One takeaway we’ve gotten from the past few years is to never underestimate the power of a good space. The difference between a good day and a mediocre day can be as small as the endorphins you get from a fanciful rug or a vivid coat of paint. But what makes a space truly sing? Of course, that answer relies partly on personal taste, but it also helps to look into the sea of interior trends for some guidance. 

If you have opened any social media app over the past two years, you’ve probably scrolled past enough abstract mirrors and checkered rugs to last a lifetime, but as of the last few months, the tides are changing. While interior trends don’t circulate at such a rapid-fire pace as the fashion showing on the runways, the two worlds inform each other in unexpected ways—take Barbiecore and the resurgence of pink walls. But the popularity of pink is only a drop in the proverbial bucket of ideas gaining traction among the design community right now. For a glimpse into what’s next, we turned to four figures well-versed in both interior design and fashion to tell us the home décor themes, concepts, and objects primed for a big moment in 2023. 

Whether the intent was to be noncommittal to one paint color or to avoid the nightmarish scenario of wallpaper application, white became the wall "color” of choice for many renters and homeowners. But according to Tiffany Howell, founder and principal designer of L.A.-based interior design studio Night Palm, the white-wall era is reaching its expiration date. "A lot of people really want jewel tones. Almost every client that we’re working with right now wants beautiful colors, like rust and green—colors that are very soothing but not like how it used to be where you immediately defaulted to white,” she says. One of the most popular ways to interpret this trend has been two-toned cabinets—painting the upper and lower rows of cabinets in contrasting colors to create a striking visual effect. For those unafraid to go a more drastic route, interior designer and content creator Madelynn Furlong Hudson anticipates a lot more monochromatic coordination, where one room is entirely in one color. Although baby pink wall paint seems to have the internet buzzing (LPA founder Pia Baroncini recently painted most of her Los Angeles home in the color), the general consensus is that it doesn’t seem to matter which shade you choose. However, if you need some suggestions, Furlong Hudson stands behind pale watery blue, while interior designer Athena Calderone, like Howell, cites green and terra-cotta as two standout tones.

Cancel the flight, and let the vacation come to you—at least, that’s the sentiment behind one interior concept that’s been catching on among particularly stylish people. Instead of traveling abroad for a dose of escapism, it’s as easy as walking into a room. "All my clients that just bought homes are buying old Italian and European-looking villas here in Los Angeles. They’re like, ‘Ooh, I want my house to look like that villa in Italy I used to go to but haven’t been to because of COVID.’ So we’re all very much leaning into this right now, like Call Me by Your Name and Chateau Marmont—everyone wants those references,” explains Howell.

After nearly two years of travel being off the table, it’s understandable that a sense of wanderlust has entered the chat. Naturally, bright light, warm wood tones, and airy linen furniture help sell the vision of resort life, but Howell also notes that it’s just as important to capture the overall emotion within the design process. "I like to start with an emotional landscape and then lean into it,” she says. While it helps to have the good bones of a Spanish-style villa, buying a house isn’t necessary to achieve a personal worldly oasis—it can be as simple as swapping out heavy drapes for breezy linen curtains or decorating shelves with objects from abroad, like this stunning candelabra Furlong Hudson recently picked up Mexico City.

From travertine sinks to marble backsplashes, stone has proven itself as a hot commodity. Howell, Furlong Hudson, and Calderone all predict it’ll be a recurring theme into next year, with extra emphasis on using the raw material in unexpected tones and in unexpected ways. Instead of opting for beige travertine, Hudson notes that red variations are popping up as an accent color. "It’s about artful marble. But now we’re finding tones of beautiful pinks and deep blues and, again, kind of going back to the jewel tones too, like deep-green marble,” says Howell. Calderone’s most recent venture—a collaboration with Crate and Barrel—is an accessible way to embrace the trend, with objects like coral-colored marble serving platters and a deep-red plinth that can be used as a side table or nightstand. Another side to the statement stone trend is the use of exotic slabs of marble, granite, and soapstone to create commanding pieces that serve as the centerpiece of a room. Think a huge marble accent wall or soapstone countertops that extend into a visually stunning backsplash. These interior moments are an opportunity to let the full glory of the stone shine through. As Howell points out, "We’re doing baths in it. We’re fabricating tables in it. It’s a luxury well spent. It can stand alone and be its own art piece. If you have a beautiful marble table in a room, everyone’s just gonna focus on that and be obsessed with that.” 

