Aurora James can officially add "author" to her résumé. But her list of accomplishments is already beyond impressive. She's the founder and creative director of luxury accessory brand Brother Vellies and the founder of Fifteen Percent Pledge, a nonprofit advocacy organization working to make the global economy a more equitable place for historically excluded groups.

James is now making her literary debut with Wildflower: A Memoir and is ready to share her story with the world. "I don't think that you can understand how a girl from Mississauga, Ontario, Canada, feels compelled to go onto Instagram, post something, make a nonprofit, and do all of these things unless you understand the backstory and the things that have happened in my life," James says.

In the latest episode of Who What Wear With Hillary Kerr, James shares her writing process, the brands everyone should know, and more. For excerpts from their conversation, scroll below, and tune in to hear it all. 

How does it feel to be so close to having this incredible book, Wildflower, out in the world? Tell me a little bit about the writing process. The ups, the downs. What you expected and what you didn't expect.

I thought it was going to be fast, and I thought we were really just going to focus on the [Fifteen Percent] Pledge and the idea of launching this racial justice organization and how we can all use our voices and use our platforms.

In the same way that the idea of the Fifteen Percent Pledge seems easy for people [to understand], it's like, "Okay, 15 percent of your shelf space goes into black-owned businesses. Got it? [You're] buying more black product. Period." It's not that simple. You have to start digging into the, "Well, why was it so much lower before? Where are these businesses? How do my consumers feel?" That really paralleled my process with this book because I don't think that you can understand how a girl from Mississauga, Ontario, Canada, feels compelled to go onto Instagram, post something, make a nonprofit, and do all of these things unless you understand the backstory and the things that have happened in my life, and the way I chose to metabolize those things.

Bad things happen to all of us. Full stop. I think it's about our metabolic process that can allow it to either be the wind beneath our wings or the wind that's holding us back.

You talk about the history of your parents and a lot about your mother. You talk about the 15 Percent Pledge. I'm wondering how you thought about the flow as you went along and if it changed at all as you wrote.

Yeah, it changed a lot. In the beginning, it started out with the Pledge. It started out in the present day, and then I wanted to go back to my childhood. But then I realized I was feeling like I had to start with the Pledge to make it relevant at all. 

When I started writing about my childhood, I realized this isn't just my childhood. It's so many of our childhoods, actually. I don't need the KPIs that have netted out in my adulthood to validate my childhood experience and the complexities that were there.

I think for me, the anger needed to be understood, as well, because I've had these moments where I've been really angry—and I'm not an angry person. But it was super valid. I was so angry at my mom for years, and I was so angry at society for feeling like they were just writing off women. Even with fashion. It's like, "Oh, what are these girls doing over there with their polka dots or whatever." It's kind of like f-you.

We have real businesses. We're doing real things. We have a big impact on the economy. We have a big community amongst each other. We can actually affect change and do something. You don't have to be this man sitting here telling us what we can or can't do, how you want us to be, or how we need to be submissive to you.

I just can't hold anger for very long. I have to find a way to channel it. The book hopefully pinpoints out to people some of the ways in which I chose to channel my anger and let it go. Carrying this baggage around with you is a heavy load. You've got to stop and open it sometimes. I'm not saying you have to abandon all the luggage—because I truly don't believe that's possible—but if we're carrying something, we have the right to know what we are carrying, and some of it we may want to leave behind at different points to lighten the load for ourselves.

There have been so many brands and designers that I have learned from you or that have pinged on my consciousness in a different way. In terms of looking at the fashion industry, are there any designers or trends you're really loving now or names we all should know?

I'm working this week with someone named Kenneth Nicholson, who went through the [Council of Fashion Designers of America] CFDA/Vogue Fashion Fund. He's really, really talented. We're working on a dress together right now, which I'm really excited about.

In the bridal space, there's a brand called Wiederhoeft, and they used to work for Thom Browne. I'm obsessed with that brand. It's so cool.

I mean, Christopher John Rogers, of course. I always love [his work]. Everyone is obsessed. All the color-blocking, the stripes.

Color is such a big part of what can pick us up in the middle of the day, and fashion is such a powerful tool. It also changes just so much about how we feel.

I write a lot in the book about my own experiences with my body, how I feel about myself, and all of that. I think the fashion industry plays a big role in that. Whether we want to acknowledge it or not, it clearly does. It does so much in terms of telling women what is valued these days—and telling men, by the way. That all is very dangerous, too. So what kind of responsibility do we as designers hold? That's where it gets complicated.

