We made it! Finally, it's the first Monday in May, which means that the chicest celebrities and tastemakers are busy ascending the famous steps at the Metropolitan Museum of Art for the 2026 Met Gala. This year, the museum will display an exhibition titled Costume Art, with the ball's dress code being Fashion Is Art. Guests were asked to "express their own relationship to fashion as an embodied art form and celebrate the countless depictions of the dressed body throughout art history," and so far, many have done what they were told. (There are always a rogue few who don't, a daring choice given how often non-thematic looks are met with negative reviews.) Naturally, cohost Beyoncé knows better, rising to the occasion like she always does—and doing so alongside her daughter Blue Ivy Carter, who made her Met Gala debut tonight.

For tonight's ball, Beyoncé's first in a decade, the Cowboy Carter singer chose to work with Balmain's former creative director, designer Olivier Rousteing, together creating a silver, skeletal naked dress fit with a matching crown à la her sister Solange's Heavenly Bodies: Fashion and the Catholic Imagination headpiece from 2018 and a feather cape. (In 2016, at her last Met Gala, she dressed in a peach-colored latex number by Givenchy.) The crown wasn't the only embellished accessory she wore, though. With it, she worked with Chopard, curating a mix of diamond pieces, including a necklace in 18K white gold with one 6.41-carat brilliant-cut diamond and 140 carats of additional diamonds. And that's not counting the bracelet, earrings, and rings.

Her daughter went a simpler route, donning a white, strapless bubble dress with a shorter hemline that perfectly showed off her Cinderella-esque pumps and a coordinating bomber jacket, both by Balenciaga. A diamond necklace with a yellow diamond pendant was the star, while her brown cat-eye sunglasses gave her look a feeling of unbothered coolness that only a 14-year-old girl could pull off. Yes, she's 14, and yes, we're feeling old too.

On the red carpet, Beyoncé was the picture of a proud mom, saying, “She looks so beautiful," about her daughter. "It’s incredible to be able to share [her first Met Gala] with her.” She also praised her daughter’s red carpet posing, saying, “She was ready! She is ready.”

The Cowboy Carter tour isn’t any old string of Beyoncé concerts: It’s a celebration of the legendary singer’s Southern roots, a lurid display of fashion and beauty, and most importantly, a musical homecoming for the Houston native.

Despite the ever-changing wardrobe of fringe-decorated Western garb that accompanies the songstress to every city, there’s one facet of Beyoncé’s ethereal looks that ties everything together. It’s the physical manifestation of her proud heritage, the asset she plays up the most during this tour, and the source of inspiration behind her own beauty brand, Cécred. You guessed it—this invisible string is her hair, and it’s no shocker that her Texas-size, honey-blonde curls are full of tour secrets.

To get the lowdown on the Album of the Year Grammy Award winner’s hair, I gabbed with Beyoncé’s hairstylist and Cécred’s lead global stylist, Neal Farinah. Ahead, the secret message behind those big, bouncy waves, how they concocted the perfect Cowboy Carter blonde, and the very products Farinah uses to make the performer’s strands concert-ready every night. The Beyoncé Blowout Breakdown

Whether it’s the built-in fans constantly blowing back her lengthy tresses or the hairography baked into every performance, any member of the Beyhive is familiar with the significance (and star quality) of Beyoncé’s blonde mane. “I’m always so inspired by big, Texas hair. We definitely wanted to reference that classic big-body, voluminous look,” Farinah tells Who What Wear. “It’s a nod to Southern glam but modernized with a lot of movement, body, and bounce. You know that hair has its own choreography at this point!”

Her onstage styles are designed to stay “flawless” despite the show’s intricate hairography, but concertgoers will notice a string of visual interludes showcasing the performer’s strands in everything from spaghetti Western micro braids to vintage-inspired (and aptly named) beehive barnets, her hair teased tall as she lights a cigar with the Statue of Liberty (IYKYK). According to the hairstylist, these styles are reimaginations of classic country Western culture in very Beyoncé iterations—meaning more glam, more creativity, and more edge.

Farinah primarily took inspiration from “bouncy Southern belle curls”—think “Ya Ya”–featured artist Dolly Parton—when crafting the hair direction for this tour, but it was important to “make it feel [like] classic Beyoncé” at its core. “You’ll see a lot of different hair looks throughout the show’s visuals, which tap on so many iconic Southern styles—everything from braids to bouffants. But on stage, it’s all about the bouncy blowout,” he adds. “Like I said, we need that movement, baby!”

But curls and blowouts were only half the battle. While the “16 Carriages” songstress has been known to switch up her shade from her natural deep brunette to varying shades of bronde and platinum (hey, Cowboy Carter album cover!), it was important to devise a new shade that would take her through her monthslong tour and symbolize this new, genre-defying era.

“Color definitely plays a role in the show,” says Farinah. “We took the classic honey blonde and added a bit of a punchy, cool-toned twist,” he adds, an unseasonally cool shade rising among the fashion-forward as the weather warms. “It’s the perfect evolution of the Cowboy Carter platinum and that iconic honey shade Beyoncé is known for.”

But at the end of the day, it all comes down to the products Farinah trusts to use on the megastar’s mane for countless nights of hairography, and he dished on the exact routine he relies on every night.

The star can croon that she “woke up like this” largely because of the proper hair preparation that the pair painstakingly worked at leading up to the tour. “Getting hair tour-ready—three months of heat styling, sweat, and general wear and tear—means we did a lot of treatment prep to make sure it was the strongest and healthiest it could be,” he explains.

As much as I'd love to pretend that I'm *actually* Beyoncé, realistically, copying her latest hair color is about as close as I'm going to get to that fantasy. Anyone who treks to their local salon looking for a "Beyoncé blonde" look would agree—her signature hue really is the stuff of legends.

Beyoncé's longtime color, which she has sported for most of her career, is a warm honey shade deemed "sun-washed blonde" by her colorist Rita Hazan. As of late, however, Beyoncé has had a slightly different take on her regular hue that Hazan calls "chantilly." Naturally, I had to learn more about what this is and why it's perfect for fall. If you want to freshen up your highlights in a unique way or just want to try something new altogether, keep scrolling. I asked Hazan for all the details on Bey's latest look and how you can try it out for yourself.

What is chantilly? 

Although we've come to associate Beyoncé with her classic golden blonde, Hazan envisioned something with a little more contrast for Bey now that fall is in full swing. Hazan has coined this new signature shade chantilly. What exactly is chantilly, you ask? "It's a creamy blonde with a little warmth to it—[almost] buttercream-ish," says Hazan. "The Renaissance Tour is over, and now, she needs more of a warm, neutral color, especially for fall."

Although it isn't anything dramatically different from Beyoncé's usual look, I love the idea of a warm, buttery shade of blonde that isn't just straight-up platinum. It looks so good on golden and olive skin tones. Beyoncé and I have a similar skin tone, and although I've never considered going blonde before (the upkeep!), seeing her with chantilly hair is making me reconsider. Most people go for a chestnut or deep brunette for fall, but this is a great way to experiment with something warmer without going super bold. Basically, it's for the folks who may want to try something new without going full-on cowboy copper. 

How can you make chantilly work for you?

Hazan's rule of thumb for this color is to go one to two shades darker than your current shade. This is a good rule to remember for every skin tone, but it will also depend on what your current color is and whether you get highlights or not. You can experiment with chantilly in different ways. If you really want to commit, you can go full Beyoncé mode and get her exact shade, or if you have dirty-blonde or light-brown hair, you could just go a few shades darker to give your hair a bit more dimension and contrast.

If you already get highlights or have blonde hair, she simply recommends darkening your look by a shade or two. Hazan also has a few tips on what to ask your colorist if you'd like to try this one out for yourself: "Ask for some contrast and dimensions with your highlights. You can add lowlights to create the contrast one to two shades darker. Keep the color tones buttery and golden."

There is no one more knowledgeable or experienced in the realm of bridal hair than celebrity hairstylist Kim Kimble. She's worked with A-listers such as Kerry Washington, H.E.R., and Beyoncé. (In fact, Kimble did Beyoncé's hair on her wedding day in 2008.) She's also the head of Euphoria's hair department, meaning she's responsible for some of the show's most influential hairstyles. (Does anyone remember Maddy's bedazzled hair? I think about it daily.)

Ahead of the epic giveaway, we had the chance to sit down with Kimble and chat about all things hair—more specifically, wedding hair. 

