Cameli, 28, is the latest fresh face to step into the role of BookTok boyfriend—a title more desirable than ever as New York Times best sellers like Heated Rivalry and Every Summer After continue to seep onto the small screen. Joining the ranks of Connor Storrie, Hudson Williams, and Christopher Briney, the star has seen how quickly internet fandom can flip one's life on its head. But rest assured, the tall, dark, and handsome brunette from Chicagoland is up for the challenge.

Since giving dedicated book fans the physical manifestation of the womanizing collegiate hockey star Garrett Graham—one half of the lead couple in Off Campus season 1, accompanied by Ella Bright as Hannah Wells—Cameli's career has shifted into high gear. With the show's massive success (Amazon Prime Video reported a record-breaking viewership of 36 million streams within its first 12 days, according to Variety) came magazine spreads, first pitches at Chicago White Sox games, and now beauty campaigns. Remember those umber, scene-stealing curls we talked about earlier? Yeah, they landed their own Tresemmé deal.

Ahead, Cameli fills Who What Wear in on life after the show's splashy debut, the shrouded happenings of season 2, his future career goals, and his simple routine for those signature curls.

I've seen pictures of you in your high school football jersey with some not-curly hair—how and when did you learn to embrace your natural texture?

I didn't have a natural curl until later in high school—maybe around 18. I started growing it out more. It started getting wavy, and then I would cut it down and grow it out, and it just kept getting curlier.

Growing up, my hair was poker straight, so there was a whole period of time that I suddenly had curly hair and could not figure it out for the life of me, which is why I'm really happy to have Tresemmé on my side today. They make it so easy, so I don't really have to think about it. I just go in with their three new products in the Bouncy Curls line, and it takes no time at all. I can just go about my day. But I've struggled—learning the curly-hair [routine] later in life with no help was difficult.

We just spoke with your costar Stephen Kalyn (Dean Di Laurentis) about season 2. How is filming going so far?

It's great! We're having so much fun. We're all very busy, and we're just really proud of the show. We're working on episodes 3 and 4 right now, and these scripts are really impressive. It's just nice to be back with everybody—the cast, the crew, and our creators. It's been a blast. We love shooting the show.

Kalyn told me that you once called him on a day off just to tell him about your high school football experience.

Oh, I call him randomly every single day, and he calls me too! We talk all the time; we just get along so well. He's from the suburbs of Toronto. I'm from the suburbs of Chicago. We have similar trajectories and stories. We're the same age, we started acting at the same time, and obviously, this show happened to us together. But yeah, I gave a 30-minute soliloquy about my high school football team. He was like, "Okay," and honestly, I've heard him talk about hockey and his hockey teams for hours on end, so whatever!

That's how friendship works! How does this season—both the filming process and show itself—feel different than season 1?

It doesn't really feel all that different. It's almost the same crew, so it was kind of like we took a break and came back home, you know?

Obviously, we're aware of the attention the show has gotten, but that doesn't really affect us while we're working, so the days on set feel very familiar. It almost feels like no time passed at all between season 1 and season 2, which has been really nice. I'd say the biggest difference is that when we're shooting on location, there are more [fans] around.

If you could describe season 2 in three words, what would they be?

Ensemble, love, and friendship. I haven't had time to think of a good three yet, but those three are definitely in there—lemme tell ya.

They definitely count. It must have been nice to jump back into filming after such a crazy press run of a summer.

It was. It was so nice to have work and to be all together right after the press run and the release of the show. We got to come back into our bubble. For me—and I think for them too—having work is a real privilege.

How does it feel to have your career explode the way it did this summer—to not only be in such a famous role but to also land campaigns with brands like Tresemmé?

It's been really interesting. I think a lot of actors hope for the audience that we've garnered now. I feel really honored to have new fans of my work. I'm really grateful for the opportunity that it's presented me—when it comes to my next jobs, when it comes to partnering with Tresemmé and their great line of Bouncy Curls products, and getting to talk about my hair. It's really nice, and it's been an adjustment, but it's been cool. [But] my day-to-day is pretty much the same. All the things I'm seeing with my eyes are no different.

Since you've been acting for a minute now, is there a beauty hack that you learned on set that changed the way you get ready?

Eye patches go a long way for me. I'm a tired boy most of the time, so letting those soak in is totally cool. When it comes to my hair, turning my head upside down and scrunching is essential to getting those curls right. You've got to do your hair upside down a lot of the time.

And if I want my hair to look good, I usually have to use a diffuser somewhere in the process. If I want to completely air-dry my curls, they end up looking incredible, but that takes so much time. Once you get the Defining Cream in there and put a little mousse in, give it that shape, then go in with the diffuser, and set it and forget it, it's great.

I know you're busy shooting Off Campus until early fall, but do you have any other upcoming projects that you can share with us?

I do, but not [ones] that I can share. There's some really fun stuff that I'm looking at with my team right now, and hopefully, we'll get season 3 for Off Campus. In the time between, I'm really looking forward to going to work and shooting some features. There's some fun stuff I can't say, but I'm really just excited to be on set more. I want to spend all my time on set—literally all my time. So hopefully, that's what I'll get to do.

I'm curious—do you guys see the TikTok edits? Are you sending funny comments to each other? Can you laugh at everything?

We definitely can laugh at it. I'm not on TikTok. I'm not on the internet, really, unless it's, like, woodworking videos on YouTube. But there are a lot of pink-helmet videos that go around that we really enjoy. People have really given the pink helmet the life that it's deserved online. I've seen some of the edits of the show, and a lot of them are extremely impressive, [even] just from an editing standpoint. I've seen plenty of it. It's all fun, weird, and cool. It's just wild, honestly.

There's been a lot happening this summer. Between the World Cup, your breakout show, and filming, there's a lot to obsess over. What are you obsessed with right now?

I'm so predictable: It's Chicago White Sox baseball. The Cubs and the Sox are both doing really well right now. There's a lot of good baseball happening on the South Side. I'm obsessed with driving my car. I bought this 1994 Toyota Land Cruiser from Japan. It's this little diesel engine with four-wheel drive, and I love driving it so much. Vancouver is a gorgeous place to drive around, and I'm also obsessed with getting eight hours of sleep whenever possible.

I hear you guys are up early doing hockey practices!

Yeah, we do a lot of boot camps. We are in the throes of filming right now, so when we're shooting, we're on the ice for 12 to 16 hours, which ends up really hurting your feet but being good practice.

The shooting schedule, on top of other fun stuff we have going on outside the show, keeps us pretty busy, so when I know I have a night when I can get eight hours of sleep, I get so excited. I'll have, like, 100 dreams and try to write them all down in the morning.

Speaking of dreams, your life is opening up in big ways these days. What are some new personal and career goals that you've set for yourself?

I really want to wear multiple hats at some point as a filmmaker. I never really knew when the next step toward directing would be, and right now, I'm realizing that if that's going to happen, it won't be in a way that I foresee. … I really just want to go to work as an actor, build out a diverse body of work, play unpredictable characters, and work in different genres and arenas, so right now, my vision is honestly the same as it's always been. I want to do things that are different from the others that I've done.

I've done a decent amount of comedy television now, and I've done some genre films, some drama. I've played in this YA space a couple of times, and I really just want to protect the vision of doing different things and work with cool filmmakers that I like. It's a pretty broad goal, but my goal is just to work. I really love being on set, so that's where I want to be.

This limits the amount of stress applied to delicate edges and, therefore, lowers the risk of breakage. But the best part? This style is versatile and can be worn in many patterns while still protecting your natural hair underneath.

3. Boho Braids

Boho braids look elegant at any time of the year, but they especially come into their own in the summer. Not a fan of braids? Well, Marley twists are a protective style that will give you a fuller, more natural-looking finish. By twisting the hair rather than braiding it, this hairstyle reduces the tension on the scalp, minimising breakage and split ends. My personal favourite style, French curl braids, combines your typical knotless braided sections with elegant curled ends, creating a chic protective hairstyle that's equally as stylish as it is practical. I have no problem saying that I’m picky when it comes to hair products. It’s not necessarily by choice either—my hair is generally hard to please, and after a long journey, it’s something I’ve come to accept. I have type-4, low-porosity coils that get extremely dry and brittle if I don’t use the correct products. Unsurprisingly, I discovered this through trial and error. I realized that, much to my frustration, most products just weren’t working for me because they featured ingredients like coconut oil (a huge no-no for low-porosity hair), protein (too much can make your hair dry if you don’t need it), and silicones. Those ingredients don’t work at all for my already-dry hair, but sadly, most hair products (even ones for curls) feature them.

Just when I was about to give up hope that anything would work well for my hair long-term, Olaplex came in and saved the day. I’ve always been a fan of Olaplex’s formulas, but my only issue with the original Bond Maintenance system was that it just needed to offer a bit more hydration for my bone-dry hair. Apparently, the hair gods were listening when I silently prayed for a curl collection because, recently, the brand came through.

Olaplex now offers the No. 5 Curl Bond Shaper collection, and it’s everything I’ve ever dreamed of. I went in with pretty low expectations considering my hair is so picky, but the formulators at Olaplex really know what they’re doing. I finally feel seen and like someone out there in the formula room gets my hair type. The collection is perfection bottled, and I had to share all my thoughts about it below.