Launched in 2020, the Fifteen Percent Pledge envisioned a new future for retail: 15% of shelf space dedicated to Black-owned businesses and entrepreneurs. The percentage (which represents the demographic of Black people in the United States) seems minute at first glance, but in a climate where Black brands are historically looked over, the ask was radical. The idea for the pledge came to Brother Vellies Creative Director Aurora James following the murder of George Floyd as a way for companies to take actionable steps toward racial equity. In the span of a few years, the nonprofit organization has partnered with over 28 retailers, including Nordstrom, Macy's, and Sephora, funneling $10 billion in revenue toward Black-owned businesses in the process.

As the next phase of Fifteen Percent Pledge's vision, the nonprofit has partnered with Moda Operandi to spotlight Black designers making waves in fashion right now. The eight selected brands are featured in a special trunk show, where designs from each are available for pre-order for a limited time. Specially curated by James herself along with Moda Operandi's merchandising team, the roster of names includes buzzy emerging labels Head of State, Agbobly, and Sukeina—all of which were 2022 CFDA Fashion Fund Finalists—as well as AnOnlyChild and Dur Doux. Rounding out the ready-to-wear offerings in the show are Sunni Sunni, a unisex footwear line founded by designer Sunni Dixon, fine jeweler Lauren Godfrey's Harwell Godfrey, and James's own Brother Vellies. "I know firsthand the systemic barriers that Black business owners face in trying to increase their exposure to the larger retail market," says James. "Collaborations like these are not only crucial for building brand visibility but are an important step to push the industry forward by challenging how corporations approach supporting Black businesses long-term. Our partnership with Moda Operandi is rooted in the mutual desire to create a sustainable ecosystem for Black entrepreneurs, all while showcasing their incredible products and designs along the way." Bringing more talent to the forefront is definitely a step in the right direction toward greater racial equity in fashion.

Head of State

It's been an eventful year for emerging brand Head of State. It became a 2022 CFDA Fashion Fund Finalist and helped close out New York Fashion Week this year with a packed, much-talked-about show. The brainchild of Taofeek Abijako, Head of State continually draws influences from Abijako's upbringing in Nigeria as well as his experiences as an activist. While Abijako has been a staple of the menswear circuit since 2018, recent focus has shifted toward his talent for modern and elegant eveningwear—as seen on Evan Mock at last year's Met Gala.

AnOnlyChild

When Public School hit the New York fashion scene with its utilitarian-meets-streetwear designs over a decade ago, the label instantly became an industry darling. Following the brand's success, designers Maxwell Osborne and Dao-Yi Chow were appointed as creative directors of DKNY—a crowning achievement for fresh faces in the business. But after growing pains, a shaky reboot, and the strains of the pandemic, Osborne shifted his focus to establishing his own project. Going solo, Osborne created AnOnlyChild in 2020, showcasing his first full collection in 2021. There are plenty of links to Osborne's Jamaican heritage within the collection, like old-school floral prints and silk separates made to look like classic mesh shirts in Rastafarian colors. 

Dur Doux

A look at Dur Doux's most recent collection is like a boost of vitamin C for the eyes. Founded by mother-daughter team Cynthia and Najla Burt, Dur Doux is exactly what you'd want to pack for a five-star tropical vacation. Think floral-printed separates and vibrant evening dresses in juicy citrus shades.

Brother Vellies

While most luxury shoe brands use "made in Italy" as their big selling point, Brother Vellies does things differently. Brother Vellies employs local artisans from around the world, with much focus on supporting local craftsmanship in Kenya. Since its founding in 2013, the accessory label has turned into a fashion-person favorite with statement boots and heels that instantly catch the eye.

Agbobly

You know a Jacques Agbobly knit when you see it: vivid threads of yarn in cheerful knit arrangements usually finished with some type of cool beading. Agbobly is only 25 years old, but the Parsons alum is already a CFDA Fashion Fund Finalist and has captured the attention of the industry's most seasoned editors. With each new collection, the designer infuses elements of his upbringing in Togo along with the traditions of West African culture.

Sukeina

Power colors and power silhouettes are what define Sukeina. Known for his elaborate, origami-like folds, Creative Director Omar Salam constantly challenges the idea of romance with exact shapes and hard edges. The result is striking and sophisticated pieces that take up space and send a message.

Sunni Sunni

Sunni Sunni might as well be Hollywood's best-kept secret. Its signature square-toe boots have graced the feet of everyone from Burna Boy and Usher to Diddy and Yahya Abdul-Mateen II. Despite Sunni Sunni's clientele heavily skewing male, founder Sunni Dixon designs with all genders in mind. The utilitarian boots can help pull together a pair of high-waist jeans and a sweater as effortlessly as a breezy maxi dress. 

Harwell Godfrey

Everything has meaning for jeweler Lauren Godfrey—right down to the type of stone and its arrangement. Godfrey is the woman behind Harwell Godfrey, a line of fine jewelry inspired by the African diaspora. Each precious stone is a beacon for healing as well as a pretty accessory. Godfrey weaves together ancient rituals and spiritual affirmations within her pieces for a unique feel-good approach.

