As if like clockwork, winter’s blistering grip has relinquished and invited in spring’s blissful warmth, resulting in revitalised wardrobes that prioritise lightweight fabrics, ethereal silhouettes and dreamy prints.

This season, however, it appears that the biggest blouse trend of note doesn’t just meet all those requirements, but also delivers that dose of nostalgia we so often seek out, whilst providing an angelic counterpoint to the dependable jeans we tend to spend most of our time in.

First garnering popularity through the 20th Century, they first came to prominence in the ‘40s with Henri Mattise depicting several styles in his work before becoming a fixture in the balmy wardrobes of the European jet set like Jane Birkin in the ‘60s before finally showing up on the runway in Saint Laurent’s landmark “Haute Russian" collection in the ‘70s.

These days, you’re bound to find a peasant top within the work of designers who derive the most inspiration from these eras, from Chemena Kamali’s free-spirited and intrepidly feminine pieces for Chloé or Margaret and Katherine Kleveland’s work for their beloved brand Dôen, which the pair describe as holding a “reverence for coastal California of decades past".

However, when it comes to how they’re styled, not much has really changed. Allowing the fluidity and ease of the style to really shine, most wearers pair their peasant tops with sturdy denim bottoms, particularly light washes in straight-leg cuts. Emulating the spirit of the La Piscine star, they’re commonly complemented with her trademark basket bag, too.

Still, in a season defined by lightness and a renewal, there’s nothing more appealing than embracing a trend that allows a more delicate and tender side to show. It's no secret that fashion is obsessed with the past. Each season, almost every collection is influenced by a previous era, movement or subculture. In recent years, the nostalgic fixation has mainly been with Y2K. What started as something quite divisive—an era said not to flatter anyone, obsessed with "ugly" shoes, garish colours and questionable denim—at first it seemed a miracle that it was coming back, and yet now most of us are wearing styles inspired (or actually from) that era. Let's not forget also the more recent obsession with '90s minimalism, catalysed by Love Story, the glossy TV show that has made Carolyn Bessette Kennedy and her signature understated style the answer to the end of quiet luxury.

Adding to this, back in January online discourse was all about the year 2016, with everyone's 'avo on toast' era content, as well as their outfits, going more viral than it did first time around. We've also witnessed the comeback of Indie Sleaze. First 'a thing' around 2006 and lasting until the early 2010s, it was the era of skinny jeans, American Apparel, 'Nu-Rave', Alexa Chung and the period Kate Moss was never seen without her Napoleon jacket or her rockstar boyfriend, Pete Doherty.

Also around this era, in fact just before, was the prime time for boho-chic. A trend influenced by the '70s, it was pioneered in the early 2000s by It girls like Sienna Miller and the Olsen twins with long tousled blonde hair, wearing gladiator sandals and folky cotton tops with bleach-wash denim shorts. In 2025-26, boho has enjoyed a return, particularly down to Chemena Kamali, the creative director of Chloe, who is dedicated to taking the brand back to its original French Girl free-spirited DNA, one ruffled sheer blouse and clog at a time.

The point being, that in the last few seasons—months, really—we've experienced the return of multiple trends influenced by just the last few decades alone. Don't even get me started on the lore of the spring/summer 2026 runway trends and how they were inspired by '80s maximalism, '60s housewives as well as '50s lady-like sense of dress.

But having researched the spring/summer 2026 and autumn/winter 2026 runways at length lately, I've come to realise that fashion is seeking inspiration from eras much, much longer ago than the '90s. From Rococo-inspired florals at Max Mara and Simone Rocha, to Napoleon jackets, pirate boots and tricorn hats that ooze Baroque-cool, designers are harking back way beyond 1950. Whilst Chanel and Rabanne showcased a series of drop-waists that fundamentally felt quite 1920s flapper girl, Dior, Alexander McQueen, Keburia and Ann Demeulemeester alluded to pre 18th century periods and cultural movements.

Here, I've researched all the runways have the offer, and have collated the 5 periods pre-1950 I think they've been most inspired by.

5 Nostalgia Fashion Trends to Know In Spring 2026

1. Roaring Twenties

Style Notes: For Chanel and Rabanne's A/W26 collections, drop waists were a key focus. Wide shift dresses with thick vest-like silhouettes were an integral detail to each collection, which are a clear nod to the 1920's flapper girl style. But it wasn't just silhouettes but general 'more is more' details. Beaded fringe! Frothy brooches! Sequinned pouch bags! Opera gloves! Even Chanel had the classic T-bar court shoes. This sense of joy, colour and exuberance feels much like the prohibition 'Roaring Twenties' era, so make Daisy Buchanan your new style muse.