Let’s start with the shampoo in this collection. I wash my hair twice a week to prevent buildup, and it’s hard to find one that properly cleanses without stripping my dry hair. This one strikes the perfect balance. It’s designed to have enough kick that it removes buildup and excess oil while also adding hydration to curls and reducing breakage and frizz, all while detangling. I was really impressed with the detangling aspect. Normally, shampoos don’t really do that for me because my hair is dry, but this one detangled so quickly I was almost in a state of shock. That sounds dramatic, but when you use literally every shampoo under the sun that claims it will do the same and you end up disappointed, it’s a big deal when it actually happens.

The shampoo is excellent, but that’s only the beginning with this collection. These formulas are specifically designed not to create protein or silicone buildup, which can dry out the hair massively. Again, I feel seen. Instead, it does contain what the brand calls 3D Bond Shaper technology, which builds disulfide bonds to repair, strengthen, and add definition to curls. Using the conditioner is where the real magic happens.

It features much of the same technology as the shampoo but also contains a host of natural oils to add softness and definition along with a silicone alternative derived from squalene-rich olive oil for enhanced slip. I was initially a tad worried about this because I’ve used other conditioners that contain silicone alternatives that did not sit well, but once again, I was proven wrong. This formula is so thoughtful and well-developed for tricky hair types. It actually does everything it promises, and I feel like my hair will only get better over time.

I’ve been using this system for over a month now. I condition my hair almost every day because it’s so dry and I’ve noticed that my curls have so much more definition and it doesn’t knot up like it used to. That alone is genuinely miraculous when you have hair like mine. Everything else I’ve used previously has just been okay. I honestly just accepted that my results would just never look like the models’ many of these products are advertised on, but for the first time, I actually feel like a system has made a genuine and noticeable difference in my hair. It’s stronger, I find less hair in my brush every day, and it’s so much softer and more manageable.

Sometimes, you don’t know what your hair is missing or could truly look like until you find those perfect products. To say I’m thrilled with this collection is an understatement. Olaplex has proved, once again, why it is *that girl* in the haircare industry.

The best thing about summer hair trends is that they aren't really all that rigid—literally and figuratively. We tend to see lots of airy, textured silhouettes on the rise, yet the trends themselves also aren't too stringent. As celebrity hairstylist Sky Kim shares, "Summer always brings hair back to freedom. It’s less structured, more expressive." As we shed our winter layers for linen sets and breezy slips, hair becomes looser, more lived-in—especially in 2026, when embracing piece-y movement is very much en vogue.

"2025 was sleek, minimal, and controlled. 2026 is expressive, textural, and a little rebellious in a wearable way," adds Kim. As such, we're seeing polished cuts and styles give way to bolder (yet still natural) iterations, all of which you can find when you scroll ahead.

Beauty trends have a funny way of cycling in and out of the spotlight, so you might very well see them again once fall rolls back around. Out: Blunt Bobs | In: Lived-In Layers

If you sported a chin-skimming crop last summer, you're not alone. It was arguably the year of the bob—from voluminous "Riviera" bobs to sleek Prada" bobs to '60s-inspired "flipped" bobs—and if you, too, committed to the shorter cut, you're probably currently residing in lob territory. As you encompass the grow-out period, try leaning into soft movement and texture (such as airy layers) as opposed to blunt bobs.

Celebrity hairstylist Reece Walker agrees: "Many clients who had strong blunt bobs are now growing them out and really embracing hair that feels less structured and more lived-in," he shares. Consider it the pendulum swing from bold, sophisticated cuts to styles with more of an "undone" feel.

Out: Solid Cool Tones | In: Warmth and Dimension

"Flat, one-note hair colour is fading, especially overly cool, ashy tones that don’t reflect light," says Kim. "Instead, people are leaning into dimension and natural undertones. Think warm blondes, reds that enhance what’s already in your hair, and brunettes with subtle tonal ribbons. It’s very reflective, very alive—colour that shifts in the light rather than sitting flat." Walker echoes her declaration, adding that dimension in colour is going to be huge. "Less flat, solid colour and more depth and movement," he notes.

Dakota Johnson is the perfect example, as she recently transformed her rich brunette length to a dimensional dirty blonde at this year's Time 100 gala. It's the first time in years she switched up her go-to shade, so that's when you know the colour trend has legs. Time this as your sign to book in for some balayage.

Out: Blended Curtain Bangs | In: "Bratty" Bangs

Long curtain bangs are A+ for those who aren't necessarily ready to commit to the bang life, but in summer 2026, there's little room for middle ground. "Soft, overly blended curtain bangs are out," Kim asserts. Instead? A bold, "bratty" side bang reigns supreme. "It’s shorter, slightly choppier and more intentional. It sits higher, hits around the cheekbone or brow, and feels a little undone in a way that gives attitude rather than softness," she adds. "It’s less about perfectly feathered face framing and more about creating shape and edge."

Out: Subtle Tones | In: Expressive Colour

While haircuts are becoming increasingly more lived-in, "Colour is where it gets exciting," notes Kim. "We’re seeing a move toward dimensional, expressive colour, similar to that Alyssa Liu energy where it feels bold and wild." You don't necessarily have to commit to a halo hair colour like Liu, but for those craving more of a summer statement, consider this your sign to embrace high-contrast (dare I say ombré?) hair. "I think the drastic dual tones are coming back, like Billie Eilish’s green hair roots, dark tips, etc.," adds Kim.

Out: Glassy Slick-Backs | In: Textured Updos

Allow me to clarify: a slick-back will never truly fall out of favour. But stylists can't ignore the onslaught of lived-in, piece-y updos that just feel unrestricted. Shares Kim, "2025 felt very controlled, sleek, polished, and almost uniform—a lot of glass hair, tight finishes, and minimal variation. 2026 is breaking that open. There’s more personality, more texture, and more confidence in letting hair feel lived-in." Again, slick-backs will never be fully "out," but they are becoming less helmet-like. "Even when the look is polished, it’s not rigid. It’s less about perfection and more about identity," Kim adds.

Out: Tucked Bobs | In: Tucked Bixies

Remember when the tucked bob (aka a bob secured behind one or both ears) became all the buzz? We're starting to see a similar style take shape this summer, but it's a tad shorter, kissing the nape of the neck instead of the tops of the shoulders. Celebs like Gracie Abrams, Carey Mulligan, and Olandria Carthen (pictured above) have all embraced the chic tucked pixie cut, choosing to tuck their pixie behind just one ear to show off their bone structure. That said, you could also clip the pieces away using a subtle bobby pin or bold hair accessory. Artist's choice!

Out: Bombshell Blowouts | In: "C" Curls

Like classic slick-backs, bouncy, bombshell blowouts will never completely go away. Feel free to enjoy your '90s style all summer long, but if you want to embrace the new It-girl blowout, try your hand at softer "C" curls. "It’s a classic French blowout but with a nice bend and 'C' shape at the ends," explains celebrity hairstylist Dimitris Giannetos, who recently created the look for Gigi Hadid. "Instead of a flat-ironed straight hair look, this is a beautiful blowout with a gorgeous bend."

As you encompass the grow-out period, try leaning into soft movement and texture (such as airy layers) as opposed to blunt edges.

It sits higher, hits around the cheekbone or brow, and feels a little undone in a way that gives attitude rather than softness," she adds. "It’s less about perfectly feathered face framing and more about creating shape and edge."

While haircuts are becoming increasingly more lived-in, "Color is where it gets exciting," notes Kim. "We’re seeing a move toward dimensional, expressive color, similar to that Alyssa Liu energy where it feels bold and wild." Shares Kim, "Twenty twenty-five felt very controlled, sleek, polished, and almost uniform—a lot of glass hair, tight finishes, and minimal variation. 2026 is breaking that open. There’s more personality, more texture, and more confidence in letting hair feel lived-in." Again, slick-backs will never be fully "out," but they are becoming less helmet-like. "Even when the look is polished, it’s not rigid. It’s less about perfection and more about identity," Kim adds.

We're starting to see a similar style take shape this summer, but it's a tad shorter, kissing the nape of the neck instead of the tops of the shoulders. “The longer your hair, the higher the maintenance” is something we’ve all probably heard when considering whether or not we should opt for a bob. But I have to admit that as someone with Afro hair, I’ve always been under the impression that getting a bob would be more stress it’s worth.

The truth? Even the shortest of haircuts still requires a lot of upkeep, something that I’m sure low-maintenance girls like myself are heartbroken to hear. The key lies in tailoring the cut to your curl pattern, density, shrinkage and how you like to wear your hair day to day. A good bob should work with your texture, not against it", says Mensah.

Tips for Getting a Bob with Afro Hair

• Book a consultation first and foremost so that you can speak to your stylist before doing anything. Understand the look you want to achieve, and talk through how your stylist will approach it. A lot can be uncovered in that conversation.
• Bring reference images to help communicate shape, fullness, length and finish, while giving your stylist something tangible to respond to. Come open-minded too, as the right bob should suit both your texture and your features.
• Wear your hair as you usually wear it so your stylist understands its natural behaviour. Talk about shrinkage, as a curly bob and a stretched bob can sit very differently. Be honest about maintenance, too. If you want ease, say so. If you enjoy styling, that opens up other possibilities.
• Face shape, neckline and the experience of the stylist all matter. A well-cut bob should frame you beautifully, and textured hair deserves someone who understands how to cut for shape.