There’s an old adage around gifts that states, "It’s the thought that counts,” and I’d argue it’s both true and false. To own a brand in 2020 goes beyond just selling a product—you have to sell a purpose. Consumers are now synergistically aligning themselves with brands that share the same core values and are purchasing with mindfulness, from ethically-sourced materials to charitable donations, to ultimately contribute to a greater good. At the forefront of this movement is the beloved founder of sustainable luxury accessory brand Brother Vellies, Aurora James. As a brand built on supporting global artisan communities who hand-make each unique design, James is changing the definition of a luxury item. "What does luxury mean to me as a woman right now in 2020? Luxury is a brand that is founded by a woman, funded by a woman, and made by women,” states James. Brother Vellies’ shoes and handbags have become a symbol of luxury through integrity and solidarity that honor cultural histories. 

As this year unfolded, becoming increasingly devastating—in more ways than one—James found herself at a pivotal moment: how to support her artisan communities who need it the most during a global pandemic, and her cash-strapped customers who she wouldn’t dare push to purchase a $500 pair of boots. Thus, James came up with a genius solve by launching the subscription Something Special, furthering her ability to support local artisan economies around the world through made-to-order comfort items. But that’s far from all—in June, James also started the 15% Pledge, a nonprofit organization pushing for racial and economic equality by urging companies to commit 15% of their shelf space to Black-owned businesses. With partners like Sephora, Yelp, and West Elm already onboard, James is changing the landscape of the American economy—one that has underserved minorities for far too long.

Unless you live outside of the United States or off-the-grid, it should come as no surprise that the next presidential election is at the forefront of the minds of millions of Americans. And while some may gaff at the idea of a fashion site getting into politics, the truth of the matter is that fashion is political—it always has been. 

On a larger-scale, the fast-fashion industry is one of the biggest contributors to climate change. Historically, fashion has played a role in every civil rights movement, including the Women’s suffrage movement. And on an individual level, it impacts how transgender and disabled, and every other marginalized community member approaches personal style. Don’t get me wrong here, fashion is fun; but to deny how it impacts every part of society is naive. As the industry has reckoned with its complicity towards racism and ecological impact; it’s time it also assesses and redefines its role in standing up for its consumers’ beliefs through politics. 

Of course, in many ways, the fashion industry has already stepped up to this moment with the boom of voting merch. From Christian Siriano’s spring 2021 runway show with looks splashed in the word "Vote” to Stuart Weitzman’s 5050 vote boots, there are so many chic ways that voting has been stitched into the current cultural conversation. But the question remains: How can we know if a fashion brand isn’t just hopping on creating voter merch to profit from off conscious consumers?

In search of that answer, we spoke with four designers in which activism is baked into their brand ethos on why they decided to design merchandise to promote voting. Ahead, you’ll see why it’s more important than ever for the fashion industry not only to take a stand. Sure, a t-shirt won't solve everything, but encouraging consumers to shop and vote according to their values come November 3, and every election day to come is a start.

Aurora James, Founder & Creative Director of Brother Vellies; Founder, Fifteen Percent Pledge

What inspired you to create merchandise for Brother Vellies to help get out the vote in 2020?

AJ: I stand by Joe Biden and Kamala Harris. I believe they will restore and unite the soul of our nation. These items are an offering, a blend of our collective hope, passion, and belief in a world that can look a lot brighter than it is today; this sweatshirts, sneakers, and socks from Brother Vellies is one small way I can energize people to get out there and vote for this ticket.

Why do you think it’s crucial for your brand to promote voting this year through clothing?

AJ: This is a crucial year; there’s so much at stake. I don't think it's vital that it be promoted through fashion, but it's one way that I know I can help raise awareness and funds for important causes.

There’s a common misconception that fashion isn’t political—do you agree or disagree? And why?

 AJ: Fashion has never not been political. From women beginning to wear pants and flat shoes to burning their bras to Michelle Obama committing to wearing so many American designers, fashion has always had a voice. I am lucky to have a very engaged community, and I think with that opportunity, it would be irresponsible for me not to speak out about my beliefs. I have chosen to align my brand with specific values, and that alone can be political.

What duty do you feel the fashion industry has to address what’s happening in politics and the world?

AJ: I wouldn't tell others what to do, but many of us have a strong voice and dedicated communities ready to listen to what we say. Why not use that voice to encourage voting? 

We’ve seen many brands jump on the voting merch bandwagon; how do you think we can ensure that these collections have long-term positive implications?

