Can you believe it's been close to two decades since Gemma Ward launched her modelling career? It certainly doesn't feel that way, but when you start to look closely at her achievements over the last 16 years, it's easy to see why time flew by so quickly. In the early days of her career, the model stormed international runways for brands including Prada, Calvin Klein, Alexander McQueen, and Vera Wang, and fronted campaigns for the likes of Balenciaga and Dior.

With a passion for acting since she was young, Ward eventually moved into the acting world before taking a few years away from the spotlight. In 2014, we were ecstatic when Ward returned to the limelight, where she's stayed firmly positioned over the last few years. Now, the model and actress is working with iconic Australian department store, David Jones. At the retailer's recent 'The Art of Living' Autumn / Winter 2019 showcase, we sat down with Ward to learn more about the early days of her career, and what message she has for young women who look up to her. 

What are some of your earliest memories of David Jones?

My first memories are walking in the show in Perth and then in Sydney with Jess [Gomes] and Nicole [Trunfio] and having a lot of fun. 

What excites you about partnering with David Jones?

David Jones is the pinnacle of Australian fashion and I suppose that's why I am excited to work with them this time around! I was excited to go to Tasmania and MONA, and I am really excited about this whole concept of the 'art of living' and embracing all of these different elements like entertainment and wellness, as well as fashion.

What are some of your favourite David Jones brands?

I love Camilla and Marc, Scanlan Theodore, Manning Cartell. I love Bassike, P.E Nation and obviously apart from the Australian brands, I love looking to international designers. I have been liking a lot of the newer brands, especially Rixo London. 

What are some of your proudest and career defining moments?

I feel really honoured to have been apart of the Alexander McQueen period of creative explosion at the time when Lee [the brand's fashion designer] was making such incredible performance art and such incredible museum worthy pieces for his runway shows. I have also felt really honoured to work with Miuccia Prada because I adore her and think she is a very inspiring woman. My shoots with Calvin Klein, working with Irving Penn and Steven Meisel are also highlights.

How did you shake self doubt at the start of your career?

It wasn't easy, I had a lot of people tell me that I looked really unusual and had some mean things to say especially in the public realm which just makes it even worse than just taunting at school. I think I kind of dealt with it by being encouraged by the people that I was working with and the people I love and know, my family, my close friends and my agents helped me work through that kind of stuff and helped me realise that its not really that big of a deal for your career. 

What are some of the biggest misconceptions about what you do?

That it's super easy!

Your career has seen a second life what have you learnt for the second time around?

I'm learning more of the art of living [laughs], I'm really learning how to balance all the aspects that I have now in my life, when I first started modelling I was really interested in fashion and I loved working with the people that I was working with and creating images, but now I really also appreciate the structures that I have in place to keep my health in check, I love meditating I love kick boxing, I love cooking and eating healthy.

Now that I've got children, it's nice to come home to that kind of energy after a day of work and travel and I feel like nowadays I have a lot more things that I do in my off time and in my private life. I feel like I have a more rich, diverse life now.

Lastly, what is your message for young women who look up to you and aspire to a similar career story?

There's no rush really, I feel like there's a big kind of pressure to churn out a lot of work really quickly when you're really young, but I think the better way to do it is to pace yourself and focus on the long game—so that's what I would say!

We're already one month into 2019, and autumn's biggest trends are really starting to emerge. David Jones, Australia's (and the world's!) oldest department store hosted fashion's biggest names in Hobart, to present 'The Art of Living' at MONA, a two-day immersive experience of the David Jones brand. It's A/W 19 fashion collection was presented as 'The Art of Fashion' and we were on the ground to dissect every trend to hit the runway.

As it turns out, chances are you already have many of the major trends lurking in your wardrobe. You just need to give them a 2019 spin to make them feel a little more "fashion".

Minimal, polished, unexpected. These are the words we'd use to describe the aesthetic of Bodice Studio, an Indian label that has just launched in Australia. Designed by New Delhi-based Ruchika Sachdeva, each piece is an investment that would set your wardrobe apart for years to come. But it's not only the chic colours, cuts and shapes of Bodice Studio's pieces that has drawn us to the brand: It's the story of craftmanship and sustainability behind each one.

Bodice Studio first came to our attention earlier this year when it won the 2018 International Woolmark Prize for innovation in the use of Merino wool. The brand has a distinct emphasis on craftmanship, as each piece is created by local artisans, hand loomers and hand weavers in the Himalayas and villages in India. It also looks to up-cycle existing fabrics, and develop new materials to keep their manufacturing process as sustainable as possible.

Sachdeva's designs debuted in Australia at the David Jones spring summer 2018 showcase last week, and were introduced to the local fashion industry at an event at Parlour X yesterday. The collection is now stocked at the aforementioned two retailers, and Sachdeva says she is "thrilled and indeed very honoured" to be accepted into the Australian market. 