I've had to deal with a good handful of challenges throughout my life with my curly hair. Learning how to manage it is a challenge in itself, but there are also the typical concerns that are relatively common for the majority of people with hair like mine. This includes breakage, split ends, single-strand knots (also known as fairy knots), dullness, dryness, and of course frizz.

There have been plenty of times where I completely switched up my washday plans because I know it's going to be either very humid or rainy out. Sometimes, that means doing some kind of treatment and keeping my hair in a protective style. Other times, that means changing my washday schedule so I can reap the benefits of good weather. Still, there are some occasions where, regardless of the rain or humidity, I have to wear my hair down. At that point, I know I have to put in as much effort as possible to keep frizz under control.

Typically, I prep for a day like this by making sure I'm really hydrating my curls with a good leave-in conditioner, curl cream, and gel that will lock things in place. How I Used Ouidad's Advanced Climate Control Anti-Frizz Conditioner

I started off the way I typically do during a washday by sectioning my hair into three parts. When I tested this conditioner, I was coming off of a few days of heavy styling, so I started with the Pattern Cleansing Shampoo before going in with the Hydration Shampoo With Aloe & Honey to really give my scalp a reset. After rinsing, I applied the Advanced Climate Control Anti-Frizz Conditioner section by section while also detangling my hair. After getting all of the knots out, I rinsed again and proceeded with styling.

To style my hair, I went with my go-to rainy-day lineup. First I went applies the Pattern Leave-In Conditioner for Curls & Coils and Styling Cream for Curly & Coily Hair followed by the Nexxus Climate Control Gel Cream for the extra shine and definition. I typically don't use a diffuser or any other heat tool unless I'm at the salon, so I allowed my hair to air-dry throughout the day.

The Results

There were some clear pros and cons to using this formula. For starters, it smells very similar to the kind of high-quality products you would use at the hair salon. It wasn't overwhelming, and it got me compliments all day long. It also made my hair really soft, which is not easily achievable given my natural texture.

Unfortunately, my hair didn't soak up this conditioner the way I hoped it would, so my curls didn't get the immediate definition I tend to have right after a wash. It also took a lot of product to do just one wash because of how thick my hair is. But after styling, I felt like everything came together very seamlessly without having to do extra detangling (huge win).

Is the Ouidad Advanced Climate Control Anti-Frizz Conditioner Worth It?

Overall, I do think this product is still worth buying. However, I think this formula works best for people with wavy to 3A hair. Those with thick curly or coily hair might struggle to reap all the benefits that this conditioner offers, as it's relatively lightweight. But if your hair goes limp when your conditioner is too heavy, this won't weigh down your hair, and it'll control frizz.

As I mentioned previously, the smell of this product is salon-quality, so if that's something you're looking for, definitely make the investment. "The low bob is really taking over," he shares. "I’ve been lobbing off a lot of hair lately, but the bobs are getting a little bit longer and sitting lower." Case in point? Hailey Bieber's recent chop, pictured above, features a collarbone length and blended layers. "This isn’t a sharp, rigid cut. It’s soft, wearable, and meant to move," McMillan adds. Not that I ever doubted esteemed celebrity hairstylist Jonathan Van Ness, but I was genuinely surprised recently when I gave the hydration line a spin from his namesake brand, JVN. Little thing about me: I do not enjoy scalp scrubs. I'd even go so far as to say that I actively avoid them. It's mostly a texture thing (plopping a cold, sandy situation on my head genuinely sends a shiver up my spine), but my scalp also runs way too sensitive to even think about massaging it with salt, sugar, coffee grounds, cornmeal, or whatever granules someone swears will transform my lifeless locks. Chemical players (salicylic acid and the like) work much better whenever I need to give the skin up top a deep clean, but even those often leave me itchy and inflamed, and still, my flakes persist. About My Scalp and Hair

Let me just say that my hair is currently, well, going through it. I opted for highlights and a no-frizz chemical treatment before my November wedding, both of which were sublime for photos but, admittedly, not so wonderful for long-term hair health. See, anything that alters the structure of your hair (such as dye and other forms of chemical processing) can lead to dryness and breakage over time, and my ends have definitely seen better days.

It's also winter, which means my scalp is not loving the constant flux in temperature (warm, cozy indoor environments compared to the dry, arid weather outside) and has decided to bestow me with inflammation and dusting of stubborn flakes. Apologies for the TMI photo I'm about to present, but it's important to level-set what I was dealing with here.

See all those white dots? As much as I wish they were a result of my spotty camera lens, those are flakes very much scattered across the crown of my head. Despite what you see in the photo above, they're actually more concentrated near my hairline, where I deal with the most irritation. It doesn't help that I pile on stylers (a leave-in, oil, and gel every washday) to help my 2c curls look soft and bouncy. I'll usually swap in a clarifying shampoo every couple of washes to clear the buildup, but many work almost too well, leaving my scalp stripped and itchy—resulting in, sigh, even more flakes.

The Formula: Creamy, Gentle, and Satisfying

Enter Rōz's Salt Scalp Scrub. As I mentioned, I don't typically fawn over scrubs, so I wasn't exactly itching (pun intended) to add one to my routine. The thought of massaging granules of salt into my scalp makes me legitimately wince in pain, and to me, scrubs have never felt that intuitive. Do I use it before shampooing? After? How long do I leave the goop on?

Rōz is thankfully very clear that the scrub is meant to replace shampoo entirely. It's infused with coconut-based surfactants and is designed to give the scalp and strands a deep clean as it simultaneously exfoliates with Himalayan and Bolivian salt crystals and glycolic and salicylic acids. It further stimulates hair follicles with caffeine and rosemary extract, then to ensure the experience stays moisturizing—never stripping—the scrub features magnesium-rich seawater and the brand's signature BotaniComplex to soothe and hydrate while you massage. Not for nothing, the scrub also smells incredible. It boasts Rōz's signature warm, green scent, which softly lingers on your scalp and strands for hours post-wash.

The formula has a whipped, creamy consistency that doesn't really resemble shampoo. In fact, if I didn't see the pink salt crystals, I'd think it was a conditioner! That said, it does foam into a beautiful lather when you work a dollop into your scalp. I like to scoop a generous amount directly onto my wet roots, massage it in with my fingertips, then add a little more water to make it extra sudsy. I do wish it came with a little spatula or spoon, as I don't love using my fingertips to grab product—I always wind up splashing water into the jar—but keeping it as far away from the spray as possible helps prevent any excessive flooding.

My Experience and Results

The scrub rinses out quite easily, despite its buttery consistency and visible salt granules. I never feel like I have lingering crystals hiding in my roots, which has unfortunately happened with some of the more gritty, sandy options I've tried. (With those, it took at least three extra washes to feel totally clean.) Those salt crystals also don't feel too abrasive on my skin, which is great news for those with sensitive scalps like mine. I suspect that's because the granules are integrated so well into the creamy shampoo formula; you're not buffing the scalp with salt but using a purifying shampoo that just so happens to contain some extra salt particles.

After rinsing, I follow up with a nourishing mask—another Rōz hero—which feeds my strands hair-healthy nutrients and helps repair past damage. Each time I exit the bathroom, my scalp feels light, refreshed, and, most of all, clean (nary a stubborn flake in sight). I've been using it once every other week as a deep, thorough clean and find that's the perfect cadence to keep the buildup and inflammation at bay. I typically wash my wavy-curly hair twice a week, for context.

Whether I air-dry or give myself an at-home blowout (like I did in the photo above), my hair feels impossibly silky and weightless, as if I lived on the set of a shampoo commercial. According to Stephen, the care and keeping of your locs depends on your lifestyle and how long you've had the style. While the brand does have a curls collection, it's designed for curl types 2a to 3a (more like waves). This new collection, the Curls Intense range, caters specifically to curl types 3b to 4c. I always check new products for coconut oil before testing them out because, previously, it was the secret culprit keep my low-porosity hair super dry and was ecstatic to learn that this collection is coconut-oil free. More Curly Hair Staples I Love

Over the years, I've tested dozens of curly hair products, and while I found a handful of gems that work specifically for my curl type and pattern, I've definitely had my fair share of buys that just didn't hold up. Ask anyone with curly hair, and they will tell you what a process it can be to find products that work for them. Some products leave your hair frizzy, while others make your curls crunchy. But at the end of the day, all we want are bouncy, juicy, hydrated curls. And as a beauty editor, I constantly have my eyes peeled for the latest products that people are buzzing about. Over the past few months, there has been a rise in popularity for Brazilian curly hair products.

It all started with one particular video of a woman who was in Brazil and went to a beauty store to stock up on affordable curly hair products. She claimed that, compared to Brazil, the U.S. was behind in the kind of products they have available for people with curly hair. This led to thousands of people heading to Amazon to stock up on Brazilian haircare products, which made me even more curious to find out how they held up.

After doing my research, I found that people were mostly impressed by the brand Lola From Rio and Keyoma (Skala was a runner-up), so I swiftly hit "add to cart" to truly see how they would perform on my 3b/3c curls. Read on for my full review below.

About the Products I Used

The first product I tested was the Keyoma Batana Oil. This product is an extra-strength formula mixed with rosemary. It's considered a hair growth serum and scalp detox that stimulates hair growth, removes product buildup, repairs split ends, and nourishes the scalp. The oil is lightweight and soothing, and you only need to apply two to three drops on your target areas for 15–30 minutes before washing it out. Alternatively, you can leave it in overnight as a treatment.