AJ: The exciting thing is that voting is always important, not just during the Presidential elections. Voting is a luxury, a luxury that is unfortunately not accessible to everyone. We should all exercise the right to vote during the mid-terms and local elections as well

When it comes to the future of fashion, do you think consumers will care more and more about conscious fashion?

AJ: I think these times we're living in have influenced how people spend their money now. It is no longer business as usual. Consumers are giving real thought to how they use their purchasing power, and they want to spend money with companies who are thinking about more than the bottom line. As an industry, I hope that we continue to evaluate what business as usual looks like and start thinking more about our supply chain, how we are treating the people we work with, and what imagery we are putting out there to inspire people to shop. Many of what we have seen in the past are images that inadvertently make people feel less than, and I think we should try to focus instead on uplifting our community to feel like the best versions of themselves. That is what meaningful change looks like.

Alexandra Waldman, Co-Founder, Creative Director, Universal Standard

What inspired you to create merchandise to help get out the vote in 2020 for Universal Standard? 

As a brand built upon access and inclusivity, we feel compelled to use our platform to contribute to the conversation around voting and support efforts to expand access to the ballot box. It’s a way for all voices to be heard and counted. It’s also a way for us to enact change and be active in constructing our future. Since we are a fashion brand, it made sense to include our "ALL OF US. AS WE ARE” tag line to create the Vote With US capsule collection.  

Why do you think it’s crucial your brand promotes voting this year through clothing? 

As a mission-driven brand, we have an opportunity to use our platform to encourage voting and focus attention on this historic election. Voting is essential for all of us and is the ultimate expression of inclusion. The same goes for your clothing choices and style. As a company that strongly believes in inclusivity, this choice was obvious for us.  

What duty do you feel the fashion industry has to address what’s happening in politics and the world? 

Fashion is a language, a voice, and often - a declaration of belief. A fashion brand has access to multitudes through multiple platforms. Few brands these days are fiddling while Rome burns. Whether it’s pressing national politics, the environment, labor practices, gender politics, access, or the fundamental physical safety of those working in the industry, it is unconscionable not to have a perspective and a roadmap to improvement.

There’s a common misconception that fashion isn’t political—do you agree or disagree? And why? 

Of course, fashion is political! It is both a force and a reflection of the times and the changes happening in the world. Think of the miniskirt, punk rock, the preppy era; all reflect changing socio-political tides and have a direct connection to shifting norms, acceptances, and forms of protest. At the moment, all you have to do is look at the number of brands producing campaigns and products to raise awareness and funds around voting. It is quite literally clothing manifesting a political conscience.

Why should people in fashion care about politics? How are they related in your eyes? 

The relationship could not be more fundamental. ‘People in fashion’ are people first and foremost. It isn’t possible to be a citizen of the world in our time and not care about the changes in politics affect. To share information locally, nationally, and globally to promote our planet’s health and the dignity and rights of all of us is not just the responsibility of our industry but an enormous privilege.

In what ways have you seen personal style and political statements intersect over the past few years? 

Everything is political, and at the very least, we all participate by voting with our wallets. What you wear and who you buy from has a political impact and actual bearing on social change. 

We’ve seen many brands jump on the voting merch bandwagon; how do you think we can ensure that these collections have long-term positive implications? 

This is about being heard— about adding to the voice for change. Regardless of who ends up in an office, our work ensures size equality, access, diversity, and representation continues. As you rightly pointed out, one timely collection rarely does anything to move the needle. We are continually working on projects with partners who see things as we do. We are always thinking of ways to break barriers, unite the divided, and give back to our community. 

Suzanne Lerner, Co-founder, and President of Michael Stars

What inspired you to create merchandise to help get out the vote in 2020 for Michael Stars? 

SL: Michael Stars has always been a purpose-driven brand. Through our foundation, we’ve consistently supported causes and organizations that work towards bettering society and amplifying women & girls’ voices. Voting has always been at the forefront for us. We made voting tees and baby onesies back in 2018 for the midterms and this year we were so excited to partner with Gloria Steinem for the #TheTeeInVote capsule. 

Why do you think it’s crucial your brand promotes voting this year through clothing? 

SL: Clothing is a way to wear your values and by marketing the importance of voting through the #TheTeeInVote campaign with Gloria, we were able to support and help amplify the work of three incredible, women-led organizations: Black Voters Matter, Voto Latino, and March On. 

There’s a common misconception that fashion isn’t political—do you agree or disagree? And why? 

SL: Disagree! The reality is that fashion is an expression and symbol of our beliefs and passions. It’s at the heart of every major social movement and can send a strong visual message instantly—like a group of congresswomen wearing Suffragette white at the State of the Union this year to draw attention to gender equality, or the invasion of the pink pussy hats in Washington, DC during the Women's March.

