This feels specific to this particular collection, as it's not something that I've seen popping up among other fashion houses, making it feel unique to the new Balmain. Embellished with seashell bag charms and large enough to carry a change of clothes or beach towel, the fringe satchels held by the runway models featured long straps, allowing the bags to drop below the waist and swing effortlessly at their sides. In stark contrast to minimalist designers opting for pillbox hats this season (The Garment and Khaite both featured the structured staple), Balmain opted for sultry, soft hoots for its headwear du jour. The brand's latest launch with Kurkdjian? A concentrated reiteration of five famous scents from the La Collection Priveé Christian Dior Collection. These reimagined fragrances are bold, head-turning, compliment-inducing scents that radiate modern luxury. In 1947, Balmain revolutionized the fragrance world with the launch of the first iconic green scent, Vent Vert, and we do not doubt that Les Éternels de Balmain will carry the same legacy.

The bottles themselves are a work of art and feel like a true expression of how fashion and beauty cannot exist without one another, as explained by Rousteing when he discusses the fragrances. But not even the bottles could prepare us for just how exquisite these scents are. Although we could write an essay on each, from the minute we smelled them, we knew that Carbone would be our autumn fragrance of choice. This is the sort of scent that you want to wrap yourself in and never take off.

It’s a complex fragrance with notes of sensual white musk at the heart, but it opens with hints of sweet rose, which almost lures you into a false sense of security before the true depth of this perfume comes through and you start to discover its darker side. Once notes of musk settle on the skin, you're treated to a warming haze of tobacco, suede, and cumin. It’s bold, unique and truly delicious.

5. LOUIS VUITTON LV LOVERS

Louis Vuitton’s latest fragrance is, without a doubt, love at first smell. Inspired by the sensation of sunlight on your skin and the natural process of photosynthesis, it exudes a radiant blend of green and woody notes, evoking the feeling of wandering through a sunlit forest surrounded by fresh, dewy leaves in dappled light.

Crafted by Louis Vuitton’s master perfumer Jacques Cavallier Belletrud in collaboration with men's creative director, Pharrell Williams, the scent is intended as an invigorating well-being elixir that instantly boosts your mood. And who doesn't want that once the nights begin to draw in? The fragrance boasts impressive projection and longevity, lingering on clothes all day like an optimistic halo.

The zing of ginger opens the scent, followed a the woody green snap of galbanum before drying down into creamy sandalwood and soft cedarwood. This autumn, the brand has introduced a new iteration called L’Interdit Absolu Eau de Parfum Intense. With an intoxicating blend of orange blossom, sambac jasmine, lavender, and cardamom, it’s an uplifting scent with a strong, sensual base. Crafted by Louis Vuitton’s master perfumer Jacques Cavallier Belletrud in collaboration with men's Creative Director, Pharrell Williams, the scent is intended as an invigorating well-being elixir that instantly boosts your mood. And who doesn't want that once the nights begin to draw in? The fragrance boasts impressive projection and longevity, lingering on clothes all day like an optimistic halo.

The zing of ginger opens the scent, followed a the woody green snap of galbanum before drying down into creamy sandalwood and soft cedarwood. It’s one of those uplifting scents that not only smells incredible but instantly elevates your spirits with every spritz. We applaud Louis Vuitton for bottling liquid sunshine, just in time to carry us through the darker months ahead.

6. GIVENCHY L'INTERDIT ABSOLU

According to Givenchy’s latest perfume launch, this season is not the time to be subtle with your scent of choice. The French fashion house is known for its daring fragrances, and one of our all-time favourites has to be L’Interdit, a musky-floral scent that lingers beautifully on the skin.

This autumn, the brand has introduced a new iteration called L’Interdit Absolu Eau de Parfum Intense. With an intoxicating blend of orange blossom, sambac jasmine, lavender and cardamom, it’s an uplifting scent with a strong, sensual base. Although the opening is inherently floral, your senses are taken on a journey thanks to rich notes of tobacco and rum absolute. Once it settles on the skin, warming cashmeran comes through, making this fragrance feel just as luxurious as your favourite cashmere jumper.

7. FENDI DOLCE BACIO

Fendi sent editors' hearts aflutter with the launch of seven fragrances this year, each inspired by the Fendi family personalities that have each shaped the brand throughout the generations. Our favourite? Dolce Bacio.

Inspired by Anna Fendi, who also happens to have an ochre-coloured rose named after her, Dolce Bacio takes the classical rose note and pairs it with the alluringly sweet and sunny apricot. Described as "a tender kiss on the cheek that leaves behind a faint rose lipstick scent" and "vibrant orange sunrises overlooking rose gardens in Rome", you would be forgiven for thinking this is only a fruity-floral. However, the addition of Indonesian patchouli unfurls, making this scent both gentle and powerful; a trait that Anna Fendi's daughter Silvia Venturini Fendi notices in the generations of Fendi women.

