This summer, sunglasses aren't finishing the outfit—they're becoming the outfit.

Across the spring/summer 2026 runways, maisons in Paris and New York seemed to arrive at the same conclusion: If you're going to wear sunglasses, they may as well take up half your face. Shield sunnies are dramatically sweeping from temple to temple. Rounded bug-eye frames are swallowing statue-esque cheekbones. At times, oversize glasses designers relied on as accoutrements for their collections felt less like accessories and more like wearable attitude amplifiers.

The trend has been brewing for a few months, but it hit a tipping point this season. At Tory Burch, oversize frames added an air of polished anonymity. Saint Laurent leaned into exaggerated proportions that amplified the drama of its sharp tailoring and hearkened to founder Yves Saint Laurent's classic eyewear. Balenciaga treated sunglasses like futuristic armor, while Celine revived the bug-eye silhouette with a distinctly Jackie O energy. Collectively, the message was impossible to miss: Fashion wants its sunglasses to be loud again.

There's something undeniably appealing about eyewear that refuses to blend in. In an era dominated by personal style, statement dressing, and images designed to stop a scroll, freaky sunglasses offer instant impact. If the tiny sunglasses trend of the late 2010s was about having an air of nonchalance, today's bug-eyed supersize frames are about declaring presence. Balenciaga's newly installed creative director, Pierpaolo Piccioli, won't try to sugarcoat it. “This collaboration came to life for very personal reasons. I simply like Manolo. That’s it," Piccioli said in a statement. Fair enough! "I know him personally and have admired him for a long time," he continued. "To me, Manolo Blahnik is synonymous with elegance, and as he’s Spanish, like Cristóbal Balenciaga, there’s a certain shared sensibility there."

The new collab consists of three crystal-embellished styles: slingback heels, slingback kitten heels, and slingback mules. The first style comes in four different colors: black, gray, yellow, and green. Meanwhile, the kitten heels come in black and purple, and the mules come in black and green. "Asymmetrical crystal leaf ornaments are hand-embroidered to drape across a low-cut vamp, echoing Blahnik’s distinct flair for applying equal parts preciosity and grace, fusing jewelry with footwear," Balenciaga explained in a press release. We made it! Finally, it's the first Monday in May, which means that the chicest celebrities and tastemakers are busy ascending the famous steps at the Metropolitan Museum of Art for the 2026 Met Gala. This year, the museum will display an exhibition titled Costume Art, with the ball's dress code being Fashion Is Art. Guests were asked to "express their own relationship to fashion as an embodied art form and celebrate the countless depictions of the dressed body throughout art history," and so far, many have done what they were told. (There are always a rogue few who don't, a daring choice given how often non-thematic looks are met with negative reviews.) Naturally, cohost Beyoncé knows better, rising to the occasion like she always does—and doing so alongside her daughter Blue Ivy Carter, who made her Met Gala debut tonight.

For tonight's ball, Beyoncé's first in a decade, the Cowboy Carter singer chose to work with Balmain's former creative director, designer Olivier Rousteing, together creating a silver, skeletal naked dress fit with a matching crown à la her sister Solange's Heavenly Bodies: Fashion and the Catholic Imagination headpiece from 2018 and a feather cape. (In 2016, at her last Met Gala, she dressed in a peach-colored latex number by Givenchy.) The crown wasn't the only embellished accessory she wore, though. With it, she worked with Chopard, curating a mix of diamond pieces, including a necklace in 18K white gold with one 6.41-carat brilliant-cut diamond and 140 carats of additional diamonds. And that's not counting the bracelet, earrings, and rings.

Her daughter went a simpler route, donning a white, strapless bubble dress with a shorter hemline that perfectly showed off her Cinderella-esque pumps and a coordinating bomber jacket, both by Balenciaga. A diamond necklace with a yellow diamond pendant was the star, while her brown cat-eye sunglasses gave her look a feeling of unbothered coolness that only a 14-year-old girl could pull off. Yes, she's 14, and yes, we're feeling old too.

On the red carpet, Beyoncé was the picture of a proud mom, saying, “She looks so beautiful," about her daughter. "It’s incredible to be able to share [her first Met Gala] with her.” She also praised her daughter’s red carpet posing, saying, “She was ready! She is ready.”