Nostalgia always has a commanding presence in design—at any given moment, a particular decade has a firm grasp over the industry. A few years ago, it was mid-century modern, and until last year, postmodernism’s ’80s pop-art influence triggered renewed interest in Ettore Sottsass Ultrafragola mirrors and Kartell stools. Next up? The warm-toned, low-slung aesthetic of the ’70s. The online marketplace 1stDibs, which carries luxury and vintage furniture, reported that vintage pieces from the ’70s experienced the highest growth year over year within the furniture market. Rare finds from the decade represent the pieces Night Palm clients request most. "Definitely a hundred percent would be ’70s, European-style vintage furniture,” says Howell. Kellie Brown, a purveyor of vintage furniture who’s also a full-time content creator, knows to thrift one-of-a-kind pieces most people would think impossible. She’s been able to source coveted finds from the depths of Facebook Marketplace and Instagram, but two design icons from the ’70s are at the top of her vintage wish list. "The pieces I NEED to own with my entire soul are a leather convertible sleeper sofa by De Sede or an Alessandro Becchi sofa bed,” Brown says. She also finds a lot of her current inspiration from old design books from the era.

Along with the pendulum swing toward vibrant colors are rich and sensory textures that are delightfully over-the-top. "A lot of people are really wanting jewel tones and very rich, luscious color,” Howell explains. "People really want romantic paint colors, textures, and shapes, for instance, curves rather than angular and straight lines.” There’s a reason sumptuous jewel tones and velvet flash across our brains when we think of nobility—they’ve historically signified material wealth and status. According to 1stDibs’ annual survey, which polled 750 interior designers from around the world, emerald green was the number one color of choice for designers this year, with cobalt also trending as a popular shade. As Howell explains, minimalist fatigue is partly to blame for a collective demand for unabashedly extravagant things that are the antithesis of quiet luxury. The key mood, she says, is glamour. "It’s a really big word right now. I think people almost feel guilty about using the word glamour in this day and time, but I would say there is an excitement about glamorizing people’s houses.”

It takes one bad iPhone photo to realize how impactful bad lighting can be. And before lamps and light fixtures are relegated as a finishing touch to a space, experts like Calderone and Howell argue that lighting should be at the forefront. "It sets the mood in more ways than one—both functional and decorative, it calibrates the vibe. A beautiful glow from a sculptural light can really make a space,” says Calderone. Like that expensive couch that centers a room, a statuesque lamp can equally ground a space and provide nuance. "Good lighting is the beautiful earrings of the home. You don’t need much—vintage light fixtures or sconces can immediately elevate a room. You might not even realize it, but lighting can truly affect your disposition,” Howell explains. And the options on the market are seemingly endless: From contemporary brutalist chandeliers to Danish-inspired wood lamps, they’ve all been favorites within design circles as of late, but soft, emotive lighting à la Noguchi’s famed paper lamps is most noticeable. "I went to Mexico City for the first time in December last year and visited several of Luis Barragán’s projects. There was a space or table in every room of his private home that was draped in fabric and doubled as an altar. A couple of months later I noticed the same draping of fabric on the altar in so many of the ancient churches in Venice, and ever since then, I’ve been drawn to lighting, especially vintage, that is made from fabric or has that soft drapery that I was seeing in Barragán’s home and the ancient chapel in Venice,” Calderone recalls. "At Salone [the Milan Furniture Fair], Ladies & Gentlemen Studio showcased a pendant with layers of draped linen. There is something so moving about seeing glass elements that are cold and slick counterbalanced by this soft lighting draped in fabric, silk, or paper.”