To refresh my curls, I used the Lola From Rio Curl Defining Cream and Moisturizing Jelly Gel. The curl cream is said to provide 24 hours of moisture and definition, along with shine and softness. It has a subtle citrus scent and contains key ingredients like coconut oil, patawa oil, quinoa, and aloe that make detangling easy. The gel has a similar scent and promotes volume, less frizz, and more definition using vegetable-derived glycerin, patawa oil, and quinoa seed extract.

How I Used My Products

I decided to test the Keyoma Batana Oil during my washday. Unlike many hair oils on the market, this one is meant to be washed out (although it can be used as an overnight treatment). To start, I used three drops of the serum and applied it near my hairline since that's where I experienced the most breakage. I massaged it into my scalp using my fingertips and let it sit for about 15 minutes before washing it out and carrying on with my shampoo and conditioner.

Three days later, I was ready to give my curls a refresh. Most times, when I'm testing hair products, I will do so after a wash. However, I decided to test these products on my day three curls. The definition I had after my washday was pretty much gone, and I was left with a lot of frizz and much shine, so I was hoping these products would bring my curls back to life.

To start, I sectioned my hair into three parts. Once I had two of the three sections clipped back, I used a spray bottle and a round brush to rewet my hair. With the section I was working on completely soaked, I began raking the curl cream through my hair, using a generous amount of product. To ensure all the knots were out, I went in with my Wet Brush and gently combed out my hair from the ends to the root. Once my hair was detangled, I started applying the gel before scrunching my curls to create a fuller appearance. Once I finished my first section, I clipped it back up and followed the same steps for the other two sections. On this day, I decided to skip using a diffuser and opted for a microfiber towel to speed up the drying process.

The Results

As far as results go, I didn't see any immediate changes after using the oil since this is the kind of product that requires several months of testing to see and feel a significant difference. The website says that this particular brand can deliver results in one to two months, so I'm excited to continue using it to see if there's a difference.

As for the other two products, I was genuinely surprised by the way my curls came out. A lot of brands have gels that provide excellent hold but leave hair feeling crunchy even after using an oil to break the cast. While the Moisturizing Jelly Gel didn't eliminate all of my frizz, I thought it did a great job providing volume, definition, and shine. When used in combination with the curl cream, it leaves a soft finish. That said, I thought the curl cream worked really well on my hair as well and allowed me to detangle my curls with ease.

Are the Viral Brazilian Curly Hair Products Worth It?

Overall, I do believe these products are worth it, especially if you want hair that looks and feels good without breaking the bank. Unfortunately, curly hair products are very expensive and not always financially accessible for how often we need them, but these products are fantastic substitutes. In addition to many big names being more pricey, you sometimes don't get a lot of product for what you're paying. But for only $15 each, you get plenty of product that will definitely last a long time, even if you're using generous amounts.

If you have sensitive skin, the gel and curl cream smell really lovely and remind me of some of the drugstore products I used to use as a kid. They aren't too strong, but they still leave a subtle scent on your hair, which, as someone with sensitivity to fragrance, is a green flag. The oil, however, has a notably strong smell, so if you're going to invest in the oil, it's probably best to use it as an in-shower treatment. If you're not sensitive to fragrance or don't mind the smell, it could definitely work as an overnight option. The oil is also double the price of the curl cream and the gel, but you only need two to three drops per use. So if hair loss or thinning is a concern, I think it's worth it.

Please tell me I'm not the only one with limp, brittle, straw-like strands post-summer. (Really putting myself on blast with that mid-August photo above!) Saltwater, sweat, and an uptick of slick-backs—as a result of said sweat—always do a number on my thick, frizz-prone mane of 2c waves, which means I spend the transitional summer-to-fall period (ahem, right about now) resuscitating those bends so they'll be well-equipped for the other side of the harsh environmental spectrum—that is, brutal winds and cold, dry air.

Well, we've reached the official start of fall, and I have my lineup of damage-reversing haircare down to a T. There was a time in my life when I didn’t pay any consideration to what shampoo or conditioner I used. Yes, despite anyone with curly hair understanding how much of an event hair wash day is, I focused most of my attention on the serums, masks and curl creams that I layered on post-wash instead of recognising the importance of the products I was starting with.

But experts agree that the foundation to a good hair day starts in the shower. In fact, choosing the right shampoo and conditioner for your hair type doesn’t just make the wash itself easier, but it can completely transform how your hair looks and feels afterwards. The right duo can mean the difference between dried-out, frizzy, undefined strands and soft, healthy, hydrated hair that behaves how you want it to when you’re styling it later.

For those of us with curly hair, I’d argue that this choice becomes even more important. “Curly hair is naturally drier, so hydration is key,” says international hair stylist Aminata Kamara. “Look for gentle cleansers and ingredients like glycerin, aloe vera and nourishing oils that can add moisture without weighing curls down.” To make matters more complex, there isn’t a one-size-fits-all approach to curls. “Tighter curls and coils usually need richer, more emollient formulas, while looser curls often prefer lightweight hydration to retain definition,” explains Kamara.

As a curly girl, I've had to test out a lot of different beauty products to figure out what works for me, and any time a new haircare brand enters the space, I naturally tend to raise a brow. Admittedly, I'm more of an approach-with-caution kind of consumer, but when I saw Shakira was launching her own line for curly folks, my curiosity kicked in, and I was eager to try it.

The brand, called Isima, launched with eight products, all of which, by the way, have super-fun Latin-inspired names such as Superbomba, Delicia, and Suavisima. Currently available is a clarifying shampoo, hydrating shampoo, hydrating conditioner, restorative leave-in conditioner, curl cream, hair oil, scalp oil, and hair mask. The line has everything you could need for your standard washday routine or those days when you want to give your hair a little extra love.

In the past, I've found that many curl formulas don't give my 3B/3C curls the hydration they need, but when it came time to try out the products, I was hopeful. Curious to see how Isima holds up? Read on for my honest review.

How I Used Isima

Since this was a standard washday for me, I opted to use about half of the products in the line. During the previous wash cycle, I used a clarifying shampoo, so this time I went with the Riquisima Hydrating Shampoo. I started by sectioning my hair into three parts and massaging it into my scalp. The first two things I noticed were the scent and the generous lather. In hindsight, I can honestly see myself skipping perfume for the day entirely because it was on the stronger side with notes of kumquat, peony, and tonka bean. FYI: The scent is the same across the whole collection, which I love because sometimes too many different fragrances can clash. I also appreciated how the biomimetic ceramide and Mexican aloe extract keep my curls from feeling dry while shampooing.

From there, I went in with the Suavisima Hydrating Conditioner, made with key ingredients such as GluconaBond, which re-creates lost hydrogen and ionic bonds to strengthen hair, and biomimetic ceramide to boost shine and reduce breakage. It's recommended to leave in the conditioner for one to two minutes, but I applied it from mid-shaft to tips and didn't rinse it out until after all three sections of hair were detangled. The consistency felt like a mix between a cream and a lotion—not too heavy and not too lightweight.

After rinsing, I kept my hair soaking wet and started applying the All In Restorative Leave-In Conditioner, keeping the focus on my mid-lengths to ends. In addition to the GluconaBond and biomimetic ceramide, it also contains squalane, glycerin, and FiberSeal to smooth and seal the hair cuticle, replenish lipids, and add moisture. For added definition, I used the Curls Don't Lie Curl Perfector cream, which has a light hold and offers heat protection for up to 450ºF. It has all the same ingredients as the leave-in plus linseed and chia extract. Finally, I used the Delicia hair oil to keep my curls soft and shiny.

The Results

After allowing my hair to dry, I found myself really surprised by the results, especially since I didn't use anything like a mousse or a gel to lock my curls into place. I found that even with just the leave-in and curl cream, I managed to get defined curls that also felt soft and still had volume. I'm not a big fan of trading body for definition, so the fact that I didn't have to compromise that when using this line was great. I was also shocked at the fact that I didn't have to do any touch-ups on my hair until day three, which is ideal since I try not to wet my hair every single time I style it. I also really liked the fragrance. However, it was a bit strong in the beginning but slowly faded throughout the day. That said, if you like hair products that leave a lasting fragrance on your hair, this still gets the job done and lasts all day.

Is Isima Worth It?

In short, yes, Isima is worth it so long as you're not highly sensitive to fragrance. I really enjoyed how soft the products made my hair and how easy it was to get defined curls that held up over several days. I also appreciate that the whole line is relatively affordable, with price points all less than $45. The only thing I would flag is that while the fragrance smells great, I can see those with sensitive skin being overwhelmed by it. I also wish the line came with a gel or a mousse, but even with the leave-in and curl cream, my curls lasted three days before I needed a touch-up.

Let's be real: Effortless beauty is somewhat of a myth. Oftentimes, that "no makeup" makeup or "perfectly imperfect" hair takes just as much—if not more—legwork than going full glam. So when I saw "ghost waves" (a term coined by hairstylist Tom Smith) popping up all over social media as a low-maintenance summer hair trend, I thought there was no way they could be that easy to achieve. Barely there bends? Sounds fabulous, but my curls have more of an energetic presence, so I'd likely need multiple hot tools to create that texture—a task that doesn't seem very effortless at all.

Because I was a bit hesitant, I asked Smith himself how every hair type—from pin-straight strands to dense coils—can master the ghost waves trend at home, and it turns out, this breezy style is as unfussy as it seems. Scroll ahead for his in-depth tutorial.