Upon first spritz, this scent sparkles with the brightness of sun-kissed apricot and the earthy, smokey dryness of patchouli. At its heart lies the opulent damask rose from Turkey—powerful, velvety and akin to a warm embrace, making this a cosy scent that will linger long into autumnal evenings.

About Balmain 

What transforms a boutique atelier into a luxury powerhouse? Perspective, which the late Pierre Balmain had plenty of during his time. He grew up in a small alpine village in France, so it's hard to imagine that Balmain had the foresight that he'd transform a small family-owned dress shop into one of the most successful household names in fashion. All that Balmain knew from an early age was that he felt called to design despite all the detours he experienced along the way. Boy, were there many: studying architecture at the École des Beaux-Art at the behest of his mother, having his time designing under the tutelage of Molyneux cut short because of the military draft, and even having a falling-out with Christian Dior after they initially agreed to begin their brand together.

In spite of all of this, Balmain went on to found his namesake label in 1945, releasing his debut couture collection that's credited for creating "New French Style." A distinct pivot from the utilitarian fashion that defined the post–World War II era, Balmain focused on clean-cut tailoring that emphasized the female form, capturing the collective attention of the fashion crowd and celebrities alike. From then on, the brand continued building the its couture, ready-to-wear, and leather-goods offerings until the founder's death in 1982. Since then, we've seen the house's unique perspective live on through some of the industry's most iconic creative directors, including Hervé Pierre, Oscar de La Renta, and Christophe Decarnin. But possibly the most influential of all is the house's current creative director, Olivier Rousteing. 

Much like the late Balmain, Rousteing's challenging journey has led him to create some of the most captivating clothing of our time. Born as an orphan, Rousteing, from a young age, felt compelled to design. He studied at Ecole Supérieure des Arts et Techniques de la Mode before landing roles working under Roberto Cavalli and then Christophe Decarnin. His later role, under Decarnin, led the protégé to eventually become the creative successor of Balmain at the age of 24, making him the youngest Black designer to be appointed to a luxury fashion house. In hindsight, his appointment marked the shift for Balmain and the broader fashion industry. Remember that long before there was any collective reckoning about the lack of diversity within the fashion industry, there was Rousteing.

For so long, positions of power in the high echelons of society and high fashion have been associated with whiteness. Therefore, the mere fact that Rousteing has existed within that space for well over a decade is revolutionary in and of itself. But it's not just that he's occupied that space; he's succeeded in it. By bringing back the brand's couture, menswear, and leather goods, he's successfully increased Balmain's bottom line by millions of dollars. In many ways, Rousteing has managed to bridge the gap between haute couture and current culture, which is no easy feat. In part, how he's been able to do that is his ability to notice what's next.

But I'll settle for somewhere by a pool or beach in the meantime if I must. This black pair is seriously cool and very on-trend thanks to the quilted leather. Styling them with wide-leg drawstring pants in Balmain's signature logo print and a simple cropped knit top feels casual yet elevated. The gold hardware on this teeny, tiny bag ties in perfectly with the gold buttons on the tank, don't you think?

No matter what time of year it is, my dream wardrobe involves denim. But summer means lighter washes and shorter hemlines. This set passes the test and then some. I love the contrast between the flirty and fitted denim skirt and the matching oversize denim jacket. (How cool are the pearl details on the back?) Because I'm the one calling the shots in this dream, I'm choosing to bring maximum drama with a denim bag and other bright white accessories. Dramatic attitude not included.

On Monday, celebrities ranging from Zoë Kravitz and Kaia Gerber to Amanda Gorman and Tessa Thompson flocked to the Getty Center in Los Angeles for the sixth annual 2021 InStyle Awards. During the soirée, many in fashion were honored, including Fanning's longtime stylist Samantha McMillen, who took home the Stylist of the Year Award. As for the award for best dressed, that, according to us, goes to Fanning herself. Her sculptural belly top—which was embellished with large oval-shaped crystals and held up by the slightest of gold chains—is already becoming a viral sensation.

For Beija Velez, basketball player turned model turned L.A. cool girl, it has always been a pair of fresh sneakers. The self-declared sneakerhead owns—wait for it—over 300 pairs of kicks and counting.

I was 0% surprised to discover that her current favorite pair is none other than Balmain's BBold sneakers. The name is fitting, as the elevated, chunky-sole shoes really do inspire whoever is wearing them to be bold and use fashion for self-expression, something that Velez has been promoting for years. Velez's love of basketball, and subsequently sneakers, all started at a very young age. For an off duty look, Velez expertly pairs her BBold kicks with an elevated denim-on-denim 'fit but notes she'd also style the sneakers with a tracksuit for a more casual vibe. "I feel like getting dressed is a form of expression and displays the energy I'm feeling inside," she explains. If a pair of sneakers can spark the type of confident, powerful energy she's currently exuding, then count me in.

