Are Mesh Bags in Style?

“Mesh brings a certain intrigue,” explains Jane Frances, creative director and co-founder of Dear Frances. The London-based luxury label focuses on footwear and accessories that enhance off-duty outfits with polish, elegance and minimalism. Known for their sock-esque cult ballet flat, I caught up with Frances off the back of their brick-and-mortar launch into Selfridges to understand just why the see-through look is so in demand.

“The idea that a handbag, used to house and protect our valuable everyday essentials, can be reworked to subtly reveal is unexpected,” she adds, noting why they're back in style. “There's a vulnerability to it which is honest, fresh and exciting.”

Of course, mesh is a fabric that has been employed in accessory design for years—it’s the backbone for the functional packing cubes that go inside your Rimowa carry-on luggage or make up the checked laundry bag that you schlep to and from your local dry cleaner. Despite these associations, they’ve been given a luxury makeover. Dear Frances has just launched their first mesh bag called the Sacchetto.

It’s a slouchy and sophisticated long-line shoulder bag made from fine Italian fabric and finished with soft nappa leather. Don’t let the fragility and daintiness fool you, however, the structure of these bags makes them dependable enough to fit your laptop, beach read and grocery haul alike.

According to Frances, mesh bags make such a versatile style as they “go against the obvious”. According to her, the trend “adds a certain considered depth with its unique texture and displays a confidence of the wearer.”

Alongside Dear Frances, The Row’s woven-mesh barn tote is an iteration that’s also leading the charge. The Jenner sisters both featured the striped style as part of their European Summer holiday wardrobes—Kylie wore it with white capri pants when gallivanting around Venice, while Kendall took a more languid approach by pairing it with Ancient Greek Sandals’s saionara jelly flip-flops when in St. Tropez—though local members of the fashion influencer set like Monikh Dale and Marianne Smyth have posted the piece, too.

The trend has also begun cropping up at Longchamp, Proenza Schouler and Alaïa, meaning that there are plenty of contenders for the best mesh bag crown already available. That’s not exempting the expensive-looking high-street versions, either, with brands like COS and Massimo Dutti designing their own versions that rival its opulent counterparts.

“Mesh requires intentional consideration,” Frances reminds me, though. Styling wise, play of other textures, like structured denim or silk trousers, to give a more impactful look. And always remember, the best mesh bags will make the contents of whatever’s stored inside visible, so perhaps in a little pouch for your most personal items. Another reason why it’s a worthy investment? “It pushes the boundaries of comfort and style, never compromising one for the other.” Sure, you’ll have to constantly clean out the receipts and junk that end up littered at the bottom of your other luxury bags, but the payoff will be well worth it.

What to Keep in a Mesh Bag?

Now that you've invested in the best mesh bag that suits your personal style and specific needs, the next point of call is to pack it. Like travelling light, curating your handbag is an art. I would know. There have been times when I've been the woman who has everything, and other instances when I've been the person who carries nothing except the clothes on her back. Until last year I never considered myself much of an autumnal dresser. My style has always leant towards windswept dresses that are apt for balmy temperatures. As I approach my mid-thirties, I’m embracing styles that caress, in rich tones that feel characteristically autumn. Considering the forecast we’ve been granted thus far, I’ve been thrust into the realm of autumn dressing prematurely. I have to admit, it’s inspired me, especially when revisiting some of my favourite A/W shows from February. Last week’s Copenhagen Fashion Week saw temperatures drop and attendees donning windswept umbrellas and clad in elongated lengths. Although it was a far cry from last year’s summery styles, it presented us with a smorgasbord of deep hues, textures and juxtaposed fabrications — signalling the start of transitional dressing.

There are many transitional pieces I’ve adopted as part of my uniform and both summer and autumn looks can be built with and around them. White full skirts, for example (which happens to be a trending piece this year). The bright wash and airy voile compliments fuzzy knitwear beautifully. The same goes for accessories. If you’re enjoying basket bags this season, consider investing in a leather patina you can wear with sundresses or trench coats and blazers.