2. Rococo Romance

Style Notes: The Rococo era occurred in mid-late 18th century France. Stylistically similar but almost a result of the Baroque period, Rococo was known for its pastel hues, ruffled details, ribbons and frothy textures. The most famous depiction of this period must be Sofia Coppola's film Marie Antoinette, which wonderfully depicted the essence and beauty of the period. Dior's AW/26 collection gave this same sense of hyper-femininity, offering tiers and tiers of tulle frothy short skirts, with pastel feather prints as well as feather hemlines. It was the same at coquette-girl favourite, Simone Rocha, with pastels, sheer floral fabrics and embroidered floral motifs for S/S26. Even the designer's collaboration with adidas in her latter AW/26 collection, she presented a white bowler bag with bow motifs stitched on the front. And you just know if Marie Antoinette was a Parisian Gen-Z influencer today, she would 100% have that bag.

3. Gothic Victorian

Style Notes: Gothic Victorian influences have been bubbling up for some seasons. Not just in fashion but in TV and film we've seen countless depictions of the mid-late 19th century recently. Nosferatu, Frankenstein and, of course, Wuthering Heights have been the topic of much conversation within the zeitgeist, and as such, Victorian fashion has been everywhere. I've already talked at length about witchy boots, which looking at Prada AW/26, will be going nowhere next season. Adding to the 'lace-up' detail; corsetry is having a moment. Dilara Findikoglu has long pioneered the Victorian aesthetic, including corsetry and bodices, but her S/S26 show was particularly dark and macabre. Other depictions occurred at Yuhan Wang, Bora Aksu and Chloe, with high necklines, lace and broderie anglaise.

4. Baroque

Style Notes: After S/S26 fashion month, it felt like a sure bet piratecore was on the agenda for 2026. Dior's tricorn hats and capes, Ann Demeulemeester pirate boots and Napoleon jackets at Keburia, Alexander McQueen and Sinead Gorey all echoed inspirations from the Golden Age of Piracy, which occurred in Europe around 1650-the early 1700s. These maritime and Baroque influences are rooted in elegant grandeur—think dark velvets coats and vests, heavily embellished with golden frogging and epaulettes that are unmistakably military-coded. Whilst some depictions of this for SS/26 and A/W26 feel almost ironic (see Keburia and Sinead Gorey), nobody can deny how much these design codes influenced the '80s New Romantic movement and peak Indie Sleaze era, which a real cornerstones of British fashion. Just think—what would Carl Barât and Pete Doherty have been without their Napoleon jackets and eyeliner?

5. Renaissance Revival

Style Notes: Whilst the renaissance period is a far greater stretch of history, spanning loosely from the 14th-17th century, beginning in Italy and then making its way across Europe, it was one of (if not the) the most monumental cultural movements in history. Seeing the progression of art, philosophy, literature and science, it also bled into fashion, progressing the more practical, draped and modest styles of the Middle Ages to something more ornate and fanciful. In Britain, the Elizabethan and Tudor periods were at the core of this, and we can draw connections from the opulence of fashion of then to now. Ruffle neck collars, voluminous 'puff ball' skirts and shorts worn with tights, highly embroidered and brocaded expensive fabrics like velvet and silk were seen not just in Shakespearean times, but also at Keburia, McQueen, Khaite and Mithridate this season.

Whilst there were once strict parameters surrounding what could be described as la bohème—quite artistic, often Parisian and certainly consciously uncoupled from society's conventions—today’s sartorial landscape has enabled anyone wearing a pair of fringed boots or suede bag to invest in the bohemian fashion trend.

Indeed, the beauty of the boho chic aesthetic lies in the vintage quality inherent to it, with staples like frilly linens and hobo bags almost ageless in the sense they could be dated to a number of decades. The wooden clogs and leather capes worn by the likes of Sienna Miller could easily be from the 1970s or the 17th-century, but are most likely from Chemena Kamali’s recent collections for Chloé. The floaty tiered dress styled by Daisy Edgar-Jones might look like something she’s fished out of an archival boutique along Portobello Road, but it is actually from Saint Laurent’s recent Resort ‘25 collection.

