Balmy days and long, warmer evenings are finally our reality, and I’m embracing this golden stretch of the calendar by devoting some time to perfecting my summer capsule wardrobe.

After months of heavy layers and muted tones, the moment has finally arrived to welcome back the elegant cuts and pretty shades that felt too summer-ready over the past nine months. Brimming with intent, I’ve been gathering new-season styling inspiration, and this week I've landed upon something particularly special. Spotted within hours of each other, Victoria Beckham and Blake Lively stepped out in gorgeous dresses in the "glass slipper blue" colour trend, and now I know I won't be far behind.

Attending an event in Dubai, Beckham wore a form-fitting dress in a cool-toned oceanic shade complete with an iridescent finish, which she paired with tonal strappy sandals in the same ethereal hue. The Los Angeles County Museum of Art (LACMA) held its annual Art + Film Gala on Saturday, raising a record $6.4 million for the museum. Given the celebrity outfits we got to ogle at, we think it should be renamed the Art + Film + Fashion Gala (though admittedly that's a bit of a mouthful). On the guest list for the Gucci-sponsored event were the likes of Kaia Gerber, Kim Kardashian, Solange Knowles, Viola Davis, Greta Lee, Charli XCX, Emily Ratajkowski, Anna Wintour, Yara Shahidi, and so many more.

Here's the thing. I don't live in New York, so avoiding wearing certain things there is pretty easy for me to do, as it's just somewhere that I travel a few times a year. If you live in NYC, I suggest wearing whatever you want because you only live once. I've ruined more clothing and accessory items in the city than I care to admit, so there are certain things I just leave at home. The pretty shoe trend Blake Lively just wore is one of them.

One of the things that I love most about living in New York City is that no one bats an eye when you go all out in the dressing department, no matter what the occasion might be. I've slipped on the same sheer midi dress and kitten heels to run to Trader Joe's that I've worn to dinner at Balthazar, and never was I made to feel over- or underdressed.

In case you didn't see Blake Lively numerous times on your TV screen during the Super Bowl perched next to Taylor Swift, she was wearing an Adidas x Balenciaga red tracksuit, and her arms were stacked with Tiffany & Co. bracelets. As much as I write about celebrity style, personally, I don't often find myself looking to the celeb set for outfit inspiration. Sure, the occasional Zoë Kravitz or Jennifer Lawrence look will catch my eye, but it's rare that one single high-profile person's style choices get their hooks in me. And yet, there is someone right now who has done just that, and it's probably not who you'd expect. 

In the last few weeks, no one's Instagram account has enthralled me quite as much as Kelly Rutherford's. Containing a mix of inspirational quotes and seemingly effortless yet mouthwateringly chic outfits, the former Gossip Girl star's feed has had me in what I can only describe as a chokehold for days now, so much so that practically my entire saved folder is made up of mirror selfies she's posted this winter.

Apparently, I'm not the only one who's recently become a super fan. "Out of all the original Gossip Girl cast members, I don’t know why I didn’t think to follow Kelly more closely," Brooklyn-based freelance fashion editor Cortne Bonilla explains over DM. "A few weeks ago, I came across her Instagram profile after one of my favorites brands, By Malene Birger, reposted an ensemble of hers," she continues. "In the age of mass girlhood, it’s so refreshing to see a woman of a certain age embracing personal style, experimentation, and emerging brands." Maybe it's just my imagination, but I feel like the minute that fall weather comes back around in New York City, Blake Lively and Taylor Swift turn on, getting photographed together all the time in effortless autumnal looks that I always want to copy for the entirety of the season. And this year is hardly an exception. In the last few weeks, we've seen the two best friends a ton, and just as they always do, both have been showing up in outfits worthy of pressing Control + C on. 

Their latest sighting came when the duo was photographed leaving Bradley Cooper's apartment on Thursday, with Lively and Swift going their separate ways afterward. It was at that moment of separation that I noticed just how good the Gossip Girl actress's chunky cardigan was—and just how much I needed one for my own wardrobe. Specifically, she wore an oat-colored, shawl-neck cardigan sweater with a matching tee, baggy jeans, Ugg slippers from the brand's collaboration with Opening Ceremony, and a denim Chanel Flap Bag.