What duty do you feel the fashion industry has to address what’s happening in politics and the world? 

SL: Our industry can lead the way toward gender and racial equality. Only 14% of fashion brands are run by women. That has to change. But, our duty also extends beyond that. Fashion is not just about what the consumer buys and wears. It's about the complex process involved in producing our collection from design until production. As an intersectional company that employs over 80% of women, we have always been committed to producing in our hometown of Los Angeles, providing workers living wages, health insurance, and more.

Why should people in fashion care about politics? How are they related in your eyes? 

SL: Political and social issues are intertwined with the fashion industry. On the business side, there are issues like import/export duties and tariffs or fair wages and safe working environments. On the consumer side, you may find that your brand is being adopted or co-opted as a symbol for a movement or idea. Because inevitably, every company will land in the middle of a political battle whether they want to or not. That's why we have been very clear about what Michael Stars stands for. 

We’ve seen many brands jump on the voting merch bandwagon. How do you think we can ensure that these collections have long-term positive implications? 

SL: Actually, none of this is really about merch. It's about committing to being part of positive change. And it's not a sprint, it's a marathon—one that we've been involved in since the start of the company. We've got more motivation than ever to keep up the movement towards racial and gender equality and are hard at work on next year's strategy.

In what ways have you seen personal style and political statements intersect over the past few years? 

SL: I don't think a movement can be recognized and become widely known as a movement without fashion. In 2018, there was #MeToo movement which was embraced on Oscar’s red carpet. Last year, we had thousands of women—and men too!—who supported our "Feminism is for Everybody" tee that amplified the fight for the Equal Rights Amendment.

Meredith Melling, Co-Founder of La Ligne

What inspired you to create merchandise to help get out the vote in 2020 for La Ligne?

MM: We launched La Ligne in the spring leading up to the 2016 presidential election. As a brand-new brand, we were hesitant to take a stand politically before really getting to know our customers first. But as three female founders who felt very passionately about the election and what was at stake, we decided that La Ligne was a natural extension of us, and we had to get involved. So, we created our limited edition Je Suis Avec Elle tee, which was the first of many politically and philanthropically motivated La Ligne products.

We are days away from one of the most critical elections of our lifetime, so we once again decided to get involved. We teamed up with a friend of the brand and La Bande member, Cleo Wade, to create VOTE masks and T-shirts and donated 100% sales to Fair Fight. A few weeks later, we launched our Je Suis Voter sweater, a nod to our 2016 style, and contributed 30% of sales to I am a Voter.

Why do you think it’s crucial your brand promotes voting this year through clothing?

MM: We cannot message enough about the importance of voting, whether on our products or our website. What duty do you feel the fashion industry has to address what’s happening in politics and the world?

MM: I think the fashion industry has influence and reach, and I applaud the brands, content creators, and influencers who use their platforms to call attention to what is happening in politics and around the world.

In what ways have you seen personal style and political statements intersect over the past few years?

MM: I think people are more comfortable sharing their political beliefs, so whether that's at the dinner table, over social media, or on a T-shirt, people are more forthright.

We’ve seen many brands jump on the voting merch bandwagon. How do you think we can ensure that these collections have long-term positive implications?

MM: When it comes to voting merch, not only is it essential to get the message out, but it’s equally as important to support organizations that are dedicated to protecting voter rights. With our voting initiatives, we donated proceeds from the sales to Fair Fight, and then I am a Voter and believe this is one of the best ways to have a long-term impact.

Can you remember what you wore the first time you voted? And even if you’re voting by mail, will you have an election-day ensemble this year?

MM: This year, I registered to be an election day poll worker, so I'll be wearing comfortable shoes (it's a long day! 5 AM - 9 PM) and my Cleo Wade x La Ligne Vote mask.

When it comes to the future of fashion, do you think consumers will care more and more about conscious fashion?

MM:  We saw such an incredible consumer response to our voting merch upon launch. Both the Cleo Wade mask and tee and the Je Suis Voter sweater sold out quickly, indicating an ongoing appetite for fashion that makes a difference through its message as well as its charitable component.

Are there any specific politicians you think are using their fashion or beauty choices to communicate their beliefs thoughtfully?

MM: I certainly loved seeing the sea of white suits and dresses worn by the Democratic women of Congress at President Donald Trump's 2019 State of the Union address.

It’s no secret that I’m a fan of the designer behind Brother Vellies, but I’m not the only one. Even Beyoncé and Solange Knowles are fans. And honestly, who wouldn’t be a fan of Aurora James? Through her work, she’s championing sustainable and ethical fashion. Each piece she designs is handmade by artisans in various parts of Africa, and frankly, her thoughtful approach to everything she does is the epitome of black excellence.

