Among a sea of viral Coachella concert videos and outfit posts, there is one moment from this year's festival that is perhaps more monumental, impactful, and noteworthy than the rest. This year, Karol G became the first Latina to headline Coachella in the festival’s 27-year history. That's a pretty big deal. A Spanish-language reggaeton music artist from Medellín Colombia, Karol G sings the majority of her songs entirely in Spanish. Some of her biggest hits include "TQG" featuring fellow Colombian singer Shakira, "Qlona" featuring Mexican artist Peso Pluma, and "Provenza."

Her headlining Coachella was monumental not only because of the representation she'd bring, but also because her presence is set against the backdrop of how Latin Americans and immigrants in the United States have been continuously targeted in the past year.

Not to mention that Latin Americans are a monumental part of the U.S. and its culture with over 60 million speakers in the United States, making it the second-largest Spanish-speaking nation in the world after Mexico. Or, that Latin Americans contribute multiple trillions of dollars to the U.S. GDP annually and, from 2019 to 2023, drove around 30% of the country's GDP growth. Overall, spending power among Hispanic and Latin American consumers is growing faster than the rest of the U.S. economy. But alas.

However, even if you don't speak Spanish and hadn't even heard of Karol G until Coachella, her global influence—especially, for the purpose of this article, when it comes to fashion—is undeniable.

Take, for example, how orange was turning out to be the color of the year in 2025. Based on my analysis back in May, orange was around 55% more popular versus the same time the previous year. Despite it being a summer color that would naturally see a seasonal resurgence, people were really into orange.

Why? Well, there were many cultural moments simultaneously happening outside of fashion altogether that were driving this craze. McLaren was picking up top Formula One wins in its orange car; celebrities were going viral sitting courtside at NY Knicks games wearing orange and blue; and of course, Karol G had just announced her latest album, Tropicoqueta, its first single, and her new era—all in a signature shade of orange. Suddenly, orange was everywhere.

If you think this correlation and Karol G's influence on the color are random, they're actually not. First, Spanish-language reggaeton music has been dominating music charts worldwide for some time now. According to Spotify, in the past five years, streams of reggaeton music have increased 110% in the U.S., and streams of Latin music in general have grown around 165% globally. Whoa.

Plus, the proof of reggaeton's impact on fashion is all around us too. Bad Bunny has a long-standing partnership with Adidas and teased his new sneakers for the brand during his Super Bowl performance back in February. Puerto Rican rapper Young Miko is the star of Gap's latest campaign. Two of the world's biggest luxury beauty brands recently named reggaeton artists as fragrance ambassadors: YSL Beauty with Colombian rapper Feid and Prada Beauty with Puerto Rican singer Rauw Alejandro. Karol G—alongside Madison Beer, K-Pop group TWICE, and Missy Elliott—performed at last fall's Victoria's Secret Fashion Show.

With the announcement that Karol G would be headlining Coachella, I knew her style and fashion moments would carry a lot of influence. I showed up several hours early to her Coachella weekend one headlining set so I could claim a spot near the front of the crowd just to witness her fashion and this historic performance in person. And it was worth it. Wearing several looks styled by Brett Alan Nelson, Karol G used her Coachella fashion to not just amplify her own performance, but also to drive home the importance of this monumental cultural moment.

For example, while singing the title track of her latest album, Tropicoqueta, Karol stepped onstage in a colorful custom Etro set and custom headpiece from Dominican-American brand Luar. (You might remember Luar for designing Lady Gaga's baby-blue Super Bowl dress, styled by Chloe and Chenelle Delgadillo. Luar, founded by Raul Lopez, has objectively been on a roll lately, and it's great to witness.) The colors were bold, the sequins were strong and shining, the skirt was full of movement, and the headpiece was extravagant. The look was a beautiful nod to the Latin showgirls of the 1930s to 1950s. It was also a literal demonstration of the power, strength, boldness, and joy of Latin American culture, which Karol platformed on a global stage.

Later on in her set, Karol changed into a custom miniskirt from the brand Nahmias and a bra top with colorful, ruffled sleeves made by Adan Terriquez. Notably, the sleeves boasted the colors of her Colombian flag. It was a pointed homage to her home country, and certainly felt at home among a sea of festivalgoers who had arrived at Karol's set waving their flags too. Just by looking at her and the crowd, you could quite literally see the diversity of the Latin American diaspora as well as a visual demonstration of how much incredible Latin culture is present across the U.S. today.

Finally, as Karol G's set explored a woman moving between nature's elements (from fire to water to earth to air), one of her last looks was a bra-and-bottom set adorned with large green leaves, as if she were Eve in the Garden of Eden. Upon first glance, it reminded me of Shakira's cover art for her 2005 album Oral Fixation, which features the singer posing as Eve eating the apple.

Of course, I remember this iconic album cover. My mom bought me the Oral Fixation CD when I was 9 years old, and we'd play it on repeat in her car. It's the album that features perhaps Shakira's greatest hit ever, "Hips Don't Lie," which cemented her as a global star, topping charts in over 50 countries.

Whether this fashion parallel was intentional or not, it was a beautiful reminder of the Latin American singers who came before Karol G and how—as Karol herself mentioned during her performance—waiting 27 years for the first Latina to headline Coachella is a bit too long. Though, it's a hopeful signal that there will be many, many more to come.

Overall, Karol's Coachella style wasn't just a prop or a means to an end. It was a powerful tool of expression used to amplify a moment and a performance and give representation to a population that deserves it. And her influence isn't going anywhere anytime soon. According to data from Spotify, following Karol G's first Coachella performance, her U.S. listeners spiked by around 36%—nearly twice the rate at which her global listeners grew. Don't be surprised if you keep seeing Karol-inspired fashion fads all around us. And now, you'll know where they came from!

I've attended enough festivals and scrolled through enough festival-related content to know when an experience feels extra special, and this year, Revolve Festival went above and beyond. One of the most sought-after invites in the festival world gets you into a VIP experience that showcases the best in music and fashion that will have you doing many, many double takes. I came for the Don Toliver performance but stayed to see some incredibly stylish people. Sure, there were the expected cowboy boots and breezy sets, but what really stood out were the oddly specific pieces that kept repeating in a way that felt like a storm of trends are brewing.

