If you've had Diane von Furstenberg pinned as the place maximalists shop, you're not wrong, but that's only half the picture. I'm currently shopping for vacation, and I went in expecting only colorful prints (yes, they are very much still there), but I came out surprised by how many simple, versitile staples there are too. As it turns out, DVF does both: the bold and the understated, especially if you still wear black on a beach trip. The brand may be best known for its iconic eye-catching patterns, but it's also expanded into a more refined, everyday aesthetic.

That said, maximalism was all over the fall/winter 2025 runways, and what's being referred to as loud luxury took over at Saint Laurent, Tory Burch, Bottega Veneta, and Chanel. Whether you're devoted to pared-back essentials, loyal to statement pieces, or somewhere in between, I've included something for everyone.

Since the start of the COVID-19 pandemic, life as we know it has changed in too many ways to count. Weekends once enhanced by live performances, new restaurants, and world-class museum exhibits have been scaled back to smaller pleasures such as Netflix, takeout, and carefully curated Instagram posts. But no matter the circumstances, art—in any medium—has the power to lift us up, and this power continues to prevail through even the most trying times. Today, no modern creator is dedicated to spreading that joie de vivre quite like pop artist Ashley Longshore. 

As a student at the University of Montana, Longshore picked up a watercolor painting kit one morning and didn’t put it down until the evening. The self-taught artist has been painting ever since. "At that moment, I found this unbelievable joy, this love in my life that I was addicted to immediately, and I just had to do it,” she recalls. "I’m an anxious person, so it was a way for me to take my energy and create something that was a tangible representation of time in my life, which made me feel productive and at peace.” It is this positivity that inspired some of Longshore’s earliest paintings, which include massive portraits of Frida Kahlo and Audrey Hepburn. "Having those images of great women around me was powerful,” she explains. "In my mind, I would talk to them, like crazy artist stuff. There’s a synergy there; it’s exciting and motivating and fun.”

If you haven’t already come across Longshore’s work, her latest book, Roar!: A Collection of Mighty Women, provides an excellent introduction to the ebullient Louisiana-based artist. This gorgeous coffee-table tome features portraits of 57 incredible women, ranging from ancient Egypt’s Cleopatra to present-day tech innovator Whitney Wolfe Herd. Many of these images have been shared on Longshore’s personal Instagram and displayed at her independently owned gallery and the Diane von Furstenberg flagship store in New York, which houses the original collection of paintings. A darling among the fashion set, Longshore worked with von Furstenberg to curate the collection of women featured in both the exhibition and the book. "Diane is such a lover of women and brought great energy to the room,” explains Longshore. "She introduced me to some women that I wasn’t really familiar with, like Hedy Lamarr, Lee Miller, and Martine Rothblatt. There were a lot of women that aren’t household names who have incredible stories. It isn’t so much about what they accomplished, but the shit that they got through.” With their life journeys in mind, Longshore creates her portraits filled with vibrant color and fantastical elements. It is her unique way of honoring these phenomenal women. 

In fact, Longshore practices what her art preaches. Inspired by Dia de los Muertos traditions, she pays tribute to many of the women who she has painted by creating an altar of flowers, lighting candles, and celebrating their spirit throughout the month of October. "When I wake up every morning, I get my cocoa and light the candles, then check on the flowers and honor of these women,” she explains, showing me her display full of marigolds interwoven between her portraits of Ruth Bader Ginsburg, Kahlo, and Hepburn. "I’ll be adding more—I just put these up yesterday—but it’s important to me that we honor them, love them, support them, and talk about them to preserve their legacy.” 

Given that the subjects of her portraits span centuries, I can’t help but inquire who, living or dead, Longshore would like to meet if given the opportunity. She doesn’t skip a beat before supplying the answer: Maya Angelou. "Back when she was younger, she was scared of the power of her own words and then grew up to become the greatest orator,” gushes Longshore. "The way she saw the world, the way she captured pain and could express her thoughts, it was such a gift.” Of course, as she is an artist, Longshore’s short list also includes art collector Peggy Guggenheim, essayist Susan Sontag, and entertainer Josephine Baker. As for contemporary women, Billie Eilish and Lizzo recently made the cut. "Talk about authentic, incredible women,” she exclaims. "I love that they’re unapologetic and that they know they may not be for everybody, but they are true to themselves. May we all have that much fearlessness.”