Ugg season is officially upon us. In fact, as I type this story, I'm sitting in my desk chair wearing my go-to Ugg Scuffette II Slippers ($95). While I'm wearing run-of-the-mill shoes like a plebeian, Blake Lively's pair is significantly harder to get your hands on. Photographed in New York City with husband Ryan Reynolds, Lively wore the Ugg x Opening Ceremony Tasman Slippers that are currently marked up significantly on Poshmark due to their lack of availability. With a cool buckle detail and a trendy platform sole, it's no wonder these mules sold out lightning fast.

As much as it pains me to admit it, I don't have any spring break plans this year—it's quite a bit harder to schedule a getaway in adulthood than it was in my college days. These days, there are two main drivers of beauty trends.:The first is TikTok, which dictates what's cool in more ways than one—whether that's the best blush formulas, the most effective color correctors, or the easiest damage-free hairstyles. The latest trend to get both a TikTok and a celeb seal of approval is something called milk bath nails. Anastasia Totty, Nail Artist, and LeChat Nails educator, agrees, saying, "It's very popular because it’s a fun twist on a classic off-white manicure."

Here's the thing though. Milk bath nails don't have to be white or off-white. Modern milk bath manicures can be any color you like. As Gerstein puts it, "All milk bath means is that it’s showing through but it’s making it milky looking. Some of the new ones are these marble designs. I’d consider those to be milk bath nails too but they look more like stone." 

How Are Milk Bath Nails Created in a Salon Setting?

Gerstein says the milk bath technique is flexible, meaning there are multiple ways you can use it to get the same result. "It’s just layering and using the same color to sheer and blur out a design," she says. "You can do it with gel, with nail polish, with acrylic. You can actually encase flowers in the acrylic, which is the original milk bath nail, but there are 100 ways to do it." 

Each nail artist might have a slightly different take on the technique. For Totty, it's all about using acrylic powder. "In the salon when I do it it’s usually encapsulated multicolor dry flowers and leaves with a mix of white and clear acrylic powder," she says. "Once you file and shape the nails you can see some parts of the flowers show on the surface, when you apply topcoat it almost looks like the flowers are sinking in the 'milk bath.'"

Can Milk Bath Nails Be Re-Created at Home?

The short answer is yes, yes they can. Morgan Dixon, Nailing Hollywood Artist and owner of Lab & Lounge: A Concept Salon in New Orleans, explains how she would recommend doing it. "You just need an off-white polish, a topcoat (to mix into the off-white polish so that it’s slightly transparent), and dried floral petals," she says. "You start by prepping and manicuring your nail. From there, I like to break up my floral petals because it’s best to work with small pieces. From there, apply your base coat and let it dry. After that, you create a marbled effect by applying the diluted topcoat and off-white polish mixture around the nail." The trick here is to not fully cover the nail, but apply just enough to give it a marbled look. 

From there, let it dry, then apply a few pieces of floral around the nails. "Don’t overthink it—just randomly place them. Go back over with another layer of the marbled off-white mixture to give it dimension. Look over them and see if they could use any other layering. If not, topcoat and that’s it!" 

Gerstein, on the other hand, recommends a slightly different technique. Start with applying one or two coats of sheer nail color. Then, create a design—whether that's a floral design using real petals, a stamp applicator, or peel-and-stick nail stickers—and apply another layer of the same sheer nail color over top to blur it out. "That’s the do-it-yourself version," she says. "It’s basically a technique of layering where you sandwich a design in a color." 

If you do decide to use real flower petals, Kim has a tip to make things easier for first-timers. "When using dried flowers at home, a good tip is to pre-soak them in either water or a clear polish so that they are malleable enough to sit flat on the nails," she says.