It was less "festival dressing" in the traditional sense and more of a curated aesthetic that just might be on its way to define summer style. It was like everyone got the same memo but interpreted it through their own lens. From niche accessories to very particular silhouettes, these are the trends I kept spotting and, honestly, couldn't stop thinking about afterward.

Modern Combat Boots

Forget the combat boots you wore to Warped Tour when you were younger, and try engineer-style boots. This version felt sleek, low profile, and refined and is Miu Miu approved. They had a big moment a few years ago and still make for the perfect finishing touch to a festival look. Comfort first.

Crochet Caps

Somewhere between ironic and chic, crochet caps were everywhere. Some find them costumey, and some call them the ultimate bohemian moment. It was kind of wild how, in less than a year, they were suddenly on every other head at the festival. They gave that "I just threw this on" energy while still feeling very styled, especially paired with otherwise minimalist outfits. It's the kind of accessory that makes a look feel considered and a little more niche.

Beaded Bralettes and Dresses

Delicate but attention-grabbing, beaded bralettes and dresses replaced more predictable festival looks. They caught the light in a way that felt almost jewelry-like, turning a simple outfit into something with dimension. Most were styled over sheer layers, or tops were worn solo with low-rise bottoms for a very intentional, barely-there effect. Teyana Taylor turned heads in her ensemble.

Leather Mini Shorts

This was one of the most noteworthy swaps in comparison to the festivals I attended just a few years ago—leather micro shorts instead of the usual denim cutoffs. Pair them with any top you own and your look is instantly elevated.

Capri Jorts

When jorts did enter the chat, they were longer and bolder than ever before. Calf length and baggy, this is a style that felt very much like festivalcore. They are a natural evolution of the oversize-denim trend—just a little more directional and a lot more specific.

Lace Trim

Tiny hits of lace trim showed up everywhere, from shorts to camis to skirts. It added a nice sense of delicacy that balanced out the heavier leather and boots. The overall effect felt a little vintage, a little romantic, and very intentional.

Crochet and Sheer Capes

Capes were the layering piece of the weekend, but not the dark and dramatic way you might imagine—more in a light, fairy-like sense. Crochet and sheer versions floated over outfits, adding movement and even more bohemian flair. It was less about coverage and more about creating a vibe.

After years of watching from afar, I finally made it to my first Coachella over the weekend, and yes, it was every bit as joy sparking as I'd imagined, blisters aside. Major highlights included belting out "Baby" during Justin Bieber's set and, of course, taking in the sea of fringe and sequins, because everyone knows Coachella style is truly in a league of its own. As a fashion writer, I couldn't help but clock all the emerging festival fashion trends.

Some buzzy looks felt par for the course—suede fringe boots and cheeky hot pants among them. Others, however, I didn't quite see coming. Exhibit A: bikini tops worn in lieu of shirts. Then again, what better way to beat the heat in style? Meanwhile, a wave of low-rise denim nodded to the early aughts, cementing the silhouette as a defining trend for 2026.

Skullcaps were out in full force over the weekend, with many festivalgoers topping off their looks with crochet and sequin-adorned styles. They may not have offered much protection from the intense sun, but the fitted hats certainly delivered on style, especially when paired with funky sunglasses and playful jewelry.

Much to the dismay of millennials, low-rise denim is here to stay—well, at least for festival season. However, you don't necessarily need to bare your whole stomach. As exhibited above, wearing high-waisted underwear underneath the bottoms adds both coverage and a stylish edge.

Fringe Boots

The biggest takeaway from the weekend? Comfortable shoes are nonnegotiable, as walking miles is unavoidable during the festival. While sneakers are the most practical option, flat boots emerged as the de facto choice—namely suede fringe styles. Clearly, Western-inspired fashion isn't going anywhere anytime soon.

Ponchos

Low-rise denim wasn't the only early aughts trend to rear its head. Ponchos were practically everywhere I turned. Sparkly styles led the charge, followed by crochet versions. My prediction: The trend will extend well beyond festivals this summer.

It seems bikini tops are no longer reserved for the beach. Over the weekend, a slew of attendees ditched shirts in favor of the swimwear, keeping sweat at bay. Don't be surprised if the trend makes its way to the streets.

Sabrina Carpenter's headlining Coachella performance set the internet ablaze, due to the set design (shout-out to the car fountain) and celebrity guest appearances (Sam Elliott, Susan Sarandon, Will Ferrell, and Samuel L. Jackson). It also included some major fashion and beauty moments, thanks to custom Dior and a not-to-be-missed manicure. The latter was a chrome, cherry-cola-esque set.

Celebrity nail artist Zola Ganzorigt used OPI products to create Carpenter's "vintage red" manicure. She used the professional-only Intelli-Gel line, but the good news is that you can secure the same shades in the brand's traditional nail lacquer. (I prefer the Infinite Shine collection, which is designed to give a smooth, shiny finish similar to gel without any of the fuss.) This manicure has "summer mood board" written all over it. History has shown that Coachella is when many summer trends begin to emerge, and when it comes to Coachella trendsetters, Kendall Jenner has long been at the top of the list. Coachella weekend one just wrapped, and of course, Jenner was in attendance, wearing the music-festival version of her chic, minimalist aesthetic. One of her outfits for the weekend included a comeback shorts trend that hasn't been considered trendy in a minute: white denim shorts.

Denim shorts, in general, have been put on the back burner in recent years as Bermuda shorts, pull-on shorts, and track shorts moved to the forefront. White denim shorts, in particular, aren't something that It girls such as Jenner have been spotted wearing all that often. Given that she wore her white tank and black mid-calf boots with rolled-up white denim shorts instead of the infinite number of other bottoms to choose from, I think it's worth noting and keeping in mind as you start your summer shopping.