Outside of her vibrant portraiture, Longshore is a delightful character herself. A burgeoning "enfant terrible” among living artists, she finds joy in being a bit audacious or occasionally perverse. "It’s been hard times for an optimist, you know. There’s a lot of really serious things going on, and everything isn’t always fucking fun, but it doesn’t hurt to uplift each other and inspire people to go out there and kick some ass,” she divulges. In fact, this is her philosophy when it comes to marketing her artwork—and herself—on Instagram. Longshore’s feed is always colorful and often funny. She recently posted a photo of herself wearing her "big-girl panties,” sharing her jovial and uplifting personality with her fans. 

This sense of self is apparent not only in Longshore’s art but also in her personal style. An accessory lover, she wears layers upon layers of jewelry ("I sleep in all of this!”), and she assures me that pearls can make any outfit: "Just put a jacket over black pajamas, add a cute pair of sneakers, toss on some pearls, and you're ready to roll.” However, Longshore’s ultimate fashion weakness is sunglasses. No joke, she has a sunglass closet like Elton John. "It started when I didn’t have any money. I would save up until I had like $300 and would buy a new pair of sunglasses. It upgrades everything; you feel like you have on a brand-new outfit,” she says. Longshore is drawn to oversize styles but admits she’s "one of those crazy people” who buys sunglasses without trying them on. Her current obsessions include over-the-top styles by Anna-Karin Karlsson and a new pair of everyday Tom Ford shades.

Since Longshore is a portrait artist, I am curious about what elements she would include in a painting of herself. "I’m all about legs and hair and attitude and titties,” she jokes. "I know every woman has attributes that are her favorite things and are just flawless. I love my hair, and I love my life.” 

This sentiment is, perhaps, the essence of Longshore. "I wear a necklace that says ‘I would fuck me,’” she confides with a wink. "It’s actually my handwriting. I had written it on a piece of paper eight or nine years ago, and my sweet pea (fiancé Michael Smith) took it to a jeweler and had it made into a gold necklace with diamonds. That was my Christmas gift one year.” I can’t help but laugh, then gawk as she brings the gorgeous bespoke piece of jewelry closer to her camera lens for me to see. 

With the holiday season just around the corner, celebrating the people in our lives and lifting each other’s spirits is certainly top of mind. A diamond-encrusted necklace with an explicit message probably isn’t in the cards for everyone, but a copy of Longshore’s exquisite Roar! is certainly a gift that will bring joy and inspiration to those we hold dearest.

Kentucky Derby outfits tend to go a little something like this: Dress. Statement hat. Voilà. It's a classic formula that needn't be updated, but in case you're hoping to put an unconventional twist on your race day look, we're here to help.

While the Derby is the perfect occasion to bust out your most outlandish hat, accessories of the sort aren't necessarily required (though they're certainly encouraged). Have you ever been asked to dress “business casual” and automatically panicked, wondering what that even means? If so, you’re not alone.

For as many silly, fashion-related terms there are, I’d venture to say that “business casual” is the one that bothers me the most… even more so than “pantashoe”, and that says a lot. It’s not hard to see why the concept evokes anxiety in so many people. After all, the term itself is an oxymoron as the concept of business and casual attire are definitely two conflicting styles.

Thankfully, Business Insider has broken it down for us: “The business casual dress code encourages employees to project a... business-like image while enjoying the advantage of more casual and relaxed clothing.” So basically, “business casual” is business-y, but without being stiff. Though the clothes look polished, a “business casual” dress code would (theoretically) be a little more comfortable.

Examples of appropriate “business casual” staples may include, “slacks or khakis, dress shirt or blouse, open-collar or polo shirt, optional tie or seasonal sport coat, a dress or skirt at knee-length or below, a tailored blazer, knit shirt or sweater, and loafers or dress shoes that cover all or most of the foot.”

Our takeaway from all this? When going “business casual”, definitely err on the side of more formal rather than less—which is generally a good rule of thumb for any occasion where you’re unsure of the formality. While we often praise designers based on their latest seasons, or up-and-coming trends, there are other reasons we should celebrate brands: Namely, when they take action to incite positive change in the world. Though you may not realise, a number of very famous brands either have their own organisations, or support other charities. Because of International Women’s Day coming up, our focus is currently on unapologetic women.

We were curious to see which brands supported women’s rights, and what we found pleasantly surprised us. While we've already mentioned that online retailers like Net-A-Porter and Farfetch have curated collections that donate to women’s charities, these are the fashion brands that work to support women on a regular basis. By providing support and finances to important causes, these designers are helping to change women’s lives for the better.

