Leave it to the Queen in the North to show up to her husband's ex-girlfriend's SNL party looking like a ray of sunshine—and debuting one of this season's top trends. Fashion Week Australia kicked off this afternoon with Camilla and Marc opening the schedule. It's been five long years since Camilla and Marc's last fashion week show, and the label's highly anticipated return did not disappoint. From the incredible set that transported the audience to another planet, to the star-studded front row (we spotted everyone from Elsa Pataky, to Sylvia Jeffreys, and Carmen Hamilton), every element of the show set the tone for the week ahead. 

The brand turns 15 this year, and it made perfect sense to return to fashion week—right where it all began in 2003. So to get a little insight on the preparation that goes into it, we spoke to Camilla Freeman-Topper. The brand’s co-founder opened up about how the brand has evolved, and a whole lot more. Read on for the interview, and your first look at Camilla and Marc Resort 19. 

How does it feel to kick off Fashion Week Australia?

We’re all feeling hugely nostalgic. It’s been five years since our last Australian fashion week show, and we’re really looking forward to returning and opening the week. It’s also a big celebration moment for us—it’s our 15 year anniversary so it’s been a really beautiful time to stop, pause and appreciate how far we’ve come.

How has your brand grown since you first participated in fashion week? 

We’ve learnt a lot, we’ve grown a lot and as we’ve evolved personally, so has the business.

What was the inspiration behind this season’s collection?

Resort 19 explores what’s next—future—through the lens of powerful women throughout time that have shaped our notion of beauty. The show set we’ve created for the collection reflects the theme of boundlessness and a sense of boldness, embodying a new age female. One of vitality and strength—setting her own path for the future.

Reflection was also a strong theme throughout the design process. Not only the qualities reflected in the women who inspired us, but we found ourselves deep in reflection in our 15 year anniversary. A big part of that was appreciating our journey, our story, our Australian heritage and what we’ve learnt along the way. It is for this reason that the qualities of reflection—found in fabrications and rich textural detailing—form part of the collection and a big part of the show set.

In our 15th year, that notion of forward thinking also tied into so many aspects of this show—looking ahead at growth and the eternal, timeless qualities that will continue to inspire our design, our brand and the Camilla and Marc woman.

How do you draw from the collection when planning for the show?

The theme of the show is a creative process that starts with a strong creative brief. Every element of the collection—from the clothing to the production and set —starts with one creative vision.

What’s the best part about prepping for a fashion show?

Working creatively with such a big and amazing team. I can’t express how much appreciation I feel for all the long hours my team have put in. We’ve had hundreds of people working on our show from the creative, design, production, music and communication teams.

What is one thing that people don’t realise goes into putting on a show like this?

It’s such a huge process—it’s a eight month lead up with over 400 people working on the show which lasts all of 15 minutes. There’s enormous effort that goes into providing a wonderful branded experience for the guests that attend the show, and an equal amount of energy that goes into the digital experience we create for customers to experience all around the world.

What are you most looking forward to at Fashion Week Australia this year?

Creating an amazing and immersive experience for our guests and celebrating with my team post show.

Are there any new designers you’re especially excited to see present?

We love to see and support all of the established and emerging Australian designers throughout Fashion Week Australia. Supporting the Australian fashion industry is something we are very passionate about.

Fashion Week Australia is here, and we can’t wait to see the batch of fresh talent cropping up from our country’s best designers. Though the digital age is begging the question of whether fashion shows are still relevant in this overly-saturated Instagram age, Fashion Week Australia provides a valuable opportunity for new designers to get their foot in the door.

In fact, Camilla and Marc, the brand kicking off the week this year had its debut at Fashion Week Australia back in 2003—and it’s not the only brand. Fashion Week Australia is arguably the most important event for the Australian fashion industry. While it might not garner as much international attention as fashion weeks in New York, London, and Paris, it deserves our attention and recognition for the platform it has created, and will continue to create, for rising Australian fashion designers.

Over the years, Fashion Week Australia has introduced a number of designers who have gone on to become household names both here and overseas. Camilla and Marc, Zimmerman, Ksubi, Sass & bide… each of these brands launched at Fashion Week Australia, so why has the collective attitude towards the event become so blasé? Based on these designers' renowned successes, Fashion Week Australia has empirically proven to be an amazing platform for up-and-coming designers; and that’s something that should be welcomed and celebrated.