While the home has always been a place of intimacy, Brown and Calderone say the New Year is about displaying off-beat touches that showcase our inner selves. "I’m excited about individuality. Cookie cutter is never interesting,” says Brown. "Creating a space you’re happy with is all that matters.” What individuality looks like in a space is up to interpretation, but an unconventional wall treatment is one way to do it. "I’ve noticed a lot of people draping fabric on the walls and actually using it as a decorative treatment, accentuating the drapiness and softness. People are starting to embrace something that feels whimsical and softer,” says Calderone.

Stains be damned. There’s an emerging home décor trend I don’t think even the most type A clean freaks are ready for: spa-core. It’s pretty much everything you’d expect from such a name. Think palettes of calming shades like oatmeal and white along with earthy, minimal accents. It's a "less is more” approach that’s meant to soothe and relax versus overwhelm the eye.

Perhaps the best example yet of the aesthetic comes from none other than the queen of neutrals, Kim Kardashian. In an IG post captioned "My fave room in the house,” Kardashian unveiled a glimpse of her infamously bare living room (if you’ve seen that episode of "73 Questions,” you’ll know exactly what I mean), in which nothing in the room is darker than a piece of toast. Immediately, my thoughts jumped to all of the likely scenarios in which I’d completely ruin a pristine space like that with accidental coffee stains. Next, I couldn’t help but marvel at its stylish immaculateness.

While the shift toward neutral décor has long been a thing, especially for millennials, spa-core takes things to a whole new level of minimalism. There seems to be a few pillars to achieving such a zen, spa-like atmosphere. A white couch is a key element as well as a light-colored rug to help pull everything together, among more. Yes, it may require some upkeep, but there’s nothing a bit of bleach and a Magic Eraser can’t fix.

The Key Pieces

Piece #1: The Sofa

A common thread for those who stick to the spa-core interior aesthetic is the white couch. It may sound like an exercise in futility, but owning one isn’t as demanding as you would think. (Even a sometimes messy eater like me can keep one clean.) I love how it instantly brightens up a room, adding a feel of airiness you can’t get with a darker-colored couch. If you’re still concerned with long-term durability, a slip-covered option is infinitely easier to clean. Bouclé, on the other hand, is the It fabric of the moment.

Piece #2: The Rug

Now, let’s move on to the next order of business—the rug. Not only does it serve as the centerpiece of the room, but it also sets the soothing tone for the rest of the space. I know a neutral carpet doesn’t sound like the most exciting thing, but feel free to play with varying degrees of muted patterns for a little more interest. Some advice: Avoid bright-white rugs and opt for shades of creamy beige or off-white for a warmer effect. 

Piece #3: The Chair

Whether you’re thinking about creating a zen-like sanctuary for your living room or bedroom, a comfy accent chair is always a wise choice. Beyond the practicality of additional seating, it creates extra dimension by bringing another element to your space. Since sticking with light, neutral tones is the goal, a quirky shape can bring some charm in lieu of bold colors.

Sourcing an authentic vintage mushroom lamp isn't easy and is expensive, which also adds to its enigmatic charm, but you can thank retailers like Urban Outfitters for making the trend more accessible with their collections of glass lamps. Although they won't hold the same resale value, they're equally as captivating.

Bent Out of Shape 

One of the coolest design trends to emerge recently is cobra-like bent lamps. They're a little different than the mid-century arched floor lamps we've seen before, in that these feature an S shape that creates a curvy silhouette. Danish Caprani lamps are probably the most known style of the bunch, and they definitely don't come cheap—expect to pay over a grand for one that's in good vintage condition. On the flip side, Ferm Living's Arum lamp is a cheaper alternative.

Paper Party

For years, I swore off paper lantern lamps. I thought they were too boring and cheap looking, but dare I say that my mind has been forever changed after discovering Isamu Noguchi's light sculptures. (I know—I'm late.) The designer totally transformed mulberry bark paper and bamboo into coveted works of art with light fixtures in various whimsical shapes and patterns. Even decades after his passing, Noguchi's influence has ushered in a new wave of paper lamps that are dominating the design scene.