Who can forget when Michael B. Jordan wore that Louis Vuitton harness? If you’re not abreast of the woman behind that look, meet Ade Samuel. She’s the stylist behind Hollywood's best dressed stars including Letitia Wright, Big Sean, Idris Elba… Need I say more? But beyond her clientele, her work has been featured in H&M campaigns and on the covers of publications like Essence. Whether it’s a campaign, a client, or her personal approach to style, I assure you, following Samuel’s work will always surprise and delight you.

Lately, it seems as though not a day goes by that I'm not triggered by a blatant form of racial insensitivity, an evident lack of diverse staff, or a lack of awareness of how systemic racism impacts every facet of life. While we're reckoning collectively with police brutality and systemic racism, the fashion industry has had to reflect upon how it needs to make serious changes in the industry. Of course, changes are happening, but for consumers, we can help propel the movement forward by taking a step back and looking at how we contribute.

Sure, we can't control what designers send down the runway. Still, one of the most fundamentally underrated ways to be an ally to the Black community (and any community for that matter) is how we spend our money. While recognizing the contributions that designers like Dapper Dan have been making to the industry is so important, I think there's genuinely no better way to appreciate and support Black artistry than by shopping from Black-owned businesses and designers. Aurora James of Brother Vellies

The first time I found the brand Brother Vellies in my feed, my heart skipped a beat. I saw a woman who looks just like me on social media (a rare occasion) wearing these incredible black feather heels. From that moment on, I was hooked, and for a good reason. Founded by Aurora James, the brand is dedicated to sustainability and works with artisans in South Africa, Ethiopia, Kenya, and Morocco to make its handcrafted shoes.

But the thoughtfulness doesn't stop at the production process; James also founded the Fifteen Percent Pledge. The nonprofit organization has been advocating for our favorite major retailers to commit to including more Black-owned businesses. Basically, whenever I’m feeling philanthropic but need a pair of shoes, I’ll be spending all my money on Brother Vellies. 

LaQuan Smith

Remember that iconic blazer look Beyoncé wore on her last On the Run II tour? That was from Queens-born designer LaQuan Smith. His glamorous and often sultry designs also have caught the attention of Cardi B, Rihanna, Jennifer Lopez, and other celebrities. But can you blame them? Smith has a way of creating the kinds of pieces that both Beyoncé and the rest of the world want to wear when they're feelin' themselves, and that, my friends, is a true talent.

Maximilian Davis of Ferragamo

One of the most anticipated creative director appointments in recent years? Maximilian Davis to Ferragamo. It's rare for a British Trinidadian Jamaican to secure such a lofty position in the industry, much less within only five years of graduating from the London College of Fashion. Nevertheless, Davis made waves with his namesake label because of his sultry take on tailoring, and that unique perspective has informed all of his collections thus far at Ferragamo.

Telfar Clemens

While you may know Telfar Clemens because of his "Bushwick Birkin," aka his iconic shopping totes that sell out in seconds, the truth is Clemens has been pushing societal boundaries by challenging Black and gender identity norms long before his bags became a hot commodity. He's now a CFDA/Vogue Fashion Fund winner who's collaborated with Ugg and Converse for special collections, but Clemens's approach to unisex, affordable designer clothing has long been at the ethos of this brand, making him a designer for all (quite literally). 

Virgil Abloh of Off-White 

Though Abloh passed away in 2021, his legacy lives on. The designer made waves with the luxury street label Off-White and grew his influence further when he stepped into his role as menswear artistic director for Louis Vuitton. Not only did he honor the brands’ identities when designing, but it felt as though both were a reflection of his own experiences as a Black man and the environments that shaped him. To me, that reflection in and of itself is breathtaking. 

Olivier Rousteing of Balmain

Maybe it was just me, but the 2019 Grammy outfits truly solidified my love for Olivier Rousteing at Balmain. How could one not still be in a tizzy over Beyoncé's iconic look, Jorja Smith's stunning gold sequin number, or even Kylie Jenner's avant-garde look? I know he's been the creative director for quite some time (which means I was high-key sleeping on him), but something about the documentary Wonder Boy made me fall in love with him all over again. Maybe it's his couture, perhaps it's his popular bags, or maybe it's just him, but either way, this a brand and a designer to buy into for the long haul. 

Sade Mims of Edas

Some of the best designers of the moment aren't at huge fashion houses; they're doing their own thing. That's the case with Sade Mims of Edas. Founded in 2013 in Brooklyn, the brand was a love letter to jewelry for Mims but has since expanded beyond eclectic jewelry pieces. In fact, the brand's sleek leather bags, beautifully beaded hats, and one-of-a-kind home objects are what has made this designer a favorite among artists and editors alike. Trust when we say Mims's brand is going to be your newest obsession. 