If Australian fashion is going to continue to find success internationally, support starts at home. And with a lineup featuring so much widespread talent, who wouldn't want to get behind a new generation of design?

This year’s Fashion Week Australia has some of fashion’s biggest up-and-coming names to boast for 2018. From famous designers alice McCALL to Camilla, this year’s fashion week schedule is packed full of talent, including some noteworthy newcomers who are sure to influence fashion internationally in coming seasons. Take BLAIRARCHIBALD and Thomas Puttick, for example, both brands which have been awarded the prestigious Woolmark Prize. Or Deadly Ponies, the leather-centric accessories label started by New Zealander, Liam Bowden. And what about those baggy pants your favourite celebrities and Instagram influencers have been sporting lately? We have the buzzy I.AM.GIA to thank for that, which has built up a particularly impressive cult-like following after launching only last year.

Needless to say, there is a lot to look forward to this year at Fashion Week Australia; and while fashion weeks always beg the question of how relevant runways are in this digital age, the success stories leave us rest assured that it's a worthwhile endeavour. Thus, let us all embrace Fashion Week Australia, and see it as a chance to discover the next shining star in our industry. Fashion Week Australia is an amazing opportunity for us to embrace the art, culture, and creativity of our local talent. Only in fostering our own designers and their individuality can we continue to grow and evolve the Australian fashion scene. So it’s time to applaud our fashion at home, and chances are, the world respond with a standing ovation.

After keeping up with fashion month shows in New York, Paris, London, etc., we’re starting to get excited for our own here in Australia. Granted, it is still a while away (May 13-17, to be exact) but that doesn’t mean we’re not already anticipating what we’ll see at Mercedes Benz Fashion Week Australia (MBFWA) this year.

As much as we love spotting the street style trends that other cities are experimenting with, Australian style is a little different. Being in a different hemisphere, with different seasons, it makes sense that we do things in our own way—and we can’t wait to see what designers have come up with for resort this season. While we will have to wait until the shows to be certain about which Australian trends are going to be big this upcoming year, we do at least know some of the names we can expect to see showing at MBFWA.

Today, the preliminary schedule has been released for fashion week—and it already has us buzzing. If the news that Camilla and Marc are kicking off the week wasn’t exciting enough to amp you up, the participation of these brands at Fashion Week Australia is sure to start inspiring some fashion week frenzy. Mercedes-Benz Fashion Week Australia (MBFWA) is around the corner, and needless to say, we’re getting excited. As fun as it is to watch all the fashion weeks occurring around the globe, we can’t help but note that Australian style is a little different. Perhaps because of the opposing seasons, or just the distance, our style is unique—and we’re ready to see what that looks like in 2018 and beyond.

CAMILLA AND MARC has been announced as the 'Mercedes-Benz Presents' designer, meaning the 15-year old label will open Fashion Week Australia.

“We are thrilled to open Mercedes-Benz Fashion Week Australia in 2018.” Camilla Freeman-Topper shares, “It was our platform to launch the brand in 2003 and we have enjoyed many highlights together.” Speaking from personal experience, Marc Freeman added that Fashion Week Australia is “a fantastic platform for young, up-and-coming and established designers to present their collections and amplify to a local and global audience.”

If the opening show is any indication of what we can expect of Fashion Week Australia, this seems like a good sign. CAMILLA AND MARC is undeniably a favourite when it comes to Australian labels, so hearing that they will kick off the fashion week seems fitting.

Though May might sound like it’s an eternity away, Fashion Week Australia will be here before we know it. Given this news, we’re anticipating it will be a good year for fashion in Australia. While the options are slightly more limited, you’re still sure to find something among its 1,000 styles. Your Closet is like the little sister of Glam Corner, with a strong focus on Australian-based designers. Your Closet charges a $5 insurance policy to cover any wear and tear. For some of the more popular dresses, there are reviews by past renters available with photos of them wearing the dress. Because things can fit so differently in person than they may look in a flat image online, this feature is helping you determine which dresses will actually flatter your figure.