It is impossible not to root for Lizzo. Although the three-time Grammy Award winner was not nominated this year (hey, it's been a tough one for all of us), it was a joy to see Lizzo grace the 63rd annual Grammys stage as a presenter. Not only did she give out the award for Best New Artist to fellow Houstonian, Megan Thee Stallion, but also looked damn good doing so while channeling shimmery mermaid realness in not just one, but two looks over the course of the evening. 

Working with stylist Brett Alan Nelson to create her looks for the night, Lizzo's pastel gowns, both by Balmain, were complemented by several pieces of beautiful Bulgari jewelry and flawless makeup done by Alexx Mayo using all Charlotte Tilbury products. How would you describe Lizzo's red carpet style? Is there a specific feeling you're going for on Grammys night?

I always keep the disco era in mind when working with Lizzo. She’s such an icon, so I want to play up the iconic legends of that era but make it our own!

What type of jewelry did you have in mind for Lizzo's looks?

I knew Bulgari was the moment. They are such a legendary jewelry brand, and the Serpenti pieces were just so fitting with both dresses.

How has COVID-19 and the nature of remote awards shows been a challenge for you as a celeb stylist?

COVID has been terrible, honestly. Everything is virtual. But as a creative, I always want to give people a space to escape with us and enjoy the moment.

Any tips for viewers at home on achieving their own red carpet-worthy look?

Always have fun! Don’t worry about what anyone else says. If you feel happy and are having fun, then that’s all that matters.

No offense to Spider-Man, but damn: Mary Jane Watson just stole his spotlight. 

While we haven’t seen Spider-Man: Far From Home yet (yet!), if the worldwide press tour and red carpet premiere are indicative of anything, it’s that Zendaya is the star of the film, and perhaps even summer 2019. Teaming up again with longtime Image Architect, Law Roach, Zendaya has already stepped out in seven gorgeous red carpet outfits that are simultaneously fit for a fashion superstar while also demonstrating that summer trends aren’t limited to a combination of ribbed tanks, tie-dye, and Tevas. 

And, in case you haven’t noticed, Zendaya’s co-star, Tom Holland (aka Peter Parker aka Spider-Man), is also being styled by Roach. Who Even Needs a Full Outfit When You've Got a Coat Like Zendaya's?

Lately, it seems as though not a day goes by that I'm not triggered by a blatant form of racial insensitivity, an evident lack of diverse staff, or a lack of awareness of how systemic racism impacts every facet of life. While we're reckoning collectively with police brutality and systemic racism, the fashion industry has had to reflect upon how it needs to make serious changes in the industry. Of course, changes are happening, but for consumers, we can help propel the movement forward by taking a step back and looking at how we contribute.

Sure, we can't control what designers send down the runway. Still, one of the most fundamentally underrated ways to be an ally to the Black community (and any community for that matter) is how we spend our money. While recognizing the contributions that designers like Dapper Dan have been making to the industry is so important, I think there's genuinely no better way to appreciate and support Black artistry than by shopping from Black-owned businesses and designers. Aurora James of Brother Vellies

The first time I found the brand Brother Vellies in my feed, my heart skipped a beat. I saw a woman who looks just like me on social media (a rare occasion) wearing these incredible black feather heels. From that moment on, I was hooked, and for a good reason. Founded by Aurora James, the brand is dedicated to sustainability and works with artisans in South Africa, Ethiopia, Kenya, and Morocco to make its handcrafted shoes.

But the thoughtfulness doesn't stop at the production process; James also founded the Fifteen Percent Pledge. The nonprofit organization has been advocating for our favorite major retailers to commit to including more Black-owned businesses. Basically, whenever I’m feeling philanthropic but need a pair of shoes, I’ll be spending all my money on Brother Vellies. 

LaQuan Smith

Remember that iconic blazer look Beyoncé wore on her last On the Run II tour? That was from Queens-born designer LaQuan Smith. His glamorous and often sultry designs also have caught the attention of Cardi B, Rihanna, Jennifer Lopez, and other celebrities. But can you blame them? Smith has a way of creating the kinds of pieces that both Beyoncé and the rest of the world want to wear when they're feelin' themselves, and that, my friends, is a true talent.

Maximilian Davis of Ferragamo

One of the most anticipated creative director appointments in recent years? Maximilian Davis to Ferragamo. It's rare for a British Trinidadian Jamaican to secure such a lofty position in the industry, much less within only five years of graduating from the London College of Fashion. Nevertheless, Davis made waves with his namesake label because of his sultry take on tailoring, and that unique perspective has informed all of his collections thus far at Ferragamo.

Telfar Clemens

While you may know Telfar Clemens because of his "Bushwick Birkin," aka his iconic shopping totes that sell out in seconds, the truth is Clemens has been pushing societal boundaries by challenging Black and gender identity norms long before his bags became a hot commodity. He's now a CFDA/Vogue Fashion Fund winner who's collaborated with Ugg and Converse for special collections, but Clemens's approach to unisex, affordable designer clothing has long been at the ethos of this brand, making him a designer for all (quite literally). 