Thin hair may be low maintenance in some aspects (it requires little time to blow-dry and your salon appointments will be kept short), but it’s notoriously one of the most difficult hair types to style. "Shorter styles adding textured layers for lots of movement can help the hair to look thicker and give body,” advises hairstylist and content creator Holly Carr. "And mid-length styles with soft face shaping are great for adding soft waves and still being able to put up. If you have long hair then Carr recommends keeping the weight in the ends. "Blunt cuts can help to keep the ends looking thicker and healthier for longer.”

When it comes to styling, Carr recommends creating waves or curls to add fullness. "You can curl the hair underneath or bring just a couple of pieces around the ears forwards toward the face,” she says. "This creates the illusion of thicker hair around the neck and face.” And for those who prefer up-dos? "Textured hair ups are also great,” she adds. "Try lifting the hair at the crown for volume and at the sides for width while any loose pieces add detail.”

Adding volume to the roots (with some subtle backcombing) and to the ends (wide barrel tongs work best) makes hair look thicker by creating height and fullness.

6. Soft Waves

Soft, mismatched waves are a great way to add movement and dimension. Hide thin ends by curling hair from the bottom up.

7. Fluffy Fringe

Don't be afraid to experiment with a fringe even if you have thin hair. A soft, fluffy effect works best.

8. Structured Bob

Shaping hair into sculpted waves both helps to lift and emphasise the angles of your face and creates the appearance of lifted, more buoyant hair.

9. Wavy Chignon

Thin hair in an up-do doesn't have to look flat - case in point above. Curl or wave your hair before styling the up-do in order to create texture from the roots.

10. Layered Fringe

While Carr advises against a super layered look (this will thin hair out even further), a few short face-framing layers from the fringe is a great way to add shape to thin hair.

11. Bubble Ponytail

The on-trend bubble ponytail is a fun option for thin hair since it adds shape and structure throughout the lengths.

12. Angled Cut

An angled cut with longer strands towards the front adds movement and creates the illusion of more hair. Style with loose curls, like Keira Knightley, to add additional oomph.

13. Ribbon Up-Do

Not only does a ribbon distract from thin hair by adding additional movement to the lengths of your ponytail, but it's also incredibly on trend.

14. Sleek Low Bun

When it was announced that Blake Lively would be co-hosting the 2022 Met Gala alongside Ryan Reynolds, Lin-Manuel Miranda, and Regina King, we were understandably hyped. After all, the Gossip Girl star is responsible for some of the annual event's most iconic and memorable red carpet looks. (Who can forget that ultra-lavish gold-and-red Versace gown she wore to the 2018 Met Gala?) And as per her usual modus operandi, Lively didn't disappoint.

While last night's SAG Awards red carpet was chock-full of A-listers like Reese Witherspoon, Kerry Washington, and Selena Gomez, a certain famous couple was conspicuously absent: Blake Lively and Ryan Reynolds. Ladies and gentlemen: Blake Lively and Ryan Reynolds have officially made their return to the red carpet, and it was definitely worth the wait. They haven't been photographed at an event together since before the pandemic, so fans were eagerly anticipating their appearance at the New York City premiere of Reynolds's new movie, Free Guy. 

For the premiere, Lively wore summer's number one dress trend: cutouts. She chose a glistening pink Prabal Gurung dress that featured ab-baring cutouts and an open back. If you've ever seen a Blake Lively street style outfit, you know that she loves a pretty dress. If you've ever shopped at Mango, you know that it has lots of great dresses. Since you're here reading this, I'm going to go ahead and guess you're aware of both of these parallel statements. My point in making this connection is that Lively just wore one of these pretty Mango dresses while out in her neighborhood in NYC, and it's a very special Mango dress at that.

This bohemian printed maxi dress is part of the brand's just-launched Mango x Chufy collection. Chufy is also known as Sofia Sanchez de Betak, the Argentinian designer and longtime street style star. You and I aren't the only ones who love to shop at Reformation. It's hardly a secret that celebrities also love the wildly popular retailer's pretty dresses, skirts, tops, and everything else. One of those celebrities is Blake Lively, and she's clearly clued into the pretty print that people lost it over when it first debuted earlier this season (including our senior news editor Erin—see below).