The key to dressing for transitional seasons is layers that you can either pile up or shed. Take Sylvie’s look — the svelte and flesh-baring elements of a silken dress are appropriate for warm weather, but pop a trench coat over the top and it instantly transforms into an autumn-appropriate outfit. When it rains, swap open-toe shoes for heeled boots. Or, Marina’s look. With this in mind, we spoke to seven designers—including Jane Frances of Dear Frances, Vanissa Antonious of Neous and Valentina Bezuhanova of By FAR—about what makes a really great pair of shoes, in an effort to understand how to curate a collection that will not only provide aesthetic beauty but also longevity and comfort.

Of course, many of the designers below stressed the importance of investing in quality footwear and outlined the details which prove a shoe is well made—whether it be leather soles or hand-stitching. Sorry, but what even is a comfortable shoe? For so long, I kind of just assumed that in order to walk around all day and not want to rip my shoes off the moment I walked through the door, it was a given that I had to wear something a little clunky (or sneakers). For a shoe brand where the majority of the styles are under $200, finding a pair of Vagabond shoes feels like a secret. How are they this good and this affordable? It seems too good to be true, yet the three pairs of shoes I own from the brand speak for themselves. The true test? Somehow the pumps are downright enjoyable for all-day wear.

3. Dr. Martens

Ask anyone who owns a pair of Dr. Martens, and they'll happily share just how comfortable they really are. Don't let the break-in period deter you—once your Docs are nice and worn in, they actually mold to the shape of your foot, so it ends up feeling like you're walking on a cloud (speaking from experience here).

4. G.H.Bass

No matter the season, my classic penny loafers from G.H.Bass are always in heavy rotation. After just a few wears, they mold to your feet for the perfect fit that I swear makes them comfier to wear than half of the sneakers I own, and considering the brand was founded in 1876, it's clearly had time to perfect them. To me, they're the ultimate high-quality, long-lasting wardrobe staple.

5. Paige

Don't take the recommendation from me; take it from one of the many Who What Wear editors (and Kaia Gerber) who can attest that the denim brand's shoe collection is equally as comfortable as its well-known jeans.

6. Essen

Comfortable shoes (that don't compromise style) are hard to come by, so I was impressed to discover Essen, whose shoes have a timeless quality about them with certain details that make them feel more forward.

7. Eledera

No matter how comfortable a pair of shoes promises to be, I always loathe the break-in period, so I was very pleased to find that the shoes from this Milan-based label have zero downtime. I wore its red suede ballet flats right out of the box for a busy day filled with meetings and barely felt a thing, which almost never happens with a new pair of shoes. It speaks to the great care that the brand takes with its quality and craftsmanship.

What do Emma Roberts, Sienna Miller, Gigi Hadid, and Emily Ratajkowski all have in common? Apart from having a knack for fashion, all of these women are sworn fans of the artisan footwear label, Dear Frances. Launched in 2014 by Jane Frances, the eponymous brand has risen to fame over the past few years. Take a quick look at the shoes, and you’re sure to see why. But the brand doesn’t limit its focus to just the final outcome. Attention-to-detail throughout the entire process and an the extremely knowledgeable founder behind the name has given the brand the clout it has today.

Jane Frances’ story isn’t exactly what you’d typically expect from a footwear designer. Rather than spending years studying fashion and interning in the industry, she took an alternative path which—when considering the brand from the current moment—seems to have actually had a beneficial effect on her designs and process. Having foregone a fashion education for marketing, her background helped shape her into the successful entrepreneur she is today.

After her studies, she then eschewed the typical intern route so often followed in the industry for a more hands-on experience. “After my studies I worked at a footwear factory in Northern Italy, where I learned the age-old techniques of Italian shoe production from some of the most experienced artisans in the country” the designer told Forbes. “It was through this process that I truly refined my own style and noticed a need in the market for a quality classics with a refined, modern simplicity.”

