If you’ve been inundated with shots of moulded corsets, beanstalk heels and knotted satin dresses all over your social media feeds, it should come as no surprise that we’re currently in the midst of the fall/winter 2026-2027 Haute Couture Week. The most prestigious of all fashion weeks, the bi-annual event is a showcase of wearable artistry, with the capabilities of hallowed ateliers and the exceptional work of the petites mains (a French phrase that refers to the seamstresses, embroiderers, milliners and button makers who create these garments) on full display.

Presenting a collection during the exclusive event is by invitation only, and controlled by Paris’s Fédération de la Haute Couture et de la Mode, meaning that only the most exceptional maisons can participate. The result is garments that are nothing short of masterpieces, often taking hundreds of hours to complete and rendered with painstakingly accurate, breathtakingly beautiful hand-stitched embroidery, flourishes, sequins and accents.

Each garment is then made to order using the precise measurements of the ultra-high-net-worth clients who have the extreme fortune of taking these creations home. However, for many of us, it is just a privilege to revel in the sight of these showpieces. That’s why whenever Haute Couture Week rolls around, it’s paramount to take the time to peruse each look and inspect every minuscule stitch and meticulously applied motif.

Despite a more considered and pared-back schedule, especially compared to the ready-to-wear seasons staged each February and September, there is still a chance that something exceptional passes you by. Everything of Note From Fall/Winter 2026–2027 Haute Couture Week

1. At Schiaparelli, Gaudí, Ghostface and Kinky Silicone

For Schiaparelli’s F/W 26 haute couture collection, creative director Daniel Roseberry penned a manifesto on the "magic of creation" which can be "found only in total surrender to the unknown", as he wrote. "Codes—as beloved as they are—aren’t meant to be static," he continued, explaining his decision to eschew conventional Schiaparelli archetypes for something far more imaginative and inventive.

In place of literal anatomical motifs, subversive, surrealist faces were woven into dresses that resembled the Ghostface villain from the Scream franchise. In the place of keyhole symbols, vibrant fish scales adorned dresses and jackets to resemble the architecture and façades of Gaudí masterpieces, including Barcelona’s Casa Batlló.

Furthering the French maison’s innovative spirit, Roseberry fused quotidian materials with superb craftspersonship, creating breathtaking gowns made from subversive latex and dreamy silicone. Indeed, it’s clear that the upper echelon of fashion has caught jelly fever, with Roseberry rendering this gelatinous and aquatic material into sculptural corsets, coral-inspired skirts and sea urchin sandals.

These bustiers were a focal point for the panoply, made by carving the resin mould by hand before casting it with a porcelain effect and rendering it in hyperrealistic shades that melted to the body.

One exceptional moment came not on the runway but in the hours after. The closing look, modelled by Ivy Stewart, was whisked from the opulent parlour inside the Petit Palais where it was presented that morning and immediately transported to the red carpet at Leicester Square, where Zendaya wore it for the world premiere of The Odyssey that afternoon. Talk about an epic adventure.

Elsewhere, on the front row, Schiaparelli continued its procession of awe-striking designs with the silhouettes it dressed its guests in. Emma Corrin, ever the fashion chameleon, was washed in pastel plumage in a feather-adorned jacket accented with a funnel neckline and protruding, nipple-like talons.

Bad Bunny made his haute couture debut in a buttercream suit and gilded tie that appeared as though he was wearing a plait around his neck. Those in the know will recognise this as a callback to Schiaparelli’s F/W 24 ready-to-wear collection, which invoked the tailoring seen in Pippa Garner's 1987 photography collection, Future Man!

The subjects of the legendary 1990 documentary Paris Is Burning might’ve told us that reading is fundamental, but when it comes to fashion, referencing is clearly even more essential.

2. At Dior, Fans, Ferns and a Glimpse at Jonathan Anderson's Bridal Visions

Jonathan Anderson might’ve designed Taylor Swift’s wedding dress, the first haute couture creation of its kind for a celebrity since the Northern Irish designer took the helm of the brand, but he skipped the exclusive New York City nuptials over the weekend ahead to stay in Paris for Dior’s FW/ 26 haute couture show.

Despite remaining quite tight-lipped after the show—he told the press that "it was a joy to work with her"—he did provide a glimpse of what his vision for a bride would entail. In the esteemed couture tradition, he concluded his collection with a dreamy off-the-shoulder white gown, complete with resplendent fern motifs and rosette details.

Botanicals have been a consistent part of Anderson’s work at the luxuriate, from his lily pad heels to his frog chainmail clutches. This season, it took a starring role as the Jardin des Tuileries was transformed into a greenhouse flanked with black-lacquered wood and lined with fronds. On the runway, a verdant, grass-like fabric was woven throughout the collection, appearing in long robes, cropped bar jackets and fringed scarves.

But where boutonnières and embroidered petals constantly appear, Anderson used the collection to honour the work of American sculptor Lynda Benglis. Using her methodology of knotting and moulding as a framework for textile manipulation, Anderson created sumptuous dresses that pleated like accordions. This idea of folding hit a literal note in the suite of fans that appeared in the collection, perhaps a nod to the fact that Paris had just encountered a record-breaking heatwave in the weeks prior? Metallic plissé hats were also a highlight and cemented Anderson as not only an incredibly cerebral designer, but one who always relishes humorous touches.

On a more serious note, Dior also embraced the long-standing relationship between Benglis and artisans in the Ahmedabad and Gujarat regions by showcasing the Indian crafts of chintz and gemstone carving. The latter, a finely woven cotton textile bearing floral motifs, was on display through the clutch bags that bore antique chintz prints that date back to the 18th century.

If designing the most important dress of Taylor Swift’s life wasn’t the biggest thing to happen to Anderson this week, this sophomore show certainly is. But he wouldn’t get by without a little help from his friends: Sabrina Carpenter, whom he also dressed for her magnum opus Coachella headliner, Josh O’Connor, whom he dressed for Luca Guadagnino’s Challengers and Alexa Chung, who recently wore a custom chartreuse Dior dress to the 2026 Met Gala.

3. At Chanel, Mattieu Blazy Gets His Happily Ever After

Once upon a time, there was a man named Matthieu Blazy who landed the job of one’s dreams as the artistic director of Chanel. The designer knows his life is a fashion fairytale, and for the French maison’s latest haute couture collection, he materialised the whimsical universe he occupies, complete with climbing vines, beanstalk heels and magpie treasures.

The first model stepped out onto the runway carrying a century-old leatherbound book of fairytales that was owned by Coco Chanel herself. Compounding this ode to fantasy was the soundtrack, featuring snippets of The Lord of the Rings soundtrack and "Kiss Me" by Sixpence None The Richer, arguably one of the most romantic songs of the '90s.

The collection itself was laden with references to literary archetypes and folklore, including a miniature sleeping bear bag that would suit the Goldilocks amongst us and stilettos accented with thorned roses à la Beauty and the Beast. The Golden Goose, Swan Lake, Snow White and Princess and the Pea were all obvious references, too.

Elsewhere, the front row was matched with a dramatic lineup, including Teyana Taylor, Pedro Pascal, Sarah Pidgeon, Alexa Demie and Elizabeth Debecki. The most noteworthy addition was Joël Blanc, a French artist who specialises in live watercolour landscapes from prestigious sporting events, including Roland-Garros. In a world fixated on the return of physical media, could there be a more charming form of documentation than this?

