unify fashion people and celebrities alike, so when they do, you know you're on the right track. My Review: With a retro '70s mood sweeping the trending trainer scene, slimeline styles featuring skinny soles and rounded toes can feel like a dime a dozen, but Dries Van Noten's Leather-Trimmed Sneakers stand miles above the rest. Quietly drawing Kendall Jenner and Hailey Bieber as fans, these trainers feature clean lines, a supple suede finish (unless you go for the leather and fabric iteration) and a complementary two-tone colour palette, offering all the ease of a classic trainer with a fresh 2025 twist. I've noticed them taking the place of Adidas Sambas in the outfits of chic Instagram users, so trying them was a must.

Fitting like a glove, their no-fuss design instantly elevates anything they're worn with. Much to my dismay (as I was desperately hoping these wouldn't be as good IRL as they looked online, owing to the more premium price tag), they lived up to their hype. The flat sole offers little cushioning, but that's part of their beauty—they almost mould to your feet. This gives them another draw I constantly look for when on the hunt for trainers: they make your feet look dainty. Now, anyone with large feet will understand this struggle. Most trainers, from chunky to flat-soled pairs, tend to exaggerate my shoe size, but these? They do the opposite; their slimline, sculptural build gives the illusion of petite feet without sacrificing their trending edge.

Whether you go for the classic tan suede colourway to the best-selling Bordeaux leather-and-fabric style—both key autumn 2025 colour trends—you'll have the perfect subtle pop of colour to balance your casual autumn outfits with a laid-back edge, rather than have your trainers make the whole look feel dishevelled and unpolished.

To put them to the test, I tried the suede pair with a fail-safe autumn capsule-wardrobe combination: light denim jeans, a thick, chunky knit and a khaki trench coat, and they looked every bit as polished as I was hoping they would. I styled the Bordeaux variation with the best-selling Dries funnel-neck jacket over the same jeans and knit. With its balloon sleeves, high collar and cotton-wool blend, it's both relaxed and structured, with a great weight that makes it perfect for layering. Chic, wearable and fashion-forward, these are definitely a pair I’d say are worth your time and money.

2. COS Minimal Leather Trainers

My Review: Now that we’re on the same page that slimline trainers are back, it would be remiss of me not to mention COS's minimal leather trainers. Spotted on influencer Lucy Williams at the brand's spring/summer 2025 show in Athens, there was a distinct buzz in the Who What Wear UK office when these designer-looking trainers hit shelves. Now, I know what you’re thinking: high-street trainers? But hear me out. Known for their high-quality craftspersonship and ahead-of-the-trend designs, COS does trainers better than its competitors, in my humble opinion. Made from a 100% suede shell and soft leather lining, these honestly aren't too dissimilar in style from the aforementioned Dries Van Noten style. Instead of a round toe, though, they have a slightly square shape, along with a thicker, ridged rubber sole and leather-accent trims. To me, they're like a hybrid between the Nike Cortez vintage running design and the motorsport silhouette of the new Adidas Taekwondo, resulting in a minimalistic trainer that's truly wearable.

Again, I tried true to size and was pleasantly surprised. They felt snug with thick socks but not too tight (and remember, leather trainers naturally soften and give). Each colourway is contemporary without being overtly trendy or trying too hard. The pony-hair pair in particular looks so luxe IRL, and is an easy way to dip into one of autumn's biggest shoe trends. However, the suede style left me slightly disappointed. A pair taken from the shop floor, I couldn't help but notice the discolouration in the black suede. Likely a result of repeated try-ons, there were paler spots where the shoes had seemingly rubbed against each other or another item of clothing, causing the dye to fade somewhat. This is the beauty of try-ons, though; I can truly test out an item for you before you buy, and had I purchased sight unseen, I wouldn't have been best pleased about this.

To give the trainers a proper road-test, I styled them with some of COS's key pieces for autumn: the Sculpted Merino Wool Jacket and the gloriously soft Brushed Cashmere Cardigan, both of which surpassed my expectations. The jacket is lightweight and fluid, a perfect transitional piece crafted from 100% wool, whilst the cardigan, which I've tried on before, was every bit as soft as I remembered. All in all, these trainers are perfect for those looking for a pared-back, easy-to-style shoe with a high-end feel that won't break the bank.

3. Onitsuka Tiger Mexico 66

My Review: When I saw our senior shopping editor, Marina Avraam, rocking a pair of Onitsuka Tiger Mexico 66 trainers a few weeks ago, I was reminded just how great they are. Thin-soled and available in bright colours, the Mexico 66 features crossover stripes with an aesthetic reminiscent of Adidas Samba and Gazelle, just not as mainstream. Finding fans from fashion people to supermodels (Bella Hadid, here's looking at you), the popular neon yellow colourway was originally worn by Uma Thurman with her iconic yellow-and-black two-piece from Kill Bill Volume 1, which was released in 2003.

Since then, these trainers have filtered into mainstream, in an ever-expanding array of colourways that now includes a particularly bold silver style. This everywhere-but-somehow-also-under-the-radar trainer is constantly being worn by the coolest of fashion people, but I had yet to try it myself, so this was the perfect opportunity to put it to the test. I took my normal size in both pairs I tried (yellow and silver), and was genuinely surprised when they were a good fit. The silhouette looks deceptively narrow, so I tried them with my thickest socks, yet they were comfortable through and through.