Sure, pastels for spring might not be the most groundbreaking choice (to echo the iconic Miranda Priestly), but there's nothing like a light veil of color to get you jazzed for warmer weather. Well, unless you're Hailey Bieber.

The Rhode founder may be known for her pearly glazed tips, but she recently turned the tables with a pitch black polish base—an anti-spring mani if I ever saw one, but it's a look I'm already itching to copy. As you can see, Bieber doesn't do away with all of the spring elements. Ganzorigt added pretty blue and green flower accents, which gave the black base a little more of a springtime feel. She even mixed them with glow-in-the-dark powder so that they'd glimmer under the Coachella stage lights. It's somewhat of a festival staple for Bieber, who wrote on her Instagram Story, "the glow in the dark nail tradition continues."

The luminescence creates a nice contrast against the dark base, but still, I can't ignore the edgy choice of polish here. OPI's Black Onyx, which Ganzorigt used for Bieber's base, doesn't exactly scream spring. Even for a bold beauty occasion like Coachella, I'd expect the mogul to don something bright and punchy—especially with the pink and yellow vintage Dior mini slip she wore during the weekend.

Alas, Bieber is nothing if not a trend-setter, and so I fully expect jet black nails—with and without neon florals—to dominate the spring mani cycle. There's something so cool about ignoring the "rules" of a typical seasonal color story and opting for a deep plum, espresso, or black polish as the temperature heats up. It exudes sophisticated, NYC energy, and I'm officially convinced to contrast my spring outfits with a modern, inky lacquer. And whilst we've had some serious FOMO from the weekend, one thing the festival always delivers on is beauty inspo—especially so for hair trends. And Hailey Bieber’s new Coachella haircut makes a compelling case for long layers as a defining summer hair trend.

We're used to seeing Hailey with short bob haircuts or mid-length hairstyles, but it seems she's embraced the longer lengths this year with long, waterfall layers that tumble from the shoulder down to her ends. And I'm obsessed.

These face-framing layers are a great way to add movement or update longer hairstyles without going for a big chop. They're still long enough to be tied back into a ponytail or bun, and they look just as good straightened as they do styled à la Rachel Green, just how Hailey wore hers this past weekend. Kendall Jenner's early Coachella outfits followed the festival formula to a T. Crochet dresses? Gladiator sandals? Fringed suede bags? Check, check, and check. In 2014, she rolled up to the Empire Polo Club with Kylie Jenner in witchy all-black outfits that could have been mistaken for Halloween costumes. She made several outfit changes that year. On a different day, she was photographed at the festival wearing denim short shorts and cowboy boots alongside Selena Gomez, who opted for a sheer white crochet dress and boots. "This was the vibe at the time," Jenner later told Vogue about her 2010s Coachella style.

Now, her approach is much quieter and, frankly, more interesting. Instead of chasing whatever's peaking on Instagram, she's wearing outfits that feel true to her everyday style. 1. Prep and Paint the Nails

To most accurately re-create this look, you'll want to either ask for a gel manicure at the salon or pull out your UV gel lamp at home. But if regular polish is your go-to, fear not—you can still partake in this trend, just be prepared for your gems to fall off a bit faster than they would with gel.

Onto the paint job! Bachik recommends starting with a thin layer of base coat—and getting as close to the cuticle as possible—before moving onto your base polish. Jenner's light pink hue looks extra perfect for spring, and we've found a few lookalikes for both at-home gel manicurists and regular lacquer enthusiasts alike.

2. Sandwich Topcoat and Crystals

After allowing your pink nail polish to cure under a UV lamp (or dry, if using regular nail polish), you'll want to go in with topcoat—but only one nail at a time. Bachik explains that it's important to limit your focus to one nail in the topcoat and application steps, which should happen within seconds of each other, because "the crystals would slide with the topcoat" if you applied each gem to every nail before curing.

One by one, apply a gel (or regular!) topcoat, then quickly apply your gems in a flower-shaped cluster with a thin tweezer. Allow it to air-dry or cure before moving on to the next.

Pro tip: Secure your gems in place by going over the base with a thin brush dipped in topcoat so it won't peel away or fall off.

“This is not the year to go ‘clean girl’ at Coachella,” advises Davy, head makeup artist on Euphoria and co-founder of Half Magic Beauty. “I think we’ll see edgier looks this year, like shimmery smoky eyes and frosty lips.” That said, the celebrity MUA is the first to admit that glitter accents and face gems aren’t going anywhere. “You really can’t properly do festival season without these elements,” she says.

After crafting Chappell Roan’s iconic butterfly look at Coachella 2024, Davy knows a thing or two about making waves at the mother of all music festivals. The Emmy Award–winning makeup artist forecasts a slew of modern-day grunge looks and a few callbacks of old (frosted lips, anyone?) to litter the sand-trodden crowds. 2025 Coachella Makeup Trends

Indie Sleaze Sparkle

My ears perked up when I heard the words “shimmery smoky eyes,” with visions of Doechii’s slate-gray Grammys eyes and “unapproachable” makeup swimming in my head. Whether you’re opting for a smudgy-shimmery indie sleaze look with a wash of dark, glittering eye shadow (so 2010 of you) or opting for sparkly eyeliner, there’s no wrong way to achieve this eye—so long as it’s bold.

Davy suggests starting with a smoky eye—preferably with a sparkly cream eye shadow—picking her very own Half Magic Sparklestik in Noir or Never as her poison. She says a few swipes of these pigment-packed sticks are all you need for “the easiest smoky eye ever,” promising stay-put wear into the long hours of the night. But since we’re big eye shadow stick fans around here, we’d also recommend this sweat-proof, shimmery pick from Laura Mercier (especially in Nuit, an alluring, gritty gray-navy) due to its 24-hour staying power and smudge-proof formula.

The MUA highlights duochrome eye shadows as key players in an eye-catching festival look. Davy handpicked the shades Electric Butterfly (a very Euphoria violet) and Blushing Lizard (a shifting taupe blue) as her recommendations to wear under the concert lights, as they offer a galaxy of shifting colors that make a statement but feel wearable at the same time. “They adapt beautifully to different lighting, making them dynamic and eye-catching,” Davy muses. “You will get asked what eye shadow you’re wearing if you’re wearing these.”