First, we wanted to know all about Kimble's partnership with the wedding platform. "I love weddings," she says. "It’s just like the red carpet. This is a bride who has to pick the right dress, the right hair, the right makeup. For them to offer this opportunity to make someone’s life easier on their wedding day by having a professional hairstylist, I think it's great. The Consultation Is Everything

Kimble means it when she compares a wedding day to a red carpet event. In fact, she says the prep should be similar. "I think a bride needs to start with a consultation. No matter who they choose, they need to consult that person so that person can plan it out to make it as seamless as possible," she says. "They also have to consider what they’re wearing. No matter if it’s a red carpet or a wedding, the dress is the telltale. If the dress is elaborate and has a lot going on, I have the tendency to make the hair more simple. If the dress is simple in the way it’s designed, then we can do a little more whether that’s hair down or something a little bit more elaborate with accessories." 

Classic, Romantic Hairstyles Are Trending 

As for the trends that Kimble says will dominate the upcoming year, it's all about classic, romantic hairstyles. She says these looks are often the best bet since they're quite timeless and won't age out quickly. "It’s either really minimal with the hair or it’s very soft with texture," she says. "Maybe it's wavy or a soft wispy bun. Maybe it's a long curtain bang. It really depends on the dress and what makes that person comfortable, but the requests I've been seeing lately are in that vein." 

If she could choose, she'd stick with a classic half-up, half-down hairstyle. "You get the best of both worlds. It's simple and clean, but at the same time, you have a little something. It’s a look that a lot of people can pull off—a lot of face shapes and body shapes. It’s classic."

And for wedding guests, Kimble has one thing to say: "Join into the fun, like everyone’s doing for the Renaissance [Tour]," she says. "I say do the same for a wedding. Putting a little effort in is what we need to do. It’s a celebration; it’s an event. We should treat it like that."

Let the Season and Climate Dictate Your Hairstyle

Here's a pro tip for any bride who's currently in planning mode: Choose your hairstyle based on the location and timing of the wedding. Kimble says fall and spring are usually more forgiving in terms of temperature and humidity, making a blowout or some other sleek, straight style a good option. While it's possible to create this kind of look in the summer and winter, you have to consider things like wind and humidity (especially if it's an outdoor wedding). 

"A lot of people get married in the summer, and there’s a lot of humidity. You’re going to want to think of hairstyles that are going to last—something pulled back or simple, but if it’s down, choose something looser with a wavy texture." Or go natural. "You can take natural hair and put it up, accessorize it… You can do just about anything with natural hair," she says.

Of course, if you want a sleek hairstyle even though you're getting married in a humid climate, it's possible. "Anything that suits you, you can do it!," Kimble says. "You just have to plan it out accordingly. There’s nothing like your hair frizzing up while the nuptials are happening."

Hair Accessories Are *It*

Wedding hair accessories are controversial. Some people love them; some people avoid them. For Kimble, they're a fun way to add glamour and creativity to a look. "I love hair accessories; I’m such an advocate for hair accessories. When we did our shoot for The Knot, we did some beautiful accessories, from headbands to bows to sparkle. Pearls are always a big accessory whether it's on a headband or on little pins in the hair." 

She also loves wedding hairstyles that incorporate old-fashioned combs that you slip into the hair. "If you want to do a traditional French roll, you could add a beautiful comb," she says. Haircare Should Be a Top Priority

The healthier your hair is, the better it will look on the big day. Kimble says she always talks about haircare in her consultations. "Six months out is a great time to start planning for that," she says. "I recommend conditioning treatments so your hair is shiny and looking healthy." 

If you're closer than six months away from your wedding, don't panic. As Kimble puts it, "It depends on how much damage you have. I recommend good haircare anyway, getting married or not. Do something nice for your hair at least once and month. If you start at three months out? Great. You can get some really nice results in that time." 

Incorporate products like hair masks, serums, and oils into your haircare routine—anything that will boost moisture and shine. "I have an amazing shampoo and conditioner," Kimble says. "It’s definitely hydrating, especially if you have textured hair. It helps keep your hair in great condition."

Oh, and don't do anything drastic right before the wedding. "If you’re going to get your hair colored, plan to do it two to three weeks before so your hair oxidizes," Kimble says. "Even with cuts, you want your hair lived in. I wouldn’t do anything drastic right before the wedding."

But I can assure you that we're not the only ones obsessed with the Prisma. Since its debut on the runway in S/S 23, it has already been spotted on fashion girls, including former Victoria's Secret model Sara Sampaio, British actress Michaela Coel, and musician Dua Lipa. What's made this bag such a crowd-pleaser is its sculptural shape—the sharp angles add visual intrigue while also creating an ultra-spacious interior. If that wasn't enough of a selling point, the bag features an adjustable shoulder strap with minimal hardware, comes in two sizes, and is available in seven colors. All of this is to say that while this bag has had a more low-key launch, it's an item that only the people who get it, will get.

3. Bottega Veneta Andiamo Bag

Between the shift between Alessandro Michele and Sabato De Sarno as the creative director, we saw the house's atelier look to another former legendary director for inspiration. One can attribute this indie label's success solely to Blackwood's dedication to thinking outside the box. 

In the past few years alone, we've seen the luxury label expand from its roots as an accessory brand to a full-out label—with a foray into ready-to-wear, footwear, swimwear, and even eyewear. This ingenuity has kept the brand on the radar of so many (including stars). And while there's always an array of exciting new things coming out of this house, we'd be lying if we didn't say we still love the Kendrick Trunk Bag. Released back in 2021, the box-shaped clutch bag managed to not only attain cult status in a short amount of time but maintain it, too. The appeal surrounding this bag is quite simple: it has a compact shape with an attachable strap available in every possible material imaginable (e.g., stainless steel, rhinestones, pony hair, and satin, to name a few). Often reflected through deconstructed tailoring, sultry silhouttes, and unconventional materials; Porte has managed to build a fashion aesthetic that's truly his own. One which has become synonymous with crafting those "photo-ready vacation looks," as his collections often are inspired by sun-soaked destinations. 

But, while his travel-inspired collections have made him a global phenomenon, his bags ultimately put him on the map. The viral mini bag Le Chiquito was the first Jacquemus bag met with critical acclaim. Considered avant-garde when released in the S/S 18 collection, its playful take on proportions made it one of the most coveted bags among celebrities. Though this bag still undoubtedly has a grip on the fashion girlies, there's a newer bag from the brand vying for the title: Le Bisou. Debuted on the S/S 23 runway, this bag melds art and fashion sublimely. Characterized by its experimental shape, the Le Bisou shoulder bag's silhouette is meant to mimic a pair of luscious lips while also being spacious enough to fit the essentials and easy to carry on the shoulder. If that weren't enough to make you lust after this bag, look at how stars like Kali Uchis and Emma Chamberlin are already donning the style. It may take a while for this bag to reach the massive levels of popularity that the mini Le Chiquito did, but you better believe it will.

8. Khaite Olivia Hobo Bag

But that's only a tiny sliver of what makes this label so damn exciting. In truth, this brand has excelled because of its understated approach to luxury. Never unapproachable, its ready-to-wear collections reimagine everyday staples like knitwear, denim, and outerwear to create a contemporary take on classic American sportswear. And while Khaite's ready-to-wear collections quickly gained the brand notoriety, its accessories aren't to be ignored. 

We first saw Holstein make her foray into handbags, shoes, and belts during New York Fashion Week in 2019. Since then, the brand has released various accessories that have reached cult status, including the Olivia Hobo Bag. Released in S/S 22, the bag exemplifies the house's dedication to pragmatism without sacrificing style. Boasting a slouchy crescent-shaped silhouette with a spacious interior, the bag has come in iterations ranging from an oversized version that slings across the body in a supple suede to medium hand-held versions adorned with crystals. The bag's versatility (both in variations available and styling possibilities) has made it one of the most compelling luxury bags on the market. But if you're still not sold on the Olivia Hobo, consider all the style icons that have worn this bag—from Tracee Ellis Ross to Elsa Hosk. And while his menswear (and later womenswear) collections were what initially led to his meteoric rise, it's his accessories that have cemented him into the cultural canon. Originally launched in 2012, the brand's handbag offering, without a doubt, is the best embodiment of Anderson's commitment to creativity.