Her Wardrobe

Her Wardrobe features Australian Designers, renting both dresses and accessories. While this site may have less options than Glam Corner and Your Closet, there are a few features that really make Her Wardrobe stand out. Perhaps the most affordable option, Her Wardrobe features styles starting from only $50—and that includes delivery and return! In addition, the online chat feature on the website makes it easy to get help while trying to find your perfect dress. Not only that, but once you’ve found it, Her Wardrobe automatically suggests accessories to help you complete the look, making the whole process of figuring out what to wear easier than ever. My favourite feature of this site, however, is the “Shop Her Insta” feature, which lets you shop from the Her Wardrobe Instagram featuring photos of customers in their rented dresses. Because it can be so difficult to tell what a dress looks like in “real life," I love being able to see how the dresses look in action.

Something Borrowed

Like the idea of renting, but not a fan of online shopping? Something Borrowed is a great option for girls who live in Melbourne, Perth, and Adelaide. Slightly different from the other rental services, Something Borrowed is actually a boutique-based enterprise. While the concept of renting and returning is still there, Something Borrowed operates as a shop where you go in and try on dresses in person. The cost of rental is per weekend, and you can either take the dress home the same day, or book it for the future. The experience of trying on before renting ensures that your rented dress will fit, and the cost includes an appointment with a stylist who helps you pick the perfect look, accessories included!

The Volte

Sydney based company, The Volte, describes itself as, “a modern marketplace that allows you to invest in your style”. More similar to a sales platform (think eBay), The Volte is based around “Borrowers” and “Lenders”. If you’re only looking to rent, there are over 5,000 styles to borrow, ranging from about $60 to $2,000. One great feature of The Volte is the “shop by closet” option. If you find a lender whose style you love or whose clothes fit you perfectly, you can sort out their rentals among the thousands and continue renting from them. Perhaps the most exciting prospect of The Volte however, is the idea that you can also make money off of the clothes sleeping in the back of your own closet by renting them out as well. Once you sign up, it’s free to list clothes on the site. You’re only charged a 15% service fee if a piece actually rented, which is not bad considering that all you have to do is upload the item and be responsible for shipping.

Australian label Camilla and Marc has long been a popular choice for our fashion editors here at Who What Wear Australia HQ, being a go-to for cocktail dressing, as well as this season's biggest winter trend — chic and stylish suits. But recently there's one style that's been popping up all over Instagram and it looks like celebrities are crushing on the green Cinzia print. It's really tricky to nail your wardrobe style each season without wanting to splurge on big ticket items. If you're trying to save money this winter, take a different approach by using add-on details to maximise style without the need to invest in new (more expensive) items, such as coats and jeans. Same but oh so different: the long silk tie. If you can't manage the feminine square neck tie , or the fuss of a scarf, try wrapping a long silk tie this around your neck once or twice for a not so overly feminine approach. Good news: this is wearable all year round, not just for winter. 

The fishnet trend has come and gone but classic black tights will never date. A great way to keep your dresses on rotation in winter is to invest in a good pair of quality tights to take you through the season. Stick to good quality tights as cheaper brands will snag and pull instantly. 

To elevate the heels you currently have sitting in your wardrobe; try ankle straps made street style popular by Attico. Don't save these for the weekend, they're office and meeting appropriate, too. 

So fresh and chic: The white ankle boot is loved equally by the likes of Alexa (above) and Gigi. Don't fret about trying to match the white with more white, as they pair well with denim and blocked colour. For something more daring, the metallic boot is another shoe trend that will also bring last year's winter outfits into 2017.

I normally look to Camilla and Marc for occasion dressing—when I need an outfit for a special event like a wedding, or when the dress code calls for 'after-five'. But after I recently walked past its store in The Strand, I discovered exactly what my winter work wardrobe was missing—suiting.

On days when I just cannot think of what to wear, but still need to look polished and professional for the office, I'll be reaching for a sleek Camilla and Marc suit. First on my wishlist is the Zelda Suit ($1310), to lighten up my winter wardrobe. The beauty of the suit, is that once you slip it on, you immediately feel polished. I'll be making mine feel more 'me' and less corporate, by layering a lace fishnet top under the blazer and letting it poke out under the sleeves.