I was recently at a dinner party where someone was wearing the cutest little poncho, and I immediately wanted to know where it was from. It turned out to be a British label called Cecilie Telle. It felt like perfect timing because, just days earlier, I had been telling a friend that ponchos and capes were making a comeback, and she almost didn't believe me.

Not long after that conversation, she sent me a post of Emily Dawn Long wearing her namesake brand's River Shawl with the caption, "She's a top. She's a shawl. She's a scarf. She's a blanket"—half-jokingly responding with, "Ponchos and capes are in," finally getting what I meant.

A couple of weeks later, I saw another one at a birthday party. Then I noticed one in Paloma Wool's S/S 26 show, which made me take another look through the spring/summer runway shows. Capes and ponchos were in Balenciaga's, Dior's, Paloma Wool's, and Valentino's collections as well. After multiple sightings, from NYC to Instagram to the runways, my suspicion was confirmed: Ponchos and capes are definitely go-to layers for spring.

Since I tend to run cold, even during the warmer months, I like having something cozy to throw on when it cools off in the evenings, when I'm heading into a restaurant, and when I'm taking the train. With capes and ponchos, I love how lightweight and easy to move in they are. I've been eyeing Cecilie Telle's Round Long Poncho and the under-$200 Cashmere-Wool Blend Poncho from J.Crew along with other options from brands such as COS, Massimo Dutti, Nüülee, Pucci, and more.

Pierpaolo Piccioli has a tough job at Balenciaga. Heading a brand as big as this one comes with responsibilities that include pleasing shoppers who, prior to his arrival, were buying a very different aesthetic than the one the house is traditionally known for and satisfying buyers who desire a return to the Balenciaga of yore, when its founder, Cristóbal Balenciaga, established the house's codes. Piccioli's work is elegant, refined, and sophisticated, which is why so many Balenciaga traditionalists praised the brand's choice to bring him on. Demna—who left in 2025 and is now the creative director at Gucci—followed a more alternative direction during his decade-long tenure at the brand, leaning into streetwear and grunge-forward style. This is what makes Piccioli's task at hand such a difficult one. He has to meet the demands of both groups, not isolating those who've been shopping from the brand these last 10 years while also bringing in new and returning customers who desire a look that's more in line with Cristóbal Balenciaga's original vision.

Piccioli, who debuted his sophomore collection for Balenciaga this weekend during Paris Fashion Week, did just that, easing into his still-new position by checking off both customer bases' core boxes. According to the collection notes, "the centrality of and focus on the human form" for fall 2026 expanded the methodologies of Cristóbal Balenciaga, with "the body itself [becoming] the structure inside garments." The couturier's influence continued in the formal gowns that were strewn throughout the 81-look offering, ranging from beaded and sequined numbers that glittered with every step to equally elegant but less intricate draped-jersey options that revealed bits of skin and hugged the body in all the right places. Also featured, though, were casual, laid-back ensembles with leggings and cigarette jeans as focal points styled with furry outerwear and voluminous leather bomber jackets in bright, daring shades—nods back to the streetwear many have come to associate with Balenciaga.

"Different generations walk together in clothes created to symbiotically fuse them as a collective power yet celebrate them as individual forces united in being," the collection notes state. The Balenciaga of old and new found a home in the fall/winter 2026 offering, ushering in an entirely new era for the house Cristóbal Balenciaga built that blends both.

What is ClairObscur?

This aforementioned sense of duality also showed itself in an entirely different way in the collection. The fall/winter 2026 offering was titled ClairObscur, in reference to a High Renaissance art technique of the same name that explores the tension between darkness and light. "Light defined by its shadow, darkness always relieved with light," the collection notes describe. "The collection finds an interplay in these inherent antinomies, the certitude and truth that one cannot exist without the other." Clair-obscur effects can be seen on handbags, like the Midnight City and HG Avenue bags as well as d'orsay sneakers and expertly draped gowns.

