Before you come for me, yes, you can wear trench coats in literally hundreds of ways, but if you want it to look 2025 coded, there's really just one that fits the bill—and Chloë Sevigny just wore it. While attending the 19th Annual Golden Heart Awards benefitting God's Love We Deliver on Monday night, the New York City It girl and actress was photographed wearing a dark olive, knee-length trench coat from Saint Laurent with, well, nothing. Let me explain. Instead of donning her trench with jeans, trousers, or a skirt, Sevigny wore the outerwear staple as a dress, skipping all other clothing items and only styling it with sheer tights, Saint Laurent slingbacks, and a gold, satin clutch. "It's a 34mm, which in the '70s or before that, would be a normal size for a man to wear," Brynn Wallner, journalist and founder of Dimepiece, a platform dedicated to women and watches, tells Who What Wear about Sevigny's watch. Today, Wallner says, the scale for men has increased, while women are more often than not choosing smaller watch styles. "It has a very 'borrowed from the boys' look to it," she continues. "I feel like she got it from her Connecticut dad, who had it sitting in a drawer for years … and she took it one day." The loose way she wears it, with an extra link or two than what's probably necessary for her wrist size, adds to this narrative. In reality, according to a Vogue interview from 2015, Sevigny's watch was a gift she bought herself after Big Love wrapped, the HBO series she starred in that ran from 2006 until 2011. It's been spotted on her wrist for years, at the Venice Film Festival in 2017 and movie premieres in Los Angeles.

Arguably, no one can convince me to buy into a trend more than Monsters actress Chloë Sevigny, who has been doling out outfit inspiration since the mid-1990s when she made her film debut at 19 in Kids. In 1995, when the movie came out, she walked in Miuccia Prada's S/S 96 runway show for Miu Miu. (She's actually walked in a couple of shows for Miu Miu and other brands.) Chloë Sevigny has been our style queen since pretty much forever. So when she makes an appearance, we tend to take notes. Before there were the legions of colorful Scandi Pinterest girls and old money aunties, the fashion set only relied on a handful of people designated as trendsetters and culture definers. These women, by and large stemming from early aughts hipster scenes throughout Los Angeles, Paris, and New York, were designated as It girls. And there was no one cooler than Chloë Sevigny. 

In 1994, the New Yorker published a zany inside look at the cool-girl paradise of the time (read: the East Village party scene), crowned by then 19-year-old Sevigny. Her style, like most people, was at the heart of the zeitgeist following the post-'80s counter-culture movement. "Smells Like Teen Spirit" by Nirvana had come out a few years prior. Delia's catalogs, filled with butterfly clips and platform boots, were being sent out to tween homes across America. Donald Trump was still a random businessman with political ambitions. All was (seemingly) well.

Sevigny's classic style moments all border on the eclectic: soccer jerseys paired with high heels, Western cowboy boots with baby-doll dresses at red carpet premieres. Socks, sandals, and Miu Miu sets are all included. They're all held together by her nonchalant, laid-back attitude. Every time she wears a sheer jumpsuit or unironic pair of biker shorts, it doesn't feel like she's trying too hard to feel cool. It just feels like her.

As a child who was way too young to have unrestricted access to the internet, I didn't exactly know why Sevigny was famous when I constantly reblogged her on my Tumblr dashboard. All I knew was that she was cool, young, and exactly the woman I aspired to be in a "Lana Del Ray vinyl" way—opulent fur coats, glossy ballet slippers, close access to high-street designers, and cool men chain-smoking cigarettes in rock bands. Granted, I was literally 13, but somewhere deep down, I knew that New York's favorite actress turned socialite turned fashion darling would continue to manifest herself in every aspect of my life.

At 48, the Chloë Sevigny of it all still hasn't gone away. A decade later, the fascination hasn't seemed to have stopped by any means. Unlike other starlets from the '90s and early 2000s who have since faded into oblivion, there's something different about Sevigny's long-lasting cultural impact. There are still style roundups, magazine covers, and viral Instagram-fueled closet sales making headlines. Only this time, the teens idolizing her are Gen Z, not millennials.