But the finishing step for any festival makeup look is a healthy dose of light-reflecting glitter, so your eyes are just as amped up as the bass. “We call this product the ‘gateway to glitter,’” Davy says of the Glitterpuck Pressed Glitter, which you can apply anywhere that needs extra sparkle—eyes, lips, skin, you name it. Since they have a water-infused base, these pressed pigments impart high-impact shine with just one finger swipe. “You’ll get the most incredible, weightless veil of sparkle over your lids that will last all day, with zero fallout,” the artist proclaims. Dust this powder over a dark, matte eye shadow for a look that rivals the California night sky, or accentuate an already-shimmery look for a blinding sheen that you can only pull off at a music festival.

While eye makeup is one of the easiest ways to kick your makeup into festival mode, Davy encourages you to also play up your lips when you head to the desert. One of the trends the MUA is anticipating to see all over the grounds is in direct competition with the blazing heat: frosted lips, a hallmark of the ’60s, ’90s, and, well, now.

“I am personally obsessed with this effect, especially when paired with a defining lip liner,” Davy says of this icy trend. “It’s so classic 1960s, but [a] darker liner makes it modern.” We’re recent fans of the new Rhode Lip Shapes from Hailey Bieber, which are creamy, blendable lip liners that make for easy touchups in the desert, though really, any deep lip liner will do. After all, it’s simple prep for the star of the show—your ice-cold, frosted kissers.

Mac has long made the metallic lipsticks loved by 90s makeup mavens, but there are a plethora of other icy lip products taking over the trendy beauty scene today. Davy recommends Half Magic’s new Crystal Butter Lip Balm, a squalane- and shea butter-boosted hydrator with a galaxy of shimmery flecks, which will not only leave your lips with a layer of snowflake shine but provide up to 12 hours of hydration in the desert heat.

While we love a hydrating balm, we’re also eyeing a handful of eye-catching icy options including Pat McGrath’s Lust Lip Glosses (named one of the best Pat McGrath products by one editor), MAC’s iconic Lipstick Shine, and e.l.f.’s high-shine Glow Reviver Lip Oils. However you glow, just make sure it’s frosty this festival season.

Pro Tip: For late-night headliner sets, combine Half Magic’s Sculptitude Lip Liner with the Magic Drip Glitter Lip Gloss. “This combo at nighttime is so hot,” says Davy. “Nothing sparkles like a glitter product in low lighting, and nothing frames a glitter gloss like a longwear lipliner.”

Let’s get one thing straight: The first thing that goes into your beauty bag must be sunscreen when you’re packing for a weekend spent in the sun, and Davy would have to agree. But if she were to pack your bag for you, these are a few of the necessities she’d reach for and the tips she’d employ to keep your face looking flawless.

“My biggest tip for the heat is to use oil-free skin prep and SPF,” she starts. Davy recommends steering clear of heavy foundations and opting for something lightweight that provides your desired level of coverage to stay comfortable in the sun. “You don’t want to be piling on a lot of complexion makeup if you’ll be sweating,” she explains. “I’d stick to a tinted sunscreen (love those!) and then concealer under the eyes and in any reddish areas where you want a little coverage.”

The MUA suggests perusing her brand’s extensive collection of self-adhesive gems, studs, pearls, and more “that will hold up in the desert heat” to give any makeup look that instant It-factor.

“Don’t be afraid to cover a lot of real estate on your eyes—festival time is the time to go off,” Davy emphasizes. “Think: magical, fantastical version of yourself.” Not sure where to start? The MUA has a few tips to get the creative juices flowing.

“Use big, medium and tiny rhinestones to create tapered winged liners, arches above your crease, eyebrow gems (above, below or on your brows), or even use stick-on gems to create fake piercings,” she instructs. “I even put these on Chappell Roan last year for her set. No glue needed.”

How to Do Coachella Makeup

• Protect the Base: Start with an oil-free moisturizer, follow with tinted sunscreen, and touch up where necessary with concealer using a light hand. “You can also mix a little concealer in with your SPF and make your own tinted SPF,” Davy suggests.
• Prime the Eyes: “If you’re doing an eyeshadow look, I’d recommend using an eye shadow primer first or a longwear matte liquid eyeshadow like Half Magic’s Chromaddiction Matte Eye Paint if you’re going for a bolder, color look,” she says. “If you want sparkle, [the] Glitterpill Eye Paint is an awesome topper that gives the ultimate glittery sparkle that especially comes alive at night.”
• Use the Right Mascara: Though waterproof mascaras are never a bad idea, they’re sometimes hard to remove. In this case, Davy recommends packing a good tubing mascara. “So many people are making the switch to tubing formulas because they don’t reliquify, so you never get raccoon eyes,” she explains.
• Prolong the Makeup: “I’d also recommend carrying a handheld fan and wearing sunglasses so you’re not squinting too much (keeps that eye makeup in check so it still looks fresh when the sun goes down),” Davy concludes.

Like most Gen Zers and millennials growing up on Beyoncé's internet in the mid-2010s, I had a slight obsession with grungy, celebrity-filled music festivals. You can probably attribute it to my hours logged on Tumblr—the user-first platform that splashed photos of starlets in gladiator sandals, bohemian crotchet tank tops, and metallic temporary tattoos casually galavanting around beaten grass fields when on their way to watch the Arctic Monkeys and The 1975. Whether it was Coachella, Glastonbury, or Lollapalooza, if there was a way to be there (even if it was via photos of Alexa Chung wearing her mud-soaked Wellington boots), I'd be there.

As I grew up and left the platform behind, my interest in the internet's fascination with the chic, lived-in way of musical festival fashion never waned. Every weekend in mid-April, I'd get up, log into Instagram, and scroll through photos of celebrities, influencers, and everyday people pulling out all stops to sweat and dance around in 90-degree heat like it was their job. I was lucky enough to go last year with a group of my friends and live out my tweenage fantasy.