Euphoria x Balenciaga

Anyone excited about the long-awaited new season of Euphoria got a hint of what's to come at the Balenciaga show. Piccioli teamed up with Euphoria creator Sam Levinson for the event, creating a backdrop for the collection's reveal that included clips from the forthcoming third season. To add emphasis to the collaboration, the soundtrack for the runway show featured tracks by one of Euphoria's newest cast members, Rosalía, and Labrinth, the singer-songwriter responsible for some of the show's most iconic scores. Another newcomer to the series, Danielle Deadwyler, sat front row and was featured on prints throughout the collection. Deadwyler also read out a line of text to kick off the show: "The forms of bodies could not be understood in detail, but for shadow—shadows are created by light."

It's 2012 Again

It's true: 2010s fashion is back, and Balenciaga's F/W 26 show is the final piece of proof we needed to make the era's sartorial return official. Let us explain. First, there were the apparel and accessories references, including ombré throughout, particularly on handbags, as well as leggings, cigarette jeans, platforms with cheeky peep-toe details, and sleek leather bomber jackets in bright shades like fuchsia and red. Then, of course, there was Josh Hutcherson, aka Peeta Mellark from The Hunger Games (2012), sitting in the front row. (Granted, he was there with the rest of his I Love LA costars, but we can't help but to think of him in THG first.) Micro minidresses and thigh-high moto boots only added to the 2010s aesthetic.

All-New Bags

Balenciaga's handbag selection has been especially buy-worthy over the last few seasons, and the Rodeo, specifically, has dominated in a landscape that's stocked with beautiful options. But the brand isn't resting on its laurels. Instead, Piccioli used the fall/winter 2026 show as an excuse to up the ante, debuting a handful of new styles and updated takes on existing ones, all of which will be spotted around the fashion world in a few months. The new Balenciaga bags include the HG Avenue bag and the George bag, two instant classics. Piccioli also showcased the Midnight City bag, a fresh take on the brand's iconic City bag that features the clair-obscur effect.

Hudson Williams: Balenciaga's New Face

Heated Rivalry star Hudson Williams has been making the rounds during fashion month, popping up in New York, Milan, and now Paris for the Balenciaga show. In February, the Canadian actor appeared alongside Harris Dickinson, Winona Ryder, and others in the brand's summer 2026 campaign, with Balenciaga calling him a "friend of the house" in a press release. A month later, he's sitting front row alongside both of his aforementioned costars in the campaign as well as the cast of I Love LA. Oh, and Piccioli's pup. For the occasion, Williams wore all black, including a smooth-leather bomber jacket and a matching handbag. Will he be announced as an official brand ambassador before the fall 2026 collection debuts in stores? Only time will tell.

Paying homage to Cristobal Balenciaga's innovation and touching on house codes from predecessors, Piccioli's Balenciaga made a return to modern elegance, with nods to the streetwear and futurism that the house has also been known for. Piccioli's first designed bag for the house makes reference to Cristóbal Balenciaga's first Paris Couture presentation. He paid homage to his home country’s traditional Spanish dress (he was from Getaria), including a bolero. This bag translates that silhouette with a rounded base, featuring a zipper on top and at the very bottom to create a forward opening, complete with the house logo at the handles.. It comes in both a medium and mini size, has a detachable strap for wearability, and is offered in a range of colors.

The spring/summer 2026 show was held in Paris’s seventh arrondissement. The Le 7 bag references that. It's modern yet timeless, cool yet sophisticated (very Balenciaga) that opens to feature an actual pochette inside the bag. 1. The Chloé Paddington

Twenty years after the first release on the spring/summer 2005 runways, the Chloé Paddington bag hit the runways once more for autumn/winter 2025. The pull was instant, drawing in a long waiting list that mirrored the original's extensive pre-orders, with stylish people setting their clocks against the launch time of this long-beloved bag.

The original style was created under the then Creative Director Phoebe Phil, a name that will come up again in this list of returning It bags. Whilst Chloé was and still is often associated with soft silhouettes and delicate palettes, the bag was a tougher stance, relaxed in its slouchy form, making it instantly a favourite amongst the fashion crowd.

2. The Mulberry Soft Bayswater

One of the most iconic Mulberry bags to date is the Bayswater. First launched back in 2003, the classic appeal and spacious interior launched this bag straight onto the arms of It girls everywhere. Naturally, it never truly fell out of favour, and with a devoted following, Mulberry looked to reinvent the style for the modern day; enter the Mulberry Soft Bayswater.