The name of the print is Heath, and the Bridgerton vibes are strong. The softly colored print resembles wallpaper that would be in a Victorian-era house, with its combination of pink flowers, bows, and woven columns. The pattern made its first appearance on a smocked top with a fitted bodice. It quickly sold out (but is now back in stock), and Reformation quickly started releasing other styles in the print as well. Lively opted for a linen midi dress with a bustier-style bodice and ruffled hem. She paired it with fisherman-style jellies, which I fully support. We had very few red carpet fashion moments to indulge in last year, but they will no doubt resume at some point in 2021—and we'll be there to cover them. Red carpet events are always a huge team effort, as they require hardworking stylists, tailors, makeup artists, and more, and the final product is always a glorious look for the fashion history books.

Looking ahead to the return of red carpet events—whenever that may be—I mined runway images to come up with some predictions about what celebrities will wear. For instance, I thought the sultry Versace S/S 21 collection was rife with dresses that Blake Lively would love, and Molly Goddard's show had Gemma Chan's name written all over it. This inventive Halpern S/S 21 dress might be too forward-thinking for the Oscars, but here's hoping it pops up on the Met Gala red carpet. Katy Perry, are you listening? 

This intricate gown from the Chanel Métiers d'Art 2021 show is giving me Natalie Portman vibes. 

Christopher John Rogers is a master of both color and shapes, and this S/S 21 dress proves it. I can picture Zendaya in this cheery number. 

British designer Molly Goddard is known for her poufy dresses, but this one from S/S 21 just might be my favorite. Fashion chameleon Gemma Chan would pull this off with aplomb. 

We all know Tracee Ellis Ross loves metallic dresses, so I think she'd fancy this Alexandre Vauthier Haute Couture S/S 21 look. 

I'll be very disappointed if Blake Lively doesn't don this Versace S/S 21 dress at some point next year. 

Sarah Paulson loves a statement red carpet moment, so I'm envisioning her in this Givenchy F/W 20 caped look. 

This bold Roksanda S/S 21 dress would suit Lizzo's penchant for extraordinary red carpet outfits. 

If I had to predict who would choose this Schiaparelli S/S 21 minidress, I'd go with supermodel Gisele Bündchen. 

The jewel of Copenhagen, Cecilie Bahnsen, is known for her confectionary designs. I can picture Olivia Palermo looking radiant in this S/S 21 number. 

Kate Bosworth came to my mind immediately after seeing this frothy pink Giambattista Valli F/W 20 dress. 

Emilia Wickstead took the statement-collar trend to the next level for S/S 21 and it's giving me Katie Holmes vibes. 

This LaQuan Smith S/S 21 dress is giving me major Jennifer Lopez vibes.

Elle Fanning gravitates towards princess gowns and this stunning one from Erdem S/S 21 is more than worthy of her consideration.

Close your eyes and picture this scene: It’s September 19, 2007, at approximately 9 p.m. Where are you? What are you doing? Who are you with? 

If you were a 20-something college student like Tyler McCall, Casey Lewis, and me, odds are you were sitting on the couch with your roommates and tuning in to the series premiere of Gossip Girl on The CW. Back when must-see TV was actually a thing you had to pencil into your schedule, it didn’t take long for the highly anticipated adaptation of the young-adult book series by Cecily von Ziegesar to earn a spot in our lineup of weekly shows. 

Looking back at what was arguably among the last cohort of non-streaming TV sensations (Gossip Girl counts both Mad Men and Breaking Bad as contemporaries) offers not only the welcome respite of nostalgia but also an amusing glimpse into the now-questionable costumes, personal style, and fashion statements of our beloved Upper East Siders. (I don’t know about you, but I never want to see another bubble hem again!) 

As the IRL minions of Blair Waldorf, Serena van der Woodsen, and the rest of the Constance Billard School for Girls gang, it’s hardly a surprise that McCall, Lewis, and I all went on to not only pursue careers in fashion media but also spent time at digital editors at Teen Vogue. While you are likely familiar with McCall for her current role as editor in chief of Fashionista, you might also know and love her as the mind behind #WaldorfWednesdays on Instagram. Similarly, while Lewis is an editor at New York Magazine by day, she spends her leisure time curating @ThankYouAtoosa, the delightful throwback account in which she chronicles the hits (and misses) of teen magazine culture from the ’90s to 2010s. 