I lived in Sydney for most of my 20s, so Australian fashion holds a special place in my heart and a lot of the prime real estate in my wardrobe. Given my well-documented evolution into a more minimal, low-key style, I understand there may be a little surprise from a casual observer that I'm as invested in Aussie brands as I continue to be.

If you haven't been paying careful attention, you might have missed that there's a quieter, moodier side that's slowly but surely beginning to dominate. Australian fashion's aesthetic has taken a turn from the typically sunny demeanor with which it once was synonymous that's rooted in swimwear and colorful resort collections. These buzzy designers are doing all sorts of good things with neutrals (not exclusively but consistently), offering pieces very much at one with the quiet luxury energy that's dominating style globally. There are more, but here are eight Australian brands you should know. They definitely know how to do effortless basics, and most importantly, you can shop them from the U.S.

Anna Quan

I first stumbled across Anna Quan when I shot a story featuring up-and-coming designers at Australian Fashion Week in 2016. Even back then, designer and ex-lawyer Anna Huong described her collection to me as "tailored, minimalist, and discerning," and her elevated staples have only become more and more essential.

Beare Park

Only a few years old, Beare Park is one of the newer brands on the scene but already very much at home among the world's best fashion at the likes of Net-a-Porter and Moda Operandi. Creative Director Bella Pereira is another one who turned away from a corporate career to launch her label, and I'm very glad she did.

Camilla and Marc

Brother-and-sister duo Camilla Freeman-Topper and Marc Freeman have treated Australia to 20 years of forward fashion and particularly great tailoring. Both their current collections and the very chic new Woollahra store are the epitome of minimalist luxe.

Christopher Esber

If you paid even a smidge of attention to the cutout trend of the past few summers, then you know Christopher Esber. There have been strategic splices of skin ever since he debuted at Australian Fashion Week in 2010. The sheer dress in that collection was truly the sign of many good things to come, from a slew of celebrity fans—including Zendaya and Hailey Bieber—to Carmen Kass starring in his recent resort campaign to the brand's on-schedule October show in Paris.

Matteau

Sisters Ilona Hamer and Peta Heinsen of Matteau went from cult-favorite swimwear brand to full-blown fashion label after dabbling in a ready-to-wear capsule for Net-a-Porter back in 2018. Their floral maxi dresses will likely be a moment at every wedding and barbecue in Australia until the end of time, but their effortless tailoring is really where it's at.

SIR

To be clear, SIR probably does cool color and modern summer prints better than anyone. But founders Nikki Campbell and Sophie Coote are seemingly offering increasing doses of elevated neutrals, from suiting to silky dresses, that are far from boring.

St. Agni

Lara and Matt Fells run St. Agni out of the once hippy, now somewhat bougie surf town of Byron Bay. It's a dreamy place that's delightfully at odds (at least in my mind) with the chic, moody vibe of their intensely minimal brand. The apparel is impeccable, but the accessories are where they really hit their stride.

Zimmermann

Since its inception in the early '90s, there's maybe been no Australian brand more synonymous with upbeat summer frills and paisley pastels than Zimmermann, but co-founder sisters Simone and Nicky Zimmermann sure know their way around some tailoring. Their gently retro take on winter classics, from heritage-print overcoats to Fair Isle knits, is a whole different speed to the collections you imagine hanging in their Saint-Tropez store, but they're very at home this winter in New York. 

Hello, my name is Jade and I am the proud owner of a pregnant body. Over the past five months, I've learned that maternity dressing for events is hard, but not impossible. We’re not sure if you’ve noticed, but Gigi Hadid has been pretty quiet lately. It feels like forever ago that we last saw her street style snapped (she’s been on holidays and prepping for her Tommy Hilfiger fashion week show), but that all changed today when she was spotted in NYC (on her way to a Yeezy Season 4 casting ahead of New York Fashion Week), in a perfect spring-ready look.

Gigi wore a pair of denim shorts, with a camel leather jacket, plain white tee, and printed slides. But it was the way she wore her T-shirt that gave the outfit an interesting edge. Gigi took a pair of scissors to her tee, snipped the neckline (to turn it into a V-neck), and then tied the bottom into a knot to create a crop top. When was the last time you treated yourself? Or at least made a guilt-free purchase that you didn’t feel funny about the second you put your credit card away. For a long time, I balked at a price tag that entered the four digits—that is, until I met my dream coat. Enter: A Burberry trench. This wasn’t the type of purchase that happened on the fly. It was carefully thought out, curated, and I made sure I could wear it with at least 847 different outfits before I made the investment. I summed up my thoughts into three points.