Over the years, the luxury label has released its fair share of bags that blew people's minds out of the gate. For example, in F/W 19, a bag shaped like a cap inevitably became a must-have in the street-style scene. More recently, the internet just about lost it when the brand debuted a like-like pigeon clutch in the F/W 22 collection. But possibly the best example of Anderson's penchant for the unconventional is the release of the Bumper Bag in 2022. Its rounded shape draws inspiration from inverted travel pillows, hence the padded tube lining surrounding the bag. While seemingly unconventional, the bag boasts a spacious interior and comes in various colorways, materials, and even sizes. This artful balance between functionality and fashion has made this bag a must-have in the minds of many stars. In the past year, we've seen a slew of celebrities wearing the Bumper Bag, including Dua Lipa, Gabrielle Union, Kylie Jenner, Rina Sawayama, and Naomi Campbell. Although the brand airs on the side of austerity, that does not mean there aren't luxurious elements to be found. In fact, in the smaller details is where this brand's more sumptuous side shines—think: precise tailoring, decadent materials, and evergreen silhouttes. However, it's not just the ready-to-wear items that have this touch of luxury; the accessories do, too. 

More specifically, The Row's handbag offering has become as beloved by insiders as the clothing. Launched back in 2011, the label's offering often consists of timeless styles that often exude an aura of discreet luxury, the Margaux Tote being a prime example. The functional (yet fashionable) carryall debuted in 2018 but has remained relevant because of its clean-cut lines, spacious interior, and subtle logo embossing. Its timeless nature isn't something that's been lost on the celebrity set either; we've seen everyone from Jennifer Lawerence to Kendall Jenner carrying it recently. There are a few inescapable truths in this world: death, taxes, and an unrelenting stream of fashion mess on Twitter.com. 

Earlier this month, high-fashion Twitter—a collective of independent journalists, commentators, designers, and students—was set ablaze by commentator Melissa Michelle's viral thread that examines the current world of celebrity styling. Per Michelle (and the dozens of accounts agreeing with her), there are two types of people in this world: fashion girls and fashion dolls.

Here are the CliffsNotes. Dolls are carefully crafted celebrities whose style relies on aesthetic evolution, working alongside talented teams to dress them up in whatever's cutting edge in the industry. You can usually spot a doll from a mile away depending on what her outfit is at the time. It's often something over-the-top and glamorous based on what type of project she's promoting, whether it be an album, a Hollywood blockbuster, or a specific runway collection. Fashion girls, on the other hand, have a curated, authentic interest in fashion history and style that defines their wardrobe choices, no matter how left field they may be.

As of publishing, Michelle's thread has nearly 100,000 views, and the Beyhive is fighting in the replies—a telltale sign of internet success. While there's endless room for interpretation based on what you define as personal style, the message is clear. If given the opportunity, a great team behind any celebrity will eat every time.

"I noticed a pattern of particular [Hollywood] clients being styled in a certain light versus others having more freedom," Michelle explains. You have fashion girls like Zendaya, whose work with Law Roach is essentially a carte blanche to explore her personal style and tastes. On the other hand, Michelle says, you just have to take a look at Margot Robbie's recent press tour to see the alternative. Enter the dolls—both literally and figuratively. 

The Aussie actress has taken on a larger-than-life, pinkifed glam-bot persona to market one of the most anticipated theatrical releases of the year. She's an adult woman literally cosplaying as an iconic plastic toy, and frankly, I wouldn't have it any other way.

Just like Robbie's Barbie looks, there's been a growing legion of women who make versatility their selling point. For Michelle, the fantasy of fashion dolls doesn't just lie in their outfits—it lies in the hyper-aspirational, extravagant life they're trying to sell you. Case in point, two of the world's most successful women are the definition of dolls, per Michelle: Beyoncé and Kim Kardashian

"The women considered fashion dolls in my book are playing dress-up. Not a hair is out of place. It's a bit more curated and specific. Even that's a compliment. It's not a drag!" Michelle goes on to say, pulling up her viral Twitter thread when we get on the phone. It's important to note the use of the word "compliment." Given the number of people pressed in Michelle's Twitter replies, the 23-year-old isn't trying to get herself in any more internet beef with messy stans.

In today's hyper-evolving, digital-first world, she has a point. A celebrity or influencer who can easily adapt to certain aesthetics and eras is quite a successful one, especially if they're convincing enough to sell you on a rebrand. Jennie from Blackpink, one of the dolls Michelle particularly admires, went from 2010s-era dip-dyed hair and neon arm warmers to being the poster child for Virginie Viard's romance-fueled Chanel. If that isn't range, I don't know what is. 

"There's a polished aspect [of dolls], where you want to present yourself a certain way. It works perfectly for some people for marketing purposes," Michelle says. Just look at Beyoncé's recent costumes, for example, on her Renaissance World Tour. The singer has taken up futuristic, chrome, and surrealist fashion elements to enhance her disco house–infused concert experience, aided by stylists Shiona Turini, KJ Moody, and Julia Sarr-Jamois.

Marketability and fashion can only get you so far, especially when trying to make an outfit look more like a choice and not a paid campaign. Sometimes, Michelle suggests, it's important for stylists to acknowledge their client's personal preferences in a thoughtful way. If not, they can start to feel like a walking ad. "I'm sure even some stylists have deals with brands [telling their clients] you have to wear this with the bag, the shoes, the sunglasses, and you can't switch anything up. It's an unfortunate case," she says.

There have been times when I've gotten on the internet and felt that the heydey of well-crafted starlet styling happened years ago when glitz and glamor on red carpets corresponded more with personal choices rather than contractual obligations. Although some celebrities may only have a list of garments they can pull from a show based on their partnerships, the most versed stylists are able to craft a look that feels fresh and authentic to the talent they're working with. In the case of Gen Z–focused stylist Tabitha Sanchez, a star's accessories, hair, and makeup can really showcase their true personality. 

"In an ideal world, everyone can mix and match and have fun and really showcase their personal style, but the conversation is a lot more nuanced than that. [The dolls showcased] are being dressed by designers for particular events," Sanchez tells Who What Wear. She's a fan of the Twitter thread, though. "Whenever clients of mine have to wear a particular designer, I like to have them look at the runway show or lookbooks as well to see what stands out to them, and then I'll do the same, and we'll see where we overlap and go from there," she says.

Unsurprisingly, when talking to Sanchez, I learn that the majority of her clients take inspiration from the other side of the aisle, the fashion girls that Michelle referred to in her viral thread. "My clients almost always have the same style references: Bella Hadid, Sav Hudson, Linmick, Chloe Cherry—cool girls who, when you look at their outfits, always have something a little off that doesn't make sense, but they just make it work," Sanchez explains. Men's boxers as shorts, hot pink feather-trimmed jackets, and gas-station sunglasses are all on the menu. "I've learned the hard way that there's aspirational versus attainable and realistic. Those girls are all what I'd call true fashion girls who really just wear whatever they want."

The age-old tale of the zany, sexy, weird-dressed starlet isn't a product of a social media age, although it feels like it. Whether or not a fashion girl actually works with stylists, you can tell that her bottom line is simply caring about the clothes. As Michelle puts it in her Twitter thread and Clothes Minded Substack newsletter, these women are the actual ones to watch for: "A real fashion girl can mix her personal style with avant-garde pieces and even couture while still maintaining her personal identity. In fact, that is the leading factor in their wardrobe choices." The poster children behind the movement? Dua Lipa, Zendaya, and Chloë Sevigny to name a few. But let's be honest. The multi-hyphenate has been everyone's favorite front-row staple since early on in her career, teaming up with stylist and Interview Magazine Editor in Chief Mel Ottenberg and later Jahleel Weaver to take her to the next level. In the eyes of Michelle, Rihanna is the blueprint of what it means to be a fashion girl. The Barbados native's genuine style blends seamlessly with her personality. It's never felt like a farce put on for shock value when Rihanna walks out of her apartment with jeans three sizes too big or a giant red heart—it just feels like her.

"[Fashion girls] could put together anything that comes to their imagination and make it their own and make it really fun and exciting," Michelle explains. She goes on to reference new-age supermodels Paloma Elsesser and Anok Yai: "They mix and match themes so effortlessly. If you're someone that can put on a fur coat, some boots, and a pair of cute vintage Tom Ford pants, you're that girl."

While the obvious way to differentiate the two groups is whether or not they're working with a stylist on a daily basis, it's also vital to acknowledge fashion girls, for the most part, know where their clothes are coming from. For most of the figures in the latter camp, it's largely because they live and breathe fashion. "If they're on a red carpet and have answers to questions like 'Where does this gown come from?' or 'What's the story behind it?' they know their stuff," Michelle adds. It's not enough to be dressed from head to toe in an archival look; you have to realize the significance too. 