And who am I? That’s one secret I’ll never tell. 

Just kidding. Like Little J, I tend to lurk a bit more on the fringes as the content strategy director here at Who What Wear, but I low-key wrote a master’s thesis on the evolution of female characters on television—no joke. If that doesn’t make us some of the most qualified Gossip Girl fans out there, then, by all means, please introduce me to our new queen bee. 

So while prep school uniforms and empire waists may not be making a comeback in our closets anytime soon, it’s safe to say that The Met steps will always hold a special place in our hearts. Now, without further ado, below are nine of our favorite Gossip Girl outfits with a bit about why we loved them. 

Prep School Perfection

"I always loved Blair and Serena's everyday school outfits way more than their gala gowns or super fashiony, extremely Eric Daman-y looks. I grew up desperately wishing I wore a school uniform, and even though real school uniforms looked nothing like the ones on Gossip Girl, I obsessed over their poufy, pleated skirts and crisp button-downs. I would have been laughed right out of my high school if I showed up in knee-high socks and flats, but man, Blair and Serena made it look cool." — Lewis

"When it came to the school uniforms, the show really hit its stride in season two. Did they push the boundaries of what might pass the dress code at an elite private school in Manhattan? Sure. Did Blair know how to kill it in a cape? Absolutely. And what, you didn't wear a bejeweled headband to school? Okay. (I found this exact headband by Jennifer Behr in the corner of her sample sale, and I have never been prouder of my shopping prowess.)"  — McCall

"I'll be honest: I went to a prep school where my classmates and I looked nothing like this, ever. Our dress code of collared shirts, blazers, and chinos was decidedly masculine (the school transitioned from all boys to co-ed in the '70s but neglected to consider female bodies in the dress code until at least 2010), so seeing Blair and Serena on screen gave me a glimpse of what might have been. That said, white button-down shirts are still a staple in my wardrobe, so thank you, Ralph Lauren." — Elovitz

IRL Inspiration

"Season one, in my opinion, was as good as it got as far as Gossip Girl fashion went. How flawless were these dresses? I remember reading about Abigail Lorick in Teen Vogue—if my memory serves before Gossip Girl came out—and I just thought she was the coolest. I think Eleanor Waldorf's fictitious fashion line was based on Lorick, and in my mind, the designer (a former Ford model) was basically another character on Gossip Girl because her clothes were so Blair Waldorf. She may have even made a cameo on the show?" — Lewis

"The jumping-off point of inspiration for Serena was Kate Moss, which meant over-the-knee boots became something of a staple for her. I have doubts about whether these would fly at a real private school, but they still look incredible. I always was more of a Blair than a Serena, but that never stopped me from desperately wanting a pair of Stuart Weitzman's iconic thigh-high boots." — McCall

Special Occasions

"My hands-down, all-time-favorite look from Gossip Girl is Blair's outfit from the first Thanksgiving episode, "Blair Waldorf Must Pie." First, it must be said that this is the best episode of GG. Second, it's just quintessential Blair, from the lacy Marc by Marc Jacobs dress to the bow-patterned tights. I bought a similar pair from Forever21 at the time and wore them to death. Maybe that's why I still can't get enough of a novelty tight?" — McCall

"I spent several years wearing empire-waist, babydoll dresses and patterned tights because Blair Waldorf did. Both things looked truly awful on me, but they were made for Blair. I still dream about her lace Marc Jacobs dress on the perfectly named season one Thanksgiving episode, "Blair Waldorf Must Pie!” The Trina Turk capelet is really quite ugly, but it's so, so 2007, and that makes me love it." — Lewis