Virgil Abloh of Off-White 

Though Abloh passed away in 2021, his legacy lives on. The designer made waves with the luxury street label Off-White and grew his influence further when he stepped into his role as menswear artistic director for Louis Vuitton. Not only did he honor the brands’ identities when designing, but it felt as though both were a reflection of his own experiences as a Black man and the environments that shaped him. To me, that reflection in and of itself is breathtaking. 

Olivier Rousteing of Balmain

Maybe it was just me, but the 2019 Grammy outfits truly solidified my love for Olivier Rousteing at Balmain. How could one not still be in a tizzy over Beyoncé's iconic look, Jorja Smith's stunning gold sequin number, or even Kylie Jenner's avant-garde look? I know he's been the creative director for quite some time (which means I was high-key sleeping on him), but something about the documentary Wonder Boy made me fall in love with him all over again. Maybe it's his couture, perhaps it's his popular bags, or maybe it's just him, but either way, this a brand and a designer to buy into for the long haul. 

Sade Mims of Edas

Some of the best designers of the moment aren't at huge fashion houses; they're doing their own thing. That's the case with Sade Mims of Edas. Founded in 2013 in Brooklyn, the brand was a love letter to jewelry for Mims but has since expanded beyond eclectic jewelry pieces. In fact, the brand's sleek leather bags, beautifully beaded hats, and one-of-a-kind home objects are what has made this designer a favorite among artists and editors alike. Trust when we say Mims's brand is going to be your newest obsession. 

Theresa Ebagua of Chelsea Paris 

As all fashion editors can attest to, a good pair of shoes can make all the difference—and there is no other brand making shoes quite like Chelsea Paris. Founded in 2012 by the Nigerian-born, Los Angeles– and London-based Black footwear designer Theresa Ebagua, Chelsea Paris makes pieces that have been worn by icons such as Beyoncé and Lupita Nyong'o. But if you're wondering why you may not have heard of her brand yet, it's because the designer took a three-year hiatus to reestablish her approach to design and her heritage. When you can come back from a hiatus and still create shoes any editor would swoon over, you know you've got the touch. 

Felisha Noel of Fe Noel

Imagine yourself sitting in Positano, Italy, with the sun shining down on you while you’re drinking lemonade. What are you wearing? Hopefully, Fe Noel. The Grenadian womenswear designer from Brooklyn specialized in collections that practically scream "I wish I could book a flight right now." But beyond that, Noel has been known to collaborate with fellow artists to create pieces that reclaim the beauty of Black identity that’s been erased in larger historical narratives. And what's more beautiful than that? 

Nasrin Jean-Baptiste of Petit Kouraj

We've said it before, and we'll repeat it again: Petit Kouraj is a fashion-person favorite. What exactly makes this brand lovable, though? We'd say the intentionality founder Nasrin Jean-Baptiste put behind her brand. Born in London to Haitian immigrants, Jean-Baptiste's experience within the fashion industry started within the styling realm and eventually led to the founding of her handwoven bag company in 2019. But this isn't just another bag brand; cooked into the DNA of Petit Kouraj is an ethos to give back. Each bag is created with organic cotton, leather, and rayon and is made by a woman-led organization in Haiti that employs local artisans. Talk about wearable art. 

Rebecca Henry and Akua Shabaka of House of Aama

Fashion is all about storytelling—at least that's how the mother-daughter duo behind House of Aama, Rebecca Henry and Akua Shabaka, approach design. Founded in 2015, the brand has become known for how it upcycles vintage and deadstock fabrics to create unique pieces. It's not just the duo's sustainable approach to design that's intriguing but rather how they use historical research and archives to explore and honor the African diaspora in different collections, resulting in pieces that are the physical embodiment of uniqueness. 

Edvin Thompson of Theophilio

No matter the art form, there's a level of alchemy required to meld inspiration from various places, cultures, and ideas to create something completely new. Fashion designer Edvin Thompson has already mastered that with his brand Theophilio. Founded in 2016, the label is, in his own words, "a wearable biography," with nods to his childhood in Jamaica, New York City's progressive culture, and what's happening at the moment. But what makes Thompson's work so special is his unique perspective and how he melds his lived experience with upcycled fabrics to create one-of-a-kind pieces. Maybe it's alchemy, maybe it's magic, or possibly it's just Edvin Thompson. 

Brandon Blackwood

For most fashion houses, it can take decades to attain that "cult status." For the Brooklyn-born designer Brandon Blackwood, it only took seven. Of course, building a following didn't magically happen overnight. The brand was relatively small and only known among the fashion community until the release of the label's viral "End Systemic Racism" tote in 2020. That tiny bag may have catapulted Blackwood into international acclaim, but the designer's continued ability to create buzzy pieces keeps the label ever-relevant. It's expanded its handbag offering and launched an eyewear, footwear, and outerwear line. All of this is to say that this brand will only get bigger from here. 