In some ways, music festival fashion is connected to the nostalgic part of my brain. There's an inherent desire when I pack to look as cool as possible and accumulate pieces that my 13-year-old self (and now my 25-year-old self) sees as unabashedly fun. Although I've swapped out my flower crowns for cooler, more versatile pieces that fit my personality, I'm still shopping at Forever 21 for my Coachella outfits and beyond. The American retailer and music festivals are intrinsically linked in my mind—I even had a Coachella-themed birthday party during college and bought my denim fringe jacket from my local store.

Another Coachella has come and gone, and as a first-time attendee, I have to admit, I had no idea what to expect. What was once an item on the bucket list I kept as an angsty 13 year old on Tumblr has now been crossed off more than 10 years later. As someone who grew up watching Vanessa Hudgens and Alessandra Ambrosio frolic along the Polo fields in Indio, California, to attend the country's largest music festival, I thought I knew what to expect from attendees: cowboy boots, cowboy hats, cowboy vests… you get the idea. Coachella, as a concept, has been torn apart and put back together by shiny TikTok algorithms. In a digital-first world, it's the fashion community's first stomping ground to set trends for the upcoming summer. This year was no different. 

Based on data from Trendalytics, there are already a few hero items the fashion crowd is starting to try and buy post-Coachella. Things like cowboy boots, sheer tops, cargo pants, and leather dresses all surged in searches week-by-week compared to last year, setting the tone for aesthetics and trends we're set to see as we head into May, June, and July. Numbers aside, the sheer number of celebrities and influencers sneakily dressed in the same items has proved our point: When it comes to Coachella, anyone who's anyone is already wearing these things.

What's Coachella without a bit of Hudgens-inspired imagery? Since the early aughts, the music festival has hosted many bohemian-inspired fashions, from colorful gladiator sandals and dip-dyed jean cut-offs to intricate flower crowns sprinkled with glitter and notes of Lana Del Rey. While Hudgens didn't attend Coachella this year (and lamented about it on Instagram), her spirit was still felt in the sheer crochet dresses, oversize jewelry, and floppy hats attendees wore.

While we can't chalk it all up to Coachella queens of years past, younger attendees have been leaning into the laid-back '70s-inspired aesthetic for their summer fashion needs. Instead of hyper-trendy crop tops and neon accessories, today's fashion crowd opts for raffia bags, vintage-looking jewelry, and flowy maxi dresses.

The most surprising thing about this year's Coachella? How normal it felt at times. While I know feather miniskirts and over-the-top glitter makeup isn't on everyone's agenda, I was shocked to see how toned-down some celebrities and influencers were, opting for stealth-wealth-inspired outfits like white tank tops, trousers, and denim jackets instead of the usual roster of sequin miniskirts and pink felt cowboy hats. 

In an era where subdued looks are on the rise, if-you-know-you-know fashion has grown more popular. Low-key summer 'fits are sure to reign supreme in the coming months. If Camilla Morrone, everyone's favorite rising It girl, is any indication, this summer will be chill as far as the trend circuit goes.

Zendaya can do no wrong in my eyes. Whether it's her surprise appearance with Labyrinth during weekend two or the Dune-ification of festival fashion, I know we owe it all to her. This year, Coachella fashion veered more toward the technical side, with attendees opting for leather jackets, motorcycle boots, slinky bikinis, and baggy cargo pants instead of sparkly minidresses. Playing into fashion's rising cool-girl image, this year's Coachella proved that sometimes, the best way to look on-trend is to look like you're straight out of a Sci-Fi movie.

Cargo pants and bikinis-as-tops aren't new to the summer fashion lexicon by any means. My prediction? Technical wear will still reign supreme for the second summer in a row, with aesthetics like gorpcore and brands like Salomon and Carhartt taking a front seat into the Dune-ification of festival fashion. Expect to see earth tones like greys, browns, greens, and blacks dominate.

I didn't attend Coachella, but I'm guessing the crowd lost it when Zendaya stepped on stage during Labrinth's set. In recent years, Zendaya has stepped away from music to focus on acting projects, so it's safe to say no one expected to see her with a microphone in hand during the second weekend of the arts and music festival. And in true Zendaya fashion, she looked perfect.

For the appearance, Zendaya wore a pretty dress trend from the early '00s that is experiencing something of a comeback: the ruffled minidress. The pink dress featured a fitted bodice and a bow at the chest. She made it look even more fashion-forward by layering a white tank underneath it. (FYI, Miu Miu can be credited with making T-shirt layering a thing this season.) As a mental preparation for the summer music festival scene (and my return to the desert next week, I've lived vicariously through everyone's Coachella 2023 outfits this year. Naturally, from TikTok, Instagram, and Twitter, it looks like celebrities and influencers alike are taking things ten times more chill this year— reminding us all of the good 'ole days where Instagram barely existed and green juice wasn't $17 on the festival grounds. While there were the usual suspects for accessories and clothing items that seem to be Coachella staples year after year, the best festival fashion at Coachella 2023 gives rise to low-rise maxi skirts, simple t-shirts, and bohemian-inspired accessories. If I didn't know any better, I'd think it was 2013. Pass me my flower crown!

I've always said I'd go to festivals simply for the outfit opportunities. There's something so fun about festival fashion—it's an excuse to dress as wild as you'd like. Festivals are one of the few places you can wear a sequin bra and cowboy hat without anyone looking at you twice. They're a chance to get out of your comfort zone and wear something you wouldn't normally wear in your everyday life.

When it comes to festival fashion, there are so many different routes you can go. There's Westerncore, which is always a favorite for those attending the country festival Stagecoach. There's also the futuristic look favored by those seeing Kygo at Project Glow. And of course, there are always a select few who stay true to the bohemian roots that became synonymous with Coachella.

With festival season in full swing, I figured I'd do a little shopping for items that would be easy to style and guaranteed crowd-pleasers. After scrolling through a variety of retailers, I found so many great things that I now completely regret not getting a ticket for Coachella this year. Even though I'm missing out, I can still share all the chic festival-ready pieces so you're prepared if you are going.