"Because Gossip Girl always started around the same time school came back into session, we never saw very many summery looks on the show, which was a shame. But when we did—like on season two's debut episode, "Summer, Kind of Wonderful," costume designer Eric Daman knocked it out of the park. I'm still obsessed with Blair's look from the white party, a scalloped Marc by Marc Jacobs dress and a floral Jennifer Behr headband. So dreamy." — McCall

"Spoiler alert: I fell more in love with Blair's (second) wedding dress than she did with the man she was going to marry in the series finale. I don't know if it was the conclusion of my favorite show that was giving me all the feels or what (hey, it certainly wasn't her groom), but if I had a secret wedding Pinterest board, this Elie Saab Couture 2012 gown in baby blue would be the only thing on it." — Elovitz

"'Iconic' is a bit overused at this point, but there's no other way to describe Serena's very first outfit on Gossip Girl's pilot episode. The striped Petit Bateau shirt, the leather blazer in the most perfect shade of camel, the little pop of yellow in the form of the handkerchief. I can't think of another time she dressed so understated, but it suits her so well." — Lewis

"Unsurprisingly, I related to Jenny's wardrobe most when she was doing her best Blair Waldorf impersonation toward the end of the first season. There were lots of pastel shades and darling socks. Sure, she would become a bleach-blonde goth in just a few short years, but we'll always have the memories of sweet Little J." — McCall

"How could we skip the legendary Chuck Bass scarf? Chuck's style went off the rails by the end of the show (remember the time he was dressed like Prince George?), but early on, his preppy Upper East Side uniform worked so well for him, and the J. Press scarf looked so good with all of his popped collars and fancy layers." — Lewis

"Like many of my fellow Gossip Girl fans, while we may have aspired to be a Blair or Serena, it was often easiest to relate to Jenny Humphrey. I don't know that it could be called a glow-up, but to say that Little J went through a serious style evolution during the series's six seasons would be a major understatement. As Tyler points out, Jenny started off by emulating Blair's style, then gradually embraced her Brooklyn-bad-girl side as the show progressed. Jenny traded in her preppy headbands, bows, and bright colors for layers upon layers of black eyeliner, offbeat accessories, and an essential leather jacket. While Jenny's anti-establishment new persona lost me along the way (let's face it: you live in a loft in Dumbo, dear), I'll always appreciate how the changes in her character's costumed reflected her growing confidence as an individual." — Elovitz

Hey, Upper East Siders—remember Gossip Girl? The now-iconic late-noughties drama, where preppy teenagers galavanted around New York City, acting like adults and wearing designer clothes? Well, the series is set for a return this summer, as HBO Max is said to have a reboot in the works.

And while we are, of course, hoping the new series contains just as many dramatic plotlines as the original, we are equally as excited to see what the new set of Gossip Girl costumes will look like. Will there be a new Queen B who will parade around in preppy-patterned looks and signature hair accessories? Will someone fill the Serena Van Der Woodsen–shaped hole in our lives by offering a plethora of boho-chic outfit inspiration?

Between Blair Waldorf and best friend, Serena, Gossip Girl's original iteration acted as an aspirational mood board of sorts, containing an array of outfits we loved but would likely never have the chance to wear. And though the characters attended an elite private school on New York's Upper East Side, they also happened to have the most relaxed uniform policy I've ever seen, with each student allowed to liberally add their own flair and accessories alongside their school clothes.

So what will Gossip Girl character costumes look like in 2020? Our bets are on a mixture of Chanel tweed skirt suits, OTT embellished Miu Miu tops and cardigans, Dior-inspired school uniform dressing (featuring plenty of plaid) and a few preppy Prada pieces thrown in for good measure.

Our New-Season Gossip Girl Costume Predictions

Next up, the biggest S/S 20 fashion trends you need to know. 

They might have only just ended, but the 2010s were riddled with beauty trends you have probably already forgotten (even if your Facebook memories try their hardest not to let you). Beauty has always been a means of self-expression, but thanks to social media, it became even more of a space to make a statement, large or small. Platforms like Instagram and Pinterest became a go-to source to discover new ideas, reveal new haircuts, swap recommendations, and share opinions on the latest looks, for better or worse. Thanks to this newfound democratization of trends, beauty also became increasingly more inclusive, with many brands embracing people of color and different body types, as well as genderless products.