The question that remains, however, is whether Chanel would get its happily ever after. Given that Blazy is quite the romantic, the answer should be obvious. In his imagination, however, the narrative doesn’t end with the princess being swept off her feet by her prince and heading down the aisle, despite the presence of a fantastical wedding dress.

Instead, he looks to the lives of Gabrielle Chanel and Princess Diana, ending the show with a "revenge dress" rendered in sultry black, proving that the women he designs for don’t need rescuing, but rather elegant clothes to write their own stories in.

In case you haven't already noticed, the best dressed people in the world are currently in Paris, whether it's because they live there year-round or are just stopping through for a Haute Couture Week show or two. One such skilled dresser is Alexa Chung, who attended a Bulgari event in the City of Lights wearing an outfit that made little black dresses irrelevant. They're classic, yes, but sometimes, classic just doesn't cut it. Maximalism is back with a vengeance in 2026, and if dressing like the chicest women in Paris is high on your list of priorities this year, I suggest you follow Chung's lead by ditching basic dresses. Instead, try her preferred style out for size.

The dress trend in question? Fringe dresses. Specifically, the British It girl chose an ivory dress from Anna October's pre-fall 2026 collection, which hasn't yet been released. The dress features a subtle and elegant jacquard print and long, silky fringe on its hem and cape. The opulent fabric and details feel like a nod to French history, dating back to the days when Marie Antoinette led the rococo style movement that was full of similarly soft colors, delicate materials, and lavish embellishments. Her look for the evening wasn't all loud and bold, though. On her feet, Chung kept it simple, donning a pair of sleek black pumps that allowed her dress to be the star of the show.

It shouldn't come as a huge surprise that fringe dresses like Chung's are making the rounds in the world's most stylish city. Fringe, in general, has been on the up-and-up for a while now. Suede and leather fringe dresses dominated this past fall, and tassel-edge scarves are gaining popularity ahead of spring's long-awaited arrival. This is basically the year of the fringe, and dresses will not be left out of the movement.

A lot is going on in Paris right now, with the Haute Couture shows going full steam ahead directly following the men's ones from last week, and because of that, people who get paid to have great taste have all flocked to the French capital, making it an even better place for trend spotting than it is on any given Tuesday. Knowing that, I've been doing some extra sleuthing, putting in overtime to try to spot the next It thing in fashion on the streets outside Paris's chicest hotels and buzzy runway-show locations. It was all worth it, though, when I discovered a compelling shoe style on several particularly stylish celebrities. Taylor Russell, Anya Taylor-Joy, and Kelly Rutherford—all in the span of a single day—were photographed wearing pretty satin heels. Once is an accident, twice is a coincidence, and three times is a pattern—and just like that, an exciting new shoe trend was born.

All three satin heel–clad celebs were first seen leaving their hotel, Le Bristol Paris, before heading to shows around the city, including Jonathan Anderson's first haute couture show at Dior, hosted at Musée Rodin. For the star-studded event, house ambassador Taylor-Joy wore a jacquard-print silk trench coat, styled with a feather scarf and a pair of champagne-colored Dior pumps. Her fellow Dior ambassador, Russell, also attended the show, wearing a sculptural cocktail dress from the brand's pre-fall 2026 collection paired with black satin pumps.

At the same hotel, Gossip Girl actress and elevator-mirror-selfie expert Rutherford was seen heading out to the Julie de Libran Haute Couture show wearing a black belted shirtdress from the French designer. With it, she added black tights and matching satin pumps.

These kinds of coincidences don't just happen—when three best dressed contenders all fly to Paris with the same shoe style, it's important to take note. It's even more important to get ahead of the rising trend by investing in a pair of the elegant, sophisticated footwear. They offer a unique twist on classic pumps by adding a textural change-up from typical leather and a far more formal touch. But don't think you can only wear them with dresses or skirts. Satin heels look just as chic with vintage jeans and a sweater or tailored jacket. Just don't wear them in the rain!

Yes, the very point of fashion week is for the best designers in the world to debut their latest collections, but that shouldn't take away from the influence those attending shows have as well. Street style has become a huge business in and of itself, with brands spending significantly to get their clothes on popular tastemakers, from editors to content creators to celebrities. These days, there's as much coverage about the style spotted outside of shows as there is about the collections debuting during them, and nowhere is the street style as elite and worthy of attention as Paris—particularly during Haute Couture Week.

The short-but-sweet week of couture shows just wrapped up in the City of Lights, with couture houses like Schiaparelli, Iris van Herpen, Maison Margiela, and Balenciaga all showcasing their fall 2025 couture creations. Glenn Martens showed his first collection for Margiela, and Demna bid farewell to Balenciaga. With so much to celebrate and mourn, this season's guests were dressed in their absolute best.

I, as a deep admirer of all things couture week street style, found myself saving look after look to my summer mood board—from Dua Lipa's keyhole sequin gown to Gabriella Karefa-Johnson's zebra-print coat, both of which I spotted outside of Daniel Roseberry's master class Schiaparelli unveiling. Ahead, see which ensembles I chose to keep in mind for later use, which were worn by dedicated attendees who went the extra mile for this season's shows, fashion people whose personal style always shines through, and models in between runways who consistently make dressing cool look effortless.

Dedicated Attendees

Celebrities, high-value clients, and top influencers are often hosted by brands and, therefore, wear looks designed by the showing designer. For couture week, that means that guests are often dressed in couture ensembles. In other words, they're not wearing comfortable shoes and jeans—they're in hand-beaded and hand-sewn works of art, and it shows in the street style images.

Dua Lipa always understands the sartorial assignment, whether she's performing onstage, dancing at an outdoor festival, lounging by the sea on vacation, or attending the top fashion shows in Paris during couture week. She just gets it.

Another dedicated fashion person is, of course, Cardi B, whose best looks come out of high-profile events, from the Met Gala to couture week. This sculptural work of art is a perfect match for the artist who loves to shock and awe whenever she steps onto a red carpet or out of a runway show.

When our team attends shows during fashion week, there's a reason why we often try to stick around afterward to see what the models who just walked are wearing in between jobs. To go with their perfectly done-up makeup and hair, they always have on something utterly casual and effortless—usually jeans, sneakers or flats, and a great jacket or coat that are often paired with a simple T-shirt and designer tote bag.

No one does modern off-duty dressing quite like supermodel Mona Tougaard, who donned a suede bomber jacket with a T-shirt and white jeans after the Chanel show.

As much as I love nothing more than talking and writing about fresh trends—their ability to make even the simplest outfit feel instantly current never gets old—when it comes to the pieces I actually want to add to my wardrobe, longevity and versatility will always win out.

Take the peplum jacket. Suddenly a street style sensation at Paris Haute Couture Fashion Week, this refined silhouette exudes an effortless elegance that feels both timeless and modern. Across Paris’s cobbled streets, impeccably dressed showgoers embraced the trend, styling their peplum jackets with everything from matching skirts to micro shorts.

A masterclass in proportion play, the design begins as a classic tailored jacket, hugging the body before flaring out at the waist, creating a dramatic silhouette that emphasises the body's natural curves. Some iterations take a subtle approach, with barely-there peplum flares for a hint of definition, while others lean into the theatrical, incorporating bold sculptural cuts that add plenty of drama.