Theresa Ebagua of Chelsea Paris 

As all fashion editors can attest to, a good pair of shoes can make all the difference—and there is no other brand making shoes quite like Chelsea Paris. Founded in 2012 by the Nigerian-born, Los Angeles– and London-based Black footwear designer Theresa Ebagua, Chelsea Paris makes pieces that have been worn by icons such as Beyoncé and Lupita Nyong'o. But if you're wondering why you may not have heard of her brand yet, it's because the designer took a three-year hiatus to reestablish her approach to design and her heritage. When you can come back from a hiatus and still create shoes any editor would swoon over, you know you've got the touch. 

Felisha Noel of Fe Noel

Imagine yourself sitting in Positano, Italy, with the sun shining down on you while you’re drinking lemonade. What are you wearing? Hopefully, Fe Noel. The Grenadian womenswear designer from Brooklyn specialized in collections that practically scream "I wish I could book a flight right now." But beyond that, Noel has been known to collaborate with fellow artists to create pieces that reclaim the beauty of Black identity that’s been erased in larger historical narratives. And what's more beautiful than that? 

Nasrin Jean-Baptiste of Petit Kouraj

We've said it before, and we'll repeat it again: Petit Kouraj is a fashion-person favorite. What exactly makes this brand lovable, though? We'd say the intentionality founder Nasrin Jean-Baptiste put behind her brand. Born in London to Haitian immigrants, Jean-Baptiste's experience within the fashion industry started within the styling realm and eventually led to the founding of her handwoven bag company in 2019. But this isn't just another bag brand; cooked into the DNA of Petit Kouraj is an ethos to give back. Each bag is created with organic cotton, leather, and rayon and is made by a woman-led organization in Haiti that employs local artisans. Talk about wearable art. 

Rebecca Henry and Akua Shabaka of House of Aama

Fashion is all about storytelling—at least that's how the mother-daughter duo behind House of Aama, Rebecca Henry and Akua Shabaka, approach design. Founded in 2015, the brand has become known for how it upcycles vintage and deadstock fabrics to create unique pieces. It's not just the duo's sustainable approach to design that's intriguing but rather how they use historical research and archives to explore and honor the African diaspora in different collections, resulting in pieces that are the physical embodiment of uniqueness. 

Edvin Thompson of Theophilio

No matter the art form, there's a level of alchemy required to meld inspiration from various places, cultures, and ideas to create something completely new. Fashion designer Edvin Thompson has already mastered that with his brand Theophilio. Founded in 2016, the label is, in his own words, "a wearable biography," with nods to his childhood in Jamaica, New York City's progressive culture, and what's happening at the moment. But what makes Thompson's work so special is his unique perspective and how he melds his lived experience with upcycled fabrics to create one-of-a-kind pieces. Maybe it's alchemy, maybe it's magic, or possibly it's just Edvin Thompson. 

Brandon Blackwood

For most fashion houses, it can take decades to attain that "cult status." For the Brooklyn-born designer Brandon Blackwood, it only took seven. Of course, building a following didn't magically happen overnight. The brand was relatively small and only known among the fashion community until the release of the label's viral "End Systemic Racism" tote in 2020. That tiny bag may have catapulted Blackwood into international acclaim, but the designer's continued ability to create buzzy pieces keeps the label ever-relevant. It's expanded its handbag offering and launched an eyewear, footwear, and outerwear line. All of this is to say that this brand will only get bigger from here. 

Christopher John Rogers

For people in the know, it should come as no surprise that designer Christopher John Rogers has taken the industry by storm. Born and raised in Baton Rouge, Louisiana, the designer brings the Southern bigger-than-life essence to all of his colorful designs, and people are noticing. Not only did he receive the CFDA/Vogue Fashion Fund award in 2019, but also his collections since then have cued collective gasps. In many ways, Rogers creates the type of clothing I hope the fashion industry includes more of in the future, which is to say his work crosses boundaries. His creations are so excellent and so unapologetic that they force the world to no longer see the designer for the color of their skin, but rather for the beautiful things in which they choose to create.

As a social media editor, I spend a lot of time on Instagram. I mean a lot of time—so much so that I'm afraid to even look at my iPhone screen time app for fear of shame. But, hey, it is my job, after all. Given the amount of time I spend on the app, it's safe to say I come across more than my fair share of cool looks, pieces, and Instagram shops that have me hitting the save button to add to my personal saved collection.

“I have a couple hundred pairs of shoes,” a claim that most fashion fans dream of one day sharing, is just another part of the life and work of Aurora James. As the founder and creative director of Brother Vellies, James not only has an enviable footwear collection but actually designs many of the shoes herself. Her initial inspiration, she notes, came after traveling through Africa. “I met a lot of artisans along the way and wanted to find a way to keep them employed,” she says, “so I began creating collections that utilized their unique skills.”