There are a few things that always loom over Indio, California, while everyone is partying in the desert in April: the scorching sun, for one, and the ubiquitous, unmistakable, inescapable presence of Revolve and its megawatt star-studded crowd of models, influencers, and celebrities. The retailer has worked tirelessly for years to maintain its cool-girl image year-round, but for one weekend in April, it shines 10 times brighter than usual (and not just because its shiny, sequin-covered minidresses and metallic cowboy boots are on display).

Festivals—including Coachella, Revolve Fest, Lollapalooza, Bonnaroo, and the like—have become synonymous with Revolve's ever-growing amount of trend-forward clothing and in-house brands. And it's not by accident. Revolve's attire is expertly curated, providing its customers with a fashion-forward experience that practically guarantees them internet virality. "The Revolve customer is always looking for a statement piece that draws attention, whether it's a dress, an earring, a shoe, etc," Revolve's chief merchandising officer, Lauren Yerkes, tells Who What Wear. In a world where social media engagement is currency, having something that will set you apart from the crowd is essential. "We know they are coming to us looking for the latest trends and emerging designers that she can tag on Instagram and share with her friends," she adds.

Enter Revolve's 2024 Festival Shop, which coincides with Coachella, taking place on April 15 and April 16. If you're not attending a festival this summer, no worries. The styles are versatile enough to wear to summer parties, picnic dates, and tropical vacations. Its specialized style edits revolve around colorful knitwear, '90s minimalism, and double denim, which are all 2024 trends that will live far beyond this summer's festival circuit.

"We have seen trends change over the years, but crochet, mesh, and any sheer elements seem to remain consistent," she explains. Festival dressing is something I've quietly perfected over the years, and my biggest lesson is quite simple. The perfect festival look is less about following trends and more about knowing exactly what works for you season after season. After two back-to-back Coachellas and plenty of trial runs on other festival grounds, I've learned that the best outfits strike a very specific balance: They feel effortless, photograph well, and actually hold up from the first set of the night to the last.

This year, I treated Coachella as a real-time edit. With it being the first big festival of the year, this was the opportunity to see which looks worked and didn't. I tested out the pieces I had a good feeling about to confirm what's worth repeating but also took rigorous notes on what everyone else was wearing. Some trends delivered exactly as expected, while others felt a little too obvious or overdue for a break. Below, see everything I'd wear again in a heartbeat and what I'm officially leaving behind for summer festival season.

My favorite time of year to scroll social media has officially arrived. Yep, it's festival season. Whether you’re heading out to the Palm Springs deserts or just enjoying the show from home, we need to talk about the fashion moments that are just weeks away from breaking the internet. First, my all-time favorite celebrity, Bad Bunny, is headlining, and I’m expecting attendees to do the most fashionable man in the world justice with their looks. They better push the limits.

Like it or not, Coachella has returned in all its glory, and we're going to need to talk about the fashion. After a two-year hiatus, many of the celebrity Coachella regulars have returned, with some fun new faces as well, and it's almost like nothing has changed—but a few key trends have.

At this point, I think we could all make a list of stereotypical Coachella trends with our eyes closed, and at the top of that list would be cutoff denim shorts. They've been a Coachella mainstay since its inception, but this year, after sifting through the celebrity photos from weekend one, I noticed that denim shorts were fewer and farther between than in years past. It takes a certain type of woman to keep the whole world afloat—and Janelle Monáe is that type. Women around the world felt seen the moment she stepped onto the world’s main stage. She’s not only a black woman but an openly queer advocate with one hell of a wardrobe. And her badassery doesn’t stop there; we could spend days talking about her career. From starring in some of Hollywood's most daring movies such as Moonlight and Hidden Figures to creating some true billboard bops, this is a woman of many hats, quite literally. This is why, in an effort to save time, we decided to focus on one part of what makes Monáe iconic: her style. 

Her looks over the years have always been the perfect mix of camp and androgyny done right. You don’t have to take my word for it. Ahead, you’ll find some of Janelle Monáe’s best looks, starting from the past to the present. You won’t be disappointed.

It wouldn’t be an outfit roundup without a little throwback, and Monáe’s look for the Ralph Lauren Fashion's Night Out party back in 2010 is quite the flashback. Since emerging onto the scene, this woman has been the purveyor of a good suit paired with a statement hat. Is it just me, or is André Leon Talley is giving all the auntie vibes? 

I might have screamed when I found this image of Beyoncé and Monáe at the 53rd annual Grammy Awards back in 2011 in matching sequin jackets. Seeing these ladies in formation is a feminist’s dream come true. 

While Monáe is typically a bit more camp-inspired when it comes to her looks, I found her 2012 Met Gala look for the theme Schiaparelli and Prada: Impossible Conversations to be quite refreshing. It was a simpler time when platform heels were as socially acceptable as showing up to the Met Gala in a black jumpsuit. 

Let me set the scene: You’re in your car, and you turn on the radio, which playing is a song called "We Are Young.” You, my friend, are in 2013, and Janelle Monáe has been nominated for a Grammy for this record. But she’s not a regular artist; she’s the type of artist who shows up in a sleek tuxedo. Oh, we were so young indeed. 

It is not possible to fully describe all that encompasses Black Girl Magic, but if you tried, it would be the moment Monáe and Erykah Badu took the award for the record "Q.u.e.e.n." at the 2013 Billboard Music Awards. This Prince-inspired look on Monáe is magic in and of itself. 

Something must have been in the air in 2014 because in addition to Beyoncé's and Rihanna's iconic Met Gala looks, Monáe rolled up in this Tadashi Shoji's cape and Kwiat diamonds. PSA: Heroes do indeed wear capes. 

Monáe’s most iconic style moments are not solely reserved for the red carpet. In fact, her street style is, dare I say, even better. Don’t believe me? Consider the look above, Frankly, wearing head-to-toe Chanel to Chanel’s S/S 16 show is all the proof you need.  