Of course, celebrities were at the forefront of many 2010s trends, including one famous family in particular. Love them or hate them, there’s no denying the Kardashian-Jenners’ (often controversial) contributions to the industry. (We named Kim one of the 21 women who defined style in the decade for a reason.) You’ll see them pop up several times in this list, along with other influential names like Rihanna and Cara Delevingne. 

So as we set our sights on new 2020 looks to conquer, it’s officially time to pause and remember some of the best—and best-to-forget—looks, products, and techniques that took over the previous decade. Some might be long gone (we hardly knew ye, strobing), but others, like clean beauty, have surpassed "trend” to become movements that we’ll continue to see in the industry for years to come. 

Makeup

1. Celebrity Beauty Brands

Celebs have been putting their names on fragrances for decades, but in the 2010s, the branding bubble exploded. Kylie Cosmetics made Kylie Jenner a billionaire, while Rihanna’s Fenty Beauty became a best seller at Sephora, largely thanks to the brand’s inclusive and extensive shade ranges.

2. Contouring

The concept of using makeup to exaggerate and visually sharpen the angles on one’s face using different shades of makeup, contouring skyrocketed in popularity thanks, again, to Kim Kardashian West, who shared her technique on Instagram.

3. Strobing

The shiny stepsister to contouring, strobing involved piling on the highlighter to play up the cheekbones, as Gigi Hadid demonstrated at a 2015 event. 

4. BB and CC Cream

5. Going Fresh-Faced

Toward the end of the decade, makeup became more subdued as people started eschewing overdone looks in favor of going natural—or even sans makeup altogether, which BFFs Drew Barrymore and Cameron Diaz did in this gorgeous selfie.

6. Full Brows

Everyone put down their tweezers (and began cringing at their overly groomed early aughts brows), thanks to brow-endowed celebs like Cara Delevingne and Lily Collins.

Hair

1. Braids

Pinterest opened our eyes to a wide world of braids we never knew existed before—from fishtails to Dutch braids to braided headbands.

2. Colorful Hair

Beginning around 2012, it became a rite of passage for every celeb to dye their hair a different shade of the rainbow.

3. Ombré Hair Color

Another Pinterest-fueled obsession, legions of women suddenly let their hair get dramatically lighter from root to tip on purpose, inspired by the likes of Chrissy Teigen.

4. The Lob

Long bobs became the HOTM (haircut of the moment) starting around 2016 when celebs like Nina Dobrev started making the chop.

Skincare

1. Going Under the Needle

As Botox, fillers, and other procedures became more common, they also became less taboo. Kylie Jenner first admitted to getting lip fillers in 2015 (and dissolving them three years later), while sister Kim Kardashian West even shares her visits to dermatologist to the stars Simon Ourian with her millions of followers. 

2. Clean Beauty

Transparency in beauty has also extended to product formulas, with consumers seeking out nontoxic beauty alternatives stripped of potentially harmful ingredients like parabens, phthalates, and even fragrances. From Tata Harper’s naturally sourced serum to Kopari’s organic coconut oil, there’s a "clean" product for every need.

Another K-beauty import, single-use, serum-soaked masks became a skincare—and selfie—staple.

As far as spring trends go, one that we're truly the most excited to try out also just received approval from Blake Lively, straight from the streets of NYFW. On the S/S 20 runways, it was possible to ignore all of the '70s references, including the resurrection of vests. The heavy-hitting runways of Louis Vuitton, Miu Miu, Celine, Saint Laurent, Gucci, and so many more were filled with them, and soon the same will be said of celebrities' closets.

At this morning's Michael Kors show at NYFW, regular attendee Blake Lively wore a chic look from the brand that was vest dressing at its finest: a menswear-inspired vest over a white shirt with wide-leg black pants. It's probably not new information that trousers that are basically the opposite of skinny jeans are wildly popular right now, and the proportions are just right when paired with a fitted vest. We fully expect to see a lot of this Annie Hall–esque outfit combo in the near future.