Part of the appeal of the bohemian fashion trend lies in its laissez-faire and care-free attitude. It conjures images of Doechii walking barefoot through the streets of the 16th arrondissement or Florence & The Machine’s whimsical performance style with her wild tresses and layers of lace. This calming and ethereal essence innate to the style is certainly why so many designers have mined it, with brands like Zimmermann, Isabel Marant and Doên making this laid-back sensibility a cornerstone of their brand identities.

However, in 2026, the bohemian fashion trend is evolving. Buying into it can be as simple as throwing on a frilly dress, digitally detoxing and escaping to Ibiza. However, those more attuned to movements of the sartorial zeitgeist are cognisant of the different ways it’s being expressed. Now, boho chic is being swept up in the sort of well-heeled sophistication that’s commanding both the runways and street style set.

The ‘60s are still a core point of reference, but rather than it being rooted in the dress sense of Woodstock attendees or Haight-Ashbury locals, it’s taking inspiration from the gamine wardrobes of Beatniks like Jean Seberg and ladies who lunch like Lee Radizwell. It’s still counterculture, but with a bit more class.

When I think back to the early 2000s, boho fashion reigned supreme. Vanessa Hudgens was the poster child of Disney's cool-teen brigade, and her Coachella flower crowns were soon seen adorning the heads of fashion girls everywhere. In the magazines, Sienna Miller and Kate Moss dominated. Every celeb title featured them in looks with trailing handkerchief hemlines, low-slung belts and slouchy suede boots, and we were all hooked.

Then, as quickly as it came, boho seemed to disappear, and instead, other trends and hero pieces were embraced. Such is the fashion cycle. But, if there’s one thing I know when it comes to style, it’s that what goes around, comes around. And now, somewhat unexpectedly, I need only glance at TikTok or out and about on the streets of London to see it: boho is back again.

Indeed, boho, with all its pretty charm, seems determined to keep us under its spell. Over the past few years, the bohemian spirit has crept quietly back into the industry’s consciousness, re-emerging not just on pavements and at festivals, but on the runways themselves. When I saw Dior’s Cruise collection back in 2021, the bohemian influence was unmistakable: delicate lace maxi dresses, slouchy, buckled boots and artfully tied headscarves captured a wanderlust-fuelled aesthetic.

But most recently, it was Chloé’s spring/summer 2025 show that truly cemented boho’s comeback. Chemena Kamali’s second collection was a sweeping ode to the brand’s heritage. After two weeks of uniting fashion enthusiasts and sports fanatics, the 2025 Wimbledon tennis championship has come to an end. Demanding smart-casual attire, Wimbledon goers showcased a number of different looks that perfectly exude easy summer elegance, however, unlike previous years, I noticed that the best-dressed attendees did not rely heavily on fleeting trends. Instead, they focused on incorporating their everyday personal style into the more traditional Wimbledon attire. And one stylish celebrity who absolutely nailed this is Sienna Miller.

Spotted yesterday in a Ralph Lauren crochet crop top, white tiered midi skirt and coin belt, the actress proved once again that she can dress up for an occasion while staying true to her boho chic aesthetic. You might initially think that this outfit combo is too free-flowing for the more formal apparel expected at Wimbledon, but the actress used one key styling trick to keep to the dress etiquette—swapping out boho-inspired gladiator sandals for a pair of strappy heels.

Although this outfit would have worked just as well with a pair of flat sandals for a more casual event like a festival, the strappy heels helped to elongate the silhouette of the top and skirt pairing, adding a touch of elegance to an otherwise laid-back outfit.

For a long time, it seemed that micro trends appeared to be the solution to bring a fresh take to a summer capsule wardrobe, with the odd pair of holiday shorts or linen trousers zhuzhed up with a polka dot top or bandana print. (Yes, two of the year's defining summer styles.) My, how times have changed.

Looking at the recent runways, you’ll also spot an abundance of silk camisoles, like the ones designed by Chemana Kamali for Chloé’s autumn/winter 2025 collection presented in February, or the sumptuous frills adorning the vampy satin gowns seen on Zimmermann’s catwalk. While these are indeed cardinal motifs for a whimsical sense of dress, I’d contend that pintuck tops have usurped them all in 2025.

But what exactly is a pintuck top? Pintucking is a design element that describes the process of folding fabric into neat ornamental rows. Consider it like pleating, but with the crease sewn down to create a dimensional appliqué. When applied to balmy blouses, the results are endless.