Since starting the company in 2013, James has earned the notice of peers, editors, and industry insiders alike. She won the CFDA/Vogue Fashion Fund in 2015 and is currently a member of the CFDA Fashion Incubator, but it still feels like James and Brother Vellies are just getting started, like there’s much more ahead.

As for any woman who owns and runs her own business, James has no defined 9-to-5 schedule, no two days are alike, and there’s a certain unavoidable blurring of personal and work life that occurs. Luckily, James’s sense of style lends itself to a world constantly in flux. “I don’t see a difference between on- and off-duty style,” she says. “I think there is so much about Brother Vellies that I have rooted in my own actual lifestyle that everything sort of blends.”

Of course, it’s impossible to work in the fashion industry without being acutely aware of the way women choose (and want) to dress. For James, this proximity has come to inform both her own way of dressing and her design choices. “I am more interested in personal style than trends and more interested in shoes you will own for a lifetime instead of just one season,” she notes, adding that working in the industry has encouraged her to build her own closet slowly instead of shopping fast fashion. “The best dressed people in the industry,” she says, “are those who are very aware of their own style and build on that.”

There’s a common thread between the way James dresses every day and the shoes and bags she creates for others. When asked to describe her personal style, James offers a response that could easily carry over as a descriptor of the Brother Vellies aesthetic. She views how she dresses as a reflection of how she sees the world: “romantic and whimsical and bold and full of texture and color.” Read on to see James’s weekday wardrobe in full.

“I wear a lot of long dresses with our Unity boots. It’s a bit of a ‘pretty punk’ vibe, I guess. But more so, it’s just comfortable and girly, which is an ongoing theme with a lot of how I dress and design.” While Mondays may qualify as a stressful, uninspired day for many, James uses the start of the week as an opportunity to make a statement. Pairing unexpected pieces like a flowy maxi dress with rough-and-tumble boots starts things off on a fresh foot.

Working in a creative industry has allowed her to build a fairly fluid wardrobe, and her footwear designs reflect the same flexibility. Her boots could just as easily be worn with jeans as they could with a bohemian dress, and other styles follow the same rule. “The Holiday Bow Pump is really great for the office with a linen or navy pinstripe or polka dot dress,” she notes. “On the weekends, though, you could pair it with athletic socks, jeans, and a sweatshirt. I like shoes that have a duality to them like that.”

Winter in New York can leave even the boldest dresser uninspired, but the Toronto native manages to bring texture and a sense of playfulness into her wardrobe even on a practically frigid shoot day. “I have had these plaid McQueen pants for six years,” she notes about her Tuesday outfit. “I love wool pants in the winter; they’re the best way to stay warm. A shearling crossbody is like a little heater also. This is definitely a very winter look.”

James has a unique ability to take her shoes, in this case denim loafers with crystal embellishments, and build an outfit around them that is unexpected but inspired. The key takeaway: Don’t be afraid to mix and match the standout styles you love.

While it’s not uncommon for James to travel for work—“Los Angeles, Paris, Morocco, Italy, and Ethiopia are the typical destinations”—when she’s working in NYC, jeans are in heavy rotation. “You can usually find me in jeans a vintage shirt at least three times a week,” she says.

But James has a knack for knowing how to pair casual and more formal pieces together in a way that feels neither sloppy nor stuffy. “You have to take luxe and pare it down sometimes. If there’s anything close to a uniform in James’s closet, her Thursday look would be it. “This is my basic go-to for years,” she says, “an easy skirt with a statement shoe and bag with some vintage on top.” The addition of more trend-forward accessories, like a leather beret and statement earrings, give even the most worn items an instant refresh.

Notes James, “I always start with the accessories and build from there. What shoes do I want to wear today? If you have great accessories, they will completely transform jeans and a white T-shirt even. The world is your oyster with a Palms Pump and Beret!”

While James notes that athleisure is the one thing she’d never wear while working, some sporty elements have become staples. “My boyfriend works with athletes, so I have this weird habit of integrating gratuitous sportswear into my outfits,” she says. But, despite her ability to easily pull off a jersey, you probably won’t catch her watching a game on the weekends. “I’m that girl on the street that gives a blank, confused look when someone says something like ‘I love the Chicago Bulls’ and I’ve totally forgotten A) what that is and B) that I’m wearing a Chicago Bulls vintage T-shirt.”

While James has already seen success as a businesswoman in the fashion industry, she notes that she’s looking to the future, not her past accomplishments. “I get inspired by thinking about different things women will do and accomplish while wearing Brother Vellies—running for office, being a mom, just kicking butt in general,” she says.