Christopher John Rogers

For people in the know, it should come as no surprise that designer Christopher John Rogers has taken the industry by storm. Born and raised in Baton Rouge, Louisiana, the designer brings the Southern bigger-than-life essence to all of his colorful designs, and people are noticing. Not only did he receive the CFDA/Vogue Fashion Fund award in 2019, but also his collections since then have cued collective gasps. In many ways, Rogers creates the type of clothing I hope the fashion industry includes more of in the future, which is to say his work crosses boundaries. His creations are so excellent and so unapologetic that they force the world to no longer see the designer for the color of their skin, but rather for the beautiful things in which they choose to create.

We’ve already mentioned that style girls everywhere are going back in time to the ‘90s for major style inspiration, but based on recent trends… we think a new decade may be deserving of more attention this season. One look at street style and runway images from the latest fashion weeks and it’s almost impossible not to notice.

The ‘80s are back… in a big way.

Once we started to spot the ‘80s inspired trends, we couldn’t stop. It seems as if everything from our blazers to our hair accessories are straight out of the era that was Madonna and MJ. In fact, mastering the perfect ‘80s look is as easy as tapping into this winter’s biggest trends… who would’ve guessed?

Shoulder Pads

There’s no denying that shoulder pads have made a comeback. YSL’s show at Paris fashion week proves it. Suits in 2018 are looking a lot more androgynous, with one of the key features being big shoulders. If this style intimidates you, choose a blazer that’s a little more subtle in shape and colour, letting the shoulder pads stand out as a unique element on their own.

White Boots

You’ve seen them on every celebrity. You’ve seen them in every street style photo. We can’t stop talking about how much we want them… but did you know that the white ankle boot trend hearkens back to the '80s? That’s right, this cool “new” look isn’t so new after all…

Vinyl

We’ve been seeing vinyl in every form lately. From miniskirts to trench coats, everything seems to be made of vinyl. But this look isn’t just a 2018 street style star. Vinyl garments originated in the ‘80s, and when you take a second look, they do have a retro-cool vibe about them.

Leather Jackets

Arguably, a leather jacket has become a timeless staple, but it only really launched into extreme popularity during the 1980s. Though we may have given up crimped hair and bright eyeshadow (for now), we’ll definitely be holding on to our biker jackets for a little longer.

Boxy Blazers

Have you noticed that blazers are becoming bigger and boxier? You can thank the ‘80s for that as well. While we were at first a little surprised to see this unflattering trend completely takeover fashion week, a brief glance back into fashion history reminds us that this was a popular look in the ‘80s. Pair it with a mini skirt and you’ll be channelling the era in no time.

Bright Colours

Bright colours seem so fresh and new this season after years of more minimalistic style. However, much of what we’re seeing today evokes an ‘80s-esque style. We’re talking about the big red coats and bright blue trousers you’re seeing everywhere… it does seem to make sense, right? We can also attribute the pairing of bold colours with one another to the style stars of decades past: They pioneered this trend long before we even thought of it.

Statement Jewellery

Goodbye, dainty earrings. In 2018, bigger is better. One major takeaway from the latest runway shows is that accessorising this season is going to be more fun… a lot more fun. ‘80s fashion girls were no strangers to this concept. They piled on jewellery, and if they could pull it off, that means we can too.

Power Suits 

It’s easy to fall into the idea that women are so empowered in 2018 that we’re finally embracing the power suit, but the reality is that ‘80s women were the ones to rock this look in the first place. As more women started working in corporate offices alongside men, they channeled the style of their colleagues and thus inspired the trend as we know it today.

Fanny Packs

We’ve been talking about fanny packs a lot lately. And while we were a little shocked at first to seem them resurface, it makes sense in light of the fact that the ‘80s seems to be inspiring us all lately. Though style stars have started adapting the bag in new ways (over the shoulder), this is a quintessential ‘80s accessory.

Scrunchies

Last but not least, the hair accessory every It-girl is obsessed with. It’s no secret that the scrunchie was popular in the ‘80s, but we had to point out how it’s once again become a key part of our wardrobe. A ponytail almost looks boring without one now.

If there’s one tried-and-true shoe style that we look to time and time again, it’s suede ankle boots. Of course, with any piece that makes a consistent appearance in your wardrobe, it’s easy to get into a style rut with them. However, with the resurgence of Western-inspired style à la Calvin Klein, these booties are getting the attention they deserve.

A classic pick for any outfit, this style will go with just about anything, whether it’s a pair of classic skinny jeans for a night out or a polished skirt for the office. Perhaps you want to stay true to the timeless Chelsea boots or you’re ready to take the cowboy trend by the reins—no pun intended. Or, if you’re itching to add some extra color to your outfits, opt for a bright style. No matter what you decide, we guarantee that with these boots, your outfit will look anything but tired.

Interested to find out one woman's approach, we tapped Débora Rosa—a chic Portuguese fashion girl whose minimal style deserves your attention. From a quick glance at her Instagram, you’ll notice her penchant for pieces from Céline and The Row—both masters of minimal fashion. But she also has an expert ability to pluck pieces from affordable retailers like H&M and make them look equally cool and fashion-forward.