Still reflected in Dear Frances’ styles today, her commitment to craftsmanship goes far beyond aesthetic. The brand’s site highlights that despite growing popularity, production still happens in the same factory where Frances first became involved in footwear design. While this crafting undeniably adds to the appeal of the designs, its effects also reach beyond the scope of the shoes themselves. In fact, it is this process that allows Dear Frances to “[utilise] sustainable materials and processes to develop a new kind of luxury.” a luxury that helps consumers increase their sartorial integrity. 

The shoes are made to last, which means less overall waste in the long run. Long-lasting stylish footwear… talk about a win-win. And the brand’s social conscious doesn’t stop there. In addition to crafting shoes with an aim to ease a bit of our modern-day environmental woes, Dear Frances also focuses on social disparities as well. “We believe that good shoes make you look and feel great. Big news for a Thursday: Emily Ratajkowski just stepped out in a spring boot trend we have been dying to try but weren't quite sure how to wear: bucket boots. Bucket boots hit right below the knee and widen around the calf creating a bucket-like shape. Yes, I live in New York, so I have an unreasonably small closet. But that hasn't stopped me from amassing a sizable collection of shoes, or, more specifically, boots. Navigating the lines at airport security is miserable, we all know it. But wearing the right things can be the difference between a not-so-great and an awful situation by the time you hit security. While my Birkenstocks are practically glued to my feet, a recent visit to the airport convinced me that they may be better off left in the carry-on. 

As a proud TSA Prechecker, I've come to rely on the fact that usually I can breeze through airport security in 10 minutes flat, laptop tucked into my bag and shoes still on. But, as I attempted to glide my way through the metal detector, I cringed as I heard the noise everyone in the terminal dreads most, an alarm.

While my Birkenstocks are undeniably comfy, it turns out they aren't exactly TSA-approved and my metal buckles had set off security. Now, I had to trod back, toss my shoes on the conveyor belt and barefooted (yep) go back through the checkpoint. What I considered my easiest pair of shoes turned out to be not-so-easy when it came to crunch time. 

As it turns out, there are lots of other shoes with hidden metal, apt to set off a metal detector. Take stilettos, for example; many have a metal rod in the heel, but it's tough to tell by simply looking at them. To avoid the germy possibility of striding barefoot through the airport, it's best to avoid anything that might set of the machines and instead stick to basic slide sandals or my footwear of choice, slip-on sneakers. And if you find yourself still needing to remove your shoes, make sure you have socks handy.

We were recently schooled on the dead giveaway of cheap skinny jeans, which inspired us to find out how to spot the signs that make another wardrobe essential look cheap: shoes. You can probably quickly tell when a pair of shoes feels cheap (hello, blisters), but being able to put your finger on exactly what makes them look cheap can be a little trickier. And because being able to spot warning signs of a cheap pair of shoes before you buy them is a very useful skill, we reached out to the designer of celebrity-favorite brand Dear Frances. (Bella Hadid, Emma Roberts, and Selena Gomez are fans.) Dear Frances Spirit Boots have reached cult status since their release in 2015, and the rest of the lineup is equally lust-worthy. 

Designer Jane Frances candidly shared with us her expert take on what makes shoes look cheap and what makes them look expensive. On the subject of cheap shoes, Frances said, "An expertly cut pattern is one of the most important processes of high-quality shoe-making, so a poorly cut pattern is an instant giveaway for cheaply made shoes." She added, "Cheap shoes will often fit too wide or at an unflattering point of the ankle, both signs that the pattern has been poorly designed. The pattern should hold your foot firmly without cutting too tight, so any pair that gapes in the wrong places, rubs your heels, or doesn't support your arch should be given a wide berth."

Now that you know what to avoid when choosing shoes, this is what Frances told us to seek out when choosing pricier-looking footwear: "When it comes to expensive shoes, you can't go past soft, supple leathers, with folds in all the right places. High-quality leathers will soften over time and mold beautifully to your foot, so they'll never be mistaken for cheap shoes!"

As 2016 begins to winds down, we can’t help but think about everything that’s possibly happened within the last 12 months. We imagine Jane Frances is feeling the same, as the British designer only launched stateside with her footwear brand, Dear Frances, less than a year ago. Since then, she’s already landed on the feet of Selena Gomez, Bella Hadid, Kendall Jenner, and so many more fashion girls that we’ve simply lost track.