For the last few years, a magnifying glass has been held up to the evolving world of client-stylist-brand relationships, with every year promising an exciting rebrand of one of our favorites. Anne Hathway, Jennifer Lawrence, Cardi B, and Hailey Bieber are all women whose increased style relevancy has come from a well-connected team providing their clients with the latest and greatest in the fashion industry—whether it be via brand partnerships or otherwise. You can debate who fits into either category easily, but at the end of the day, stylists and their A-list clients are simply working within a framework of fast-paced aesthetic choices. One day you're in, and the next you're out, and all that's left to wonder is the following. If a celebrity's style is manufactured by a well-resourced team and millions of dollars, does it really count as a reflection of a star's great taste? Maybe. 

Michelle puts it best at the end of our call: For celebrities, a win is a win, and a bag is a bag. Is there anything more to being a fashion girl or doll than sitting around with the world's best garments at your feet, thinking about what you want to wear next? If only we could all be so lucky.

We study iconic makeup looks like it's nobody's business—that's no secret. What we have been gatekeeping a bit, however, is how easy some of the biggest stars' looks are to re-create using products you already have at home. The WWW beauty team in particular loves to look back on the pop culture icons of our time and their contributions to the beauty world. Each of us felt inspired by one particular celebrity's look and re-created a version of it using our own handy makeup collection. It was surprisingly easy to find items to use quickly and almost all of the items we used are under the $50 mark. For each iconic look, keep scrolling. We've shared how they turned out and the exact products we used for each.

I'm not usually one to think I was born at the wrong time, but I will say that I've always felt a special connection to the '70s. The music of Fleetwood Mac, Elton John, Joy Division, Led Zeppelin, and many more solidified this for me, but there's one particular type of music I would have loved to experience the rise of firsthand: disco. That's why I was drawn to this particular look sported by Foxxy Cleopatra (played by Beyoncé) in Austin Powers in Goldmember. Cleopatra took disco glam to a whole new level by sporting larger-than-life hair, gold shadow for days, and outfits I still think about at least once a day.

I put my own spin on her look by adding a couple of $5 jewels from the drugstore to it, but other than that, it was surprisingly simple to create with just one gold shadow layered up to my brow area. I couldn't find the exact gems I used for this particular look, but I've included some top-notch ones below that will still get the job done.

If you're like me, you entered the Ticketmaster Hunger Games for Beyoncé's Renaissance World Tour tickets. I woke up at 3:30 a.m. (twice) to secure tickets in Europe. Was I exhausted and stressed? Yep. But after waiting in queues with over 22,000 people (and counting), I was lucky enough to secure Club Renaissance tickets! Hundreds of other people and I will be dancing the night away because there are no seats. Suffice to say, I will undoubtedly be wearing sensible shoes and may need an ice bath afterward. However, when it comes to my makeup, I plan on going all out. 

I've always loved the simple yet glam vibe of Beyoncé's makeup. (I'm still especially obsessed with her Coachella look—the clean skin and glitter lid are just *chef's kiss*.) So, of course, I did a deep dive to find out how her makeup artist, Sir John, has created looks that pop off the stage and last through hours of dancing and performing. Additionally, I tapped a few makeup artists to walk me through how to get our beauty looks ready for the tour with a few Beyoncé tried-and-true beauty staples as the inspiration. Keep scrolling!

Beyoncé Makeup Staple #1: Fresh Skin

The ensemble cast for the superstar seems to be fresh skin, an impactful lash, a glitter lid, and a liner. Of course, as a girl with hyperpigmentation, getting skin like Beyoncé's seems impossible. However, Erin Lee Smith, beauty director and in-house artist for lifestyle-and-fashion boutique ByGeorge, says a less-is-more application—with a light hand and the right tools—can get us there. First, there's skin prep. Typically, you'd start with a moisturizer, but in interviews, Sir John says he skips the moisturizer and goes straight to primer when prepping skin for concerts. 

Like my foundation and concealer, I tend to over-apply even primer. However, Smith says, "You don't need much. Just a pump or two." The key to primer doing its job well is letting it dry completely before applying your foundation. A foundation with long-wear technology is essential for long-lasting looks that stand up to dancing (and the occasional happy scream).

For a seamless, lightweight foundation application that doesn't feel or look heavy, Smith says to first apply foundation with a foundation brush and then set it with a Beautyblender ($20). "You can really press in the product with a Beautyblender," she tells us. "Just make sure it has a little moisture to it. You want the blender to be bouncy." 

As for concealing blemishes and hyperpigmentation, Smith recommends layering a concealer that matches your skin tone on top. "You don't want to put a spotlight on the blemish by using a color that is lighter than your face." For application, she uses a small brush to cover the blemish with concealer and lightly powders to set it. 

As you're evening out your skin tone, you may think it's time to bake. Nope. In interviews, Sir John says he doesn't bake; he cooks. His reasoning? Too much powder can actually age the skin. Instead, he uses a light dusting of loose powder to absorb the oil in the foundation, concealer, and T-zone. Beyoncé Makeup Staple #2: Glittery Cat Eyes 

Let's talk eyes. After some additional research, I got the deets on what Sir John applied for the Coachella look I have been obsessed with for years. He used two liners to line Beyoncé's eyes: a liquid liner on the top lid and a brown liner on the bottom. Of course, no matter what liner you use for your looks, keep a dry cotton bud on standby to clean up any mistakes. 

For the glitter lid, Lemonhead.LA's Spacepaste in Houdini was applied across the entire lid with Dirty Penny added to the center. For a more colorful Renaissance-inspired look, Lemonhead.LA founder Megan Dugan, told me how to layer the brand's signature glitter concentrates. First, apply Dirty Penny as a liner. Next, fade the pigment upward with Spacejam in Paradise Cove and highlight the corners of your eyes with Sheer Glow Jam Electric Daze. For application, Dugan recommend using a flat eye shadow brush, but she says you can also use your fingers or a blending brush for a more fanned out look.

And we can't forget about the lashes. Smith is a big fan of Loveseen's lashes. I am now, too, because they're crafted for people like me who find it challenging to apply falsies. "Loveseen lashes have a clear band that holds the individual hairs together," Smith tells us. "The clear band not only gives a more natural finish but also won't show that you may have applied the strip a little crooked." Additionally, if you have sensitive eyes like me, they feel as natural as they look (and you can reuse them).

Beyoncé Makeup Staple #3: Bright Pops of Color on the Lips and Face

Adding bright, full hues to the face can be daunting. But Danessa Myricks, makeup artist and founder of Danessa Myricks Beauty, says leaning into monochromatic colors makes the process easier. "Using the same color all over the face in varying intensities is an easy way to create a look that is both dynamic and cohesive," she tells me. 

Additionally, she recommends using long-wear cream products to create a highly pigmented look. "I love cream products as they are both easy to blend and vary in intensity," she shares. She recommends Colorfix in shades like Latte or Valentine to re-create some of Beyoncé's past looks at home since the formula is waterproof and can last up to 24 hours.

As you apply any pops of color to the face, she recommends starting with minimal product and then slowly building up. "Begin the placement of color in the area where you want the boldest intensity," she explains. "For example, you may begin your blush application at the apple of the cheek and then blend upward and outward to diffuse color if the intent is to have a bold cheek."

For a more lifted effect, she says to add more color to the temples. "In this case, your first tap would be in the temple area and then blend down toward the apples," she adds. And best of all, you can do all of this with your fingers, as she shares this is the best way to control the product. If you do opt to use tools, Myricks says, "fluffy brushes with longer hairs will offer a more diffused expression of color while denser brushes with shorter hairs will apply a bolder expression of color."

Beyoncé Makeup Staple #4: Edgy, Metallic Lips

Metallics are always in, and it's also another look Beyoncé donned for her Renaissance album art. But how do we select an eye shadow and lip color combination that works together? L.A.-based makeup artist Carol Park says to choose colors in the same color family. "For example, if you are applying a darker plum metallic on the lips, balance it out with a rose plum metallic on the eyes," she explains.