When asked about her approach to nighttime dressing, Rosa told Who What Wear, “For the evening or going out I always rely on my three-rule mantra: Comfort, black canvas, sexy-chic.” These pieces ground her look but she “normally starts with something black: a tee, jeans, trousers, dress, or blouse.” And her go-to outfit for a night out? It's a match made in top-model heaven. Balmain and Victoria's Secret have teamed up for a collaboration that unsurprisingly marries the glamour that both brands are known for. Designer and Balmain Creative Director Olivier Rousteing has created an It-girl cult around the lauded house, with fans ranging from Kendall Jenner to Joan Smalls—models who, as it happens, have also become icons on the Victoria's Secret runways over years past.

This marks the first time Victoria's Secret has worked with another brand to create an exclusive collaboration to be sold in stores. A number of styles will also be incorporated into the VS Fashion Show in Shanghai later this month. From crystal-encrused bras to underwear with fishnet details, the collection marries Balmain's rockstar DNA with the flash we've come to expect from VS's buzzy fashion shows.

It's true—2017 has arguably saved its most out-there fashion collab for last. Victoria's Secret just announced on its Instagram that the brand is teaming up with Balmain on a collection to be launched on November 29. The lingerie retailer teased the news with a black-and-white illustration featuring the words "Balmain loves VS."

As Vogue reports, Balmain will be designing looks for the VS Fashion Show in Shanghai as well as a capsule collection. "As for what to expect from Balmain’s VS line, you can bet on some sexily gilded items, lots of body-conscious silhouettes and the label’s luxury expertise being translated into both the runway and real-world items," Vogue explains. Even if you’ve never worn (or touched) a piece of Balmain clothing, you’re most definitely familiar with the face of the brand. No, no Kim Kardashian West or Kanye West—although they wear a ton the iconic French brand and have fronted a campaign. We’re talking about the man who dazzled everyone in the fashion world when he assumed the position of creative director at the age of 25: Olivier Rousteing.

In an intimate talk last night as a part of The Atelier With Alina Cho at the Metropolitan Museum of Art, the designer talked all about his life, upbringing, design philosophy, and so much more. Below we rounded up the five most interesting tidbits we heard.

He wants everyone in on the fashion conversation.

“Balmain is really diverse because diversity, for me, is one of the most important topics in fashion,” says Rousteing, whose runways have always reflected this philosophy in their model castings. It’s a core principle for the brand and one that he’s not shying away from anytime soon. “That’s what is modern today; that’s what is fashion.”

He’s incredibly choosy about who he dresses.

“I would never dress someone that I don’t believe in, I don’t like their music, I don’t like his world or her world. People I dress are people that I love, that I believe in, that inspire me.”

His cheekbones come at a cost (not the monetary kind).

Rousteing says that his most famous facial asset is the result of sucking in his cheeks “so hard,” he jokes. “I think there’s blood or they’re blue inside.”

His now famous nude cover of Tetu magazine taught his own family a lot about him.

Rousteing paints a picture of his grandfather coming across the cover of the magazine during his usual errands where he lives in the South of France and being surprised. “They learned about my life,” he says of his family. “All my confessions, all my secrets. They opened that magazine and they saw.”

There’s only one other fashion house he would work for.

“Mine,” he says, plain and simple. Although he didn’t point to any immediate plans to launch an Olivier Rousteing label, he does suggest that it’s a possibility in the future. “It’s part of a process.”

It might sound crazy, but we called it, and it's totally coming true—a fashion item from circa 1500 is becoming a major trend item. Ladies, we're talking about the corset. The latest style star to hop on this trend train is none other than Hailey Baldwin, who wore a majorly edgy look out in Paris last week. She layered a pastel-pink Balmain corset over a not quite off-the-shoulder top, very reminiscent the styling at Saint Laurent's S/S 17 runway show. This look, once combined with a thick black choker, leather pants, and lace-up utilitarian ankle boots, made for one bold statement. This trend may just now be gaining steam, but we have a feeling we're going to be seeing a lot of it in the coming months. We're totally here for it.

Gigi Hadid stalking the runway in a molten chainmail dress? It could only mean one thing: Balmain's show during Paris Fashion Week. Creative director Olivier Rousteing's now instantly recognisable, high-octane, highly glamorous aesthetic can be called out from 100 paces—as can his so-famous-it's-insane front-row club with Kanye and Kim Kardashian West acting as the shiny, paparazzi-attracting linchpin.

There's a lot you already know about the booming French fashion brand, thanks to this high-profile clique, but there's also much that you don't. For a notable amount of time in between the founder (Pierre Balmain) stepping down and Olivier's star rising, the house wasn't on the radar in quite the same loud, omnipresent way it is today.