Made from 100% cow leather, they’re smooth to the touch and glide onto the feet with ease. There's a definite throw-on-and-go energy to them, and each colour variant brings something a little different. Whether you're looking for a bold, contrasting shade or subtle minimalism, you’ll find a pair to match your vibe. Personally, for their wearability, wide range of colourways and cool-girl edge, I think these are some of the trendiest trainers to own, which is exactly why they made my list.

4. Puma Speedcat Ballet Sneakers

My Review: Now, I need to preface this by saying that I am not a fan of the Puma Speedcat Ballet Sneakers, and thus won't be subscribing to the "sneakerina" trend. From Iris Law to Dua Lipa, fashion's It girls have been gravitating towards this ballet flat-trainer hybrid for a romantically cool edge for some time now. With a low-profile design complete with several straps that bind the shoe to the foot, these ballet trainers offer all the comfort of a trainer (thanks to the rubber sole) whilst retaining a delicate aesthetic only ballet flats can achieve.

Because of my initial scepticism, I put these trainers to the test—hard. And as I sit here typing this, I have to eat my words. Surprisingly, they delivered, and my mind might be changed. The rubber sole makes them super-comfortable, especially if you’re someone who racks up 10,000 steps a day like me. The straps hold your feet in place, and the cut is just high enough that there's no toe cleavage on show (which is my preference). I stayed true to size, and the fit was spot on.

Adding a playful finish to the everyday blue jeans I was wearing when I tried them on, they added an IYKYK feel to my casual 'fit. Upon leaving the store, I suddenly found myself surrounded by a multitude of fashion people who had added delicate ballet satins and a plethora of charms to make them more individual. All in all, I have to admit that these trainers have all the makings of a trending style worth investing in if you're after something different, especially for those on-the-go looks that trainers do best.

5. Salomon XT 6 GTX

My Review: It's not just retro flat soles making a strong comeback in the trainers sphere; chunky white sneakers are still very cool. But having moved on from the era of maximalist Balenciaga "dad" trainers, the coolest fashion people are now gravitating towards the Salomon XT 6 GTX. Depending on your taste, you might be thinking, "Surely not?", but thanks in part to Rihanna's co-sign, these ultra-functional trainers have gained serious traction—pun intended.

I've spotted these sneakers everywhere, from workout classes to being styled with jeans, and our very own Who What Wear UK social media editor, Megan Storey, wears them religiously, so naturally, I needed to see what the hype was about. When Dries Van Noten announced he was retiring in June of last year, the fashion world was understandably both surprised and devastated. Through almost 40 years (and many ups and downs within the industry and the world) at the helm of his namesake brand, Van Noten never wavered in his pursuit of genuine authenticity and raw creativity. He drew up trends instead of following them and kept fashion feeling fun and experimental, collection after collection.

Fortunately for fans of the brand, Van Noten's successor comes from inside the business, having spent six years at the Belgian label learning from its founder. Julian Klausner was named its new creative director in December, and on Wednesday, in front of an intimate group of Paris Fashion Week attendees, he debuted his first collection. Hint: People liked it.

Changing Spaces

One of the biggest immediate contrasts between old Dries Van Noten and new Dries Van Noten was the look of its show venue. In the past, runway shows have taken place in raw, industrial spaces, where the clothes were the clear centerpieces in the room. Klausner, however, chose a much more lavish locale, welcoming his guests to the Palais Garnier, an opera house that opened in 1875 in the 9th arrondissement in Paris. The space is lavish inside and out, with large chandeliers lighting the runway and ornate paintings and architectural features everywhere the eye can see. "The collection was created with the venue in mind," Klausner wrote in a press release. "I imagined women passing through the opera, grabbing fabrics and objects, tying them with a shoelace while on a quest to find the answer to an unknown question. Behind the curtain, where creation and practice happen."

Craft Remains Paramount

Craft and attention to detail have always been codes of the Dries Van Noten brand, and they're not leaving anytime soon. In a recent interview with I-D, Klausner told Steff Yotka that he, of course, wants to keep things, from the textures to the colors to the prints. "The craft … we've built amazing relationships with a lot of suppliers and craftsmen," he said. "That is what I want to continue working on." In the collection, this intention can be seen in the form of multicolored tassel-embellished garments that were no doubt sewn on by hand. Tops made only of string and mismatching beads were styled underneath tailored suits, while dresses covered in large paillettes required little in the way of accessories to appear complete.

Round Toe's Renaissance

For years now, pointed-toe shoes have reigned supreme, leaving no room at the top for any other shape. Then, in 2024, we saw almond shapes ease their way in, followed by some square-toe options, and finally, full-on rounded toes. If you're not a fan, well, that's too bad, because the toe shape was all that was shown in Klausner's debut, and with the style growing more and more popular with all the top brands, it's time to face the music. Pointless toes are here to stay, and I for one, can't wait.

Opulence! Opulence! Opulence!

Last September's shows marked the beginning of the end for quiet luxury, ushering in a new, opulent, and maximalist aesthetic that's set to define the second half of the 2020s. This Dries Van Noten collection only acted as further proof that our predictions about the future of loud luxury were spot on. Clashing jacquard prints, jewel tones, and exaggerated silhouettes, combined with the Palais Garnier show venue, made for a rich (and expensive) treat for the senses.