Additionally, she notes using colors that are complementary on the color wheel, like gold and purple, are great options. "A color combination I used recently to create a metallic lip was using the Milani Stay Put Lip Longwear Lipstick in Go Off for a beautiful dark-plum base and then applied the Adela May Beauty Metallic Plum Eye Shadow on top using a rounded flat brush. The dark-plum base created the most perfect backdrop for the plum metallic shimmers to stand out."

Although I've been a brunette my entire life, as soon as the sun makes an appearance and the temperature soars, I'm always tempted to go lighter. I usually opt for balayage or highlights to give my summer hair colour some dimension, but each summer I feel a jolt of excitement of going just a little bit blonder. In fact, hairdressers and colourists often tell me that once you dabble with blonde, you never look back. However, choosing the right shade of blonde can be an overwhelming decision. So we enlisted the help of Jordanna Cobella, creative director of Cobella Salon and Wella Professionals craft expert, to talk us through blonde hair. What blonde hair colour suits me?

"When choosing the right shade of blonde, it's important to consider your skin tone, its undertone, and also your eye colour," says Cobella. "For people with cooler skin tones, ashier, cool-toned blonde shades suit them best. For warm skin tones, I recommend golden, honey-toned shades." It's also important to consider the maintenance that comes with going blonde. Depending on your hair colour and the colour application method that your hair colourist uses, you may need regular salon appointments to keep your hair colour looking its best. You'll also want to consider how much heat styling you use. "Before going blonde, consider your hair's current condition. Can it withstand going blonde? Think about your lifestyle. Going blonde can require regular upkeep to ensure it looks its best, with hair treatments or salon visits to liven up your blonde," she says.

To best prepare your hair for blonde, Cobella recommends some home haircare. "To make sure your hair is at its healthiest before going blonde, apply regular hair treatments, such as hair masks and oils. There are very few artists in the world who have won an EGOT—Whoppi Goldberg is one of them. Goldberg is the first-ever African American to be nominated for Best Actress and Best Supporting Actress (which she won in ‘91 for her performance in Ghost). Her look for the 1991 Academy Awards encompassed the type of popular sequinned column dresses that were everywhere during the late ‘80s and early ‘90s, making it historic in and of itself.

Material girls, this is your look.

Nicole Kidman’s stunning yellow Christian Dior Couture gown put newly appointed John Galliano on the map and couture on the carpet, elevating both the fashion industry’s profile in Hollywood and the Oscars red carpet for years to come.

At the time of their debuts on the carpet, many of the most iconic Oscar looks were met with either fanfare or outright disgust. For Gwyneth Paltrow’s 1999 bubblegum-pink Ralph Lauren gown with £140,000 worth of Harry Winston diamonds, it was the latter. Why anyone wouldn’t love this look, we’re not sure, but does it matter? She took home the Best Actress award for her role in Shakespeare in Love and served one of the most remembered looks to date.

WEAR: Dior suit; fedora; diamond-studded Ray-Bans

The fashion critics in ‘99 were particularly harsh on Oscars red carpet looks, including Celine Dion’s white Dior satin pantsuit by John Galliano, which she wore styled backward. Little did they know, this would become one of her most iconic looks ever and one of the most-celebrated Academy Awards looks of all time. Guess it pays to think outside the box (or just to be Celine Dion).

Something must have been in the water at the 1999 Academy Awards because it served us some serious looks, particularly this two-piece Chanel outfit from Uma Thurman. Of course, it wasn’t her first time stealing the red carpet (she championed a silk lavender Prada dress in ‘94), but it’s an outfit that has left many in their feelings.

While there are red carpet looks that are timeless, others, like a fine wine, take time to come into their own—that’s the case with Cameron Diaz’s ensemble for the 2000 Oscars. At the time, it could have been considered too risqué, but this see-through Versace gown, in many ways, was a precursor to the beloved naked dresses celebrities wear today.

Salma Hayek has donned some of the chicest Oscars red carpet looks over the years, but none are quite as lovely as her ‘00s ceremony gown. Encapsulating Hollywood glamour into a singular gown isn’t easy, but that’s precisely what Donatella Versace did with the stunning floor-length gold gown worn by Kate Hudson in ‘03. Every detail, from the hand-sewn embroidery to the 14k gold lining, on the effervescent Hudson makes this look worthy of its own award.

Charlize Theron’s performance in the film Monster isn’t the only thing worthy of an Oscar. Her red carpet look for the ‘04 ceremony is, too. Tom Ford designed the stunning strappy, bedazzled Gucci gown, and the pairing of Theron’s wavy hairdo and bleached eyebrows makes this a look we can’t forget.

What makes the Oscars red carpet unique is that the ensembles range from classic to cutting-edge at every ceremony. I have yet to see an Atelier Versace red carpet look I did not love—Penelope Cruz’s ‘07 Oscar Awards ensemble is high up there for me. What’s fantastic about this look is that the pale-pink strapless gown has this stunning ruched bodice and full feather skirt, making it a dreamy, princess-like look that could only be embodied by Cruz herself.

WHO: Angelina Jolie 

WHAT: 2009 Academy Awards

WEAR: Elie Saab gown; emerald earrings 

My love for Angelina Jolie was cemented by her 2009 Oscars red carpet look. While some critics may consider the 2012 black high-slit Atelier Versace gown her best look of all time, I’ll go to bat for this look. Yes, the Elie Saab gown stole my heart, but Jolie’s stunning emerald earrings are what sealed the deal—the dramatic colour contrast, the size, and her damn cheekbones just make this look too divine for humanity.

WHO: Zoe Saldana 

WHAT: 2010 Academy Awards

WEAR: Givenchy Couture gown

Zoe Saldana’s 2010 Oscars red carpet look is lauded as one of the best looks of all time (for a good reason). While the star was nominated for the film Avatar that year, it’s her dress that was the genuinely out-of-this-world thing—the sequins and ombré tulle make this Givenchy Couture gown designed by Riccardo Tisci a celestial piece of Oscars history.

While Rooney Mara’s red carpet style may appear to be simple from far away, the intricate details, textures, and fit say otherwise. Take, for example, her 2012 Oscars red carpet look. To the objective on-looker, she’s wearing a simple white gown, but for the fashion crowd, we know that this Givenchy couture was custom-made by Riccardo Tisci with pearl-coloured lace.

Meryl Streep stirred up the whole pot at the 2012 Academy Awards—and not just because she won Best Actress for her performance as Margaret Thatcher in The Iron Lady. Her choice of Lanvin garnered considerable discussion among the industry not just because people were unsure about the full-gold look but also because Streep selected Lanvin over Chanel for the ceremony. No matter what the tea is, this look is one we’ll be talking about for years to come.

If you were to take a time machine back to the 2013 Oscars, you’d know that the buzz was all about Jennifer Lawerence and Anne Hathaway. Lawrence’s fall up the stairs to her acceptance speech and Hathaway’s "controversial” dress were the talk of the town. But the attention should have been focused on how they both handled the night with such grace (which is easy to do when you’re wearing Dior or Prada) and took away Oscars, too.

Genuinely speaking, there is not a more iconic Oscars red carpet moment in recent history than Lupita Nyong’o’s 2014 ensemble. What made this look historic (other than her win of Best Supporting Actress that year) was this crystal-pleated, powder-blue, deep V-neck Prada gown. We could stare at this look forever.

WEAR: Zuhair Murad Couture dress; white fur. 

It’s no secret that Jennifer Lopez has her fair share of iconic looks; however, none quite hold the same place in my heart as her 2015 Oscars After-Party outfit. Yes, her Ellie Saab gown for the ceremony was stunning, but nothing quite distills the "J.Lo aesthetic” like this full-length sequin Zuhair Murad Couture dress and white fur stole. My only question is, does love not cost a thing? Because this gown sure looks like a million bucks.

Let it be stated for the internet records that Emma Stone is secretly that girl who always brings her A game to the red carpet. Case in point: the green floor-length, high-slit, and sequinned Elie Saab gown she wore to the 2015 Academy Awards. This isn’t a bad look; it’s a super-bad look if you catch my drift.

If I could frame this photo of Beyoncé and Solange Knowles dancing at the 2015 Vanity Fair Oscars Party, I would. Does that make me an obsessive member of the Bey-hive? Sure. But the Knowles sisters never fail to serve a look—these matching white gowns are proof.

Whenever I see another red carpet look from the one-and-only Jane Fonda, I always pray that I can look as fabulous as her when I grow up. Of course, it doesn’t hurt to be able to wear a full-sequin Zuhair Murad Haute Couture jumpsuit, but then again, it’s Jane Fonda, and no one else can serve a red carpet look like her.