What Are Ghost Waves, and Why Are They Trending Right Now?

Smith describes the style as "soft, barely there, S-shaped waves." They're effortless and undone, evoking the laid-back, '70s-inspired energy of a billowy boho dress. In fact, celebrities like Sienna Miller, Zoe Saldaña, and Daisy Edgar-Jones have all paired their ultra-boho Chloé dresses with understated ghost waves in the past year. Let it be known: Boho chic is back, and a free-spirited chiffon moment calls for an equally floaty hairstyle to match.

"The term comes from the fact that it's an undetectable technique," Smith explains. "Rather than being able to say, 'Oh, those are GHD curls,' or 'That's a curling-iron wave,' or 'That's a blowout,' it's a hidden technique, so you can't quite see how it's been done. It also [has] a whisper of texture rather than a shout. … The ghost wave speaks to that person who [loves] a quiet luxury [aesthetic], as opposed to the mob wife from last year."

This all being said, ghost waves are way more versatile than you think. Yes, they are technically categorized by slight, undetectable bends in the hair, but you can also simply lean into your natural texture for your own version of effortless, boho-inspired strands. The only general "rule" is to secure a middle part, as that tends to read breezier. "But it doesn't have to be a perfect middle parting," Smith caveats. "It can be something that's a little bit more irregular, which leans into that effortless look."

How to Achieve Ghost Waves at Home

"There are two approaches I would take," Smith notes. "There's an air-dry version and a hot-tool version for each hair type." Find all his tips for both ventures below.

Air-Dried Ghost Waves

Straight Hair Types

For those with straighter strands (hair types 1a to 2a), braids will be your best friends. "Braiding the hair can work really well if we're working on a thicker straight hair type," Smith shares. "Finer, straight hair types tend to look a little bit crimped if you braid them." If you do have finer locks, just keep the braids really loose to encourage more relaxed bends.

Before braiding, prep your strands with lightweight hydrators (think leave-ins and sea salt sprays) to moisturise without weighing down the waves. Braid the hair—either two pigtails or one larger plait—and leave them on overnight. "I wouldn't sleep with it completely wet in a braid, because it just won't dry," Smith shares. (That's where the lightweight sprays come in handy to encourage a bit of texture as it air-dries.) When you wake up, "a little impression of a bend can come into the hair," he shares.

Wavy-Curly Hair Types

"Those with any kind of wave or loose curl can achieve ghost waves quite easily," declares Smith. "There's a natural ghost wave underlying in the hair; it's just about how you prep."

That said, the exact prep steps will differ depending on your exact curl type (from 2b to 3a). "If your natural waves drop out quite easily, prepping the hair with a light-moisture, strong-hold product—like a hair mousse or a gel—is the best way to start," Smith suggests. "[That's] going to be the right consistency to encourage the texture contract and get a little bit stronger." Simply scrunch in your mousse or gel of choice into freshly washed, towel-dried hair without brushing it through, and let it air-dry.

Once your waves are completely dry, scrunch once again with your fingertips to eliminate any crispiness. "Then I would simply put your head upside down and spray through some texture spray to loosen it up and get that fluffy haze to it," adds Smith. If you find that your waves still haven't contracted as much as you'd like, you can add some styling powder to give them more body; focus the powder on your roots, gently working it through your hair to encourage volume.

If your waves or curls don't have as much trouble holding their shape, "the only difference is to use stronger moisture and lighter hold," explains Smith. Think creams, oils, and balms—anything super nourishing that has a bit of weight to it. "Brush that through the texture, and then shake it without scrunching," Smith instructs. Let the hair air-dry, and do your best not to touch it (tempting as it may be). "Letting it fully air-dry will lock the texture in. You can shake and fluff it up as much as you want once it's dry, and you'll have a bit more control over the result," he adds.

Curly Coily Hair Types

For curly, coily hair, natural ghost waves will have more than an undetectable bend. "If you want the Miley Cyrus [circa 2010] sort of ghost wave, then you would need to get a silk press first, straighten [the hair] all out, and then bend the waves in." That said, the ghost waves trend can also just refer to an air-dried wash-and-go, so you can adapt it to your curl pattern. According to Smith, those with tighter textures can achieve a curlier version of ghost waves by doing a two- or three-strand twist-out.

Again, you'll want to prep freshly washed hair with moisturising creams, oils, and balms. You can also gently pre-stretch the strands with your fingers or a paddle brush before twisting your hair section by section. "The bigger the sections you take, the looser you're going to make the wave," Smith notes. Leave them overnight, and then unravel the twists once the strands are completely dry. [It's] a curlier version of ghost waves, and it's much kinder and gentler to the texture," Smith notes.

Ghost Waves Using Hot Tools

The boho trend is all about embracing your natural texture, but you can feel free to use hot tools to secure a more uniform result. After a generous spritz of heat protectant (always!), straighten your full head of hair however you please (be it a silk press, blowout, or quick rough-dry), and then grab a hair straightener. Smith recommends the Dyson Corrale, as you can easily create flat-iron waves without the hassle of a cord.

Bend the hair in sections, pausing in between each pass. "Bend it one direction, as if you were about to make a curl, then let the hair drop out. Wait for a second so it cools slightly, and then pick that same strand up, turn the opposite direction, pausing again, turning it the opposite direction." Smith instructs. Essentially, you'll want to create the impression of a wave instead of a full curl. The number of sections you style will depend on your hair's thickness and texture, but remember that the waves are supposed to be irregular—nothing too perfect.

To make things even easier, he says you can also grab a two- or three-pronged waver to create those impressions. "The trick there is [using] really big, irregularly shaped sections," he shares, praising GHD's Triple Barrel Waver. Across Africa, intricate braiding patterns traditionally reflected a person’s age, tribe, marital status or social standing. Beyond their symbolism, braiding sessions were deeply social—hours spent styling often served as moments of connection, storytelling and bonding with loved ones. The cooling feeling of a metal rattail comb parting through the middle of your hair is a universally euphoric feeling.

Black women have since found themselves pioneering some of the biggest and coolest braid trends: cornrows styled with slicked-down baby hairs, twist outs, stitch braids... the list is endless. Braids and the process of braiding hair may seem tedious, sure, but there is so much magic through it all, and the results speak for themselves.

One of the best things is how the different types of braids deliver their own individual aesthetic and function; there’s truly something for everyone, whether you’re after low-maintenance beauty, a statement style or a protective look to support healthy hair growth. Types of Braids

1. Box Braids

2. Cornrows

Cornrows are the ultimate protective style that involves your hair being braided into sleek, scalp-hugging rows. From classic straight-back lines to curvy and intricate patterns, you can rock them plain, add extensions for extra length or jazz them up with beads. 3. Stitch Braids

Just make sure your hair is well-conditioned with a lightweight moisturiser before braiding to prevent breakage. And since you’re working with smaller sections of your natural hair, ensure that the braids are not too heavy.

7. Goddess Braids

Goddess braids are a type of box or knotless braids that incorporate loose curly hair extensions or natural curls, often at the mid-lengths or ends, creating movement and a soft, romantic, voluminous look. They’re great for formal events or vacations and can be styled into buns, halos or updos—you name it.

8. Faux Locs

This is a loc-inspired style using extensions wrapped around your hair. Faux locs give the look of traditional locs without the commitment, and they come in tonnes of textures and lengths. For a natural look, wrap with marley hair. The more worn-in, the more natural they look.

9. Ponytail Braid

Sleek at the base and flowing at the ends, the ponytail braid is a go-to for polished glam with minimal effort, whether it’s braided high, low, or to the side. Use a strong-hold gel for that snatched finish and wrap a section of hair around the base for a pro-level touch.

10. Bubble Braids

Not technically braids, but too fun not to include, bubble braids are created by securing ponytails at intervals down the length with elastic bands and puffing out each section to form those so-called “bubbles” of hair between each tie. Use a soft-hold hairspray to lock them in place.

11. Passion Twists

Think curly, boho and protective. Passion twists are two-strand twists made with water wave or curly extension hair, resulting in springy, natural-looking twists with texture and movement.

12. Braid Bob

What’s better than a bob? A braided bob, of course. Short, chic and endlessly versatile, the braided bob frames the face beautifully and requires less maintenance than longer styles, making it ideal for busy schedules or warmer weather.

13. Bantu Knots

Equal parts protective and stylish, Bantu knots are a versatile style rooted in African heritage that can be created by twisting sections of hair into mini top knots all over the head. How Long Should You Keep Braids In?

Most braids can be worn for four to six weeks, depending on the style and how well they're maintained. Too long, and you risk matting and breakage. Listen to your hair. Once you start noticing buildup, obvious overgrowth, frizz or if your scalp feels itchy no matter how much you refresh it, it’s probably time to take them out.

Top tip: To keep braids looking fresher for longer, Tosin Johnson, owner of SIMPLYGorgeous, advises to “lightly mist with water and braid spray every few days to keep them fresh and hydrated.” You also can’t go wrong with “protecting at night and preventing frizz by sleeping in a satin bonnet or scarf,” Jonhson adds.

How Do You Keep Braids Clean?