Unlike the womenswear shows that can sometimes feel impossible to avoid on social media, if you don't actively pay attention to or cover menswear, you might not have even known that the fall/winter 2024 shows just ended—apart from Loewe, where all the "baby girls" plus Taylor Russell played dress-up in high-waisted corduroys, fuzzy suede boots, and sparkly blazers. That's where I come in. Even if you weren't watching every livestreamed show as they took place like I was, you'd want to know the trends that debuted there and steal them. 

From rugged work coats at Louis Vuitton and Prada (you might remember their lauded appearance in the spring/summer 2024 womenswear collection) to fashion-friendly, undeniably chic groutfits seen at Valentino and Sabato De Sarno's first menswear show for Gucci, the eight trends ahead include a little bit of everything cool right now in fashion. Scroll down to meet them all.

Ever since Prada debuted its S/S 24 collection that featured a delicate mixture of ghostly frocks, flowing fringe skirts, and rugged chore jackets, the fashion world has been enamored with any outerwear that's made of waxy cotton or canvas and features a corduroy collar. The trend isn't going to end when summer does. Miuccia Prada and Raf Simons as well as Pharrell Williams at Louis Vuitton and Kim Jones at Dior are all making it crystal clear in their fall/winter 2024 collections that workwear in the form of chore and country coats will reign for the entirety of the year.

Your social media feed might not have been inundated with menswear content last week, but mine was, and a majority of it was tied to the many glove moments from the shows in both Milan and Paris. Specifically, Gucci's burgundy and bright-green gloves that strategically matched each model's oversize Jackie bags were a fan favorite—as were the elbow-length leather styles seen at Dries Van Noten, a trend that's very much spreading on the womenswear side of things as well.

Just like the sky outside this winter, gray was impossible to miss on the menswear runways this season. Highlights include the heavy gray��hoodie styled alongside charcoal trousers and a tie-clad button-down shirt at Valentino and the single-breasted fuzzy coat at Gucci that was paired with a matching skinny necktie, gloves, a bag, and trousers. In other words, the groutfit is here, and it looks damn good—no sweatpants in sight.

If you're on the hunt for a new jewelry trend that doesn't yet feel overdone, look no further than the growing brooch fad, which is perfect for making your oversize, outfit-covering coats feel stylized and interesting during the colder months of the year. Though brands like Loewe, Saint Laurent, and Gucci are already dabbling in the brooch game, my favorite destination for lapel adornments is the vintage market, where there's a seemingly endless supply of baubles for you to choose from.

I know, I know—wearing corduroys for fall isn't exactly a groundbreaking phenomenon, but after finding the wide-wale, split-hem versions at Fendi, every other pair ever made in the autumnal fabric flew out the window. Then more arrived at S.S.Daley and Neil Barrett, and just like that, I knew that a new, very chic dawn was on the horizon for the formerly slept-on pant trend. I, for one, can't wait.

If you love the idea of a turtleneck sweater but hate how constricting it tends to feel whenever you step foot inside a heated office, restaurant, or home after being out in the cold, this knitwear trend is going to solve all of your fashion problems. Found at Hermès, Wales Bonner, Gucci, and Todd Snyder were oversize and spread-out collars, some of which can zip or button up to become a turtleneck with none of the restrictive qualities.

Canadian tuxedos rarely get the attention they deserve when they're styled on the streets, but they really don't on the runways, where either far more formal or out-there ensembles take precedence over casual ones like double denim. But not this season. From Louis Vuitton's Western-inspired take to Dries Van Noten's denim double-breasted suit, jeans were styled from head to toe all across the fall collections, finally getting a stage worthy of their glory.

Sometimes, the least flashy pieces are the most interesting ones, especially when it comes to menswear. Nowhere was this idea presented more clearly than in the suits shown on the fall/winter 2024 runways. For the latest episode of the Who What Wear podcast, Editor in Chief Kat Collings sat down with editor Eliza Huber and associate editor Yusra Siddiqui to chat all things gift giving. In the episode, our editors share their favorite low-cost gifts they're giving to their friends and family this holiday season.

I think we should start with a gift category that's pretty universal to anyone you might be gifting, gifts that pour back into yourself, help relaxation, and promote loving up on yourself. What are your top picks for giving the gift of chill?

Eliza Huber: I have one. It's called a Gua-Shroom. It's like a gua sha shaped like a mushroom. Immediately when I saw it, I was like, "I have to put this in this gift guide. It's so cute." It actually is derived from traditional Chinese medicine and designed to encourage lymphatic drainage. [It] can help to offset those results that come from partying over the holidays.

EH: I personally am really excited to try this six-piece soap set. They're egg-white facial soaps. I totally stumbled upon these during this research, and they look incredible, and the reviews are absolutely wild. They're made in Belgium and have been used for centuries. It's a really gentle alternative to intensive skincare products if you want something simple or have sensitive skin. They're by a brand called Kalastyle, and it's basically just really simple bar soap made with chamomile, and you replace your normal face soap with it.

Yusra Siddiqui: I have something that I really love: these Sandy Liang socks. I know everyone's like, "Robes are a boring gift. Socks are a boring gift." If you find a special enough pair of socks, I think that's such a special gift because when I'm buying socks, I feel like I'm just running to Target or H&M and getting simple socks. A special pair of socks is a small sartorial delight that adds something to an outfit. Even when you're lounging at home, I would love to be wearing a pair of Sandy Liang socks.

Let's move on to the next category that we're calling Custom Job—aka personalized custom items. I feel like it shows you put in that extra effort for the gift. I'm curious what your favorite picks were in this category.

