I've always been a jeans over trousers person, but if there's one style that's got me completely captivated, it's indigo jeans.

When the trend began last year, it felt like a refreshing disruption of the lighter denims that had previously dominated. They brought a deeper, richer wash into our wardrobes, and I've been obsessed with them ever since. They feel subversive, no matter how they are styled; worn smartly they feel bold, worn casually they feel edgy, worn simply they feel vintage.

But like any new trend, there is a trial period of figuring out how to style it, and with jeans it's usually always shoes that become the sticking point. During summer we either didn't wear jeans at all, or if we did we were saved from any styling stress because flip-flops go with absolutely everything! Now autumn is here we find ourselves faced with a myriad of shoe styles from boots and loafers to trainers and ballet flats.

When it comes to finding the perfect shoe pairing for indigo jeans, I think the key is texture. What makes these jeans so versatile and striking is the flat severity of the wash, meaning texture compliments and adds depth. So whether it's a woven flat, a shoe with lots of detailing like boat shoes, or a minimal style in suede rather than leather, prioritising texture is a reliable rule for the dream jean and shoe combo.

Five months ago, Who What Wear's shopping director, Bobby Schuessler, wrote about split-hem jeans. He noted that while they can be considered "dated," they were making a comeback. He even went so far as to try on and buy a pair from Anine Bing. When I read his article in April, I was skeptical about the trend's return, but I kept it in mind. Now, seeing a well-dressed celebrity wearing them, I have to admit he was right.

Style Notes: While I expected to see baggy jeans, and even skinny styles, out in New York this week, what I didn't expect to catch sight of was the unbuttoned jeans trend. Style Notes: If you're ever stuck on what to wear, I don't think I'll ever stop suggesting mid-rise straight-leg jeans—and New York's chicest clearly agree that this denim trend will always land. Seeing out the remainder of her pregnancy between an abundance of red-carpet appearances and fashion week events, I’ve been closely monitoring Anne Hathaway’s style to settle on the trends fashion mums are gravitating towards most right now. And, on an evening outing in New York, I landed on a particularly compelling one.

Beginning with denim, as all of the very best looks do in my opinion, Anne doubled down on the timeless fabrication, selecting a roomy denim shirt to pair with tonal straight-leg jeans. Worn partially unbuttoned to reveal her midriff, the combination felt naturally polished thanks to its coordinated nature, whilst the relaxed fabrication gave the look an easy, effortless quality that makes it perfect for everyday styling.

Any fashion mum will tell you that a matching set is a cheat code for pulling together a sleek, polished look with minimal effort, no matter the hour. Here, though, the boxy proportions of the denim pairing ensure a comfortable silhouette and unfussy feel that can carry you throughout the day.

I read each of Cazzie David's essay collections as soon as they came out—No One Asked for This in 2020 and Delusions this past March—and loved both (I already can't wait for the next one). In the campaign video, written by Cazzie and her writing partner, Elisa Kalani, she takes on the role of "the denim expert you didn't know you needed." When asked how you know when you've found "the one," she shares the advice: "You'll just know. They'll lift you up. You'll reach for them every day, and miss them when they're not around." This is in reference to jeans.

Below, I spoke with Cazzie about the collaboration, her personal style, and a few of her beauty staples.

What makes you a denim expert?

If I told you I had spent 30 years studying art history, you might say I’m an expert in that field. So technically, I’m an expert at wearing jeans, as I have 30 years of experience. I am also an expert at having anxiety and watching TV.

What’s your go-to style of jeans right now?

I’m reaching for two right now, which are basically opposites. The Low-Rise Loose Jean has a relaxed straight leg and is great if you’re like me and don’t like being restrained by clothing. The Relaxed Bootcut Jean if I am going out and want to show off a particular asset.

How would you describe your personal style in your own words, and what outfit formula do you find yourself repeating over and over? What are some wardrobe staples you can’t live without?

I tend to have one outfit that I repeat over and over until everyone in my life has seen it multiple times and I can’t get away with wearing it anymore. But you can always get away with jeans and an easy T-shirt and sweater. I don’t like to draw too much attention with what I’m wearing but I always like it to feel balanced.