It’s been some time since we last saw this shape take centre stage. A staple of the early 2010s, the peplum top and jacket trend's popularity gradually faded as fashion moved towards looser, more relaxed tailoring. But now, nearly a decade later, it’s poised for a revival. And what better setting for its grand return than a couture fashion week? Schiaparelli, in particular, embraced the art of structure this season, enhancing natural silhouettes with architectural precision—further reinforcing the peplum’s place in modern wardrobes.

Beyond Parisians, the trend has found favour with celebrities attending the week’s couture shows too. Model Karlie Kloss showcased the peplum jacket’s polished appeal, pairing a sleek black double-breasted style with a knee-length pencil skirt, tonal accessories, and pointed-toe heels—her look elevated by her jacket’s subtly flared hem.

Meanwhile, Gen Z actress Jenna Ortega put her own spin on the trend, opting for an all-black ensemble that married classic sophistication with a contemporary edge. Styling her peplum blazer with shoulder-high gloves, semi-sheer tights, and sleek heels, Ortega proved that this refined piece has multi-generational appeal.

I often find myself drawn to Jennifer Lopez's style. Whether dressing down in ultra-baggy jeans or going all out in an elegant dress and tall heels, the singer and actor's outfits always retain a polished edge that keeps her looking classy no matter the occasion.

While shopping in Paris this week, Lopez struck the perfect balance between her ultra-relaxed and hyper-glamorous style personalities. For her time in what many would call the most stylish city in the world, Lopez selected a shirtdress in a light ivory shade that featured mid-length sleeves, a perky collar, and a cinched-in waist from which a voluminous skirt flared out. Wearing the dress partially unbuttoned and styled with subtle jewels, a skinny belt, and black cat-eye sunglasses, Lopez looked the picture of a classic film star.

Genuinely easy to wear, a shirtdress doesn't require layers of accessories to achieve a high-end finish. In fact, I'd argue less is more in this situation. Lopez has become a firm fan of the silhouette in recent weeks, having already worn a chic gray iteration a couple of weeks ago. Inspired by her recent looks, I think it's high time I added a fit-and-flare shirtdress to my own wardrobe, and handily, I've already spotted plenty of chic contenders.

Every summer, my friends ask me about the trendiest open-toe shoes, and every year, I have the same answer: classic, strappy sandals. Because modern couture is inaccessible to most consumers and there's so much happening in the world, it's only natural for most to ask, Is haute couture really that serious? I'd never surmise that it would have the weight that so many other topics do in the world, but I'd also never discount its influence. Like it or not, couture has often acted as a reflection of current times—it can tell us what's happening in the stars and the stock exchange. Long before something blows up on TikTok, you better believe its origins can be traced back to couture fashion week.

The essence of what's fashionable always comes back to haute couture because it's about the craft of making clothing. It's not about hyperconsumption; it's about the art. That feels particularly topical as more conversations in the cultural canon center on the idea of adopting the quiet luxury ethos—the shift from keeping up with trends to investing in timeless items. Couture offers people a permission slip to escape from the never-ending trend cycle, and it's a way to fall in love with well-made clothing again. At best, couture can make us see the world in a new light or, at the very least, change our wardrobes. After hours of image research, I've narrowed down the six best spring/summer 2024 couture collections based on how they made haute couture feel relatable to our everyday lives. Plus, I've identified three looks from each show that are easy to re-create with shopping recommendations. Prepare to become a lover of haute couture.

When it comes to crafting otherworldly creations, none do so like Schiaparelli. Since its inception in 1927 by Elsa Schiaparelli, the atelier has pushed the boundaries of how we see the universe, one surrealist piece at a time. That legacy has lived on through Daniel Roseberry, as the creative director often pays homage to the house's rich history—the recent haute couture collection being no exception. The brand's show notes explained that Schiaparelli was "famously preoccupied with astrology." That interest was present throughout the spring/summer 2024 collection. Roseberry nodded to the astrological shift into the age of Aquarius (astrologers define the era as a period of innovative technological advancements and social revolutions) by mixing old-world elements with new-world shapes.

For example, there were obvious nods to technological elements through a body-con dress encrusted in "pre-2007 technological artifacts" and the life-sized baby robot styled with a tank top and low-slung cargo pants. But then there are more abstract references to Roseberry's home state of Texas, embodied through cowboy boots, layered buckles, and denim. The pairing of the seemingly opposite aesthetics accurately reflects the dichotomy of living in the modern world. It can be hard to see the wires that connect the past to the future—or how haute couture and ready-to-wear exist on the same planet—yet Roseberry managed to do just that. It will arguably be one of the most defining haute couture collections of our time.

Style notes: Although it's unlikely that you'll be able to get your hands on Schiaparelli's lifelike robot baby, the look above is easy to re-create in your everyday life.

Although couture is supposed to exist outside the realm of everyday clothing, the truth is that it doesn't. Couture reflects the space around us. It might not be what we wear daily, but it can connect us profoundly. Of course, not every maison can connect those dots for us, but not every brand has the same influence as Alaïa. Founded by Azzedine Alaïa in 1964, the Parisian atelier has a long history of using high-end craftsmanship to highlight the female form in an approachable way. That's no more apparent than with the brand's recent summer/fall 2024 couture show. Created by current Creative Director Pieter Mulier, it was, according to the brand, "based on the curve, on the circle, the curves of women, and circles of friends, of chosen family, an idea essential to the essence of Alaïa."

The idea of bringing curves to life is embodied through various silhouettes throughout the collection. Jeans came in a dramatic barrel cut to create a rounded shape. Similarly, multiple looks within the collection featured a unique technique in which single strands of merino wool yarn were draped to create circular-shaped skirts and dresses that moved as models walked. Even outside the realm of clothing silhouettes, we saw the concept brought full circle through accessories—reference the oversize bangles, pumps with arced heels, and handbags with sharp curves. The collection proved that the relationship between haute couture and ready-to-wear isn't linear. It's a curve. All of it is connected. You just have to have a master like Mulier to show you the way.

Style notes: Since full circle skirts were the focal point of much of the collection, re-creating the look requires keeping your styling minimal. Wear a neutral turtleneck and pumps to keep attention on the skirt and jewelry.

In recent years, there have been many conversations surrounding the future of high fashion. In an age where pragmatism is prioritized over idealism, being in the business of haute couture doesn't always translate. One atelier has managed to move the needle on the "dialogue between poetry and reality": Fendi. Since its inception in 1925, the Italian house has made the case for couture's place in contemporary life, but the brand's spring/summer 2024 couture show feels particularly reflective of that aim. As Artistic Director Kim Jones detailed in the show's notes, "In the collection, there is humanism at the heart of this future. There's the body, the silhouette within the silhouette, the person, and the handwork of the couture. The collection is about structure and decoration, where the two become indivisible. I wanted an idea of precision and emotion at once."

The aim to blur the lines between couture and prêt-à-porter was achieved through how the skills of artisans were used in conversation with classic silhouettes. For instance, the sharply tailored separates that have proliferated ready-to-wear collections over the last few seasons were elevated through exotic textiles and embroidery techniques. Similarly, the staple rib-knit dress was given a stylish upgrade through a knotting technique that creates a swaddle around the shoulders and bustier. Then there were the accessories, which took some of the more approachable Fendi items, including its popular baguette bag and eyewear, and gave them bespoke upgrades. The result was a collection that managed to connect the two worlds, harmonizing the past and the future in one Fendi collection.

Style notes: The key to making Fendi's couture collection feel much closer to home lies in accessories that pay homage to the show. A pair of rimless sunglasses styled with a tailored leather coat and pumps should do the trick.