YS: This is my personal favorite category. It just makes them feel extra special, the time and effort that goes into it. You can get creative, whether it's putting their name on it or initials [or] a unique quote that they say that's an inside joke. Out of the options we put, I've actually gifted the Papier recipe book, which you can customize the text.

Kat Collings: My favorite in this category is customizable matchbooks. I think people are into doing these for weddings. I'm also into the idea [of] just [doing] it as a gift for your home. It's kind of like merch for your house. 

Let's move on to the Little Luxuries category, gifts that feel luxurious but won't hit your wallet like one. What affordable options do some of our favorite higher-end brands have to offer?

EH: One of my guilty pleasures is just scanning luxury-brand websites and trying to find the cheapest things and seeing what they are. Obviously, a lot of them have beauty brands, which can make this easy. You could get a nail polish or a lipstick, and that's one great option. Some have nonstandard items that are so interesting and different, maybe things that you wouldn't expect to find at the corners of Hermès or Louis Vuitton. I'm personally really into this Dries Van Noten refillable lipstick case that we found for $38. The designs are all inspired by different Dries [Van Noten] fashion collections and runway collections and are super unexpected.

EH: There's also a really fun $35 Hermès pop-up book that we found that features all of the iconic scarf drawings, but in 3D. It's perfect for putting on your coffee table for decoration because it is that iconic Hermès orange.

Costume designer Stacey Battat knows that every project always starts with a mood board. Her latest is no exception.

Battat worked with longtime collaborator Sofia Coppola on her recently released film, Priscilla, in which Battat used fashion to help tell the story of Priscilla Presley.

"She [Coppola] usually puts together some sort of mood board,” Battat said. "From there, I think I put together my own mood boards, or we start to talk about colors—because a lot of the colors in that movie are based on what were the actual colors of the ’60s—and then how to integrate our color palette with those things.”

Battat and Coppola have worked together for years, including on projects such as The Bling Ring and The Beguiled.

I know that this isn't the first time that you've worked with director Sofia Coppola. I'm wondering if you can talk a little bit about how she initially approached you with this concept and if that's different from how you've worked together in the past?

Originally, there was another project that was kind of on the horizon. Then it started domino-effecting post-pandemic.

At some point, she said, "I think I'm going to put it aside.” I'd been working on the Priscilla project, and then she sent the script, and I read it, which is normally the way we do things.

She [Coppola] usually puts together some sort of mood board. From there, I think I put together my own mood boards, or we start to talk about colors—because a lot of the colors in that movie are based on what they actually wore, what were the actual colors of the ’60s—and then how to integrate our color palette with those things.

When you think about a mood board, are you focusing on era? Are you looking at the entirety of it? What does that look like?

All of it. I think first, colors are important. From there with Priscilla, there's also some other aspects. We're also trying to create a transitional wardrobe for her that ages her to a certain extent.

Then there's the period-appropriate aspect. With Priscilla, I think it was just super important to just have her in younger-looking silhouettes in the '50s—and some of that is adapted.

There's photos of her in a dress with big buttons, but it has kind of a slimmer skirt, and we made the skirt bigger so that it kept within that childish silhouette of the early part.

As we move through, there's kind of slimmer silhouettes, then '60s shifts, and then when she's really kind of finding herself, more pants.

As you mentioned, you did so much work looking at archives, looking at what has been worn. I'm wondering about how that collaboration between you and Sofia [Coppola] worked? Are there parts of the stories that had to be tweaked to show some of those moments? Or is it that the big plot points coincide with some of these iconic fashion moments organically?

They are a big part of the story, I would say, and were never added in to show them.

I feel like when he [Elvis Presley] leaves Germany in our story, it's the very first time she's seeing him as a public figure.

I mean, obviously, she knows he's a public figure, but their relationship up until that point is very intimate.

Then she waves goodbye, and it's like, now all of a sudden, he belongs to the world again. That, I think, was a very important story part.

Obviously, the wedding is important. The baby is important.

The last one, that family portrait, I think is so important, because to me, that photo was really indicative of how they grew apart.

He becomes so much more elaborate with the sideburns and the jewelry. She becomes so much more pared down with less makeup and a more natural silhouette and the hair and all of it.

To me, I saw that photo, and I thought, that's a visual understanding of how they split apart.

Nikki Ogunnaike never had a particular position in her career that she was working toward. After graduating college in 2007, Ogunnaike knew that she liked to write and loved fashion but thought that she'd be a market director for the rest of her career. "That's sort of what I imagined," Ogunnaike said. "I was like, 'I'm gonna be a market director by the time I'm 30, and then I'm gonna be there forever.'"

The internet changed that. As bloggers were becoming a more prominent force in the fashion industry, Ogunnaike decided that she wanted to go after a digital job and landed a role at Glamour. As they say, the rest is history. Since then, Ogunnaike has gone on to hold positions at Harper's Bazaar, Elle.com, and GQ, just to name a few. In August 2023, Ogunnaike started a new role as editor in chief at Marie Claire.

For this episode of Who What Wear With Hillary Kerr, Ogunnaike sits down with our editor in chief, Kat Collings, to share how her career has evolved, how she's developed her personal style, and more.

How has your transition been so far? Are you still in the learning-and-listening phase would you say?

I mean, definitely. I think I'm going to be in a learning-and-listening phase at least for the next two years, honestly. I sort of have this game plan, and my inclination is to want to get everything done at once, but I just got here. It's only been two months.