WHO: Kerry Washington

WHAT: 2016 Academy Awards

WEAR: Atelier Versace gown; Schutz shoes

Whether you’re a Scandal fan or just a Kerry Washington stan, the power of the ensemble she wore to the 2016 Oscars can not be understated. She slayed that carpet like a gladiator in head-to-toe (the ponytail, the Atelier Versace gown with a leather bodice and a high-slit, and the see-through Schutz heels) perfection.

There’s not a day that goes by that I don’t think about the incredible celebrity and stylist pairing that is Zendaya and Law Roach. The style companions have served us some of the most iconic red carpet looks to date, including this stunning floor-length, off-the-shoulder, chocolate-brown Giambattista Valli number. Zendaya, why do you do this to me?

WHO: Saoirse Ronan

WHAT: 2018 Academy Awards 

WEAR: Calvin Klein dress; Christian Louboutin shoes; Cartier jewelry

Compared to the over-the-top numbers the Oscars red carpet has seen in the past, Saoirse Ronan’s strapless pink Calvin Klein dress isn’t overly exuberant. But the oversize bow in the back makes this a lesson in understated elegance. This look could have been worn to the Oscars in the ‘50s or could easily make a statement well into the future. That’s what makes it iconic.

The stunning custom Vivienne Westwood dress with a corset bodice and a frayed hem had her looking like a supermodel.

The Oscars red carpet hasn’t always been known to host the most stand-out looks from nominated actors and attendees, but every once in a while, we’re blessed with a few men who aren’t afraid to go bold. It doesn’t get bolder than actor and style icon Billy Porter—who else could pull off a Christian Siriano tuxedo dress? This is an Oscars red carpet look we’ll be talking about for years to come.

WHO: Gemma Chan

WHAT: 2019 Academy Awards

WEAR: Valentino Haute Couture dress; Bvlgari jewellery; Jimmy Choo shoes 

No one has ever entirely made a case for hot pink on the Oscars red carpet like Gemma Chan. Her voluminous Valentino Haute Couture gown is something I stare at when I feel I need a reminder that there are, indeed, beautiful things in the world.

The 2019 Academy Awards was a huge night for Regina King, as she not only won Best Supporting Actress for the film If Beale Street Could Talk, but she also donned one of her best red carpet looks to date. Of course, King fans are well aware that she’s often one of the most stylish characters on-screen, but the stunning white Oscar de la Renta gown paired with matching Christian Louboutin shoes proved she’s a style icon IRL, too.

WHO: Lady Gaga

WHAT: 2019 Academy Awards

WEAR: Alexander McQueen dress; Tiffany & Co. jewellery

If you weren’t already a self-proclaimed Little Monster (like myself), the 2019 Oscars could have felt as if a star was born that evening. Of course, real Lady Gaga fans know she’s served iconic looks for years; her Oscar win (for best original song), the Alexander McQueen dress, and the yellow Tiffany & Co. necklace had her shinin’ like never before.

WHO: Janelle Monáe

WHAT: 2020 Academy Awards

WEAR: Ralph Lauren custom evening dress; Forevermark jewellery

I’ve said it before, and I’ll repeat it: Janelle Monáe does not play when it comes to her style. No gown better encompasses that ethos than the crystal-lacquered silk lamé, tulle mesh Ralph Lauren gown—featuring a draped hood and an open back—she wore to the 2020 Oscars. It took over 600 hours of handwork to embroider 168,000 Swarovski crystals on the dress, making it a masterpiece we won’t forget.

WHO: Timothée Chalamet and Margot Robbie

WHAT: 2020 Academy Awards

WEAR: On Timothée Chalamet: Prada jacket and trousers; Cartier Tradition brooch

If you know, you know that Timothée Chalamet is never one to shy away from serving a look. (He’ll wear men’s jewellery with ease.) Of course, that fearlessness is sometimes met with mass critique, most recently including strong feelings around his 2020 Oscars outfit. Instead of sticking to a tuxedo, he opted for an anti-suit: a Prada Re-Nylon gabardine jacket with satin racing stripes and matching Prada Re-Nylon trousers over a white poplin shirt. He finished the look with a Cartier Tradition brooch with 18k white gold, platinum, rubies, and diamonds. While the critics may not have been here for it, I have a feeling this look will go down in history as ushering in a new way for men to approach their Oscars red carpet looks.

One person can bring life or death by serving a look, and that’s no other than Grey’s Anatomy and Killing Eve star Sandra Oh. Her 2020 Vanity Fair Oscars Party look (a grey, floor-length, sequinned, feather-embellished, deep V-neck Cong Tri dress) had me in shambles.

By now, you know that a list of the best Oscars looks of all time is subjective and ever-changing in the face of trends. Occasionally, there are hidden gems—like this Oscar de la Renta look Janet Mock wore to the Vanity Fair Oscars Party—that go unnoticed. But with time, reflection, and a whole lot of sequins, we’re able to see that the best Oscars looks of all time strike the perfect balance between being timeless and being of that time period. How to know if something can be considered stylish is in the eye of the beholder, I guess, but for now, I’ll keep staring at these looks.

If you were to survey editors, you’d find that everyone has their own favorite aspect of their job. Some love scouring Nordstrom for the best new arrivals, and some love spotting a micro-trend before it blows up. For me, there’s nothing I love more than discovering new brands, especially when they’re Black owned. Don’t get me wrong. I’m always down for digging through a sale section or test-driving a new outfit for date night, but there’s something so magical about supporting Black talent in the fashion industry. It can be daunting for anyone to break into the fashion industry, but to launch your label as a person of color is even more challenging. It has been reported that less than 47% of financing applications filed by African American business owners get approved. Additionally, in the last two years, many major retailers only recently signed onto the Fifteen Percent Pledge to ensure they were buying wholesale ready-to-wear and accessories from Black-owned fashion brands. 

Basically, it’s rough out here. And while there are some great organizations, retailers, and leaders paving the way for future Black creatives, the easiest way we can continue to advocate for and support rising talent is by buying their work. Buying a pair of shoes may not solve all the world’s systemic problems, but it’s a start. So ahead, I’ve rounded up 19 Black-owned shoe brands to shop year-round because buying from Black designers never goes out of style.

Brother Vellies

Do you know how we were just talking about the Fifteen Percent Pledge? Aurora James founded her accessory label, Brother Vellies, long before she started the nonprofit organization. The two-time award-winning CDFA designer has become beloved in the industry not only for her continued commitment to championing fellow Black artists but also for her artisanal shoes and handbags. You feel great knowing all the shoes are as ethical as they are stylish.

Chelsea Paris

It’s no secret that building a fashion brand can take years. Some designers will take a hiatus from the hustle and bustle, only to never really return full blast. But that was not the case for the founder of Chelsea Paris, Theresa Ebagua. While she founded her namesake luxury footwear brand in 2012, the designer took a little hiatus until 2020. This served her well because, since then, her minimal yet eye-catching designs have garnered a cult following among the fashion set. If I were to name someone who embodies the phrase "back and better than ever,” it’s for sure Ebagua.

As an editor, I’m lucky enough to have the chance to occasionally meet the designers behind a label. (It’s something I cherish immensely.) So when I met Amina Means, the designer behind the 4-year-old luxury footwear brand Nalebe, I was awestruck. First off, Means herself is a gregarious force of nature, but her shoes? They’re next-level. Kendall Miles Designs

Some shoe brands have the capacity to make me cough up all my money, and Kendall Miles Designs is one of those brands. The namesake accessory label was founded in 2015 by the Chicago-born, New York City–based designer after she studied formal footwear training at Arsutoria School in Milan, Italy. Miles’s clear fusion of cities and craftsmanship shines through in sandals with wraparound faux-fur straps, mules embellished with feathers, and bright patent pumps. Basically, she’s out here creating for the city girls. If I’m even remotely psychic, every Angeleno, New Yorker, and Parisian will be donning these shoes soon.

Jessica Rich

Scroll through the Instagram feeds of Kim Kardashian, Jennifer Lopez, Cardi B, and Saweetie, and there will be one brand they’re all wearing. It just so happens to be Jessica Rich’s namesake shoe label. Founding her brand in 2015, the self-taught designer has become beloved among celebrities for her eye-catching use of PVC and platforms, but what makes her truly unique is her role as a trailblazer in the industry. She was not only one of the first Black shoe designers to be sold in Bloomingdale's, but she recently was also a part of The Black Designers fund, which was created to help fellow creatives receive the financial capital they need for their businesses. Basically, Rich is out here shattering glass ceilings with stilettos.