Did you just gasp? You should have because Monáe is one of the only people who can truly pull off a head-to-toe black sequin look from Christian Sirano, as seen at the Gotham Independent Film Awards. At this point, no one should even try, because Monáe will always wear it better.

If Monáe’s crown was up for debate, the murmurs of a coup were shut all the way down the moment she showed up to the Met Gala in 2017 in this fairytale-like Ralph & Russo dress. This is the type of look that would have Marie Antoinette in her feelings. 

Yes, another pantsuit, but honestly, can you blame me? This Prabal Gurung suit that she wore with Stuart Weitzman shoes to the Hidden Figures screening in 2016 was out of this world. NASA, please make the next space suits this chic. 

Please bury me in the Jenny Packham cage gown Monáe wore to the 28th annual Palm Springs International Film Festival Film Awards Gala—kidding. But not really, because yet again Monáe proves that a black-and-white color palette is anything but boring.

Monáe needs to pay for my hospital bill because my heart stopped when she stepped onto the in this fresh-off-the-runway Elie Saab couture dress. While it deviates slightly from her signature black-and-white color pallette, gold on this queen is very fitting. 

Oh, so you thought Janelle was done serving Oscar looks in 2017? Nah, fam. In fact, she showed up to the Vanity Fair after-party in this black Alexandre Vauthier couture gown. And while the couturier has dressed everyone from Lizzo to Beyoncé, this look deserves its own hall of fame.

Unpopular opinion ahead: Heavenly Bodies: Fashion and the Catholic Imagination was the best damn Met Gala theme yet. Not only were we served the iconic images of Rihanna as the pope, Zendaya as Joan of Arc, Solange in a do-rag (should I go on?), but also added to this holiness was Monáe in a stunning Marc Jacobs dress and custom hat. Hello, thank you for answering all my style prayers.

When the history books catalog the most iconic style moments for the LGBTIQA+ community, you best believe that Monáe in a tiered Nicolas Jebran rainbow gown will be in it. Honestly, there is no better way to deviate from your signature color, not to mention celebrate Pride Month, than showing up to the 2018 BET Awards dripping in all the colors of the rainbow. 

Very few women can pull off tulle, but Monáe doesn't struggle when it comes to wearing this voluminous fabric. In fact, being the vision that she is, she casually rolled up to receive her award for the visionary category of the Glamour’s 2018 Woman of the Year Awards in a Jean Paul Gaultier tulle dress. And while her dress alone deserved an award, her acceptance speech cemented my love for her.

You could say that 2018 belonged to Monáe. She released one of the hottest albums of the year and racked up award nominations for Dirty Computer. She was feeling herself so much, in fact, that she wore these chaps at the Billboard Women in Music Gala. And while chaps are quite the controversial choice, you have to admit this woman deserves an award for the sheer fact she pulled them off with such ease. 

While 2018 was a great year for Monáe, it is possible that 2019 was even better. After all, she started the year off strong by showing up to the Grammys in this look. Jean Paul Gaultier and Janelle Monáe do it again. 

While most people look to street stars during Fashion Week for inspiration, I look to Janelle Monáe. I found myself feeling the need to copy this head-to-toe Thom Browne look, in particular, which she wore to the F/W 20 shows. BRB, going to go put my hair into two buns. 

If one stunning Paris Fashion Week look wasn’t enough, how about two in a single day? After Monáe blessed us with her Thom Browne outfit, she was spotted on the way to Valentino’s F/W 20 show in a head-to-toe red monochrome look. She could literally step on me in those red patent-leather Mary Jane shoes any day, and I wouldn’t even be mad.

Monáe showed up to Chanel’s Paris Fashion Week show like the goddess she is. At this point, we should just dedicate a whole story to her in head-to-toe Chanel looks. 

If you’ve scrolled this far, then that means you understand that Monáe is the steward of avant-garde style—which is why she did not play with her 2019 Met Gala look. The star showed up in this high-camp Christian Siriano dress and hats, on hats, on hats. We can never unsee this look. 

Monáe performed on the Coachella main stage for the first time in 2019. And while performing alongside Childish Gambino and Lizzo was legendary in and of itself, it wouldn’t be a true spectacle without some serious looks. In line with her iconic look from the music video "Pynk,” she wore her vagina-inspired pants, and honestly, Coachella hasn’t seen such a look since.

While my fellow editors were in a tizzy over Ralph Lauren’s New York Fashion Week presentation this past S/S 20, I was deceased from Monáe’s performance at the show. If hearing her belt out the jams weren’t enough, she casually rolled up in this Ralph Lauren blue sequin number. In my humble opinion, this woman wins fashion week every time. 

It should be noted that the same amount of time dedicated to Monáe’s style should also be allocated to her hair. Yes, sure, the Alexandre Vauthier couture minidress that she wore to the annual Harper's Bazaar Icons Party is fabulous. But it’s not as jaw-dropping as the bedazzled barrettes interwoven through her braids. We’ll keep that in mind for a future story, but for now, let me just add this to my list of hairstyles to try. 

And finally, her most recent best look: the stunning Honayda gown she wore to the premiere of the film Harriet. Like all of Monáe’s looks and work, she never ceases to dazzle. More than that, whether it be honoring the heroic Harriet Thuman in her most recent film or sharing her story as a queer woman on the red carpet, in her songs, and everywhere she goes, Monáe shows that caring is always in style.

Every April, music lovers make their pilgrimage over to Indio, California, to visit one of the world’s largest and most talked-about music festivals: Coachella. I attended Coachella's weekend one event and wanted to share some tips that are not only useful if you're planning to come down for weekend two, but, as Coachella stays pretty standard year to year, can be helpful in the years to come. If you’re planning to make the trek for the first time this year, you’ll want to consider how you get there, where you’ll stay, and how to maneuver the festival once you’re at the venue. Prepping for Coachella doesn't stop at checking off the larger to-dos on your list—some of the simplest tips can help you enjoy the experience to the fullest. Up ahead, we’ll walk through what to expect from Coachella, including what to bring, what to leave at home, and how to get around.