Not everything has to change—or needs to change or should change. I just want to be cognizant of not rushing everything at once.

Your previous role was as senior digital director at Harper's Bazaar, but your résumé is long and impressive. I've admired your career from afar for a long time, and I'm hoping you can tell me a bit about your trajectory and your aspirations. Was it the editor in chief position that you were always working toward?

I don't think in my career I've actually ever been working toward one position. I graduated from college in 2007, and my dream was to work in fashion. At that time, I knew I liked to write, and I knew I liked fashion. The only sort of fashion job I knew or understood after all of my internships was a market director.

A market director is the person who helps logistically when it comes to getting photo shoots together and working with stylists. That's what I imagined. I was like, "I'm gonna be a market director by the time I'm 30, and then I'm gonna be there forever."

Then, I was working at InStyle. This was around the time of when the internet was just starting to get big, and it was becoming a thing. I saw all of the opportunities that my friends who were budding bloggers were getting, but I knew I didn't want to go out on my own. I knew I didn't want to become a blogger myself, so I figured I would go after a digital job.

That's how I ended up at Glamour. I was the style editor there. I wrote fashion and beauty posts. From there, it's just sort of grown and grown—my career has. I took a detour back into print when I went to GQ, but I really wanted to try something new.

I'd been a little burned out at my job previously, and I think every job that I've had I've always been like, "I don't want that job." When I was a fashion editor, I was like, "I don't want to be a digital director. Seems like too much work." Then I was like, "I don't want to be an editor in chief. Seems like too much work." Here I am having done both.

Despite your best efforts, you just keep climbing that ladder.

I just keep climbing that ladder. I think that in my last two jobs—this job and the one before it—I was approached for the jobs. In being approached, I've realized that I could do the job, and I could do a good job at the job. So that's sort of how the trajectory has occurred.

Honestly, when it came to the Marie Claire job, I really wanted to work with Hillary [Kerr]. I think that she's so incredibly smart and prolific and has built an incredible brand in Who What Wear and the many other brands that she's helped launch. I really wanted to just be able to learn from her. That's generally how many of my jobs come together.

As a digital director at Harper's Bazaar, I wanted to work with Leah Chernikoff, and I wanted to work with Samira Nasr. I think it's more so for me the team that I'm going to be around and the team that I'm going to be able to build. The exact job itself is great, but it's more so about the team.

Can you describe how you've developed your personal style and which designers you can't stop wearing right now that you have on your radar?

My personal style is always and has always been rooted in comfort and functionality before anything else. When I'm trying to figure out what I'm going to wear for the day—especially during fashion month—I know that it has to be an outfit that's going to take me from 9 a.m. to 9 p.m. Comfort and function are always two things that are top of mind.

The purple top that I was wearing was Dries Van Noten, and I wear a lot of Dries because I think that he really creates beautiful clothing that can actually be worn.

I think a lot of designers create beautiful clothing, and sometimes they look like showpieces or they can't be worn every day or whatever it is, but Dries does a really good job of addressing all of the things that a woman has to go through and her day-to-day and really just makes me feel put together and beautiful but also concretely myself.

You see the art on my walls. I love color. I think it's a really great way to make an impact with a very low lift. So lots of color in my wardrobe.

I wore a lot of Dries this season. I wore a lot of Tibi. Amy [Smilovic] over at Tibi is just doing such amazing things and really just addressing a woman's day-to-day.

J.Crew, obviously. I also have always been a fan of the brand from the Jenna Lyons days to Olympia [Gayot]. Now I think she's doing amazing things and really has revived the brand.

Margiela. Everyone has a Tabi boot, Tabi shoe sort of story.

I just got Tabi boots two years ago. I want to say they're surprisingly comfortable, but they're the same thing as I was saying: a simple shoe that you can wear with anything—simple I say in quotes because it's literally a camel-toe shoe, so it's a funny simple shoe but maximum impact, low lift.

Then Kallmeyer. Daniella Kallmeyer is a designer that I met in New York, but I finally got to see her pieces up close and break bread with her over Paris Fashion Week. I've worn a lot of her stuff as well. She's an amazing New York–based designer who I'm really excited to support.

Even just jeans and a T-shirt can look and feel special if they're styled alongside an elegant pair of pumps or some sleek heeled boots. But these days, shoes, particularly those of the designer variety, don't come cheap. The days of Carrie Bradshaw buying new Manolos in the $400 range simply don't exist anymore, and investing in luxury shoes calls for a tad more backing from your bank account. 

Because of that, most people, myself included, aren't likely to order a pair of expensive footwear on a whim. They want to do their research in the form of reading reviews, seeing how they look on other people, etc. That's where I come in. Last week, I took a break from scrolling to shop in person instead, popping into Nordstrom's NYC flagship to take over the designer-shoe salon and test-drive a handful of the retailer's most of-the-moment and sought-after offerings for fall. The result? An entirely perfect afternoon for a shopping-obsessed editor like myself and lots and lots of temptation.

The Row Coco Bootie

I've never owned nor even tried on a pair of boots from The Row, but now that I have, I can see why so many fashion people count on the quiet-luxury brand for all of their footwear, especially in the fall and winter. Unlike many pairs of expensive shoes, The Row's boots fit like they're expensive. The Coco booties, in particular, slid right on without any tugging or adjusting necessary, and the back zipper zipped closed without a single issue. (Is there anything worse than an investment piece with a fast-fashion-grade zipper?) Oh, and did I mention how timeless and sophisticated they look IRL? Yeah, these are going on my wish list. 