You don’t have to drench your whole head to keep your braids fresh. The big focus should be on your scalp. Use a gentle cleanser or diluted shampoo in an applicator bottle to target buildup and rinse lightly. Johnson adds, "Start with a well-hydrated and cleansed scalp, so do a good wash with a shampoo such as The Steam Bar Scalp Shampoo, £30.” For boho/mermaid/goddess braids, Johnson also advises, “Blend curly human hair into different sections throughout the braid for that effortless boho vibe, then use a curl-defining mousse to keep the free pieces bouncy. Avoid heavy oils so the curls don’t matte or look stringy.”

Top tip: Put a wig cap on while washing braids and wash through it to protect the partings and keep braid frizz to a minimum. Some rosemary hair oil goes a long way to moisturise, and be gentle with those edges.

How to Prep Hair Before Braiding

Healthy braids start with healthy hair. That means a good wash, deep condition and a hydrating base to make sure your strands stay moisturised underneath the style to help prevent breakage. “Always prep your hair with a hydrating leave-in conditioner before braiding to ensure it’s well moisturised in the braid, and wrap your hair at night to prevent frizzing,” says Johnson.

Claire Martin, curl educator at The Doux UK, advises, “Use a base gel for neat partings (Try: The Doux Push It! Honey Braid & Edge Gel, £14) and follow with a foam for a smooth base and frizz-free hold (Try: The Doux Mousse Def Texture Foam, £16). Lock in moisture with coconut, rose, avocado and monoi oil.”

Johnson doubles down on this. "Apply a strengthening serum, like Mielle Rosemary Mint Scalp & Hair Oil (£11), beforehand to protect your strands. Lightly mist with water and braid spray every few days to keep them fresh and hydrated."

How to Protect Your Scalp While Wearing Braids

Don’t ignore your scalp just because it’s tucked under braids. Make sure your style isn’t too tight and give your roots some love throughout the week. A tension-free base is key. Use soothing products like aloe-based sprays or oils to calm your scalp if needed.

"Wrap your hair at night with a silk or satin scarf to reduce friction. Lightly mist your scalp with water and braid spray every few days to keep it hydrated and calm," says Johnson.

Top tip: Use lightweight extensions (perhaps even plant-based) and a gentle shampoo while wearing a wig cap to keep things clean.

Can You Work Out or Swim with Braids?

You can absolutely swim with braids. Braids are made for movement; you just need a rinse-and-dry game plan post-activity. Just rinse your scalp with water after workouts or swims to remove sweat and chlorine, and pat your braids dry with a microfiber towel. Wear a swim cap for chlorine-heavy pools and always dry your braids completely after exposure to water.

Let's be real: Effortless beauty is somewhat of a myth. Oftentimes, that "no makeup" makeup or "perfectly imperfect" hair takes just as much—if not more—legwork than going full glam. So when I saw "ghost waves" (a term coined by hairstylist Tom Smith) popping up all over social media as a low-maintenance summer hair trend, I thought there was no way they could be that easy to achieve. Barely there bends? Sounds fabulous, but my curls have more of an energetic presence, so I'd likely need multiple hot tools to create that texture—a task that doesn't seem very effortless at all.

Because I was a bit hesitant, I asked Smith himself how every hair type—from pin-straight strands to dense coils—can master the ghost waves trend at home, and it turns out, this breezy style is as unfussy as it seems. Scroll ahead for his in-depth tutorial.

What Are Ghost Waves, and Why Are They Trending Right Now?

Smith describes the style as "soft, barely there, S-shaped waves." They're effortless and undone, evoking the laid-back, '70s-inspired energy of a billowy boho dress. In fact, celebrities like Sienna Miller, Zoe Saldaña, and Daisy Edgar-Jones have all paired their ultra-boho Chloé dresses with understated ghost waves in the past year. Let it be known: Boho chic is back, and a free-spirited chiffon moment calls for an equally floaty hairstyle to match.

"The term comes from the fact that it's an undetectable technique," Smith explains. "Rather than being able to say, 'Oh, those are GHD curls,' or 'That's a curling-iron wave,' or 'That's a blowout,' it's a hidden technique, so you can't quite see how it's been done. It also [has] a whisper of texture rather than a shout. … The ghost wave speaks to that person who [loves] a quiet luxury [aesthetic], as opposed to the mob wife from last year."

This all being said, ghost waves are way more versatile than you think. Yes, they are technically categorized by slight, undetectable bends in the hair, but you can also simply lean into your natural texture for your own version of effortless, boho-inspired strands. The only general "rule" is to secure a middle part, as that tends to read breezier. "But it doesn't have to be a perfect middle parting," Smith caveats. "It can be something that's a little bit more irregular, which leans into that effortless look."

How to Achieve Ghost Waves at Home

"There are two approaches I would take," Smith notes. "There's an air-dry version and a hot-tool version for each hair type." Find all his tips for both ventures below.

Air-Dried Ghost Waves

Straight Hair Types

For those with straighter strands (hair types 1a to 2a), braids will be your best friends. "Braiding the hair can work really well if we're working on a thicker straight hair type," Smith shares. "Finer, straight hair types tend to look a little bit crimped if you braid them." If you do have finer locks, just keep the braids really loose to encourage more relaxed bends.

Before braiding, prep your strands with lightweight hydrators (think leave-ins and sea salt sprays) to moisturize without weighing down the waves. Braid the hair—either two pigtails or one larger plait—and leave them on overnight. "I wouldn't sleep with it completely wet in a braid, because it just won't dry," Smith shares. (That's where the lightweight sprays come in handy to encourage a bit of texture as it air-dries.) When you wake up, "a little impression of a bend can come into the hair," he shares.

Wavy-Curly Hair Types

"Those with any kind of wave or loose curl can achieve ghost waves quite easily," declares Smith. "There's a natural ghost wave underlying in the hair; it's just about how you prep."

That said, the exact prep steps will differ depending on your exact curl type (from 2b to 3a). "If your natural waves drop out quite easily, prepping the hair with a light-moisture, strong-hold product—like a mousse or a gel—is the best way to start," Smith suggests. "[That's] going to be the right consistency to encourage the texture contract and get a little bit stronger." Simply scrunch in your mousse or gel of choice into freshly washed, towel-dried hair without brushing it through, and let it air-dry.

Once your waves are completely dry, scrunch once again with your fingertips to eliminate any crispiness. "Then I would simply put your head upside down and spray through some texture spray to loosen it up and get that fluffy haze to it," adds Smith. If you find that your waves still haven't contracted as much as you'd like, you can add some styling powder to give them more body; focus the powder on your roots, gently working it through your hair to encourage volume.

If your waves or curls don't have as much trouble holding their shape, "the only difference is to use stronger moisture and lighter hold," explains Smith. Think creams, oils, and balms—anything super nourishing that has a bit of weight to it. "Brush that through the texture, and then shake it without scrunching," Smith instructs. Let the hair air-dry, and do your best not to touch it (tempting as it may be). "Letting it fully air-dry will lock the texture in. You can shake and fluff it up as much as you want once it's dry, and you'll have a bit more control over the result," he adds.

Curly Coily Hair Types

For curly, coily hair, natural ghost waves will have more than an undetectable bend. "If you want the Miley Cyrus [circa 2010] sort of ghost wave, then you would need to get a silk press first, straighten [the hair] all out, and then bend the waves in." That said, the ghost waves trend can also just refer to an air-dried wash-and-go, so you can adapt it to your curl pattern. According to Smith, those with tighter textures can achieve a curlier version of ghost waves by doing a two- or three-strand twist-out.

Again, you'll want to prep freshly washed hair with moisturizing creams, oils, and balms. You can also gently pre-stretch the strands with your fingers or a paddle brush before twisting your hair section by section. "The bigger the sections you take, the looser you're going to make the wave," Smith notes. Leave them overnight, and then unravel the twists once the strands are completely dry. [It's] a curlier version of ghost waves, and it's much kinder and gentler to the texture," Smith notes.

Ghost Waves Using Hot Tools

The boho trend is all about embracing your natural texture, but you can feel free to use hot tools to secure a more uniform result. After a generous spritz of heat protectant (always!), straighten your full head of hair however you please (be it a silk press, blowout, or quick rough-dry), and then grab a flat iron. Smith recommends the Dyson Corrale, as you can easily create flat-iron waves without the hassle of a cord.

Bend the hair in sections, pausing in between each pass. "Bend it one direction, as if you were about to make a curl, then let the hair drop out. Wait for a second so it cools slightly, and then pick that same strand up, turn the opposite direction, pausing again, turning it the opposite direction." Smith instructs. Essentially, you'll want to create the impression of a wave instead of a full curl. The number of sections you style will depend on your hair's thickness and texture, but remember that the waves are supposed to be irregular—nothing too perfect.

To make things even easier, he says you can also grab a two- or three-pronged waver to create those impressions. "The trick there is [using] really big, irregularly shaped sections," he shares, praising GHD's Triple Barrel Waver. "It's a really big, chunky one, and [the barrels] are slightly cornered rather than completely round, so it gives a more natural-looking wave."

Four years ago, I made one of the biggest changes of my life. In October 2020, I underwent the "big chop," trimming my chemically altered hair to the root for my natural texture to make a triumphant return. Going back to natural coils also prompted a deep edit of the hair products I used daily and required relearning how to care for them. To get a better idea of what the different curl types are and what each needs to thrive, I tapped Maria Sotiriou, curl specialist and founder of Silke London, and celebrity hairstylist Sophie Rose Gutterman to share the perfect curly hair routine for your needs and their favourite products designed to enhance curls of all types. Whether you're looking to completely revamp your haircare routine or have yet to be introduced to your hair type, they've got you covered. The Different Curl Types

"Curly hair" is an umbrella term used to describe hair with tighter textures and the pattern of individual hair strands. The texture of each is categorized as being fine, medium, or coarse. "Each category is determined by the circumference of individual strands," Sotiriou explains. A hair type is assigned to determine how we expect the hair to act. "1a, 1b, and 1c hair is straight hair and will probably be difficult to style and hold a curl, whereas 4c type hair will be coily, but the texture can be fine and delicate even though you might not think it is," she says.

