Flats have been the dominant footwear choice of 2023, period. From ballerinas to Mary Janes, loafers to clogs, fashion people everywhere are forgoing stilettos in favour of comfortable (but no less stylish) flat shoes. And we predict this infatuation will last well into 2024, too.

But as we adjust to lower temperatures, the question on every flat-shoe fan's mind is, "Can this trend be adapted for the winter months?” The answer, I'm pleased to share, is yes—but with an asterisk. It's natural for boots to feel like the only safe option if you struggle with cold toes at this time of year, and this might well be the case for some, but we've seen first-hand how influencers have made daintier shoes work in chilly weather.

The below outfits are prime examples. As they suggest, long trousers, insulating coats and wool knitwear are key to ensuring you're cosy top-to-toe. From there, you can add socks or sheer tights to retain the heat in your feet. Simple.

At the first sign of snow or minus degrees, you might want to rethink some of these looks, but until then, get inspired by our round-up of the best winter flat shoe outfits.

2023 has granted us a year of defining trends and sweeping fashion phenomena. Microtrends have spanned from fruit-centred aesthetics (Tomato and Strawberry Girl), pop culture inspired Barbiecore and Mermaidcore, and then came the attainment of the quiet luxury aesthetic. Meanwhile, subdued trends have coasted alongside these and presented us with some of the most elevated styles of clothing.

Although the styles reinforced on the catwalk have been varied, the consensus for 2023 fashion is that extended hemlines are in and the notion of modest dressing is here to stay. What the micromini was to 2022, the maxi is to ’23. The styles introduced have included sweeping denim skirts, generous swathes of silk and free-flowing tailored trousers. Womenswear has become sleek and occasion-forward—from the fluidity and lustre of bias-cut dresses to longline waistcoats matched with full-circle skirts. Modest fashion has been celebrated by Islamic women for years and it’s now widely recognised for its stylistic references and refinement. Referring to less skin-bearing styles, it birthed a plethora of demure necklines—cowl, boat-neck, and rippled fabrics.

I’ve pulled six inspirational outfits from our Instagram favourites—from maxi skirts and blazer pairings to imaginative ways to elevate a poplin shirt. As we head towards autumn and the temperatures drop, these looks will undoubtedly come into their own and work on rotation in our wardrobes. I, for one, can't wait. When it comes to getting dressed, I'm a firm believer in the power of shoes and accessories. In fact, recent studies have shown that all it takes is a chic handbag or statement footwear to bring a rather basic look to new heights. It's not often that a designer collaboration really makes us sit up and pay attention, but you know when 2020's coolest dress brand joins forces with a high-street shoe brand that the results are going to be noteworthy. It's fair to say that Cecilie Bahnsen is up there with some of the hottest brands to grace the style stage over the last 12 months. Instantly recognisable by its puff-ball silhouettes, air-light fabrics and general angelic whimsy, Bahnsen's frocks have caught the imagination of the fashion crowd and helped lead the way in a new guard of Scandi designers. We have long been besotted. 

So you can imagine our excitement when we found out that it had created a beautiful capsule with Charles & Keith. Comprised of four flat shoe styles, the collection is inspired by classic Mary-Jane shoes and features Bahnsen's signature upcycled quilted satin fabric including one pop of canary yellow. 

"Historically, the Mary-Jane was not just a shoe for girls. Right into the 20th century, little boys wore them too", Bahnsen explains. "We made ours super feminine, more 'lady' than the shoes we've done before, working with patchwork and hand-drawn embroidery. It almost felt like we were morphing our dresses into a shoe."

My favorite part about my job is that I get to spend a lot of time shopping. Influencers could not get enough of the brand's expensive-looking designs, and there were a few pieces in particular that spiked. Up Next: Spring/Summer 2020 Fashion Trends: What We'll Be Wearing This Year

Hands up if you have more than one wedding this year? Assuming your hand is aloft, I feel your pain. I have four weddings dotted across my social calendar this year. Thankfully, I'm a bridesmaid for one of them, which means I don't have to worry about what I'm wearing to that one (we've already picked out our bridesmaid dresses from ASOS), but of the other three? I already find myself mentally planning my outfits. Or, I should say, outfit, as I intend on wearing the same look to all three. 

As a high-street girl through and through, that's precisely where I'm turning to find the perfect wedding ensemble. And honestly, it seems I'm spoilt for choice. New-in sections are flooded with fancy dresses, gorgeous shoes, and statement-making arm candy—not to mention sleek suiting and elegant skirts. As such, curating an expensive-looking wedding guest outfit on the high street has never been easier. 