Prada Loop Bouquet Pointed Toe Flat

Prada's F/W 23 Bouquet and Bunny shoe styles have pretty much dominated my Instagram feed ever since they debuted at the Milan Fashion Week show last February. And while many of the items that go viral don't hold up in person, these aren't one of them. First off, the floral detailing is like a work of art with the ability to make any outfit look unique, no matter what it consists of. Second, the pointed toe allows these to be far more formal than most flats on the market that have a square or round toe, like a ballet style or a Mary Jane. As for sizing, I would recommend going down a half size, as I tried on my normal one and my heels had a tendency to slip out when I walked. Adding a pad on the backs of each shoe would also probably solve this problem.

One look at my fall mood board, and you'll see clearly that I'm very much into Westerncore for the season ahead, so when I saw that Nordstrom had this pair of suede boots from Toteme in stock in my size, I couldn't stop myself from trying them on. I would say that out of all the shoes I tried on, these were perhaps the most comfortable, which I find surprisingly more difficult to find in boots than even heels. The width of the boot is a bit narrow but in a very flattering, sleek way that I know would look so chic peeking out from under a pair of jeans. Apparently, though, I'm not the only person fangirling over these boots. Most of the sizes are sold out at Nordstrom. Saint Laurent Blade Square Toe Slingback Sandal

If your winter style goal is Hailey Bieber, you pretty much need this pair of patent-leather slingbacks from Saint Laurent that she's constantly wearing for nights out in L.A., Paris, NYC, and more. And I can see why she likes them. These rhinestone-encrusted kitten heels make everything look cool and, surprisingly, despite the blade-like pointed toe, aren't terribly uncomfortable if you properly size the back strap to fit you (something I didn't do at first and could feel the difference). 

Saint Laurent Diane Knee High Boot

For 28 years, I've been on a quest to find a knee-high boot that I didn't want to own, and after trying on this round-toed pair with tiny gold hardware from Saint Laurent, I'm fully convinced it'll never ever happen. But I'm fine with that, especially if it means that these can be mine. Admittedly, these particular boots are very tall, and because of that, they aren't a total breeze to walk in, or at least, I'd have to get used to the height before I embarked on any long walks in them. But a tall heel has never deterred me, and it probably won't anytime soon.

Bottega Veneta Wedge Pointed Toe Pump

One of the reasons that I never regret investing in shoes from Bottega Veneta is how wildly comfortable they are thanks to rubber pads that every pair has on the bottom, adding both tread and increased padding. I walk more than 10,000 steps on concrete every single day in New York, so I need my shoes to be able to handle that, especially since I have a rule about actually wearing my nice shoes regularly instead of letting them collect dust in a box for a fancy occasion. This particular pair is even better for this because the wedge shape adds a ton of stability that standard stilettos cannot offer.

When I saw just how well these brown patent-leather mules with golden hardware paired with my new Andiamo bag, I simply had to see the duo together. Just like with all BV heels, these were super comfortable and easy to walk in despite the fairly tall heel, and the metallic detailing takes them from a simple yet still chic shoe choice into an eye-catching and compliment-warranting style that would get so much wear no matter the season.

I'll be the first person to admit that these aren't the most tame or approachable boots, but given how cool they look on celebrities like Margot Robbie as well as on the runways at Bottega Veneta's shows, I simply had to try them out for myself. Getting them on is a bit of workout, it's true, but immediately upon zipping them up, I felt genuinely on top of the world. The thigh-high shaft makes you look 10 feet tall, and though I was wearing a midi slip dress when I wore them, I just know that they'd look incredible with a minidress or oversize shirt worn as a dress.

I'm not usually a big chunky-boot person, preferring sleeker styles that can be easily dressed up and down, but the obvious luxe-factor associated with these soft-leather, bone-colored boots from The Row triggered something in me that practically forced me to try them on. Immediately, I knew that if I ended up owning these, I'd wear them constantly with chunky cashmere or wool socks and an oversize maxi coat all the way up until the first real day of spring.

Loafers are famously uncomfortable and almost always give you blisters, especially if they're new. It's something that lovers of the style everywhere have seemingly just accepted as fact and a painful experience one must go through to benefit from their stylish, timeless attributes. But when I tell you that these soft-leather loafers from The Row couldn't possibly hurt you, I'm not lying to spare your feelings nor am I exaggerating to get you to buy them. For real, they felt like slippers. 

Saint Laurent Cherish Pointed Toe Slingback Pump

For the coming holiday season, I can't think of a single shoe more perfect than these rhinestone-studded Saint Laurent slingbacks. They're just the right amount of festive without feeling kitschy and will pair immaculately with an LBD. As for wearability, the heel is so itty-bitty that walking in these is a breeze.

I must tell you I'm not usually one to change the type of perfume I wear seasonally. Call me a creature of habit, but once I fall in love with a fragrance, I will wear it year-round, regardless of whether it fits that season's mood. Though they're home to the same revered fashion houses as every womenswear season, the menswear shows rarely get the same amount of attention or buzz. The shows are attended by a niche selection of editors, stylists, and industry professionals; cut in roughly half compared to the women's shows; and timed right before couture week, so the biannual unveiling of menswear collections simply (and sadly) gets overshadowed in many ways. But in my mind, they are, more often than not, a treasure trove for outfit and trend ideas.