Whilst many of the It bags on the list have received a serious amount of hype, the Soft Bayswater has quietly become the IYKYK bag that the original always was. 3. Balenciaga City

Originally introduced as the Motorcycle bag in 2001, Balenciaga's It accessory broke away from the more structured silhouettes of the previous decade. The ease of the bag brought a vintage, well-loved feel to the style that, alongside the lack of distinct branding, saw the bag become an insider favourite fast, as supported by a series of sightings on celebrities such as Kate Moss and Sienna Miller. The hardware detailing that eluded to the biker feel set the bag apart from polished styles as a bag that could bring an edge to luxury.

The lightweight form, the attached mirror and the longer shoulder strap ensured the bag became a practical companion for the everyday. Since it's release, the bag has become known as the City bag, even renaming itself as Le City for its easy everyday appeal. Sightings of the style continued over the years, but in 2025 a renewed interest was awoken, as even two decades later the bag still held its distinct look and eternal appeal.

4. The Miu Miu Metalassé

Rather than the return of a bag, has come the return of a handbag motif: Matelassé. First introduced on the 2006 autumn/winter runway, the pleated leather effect on the handbag quickly became an iconic feature of Miu Miu's designs, and now it's set for a return.

Be it clothing or accessories, there's a joy-filled vein that runs through all of Miu Miu's creations, and the tactile ruching of the Matelassé lends itself perfectly to the brand's aesthetic. It's a sweet edge, sometimes lent into with sugary sweet pastels or juxtaposed with more distressed effects. Either way, it's a clear iconography for the brand

For 2025, the soft ruched motif has been applied to a series of new and returning icons. The Wander and the Arcadie are gaining traction with every day, both of which feature this pleated treatment. 5. The Fendi Spy Bag

As soon as the news arrived that Fendi was reissuing the Spy Bag, I knew I had to get my hands on it. A few months ago, I took the bag out for a day, and fell in love, once again, with the playful yet elegant appeal of the style.

First unveiled on the spring/summer 2005 runways, the Fendi Spy Bag quickly grew a cult following that launched the bag into the same stratosphere as the beloved Baguette and coveted Peekaboo. The dumpling shape is iconic of the bag, with double handles moulded from the bag's body, and a flap closure with a secret. Inside, a hidden pocket can be found, storing your most treasured possessions close to hand.

Whilst the original Spy bag came in a series of neutrals, bold shades and pattern mixing, the new version feels like an elegant older sister. The leather has been smoothed and softened, the handles less textured, taking on a twisted effect instead. The colourways, too, show the evolution of the style, ranging from classic black to rich burgundy.

6. The Louis Vutton Speedy

The Louis Vuitton Speedy bag has a long history dating all the way back to the 1930s. First presented as a travel tote, the luggage brand expanded into everyday accessories, updating the Speedy along the way. The original was made in size 30, then came the variety in sizes to offer more versatility to the wearer. With the iconic Louis Vuitton monogramming, the bag was eye-catching, a nod to its luxurious and well-crafted origins, notes that continue with the current styles.

The Speedy has maintained its prominence in the handbag world over the years, with popularity rising every so often alongside noteworthy collaborations. The early 2000s saw the first time that Louis Vuitton collaborated with Takashi Murakami, bringing rainbow monogramming to the beloved Speedy bag and once again igniting fashion's adoration with the style. It came to define the decade, spotted on a series of celebrities, in films and featuring on wish lists across the globe. Twenty years on, the second drop arrived, and the Speedy once again was thrust into the limelight.

Whilst many counted down to the release of the second Louis Vuitton X Murakami collaboration, the appeal of the bag in its original colourways also returned. Over the past few months, stylish people have been adding the Speedy to baskets, unboxing their originals and searching resale sites to add this iconic style to their outfits.

7. The Celine Luggage

In the 2010s, it was rare to go a day without spying a Celine Phantom bag. Welcoming in the new decade, creative director at the time, Phoebe Philo, brought a sophisticated, structured tote to market, and the fashion crowd took note. Decades on, the current creative director, Michael Rider, has decided its time to bring it back.