AM: PM

The first time I spotted a pair of AM: PM shoes, I was scrolling through Instagram, and my heart actually stopped. Maybe that sounds dramatic, but once you see the brand’s impeccable shoes, you get it. You’d think designs like pony-hair thong sandals and satin mules with a sculptural heel would be enough to make a girl fall in love, but for me, it came down to the fact that it’s a Black-owned shoe brand. In 2020, Edna Konadu founded the footwear label out of a desire to create affordable, contemporary, comfortable heels. And while it seems risky to start a business amid a global pandemic, Konadu benefited from the jump, as her shoes went viral practically overnight. This goes to show that leaping (whether it’s starting a brand or buying some shoes) pays off.

Téjahn Burnett

Self-taught designers always bring the spice to an otherwise traditional craft, and such is the case with Canadian Jamaican designer Téjahn Burnett. After taking roles in everything from finance to communications, she spent years researching various aspects of producing footwear, financing for businesses, and marketing so that she could found her namesake label in 2018. Burnett’s dedication to learning every aspect of the business is felt through the details applied to her footwear (e.g., sandals embellished with cowrie shells). It’s this attention to detail that makes her brand one watch and shop for.

Løci

Long before sneaker culture became a trend, Black people were championing, buying, and donning every sneaker drop. And while sneakers are a universal staple for everyone, there are still some brands that are doing it for the culture—like the Black-owned, London-based brand Løci. Founded by Emmanuel Eribo in 2021, the vegan sneaker label isn’t your typical shoe brand. It centers sustainability in every aspect of the business, from sourcing degradable and pragmatic materials such as cork, bamboo, and recycled plastic for the shoes to donating 10% of all its proceeds to helping keep the ocean clean. Løci is leading the charge in making the sneaker industry more sustainable and accountable.

Arch NYC

Every fashion insider knows that no shoe collection is complete without at least one pair of shoes known as the "conversation starter.” This fact compelled Harlem-based designer Jazmin Veney to launch her footwear brand, Arch NYC, in 2018. With a formal background in fashion marketing, it makes sense that Veney’s pieces speak for themselves. The shoes often feature bold design elements like saturated tones, ruching, and pony hair. Arch’s shoes are what you wear when you want to be the belle of the ball.

Hanifa

Anyone who lives to discover either Black-owned or indie brands has likely heard of Hanifa. Founded in 2012 by Anifa Mvuemba, the brand’s ready-to-wear collections have become beloved for the designer’s use of bright hues, animal prints, and luxurious knits. But when the brand announced the launch of shoes last fall, the fashion girlies and guys lost it (for a good reason). The brand’s first drop featured a stunning knee-high boot style and sandals, and it’s safe to say that Hanifa’s entry into footwear is something you’ll want to keep tabs on.

Rebecca Allen

Not all designers have a traditional background in fashion; some of the best talents come from some of the most unlikely places. This fact rings true for footwear designer Rebecca Allen, the former VP of Goldman Sachs. After working in finance for years, the creative found herself frustrated with the lack of polished nude footwear for women of color, so she founded her namesake brand in 2018. The brand’s ethos is about crafting classic footwear for women of all shades.

Good American

At first glance, you may think you know everything you need to know about the brand Good American. In fact, you might have spotted Khloé Kardashian in a campaign and called it a day. But what many might not know is that the brand was co-founded by Emma Grede. The Black British designer decided to launch the brand with Kardashian after realizing the lack of flattering and size-inclusive denim offerings in the market back in 2016. The brand’s inclusive ethos is embedded into every aspect of its work, including its ready-to-wear, swimwear, and footwear. With fun, trendy shoes available in sizes 4 to 14, the brand is a reminder that great style has no size limit.

Kahmune

Any woman of color can most likely relate to the struggle of searching for products that match your skin tone—whether it’s a pair of nude pumps or an exact-match foundation. This lack of inclusivity led Ghanaian American designer Jamela Acheampong to found her brand. After literally painting a white shoe her own skin tone back in 2016, she got the idea to launch Kahmune, a collection of true-nude shoes. Since then, the brand has garnered a following of celebrity clients such as Lupita Nyong'o and retail deals with brands such as Shopbop, proving that women just want great shoes.

Sunni Sunni

At times, the footwear industry can be dogmatic. Traditional ways of producing shoes, designing shoes, and even launching your label have left a lot of great talent out of the spotlight. But D.C. designer Taylor Dixon has found his light. The self-taught designer worked as a production coordinator for Ralph Lauren and apprenticed with a shoe cobbler before launching his genderless label, Sunni Sunni, in 2012. Since then, he’s been able to stand on his own two feet on account of the fact that his handcrafted footwear always strikes the perfect balance between trendy and timeless, feminine and masculine. It’s Sunni’s chic shoes that have caught the attention of power couples like Gabrielle Union and Dwyane Wade, but what keeps this designer in the spotlight is his continued dedication to creating outside of the typical shoe box.

Keeyahri

Confession: I have found some of my favorite rising Black-owned fashion brands through Beyoncé’s site, and Keeyahri is one of them. Founded by Keya Martin in 2018, the buzzy luxury footwear brand has become known not just because of how many celebrities it’s been spotted on (though, that helps) but also for its one-of-a-kind sculptural heels. Despite her brand only being 2 years old, Martin’s fresh approach to design led her to get financed by and picked up by Nordstrom. So basically, you’re going to want to keep all eyes on Keeyahri’s work because it has all the trappings of making the next It shoes.

Nicolette Nichelle

I occasionally discover some of the best new brands from our Who What Wear readers, which was very much the case for the Black-owned footwear brand Nn. Founded by Houston-based designer Nicolette Nichelle in 2019, the brand began as a passion project for adding a fun DIY flair to shoes she already owned. Since the brand’s launch, her work has started to catch the attention of micro-influencers for its eclectic designs, like rhinestone-embellished, cloud-shaped knee-high boots and gold strappy sandals with cannabis emblems. It’s safe to say you better keep your sights on this brand because it’s only a matter of time before it goes viral.

Titi Adesa

They say that some of the best things in life are surprises. This seems to be valid for footwear designer Titi Adesa. Raised in Nigeria, the London-based designer began her career in medicine but decided to pivot into fashion. After studying at Cordwainers at the London College of Fashion and traveling to Italy to learn shoemaking, she decided to launch her namesake label in August 2019. Little did she know she’d be starting a family and that a pandemic would begin shortly after. Despite all the surprises, Adesa has garnered a solid fan base that includes celebrities such as Emily Blunt and Jennifer Hudson, and she earned the Emerging Talent Award at the 35th annual FN Achievement Awards. If the designer’s quick rise in the industry wasn’t enough to keep us on our toes, her ability to add elements of surprise and delight into her designs (e.g., pumps with laser-cut topline leather and mules with rainbow mesh) certainly makes her one to watch.

Salone Monet

If you’re anything like me, you may have had an obsession with the fictional character Olivia Pope from Scandal at some point. Everything about her polished style—from her Prada tote to her wrap coat to her pointed heels—screamed "power.” And if the show were still on-air today, there’s no doubt she’d be donning a pair of Salone Monet heels. This Black-owned shoe brand was founded in 2018 after Monet worked in political PR and realized the lack of inclusive nude shoes in the fashion industry. Since launching her business, she’s become a force in the industry. She’s a founding member of the CFDA and Bethann Hardison Designers Hub and was awarded the Harlem's Fashion Row Icon 360 award in 2020. While Monet has built a following in and out of the industry, her true power hasn’t come from celebrity placements or accolades. It comes from creating shoes that women of color can put their best foot forward in.

Voyetté

Editors are always searching for the next big brand, and I can, without a doubt, tell you that it’s going to be Voyetté. Voyetté Lee founded the Miami-based luxury shoe brand in 2019. And despite being new to the shoe game, the brand’s sultry styles have been spotted on everyone from Keke Palmer to Tinashe. If that’s not enough to sell you on why this shoe brand will blow up, look to the designer’s use of crystals, feathers, and mesh to create perfect pairs of statement shoes. If you think about the shoes that have dominated the fashion set’s Instagram feeds and compare them to the incredible work of Voyetté, then you can see this brand is poised to take over soon. And if it doesn’t, I’ll personally be revolting.