If you're unsure of where your strands fall on the spectrum, you're in luck. Sotiriou tells me there's a quick trick to revealing the nature of your hair. "The easiest way to determine curl pattern is by looking to see if the curl rotates round and back to sit just below the curl above. That would probably be coily hair," Sotiriou says. "If the hair curls around but drops lower when moving into the next curl, that is probably curly hair. Finally, if the hair doesn't curl back around but drops into a bend, that is wavy hair."

Is it possible for there to be different curl types on a single head of hair? According to Gutterman, not only can someone have multiple curl types in different locations, but they can also change over time. "It can be [more] curly, and the texture over time can get straight or be different from heat damage, chemicals, or even taking hormonal supplements," she explains. It's also helpful to know if your curls are high or low porosity, since water and products can enter the hair but also leave it easily. "Hair porosity will play a big role in how much product you need. Depending on how well your hair retains water, you may have to use a more hydrating leave-in," says Gutterman.

Type 2 (Wavy Hair)

Type 2 curls range from fine to coarse textures, are bendable, hold their shape, and grow in an S-shaped pattern from the scalp. To extend the longevity of styles with type 2 curls and reduce the chance of flattening, try diffusing your curls for maximum volume and definition. Then, finish off with a lightweight holding spray.

2a: This curl type features a fine texture that can be easily straightened. It also tends to lack volume at the root. To give the hair more volume and fullness, consider using light hair mousse to add some fullness at the base and pump up the volume without weighing down your strands.

2b: Lying flat at the crown with defined S-shaped waves starting from mid-length, the strands of this hair type have a thicker diameter than 2a. To play up your natural waves, try using a sea salt texturizing mist.

2c: Because the 2c curl type features S-shaped bends that are defined at the root and thick, they're susceptible to frizzing. To keep your curls well-maintained and defined, use a non-lathering, sulfate-free co-wash between washdays that won't strip natural oils and moisture away. Layering styling cream with mousse will lock in moisture and add hydration.

Type 3 (Curly Hair)

Type 3 curls range from shiny, loose S-pattern curls to tight corkscrew-shaped curls that form ringlets. The secret to maintaining the health of these strands is to use products that moisturize and define while combating halo frizz. You may also see some success layering products for extended wear time.

3a: This hair type tends to be shiny and have large, loose curls. It's also one of the most fragile curl types, as any friction can create frizz. Try scrunching a curl-enhancing product into damp hair to emphasise its texture and spritz with a lightweight curl refresher.

3b: Strands with a 3b curl type come in the form of springy, tight ringlets. This texture can get dry, so make sure you use curl gel formulated with humectants like hyaluronic acid, glycerin and aloe vera to attract moisture, offer definition, and deter frizz.

3c: This curl type is defined by densely packed, high-volume curls that are impacted by humidity, resulting in frizz. To stop your curls from drying out, use sulfate-free, creamy cleansers followed by mousse and styling cream while your hair is still wet.

Type 4 (Coily Hair)

Type 4 hair—also referred to as kinky or Afro textured—features tight, small curls that are naturally dry and can range from fine to coarse. They form tight, Z-shaped strands at the scalp and often experience shrinkage without help from products formulated to lengthen and define the hair. No matter how these curls are styled, moisture is their best friend!

4a: If someone has 4a curls, it means the hair has a visible curl pattern with springy, densely packed, S-shaped coils. Try pairing a curl cream with leave-in conditioner and incorporating a scalp massager in your haircare routine to detox the scalp while reducing buildup.

4b: This densely packed curl type has sharp, Z-shaped angles instead of coils that can be shaped and styled in many ways. Because this hair type is prone to dryness, combine priming and moisture sprays with leave-in conditioners with hydrating curl creams between washes.

4c: The 4c pattern has a zigzag shape like 4b curls, but it's less defined and sometimes indiscernible to the eye. This curl type also experiences more shrinkage than any other curl type. Avoid using products containing sulfates that strip the hair of moisture. Instead, opt for natural oils like argan, shea butter, and coconut oil in leave-in conditioners and creams to keep the hair moisturised.

Building a Curly Hair Routine

For anyone who's just beginning to learn about their curls, consider scaling back on hairstyling products and heat-styling to focus solely on creating a haircare routine built around the wellness of your hair. This can be done by trimming your strands every 10 to 12 weeks and using pre-wash oiling treatments, hydrating/repairing products, leave-in conditioning creams, heat protection, and sleep protection.

"All your hard work is lost unless you use nighttime hair protection to protect not only your hair but also all the products you've applied to your hair from being lost to the abrasive fabrics of your pillowcase," Sotiriou says.

Unsure of where to start on your curly hair journey? Below, Sotiriou shares four steps you can take to promote healthy, thriving curls through hydration, styling, and maintenance as well as the products she recommends adding to your natural haircare lineup for the best possible results. She likes to call her go-to routine the "lock in, ease out, maintain" method.

1. Lock In (Hydrate): Wash the scalp with a moisturising, protein-rich shampoo that will bring your hair to a level where you will need far fewer styling products. Follow with a hair mask or conditioner and distribute product through the hair with a wide-tooth comb or a wet brush, rinse, squeeze out excess water and apply a leave-in conditioner.
2. Ease Out (Cast and Release Curls): Apply curl mousse, styling cream, or styling gel before leaving the hair to dry and set into curls. Once set, rub oil serum into the palms of your hands, tip your head upside down, and squeeze the serum into the mid-lengths and ends of the hair.
3. Maintain (Make Curls Last): Extend your curly style by protecting it overnight with a silk hair wrap. Sleeping on curls without it will cause your curls to frizz and dehydrate. You'll also want to avoid overwashing!

Additionally, finding a line of products that works for your particular haircare needs and sticking with it will reap the best results. "I promise you will always be searching for the perfect product, but my honest opinion is that it doesn't exist for everyone. The product that works for your bestie will not give you the same results because you have different hair," says Gutterman. "Finding your own cocktail seems like a lot of work, but practice makes perfect! You can never go wrong with a hydrating cream. Once you master the level of moisture, then you can decide how much hold you need," she adds. Don't be afraid to get your hands in your curls and play with products!

Below, I'm sharing everything I learned, plus a few products that could make a difference in your baby-hair styling journey. Get ready to take notes!

What Are Edges?

Edges are the soft, fine hairs around the hairline (also popularly referred to as baby hairs. "In Black culture, edges are a statement. They can take a look from just okay to all the way together," begins pro hairstylist and makeup artist T. Cooper. "Because of the unique texture of Black hair, laid edges often signal care and intention." Edges have a deep history, one that has continued to inform the biggest hair trends of today while also reflecting the resilience of Black women.

So what makes the topic of edges complex? "Historically, when Black women show up polished, it's been both a form of pride and resistance from widespread stereotypes. Over time, it has become a fun way to be creative with hairstyling," Cooper explains, saying edges can be worn in a sleek and simple way or be transformed into pieces of art that reflect the personality of the wearer. "It's personal expression, but it's also part of cultural legacy," says Cooper.

Doing Your Edges for the First Time

If you're attempting to do your edges for the first time, know that there can be a learning curve. Cooper recommends starting simple and avoiding the temptation to overthink it. "A clean swoop goes a long way. As you get more confident, play around with more intricate styles," she says. It's also best not to go overboard with the styling product. "It's easy to get heavy-handed, but more isn't always better," Cooper adds. Test the product out to see how your hair reacts to the formulation, then build gradually and determine how much your hair needs. This is how you get your edges to stay in place without flaking or getting crunchy.

To ensure your edges last all day, focus on layering and setting. "Start with edge control, layer gel on top if you need more hold, then tie it down with a scarf. Sitting under a dryer or using a blow-dryer helps to lock it in," Cooper says. Additionally, for all-day wear (especially in heat and humidity), finish off your edges with a few spritzes of hair spray to keep your edges laid all day.

But zigzags, wavy patterns, and hearts are also chef’s kiss. For fun, I’ve mixed glitter into gel," she says. "You can even add rhinestones or pearls around them for a special occasion. Don’t be afraid to have fun with it. Your edges are another form of self-expression."

1. Separate Your Edges and Apply Styling Product

The first step to laying your edges is to separate your baby hairs around the face before slicking them down with a long-lasting and non-flaking edge-control product, using an edge brush to slick them down in the direction you'd like them to be styled. Hair type is key when it comes to landing on a product that can help mold your baby hairs. "For relaxed hair, oil and water can be enough. (That’s my personal lazy-girl technique.) A wax stick also works well if you want hold without heavy product," says Cooper.

For curly and coily textures, however, she prefers to use edge control. Right now, her top pick is the Instant Control Edge & Braid Gel ($19) since it locks the baby hairs in place. For clients with natural textures and thick strands, she applies a layer of edge control first, followed by a thick gel. Then, she ties it down with a scarf and sprays it with Level 3 Freeze Spray ($12) to extend the wear time of the finished style.