It would be misguided to think that couture collections don't somehow inform our broader culture, especially since Chanel has proven otherwise. After Gabrielle Chanel swung open the doors of her atelier in 1910, the French fashion house helped shift almost every aspect of society throughout the 20th century. Chanel's couture collections have often existed at the nexus of culture—highlighting the intersection between high art, high fashion, and social hierarchies. Just to put it into perspective, Chanel released its signature tweed sets when it was socially unacceptable for women to wear suits. Before the ballet became an indication of highbrow art (or a trending fashion aesthetic), Chanel had close ties to the ballet, often creating for choreographers and dancers. Chanel couture has been a part of cultural movements, period.

That historical influence isn't lost on the brand's current creative director, Virginie Viard. When it came time to create the spring/summer 2024 collection, Viard was thinking about movement within the context of dance and beyond. We saw that reflected in Viard's showcasing of signature balletcore elements like tulle, ruffles, pleats, and lace throughout the collection. But it was not just the usage of bows and tights that made the collection feel reminiscent of dance; it was the ease of the clothing itself. With so much of traditional couture being, well, uncomfortable, it was refreshing to see buttoned blazers styled with tulle skirts and minidresses with tights. It felt emblematic of what Chanel has always been about—giving women the freedom to move. From that liberation comes a new way in which we're able to see haute couture's role in culture.

Style notes: You can't pay homage to Chanel couture without a classic tweed piece! Whether you opt for a dress or blazer, it will ensure you capture the essence of this brand.

Couture has always been in a constant state of evolution. In many ways, how we collectively define "couture" reflects the relationships humanity has with its clothing. Long before the industrial revolution, one could argue that all clothing could have been considered couture because there were no systemized clothing-production methods. Of course, the quality of clothing has always been a visual indicator of social class. On the whole, it was only after the democratization of fashion through industrialization that couture came into its distinct category, separate from ready-to-wear. One could argue that the French fashion house Dior helped shape that distinction. Throughout its almost 80-year tenure, the atelier has championed craftsmanship and challenged our perspective of clothing, including in its spring/summer 2024 couture collection.

As explained in the brand's notes, the show was called Big Aura because of how Creative Director Maria Grazia Chiuri sees the evolution of couture. She explained, "Haute couture is a perpetually fertile ground for contemplation where the reproduction of the original is never the same. Each piece is bound to be adapted to the body of the wearer and carries its own specific aura." We might live in the age of mass-produced fashion, but Grazia Chiuri reminds us that clothing should evolve with us. This was displayed throughout the show as various archival looks (e.g., blazers with nipped-in waists and capes made from moiré) were revised to make them feel contemporary. The result was a collection that exemplified the idea that couture serves as a collective memory.

Style notes: You can't pay homage to the long history of Dior couture without wearing at least one hourglass-shaped blazer—the silhouette is synonymous with the house's legacy.

No other brand has pushed the boundaries of how we view haute couture and how it influences the culture better than Jean Paul Gaultier. The eponymous label was founded by the French designer in 1982, quickly making waves in the fashion world for its unconventional, gender-fluid designs that challenged everything from traditional ideas surrounding beauty to what textiles can be considered high-end—Gaultier was one of the first designers to use denim in couture. His work was spotted in music videos and movies, cementing couture into the cultural canon in an unparalleled way. But the influence does not stop there. When Gaultier decided to retire in 2020, rather than shuttering the house, he decided to create collaboration collections with various designers each season.

With every collaboration, we've been able to see designers reimagine the rich archives of the house, and we're reminded that couture, like any art form, is meant to provoke and inspire. Simone Rocha managed to do both with her guest spring/summer 2024 couture collection. Nodding to sultry elements of the couture house, Rocha gave them a softer take. For example, Jean Paul Gaultier's iconic cross-laced corsetry came in the form of a satin pink dress. Similarly, the cone-shaped bustier that's synonymous with the brand's overall sensual aesthetic was affixed to a black dress with a nipped-in waist and ball gown–shaped skirt to create a subversive take on romantic fashion. Through the collaboration, Rocha was able to bring a new perspective to the couture house in a way that captivated the internet. It's served as a reminder that couture doesn't have to be out of reach—it can be a part of the conversation with the right creative vision behind it.

Style notes: We see the satin bra that's synonymous with Jean Paul Gaultier given a contemporary feel through the addition of embellishments by Simone Rocha.

If you thought Paris couldn't get any more magical, wait until you see what Couture Fashion Week 2024 brought to the City of Light. In a week of extravagant runway shows by some of the world's most talented design houses, Paris was alight with extraordinary theatrics for a brief few days. Whilst the shows brought high-drama design and spectacular creations, the city's streets were adorned in beauty themselves. Some show attendees favoured elaborate outfits when it came to dressing for the shows, whilst others experimented with elevated yet pared-back aesthetics, styling high-fashion looks that relied upon wearable staples.

6 STREET STYLE TRENDS FROM PARIS COUTURE WEEK 2024

1. DRAMATIC SHOULDER PADS

Style Notes: Adding a structural element to a simple silhouette, a roomy blazer with sharp shoulder pads is a foolproof way to add a hint of drama to your wardrobe rotation. That it's a look you could easily thrift—you'll find plenty of these silhouettes stuffed into Parisian vintage stores, as well as British charity shops—only adds to its appeal.

Style Notes: This season, longline pencil skirts are back on the fashion agenda (we've already spotted French women wearing them nonstop). Wear with sleek kitten heels or dainty ballet flats.

Style Notes: Showgoers protected themselves against January's persistent breezes in the chicest way possible—with scarves built into their outerwear. Of course, this trend isn't new (we've all been lusting after Toteme's original for a while now), but I'm pleased to see it's going the distance.

Style Notes: A mainstay in the wardrobe of any fashion person from October until April, luxe leather trousers look so chic with a classic button-down, and can also be styled with a silk blouse or cashmere knit. This season, (according to Paris anyway), it's all about relaxed-leg silhouettes.

Style Notes: Nothing elevates a simple outfit like the addition of a relaxed Bardot neckline. For its simple yet sophisticated silhouette, the timeless design is a favourite during fashion week, but especially in Paris—I always see French women with their shoulders out.

Style Notes: High-impact, low-effort outfits are everywhere at any fashion week (especially from those jetting in from out of town who have minimal suitcase space). A matching skirt set offers an elegant ensemble that will always look polished without too much thought.

Next Up: The Only Spring/Summer 2024 Fashion Trends I'm Bothered About

Throughout her long career in Hollywood, Jennifer Lopez has always dared to wear ensembles that some might consider risqué or controversial, from her iconic Versace jungle dress from the Grammys in 2000 (and again on the runway at the brand's S/S 20 show) to the button-down shirt and denim thigh-high boots she chose for a casual day out in NYC back in 2018. It shouldn't come as a huge surprise that she arrived at the venue for the Schiaparelli couture show in Paris wearing a very elevated take on the much-debated pants-less trend that's been garnering attraction since its big debut at Bottega Veneta's S/S 23 show. 

This is what I mean by elevated: For the occasion, Lopez—who worked with her longtime stylists Mariel Haenn and Rob Zangardi and Schiaparelli Creative Director Daniel Roseberry to build the look—wore black tights cinched at the waist with a large '80s-inspired gold belt, an embroidered turtleneck sweater, and sky-high black stilettos. But the excitement didn't stop there. On top, she added a handcrafted and custom-made white coat made of over 7000 real rose petals that, according to Lopez, were kept alive using sugar water.