From a mile off, the bag is still identifiable as a Celine bag, now with a fresh silhouette and accent detailing to show its progression to its 2025 form.

From Cristóbal Balenciaga’s pioneering silhouettes and innovation to Nicolas Ghesquière's futurism to Demna’s streetwear, Piccioli used the maison's archives as a jumping-off point for his first collection, all while making it distinctly his own vision. The artful blend of 1950s glamour with the modern references that permeated the looks on the runway were unmistakably Balenciaga. "A new development for the Maison, introduced in the Summer 2026 collection by Creative Director Pierpaolo Piccioli, Balenciaga’s neo gazar fabric is inspired by the original gazar textile devised by Cristobal Balenciaga in 1958," a press release shared on the innovation. "It shares its inherent sculptural properties, affording the achievement of exceptional amplitude through cut alone."

As an editor who appreciates a good handbag, I’m always on the lookout for the newest it style that will dominate the fashion scene, and this is especially true as a new season approaches. It took 15 years for House archivists to finally rediscover the 78-year-old perfume relic, but once they did, the brand decided to re-create the bottle in its exact form—down to the hand-tied cotton ribbon. And starting today, you can officially snag that slice of fashion history for your own vanity.

Le Dix is the definition of an olfactory time capsule; even its name, which translates to “the 10” in French, is a nod to the original Balenciaga Couture salon on 10 Avenue George V. Yet the juice inside is both nostalgic and unexpected, paying homage to the original icon while elevating it for today's sophisticated fragrance consumer. For example, it combines the blend's signature iris absolute with violet leaf and high-tech isolated iris aldehydes to amp up that vintage, powdery feel, as well as incense essential oils (a through line in the entire collection) to add a spicy, smoky complexity. Originally teased in its F/W 25 runway collection featuring sleek tracksuits and "destroyed" Speedcats, the collaboration has finally made an appearance off-runway since its release. Model Amelia Gray was spotted during Paris Fashion Week in a head-to-toe Puma look, including the new distressed Speedcats in black, that was equal parts sporty and chic. Gray has been a Puma fan for a while now, having just appeared in a campaign for the Puma Mostro last month. Considering her It-girl status and relationship with the brand, it just feels right that she would be the one to debut the new anticipated sneakers.

The Puma Speedcat was originally introduced in 1999 and has remained a go-to sneaker style for many over the years. Sneakers, in general, have been having a fun year of new drops and luxury brand collabs, but this style feels particularly special because it sits within Demna's last collection for Balenciaga.

Luxury sneaker collaborations tend to generate hype, and I can guarantee the fashion industry will be clamoring for this one. Demna's last bow at Balenciaga will always hold a special place in my heart. The game of musical chairs among creative directors isn't over just yet. The latest change stirring the fashion world is Pierpaolo Piccioli taking the creative director position at Balenciaga, following Demna's surprising departure to lead Gucci.

Piccioli, known for rejuvenating couture at Valentino with his poetic silhouettes and deep appreciation for craftsmanship, represents a significant shift from Demna's edgy, dystopian approach. While Balenciaga has defined itself over recent years with oversize streetwear and avant-garde pieces, Piccioli introduces a sense of understated beauty and deliberate elegance. Anticipate architectural tailoring, softened shapes, and a transition away from logo mania to designs that indicate luxury through technique rather than branding. Though his aesthetic may seem vastly different from Balenciaga's recent identity, Piccioli's understanding of form and silhouette resonates with the house's Cristóbal era.

Francesca Bellettini, Kering's Deputy CEO responsible for brand development, provided insight into her decision to appoint Piccioli as the creative head. "He is one of the most talented and celebrated designers of today," Bellettini said in a statement. "His mastery of Haute Couture, his creative voice, and his passion for savoir-faire made him the ideal choice for the House."

As for Piccioli's thoughts? "Balenciaga is what it is today thanks to all the people who have paved the way," he said in Monday's release. "In all its phases, while constantly evolving and changing, it has never lost track of the House’s aesthetic values. What I am receiving is a brand full of possibilities that is incredibly fascinating. I must first and foremost thank Demna; I’ve always admired his talent and vision. I couldn’t ask for a better passing of the torch."