Below, I've re-created some of the ensembles I've bookmarked with affordable pieces to give you an idea of the high-street wedding guest outfits you can create for yourself. Style Notes: We all know that pastel shades make for excellent wedding attire, but previously I would've avoided wearing them together at risk of looking too much like a sugared almond. However, a powdery dress paired with simple heeled shoes in contrasting pastels makes for a cool take on the trend. 

Style Notes: Dresses are always my first thought when it comes to assembling occasionwear, but I find skirts make for a pleasant change. Chances are you'll be the only one not in a frock or a suit, which is guaranteed to make you subtly stand out. 

Style Notes: If dresses and skirts just aren't your thing, suiting always has your back. For springtime, search for cropped-trouser styles to show off impressive shoes or anklets. 

Style Notes: While white clothing might be largely off-limits for wedding guests, white accessories are completely acceptable for ceremonies and evening invitations alike. I'll be wearing them with a puff-sleeve dress for trend-ticking purposes. 

Style Notes: Slip dresses often feel too lacking in coverage for weddings, particularly if you know it's going to be a religious ceremony. Cover up the cool-girl way with a blazer in a matching hue, which you can then ditch along with your shoes and bag when the party kicks off at nighttime. 

Style Notes: Minidresses are completely fine to wear to a wedding, but might we suggest giving a bit more thought to your shoes if you choose to go short? Instead of towering stilettos, opt for grown-up kitten or midi heels for a polished look.

It's really started to get a little frost-bitten out there. Yes, it's December and it's always this chilly, but I still never quite seem to be ready for it. Those of you that, unlike me, are prepared, seem to be beating the cold weather by swaddling yourselves in a shearling, borg or teddy-bear coats, and now I'm spotting the fuzzy texture crossing over to the bag department en masse. This winter, shearling bags are everywhere. 

It's no wonder that one of the snuggest and warmest fabrics around is becoming a cult favourite with the fashion crowd. We've been granted our fair share of "duvet" dressing over the years with quilted coats, skirts and jackets but this takes it to a whole new level.

The dynamic duo Proenza Schouler sent their models down the runway in tailoring and draping - punctuated with shearling pouch bags, artfully folded over and tucked under the model's arm. This is the perfect example of the versatility of this fabric and how darn good it looks with black leather. 

I love the evolution of this trend and how brands have utilised it in such varied ways. You have multiple hues from the ever-colourful Kurt Geiger, fluid shapes from Nanushka and artfully trimmed totes from Gucci and UGG x Telfar. Now while I'm on the topic of the latter, the two have come together to bring the shearling and suede experience of one to combine with the handbag genius of the other. They have created a scale of sizes, all adorning a shearling trimming to the logo and edges. 

Other cult brands who can boast that this isn't their first rodeo in the teddy/shearling department include Stand and Staud, so you won't be surprised to see them in the running for some of the best offerings out there right now. I'm not ashamed to admit it. When it comes to shoes and handbags, I'm a little bit obsessed. In fact, scratch "little bit." I've actually run out of storage space with the number of heels, boots, sandals, handbags, clutches and totes I've amassed over the years. I'm a firm believer that no matter how casual the outfit, a good pair of shoes or a statement bag can elevate an entire look. With that in mind, shoes and handbags are the two things that I never scrimp on (you can find a good white T-shirt almost anywhere, but a bag you'll use everyday is worth the investment), and I've often found shopping for elegant accessories on the high street to be a real challenge. Ask me to find a bag for under £50 or a pair of shoes for £80, and no doubt I can do it, but often they'll miss the details that make designer bags look really premium. However, there is one brand that has really changed the game with handbags and shoes that are affordable but don't actually look it. And it's been a staple in our editors' wardrobes for years. 

Singaporean label Charles & Keith launched in 1996 specialising in shoes and has since expanded to include jewellery, sunglasses and, of course, handbags. Although it only launched in the UK in 2018, it still feels like a well-kept industry secret (probably because we've been trying to keep it to ourselves), but that only means it's unlikely to bump into anyone who will know that your luxurious-looking shoes actually cost £50. Members of the Instagram crowd are already fans, with Brittany Bathgate and Freddie Harrel often spotted in Charles & Keith, but its exciting A-list following has grown over the last year, with Sienna Miller, Jennifer Lopez, Gigi Hadid and Emily Ratajkowski all wearing the brand's bags and shoes, so it's clear we've got a certified style staple on our hands.