At the show, Lopez's work-of-art outerwear clearly stole the show, but in photos posted beforehand by Haenn, the singer and actor's pants-less ensemble was on full display. Sure, the trend isn't exactly subtle, but after looking through each image, the controversial aspects of it have begun to slip away. After all, who could argue that Lopez needed to wear true pants with this look or needed to change anything about it at all? I, for one, don't have a single note for her, her styling team, or Roseberry.

Every time that Zendaya goes into hiding for a while, her return to the public eye is never subtle, at least not when it comes to her outfit for the occasion. Instead, her reappearance always comes in the most grandeur of fashions, and this time around is no exception. 

Apart from a few one-off paparazzi sightings, Zendaya's been pretty off the grid lately, but she broke this trend this morning when she arrived at the Schiaparelli couture show in Paris donning what can only be described as a masterpiece. At the show—alongside her stylist Law Roach, her Euphoria co-star Hunter Schafer, and Jennifer Lopez—the Dune star chose a black, fitted mock-neck top decorated with tiny satin knot details along the sleeves that she paired with a floor-length skirt that featured draped fabric across the waist and a long tail-like train. She added fishnet knee-high socks and a pair of black suede Louboutins.

The obvious centerpiece of the look was the skirt, which was made of duchesse satin. The fabric was prominent on the runway at Schiaparelli's couture show as well as in a bevy of spring/summer 2024 collections, including memorable appearances at Altuzarra, Tory Burch, Sportmax, Carven, and Louis Vuitton. Without a doubt, the road ahead for the devastatingly elegant material is bright and long.

Paris Couture Fashion Week for the F/W 23 season just wrapped up, and it's time to recap. Specifically, we should discuss street style. As expected, the show attendees really leaned into the quiet luxury trend with their chosen outfits, accessories, and the trends they chose to wear. This provided a contrast to the often extravagant looks that populate the runways during Couture Week, and it was refreshing to see, especially when fashion week street style is typically very showy.

Paris's fashion weeks, especially Couture Week, are typically fancier compared to some other cities' fashion weeks, but I spotted quite a few simple, even casual, looks this time around. However, that didn't make them any less luxurious. Among those low-key looks, I spotted several stand-out quiet luxury items repeated in photos from the week. Runway collections aren't always the easiest things to mimic on the cheap, and I'm just referring to ready-to-wear. Couture pieces are infinitely more difficult, with each garment being handmade and intentional down to the littlest detail. Never is this more apparent than at Schiaparelli's shows, which, thanks to the brand's creative director Daniel Roseberry and its founder Elsa Schiaparelli's legacy, are famously extravagant and artistic. But for its fall/winter 2023/2024 couture show, which took place in Paris just days ago, one small aspect of the offering allows me to get the Schiaparelli aesthetic for just $6.

The magic is in a stretchy, black headband, something that everyone knows you can buy on the cheap at a variety of venues, from Target to CVS to H&M. The simple hair accessory was worn close to the face at the Schiaparelli show, blocking any flyaways from even daring to surface. It was styled with extravagant and inventive couture garments, from a black-and-white hooded minidress with a sculpture-like skirt to a delicate-lace gown fit with one of the most impressive corsets I've seen. Though these looks will be harder to re-create IRL, they can inspire the color palette and silhouettes that will make for the chicest headband-clad ensembles.

As much as people like to say that fashion people only wear black, that hasn't really been the case in recent years. Phew! We're still catching our breath from the whirlwind month that has been January. The top of the year not only marks the beginning of the annual award season marathon—and our extensive red carpet coverage—but it’s also the start of a months-long fashion week trek, kicking off with the men’s F/W 2023 shows in Milan and Paris and Couture Week. Not that we’re complaining! The four-week stretch offers up a delightful sartorial platter of noteworthy style moments. And taking us behind the scenes of all the action this year is Norwegian model Gustav Magnar Witzøe.

If you are not familiar with Witzøe yet, you’re going to want to take note. An emerging talent in the fashion space, the 30-year-old has caught the eye of some of the industry’s biggest brands and designers, landing him front-row seating at the likes of Loewe, Louis Vuitton, Rick Owens, Armani, and Schiaparelli, to name a few. And then there’s the not-so-insignificant fact that he’s been working with image architect Law Roach, one of the industry’s most influential stylists. Attending the shows together, the two curated a portfolio of dapper looks that showcased the many sides of Witzøe’s personal style—think drapey suits, acid-wash denim, and avant-garde footwear. With a photographer in tow, Witzøe documented some of the highlights from his trip abroad. And lucky us, we have the exclusive.

Next, Apple Martin made her official debut at the Chanel Couture show. 

For better or for worse, fashion moves fast. The industry is constantly shifting—there's always a new label worth knowing about or a trend that's managed to take over TikTok overnight. Add to that how fashion's collection calendar has shifted from seasonal drops to fast production models that allow weekly new arrivals. While couture shows have been over for over a week now, I've been unable to stop thinking about them—partly because I love any excuse to dress up, but also because of what makes couture so special. Unlike everyday clothing, these pieces are often handmade for months by artisans and can cost a large amount of money to produce and buy. The very nature of couture is that it's not necessarily meant to live within the realm of functionality; it's pure fashion. And while not all of us will be pulling up to a red carpet in a custom couture frock, paying attention to what's happening in ateliers can tell us what will be the next big thing. So, in that vein, I've rounded up the 9 best looks from Paris haute couture week that are bound to define the rest of the year. Plus, I've shopped them out for less because c'est la vie. 

Schiaparelli, Look 23

Surrealist influences have begun to resurface on recent runways, but the atelier that cemented the avant-garde movement into garments was the one-and-only Schiaparelli. Founded by the Italian designer Elsa Schiaparelli in 1927, this couture label caused a few heads to turn for its often groundbreaking gowns that were tied to major movements in the art world. Since Elsa's passing, the house has undergone its own renaissance with the appointment of artistic director Daniel Roseberry.

Schiaparelli has begun to bloom again (pun fully intended), and its recent couture collection is proof of that. With a focus on sharp '80s tailoring paired with sumptuous velvets and satins embroidered with flowers and finished off with hats from Stephen Jones, each look was a budding concoction of pure beauty. And a reminder that couture should not only reflect the world around us but inspire us to see it in a new light.

Valentino, Look 46

When it comes to couture houses that continue to have a hold on the culture, you can’t leave Valentino out of the conversation. While most may know the brand for its luxury handbags and ready-to-wear collections, it became the pinnacle of high fashion because of its couture collections. Founded by the late Valentino Clemente Ludovico Garavani in 1959, the designer quickly caught the attention of icons like Jacqueline Kennedy and Audrey Hepburn because of his signature gowns.

Since then, the brand has risen to even higher heights under the helm of creative director Pierpaolo Piccioli—see the F/W 2022 collection as proof. A diverse set of models made their way down Rome’s Spanish Steps in theatric frocks—aka purple feather gowns paired with leather gloves or a full-length Valentino red chiffon duster paired with low-rise matching trousers. Leaving us with a collection that will have us buzzing for years to come.