In some way, Sevigny's impact doesn't surprise me. We're living in an age of digital stylistic overload. With every new season comes a new aesthetic to be -coreified, publicized, and memeified into seeming oblivion. It makes total sense that we'd hang on to objectively good personal style in any sense of the word.

Living in New York City has definitely changed my perspective on footwear. While my go-to kitten heels and riding boots may be perfect for a late-night soirée or a Sunday brunch, most of the time, my step count is in the thousands, meaning my footwear is of utmost importance.

While most quilted, lambskin versions of the chunky shoes can cost upwards of $2000 on the resale end, my trusted pair of Tevas begin only at $55, and platform and hiking versions cost only $20 more—a mere fraction of the highly lauded designer versions. Plus, you won't feel bad about any scuffs or lived-in marks you'll get from hiking a mountain top (or accidentally dragging your feet across a subway grate on your way to your local NYC smoothie shop). 

To be honest, it's probably better that the general population doesn't catch on quite yet to the best sandals I'll ever own in my lifetime. Some people are born with an innate sense of style. Take perennial cool girl Chloë Sevigny, for example. The New Yorker can throw on just about anything and look incredible. I have to admit I am no stranger to baggy jeans having worn a variety of iterations since the mid-'90s—JNCO jeans, anyone? Having been so used to baggier styles, I will never forget the strong hesitation I had when skinny jeans began to reign supreme. Michael Apa, DDS, is an aesthetic dentist known for his innovative method of natural-looking veneers that are custom shaped and fit to a person's features. He is a favorite among celebrities such as the Olsen twins, Chloë Sevigny, Uma Thurman, Lucy Hale, and many more.

In the latest episode of our podcast, Who What Wear With Hillary Kerr, Apa talks about his journey to becoming a cosmetic dentist, the impact that teeth have on anti-aging, dental must-haves to use at home, and his ultimate goal to shake up the dental industry. I personally—even though I've worked in the beauty and fashion world for two decades—have not specifically connected youth or anti-aging along with teeth in that same way. How do those two relate in your opinion?

So your teeth are the support for the lower third of your face. I always use the example of a denture. If you see someone that has a denture take it out, their entire lower third of their face collapses, and they put it back in, and their lips are fuller, their jaws are fuller, their jawline is structured, and there's real vertical height in the lower third of their face. It supports the rest of their face, their skin. What's happening over time is we're getting to a denture. So our teeth are collapsing, and they're getting shorter and grinding down. And they're discoloring and chipping and staining and the obvious things, but their skeletal structure from the beginning will dictate what they're going to look like. When they go to a dermatologist or plastic surgeon, they're looking at facial collapse, but they're not understanding that it's their skeletal structure and their teeth. And so the dermatologist is going to say, "Oh, well, your lips are longer and thinner, so let's inject them, which is going to make it fuller and down more." Or they're going to do a lip lift. But it's not going to change the overall structure of the lower third of their face, which is really what they need. So if you understand facial aging, teeth have everything to do with how old you look and how fast. Now, obviously, it has nothing to do with skin and things like that, but it has everything to do with the support of your face.

Are there any at-home treatments or favorite products that you really like? Also, apparently, everyone needs an electric toothbrush, but I didn't know that. So what else does everyone need? And why do they need an electric toothbrush?

I think that a lot of people would benefit from a night guard to sleep with. Not the sexiest thing in the world, but what a night guard is doing is it is stopping your teeth from shifting, and it's stopping that vertical collapse that's happening to your teeth over time, like getting to that "I just took my denture out" look. It will substantially hold things into place. Even when I do someone's teeth, we make every single patient a night guard because it maintains the integrity of what I just did. So think of it in the opposite direction if you just wore it from your 20s when you do most of your grinding and your stress from all the things that happen in your 20s, all the destruction you would have avoided to your teeth. So a night guard is a thing that a lot of dentists don't talk about, which is super important.

Electric toothbrush. So number one: Electric toothbrush is on a timer, right? So you don't have to wonder like, Did I brush my teeth for two minutes? But you really do need two minutes to brush your teeth properly. Most manual brushes are scrubbers, which isn't fantastic for your gums. And that doesn't really get into all spots, you know? Then you have to think of the manual dexterity of people. Can everyone really use a manual toothbrush the way that they can an electric toothbrush? I would say 85% of the world does not know how to properly brush their teeth with a manual toothbrush.