Don't just take my word for it, though—that would be irresponsible. Instead, read up on, scan photos of, and shop the eight most alluring menswear trends from the spring/summer 2024 shows, all of which you can conveniently do by scrolling down just a few notches. While the trends are from the men's department, the shopping isn't. (You're welcome.) Without further ado, get to know the menswear trends that'll be everywhere next spring and pick out every one that you'll be wearing yourself. 

A clear through line can be drawn from the fall/winter 2023 womenswear collections to the just-debuted spring/summer 2024 collections in regard to the trend I'm calling "peak wearability." Not too long ago, dressing erred more on the complicated than the easy side, with the need to mix and match patterns and bright colors (without doing too much) being a regular stressor in many fashion peoples' brains. Now, brands like Prada, Loewe, and Gucci are all pushing a far more relaxed dressing agenda that involves denim, trench coats, and blazers instead of wild silhouettes and trippy patterns.

Though there were a few pairs of extra-long, almost capri-length shorts on the men's runways this season in Milan and Paris, the majority of non-pants were short—like really, really short. Wales Bonner and Dries Van Noten kept their options quite casual with flowier silhouettes that would fit right in on the stone streets of a seaside Italian town, and Dior, Hermès, and Ami went a more formal route, manufacturing the daring silhouette in structured tweed and leather.

Goodbye, loud colors—hello, head-to-toe gray. But don't think of that as a bad thing. If the spring collections taught me anything, it's that wearing a groutfit can only lead to total chicness, especially if tailored pieces like blazers, pressed shorts, and trousers are involved.

Though a lot of what came out of the spring/summer 2024 menswear shows was pretty relaxed and wearable, there was one volume-up trend to take note of: all things bright, sparkling, and sequin covered. At Loewe, Jonathan Anderson sent models down the runway in denim covered in crystals, whereas Gucci's lookbook featured entire ensembles made of a chrome-like embellishment. Tame? No. Fun to wear? Certainly.

If you were starting to doubt yourself for buying so many cardigans in the late 2010s and early 2020s when the sweater style was the only one anyone could talk about, let this season's menswear offerings soothe your mind. From Fendi to Dior, the knit that every single grandpa on the planet adored (yes, that's an exaggeration but only slightly) was everywhere, made of tweed and fine cashmere alike.

From super-deep V-necks to daringly low-scooped cuts, the tanks, sweaters, and polos showcased at Valentino, JW Anderson, Saint Laurent, and more during the spring 2024 menswear shows weren't designed for the faint of heart. But that doesn't make me want to wear them any less. In fact, like most risqué trends, it only makes them more alluring and challenging (in a good way) to style casually this season.

Knitwear's typically reserved for the fall and winter runways, but one exception arrived this season in the form of loosely woven sweaters and vests at Dries Van Noten, Ludovic de Saint Sernin, Amiri, and more. The beach-ready throw-over is one to always keep on hand for those chilly summer nights when going sleeveless will only end in goosebumps and disaster.

No matter how steamy it tends to get in Italy and Paris during the spring and summer, designers such as Matthew Williams at Givenchy and Anthony Vaccarello at Saint Laurent refused to give fashion people a breezy reprieve in the suiting department. They choose instead to remain steadfastly dedicated to sleek, super-tailored suits, further proving that nothing's chicer, no matter the time of year or the temperatures outside.

It finally doesn't feel like a chore to be outside! And accordingly, I've already swapped out my heavy-duty coats and wool sweaters in favor of lightweight jackets and easy-open knits. But more than those pieces, the real star of the warm weather season is the dress. Other than the fact that it's the ultimate time-saver, there's a magic of being out in the sun with a dress that other clothes can't recreate. Thankfully, I've got plenty of options to make that dream happen.

As a person extremely into dresses, I tend to flag and bookmark the ones I come across that truly wow me. The folder has been steadily growing since December—and even more so now with the arrival of spring-summer runway collections finally hitting stores. From neon catsuits to micro bikinis, Dua Lipa has more than proven that she can pull anything off. And her latest look, worn by the "Levitating" singer during a recent trip to Tokyo, is no exception. For what appears to be a jam-packed evening full of museum tours, shopping malls, and late-night roaming throughout the city, Lipa chose to combine not one, not two, but three controversial trends into a single outfit (four if you count the wedge heels). Even more shocking, she made what would normally be a puzzling combination look chic.

Given the amount of hype around what feels like every beauty launch, it's fair to say that when a new luxury beauty brand slips off my radar, I get curious. Take for example one of beauty's most recent brand launches—Dries Van Noten. I have known for some time that the fashion brand was planning a beauty launch, but beyond marking the launch date in my oversaturated calendar, that was about as far as things went. In fact, it wasn't until 10 days after it launched that I even realised it was available to shop. 

And let me tell you something—few things that go on in the beauty industry pass me by. I'm nosy as hell. Not only am I religiously following every big name in beauty, I also work with all of the top beauty editors in the game and read every major (and minor) beauty site every single morning for research purposes. So for the launch of Dries Van Noten beauty to pass me by for 10 whole days is really quite something.

Since its launch at the end of last month, Dries Van Noten hasn't clogged up my Instagram feed. In fact, I have seen just a handful of posts from people I follow talking about the launch. And this surprised me in all of the right ways. How refreshing it is for a new brand to launch with minimal fuss and without saturating our social media feeds with tough sells or paying influencers to sing its praises. Instead, what I had seen was a handful of totally organic, glowing reviews from people whose opinion I really respect (everyone's favourite manicurist Harriet Westmoreland was the first I saw to really shout about DVN beauty on Instagram). And that made me want to try it even more. 

