While we were at the Silver Lake Farmers Market one Saturday, my partner pointed out how many people were wearing basketball shorts. Further proving his observation, one of my best friends who lives in L.A. met up with us wearing a black pair with mid-calf boots.

Whilst everyone in L.A. is styling capris and tank tops as though they’re the only pieces worth wearing, over on the East Coast, New York’s chicest dressers are taking a more timeless approach to early summer styling. Cool and polished in that very New York way, Kaia Gerber stepped out this week in the exact outfit formula I keep seeing on the city's chicest dressers.

Keeping things simple, the model started with a pair of slouchy mid-wash jeans. Skipping the capri styles dominating right now—and even the stovepipe cuts that continue to crop up—her relaxed denim gave the look an easy, undone energy that felt perfectly suited to the city.

From there, Kaia sharpened things up with classic black ballet flats, adding a polished touch without making the outfit feel overdone. Then, instead of reaching for a basic white tee, she opted for Cou Cou's black boat-neck Rina Top (£64), complete with an on-trend 3/4-length sleeve. I always have clothes I wear on repeat, and I'm a fan of uniform dressing. So whenever a new season starts, I like to create a capsule wardrobe of things I can mix and match. For summer, there are certain nonnegotiables. For instance, I won't leave the house without sunglasses.

I've spoken a lot about how I mainly wear skirts and dresses, but I've finally ordered a pair of Levi's 501 '90s Jeans. The weather in NYC can fluctuate so much that, even in the summer, it's still worth having jeans for the random days that aren't as hot.

Maybe it's living in NYC, but I never wear high heels. At some point, I started specifically checking heel heights to make sure everything I buy is two inches or under.

I do have the Camper Casi Myra Leather Ballerinas that I absolutely love and highly recommend, but in the depths of summer, there comes a point when leather footwear is a recipe for blisters. Instead, I go for materials like mesh and neoprene.

As we move further away from the start of the ballet-flats trend several years ago, I see fewer and fewer examples of people wearing basic ballet flats with the little bows. Collins, who is currently filming season six of Emily in Paris in Mykonos, was just spotted heading to lunch via boat with her castmates. Whoever decided that jeans aren't a dressing option for long flights got it all wrong. Sure, some pairs aren't designed for sitting. We've all owned them and probably gotten a stomach ache as a result, but that shouldn't turn you off of wearing looser alternatives for flying. Actually, as someone with over 300,000 Delta miles at the moment, I prefer to wear jeans to the airport. Rather, I prefer to wear relaxed jeans to the airport, and I'm not the only one. Alexa Chung and her boyfriend, Tom Sturridge, are supporters of the travel-jeans movement as well. It's true. I just saw photos of them both at the Cannes Airport wearing them with matching patent-leather flats—him in loafers and her choosing ballet flats from Repetto.

The result? Easy, comfortable outfits for short and long flights that, yes, include jeans. Both Chung and Sturridge opted for similarly washed, relaxed jeans, likely vintage from Levi's or a similar denim brand. What makes this denim option perfect for flying is all in the name. It's not overly stiff or tight and doesn't cut into your skin with every step. It's subtly loose, and the fabric is soft from wear, be it genuine or manufactured. Plus, jeans are more substantial than, say, leggings or yoga pants, so they make you feel more covered and take up more space in luggage. By wearing them on the plane, you'll end up with room to pack that extra dress, jacket, or skirt. Now that I think about it, people who wear relaxed jeans at the airport win no matter how you look at it.

With her pair, Chung added a sporty windbreaker layered over a gray hoodie, and for shoes, she wore black socks with patent-leather ballet flats—another airport hack. (Never get caught in the security line without some foot protection in case they still ask you to remove your shoes!) Specifically, the material she chose for her footwear stood out, especially against the casual nature of the rest of her airport outfit. If you've been a longtime Alexa Chung fan, you may remember a pair of shoes she wore constantly during what some refer to as the “indie-twee era”: Carel’s Kina. All these years later, Olivia Rodrigo was recently been seen wearing a pair too.

Interested in learning more about the brand’s history, I started reading up on it. Carel began in 1947, when Georges and Rosa Carel opened their first women’s shoe boutique in Paris. Their goal was to create shoes that were both comfortable and elegant, favoring an under-two-inch “trotter” heel, which feels incredibly me.

In 1974, the Marquis was released—a flat-heeled ballerina shoe decorated with a bow, reminiscent of an opera slipper. I ended up trying the Carlotta, and as soon as I put them on, I literally said these exact words out loud to my partner: “These are beautiful, gorgeous, and perfect.” They truly feel like the ideal shoe. I was genuinely surprised by how impeccably soft and comfortable the leather was, which the label describes as feeling like “a second skin.” And the shape feels especially feminine and chic.

Other pairs that caught my attention include two especially showstopping, vacation-y new arrivals: the Acai heels and Piscine sandals, both adorned with tropical flower appliqués—a popular trend for spring/summer 2026.