Jean Paul Gaultier, Look 20

Not to sound like a broken record, but couture houses are so interwoven with broader pop culture, especially when talking about Jean Paul Gaultier. The French prêt-à-porter founded his namesake label in 1982 and became known for his unconventional gender-fluid designs that push the boundaries of how we view couture, ready-to-wear, and even beauty. He was one of the first haute couture designers to play with denim, and he designed Madonna's lingerie-inspired 1990 Blonde Ambition tour looks. Gaultier's perfume (Le Male fragrance) was a best-selling fragrance, and he even created costumes for films like The Fifth Element. Basically, Gaultier stitched himself into the lexicon in a way that no other designer has. And while he recently stepped down in 2020, he's now using his label to champion other fellow designers each season.

The most recent one is a one-off haute couture collection created by Balmain's Creative Director, Olivier Rousteing. Featuring nods to Gaultier's history as a designer (see the championing of matelot stripes or corsets throughout the collection), this show was further proof that couturiers don't follow the culture or even patterns; they create it.

Fendi, Look 4

Is there a brand more synonymous with luxury than Fendi? Since its founding by Adele and Edoardo Fendi in 1925, this luxury label has influenced every aspect of the fashion industry. In part, that's due to the dynamic leaders behind the brand who have made luxury feel as if it could be an attainable part of everyday life. You can see that throughout the label's history, including when Karl Lagerfield served as the brand's artistic director and launched the brand's ready-to-wear collection. Or when Silvia Venturini Fendi, the creative director of accessories and only family member still at the helm of the label, created the baguette bag.

But more recently, you can see that through the artistic director Kim Jones's recent couture collection. Of course, the elements make this collection luxurious—like using wools like Vicuna to create the suits or full-length beaded gowns. But if you look closely, you can see through the focus on classic silhouettes (like suiting and T-shirt–inspired tops), Fendi makes high-fashion feel functional.

Chanel, Look 3

There's a common misconception that for couture to be couture, it must not be utilitarian, but like always, Chanel challenges that narrative. The eponymous label was founded by couturière Gabrielle Coco Chanel in 1910 and changed how we view and define modern fashion. Chanel was groundbreaking not just because she was a woman running her luxury label in a time where that was uncommon, but because her work changed the very nature of how women dress. Using luxurious fabrics (like tweed, jersey, and boulcé) in functional silhouettes was unheard of. And this legacy was further pushed by the late Karl Largerfeld, who served as the house's creative director for over 36 years and has since been taken up by his right-hand successor, Virginie Viard.

While critics online may have asked, "Is this couture?" upon further inspection, you can see how Viard pays homage to the nonchalant nature of Coco's original collections. She not only pulled inspiration from the archives (evident in '30s-inspired hemlines), but she also took timeless silhouettes and loosened them up for comfort. The result is a collection that reminds us that true luxury isn't necessarily splashy; it's found in the details.

Alexandre Vauthier, Look 9

There comes a point with every couture house that the brand itself eclipses its founders and is cemented a part of fashion's lexicon—the next couturière to attain star status is Alexandre Vauthier. In some ways, this maîson already has as his pieces have been spotted on celebrities like Rihanna and Kendall Jenner. But considering that he founded his namesake label in 2008 after working under Thierry Mugler and Jean Paul Gaultier and was officially cemented as an independent couture brand in 2014 by the Chambre Syndicale de la Haute-Couture, he's still "fresh" compared to other ateliers.

But that's in no way a bad thing because that freshness can be seen in his approach to design—sharply tailored suits have provocative elements like deep V-necks and dramatic '80s shoulders, dresses champion draping, and asymmetrical hemlines alongside sequins and cobalt hues. The result is a collection that feels like it's taken couture into the future and cemented Vauthier as someone who will influence the industry for years to come.

Antonio Grimaldi, Look 23

What makes couture special compared to everyday clothing comes back to the details, and that’s something that couturière Antonio Grimaldi clearly understands. He began designing in 1996 but decided to find his namesake label in 2010. While other couture houses may have been founded in the late nineteenth century, this designer is arguably bringing haute couture methods into this century. Grimaldi does that through his innate ability to balance modernity and antiquity—seen through sharp asymmetrical hemlines paired with overly feminine and often intricately-adorned pieces (like the look above). This attentiveness to detail translates to a body of work that pays homage to the long history of haute couture and allows us to inject dreaminess into our daily lives.

Viktor & Rolf, Look 31

Tailoring, and by extension, suiting, have always been a consequential part of haute couture—after all, stitching can single-handily change how a garment fits our form. So it is no surprise that we'd find suiting in couture collections, including Viktor & Rolf's F/W 22 collection. But in proper form to these couturiers' provocative perspective to design, these weren't your typical suits. The show's first half featured over-the-top structured collars and constricted hemlines, while the second half still featured oversize collars but were styled with big button-downs and relaxed trousers.

And while you may be thinking, "Okay, but we knew relaxed suiting was happening," what makes this collection noteworthy is how Viktor Horsting and Rolf Snoeren can continuously use couture practices to challenge the way we think. Whether that's repositioning how we view the confines of masculinity through suiting or what role couture at large plays in culture, Viktor & Rolf, time and time again, connects the threds for us all.

Georges Hobeika, Look 32

While couture is at its core about creating without limits, to say that the industry has always been forward-thinking would be far-fetched. But that doesn’t mean a new wave of couturiers isn’t changing that—in fact, Georges Hobeika is doing just that. The Lebanese designer founded his namesake couture and ready-to-wear label in 1995 and made history as the first Arab designer, along with his son and co-creative director, Jad, to stage a runway show at Paris couture week.

But that’s not the only forward movement you can account for this designer—its work has constantly featured innovative design techniques (including airbrushed pieces in their recent collection). It’s not just how they design or who they are that makes them noteworthy—it’s what they’re creating. You can see full-length cerulean hand-painted gowns besides body-con sequin and feather-adorned dresses and understand that the best couture can not only push the industry forward but make you excited at the prospects of dressing up again.

The Fall 2022 couture shows got underway this week, with Schiaparelli, Christian Dior, and most recently, Balenciaga, all displaying their most luxurious collections of the year across Paris. But as it so often does, Chanel stole the show. There were no celebrity appearances on the runway or avant-garde ensembles—that's not really the Chanel way. Rather, creative director Virginie Viard did what she—and Chanel—does best: design ridiculously pretty things that no one (myself included) can resist.

Among the collection's maxi-length tweed skirts, puddle pants, and hyper-feminine A-line skirts were a plethora of delicate black and ivory bows that rested atop many of the models' heads, including that of Chanel's finale bride Jill Kortleve. Of course, bows have always been a part of the French brand's aesthetic, but something about this season's take felt fresh and undeniably buy-worthy. That is, if you can afford to purchase a Chanel accessory, let alone one that's couture.

More than ever, I've been thinking of fashion as a refreshing and enjoyable escape from real life. And nothing is as fun as scrolling through photos of extravagant, artful couture looks that practically belong in a museum. Luckily, it's officially Couture Week in Paris right now, with designers like Chanel and Valentino presenting spring 2021 collections. The settings might be more subdued than normal, but rest assured, the sumptuous outfits are anything but.

The Chanel show was a saccharine delight with frothy pink confections, diaphanous dresses, and all-around beautiful pieces. Valentino, on the other hand, invested more into slinky metallic gowns with occasional pops of vibrant colors like turquoise and yellow. Giambattista Valli, Iris van Herpen, and Schiaparelli also outdid themselves this season, especially considering the many quarantine restrictions. Though Chanel is known for its elaborate sets, transforming the Grand Palais in Paris into everything from a seaside with sand and lapping waves to a snow-covered winter village, the latest couture collection put the designs into full focus. Without an audience in attendance due to social-distancing guidelines, the collection was presented digitally as a lookbook photographed by Mikael Jansson instead of a runway show. But if you’re still looking for opulence, you’ll find it in the designs by Virginie Viard.