You have a tremendous team, a tremendous practice. You have innovated so much in your area of expertise. What do you want people to remember you for? What do you want to do next? What is the scope of your ambition, doctor?

I mean, the ultimate scope is to change the dental visit in general. But it's a very broad statement, and in order to get there, a lot has to happen. I would say a five- to seven-year plan is we're going to have many offices with almost APA-trained dentists in these offices with a certain standard of care and cosmetics because there is no recognized specialty by the American Dental Association. Anyone can do anything they want. It's like everyone doing oral surgery or everyone doing root canals. You can do it, but there are recognized specialties to where consumers or patients can go to a board-certified endodontist or a board-certified oral surgeon, but they can't go to a board-certified cosmetic dentist. So the idea is to transform our offices into that board certification so that patients know when they're going there they're getting a certain standard of care, even if I'm not personally doing it. 

The ultimate goal is to change the dental experience. Why technology in dentistry has not evolved at the pace of technology in other areas of the world is completely insane to me as a dentist. If you went to dental conventions and spoke to other dental companies and the people that sit on these boards… It's nothing against anyone, but we're not seeing the big picture as an industry. … You know what really generates the fear in a dental office? The noise, the smell all those things. Why are we still using air-driven hand pieces that make the super-loud noise when you go into someone's mouth? Why do we even have chairs that look like those dental chairs? They just look scary because it's the same dental chair from the early 1900s with a couple modifications, but basically, when you look at those old pictures in 1900s, there's not much [that is] different. So I would say the ultimate—after we really create a standard of care in our industry—it's to change dentistry in general and really bring innovative concepts to the everyday dental visit.

As a Millennial, I'm not ashamed to say I love TikTok as much as any member of Gen Z. I was recently scrolling through the app while working from home—er, I mean, after work!—and came across not one, not two, but three different videos referencing a classic, affordable staple: the L.L.Bean Boat & Tote Canvas Bag ($30). Don't you love it when the algorithm figures you out? 

Showing off a perfectly preppy outfit complete with an L.L.Bean tote, Tiktoker @jesicaelise said: "Very rarely will I let you forget that I spent way too much time at a private school." I felt that one. The video went viral with nearly half a million views and over 500 comments, with users gushing over their love for the timeless, incredibly durable tote bag, which debuted in 1944.

I also came across @aileciajones's video and then @mippapiddleton's, where she says she was influenced to buy the tote because of the two videos. Many people on TikTok adore the monogram service that L.L.Bean's website offers and have used it to write funny phrases on the bags instead of their names.

But if that wasn't enough proof of its surging popularity, our social media manager said she bought one last week because she saw an image on Pinterest of Carolyn Bessette Kennedy wearing it in 1997. Meanwhile, Chloë Sevigny and Reese Witherspoon carried—get it?—the bag into the 2010s.

Need a distraction from your 9-to-5? Or rather, another distraction after all the red carpet glory of the recent Met Gala in New York? Of course you do. Allow us to turn your attention to the illustrious Cannes Film Festival in the south coast of France, where dramatic dresses and couture gowns provide plenty of eye candy.

Stalwarts of the festival have so far stuck to personal dress codes. Julianne Moore stepped out in yet another red dress—this time a hand-embroidered caped column gown by Givenchy Haute Couture that was finished with feathers. (Last year she wore another crimson feather-trimmed gown also made by Givenchy Couture.) Cate Blanchett—chair of this year's jury—recycled a Georgio Armani Privé black lace gown she first wore to the Golden Globes in 2014, where she won the Best Performance in a Moving Picture award for her role in Blue Jasmine.

Penelope Cruz has up to now stuck to classic black, wearing an array of black dresses that include a fishtail-backed midi that she accessorised with Atelier Swarovski jewels, and a dramatic lace number with frothy tulle detailing.

Meanwhile, Fan Bingbing has worn pouffy dresses fit for a princess, including a nude pink couture Ralph & Russo gown that was covered in a delicate layer of sparkle.