Getting There

If you’re in the California area, the best way to get to Coachella is by car. I took a 2019 Chevy Blazer on my way to Coachella from Los Angeles, so my travel buddy and I would have plenty of room in the back to bring our (overpacked) bags, snacks, and a case of water. (You can’t bring water through the Coachella ticket gates, but I’d suggest keeping a pack in your room for staying hydrated before and after the festival.) The long-ish drive from L.A. was made so much more pleasant by taking a drive in this sporty SUV—it felt like a luxury ride and provided a totally seamless drive through the desert.

On our way over, we used the Chevy Blazer’s Apple Carplay to connect with directions and music that displayed directly on the car’s touchscreen dash, instead of having to fiddle around with a phone while on the road. We left Los Angeles around 9 p.m. on Thursday night to miss traffic on the way to Palm Desert, which took a little less than two and a half hours.

If you’re thinking of flying, Palm Springs has a small airport for mostly domestic flights that tend to be a little pricier than LAX options. On the airport's site, you can see a list of airlines and destinations that it serves. LAX is pretty much the standard for finding your way over to Palm Desert, particularly if you’re visiting internationally. Valley Music Travel offers an LAX airport shuttle pass for $75 that runs from the airport to a list of popular hotels in Palm Desert. It also offers an Any Line shuttle pass that will get you to and from a list of hotels to Coachella grounds for $80, which covers all three days and can save you on calling for rides. Additionally, there are shuttle passes to further cities, like San Francisco, San Diego, and San Jose, available on Bus.com for one-way tickets priced at $75.

Accommodations

Accommodations at Coachella fall into two categories: camping onsite at the festival grounds or finding accommodations off-site.

Camping will save you from both pricey hotel options and the price of traveling to and from the festival on surge-priced ride-shares. There are a few different camping options. The most popular is car camping, which costs $125. This year Coachella is also offering "preferred” car camping that will situate you closer to the venue entrance for $325. Showers and restrooms, Wi-Fi, food and drink vendors, and refillable water stations are available onsite. Tent camping is also an option for $125. For something between camping and a hotel, Coachella offers Lake Eldorado, lakeside tent camping that has more spacious accommodations. Price points for Lake Eldorado vary depending on how many are in your group and what kind of tickets you opt for.

Most hotel options are available closer to the Palm Springs area. We stayed at the JW Marriott Desert Springs Resort and Spa located in Palm Desert, a four-star hotel situated about 20 minutes from the festival grounds. For a trendy option, Ace Hotel Palm Springs is a popular boutique hotel with beautiful grounds.

On the Grounds

Fair warning: Getting to the festival grounds from the drop-off locations is still a trek. There are motorized bikes offering rides to and from lots for $10 a person—the prices are steep but worth it on the way back after a day of standing. Bikers don’t accept cards, so have a little cash on you.

Once you’re at the festival, there are two main paths to follow, and for 2019’s festival, these were color-coded as yellow and green. The yellow path leads to and from the VIP area that also passes through Uber’s pickup lot. The green path leads to general admission and also stops through Lot 13, the friends and family pickup and drop-off point, which will give you access to Lyft. Day parking is also offered for free on the grounds, just be sure to move your car by 2 a.m. or risk getting towed.

There are a couple general stores on-site that provide the basics (medicine, toiletries) if you forget any necessities. Wi-Fi is available at the venue in select spots, along with charging stations—just be sure to bring your own cable.

Food and Drink

Unsurprisingly, food is heavily marked up at Coachella—think amusement park prices. A variety of foods like burgers, pizza, and poke bowls are available on grounds. Vegetarian options are plentiful, and while vegan and gluten-free options do exist, take a glance at the stand's menu before waiting in line. Multiple bars are also located on grounds, along with ID checkpoints you’ll have to stop at every day to grab a new wristband. Beer, wine, and cocktails start at a minimum of $12, and bottled water is being sold at most stands for $2. VIP food and drinks are located to the left of the main stage and supply pretty much the same range of food offered in the GA area. You’ll need to swipe your wristband to get into the VIP area, which also provides additional standing room to see the main stage.

Packing and Dressing

Style advice aside, there are a few points of practicality you may want to consider when outfit planning. Flat shoes, especially ones that are closed toe, are highly recommended, again especially when exiting the grounds. Opt for materials that are easy to clean, like leather, as the festival grounds will leave your shoes coated in dust. Bring a pack of bandages with you just in case (especially if you’re wearing new shoes), as there will be a ton of standing and walking. Temperatures drop at night, so bring a jacket or sweater for the evenings. The grounds offer locker reservations for the weekend at $55 to store your belongings, and as steep as that sounds, it’s worth a reservation if you’re planning to be on the grounds all day.

Last weekend, I committed one of the biggest beauty sins imaginable—I wore my makeup for 24 hours straight. And while the situation definitely wasn't ideal, it did make for quite the beauty experiment, serving as the ultimate sweat-, sun-, and dance-rife test for all my favorite products. On a daily basis (especially during the spring and summer), I use a handful of beauty formulas with boastful claims of 16- or 24-hour wear, sun protection, enduring hydration, and the like, but I've never had the opportunity to put all these current favorites to the test. Until last weekend's Coachella festivities, that is. 

I'm actually pretty used to wearing my makeup and other beauty products longer than most. I'm an early bird, but I also stay up late, so it's honestly not uncommon for me to slap my makeup on around 6:30 a.m. or 7 a.m. and keep it on until 9 p.m. or 10 p.m. after I've completed a jam-packed day of work, events, the gym, dinner, and everything in between. However, last Saturday was a bit more extreme. I woke up early at my Palm Springs hotel to get some work done and prepare for the day's desert adventures (parties, the festival, followed by more parties) and didn't return to my room (where I proceeded to wipe all my makeup off) until almost 6 a.m. the following morning. Scary, I know. What's interesting, however, is that my makeup pretty much looked exactly as it had when I left the hotel roughly 24 hours before. Plus, I was still receiving compliments from the crew on the bus en route home. To be honest, I was pretty astounded.
