Australia is an isolated country. We're an island that takes the rest of the world at least a day to get to (excluding our New Zealand friends) and has it's own unique fashion aesthetic and style.

The trends in Australia don't always line up with the rest of the world, not only because we're in the opposite season, but because our lifestyle requires different wardrobe staples. Linen pieces may not be as wearable in New York, but here, anything made with the breathable fabric is a staple of an Australian summer wardrobe.

Swimwear Australia: Earthy Ribs

Australians are loving swimwear in earthy and monotone colours, with a ribbed texture. Black, olive and white seem to be the most sought-after colours this season with deep wine also emerging as a popular choice. 

Rest of The World: Bold One-Pieces

Overseas, the neon trend has popped up in swimwear, but if you can't see yourself wearing neon, bright colours like yellow and red seem to be favoured, as are polka dot prints.

Here, we're all about dresses in bright colours and bold prints like neon, checks, and fruity details.

Rest of the world: Slim Sand

A slimmer silhouette is being worn overseas, with a Jacquemus-inspired sand the colour of choice for influencers. 

HeelsAustralia: Little Kittens

Kitten heels are all over Instagram. The heel works of the laid-back Australian lifestyle by being comfortable and easy to walk in. 

Rest of the world: Skinny Straps

If you scroll through your Instagram, international influencers are wearing strappy sandals. By Far, The Row and Jonak are popular choices.

David Jones's newest ambassador, Victoria Lee, was a true highlight, wearing a black plunging gown, while Jessica Gomes opted for a white off-the-shoulder look. Unless you’ve been on complete social-media detox, you’ve probably noticed that basically every single fashion blogger has been posting photos of tortoiseshell earrings on Instagram lately. While we can’t explain it, something feels so right about these resin earrings.

Maybe it’s because they remind us of our favourite summer sunglasses, or maybe it’s because they strike the perfect balance between being a statement piece and an essential basic. Regardless, we decided to do a little digging to discover where everyone has been getting these amazing accessories. And when we say, “everyone”, we aren’t exaggerating. Chloe Hill, Brooke Testoni, Jiawa Liu, Carmen Hamilton, Nadia Fairfax… you get the point.

Thankfully, the popularity of the earrings made it pretty easy to track down the brand behind the masterpiece: Valet Studio. All we had to do was look at who our favourite bloggers were tagging in their Instagram pics, and the mystery was solved.

According to the brand’s website, “Each VALET Jewellery piece is carefully handmade with unique coloured resin and 18k gold-filled hardware.” Considering that, the moderate price point seems quite reasonable for jewellery you could easily wear every day. Thankfully, they make their signature resin earrings in a variety of shapes and colours (if tortoiseshell isn’t your thing), meaning that no matter your style, you’re sure to find a pair you like.

The David Jones A/W 18 presentation was last night, and unsurprisingly, it drew some of Australia’s most fashionable together. Always a fair predictor of what the upcoming season has in store, models among the ranks of Jessica Gomes, Victoria Lee, Mali Koopman, and Jenella Powell showcased trends we can expect to see more of as the seasons change. While there were many amazing style moments on the runway featuring dark, floral prints and bold colours, some amazing things were happening off the runway as well.

After all, it makes sense that the guests of such an event would have a personal interest in style as well.