More recently, in the midst of Frances’s efforts to launch her very first resort collection, we caught up with the designer to get the scoop from her about what makes her styles so loved. We sensed that it could have something to do with the brand’s penchant for sturdier heels and the cool offerings as far as colors and textures. Plus, with the Resort 17 designs currently available for preorder, we also suspected it’s tied to this British label’s ability to bring quirky, personal details to its work, namely visible dried flowers within the heels of the vacation-ready styles. But as we found out, Frances has some theories of her own—not to mention a lot of exciting room to grow.

WHO WHAT WEAR: Congrats on all your success in such a short amount of time! Which principles do you credit for the brand meteoric rise?

JANE FRANCES: Thank you! I’ve always stayed true to my instincts and to the aesthetic that comes most naturally to me, which is that of classic silhouettes with a focus on detail, texture, and tone. It’s important to find the balance of instinct versus influence, so I’m always conscious of maintaining our refined aesthetic and moving it forward with seasonal color palettes and textural details. Our collections are also about telling a story, creating a mood, and I love developing these stories through imagery and other visual representation.

WWW: Why do you think celebrities have been loving your designs? What are some personal favorite Dear Frances siting from this past year?

JF: It’s important to me that each of our designs be versatile, easy to wear, and easy to style. I think all of these things, combined with modern details, makes our shoes different and identifiable and offers a unique style, which celebrities and style influencers seem to love. My personal favorite moment still has to be Bella Hadid rocking her Spirit Boots in London, as she always does! And I would love to see Christy Turlington wear Dear Frances—she is elegant, intelligent, and a great muse of mine.

WWW: We’re loving the prominence of a stacked, thicker heel on your shoes. Why do you think this more comfortable, more walkable style is so popular right now?

JF: As our lives get busier, women are looking for more practical footwear options, which they can wear all day and through into night. As a result, there’s much more experimentation happening with block and midheight heels, and it’s certainly taken off in the past few seasons. I love working with this style! I wear block heels all the time, so it’s nice to design from a very personal point of view.

WWW: Tell us a bit about your first foray into resort.

JF: We had a lot of fun designing the resort collection! Resort was inspired by the European coast, a place I had spent a lot of time while planning the collection, and I was interested in experimenting with brighter, bolder colors than past seasons. You can see beautiful summer colors throughout, such as sea blues, corals, and sand. Many styles also took inspiration from my experiences on the coast, like hand-woven slides referenced from boater hats, tortoiseshell prints, natural beach grasses, and intricate coral designs. This season also features dried flower petals sealed into the heels of the Spirit Boots and new Eva Mules.

WWW: After such a killer first year, are there any exciting projects Dear Frances is working on in the future that you can share, like entering new categories or debuting new styles?

JF: We have so much more we want to do with shoes! So that remains our focus for now. However, the relaxed and uncomplicated style of Dear Frances certainly opens the label to other ventures and bags seem a natural fit … certainly a path we are open to exploring in the future.

Now that we've reached the tail end of summer, the time is approaching to retire our sandals and break out our collection of boots and booties. But first things first, we need to take stock of what we have and what we need for fall. On our must-have list: a trendy pair of velvet booties, or maybe something retro-inspired.

But, as excited as we may be to pick up a little something new, the start of a fresh season also means it's time to re-evaluate our past purchases. As one trend comes in, another goes out, which means it's time for a little spring (er, fall) cleaning. 

So we enlisted the help of Sara Gaspar, a data analyst for WGSN, to look into ankle boot trends over the past few months and compare them to last year. The results: There are plenty of block-heel boots to shop this season, while wedges have taken a decline. Sara also noted that styles like tasseled and velvet are spiking this year, so there's no better time than now to pick them up.

When it comes to what's out for fall, the wedge has taken a back seat to other styles. It's share of the market decreased from 11% to 8% since last year.

A major trend this year is block-heel booties, which are currently 31% of the market, compared with last year's 16%.