Space-Age

Of course, we had to sprinkle in a little bit of mid-century modern. As it's still a dominant genre of interior decorating, retro-futuristic lamps from this period are hot commodities. Sure, you could buy a Gae Aulenti–designed lamp for a small fortune, but a more affordable way to interpret this trend at home is to check out Etsy. It's a great place to find space-age lamps for much less than what you'll find at a design studio, and there's a great selection. Meanwhile, you can find reproductions of Giancarlo Mattioli's famed Nesso lamp (also a fashion-girl favorite) across a number of online retailers.

Fashion creators like to shake things up, so it's completely expected when an eccentric lamp trend like this one shoots up out of nowhere. If you're looking for something completely unconventional and memorable, these spiral lamps really deliver when it comes to making your space stand out. One of my favorites is artist Oscar Piccolo's squiggly lamp. Since it debuted a few years ago, it has quickly gained cult status and is almost always sold out.

Here's a bubbling trend I predict will only get bigger from now: funky, hand-sculpted ceramic lamps. This aesthetic welcomes the imperfect forms of handworked materials and feels earthy yet sophisticated. Think objects with unusual shapes or unique curves and dents that look organic. If you're into Japandi-style or rustic-looking interiors, this is the lamp trend for you.

Interior design has always been a passion of mine, but it wasn't until this year—with a lot of time on my hands and a cross-country move in the works—that I became a full-fledged member of the Instagram home décor community. The social media platform is literally full to the brim of A1 interior inspiration, whether it's brilliant young artisans sharing snaps of one-of-a-kind pieces they recently produced or interior designers posting scans from decades-old issues of Architectural Digest. With months of stalking home décor accounts under my belt, I definitely have noticed a shift in the types of pieces and styles the design community has gravitated toward. The mid-century modern craze has held steady for a minute, and I honestly don't think it will fade away anytime soon, and naturally, chrome and futuristic lamps have become two of the popular trends of the moment. Also reemerging as a big one to watch? Seventies-inspired burl furniture—from side tables to picture frames and more, the unique finish has supplanted walnut as the wood of choice. Remember when you'd buy a whole dining set with a matching table and chairs? Well, that's pretty much on the back burner. The idea is to find loosely corresponding pieces you really love and throw them all together. Think chairs in a different color than the dining table or a group of dining chairs of varying styles. The result is a space that feels eclectically rustic and personal.

If you have a tropical plant, this isn't a call to immediately give it away. Fresh plants will never not be in style, but I've noticed a few varieties that are particularly in favor right now. A few years ago, the monstera craze wiped out nearly the entire supply of the variety in all of my local garden stores, and now, dwarf trees are becoming sparse. From large ficuses to mini olive varieties, these trees are used to ground a room in a way that brings nature indoors. After being inside for over a year, a little dose of the outdoors feels like a welcome proposition.

Yes, mid-century modern design is still alive and well. Even more than 50 years later, millennials especially can't stop buying futuristic 1960s Italian lamps and Herman Miller furniture. You'll notice that items featuring the metal finish, like mirrors and dining chairs, are all very quick to sell out at places like Etsy and CB2. While decorating my new apartment, I too went on a chrome blitz, buying a Sonneman-inspired table lamp for my sideboard. You can easily inject this trend into space with a vintage light fixture or a mini side table, but to avoid a clash, keep the metals within your room to one shade.