After realising that no less than three members of team Who What Wear were wearing Charles and Keith accessories during London fashion week (editor in chief Hannah Almassi even owns the same pair of boots in three different colours), our group chat has been taken over sharing our favourite new styles and discussing what to add to our baskets next. So well, in fact, that I bought the black faux-suede and faux-leather as well as this creamy pair. Perfect for my '70s style, very comfy for a long day at work, and I know I'll wear them for many winters to come. Charles & Keith is really great for stylish low heels and for carrying key styles in multiple colourways."

"My love for my Charles & Keith Gabine bag isn't equated by the number of compliments I receive on it but, if it were, I would be borderline-levels-of-marrying-it infatuated. The sleek saddle shape, which loans itself to both day and night styling, and its simple but impactful brushed-gold buckle are key components in its broad appeal. I don’t know anyone who wouldn’t want this handbag in their collection. Considering the amount of wear I've got out of mine, it's held up remarkably well—more so than my limited selection of designer bags, in fact. Now, there's a real-leather iteration to choose from, too, which I'm tempted to invest in. When you're genuinely considering owning two of the exact same bag, you know you've got it bad."

The brand has, however, only recently upped its profile here in the UK, partly due to Game of Thrones star Maisie Williams carrying its £40 triangular pouch bag on the red carpet several times, and mega stars such J.Lo and Sienna Miller being snapped in their designer-rivalling designs too.

Walk a mile in these Louboutins? Ha–maybe try a few steps. I have quite the love-hate relationship with heels. Purchasing a pair feels like a game of fashion Russian roulette; will you end up buying the right pair that will be kind to your feet? Or will you end up cursing the day you ever bought them as they collect dust in the far reaches of your closet? It's a dangerous game, but thanks to some sage advice from fellow editors, my local cobbler, and a few veteran heel wearers, I've adopted a smarter approach to buying heels that have made my feet (and wallet) breathe a sigh of relief. 

Say goodbye to blisters, swelling, and numbness–I'm passing on the knowledge and sharing the top five things you should know before buying your next pair of heels. Write them down, or right-click save to your notes so you'll be primed and ready should the occasion arise. If you're tired of heels ruining your feet too, keep reading ahead.

1. Pay Attention To The Heel Cup

First things first: ever wonder why you get blisters in the first place? Manufacturers put a stiffening agent in the heel area, aka the counter of the shoe, so it retains its shape. As a result, the stiffness of the counter makes it a prime spot for friction and blisters. One way to combat this is to opt for shoes made of real leather or suede. These materials are more pliable than synthetic ones and will mold to the shape of your foot, thus reducing chafing after a few wears. Heel cushions can be useful as a second line of defense against friction if the problem persists.

2. Do The Thumb Test

It may sound like common sense (yet I've done this several times), but please do not buy heels that are not your size. Your shoes are guaranteed to hurt if you buy them too small! As a rule, there should be a thumb’s width from the front of the inside of your shoe to the end of your longest toe. Leaving this bit of space is crucial for your foot to have a little wiggle room as it moves within the shoe, rather than forcing it to create friction against the sides. Trust us, it makes all of the difference.

3. Take a Test Drive (or Walk)

Here's an obvious tip, that may not be so obvious. When you first try them on, don’t just stand up in the shoes and walk a couple of steps–take your time to really walk in them. If you've ever been to a department store you might have noticed that the shoe sales floor is covered in carpet. They are actually specially padded to heighten the appearance of comfort, so it helps to walk out of the area if it’s available, to try walking on the tile. Now that most of us are online shopping, keep the same process in mind when testing out heels in your home. Close your eyes so your sense of touch is heightened, and focus on how your feet feel. Look out for pressure at particular points, which is a sign of future blisters. Just remember to walk around on a lightly carpeted surface to avoid damage should you return them.

4. Platforms, Chunky Heels, and Low Heel Height Are Your Friends

These types of heels dominate my shoe collection for good reason. All of these things work to take the pressure off your foot, leaving you with pain-free feet at the end of the day. Conversely, you can expect that sky-high, single-soled stiletto heels will likely hurt your feet, but in this instance ball of foot cushions can help reduce foot sliding and absorb shock.

5. Try On Shoes at The End of the Day

Fun fact: your foot expands slightly throughout the day, especially in the summer because of the heat, so if possible try to test out your shoes towards the end of the day. If you buy shoes in the morning when your foot is at its slimmest, they may be too tight by the end of the day, so your sense of comfort may run skewed.