Below, we spoke to Sachdeva to find out the inspiration behind Bodice Studio pieces, and which designs we should start shopping this spring.

Welcome to Australia! What do you think of the style here?

It’s amazing. There are so many Australian women who seem to get the balance between being quite pared-back and classic, but adding a twist that pushes the envelope just right. That’s very in tune with the Bodice Studio approach to immaculately tailored classics that have unexpected details. I love the style of women like Amanda Shadforth, Eva Galambos and Pip Edwards.

Which Bodice pieces do you think will be key looks for spring?

The Bodice Studio Overlap Tie Pleat Dress ($1165) is both functional and versatile for spring, with front coconut shell button fastenings and a wrap skirt with contrasting pleats which have been bonded by hand at the sides. Style with an ankle boot or sandal for transitional seasons.

Where do you source inspiration for your designs? 

Modernist Indian architecture, the geometry of Nasreen Mohamedi’s line drawings, and the colours of India. I love to travel and find many inspirations whilst encountering new people and places.

As an India-based brand, how does Indian culture affect your design aesthetic?

As a designer in India, one is incredibly lucky to be surrounded by such an incredible heritage of artisanal craft skills and textiles. There is so much, often too much, and it takes great rigor and focus to create something more refined that speaks the essence of Indian heritage but which is also relevant to contemporary global fashion markets.

Why is sustainability so important to you?

Because it’s so important to recognise the tipping point we are at right now with global warming. As designers, we have so much potential to effect positive solutions to how clothes impact our environment in negative or positive ways. Why not be part of the solution rather than adding to the problem?

In what ways do you ensure your brand is sustainable and/or ethical?

Firstly, we find ways to support traditional artisans in sustainable, meaningful ways. Secondly, we train our tailors and really invest time, money and effort in enhancing their skills so they have better earning opportunities which impacts positively in their families and communities. Thirdly, we are committed to sourcing from sustainable, renewable sources such as wool, and using new technologies for dyeing and recycling to minimise or eliminate negative impacts on the ecology.

While the David Jones showcase always gets us excited about the next up-and-coming runway trends, it also guarantees a stellar red carpet every year. The spring summer launch took place in Sydney last night and brought together all of Australia's most fashionable people under one roof. 

David Jones's newest ambassador, Victoria Lee, was a true highlight, wearing a black plunging gown, while Jessica Gomes opted for a white off-the-shoulder look. The red carpet also played host to Adut Akech, Elle Ferguson and Isabel Lucas, who all stole the spotlight. The David Jones runway show marks a change in the seasons every year. Although still held in winter, the spring summer showcase really gets us thinking about the warmer months and what we're going to be wearing come spring. It's a time to forget about coat shopping, and start dreaming up our perfect warm-weather wardrobe.

Held in Sydney's Fox Studios last night, the David Jones SS18 runway showcased the best upcoming trends, that we'll all be wearing very soon. Modelled by David Jones ambassadors Victoria Lee and Jessica Gomes, as well as local star Adut Akech, the pieces featured spanned from activewear to resort wear, Spring Racing, and everyday office attire.

In terms of the Spring Racing looks, it's clear that the trend this year will be midi-length cocktail dresses, incorporating feminine silhouettes and bold colour-blocking. For resort wear, it's all about neutral linens, wide leg pants and draped shirts. 

One surprising trend was the Western-inspired looks. It seems we're taking the cowboy boot trend of winter into the next season with a lot of earthy-toned and soft-pink pieces, mixed with fringed crochet and beadwork. With this trend it's all about exotic prints, jungle flora and fauna, and a 1980s vibe.

Our overall favourite piece? It was the the khaki green dress by Bianca Spender, as seen below on Jessica Gomes. We can't wait to get our hands on this and wear it to the races next season. Last night, Sydney’s most fashionable people gathered for David Jones’ A/W 18 show. Fitting with the theme of the campaign, “Take the Leap”, the presentation was anything but boring. Starring Australian supermodel, Victoria Lee, the show definitely got us excited for the trends that we’re about to see as the cooler weather rolls around. Modelled by the likes of Mali Koopman, Jenella Powell, and Jessica Gomes, the styles we’re about to be wearing are definitely a departure from winter seasons past.

Rather than neutral blacks and greys that are common in autumn and winter designs, the show was punctuated by bright colours and playful hemlines. Also, it looks like bold, jewel-toned pieces are on the horizon, adding a new flair to cold-weather apparel.

In addition, we can expect to see some classic, winter staples get an update. Think of your favourite winter essentials, but reinterpreted. Uniquely cut suits, blouses, and trousers are all about to be big. We can also expect that in the upcoming season fun prints and bold accessories will also be incorporated into typical winter outfits, for a new take on dressing for dreary days.