Comprising 10 fragrances, 31 lipstick shades, four lipstick cases, hand cream, soap and a few other beauty accessories, Dries Van Noten's beauty collection is impressively tight and refined. While other luxury fashion houses launch into beauty with vast makeup collections and bring out variations of the same fragrance every other season, Dries Van Noten has stuck to what it knows—luxury craftsmanship that has been carefully considered. 

I'll admit, the first thing that lured me in was the way the products look. I have, hand on heart, never seen a collection of perfumes that looks quite as chic as these. They look like works of art. They're the sorts of bottles I will keep out of my shelf long after they're empty. The lipsticks are equally as chic. With four case options in various patterns and designs, they ooze luxury and expense. 

Then we come onto the brand's eco credentials. Each fragrance is made up of over 85% natural-origin ingredients and is encased in a bottle made up of responsibly sourced, recyclable materials. The lipsticks are refillable—the cases are lightweight while the lipsticks themselves are small and (of course) animal-friendly. Most impressively though, the external packaging is a stroke of genius. Using FSC-certified paper and renewable natural wood fibres, there isn't a single unnecessary packaging component that could be deemed a waste. Needless to say, it's all recyclable too.

But, of course, no beauty launch is worth writing about unless the formulas themselves are worth it. And trust me when I say these products are winners. Truly, I have never come across a beauty collection quite like this. It is, for lack of a better word, the best beauty collection I've ever experienced. In fact, just this afternoon when I posted that I was writing this worthy review on my Instagram I had a number of other beauty insiders message me in agreement (Westmoreland included).

No, there isn't a tonne of products on offer, but what Dries Van Noten does offer, it does exceptionally well. For starters, the lipsticks are easily the best I've ever tried. Each one contains rosehip oil to leave lips feeling soft and comfortable. The matte formula in particular is a work of beauty genius. It leaves a matte, soft-focus blur of colour without causing even a hint of drying discomfort. I can't recommend them enough. 

Then we come onto the fragrances. Trust me when I say you will never experience perfumes like these. They are rich, mouth-wateringly delicious and have the power to turn every single head you walk past on the street. And they do all of this without being too much. They're not heady but also don't dilute on the skin into watery nothingness. They're expensive, yes, but the quality also oozes expense. It's as if the brand has taken every attribute of the chicest, richest women on the planet and rolled it all up into one hell of a fragrance collection. Seriously, Dries Van Noten beauty is the chicest, most exquisite beauty brand in existence.

Kendall Jenner has officially kicked off sandal season, but the style she's backing for summer might not be at the top of everyone's shopping lists—at least not yet. Twice in the last two weeks, the supermodel has sported a pair of Dries Van Noten platform flip-flops, a shoe style with quite the controversial past. Despite reigning supreme in the early aughts, with frequent sightings on everyone from Paris Hilton to Jennifer Aniston, chunky thong sandals have since joined low-rise jeans and visible thongs on a long list of Y2K trends that many would prefer to have stayed there. 

But with a loyal fan as influential as Jenner—who paired the style once with a white tank top and kelly-green pants and again with a maxi-length body-con Loewe dress—and countless buzzy brands bringing the retro shoe style into the modern era, it appears that the tides are turning for the platform sandal style. Whenever personal stylist and brand consultant Amanda Murray pops up on my Instagram feed, it's not merely an outfit photo, it's an event. As an editor, it's my job to keep tabs on what stylish people around the world are wearing, so it's safe to say that I see my fair share of daily outfit images. However, Murray stands out from the pack: whenever she posts a picture you can be sure it will be nothing short of a look. 

The London-bred New Yorker spent years working as a stylist for legendary department store Barneys, and consequently, her closet is filled with top-notch pieces. The notion of treating designer fashion like precious artifacts on display is not a concept you'll find on the stylist's feed; for Murray, fashion is meant to be worn. Anyone who spends a lot of time with me knows that I’m not one to really switch up my style. Not only do I like to wear versions of the same thing—jeans and a tee—nearly every day, but my tendencies fall on the simpler side, with basics making up the bulk of my wardrobe and statement pieces earning more of a small, supporting role. This is why, whether I retire a trend or adopt a new one (as it usually takes me a while to warm up to them), it’s a pretty big deal.

Many of the looks included various styles of colorful trench coats and patterned boots, giving the collection a decorative and elaborate feel. Most of the outerwear pieces had intricate prints and designs while the basic items were left simple, preventing the collection from feeling too overwhelming. The collection also featured vibrant furs incorporated into the patterned pieces, adding to the decorative and diverse nature of the show. Nothing makes you feel more stylish than wearing a stand-out, statement piece. For some that may be a rare vintage jacket, for others that may be a fashion-forward trend piece straight from the runway. Sweater weather is upon us, and as the temperature cools, the sartorial possibilities heat up. For his F/W 15 collection, Antwerp-based designer Dries van Noten showed a collection inspired by what he refers to as "grounded glamour." The idea: Clothes that are as wearable and modest as they are glamorous and high-fashion.

His technique: Mixing the high and the low in expert ways, such as interweaving gold brocade with a classic quilted knit. The collection was also influenced by some of the designs that dominated van Noten's early career, with its Orientalia-inspired aesthetic.