In a bit of an homage to Karl Lagerfeld, she infused his signature rock-romanticism—voluminous gowns with stacks of rings and fuchsia tweed with smudged eyeliner. "I was thinking about a punk princess coming out of ‘Le Palace’ at dawn,” said Viard in a press release. "With a taffeta dress, big hair, feathers and lots of jewelry. This collection is more inspired by Karl Lagerfeld than Gabrielle Chanel. Karl would go to ‘Le Palace,’ he would accompany these very sophisticated and very dressed up women, who were very eccentric too.”

Sun's out; new trends are out! The fashion set have taken a break from vacation travel season to descend upon Paris for Haute Couture Fashion Week, and it doesn't look like they've traveled light. Suitcases full of the latest looks have already been plundered for new goods and fresh combinations over the past couple of days, and it's proving to be a useful boost for our current summer wardrobes. 

There are many new-season trends we've already become well acquainted with, but there's always room for something different, and this lot are already jumping ahead of what's popular right now in order to inject a little excitement into your hot-weather lineup. 

Couture Week is always more elaborate and decadent than the other fashion weeks when it comes to the fashion both on and off the runway, so we've decided to double down on the looks we'd genuinely be able to imitate or be inspired from IRL. From the two most unusual trending colors the front row are backing (although, there's no sign of a letup from beige) to the little accessory switches that appear to be making all the difference, here's what's going to be in in no time at all.

Pink has been popular in fashion circles for a long time now, but a specific shade is bubbling up at the moment. Worn in one block, like Elena Perminova here, can be rather striking.

But it also looks cool mixed with other power pastels, as with Tiffany Hsu's retro suit and open-collared shirt here.

For obvious reasons, Chanel Couture shows are always a magnet for celebrities and some of the fashion world's most stylish It girls. Show attendees jump at the chance to deck themselves out in Chanel, and today's F/W 19 showing was no exception. Anna Wintour is a front-row fixture at every Chanel show, including today's (which marked the first couture show for the label's new creative director, Virginie Viard). For the occasion, Wintour wore her usual printed dress and nude sandals, but she subtly added a piece she doesn't normally wear to shows: a white T-shirt. Wintour layered the tee under her shirtdress and, of course, wasn't without her usual statement necklaces and sunglasses. It was undoubtedly the least-sloppy way to wear a white T-shirt and proves it will always be the number one wardrobe staple.

When someone asks about the influence of Asian culture on the fashion industry, it's common to point to the label on the back of your shirt reading "Made in China/India/Thailand." But the impact of Asian heritage and Asian designers in fashion goes far beyond clothing labels. Some of the most prominent designers in the industry are of Asian descent, and Asia has also been the birthplace of many important technological advancements, such as the discovery of silk. Although Asia has contributed greatly to the world of fashion and technology, the term "Asian" fails to capture the diversity of nationalities, ethnicities, cultures, and styles within it.

The fashion industry has a long history of failing to represent marginalized groups, and it's crucial that we continue to be allies, particularly to the Asian American and Pacific Islander communities. This is especially important in light of the recent increase in anti-Asian hate crimes.

While some brands are donating proceeds to AAPI organizations, it's important to recognize that this is not enough. As fashion lovers, the easiest way we can actively fight racism is by learning about and shopping for pieces from the AAPI community. Ahead, we're highlighting some of the designers, both from the United States and abroad, who showcase not only a range of fashion designs but also humanity. Bibhu Mohapatra

No one does evening wear quite like Bibhu Mohapatra. The Indian-born designer is known for his exquisitely detailed and colorful evening gowns that make jaws drop. His talent and contribution to the industry have earned him a seat on the CFDA board, and he remains one of India's most beloved designers. Mohapatra's designs have even caught the eye of former First Lady Michelle Obama. While his pieces are only available online, he continues to showcase India's budding talent and leave a mark on the global fashion industry.

Yohji Yamamoto

Let it be known: Nobody quite did it like the late and beloved Japanese designer Yohji Yamamoto. His mastery of tailoring and avant-garde designs has expanded the way we dress through deconstructed androgynous pieces since the '70s. Which other designers can take a traditional piece and make it camp without it having to be worn to the Met Gala? Yamamoto's work, though often in black, is the most provocative. His tenure has continuously made us question what constitutes a quality piece and what our clothing says about us.

Issey Miyake

Born in Hiroshima, Japan, Issey Miyake was one of the original designers who paved the way for Asian designers to take center stage in the international fashion world. Miyake began his career working at Givenchy and then started his own brand, Miyake Design Studio, in the '80s. Through experimentation, he became known for his iconic thinly pleated pieces. While he passed away on August 5, 2022, his pleated pieces and his legacy of being a maverick continue to inspire the fashion industry.

Kenzō Takada

It's hard to imagine what the fashion industry would be like today if Kenzō Takada had listened to society's expectations and not pursued a career in design. Growing up in Tokyo, it was taboo for a man to work in the fashion industry, and Takada wasn't even allowed to attend design school. But that didn't stop him from moving to Paris and starting his own brand. He disrupted cultural norms and created ready-to-wear collections 45 years before they became widely adopted in the industry. Takada was also the first designer to feature his groundbreaking, over-the-top floral patterns in the European-dominated couture space at the time. Although he passed away in October 2020, his legacy as one of the first "outsiders" to bring Asian design to the cultural forefront lives on.

Humberto Leon and Carol Lim of Opening Ceremony

If there were a fashion power duo, Humberto Leon and Carol Lim would undoubtedly fit the bill. Though not a traditional power couple, their friendship and work have made a significant impact on the industry. Back in the 2000s, it was rare to find a brand that committed itself to making fashion exploratory and creating space for emerging artists, as Opening Ceremony did. While Leon and Lim's careers have since evolved—they've stepped down as creative directors for LVMH’s Kenzo brand and shuttered their retail stores to focus solely on their own label—there's no denying the enduring impact they've had on the fashion world.

Joseph Altuzarra

Few designers have mastered the art of creating feminine yet tailored clothing quite like Joseph Altuzarra. Born and raised in Paris, with a professional background that includes stints at fashion giants like Marc Jacobs and Proenza Schouler, this multicultural designer's creations exude a blend of French sophistication and practical American-girl charm. What's truly remarkable about Altuzarra is that, as an Asian designer, he creates clothing that appeals to a wide variety of people from diverse backgrounds. This quality is what sets him apart and makes his work so special.

Prabal Gurung

When we consider designers who not only draw inspiration from their cultural roots to inspire their work but also leverage their creations to uplift communities, Prabal Gurung comes to mind. Despite being based in New York, the Nepalese American designer consistently uses his work to raise awareness for global issues. In addition to crafting stunning, consciousness-raising clothing, Gurung established a foundation to support underprivileged children in Nepal and is committed to generating sustainable job opportunities and income. In essence, this designer is transforming the world, one garment at a time.

Anna Sui

Unlike some other designers, Anna Sui isn’t afraid to do things differently. In fact, her entry into starting her own line was spurred by getting fired and having savings of $300. But with friends like Pat McGrath and Steven Meisel encouraging her and models like Linda Evangelista and Naomi Campbell walking her runway, Sui was bound for success. Her success, however, didn’t come from stars like Madonna wearing her looks (though, that helped). In truth, Sui was unafraid to dip her toes into grunge or into trends people would consider "ugly.” She carved out a niche for herself that allowed her to break through the noise to make the world more colorful.