1) It’s waterproof

I live in Sydney, and as any Sydneysider knows, the weather is temperamental. One minute it’s sunny, the next there’s an ominous rain cloud in the distance. I no longer have to worry about ruining a leather jacket. Now, I keep my Burberry trench on hand at all times and throw it over whatever I’m wearing. This lightweight trench is easy to roll up and doesn’t take up too much room—so it’s perfect to carry on the move or when you’re travelling.

2) It’s versatile

If your social calendar is more up and down than a ride at Disneyland, a classic trench is all you need to have on hand. Hear me out. You can wear it to work (no matter what your profession, a trench always looks elevated), you can wear it on a quick supermarket dash for more Ben & Jerrys (throw it over your pyjamas—no-one will know), or wear it over your fanciest outfit for an after-dark dinner date. So. Many. Options.

3) You’ll always feel special in it

As much as fashion is about how you feel in what you’re wearing, it’s always nice to receive compliments about your look. A sleek trench coat will never go unnoticed, and you’re guaranteed to always look chic and put-together.

Until last winter, I was terrified of leather leggings. In a store, nothing would make me panic more than the shop assistant suggesting a pair of leather leggings to go with the chunky knit I was waiting to try on. The fear wasn’t down to body confidence—I wear skinny leg jeans all the time and they’re basically the same. It was more I thought they were too ‘out there’ for my simple, non-fussy taste (plus, I couldn’t get the visual of Ross Gellar’s run-in with leather pants in Friends out of my head). 

All of that changed last year when I spontaneously bought this J Brand pair on a late night shopping scroll. Yes, online. Without trying them on. I figured it was simple, I’m in jeans every day, I know what size I am (usually), so I may as well bite the bullet and see if I can pull them off—in the comfort of trying them on in my own home. The result was better than I could’ve hoped. The leather leggings swiftly became my go-to on nights out (and even the office with a long-line tunic thrown over the top), and were comfortable enough to lounge around in all weekend.

My styling tip? Wear them the same way you’d style your jeans. With sneakers, heels, boots—they always look effortless in a Kate Moss kind of way.

After a quick chat before the David Jones A/W 16 fashion launch, we had to ask when her style started to evolve. The Australian model is candid and refreshing when reflecting on the past and talking about when she really started to get into her fashion groove.

Who What Wear Australia: How has your personal style evolved?

Jesinta Campbell: It’s evolved so much! I wish everything prior to 2015 could be erased!

WWW: What happened in 2015?

JC: I got an allowance at David Jones [laughs]! No, I think what happens is, as you get older, you get more comfortable in your own skin—you know what works and what doesn’t work and you don’t get so caught up in trends. You get to know your body better and know what suits you. If what you’re wearing is forced, it doesn’t look good. That’s what I go by. If I put something on and I feel comfortable, then I know it’s going to look good.

WWW: What has been your game-changing fashion moment?

JC: I feel like I really started to get into my groove this exact time last year, A/W 15. I wore a blue Dion Lee dress and I feel like after that, I started making good fashion decisions.

WWW: If you only make one splurge for autumn, what should it be?

JC: A long coat. There’s an amazing floor length Camilla and Marc coat with gold buttons that I'd buy. Gigi Hadid and Kendall Jenner keep wearing them and it’s such a cool look. 

WWW: Who are your favourite Australian designers?

JC: At the moment (and by the way this is so hard, I’m only going to pick three), Camilla and Marc’s A/W 16 collection is next level and I’m obsessed. I love Christopher Esber too, and Bec & Bridge for everyday wear. I have a cute cut-out red dress and it has little gold stars all over it. It’s quite short, but I can wear it with tan strappy sandals, thigh-high boots, or biker boots. That’s three outfits right there with one dress!

WWW: What will you be wearing on Valentine’s Day?

JC: Oh! Um... I don’t know, lingerie? [Laughs] I’ll just go out to dinner and I’ll probably wear my black Ellery flares and an off-the-shoulder top.