Edge control, which is commonly accepted as the most universal styling product for laying edges, has a thick and tacky consistency designed to lay down tight curls and coils, while looser curl types might benefit the most from combining a pomade with a gelée, oil, and water, or using a wax stick. 2. Style With Your Brush of Choice

Next, it's time to break out your styling tool. Yes, simply using a toothbrush for laid edges is an easy and affordable option. (I even have memories of attempting edges with a travel toothbrush.) But consider using a brush crafted for the job. While all the brushes below may look different, they have one thing in common: They're crafted using natural boar bristles that will smooth and style your hair while keeping strands healthy.

You'll also find many edge brushes have a double-sided design. "Double-sided brushes give you range. The brush side smooths everything out, and the pointed end lets you really shape your baby hairs—whether you’re doing a sleek swoop or manipulating your baby hair into swirls," explains Cooper. She advisees treating edges like a mini canvas, using the brush as an edge art tool and having fun with the process. The brush will help swoop and style your edges, working hand in hand with the edge control to mold them into shape.

Cooper's top choice for a brush is Cricket's Amped Up Edges Brush ($5). Designed with coils and curls in mind, one side is a brush while the other features a pointed tip for defined designs. It's also helpful for separating your edges from your hair before slicking them down. The boar bristles also move effortlessly through gel and water and are gentle on sensitive scalps. To refine your baby hairs further, go in with a tail comb.

3. Refine With a Tail Comb

Whether you're going for a bold and fashion-forward look or hoping to pull of a natural-looking finish for your baby hairs, pick up a tail comb for all the small details that bring big impact. Take the pointed tail of a comb and follow the shape of your baby-hair design to further mold it into place. If longevity is what you're after, you may want to finish off each swoop with some gel on the very tip.

4. Set Your Edges

Now that you've gone through the trouble of shaping your baby hairs to perfection, make them last for hours on end by setting them. Use a scarf to carefully wrap your edges, making sure the scarf lays flat against the hair. This will help avoid the hair shifting out of place. The goal is for your styling product to dry, allowing your edges to harden. For extra insurance, Cooper recommends going over your edges with a freeze spray (often at a higher hold level than hair spray) for the best result after removing the scarf. You want to reinforce the hold!

5. Add Oil and Serum

If you're noticing some white residue left over on your edges after styling and setting, don't panic. Cooper tells us that can be fixed by adding a few drops of oil or serum, restoring shine to your strands and leaving them residue-free.

Picture this: You're in the shower, going through your hair routine, and as you glide your favorite paddle brush through your hair, you feel something catch. You investigate, and to no surprise, you find a knot that sits on just one strand of hair. Then, of course, comes the all too familiar moment of contemplation. If you ignore the knot, will it get bigger? Should you cut the knot out with scissors? Is it even possible to undo a knot this small?

This reoccurring inner dialogue is something that is super common for those who experience what hairstylist refer to as single-strand knots, also known as fairy knots. "Fairy knots might seem small, but their impact can be big," says Stephanie Hinkle, a textured hairstylist and Keranique partner. "These tiny, tangled loops create a knot that’s tough to detangle and easy to overlook until it causes breakage."

While these might seem nearly impossible to manage given how small they are and how many might show up in your hair, there are ways to prevent getting these knots and get rid of them (but more on that in a bit). First, it's important to get a good understanding of what these knots are and why they even happen.

Fortunately, Who What Wear chatted with two leading hairstylists who were willing to spill all the details on how to manage these pesky knots like a pro. Read on for the full scoop.

What Causes Fairy Knots?

If you experience fairy knots, odds are you've asked yourself how it's even possible for something that small to be created. Given the causes, though, it's actually easier than you think. "Fairy knots form when a single strand of hair loops around itself and creates a tiny, tight knot," says hairstylist and licensed cosmetologist Ebony Gordon. "This usually happens when the hair isn’t properly moisturized or detangled, causing strands to catch on themselves or each other."

On top of dry hair, fairy knots can also come from friction on pillowcases, towels, and frequent manipulation. Hinkle adds that shrinkage, skipping protective styles, and a lack of "slip" when using conditioners and detanglers can also encourage single-strand knots to form.

Who is Prone to Fairy Knots?

Fairy knots are typically experienced by those with textured hair (think 3b to 4c types with fine strands and high shrinkage). This is because this kind of hair "bends and curves per inch, increasing the likelihood of loops," says Hinkle. "High porosity or chemically-treated hair tends to absorb and lose moisture quickly, making it more fragile and prone to tangling." Contributing to that general dryness is the lack of natural oil from the scalp, as the oil has a harder time traveling down the hair shaft, meaning ends are dry and more vulnerable to knots.

How to Avoid Fairy Knots

Considering the way single-strand knots form and how frequently they may show up throughout your hair, it's not likely you'll be able to avoid them completely. That said, there are a few ways to reduce how often they show up.

For starters, hydration is key. That means keeping products like conditioners, detangling solutions, leave-in conditioners, and hair masks in your regimen is a must. Hinkle notes that you should never try to detangle your hair while it's dry, and it should always be conditioned and sectioned beforehand. You'll also want to regularly schedule trims with your stylist every eight to 10 months, according to Gordon. This will reduce split, dry, and rough ends that are sometimes responsible for the knots.

As for styling and post-wash care, Gordon suggests wearing low-manipulation or stretched styles like twist-outs, braid-outs, or low buns to "keep the hair stretched and reduce shrinkage, which in turn lowers the chances of single strand knots forming," she says. Wearing these styles to bed can also reduce friction when paired with satin bonnet or silk pillowcase.

How to Get Rid of Fairy Knots

Consider Scheduling a Trim

Odds are you have a pair of hair-cutting scissors at home, but unless they're salon quality and you have experience, it's best to leave the seek and destroy method to your hairstylist. "Cutting [the knots out] at home without the right technique can lead to uneven ends or accidentally removing more length than necessary, which may affect the shape or health of the hair," says Gordon. Allowing your stylist to take the reins here will ensure that you're getting a clean and even cut that won't compromise your hair health in the long run.

Try Detangling the Knots

In most instances, single-strand knots are pretty much impossible to detangle due to their size and tightness. That said, Hinkle notes it's not entirely impossible if you're able to catch them early enough and soften them with conditioner. "Once they tighten, especially at the ends, they’re better off trimmed to avoid split ends or breakage traveling up the hair shaft," she says. "Instead of ripping or tearing them off, saturate your hair with conditioner and use your fingers to gently work around the knot." If it doesn't budge, leave it to your hairstylist.

Hydrate and Detangle Consistently

While this is already required to avoid getting these kinds of knots, you should be prioritizing moisture all the time. In fact, being prone to single-strand knots, if anything, is an indication that your hair needs moisture even more. "Use a moisturizing, slip-heavy leave-in conditioner to soften the hair and reduce tangling," says Gordon. "Then, detangle gently from ends to root while hair is damp."

When detangling, Hinkle recommends combing through your hair gently using your fingers and a conditioner before going in with a detangling brush or wide-tooth comb at the end. She also suggests incorporating deep conditioning treatments regularly for an extra boost of moisture.

Try Styles That Stretch Your Hair

Since shrinkage plays a part in the creation of fairy knots, opting for hairstyles that keep your coily or curly hair elongated can reduce knotting. Some of Hinkle's recommended styles include Bantu knots, twists, braids, heat-free banding, low-heat blow-drying with heat protectant, or African threading (which also promotes growth and length retention). Doing this while incorporating some of the preventative styling measures mentioned can be equally helpful.

The Fit and Feel

The first thing I noticed after putting the hoodie on was how well it fit. It's both cropped and oversize, which makes it easy to dress up or down, depending on your style. The inside of the hoodie was made with a sweat-wicking French terry fabric that feels super soft on the skin. Meanwhile, the actual hood is satin-lined to create the bonnet. Upon my initial try-on, I could tell that Nike and Wilson were determined to get this right, which made me even more excited to test it out.

The Test

I decided the best time to wear this hoodie was on one of my busier days, when my hair was most likely going to be put through a lot. Earlier in the day, I decided to go for a run without the hoodie because it was raining. But after getting home, I showered and washed my hair so I could have my curls at their best. I kept my styling process the same as usual, sticking to leave-in conditioner, curl cream, and gel cream (which has a light hold but still provides definition).

While this might not seem like the most obvious first step to testing, I usually nap shortly after a run. This happens after almost every workout for me without fail, and I figured if I were to wear a bonnet going to bed, why not see how it works with the hoodie? At this point, I knew there was a chance I'd wake up to dented curls or some knots since I toss and turn in my sleep. But to my surprise, I woke up 30 minutes later in genuine shock at how well my curls held up.

Once the hoodie passed the unofficial "nap test," I had a feeling it would probably keep my curls in check for the rest of the day. Spoiler: it did. I wore it while I ran the rest of my errands, which required me to trudge through rain and humidity. But by the time I got back home that evening, my curls still looked defined and not nearly as frizzy as they typically would given the weather.

The humidity and rain forced me to level my expectations, but even so, I felt like my curly hair looked better than usual because of the satin-lined hood. I also expected some shrinkage as my hair dried, as it typically does on the first day of my wash cycle. That said, humidity will sometimes cause shrinkage plus frizz, which can make my hair look a bit messy. So overall, I appreciated that the hood helped me maintain shine and definition all day long.