Coach

By partnering with the Charity, Step Up, Coach supports teenage girls from under-resourced communities. With a three million dollar pledge, Coach’s partnership with the organisation “will enable Step up to connection an additional 3,000 girls in more cities to a network of powerful women for mutual inspiration."

Kate Spade

Kate Spade’s On Purpose line focuses on three distinct values: Empowerment, courage, and community. By using the supplier ADC, the On Purpose line provides long term jobs for women in Rwanda.

In addition, Kate Spade has also created the Kate Spade & Company Foundation. According to the brand’s website, “the Foundation is committed to providing women with access to the training, tools and access necessary to achieve economic independence.” Providing about $1.2 million per year in the forms of grants and donations, the brand “ [pursues] this mission by supporting multi-dimensional programs that transition women from under-served communities into successful individuals that inspire the people around them.”

Diane Von Furstenberg

Founded in 2010, the DVF Awards were created to recognise and support women dedicated to bettering the lives of other women. As the organisation’s website states, the women awarded “have had the courage to fight, the power to survive, and the leadership to inspire.” Each year, five recipients are given $50,000 grants in order to further their non-profit organisations.

Tory Burch

In an effort to support female entrepreneurs, the Tory Burch Foundation was created in 2009. By providing access to capital, entrepreneurial education, and mentoring and networking opportunities, the foundation encourages women to embrace ambition and follow their dreams.

Stella McCartney

It’s no secret that Stella McCartney supports charitable organisations and has been known to stand up for causes close to her heart; and one such charity is Kering Corporate Foundation. According to the brand’s website, the charity “provide[s] financial support to sustainable and long-term field initiatives conducted by NGOs on various issues surrounding violence against women and women’s empowerment.”

Marking the debut of newly appointed Chief Design Officer Nathan Jenden’s latest stint with the brand, DVF’s F/W 18 collection, shown at a presentation at NYFW yesterday, absolutely did not disappoint. The veteran designer, who’s worked with the brand in the past, set out to craft what he calls “an effortless and feminine collection, rich with vibrant color and prints” that feels new but “with a wink to the archive.” And judging by the 23 looks you’re about to see, we’d say he did just that. From retro wrap jumpsuits to vibrant outerwear in both solids and prints, the collective feeling is that of something undeniably forward, but with a nod to not just the general past, but that of the brand itself.

The task: Pack for the journey from Los Angeles to Stockholm Fashion Week. The strategy: Find practical pieces for the Scandinavian city's snowy streets that also look chic and fit with my personal style. Thankfully, I think I found a look (or two) that checked all the boxes.

For day one, I opted for a bright red Claudia Li coat with Nike sneakers, but for day two, I decided to mix it up with some ankle boots. After spotting them on our editor in chief, Kat Collings, I went with the Who What Wear Behati Booties ($45) from our collection at Target. Since there was a ton of fresh snow on the ground, flat boots were a reasonable choice—the cool patent material and easy-on-the-wallet price tag didn't hurt, either.

Today, Jonathan Saunders, the chief creative officer of American fashion house Diane von Furstenberg, announced he is stepping down from his role after 18 months, according to Business of Fashion. His resignation is effective immediately, and his last collection was Pre-Fall 18, which debuted earlier this month.

“I am grateful for Diane’s support and for the opportunity of guiding this iconic brand. I am so proud of everything we have accomplished in the past 18 months," Saunders said in a statement. "I thank the incredible team for their dedication and support, and will continue to be a friend and admirer of the brand."

Diane von Furstenberg thanked Saunders for his efforts and dedication during his 18 months, saying in a statement, "He will leave an important and lasting heritage to the brand."

As BoF also reports, Saunders joined the esteemed fashion house in May 2016, after shuttering his own London-based label. Saunders's next steps or who will assume the role of the chief creative officer have yet to be announced.

In the end, Copelman believes “it really is about the style you feel most comfortable in. She explained to Who What Wear that “it is tough to pinpoint exactly one swimsuit style that is universally flattering for each individual’s bottom since each body is so unique.” However, she revealed that “cheekier bikini bottoms are usually very flattering because they have a slimming effect and show off your best assets.” But while Copelman calls out the “cheeky” style, there are, in fact, three different silhouettes she says to look for when shopping for the most flattering bikini.