Any trend—or anti-trend—you’re noticing in LA right now? What’s a trend you’re loving right now, or one you predict will be big this fall?

I have to admit I am loving the move away from leggings. Like why are they so tight it never made sense.

Do you have a go-to makeup routine? What are your staples?

I use a little bit of the Kosas brightening concealer, Merit blush in “Cheeky” and don’t leave the house without grabbing five different Clinique black honey dupes.

Take a trip to Paris in the fall or winter, and you’ll likely find one clothing item on 95% of the city’s well-dressed locals: a pair of jeans. Of course, an appreciation for denim isn’t something just French girls possess, but they do have a tendency to, one, wear the best pairs, and two, style them in that effortless way that so many around the world try (and often fail) to mimic. There’s a French phrase for it, but I try to avoid clichés. You know the one.

Fortunately, I had some time this week, and I spent it scrolling through all my favorite French fashion accounts in search of the denim trends (and anti-trends) that live inside their capsule wardrobes. The French aren’t ones to overconsume or own 50+ pairs of jeans. They find the right pairs and stick with them, wearing them on repeat in different outfit combinations, so don’t fret—I’m not going to tell you to buy ten or more styles all in one go. Really, there are five styles I see the most, and most, if not all, of them are available at a wide range of prices. Anyone can achieve that French-girl-in-jeans look, and these five trends are the key.

French Girl Denim Capsule Wardrobe

Vintage 501s

Not only can you source some of the best vintage Levi’s 501s in Paris, but you can also find elite ways to style them on the streets of the city. Its locals always seem to have found that perfect pair—the ones that fit at the waist and the butt and have faded just so, like they were genuinely worked in and left to dry post-wash on a windowsill in Biarritz. Interestingly enough, Paris’s ties with the 501 style go way back. Levi’s brought them to the French capital in the 1930s, sending them down the runway at a show spotlighting American fashion.

Classic White

Another jeans style I always see French girls wear is white denim, and not just in the summer. If you love your jeans, why would you only wear them for three months out of the year? Instead, classic white jeans with zero stretch and a straight or slightly more fitted cut are taken from one season to the next, styled with sandals, ballet flats, loafers, and heeled ankle boots. A great way to take them from beachy to sophisticated is to add a black belt. I prefer one with gold hardware personally, but you do you.

The New Bootcut

Bootcut jeans aren’t as prevalent in France as the first two styles are, but their presence is growing rapidly, with new styles quickly growing roots among chic women across the country. The trick to getting them right? Opt for low- to mid-rise silhouettes in darker rinses. As for styling, stiletto boots or heels with a sharp heel will always look high-end. Keep your outfit simple with a black boatneck tee or fitted sweater that shows off a touch of midriff while still maintaining an air of sophistication and elegance.

Indigo Jeans

Indigo jeans are everywhere right now, not just in Paris, but whenever a new denim trend arrives (or an old one returns), I like to look there first for inspiration. Specifically, I check out Sylvie Mus’s page. She has a way of making all denim look expensive and polished. With indigo jeans, she’s wearing sleeveless turtlenecks, leather jackets, and lightweight ivory knits. Follow her lead. In terms of footwear, dark brown or black leather flats, heels, and boots will work every time.

Khaki Shades

Khaki jeans are the IYKYK style that you should absolutely have on your wishlist or in your wardrobe for fall 2026. They’re quickly becoming more anti-trend than trend, thanks to their neutral coloring and generally versatile qualities. Look for a classic straight-leg fit—Levi’s and Khaite both have great options—and pair it with flat mules in brushed leather or low-profile sneakers. A simple white button-down shirt is all you need to finish off the look, but a belt won’t hurt either.

If you haven't heard, jazz shoes will be one of fall 2026's biggest footwear trends. They're already everywhere, and it's still summer. Within the last few months, they've been spotted on Naomi Watts, Lily Collins, Simone Ashley, Gracie Abrams, and Charlize Theron. These flats have been dressed up and down in countless ways, but the most stylish pairing is with a classic denim silhouette recently showcased by Grace Gummer.

This week in London with her husband, Mark Ronson, Gummer was photographed wearing white jazz flats, likely Celine's runway pair, with light-wash straight-leg jeans, a striped button-down shirt, black sunglasses, and a brown suede bag.