One last groundbreaking trend worth mentioning? Florals… for winter. With dark colours and exotic prints, this trend stands apart from its springtime counterpart. Giving off a more sophisticated aura, we can expect to see florals transition away from a print reserved for summer picnic sundresses, as it becomes a statement-making base for cocktail dresses and work-wear alike.

When pondering our Australian exports who have showcased the beauty and talent that is produced on our home soil, one gem who springs to mind first is Jessica Gomes. Launching her career as a fresh-faced 17-year-old, even though she boasts a porcelain complexion and envy-eliciting cheekbones, the Perth-born beauty is no stranger to the harsh judgement that can come from the fashion industry, once telling Vogue Australia: "When I first started, it was rare [being part-Chinese] because I just wanted to work at home and I didn’t really feel like travelling—I was so young... I did get frustrated, but I just ended up going to Asia first which was incredible.” But it was the announcement of the revered title as a David Jones ambassador in 2013 that gave her a chance to bring diversity to the Australian catwalk, taking on a position that once feel to international faces, such as Miranda Kerr and Megan Gale.

Now, Gomes is also an entrepreneur of the fast-growing beauty brand, Equal Beauty, and her natural nose for business, and long-standing influence (she's already been in the industry for 15 years) proves that while there's no doubt she’s been genetically blessed, she’s also got the brains and guts to back it up. Only a few hours before the David Jones A/W18 show, we sat down with Gomes to chat about diversity in her industry, being yourself and what she wears to feel powerful. Read on to see what she has to say.

WHO WHAT WEAR: What items are you most excited to wear for autumn and winter this year?

JESSICA GOMES: Definitely a power suit. I think they are definitely trending this season. Especially with women’s empowerment being a big theme this year, I really like to wear a strong power suit to a meeting too. Rebecca Vallance and Camilla and Marc are both doing some great suits this season. [When I have an important meeting] I’ll usually wear a blazer and a T-shirt, or a full suit. I just feel more comfortable and free. And I feel more empowered and strong. I think this David Jones campaign is all about taking a leap and being your best self and and being fearless, so I definitely think fashion can influence that.

WWW: What does diversity in the modelling industry mean to you?

JG: It’s very important to me. I think it’s amazing that David Jones are using diversity in its fashion show. I mean from all ages to different heritages, I think it’s really important that we represent the world, equally. I mean, my story is that I am Portuguese, Chinese, but also Australian, so for me that was always something that I grew up knowing, and it was always something that’s been on my radar.

WWW: How have you seen shifts and changes towards diversity?

JG: When I became the face of David Jones that was a huge shift, especially for Australia. I feel like in my position I could help change the path of Australian fashion and it was great to help pave the way for other diverse models. So that was fantastic. But I think now, it’s 2018 and we’re seeing a lot more different groups of people being embraced by all kids of industries, even women, we’re being embraced more in different industries.

WWW: How are you incorporating diversity into your beauty brand?

JG: I guess it’s just that it’s always been for everyone. I’m not just creating a box, I’m leaving it open. Especially in the beauty and fashion industry, I think that there’s room for everyone and we should be embracing different cultures and people, because it’s more exciting.

WWW: How do you juggle and find balance between modelling and your entrepreneurial career?

JG: It’s been really great, but equally intense. I really love what I do and I think it’s all about balance. I love keeping busy, and they are all my passion projects, so it gives me so much energy. I highly recommend for any person wanting to start their own business to just do it because it can be hard, but also very rewarding.

WWW: What’s been your biggest lesson you’ve learnt since launching Equal Beauty so far?

JG: You’ve definitely got to know who you can trust. Also, just doing it, you’ve really just got to get into action.

Within Australian fashion, there's nothing quite like a David Jones season launch and runway to capture the hearts (and wallets) of both the industry and keen shoppers around the country. Tonight was no exception, with Sydney's fashion elite coming together for the store's much anticipated spring/summer 2017 fashion show and designer showcase. Six months ago Karlie Kloss graced the stage to kick off the autumn/winter 2017 show, but this season, homegrown David Jones ambassadors Jesinta Franklin and Jessica Gomes were tasked with taking the lead.

So what will we be wearing this spring and summer? Turns out, the top trend from the runway was one we're already wearing. Vibrant red. We chatted with Franklin ahead of the show about the fresh new colour trend, and she told us she's low-key obsessed: "I can't wait to wear the brightest shades of red next season—I will be incorporating it into my beauty look with a cherry lip and nails, too." When we heard the news that supermodel Karlie Kloss would be walking in the David Jones Autumn/Winter 2017 show, it’s safe to say we were more excited than ever to attend the retail giant’s bi-annual fashion event. Add to that a guest list packed with Sydney’s fashion elite—think Lara Worthington, Pia Miller, Carissa Walford, Ksenija Lukich, Mimi Elashiry, Brooke Testoni—and it was a night not to be missed.