Vera Wang

Anyone who dreams of having a wedding one day has probably heard of Vera Wang. But what many don’t know is that, unlike other designers, her first career wasn’t in design. In fact, she wanted to be a figure skater. But after not making the Olympic team, she went on to work at Vogue. Shortly after that, she designed her own wedding dress, and the rest was history. Although Vera's path to becoming the iconic designer she is today was tumultuous, her journey since then has been showered with accolades. She has expanded beyond designing wedding dresses and has become a cultural icon in her own right.

Derek Lam

Look up the word "polished" in the dictionary, and a piece from Derek Lam’s collection should appear. Before the American-born designer became known for his work, established his spinoff brand 10 Crosby Street, and even won the CFDA Swarovski Perry Ellis Award; Lam started his career in the '90s working for Michael Kors. His coming of age during a time of uncertainty in the fashion world may have been what led him to create timeless pieces that continue to endure.

Jason Wu

If you can remember that stunning white dress Michelle Obama wore the night of the inaugural ball in 2009, that was by none other than Jason Wu. Since that moment, Wu has become a force in his own right, including having his work featured in the First Ladies Collection at the Smithsonian’s National Museum of American History. But don’t be fooled; that’s not all he’s been up to. He’s had collaborations with Target, Bergdorf Goodman, and even Eloquii. Basically, Wu is one for the history books.

Phillip Lim

It should be noted that Phillip Lim did not even think being a designer was an option. In fact, he started his journey by studying business and economics. The call to design eventually lead him to start 3.1 Phillip Lim in the fall of 2005, and while some designers work under the helm of other houses, Lim jumped right in and has only designed for himself throughout his career, which makes his work so sincerely his. After all, no one quite nails the balance of duality quite like Lim.

Sandy Liang

Sandy Liang may be a newcomer to the game, but don’t get it twisted. You need to keep your eyes on this young designer. She started by interning under Jason Wu, Phillip Lim, and Opening Ceremony, but eventually took the leap and started her own brand. Since then, her granny-chic aesthetic (inspired by her grandmother) has garnered a unique following. While her work pays tribute to her roots, ultimately, she designs the type of clothes you find any New York girl wearing on the subway: a little bit practical, a little bit quirky, and totally chic.

Huishan Zhang

Some of the greatest talent in the industry is coming from China at the moment, and Huishan Zhang is one of them. While newer to the industry, the London-based designer has become known for his ability to meld Eastern and Western styles to create feminine, classic pieces inspired by history. While he might pay tribute to the past through silhouettes and themes, Huishan Zhang is definitely the future of fashion.

Han Chong of Self-Portrait

Self-Portrait has become a beloved brand by many in recent years, including Beyoncé and the Duchess of Sussex. Started by Malaysian-born designer Han Chong in 2013, the brand had a rapid rise to success, which can be attributed to the fact that his work fills a gap within the industry. His designer pieces are achievable both in the fiscal and physical sense, and who doesn’t love a brand that you can wear to a royal wedding or your best friend’s wedding?

Guo Pei

While Guo Pei was well-known among the Glimmerati of China, she wasn’t a player on the international stage until Rihanna came out stunting her stunning yellow gown at the Met Gala in 2015. Honestly, we’re so grateful to Rihanna for it because Guo Pei is the couture designer of our dreams. Finding inspiration from embroidery, fairytales, and painting traditions that date back thousands of years, Guo Pei’s work is always larger than life and embodies what couture is. The question is, will she create a ready-to-wear collection in the future? And if not, how can we get away with wearing one of her pieces to Trader Joe’s?

Laura Kim of Monse

Early on in her career, Korean designer Laura Kim was someone everyone knew to keep their eyes on. Not only did she win scholarships from the CDFA, but she was also asked by Oscar de la Renta himself to join the team after interning. Her decade tenure as studio director allowed her to meet Dominican-born designer Fernando Garcia, who became a close friend and eventually a partner. Together, they went on to launch their first brand, Monse, and after two years were brought back to the helm of de la Renta. While Kim co-designs for both brands and her partnership with Garcia defines what it means to be a power couple, let it be known that Laura Kim is a badass in her own right. This woman continuously shows her ability to shift from brand to brand and that her talent cannot be limited.

Chitose Abe of Sacai

Chitose Abe has been in the design game for a minute, but she’s not quite followed the same path as her popular Japanese predecessors. She began by working as a pattern maker at Comme des Garçons until giving birth to her child. From there on, she was slow to grow her brand, Sacai. While most would assume this is a terrible strategy to keep her brand under the radar by not immediately opening stores or showing in Paris, it’s paid off. Not only does Abe approach the growth of her business differently, but she also designs pieces that combine the discipline of textural Japanese pieces with the practicality of everyday life.

Rei Kawakubo of Comme des Garçons

It would be a travesty to define Rei Kawakubo just as a Japanese designer. While she did grow up in Tokyo and rose to the international stage around the same time as some of her counterparts, this woman would detest such an unoriginal definition of her, and it does not behoove her influence. Her work can be viewed at the same level as Coco Chanel—forever altering the way women dress and giving us permission to explore the boundaries of gender, body, and femininity through vanguard, deconstructed pieces. No other designer has really ever pulled off the extensive amount of changes and exploratory work that Kawakubo has from season to season. After all, it doesn't get more exploratory than Rihanna's Met Gala look. Kawakubo has become known for her ability to not only rebel against the norm but to make us question it as well.

And isn't that the mark of a designer that's truly changed the fashion industry? One that's able to design pieces that are not only seared into the cultural zeitgeist but deeply moving? There's no denying their impact, it's in every stitch.

Grace Ling

There's no denying that Grace Ling has been making waves in the fashion industry lately. Last year, she won the Inaugural 2024 CFDA x Genesis House Innovation Grant, became a CFDA Vogue Fashion Fund Finalist, and received the 2024 CVFF x Gap Inc Award. Accomplishments aside, Grace Ling, the Singapore-born designer, has been pioneering the fashion landscape with her eccentric and elegant designs that prioritize femininity. Her label seamlessly fuses technology with traditional craft methods, as evident in the 3D-printed metal pieces and sculptural silhouettes.

Yuni Buffa

If you're a fashion insider, you've likely heard of Yuni Buffa. For those who haven’t, let us introduce this emerging Asian designer. Yuni Buffa is a five-year-old footwear brand, named after its designer, which creates both modern and classic styles, ranging from trendy quilted pumps to timeless leather ballet flats. Every part of production comes from local sources, utilizing high-quality leathers and custom hardware with the goal of creating the most comfortable and stylish pairs. Focusing on a sustainable approach, Buffa produces in limited quantities. This simple and thoughtful process reflects the brand’s style, which is inspired by '90s minimalism.

Couture week is shaping up to have some of the buzziest fashion moments of the year. We've already seen Olivia Palermo (and her curious choice of footwear), Brigitte Macron in skinny jeans, and, of course, all the magical Chanel couture runway looks. In case you’re wondering when excitement over ’90s fashion will dial down, the answer is: not any time soon. The decade has inspired us to change up our personal wardrobes, has made us reconsider style stars who were killing it in a time when social media didn’t exist, and has simply made us revisit glamorous moments for much-welcomed nostalgia.