If you want to see Beyoncé's outfit for the Super Bowl, which took place in L.A. yesterday and was a great success for its hometown team, there's pretty much just one place to see it: her Instagram feed. Beyoncé may not have been spotted in the stands (or on the field with Jay-Z), but she did take to her Instagram feed to share her look with us. And in true Beyoncé fashion, the post was captionless and tagless.

Given that she was attending a sporting event—albeit a big, high-profile one—Beyoncé kept things just a bit casual, opting to wear cutoff denim shorts. But with the shorts, she wore a few decidedly un-casual items, including a corset, a short trench coat, sheer stockings, very high platform heels, and lots and lots of diamonds. It may not be what most of us wear with denim shorts, but did you really think she'd wear them with a T-shirt and sneakers? In short, no.

Emmy Award–winning costumer designer and stylist Zerina Akers has a stacked résumé. She became a household name by architecting iconic looks for famous faces such as Megan Thee Stallion, Chloe x Halle, and Michaela Coel, just to name a few. However, Akers is most known for her work with Beyoncé, including her role as the costumer designer for Beyoncé's film on Disney+ Black Is King.

Beyond her work as a stylist and costume designer, Akers founded Black Owned Everything, an e-commerce marketplace that seeks to amplify and empower a community of brands to reach diverse and engaged audiences.

In addition to the fact that you work as an incredible stylist and entrepreneur, you also added costume designer to your résumé in 2020. How is styling different from costume design? I think that a lot of folks think they're quite similar, but they're not always right.

It's very different, and I'm still learning. It's bizarre because I've now won this Emmy, but it's such a new space. Black Is King ushered me into that new space. Working on it was a different experience than many people would think. Everything just didn't stop. We were in New York, we were in L.A. We knew we were initially just going to do these one-minute clips for each song to kind of promo the album. Then it turned into, "Okay, now we're doing a film. We're doing a video for each song." All I knew was that each time that woman stepped out of that trailer, I wanted someone to go Ooh.

I think in hindsight, I probably would have scaled back at some point. I was just in the moment, moment by moment, wanting it to be decadent. Wanting her to feel special and for it to connect culturally and for it to just feel really beautiful.

You worked with everyone from Valentino to up-and-coming designers from across Africa [for Black Is King]. How do you decide who to work with, and how do you approach storytelling through costume?

These threads of authenticity are always important. I don't like to reference too much, which is kind of a good thing, kind of a bad thing. I don't want it to be necessarily historically accurate, per se. I feel like stylists and creators get caught up in reference photos. It's like, "Okay, well then at what point do we have something new? Why do I have to show you something that exists in order for us to create something new?"

So allowing myself the freedom of it just being. But it was important for me to use the natural elements. Use the elements that I found in different cultures that were true and unique to those cultures.

How do you know who to work with? How do you know it's going to be the right fit? How do you know that you're going to collaborate well with someone? Because it's such an intimate and personal relationship.

I'm just learning that as well. To be honest, I went through about two, maybe three years where I didn't say no to anything. Big or small. If I was scared to do it, I still said yes, and it worked out. If I didn't think I had time to do it. I still said yes, and it worked out.

Now, I'm in this new space where it's like, "What do I want to do? What's gonna really benefit?" Someone asked me the other day, "Who is your dream person to work with?" I didn't have an answer. I don't really dream of working with people anymore. I want to create things that are bigger than that. I do want to go into film and be a student of that and costume design and really learn that new world.

I'm just now learning how to say no. My schedule forces me to do that, so it kind of helps me. I've just been turning things down, but more so because I'm realizing that a lot of things have taken away from the things that are important to me or the things that I own. So you can take all that time and pour it into someone else's project or you can pour it into your own projects and into yourself. I've been wanting to recently make more time for those things, creating meaningful content, which takes time.

I'm learning how to create boundaries now and really go into things that serve a greater purpose.

What I love about their pairing is that while they’re never completely matchy-matchy, their vibe together gives off a bit of artsy, grungy, downright edgy energy. No need to be in matching gowns and suits; just wear something within the same aesthetic, and you’ll look chic even if you’re just going for a cup of coffee.

The key to great couples style is knowing how to balance each individual’s style and, if you’re lucky enough, having a great stylist. Take note from the Biebers, and make sure one partner is wearing a neutral-friendly ensemble when the other plays with prints.

Relationships don’t always last, but what’s for certain is Page’s role as an important figure within the LGBQT+ community, and a style icon is forever.

It just shows that doing a complete matching look can be done tactfully, and if you can get them to wear matching Gucci with you, they’re a good one.

If you've watched a hip-hop music video from the '90s, it was probably styled by June Ambrose. She has had her hand in some of the most iconic videos for hip-hop's biggest stars, from Missy Elliot to Jay-Z.

Since then, Ambrose has done everything from starring in her own TV show to becoming a published author. Now, she has taken on a new title: creative director of Puma.

In her role at Puma, Ambrose is working across multiple categories within the company. Just this month, Ambrose debuted Puma's first-ever women's basketball collection, called Puma High Court, a mixture of clothing and accessories inspired by the marriage of basketball and streetwear.

We had so much fun on Second Life talking about your entire career—from finance, styling music videos, being recognized as the cultural image maker that you are today, and everything in between. Since then, you've also added another massive title to your résumé, which is that you are the creative director for Puma's Women's Hoops. 

It's really exciting to be able to launch a division for such an iconic brand such as Puma. So that part is really exciting. Huge responsibility, but one that I'm extremely enthusiastic about taking on and moving this particular conversation forward: women in basketball.

How did those conversations start?

The conversation originally started with Jay-Z and Emory Jones. We didn't know that it was going to be women's basketball initially. When I went into the Puma office and sat with Adam Petrick and when I met the CEO of Puma at an event, we hadn't yet decided that this is what we wanted to do.

I think they had in mind that they wanted to speak to this particular sector, and then once I came into the office to really think about where I would be most effective and serve and where the white space was, that was on the table. I said, "I would love to take that on. I think that no one's really taking a stylish approach to sportswear."

At the time, I don't think the other brands had launched their women's basketball apparel pieces. It was all kind of happening as we were developing stuff. I think everybody was in that frame of mind. Like, what's next?

I thought it was so interesting that the collection has such a wonderful and varied price point that on the low end is $30 on the high end is closer to $400.

I wanted it to be approachable but still elevated. I didn't want to alienate any specific income. I also wanted to teach women how to put things together. One of my core competencies is styling. I recognize that I have the ability to do both. As you're designing the collection, I'm thinking about how I can merchandise this so many different ways.

When you purchase even just one piece, it has meaning, and that one piece is going to be a punctuation piece. But then how do you integrate it into your wardrobe? I want to encourage people to do that.

Sportswear is no longer just for performance. After the pandemic, we all came out in slippers and sweatpants. I don't think that's going anywhere. You know, sports bras are being worn under cardigans and blazers now. You're wearing your sports bra with your trousers.

I'm saying to the customer, "This is why you shop with me because I'm thinking about your lifestyle. I'm thinking about your pocket. I'm thinking about what's important to you."

Can we talk about the Tiffany & Co. campaign? The Carters were amazing in it. Obviously, you had a very strong hand in everything. Can we talk about how that project came together? The symbolism in the project? How you were thinking about the fashion in it?

It was the most top-secret. We had code names. There were no emails with their names on it. That part has always been the fun. Working on these top-secret projects and then waiting for them to embargo.

When I got the call, I just immediately thought, How freakin' genius.

It's not even like Tiffany's needed to be reinvented. It was like, how do you reimagine it? How do you bring it into a now and still preserve the integrity of the brand? What better two icons to do that?

When it comes to switching up my hairstyle, I can get a little shy. In fact, I've had the same hairstyle (long, bleached, center-parted) for nearly 10 years. And what's really quite funny is that despite the fact that my hair has looked the same that whole time, the techniques I find myself asking the hairstylist for have varied drastically over the years. Kim's chunky highlights might look subtle, but those light streaks teamed with a choker is the stuff that '90s dreams are made of. 

Tonal streaks through thick, curly hair can create the illusion of even more volume and texture. I am loving this.

Lotte's face-framing chunky highlights (otherwise known as "rogue blonde") are seriously on-trend right. And seriously cool, too. 

Everything about Celeste's look is goals. The popping pink eye, the butter-soft skin, and of course, the light streaks through her hair. 

Caramel tones in a sleek, straight bob? J.Lo, I salute you.