The much-anticipated show saw Kloss open in New Guard Australian designer Macgraw and DJs ambassadors Jessica Gomes, Jesinta Franklin and Jason Dundas lead 46 of Australia’s top models, including Bridget Malcolm and Charlee Fraser, on the catwalk outside Sydney’s iconic St Mary’s Cathedral.

Models showcased the best of the new season from David Jones with a stellar line-up of local and international designers, including Romance Was Born, Zimmermann, Ginger and Smart, Christopher Esber, Bassike, Dion Lee, Carla Zampatti, Alice McCall, Lover, Celine, Balenciaga, Christopher Kane, Alexander McQueen, Saint Laurent, Valentino and Alexander Wang. 

The dramatic finale segment saw bridal showcased on the Collections Launch runway for the first time, with dresses from Reem Acra and Self Portrait to Oscar de la Renta and Monique Lhuillier, amongst others, and a special tribute to George Michael as models walked to his 1990 hit 'Freedom' to close the phenomenal show.

We must have made a really good impression on Karlie Kloss when she was visiting Australia at the end of last year. The Victoria’s Secret model was in Sydney for the first time in December 2016, to shoot the David Jones A/W 17 campaign and she’s already set to make a return. It’s just been announced that Kloss will walk the department store’s runway showcase on February 1. This will be the first time Kloss has walked a runway in Australia, joining David Jones ambassadors Jessica Gomes and Jesinta Franklin. It’ll make for one memorable runway, so be sure to keep an eye on Who What Wear Australia as we’ll be bringing you every single detail from the show. 

The Daily Telegraph reports that the showcase will take place in the forecourt at St Mary’s Cathedral, meaning it’s shifting from its usual location (Level Seven at David Jones Elizabeth St), and it will have a fresh and exciting vibe.

After a quick chat before the David Jones A/W 16 fashion launch, we had to ask when her style started to evolve. The Australian model is candid and refreshing when reflecting on the past and talking about when she really started to get into her fashion groove.

Who What Wear Australia: How has your personal style evolved?

Jesinta Campbell: It’s evolved so much! I wish everything prior to 2015 could be erased!

WWW: What happened in 2015?

JC: I got an allowance at David Jones [laughs]! No, I think what happens is, as you get older, you get more comfortable in your own skin—you know what works and what doesn’t work and you don’t get so caught up in trends. You get to know your body better and know what suits you. If what you’re wearing is forced, it doesn’t look good. That’s what I go by. If I put something on and I feel comfortable, then I know it’s going to look good.

WWW: What has been your game-changing fashion moment?

JC: I feel like I really started to get into my groove this exact time last year, A/W 15. I wore a blue Dion Lee dress and I feel like after that, I started making good fashion decisions.

WWW: If you only make one splurge for autumn, what should it be?

JC: A long coat. There’s an amazing floor length Camilla and Marc coat with gold buttons that I'd buy. Gigi Hadid and Kendall Jenner keep wearing them and it’s such a cool look. 

WWW: Who are your favourite Australian designers?

JC: At the moment (and by the way this is so hard, I’m only going to pick three), Camilla and Marc’s A/W 16 collection is next level and I’m obsessed. I love Christopher Esber too, and Bec & Bridge for everyday wear. I have a cute cut-out red dress and it has little gold stars all over it. It’s quite short, but I can wear it with tan strappy sandals, thigh-high boots, or biker boots. That’s three outfits right there with one dress!

WWW: What will you be wearing on Valentine’s Day?

JC: Oh! Um... I don’t know, lingerie? [Laughs] I’ll just go out to dinner and I’ll probably wear my black Ellery flares and an off-the-shoulder top.

In February, David Jones presented it’s A/W 16 launch—signalling the start of the new season. Fashion insiders forgot all about their summer essentials and started to plan ahead for the cooler months. Tonight, DJ’s will present S/S 17, so we’re looking back at least season’s show, to see if we actually wore the trends we saw on the runway.

So what did we see Jessica Gomes, Jesinta Campbell, and Montana Cox (amongst a host of other models) wear on the runway? The ’70s was unsurprisingly the major trend, and boy did they hit the nail on the head. All season we’ve been obsessed with flared sleeves, soft suedes, paisley print, and floaty dresses. Merchandise director Donna Player explained at the time “artisanal textures and quirky combinations help capture the authentic mood of the '70s with the return of timeless retro colours and loose, free-spirited shapes”.

Looks like DJ’s was correct, so we can’t wait to see what the department store has on offer for tonight. Stay tuned and we’ll bring you the ultimate runway report and best looks.