Three months into 2021, and I could probably count the number of times I've left my house on two hands. Needless to say, my apartment has become where I spend 90% of the time, so why not transform it into an ideal sanctuary? As you may know, I spend a lot of time thinking about home decor–it's my second passion next to clothing–and lately, I've been getting a lot of inspiration from fashion IT girls and tastemakers alike. There are about as many ways to decorate your interiors as ice cream flavors at Baskin-Robbins, but I've noticed a particular aesthetic fashion girls flock to most. You've likely already seen a bunch of these distinct items, like those charming glass lamps that resemble a mushroom and twisty, eccentric candles almost too pretty to burn. This genre of decorating is all about playful, fun objects that spark joy when looking at them–and I definitely could use surroundings that lift my mood after working from home for months on end. Mushroom Lamps

A few years ago I started noticing these adorable lamps showing up all over my fellow fashion editors' homes. Fast forward to today, and now glass mushroom lamps are one of the biggest home decor trends embraced by It girls around the world. Essentially it's a revival of mid-century modern style, specifically Italy's famed Murano lamps. You can buy them vintage, or secondhand on Etsy as I've done in the past, but they come at a pretty penny. Urban Outfitters and West Elm have recently released similar mushroom lamps that capture the same vibe at a fraction of the cost.

Most people may consider mirrors as wholly utilitarian–simply to check for smeared lipstick or to make sure no unidentified stains have made their way to your pants–but for fashion people, a mirror is a statement. When you're constantly snapping outfit photos for the 'gram, not just any mirror will do, you need one with wow factor. Bi-Rite Studio's Capsule Mirror has a cult following in the design world, but if you're on a budget, you can catch a few options from Cb2 on sale.

High Impact Coffee Tables

As the centerpiece of a living room, coffee tables truly set the tone for the rest of your space. A design-forward one will stand out–even if the rest of your other furniture leans minimal. In the vein of the mid-century modern craze, chrome coffee tables in particular are on the rise.

I consider a good rug one of the most important decor investments to make, which may be partly why half of my saved folder right now is full of them. You may already be familiar with Cold Picnic's abstract rugs (they're a favorite among design junkies), and after owning two I can say they're worth every penny. Like almost anyone breathing, I miss going to restaurants. I miss the days of sporadic lunch dates with friends and getting to catch up with family over large plates of jerk chicken on Sunday. And of course, there's the added convenience of not having to dirty your own dishes and deal with cleaning them later. We’ve all been there—rummaging through our closet in search of the perfect shoes to finish off an outfit, only to find that despite our best shoe organizing efforts, our boots, stilettos, and sneakers have jumbled into one large pile of footwear. To rid ourselves of the struggle, we turned to experts Kitt Fife and Joni Weiss of Practically Perfect LA to tell us their best practices for maintaining a closet where your shoes will be in order and the time you spend getting ready will decrease. Who doesn’t want that?

Find the storage option that works for you.

While some people prefer to keep their shoes in neat boxes, others might find the boxed system unnecessary. “If you’re not someone who wants to add an extra step to the process, or you like to try several options before you commit to a pair of shoes, this system might cause more frustration than it’s worth,” Weiss says. If you do keep your shoes in boxes, they recommend labeling your boxes or even taking photos.

Alternate the direction of your shoes.

“If space is tight, place one shoe from each pair forward and the other one backward,” the duo advises. This not only makes each pair take up less space, but you’ll also be able to get a full view of the shoes you’re reaching for.

Group different types and styles of shoes together.

Fife and Weiss say that it’s helpful to keep your shoes grouped by the occasion and activity. “If you’re tight on space, keep your most frequently worn pair of shoes within reach and your special occasion shoes in another area of the closet or house.”

Keep your shoes off the floor.

Whenever possible, they advise, keep your shoes on shelves rather than the floor to avoid any dust that might collect on your favorite pairs. It’ll also keep your shoes visible which will result in more wear.

Opt for slanted shelves.

According to Fife and Weiss, angled shelves are ideal for the best visibility when it comes to your shelves. If you can find vented or breathable shelves, that’ll also keep your shoes from collecting too much dust.

Use a divided organizer.

Store your flats and sandals in a divided organizer, such as a desktop file organizer. This will keep your pairs neatly together, plus finding a matching set will be completely seamless.

Consider shoe care products.

To streamline the process of caring for your shoes, Fife and Weiss recommend keeping all of your shoe cleaning supplies, such as cleaners, protectant sprays and more, in a basket near your shoes.