Even with social media acting as the cheerleading coach to an already seriously upbeat fashion team, there's still much you may not be aware of when it comes to the boundary-pushing Instagram king and creative director. So, if you've ever wanted to gen up on the brand that every It girl wants to wear/be in the campaign of/walk the runway for/party with, here's your chance. Keep reading to find out the things you never knew about Balmain.

According to Vogue.com, a deal was recently finalised with a major investment company to make this move—a higher-than-expected price that is greatly accredited to Olivier Rousteing's successful brand-building as creative director. 

It's a toss-up between Marlene Dietrich, Josephine Baker, Audrey Hepburn and Brigitte Bardot, pictured. Many of the most daring Hollywood stars were into the decadence of Balmain's past, just as they are now.

Surprised? Well, you probably know his Instagram stats instead—3.9 million and counting. Olivier has worked in the fashion industry since he was 18 and took up the head role at Balmain when he was only 24 back in 2011—a seriously impressive task he's continued to nail season upon season.

Mr. De la Renta was followed by Christophe Decarnin (whom Olivier worked alongside before stepping up to the bar). Even Karl Lagerfeld had a very brief stint at the French fashion brand.

A/W 15 reportedly celebrated the rebellion that forced his friend, Rihanna, to be banned from Instagram in 2014 over a supposedly risqué post.

Perhaps nowadays this doesn't seem like an unusual route (Tom Ford studied architecture, and Raf Simons furniture design before venturing into fashion), but Pierre Balmain initially eschewed fashion at the time to "appease his mother."

Thanks to a rogue hacker, many an exclusive magazine or online fashion piece was destroyed (mine included). But the hype grew even stronger, and a website-crashing effect of the November 2015 launch saw the collaboration sell out in no time—with this particular pearl jacket quickly finding its way onto eBay priced up by about £600 to £1000.

Kicked off by Decarnin's power-shouldered, street-savvy glitz and glamour, the late pop star did actually wear Balmain's instantly recognisable (women's) outerwear. As fate would have it, Olivier is a superfan, recently posting a picture of Jackson in his iconic military-style jacket to Instagram.

Don't let the social media connections fool you; Olivier is in honest and meaningful friendships with the likes of Kim Kardashian West and Rosie Huntington-Whiteley. They all share one thing Rousteing admires in women: power.

"He can be chic and he can be sexy. He's so iconic—he has a sex appeal beyond his clothes. This is what I love about him," he told MatchesFashion.com.

According to Vogue [in The Fashion Book], Monsieur Balmain's focus was often on heavily embellished and decorative skirts. It was all part of the signature look called "Jolie Madame," an opulent reaction to wartime utilitarianism and the sombre style that came with it.

But—good news—it has since been doubling profits year on year. 

You can't actually get your face chiseled to be as razor-sharp and naturally handsome as Olivier's, but he once told me, when opening the brand's flagship store in London, that it's all down to "fish face: suck in cheek and three-quarter [angle]. Good filter and it's fine. And 25 pictures before getting the right one. Maybe not 25, maybe three or four!"

What to wear? This predicament is greatly heightened when the occasion in mind is your wedding day. Fashion editors are not immune to the bridal pressure cooker either; if anything, it adds more gravity to people’s expectations. The lead-up to my wedding involved the usual whirlwind of questions facing a newly engaged woman: What dress would I go for? How would I wear my hair? Which designer would I choose? The hunt was on for the dream dress but it just didn’t go as well as I’d hoped.

Being curvy, tall and a lover of carbs, I couldn’t imagine myself in something slinky, nor did I want to go down the meringue route. I made multiple appointments to try on wedding gowns but my heart didn’t flutter. Quite the contrary, I felt doomed to look like an avalanche of crêpe de chine. I just couldn’t find a 360-degree fit for my shape that oozed my style. As options narrowed and lunch breaks were filled up with snow flurries of manic dress searches, I called it quits on bridal pret-à-porter. The dress just didn’t exist. Yet.

The haute pursuit begins! If something is classed as couture, then it means that a piece is made-to-measure for your body. You can choose a designer dress from a collection and have it fitted exclusively to your shape. Wonderful, but what if you want to go one step further and design your own garment? One could save up £200,000 and hit the marble halls of Paris where an exclusive design is made for you from one of the prestigious haute couture fashion houses, but considering there's a minority of regular global customers, this is unlikely for most.

If you don't own a yacht or have six digits to spare, then fear not, another option is available. You could find a British-based dress designer costume designer who can make a gown especially for you. Some call it design couture—a process that includes a toile of your body, an exclusive design, a garment made in-house, and personal fittings to underscore the design process. Bridal-designers-cum-courtiers are like gold dust because only a select few fashion houses make one-of-kind gowns; the industries main focus is on ready-to-wear. I found the right one via recommendations from friends at Brides magazine, but some determined Google searches would unearth your local options.

Who What Wear UK: There’s so much to organize for a wedding day. How important is it to share information about the event planning with the dress designer?