One thing's clear: Piccioli's Balenciaga won't try to out-Demna Demna. Instead, it will focus on a more introspective, refined vision—an evolution that will redefine what "cool" looks like in 2025. Today, Balenciaga offers the City bag in several variations—Neo Classic, Classic City, and reissues of the original distressed leather. Mine was the Medium Classic in navy, which felt like the perfect balance between roomy and manageable.

Retail pricing for Balenciaga City bags varies depending on size and style, but you're looking at roughly $2700 to $3000 for current versions. That said, the most interesting activity is happening in the resale market, and the early 2000s models are coveted more than newer pieces. Some colors (pink, blue, yellow, and neon 2010-era limited releases) can run above retail by a significant amount despite showing signs of wear.

I have a lot of questions for Victoria Beckham. One being, What's your favourite of the 15 engagement rings David gifted you? When will we get a follow-up reality show to Victoria Beckham: Coming to America? I could go on. But no question is more pressing in my mind right now than this one: How on Earth did you get through airport security wearing Balenciaga's controversial Pantaleggings? 

The trousers in question were worn by Beckham on a flight into New York City's JFK Airport alongside a cinched cargo-style jacket, a black clutch bag, and oversize sunglasses of her own design. Essentially, they're leggings, but instead of cutting off at the ankle, they keep going all the way around a pair of attached stiletto heels. Named the Anatomic Pantaleggings, her exact style first debuted in Balenciaga's winter 2023 collection and features an even sharper heel than past versions. Basically, they're an airport security manager's worst nightmare, which is why I'm still left wondering how the former Spice Girls member made it past the scanners with her outfit intact.

I probably wouldn't follow her lead in this exact instance, but more power to anyone who wants to try.

I have a lot of questions for Victoria Beckham. Are you going to the fashion factory or getting a facial? What's your favorite of the 15 engagement rings David gifted you? When will we get a follow-up reality show to Victoria Beckham: Coming to America? I could go on. But no question is more pressing in my mind right now than this one: How on Earth did you get through TSA wearing Balenciaga's controversial Pantaleggings? 

The pants in question were worn by Beckham on a flight into New York City's JFK Airport alongside a cinched cargo-style jacket, a black clutch bag, and oversize sunglasses of her own design. Essentially, they're leggings, but instead of cutting off at the ankle, they keep going all the way around a pair of attached stiletto heels. Named the Anatomic Pantaleggings, her exact style first debuted in Balenciaga's winter 2023 collection and features an even sharper heel than past versions. Basically, they're TSA's worst nightmare, which is why I'm still left wondering how the former Spice Girls member made it past security with her outfit intact.

It's important to remember that we're talking about *the* Posh Spice, though. We all know that heels and a good outfit are paramount to the Beckham matriarch's happiness. We're not meant to question her sometimes daring fashion choices, even at the airport, where practicality almost always wins out over style. Clearly, she made it onto her flight and to NYC just fine. I probably wouldn't follow her lead in this exact instance, but more power to anyone who wants to try. 

On the off chance that you're not ready to press copy and paste on her Balenciaga bottoms but still want to mimic the overall airport ensemble, I went ahead and added a few pairs of leggings that don't have heels attached to them for you to shop ahead of your next trip.

Anyone who's visited Hailey Bieber's Instagram feed during Halloween knows that the model and entrepreneur loves a good holiday, especially when it means dressing to a theme. Now that we've entered into December territory, it appears that her outfits have switched over to another holiday. "Christmas glitter" is what she captioned an IG slideshow on Sunday, showcasing one of the chicest festive looks of the year thus far. 

To celebrate the holiday season's arrival, Bieber chose a long-sleeved minidress made of bone-colored satin from Khaite, which was paired with matching sparkly tights, a Prada top-handle bag, Balenciaga pumps, and a black velvet hair bow from Emi Jay. While her accessories certainly finished off the look, her dress was the star of the show, especially given how on-trend satin is at the moment. After a buzzy showing on the spring/summer 2024 runways at Tory Burch, Altuzarra, Carven, Louis Vuitton, and more, the luxurious material was destined to become a major deal in the year ahead. Now that Bieber has gone and stamped it with a Rhode Raspberry Jelly Peptide Lip–tinted kiss, any last doubts there were about the trend's popularity in 2024 were squashed for good.