The Met Gala might be beautiful, glamorous, and very exclusive, but the one thing it’s not is low-pressure. But you don’t have to take our word for it—mostly because we haven’t been there—you can simply listen to those who have walked the massive red carpet up the stairs at the Metropolitan Museum of Art on the first Monday in May.

In fact, most celebs don’t hold back when it comes to speaking about what the Met Gala is really like. Some gush about how over-the-top and special it is, others have a few gripes, and pretty often guests are simply thrilled to share how they saw Rihanna in the crowd. We relate the most to the latter.

So in preparation for Monday evening’s Heavenly Bodies: Fashion and the Catholic Imagination, take a look at some of the wildest remarks we found from those who’ve been inside the doors (and in front of a hundred red carpet cameras) of the Met Gala.

Few brands do red carpet dressing as well as ride-the-subway dressing. But Proenza Schouler is about to place itself on the short list with the launch of PSWL. And if the new campaign images of perennial cool girl Chloë Sevigny are not enough to get your attention, the amazing jeans and sweats will.

An acronym for Proenza Schouler White Label, the latest collection is an extension of the New York–based, fashion editor–loved brand’s ready-to-wear line, bringing it back to basics. In PS’s world, that’s high-waist denim, graphic T-shirts, camo pants, hoodies, and other wear-seven-days-a-week pieces.

“It has always been a goal of ours to fully develop a well-rounded and balanced collection that mixes the high-end with the everyday in a way that speaks to both many of our personal friends, and to the designer customer we’ve developed over the years,” co-founders Jack McCollough and Lazaro Hernandez shared in a press release. With this in mind, it also makes sense the two chose Sevigny to debut the designs—a woman whose style always looks thoughtful, personal, elevated, and effortless, be it on the red carpet or running errands downtown.

The full PSWL line officially drops on November 6, but be sure to preview some of the elevated everyday designs in the campaign below, all priced from $195 to $1195.

If you ever find yourself sitting across from Chloë Sevigny, there's one topic you should steer clear of: her personal style. Or more specifically, don't ask her to describe it. The model opened up in an online video as part of H&M x Kenzo's new campaign, since she is one of seven stars fronting the collection. She shared, "I wish I could disappear into character, but it doesn't really happen that way." She also talks about her work both in front of and behind the camera (she made her directorial debut this year).

In the video, Sevigny stands against a white backdrop, wearing a multiprint dress and pink zebra-print shoes from the upcoming collaboration (which launches November 3). The model is known for her own quirky-cool sense of style, so her spot as a campaign star seems like the perfect fit.

H&M posted two new photos, as well as a video, on its Instagram, revealing that Sevigny and Iman will be starring in the campaign for the collab. Rosario Dawson and Chance the Rapper will also be among the faces of the campaign. With these new images, it's official: We're counting down the days until the November 3 launch.

Chloë Sevigny stopped by our Sundance photo suite—the Who What Wear x Vida Tequila x Glam App Lounge on Main Street—to talk film, fashion, and more.

Sevigny is at the annual Park City, Utah, festival to promote her latest project, Love & Friendship, director Whit Stillman’s adaptation of the Jane Austen novel Lady Susan. In the comedy, she plays Alice, the American confidante of the cunning Lady Susan Vernon (played by a spectacular Kate Beckinsale).

“Lady Susan is a bit of a bad girl and has a reputation,” Sevigny says. “I think we all have girlfriends that we love and adore and are wild, and we kind of live out our fantasies through them and their brazenness.”

We certainly live out our style fantasies through the actress, who nailed winter dressing in a shearling Coach coat paired with a Gucci blouse and vintage Levi’s. Keep reading for more from our exclusive interview.

Who What Wear: What made you want to be a part of Love & Friendship?

Chloë Sevigny: I am just a fan of [director] Whit [Stillman]. I think he has such an original voice, and even though I know it’s an Austen and an adaptation, I knew he would infuse it with his own Whit kind of humor and pacing. I just think he is a true artist in the film industry, which there are a bunch of them out there, but they are not always knocking on my door, so I was really thrilled to work with him again. I loved working with him on Last Days of Disco. I love that movie. I’m so proud of it. I’d always wanted to do a period piece—you know, the sweeping period drama—so I was game!