Anita Massarella: It’s very helpful to know as much as possible. I like to get a background of the bride’s wedding vision, and if there’s a storyboard or Pinterest link to ideas then that helps me to get a sense of the couple’s personality.

WWW UK: What questions do you often ask the bride about the wedding plans?

AM: Is the day going to be formal or more relaxed? In a grand venue or outdoors? Home or abroad? Even if the bride is still forming a plan for her big day, it’s helpful to know the wider context so that together we can create a suitable design for the season. As soon as the colour theme for the venue is decided, it’s important to inform your dress designer so that it can be reflected in little flourishes on the garment, if at all.

WWW UK: It’s hard to know what credentials to look out for in a fashion house or dressmaker. How do you identify where to go?

AM: If you cannot find what you want in ready-to-wear (i.e. off-the-peg collections) then having something designed uniquely for you is a great option. Enquire if the designer can offer exclusive designs or to what extent they customise dresses. We create one-of-a-kind couture dresses but not all places do. It's also okay to ask how many years of experience the designer has. Do read the client testimonials on their social media and website; it’s clear when a brand has a good reputation. You ideally want a team that can deliver the entire package: create an exclusive design to suit you, produce the dress pattern, make the dress in-house and provide the professional fittings.

WWW UK: Where do most of your brides get their dress ideas from?

AM: Mainly Instagram, Pinterest or cut-outs from society events in the back of Vogue, Tatler etc. I’ve noticed that when people look at photos from formal events, like polo or Ascot, then it’s easier to see a range of different clothing designs worn by real people with varying figures. It can be less daunting than looking at models.

WWW UK: Once you’ve found the right person to collaborate with and to make your dress, what’s the best way to kick-start the design process?

AM: You don’t need to know the fabric or design terminology, a good designer can interpret what you want by the way you describe what you like. For example, an experienced designer will be able to tell from a photo if the bride wants something soft, bias-cut and clings to the body, and billowing chiffon coming from the back of it, or if the structure of the dress needs to boned, corseted, stiff dress etc.

WWW UK: There are so many different fabrics to choose from. How do you pick the right one?

AM: Identify how you would like your dress to move and sit on your body. If you want it to sway and flow, then chiffon is perfect for that. If you want a stiff dress then gabardine holds its shape; but this where the designer's expertise comes in. Just remember that the style of the dress needs to work with the choice of fabric.

WWW UK: How do you get ideas into one cohesive design?

AM: Begin with an outline of a body sketched on a piece of paper. Drawing out ideas is a great starting point. I tend to go step-by-step from talking about what neckline would suit the client to the favoured sleeve length, how it fits the waist etc. At each stage, you need to consider how the design works as a whole and how to keep it all in proportion with your shape.

WWW UK: When the design is agreed, what’s the next step?

AM: The next stage is finalising which fabrics will be used in the lining, for the main body of the dress. This process involves looking at lots of fabric samples with your designer and exploring which shades suit your complexion. I go as far as including the bride in choosing the very buttons and hand-picking the beads that will be sewn on! You can decide which beads, what colours, what shade, what size! If you’re making a dress from scratch, you can even cherry-pick embellishments or fabrics that suit the shade of your eyes.

WWW UK: How can a bride get the most out of dress fittings?

AM: Wear a really good fitting bra, and the heels that you are going to wear on the day (or of a similar height) because that will affect your posture. A good designer will offer you the opportunity to make adjustments at your fitting. Do take the opportunity to amend the design slightly or be more bold with decisions, like lowering a neckline slightly or exaggerating the silhouette of the dress by asking for the fabric to be nipped in a little.

WWW UK: On a second fitting, is it a good idea to bring the extra outfit details?

AM: Absolutely! The second fitting is where you can road test all of the elements of your look to see what works. If you’re having a hair trial then come in for a fitting with the hair and makeup trial. It’s also a good chance to try out the veil to make sure all the final pieces come together. If you are having a tryout for your bouquet, bring it in at this point. Then you can check that everything is perfect. Don’t be afraid to point out details that you want to be tweaked. And when you have your final fitting, do bring a bottle of chilled champagne and your best friend and/or your mother to soak in the fun of it all!

Right now the world is in #HMBALMAINATION hysteria. Launching worldwide yesterday, the Balmain x H&M collection was a sell-out, sending fans into a crazy spin. Surprising? No. It is the perfect fusion of high-fashion designs, mixes quality with affordability and, of course, there's that Kardashian-Jenner influence.

What is surprising though, is that people forget its true value, as moments after it landed in stores, it was on eBay selling for hundreds (and sometimes thousands) of dollars more than its original cost.

The figure I’m about to throw at you will blow your mind. Right now, there’s a Balmain x H&M dress on eBay for $1300. Call me crazy, but I’d rather buy the ‘real’ thing for a fraction more.

That’s not to say that a designer collaboration isn’t a great concept, because it is. It gives normal people (i.e. you and I), who can’t splash out $2000 on a jacket on a weekly basis, the opportunity to still buy a piece from that designer.