I recently moved into a new place and while saying goodbye to my cozy one-bedroom bungalow was bittersweet, the expanded closet space was a welcome change, a celebration even! The brand-new empty walk-in was a blank canvas, my Marie Antoinette shoe-montage dreams finally feeling like a reality (yes, that iconic scene lives rent-free in my mind).

On Daisy Edgar-Jones: Chloé Sleeveless Mini Dress, bag, and Judith Studded Leather Mules ($950)

Arguably no dresses have caused quite as big a stir in 2024 as Chloé's boho frocks, worn most prominently by Daisy Edgar-Jones on the Twisters press tour, but also by Zoe Saldaña, Sienna Miller, and Sydney Sweeney. The viral dresses were designed by the French house's new creative director Chemena Kamali, whose elevated take on bohemian fashion has taken the industry by (pleasant) surprise.

The ascent of Taylor Russell is one many in Hollywood aspire to. The Canadian-born actor has been on the rise since starring in films such as A24's Waves and Escape Room in 2019, but it was with the 2022 Luca Guadagnino–directed film Bones and All that Russell officially arrived. The offbeat romantic horror (which co-stars Timothée Chalamet) received a 10-minute standing ovation at Cannes and won big at last year's Venice Film Festival, including a win for Russell for Best Young Actor or Actress. As 21st century as Russell's approach to red carpet dressing is, the actor also employs hints of Old Hollywood glamour. A vintage red carpet moment just hits differently—case in point, this archival Vivienne Westwood skirt suit. Revisiting runway history is a key aspect of why Russell is such a fashion force. You never know if you're going to get a gown straight from couture fashion week or a prim-and-proper suit from the '80s. The actor keeps us guessing, and that's hard to do in Hollywood.

What are some of the biggest trends that our audience should prioritize this fall?

So many different smaller aesthetics. The first one is 90s minimalism. For the past few seasons we've focused a lot on these really bold silhouettes and bright colors that have dominated. While those aren't necessarily going anywhere, I think for fall, what we're seeing is almost this palate cleanser.

It's a return to those really great wardrobe staples that are going to carry you way past fall. It almost feels like these are more investment buys—but with a strategic twist. Think: A low-slung trouser and lots of pared back tailoring and suiting.

What else are you interested in for fall in terms of overall trend?

There's another incoming aesthetic in town and I'm calling it "Biker core". It's all about embracing your inner biker chick. Think moto jackets, a lot of leather looks. Obviously leather trousers are going to be a big part of this. In general, we're also seeing hardware detailing, like zippers and buckles across accessories.

What about accessories trends?

Everything Balenciaga is absolutely dominating. The accessories from this new collection have gone viral. They have continued to be sold out everywhere and are on some of the coolest people's feeds right now and on everyone's fashion wish list.

As you might know, 10 or so years ago the Balenciaga 'City' bag was the It piece to have. It was on every celebrity from the Olsen sisters to Kate Moss. Now the creative director of Balenciaga has brought back the iconic moto-inspired bag, but with a new range of accessories.

When you think of truly iconic bags, the brands that are likely to come to mind first are ones like Chanel, Hermès, and Gucci. Typically, Cristóbal Balenciaga's namesake fashion house isn't at the top of the list. But while the classic handbag brands are certainly among our favorites, it's Balenciaga that's responsible for most of this year's buzziest accessories, from the Y2K-favorite Le Cagole to Kim Kardashian's go-to Hourglass.

In the early '00s, no bag was more ubiquitous among the street style set than the Balenciaga City bag, otherwise known as the Lariat or Motorcycle bag. Introduced by Ghesquière—who became the artistic director of womenswear at Louis Vuitton in 2013—in 2001, the bag was initially dismissed by his bosses, who insisted that the slouchy, structureless style wouldn't garner acclaim. Despite that, he convinced them to manufacture a handful of styles, and the City bag blew up, soon becoming the It style for everyone from Mary-Kate and Ashley Olsen to Kate Moss.