WWW: Can you tell us about your character in the film, Alicia? What intrigued you about her?

CS: My character is an American in England, and she’s married to a respectable man played by Stephen Frye. She lives vicariously through her girlfriend Lady Susan, played by Kate Beckinsale. Lady Susan is a bit of a bad girl and has a reputation, and I think we all have girlfriends that we love and adore and are wild, and we kind of live out our fantasies through them and their brazenness. So I kind of related to [Alicia] in that way, because I have girlfriends who are so outspoken, bright, and witty. My best friend Natasha Lyonne, for instance. I’m always so enamored with her and how she can control herself in situations. It’s the same with my character and Lady Susan.

WWW: What did you enjoy most about filming this project?

CS: I think going through and working with the costume designer, and from the different layers of the undergarments and the fittings. It was such a fantasy. And they have such a handle on it. They do so many period pictures in Dublin, and everybody was just so enthusiastic and good at their craft. It’s nice to work with people who are really good at what they do.

WWW: The costumes are pretty spectacular! Did you find them challenging?

CS: I mean, not so much. The things one would think, like going pee. But probably all the volume, because we are not used to it. Of course I’m wearing a huge jacket today, which is often problematic, but the volume I think was the most surprisingly challenging thing to overcome. I think my favorite look was a pale blue look that I wore that was an actual vintage piece from the costume house in London.

WWW: You have been a style hero for so many women. Who are the stylish women who inspire you?

CS: Just friends of mine who are a little more adventurous in their style, like Liz Goldwyn in Los Angeles. I think she has amazing style. My friend Tara Subkoff has really great style. And my friend Lizzie Bucato, and Jen Brill in New York City. I think she always looks super cool in whatever she wears. They are my standouts. 

WWW: What’s your favourite piece you own?

CS: I have this hood that is from the ’40s. It’s a black cashmere hood and it has all these bronze sequins all over it. And of course, I live in New York and it’s very cold, so I’ve been wearing that a lot; it’s my new favourite piece. And it’s a piece that makes people really happy, and I like that a lot. I hear people who don’t even recognize me say, “Oh my God, look at her hood!” People audibly get excited about it and it’s nice to wear something that can make people smile. Sometimes my boyfriend is like, “Why are you wearing that crazy blue blah blah blah,” and I was like, “Because it makes women smile and I like to see that.” It’s fun.

WWW: Your jeans are amazing! What are the?

CS: These are Levi’s I actually wore in the ’90s, and they were really long. I used to step on them and there was that half-moon hole in the back. I wore them to the Venice Film Festival with Boys Don’t Cry in like ’99 or something. And I still fit in them, which is dope.

WWW: Can you tell us about your most recent fashion purchase or discovery?

CS: Oh God, I mean I purchase things almost every day—it’s my addiction. Funny enough, Tory Burch sent me these hiking boots for Sundance with red laces, and I was like feeling these weird Tory Burch hiking boots. They are going to be my jam back in New York City. I mean, I’ve always been into that classic ’80s red-lace hiking boot thing. Maybe I’ll incorporate them into some outfit while I’m here. It was kind of more like a surprising thing.

WWW: What has been the most rewarding part of your career thus far?

CS: I just actually directed my first short film called Kitty. It’s about a little girl who turns into a cat, and it stars a 7-year-old girl. I think that’s been the most rewarding. I’ve always wanted to do it but was not confident enough. But I somehow found the security in my relationship and where I am in my life, my age, that I was like I’m just going to do this. And not to toot my own horn or anything, but I think I did a really great job. It was really rewarding and just communicating to different people on set and the actors, I just felt really comfortable. Of course, it was only three days; if you had to sustain over a couple of weeks I think it would be a whole different thing. But I think I want to keep going with that.

WWW: Is there something you haven’t done in your career yet that you would like to explore?

CS: I think I would like to do more naturalistic style acting. I did a series on Netflix called Bloodline, and I feel like the acting was very naturalistic, and I’d like to do bigger parts. I think the only starring roles I ever had were Kids and Boys Don’t Cry, and I feel like I would like to have bigger, more challenging roles.