Balenciaga Gossip Bag

First introduced in the brand's Pre-Fall '21 lookbook, Balenciaga's Gossip line is among the brand's more understated styles, especially compared to the tassel-embellished Le Cagole and City bags. This has made it a favorite for Hailey Bieber, who wore the bag to one of Justin Bieber's concerts back in January. The timeless shoulder bag's most dominating feature is the double-B logo, which sits atop one large flap closure.

No bag has been embraced by the fashion set—including both celebrities and influencers—in 2022 quite like Balenciaga's Le Cagole Shoulder Bag. A follow-up to Balenciaga's best-selling Cagole bag, the Lindsay formally debuted with a campaign starring none other than Bella Hadid, who was wearing nothing but leather cut-away pants. The cool girl–approved style takes cues from the '90s and early aughts, featuring a structured shape, a chain-link shoulder strap, and oversize buckle closures. Chic? Yes. A must-own piece? Balenciaga Neo City Bag

When I tell you that I received so many compliments when I pulled this mini gray version of Balenciaga's Neo City bag out of its dust bag at the office, I'm 100% holding back. In reality, the reaction was 10 times that. Essentially the modernized version of Ghesquière's City bag from '01, the Neo City bag features all of the same tassels and embellishments as the early-aughts favorite with a slightly more structured and architectural shape. My favorite? The micro-mini style.

To be honest, before I saw Balenciaga's take on the basket bag, I was under the impression that the style was on its way out. After having a serious moment in the late '10s, woven totes had begun to feel a bit stale. I should have known that all they needed was Gvasalia's genius touch.

As much as I'd like to think that I know everything on the fashion horizon, the honest truth is that trend prediction isn't an exact science. Some build up in a slow crawl, eventually reaching an apex, and other trends seemingly appear spontaneously without much warning. Whether it's a feeling in the air or a very intentional embrace, sometimes, there's really no reason why specific trends capture everyone's attention at once. But as a fashion editor, when this happens, it's something you tend to notice. And I've definitely noticed them. 

One of the biggest unexpected trends to really take off this summer is lucite heels. Years ago, I distinctly remember saving up all year to buy a pair of Maryam Nassir Zadeh clear wedges. They were the It sandals of the time, and every fashion editor I knew had them. Lucite heels haven't been on my radar since, but surprisingly, they've had a bit of a comeback in 2022. Now, they're everywhere. The same goes for the corded heart pendant. Looking at it gives me instant flashbacks to my childhood in the '90s, and never in my wildest dreams did I think it would become the cult accessory that it is now. More pieces are unexpectedly winning the season—keep scrolling to read about them all.

Soft Ruffles

Love it or hate it, the Y2K influence has reached a pervasiveness that's difficult to ignore. One of the consequences is the revival of the soft ruffle. The iterations that are popping up today feature sheer, delicate fabrics that turn up the romance.

 Corded Pendant Necklaces

I've witnessed gold pendant chains become a thing as well as plenty of other necklace trends, but it's the first time I've seen the corded pendant necklace cause such a stir among fashion people. The hype arguably began with Sophie Buhai's Nautilus pendant necklace and Saint Laurent's $550 pendant choker, snowballing with a mass of affordable versions from there. It's a cool-girl trend that's easy to pull off. Just find a simple top with a great exposed neckline.

It's a pleasure to see lucite/clear/Cinderella heels make a comeback for another moment in the spotlight. They're extremely versatile and don't distract from a cool outfit.

Cargo Skirts

Off the heels of a cargo-pants summer, the cargo skirt has popped up as a staple of the season. It definitely falls more into the unconventional category, hence why I was surprised to see it resonate so strongly among the fashion set. Diesel's version quickly became an It-girl staple, so it was only a matter of time before other brands took note.

Almost 10 years ago, I bought a Balenciaga City bag. I carried it for a year straight, but since then, I have only periodically brought it out to play for a dose of nostalgia. After years of being a cult bag, post-2012 fervor over the signature bag slowly died down, dropping into the background. Fast-forward to 2022, and the iconic piece has been transformed by Demna Gvasalia into a collection of shoes and bags that have quickly gone viral. I never thought I'd see the day when my old bag would suddenly become relevant again, but I'm welcoming it with open arms.
