(And no, I’m not just referring to the length.) “Modern brides are more empowered than ever to make choices that genuinely reflect who they are,” Sealy adds. “Marriage no longer feels like a rigid rite of passage; it’s a personal milestone, so the dress doesn’t need to follow a prescribed formula.”

“I think a short wedding dress carries an inherent sense of confidence,” acknowledging that they put the focus on the woman, not just the gown. “It's the opposite of the prescribed norm, whilst feeling fresh, intentional, and fun. It also offers freedom—both literally and stylistically—as it’s easier to move and enjoy the day without managing layers of fabric or a long train.”

This last point resonates with the way most brides are approaching their ceremonies, too. “Short wedding dresses reflect how weddings themselves have evolved—smaller guest lists, city ceremonies, destination celebrations, and multi-day events,” Sealy continues. “They suit that modern pace and versatility, and lean into a sense of individuality rather than excess.”

As for wearing one well? “It’s definitely all in the details and styling! Sheer layers instantly elevate a shorter length, or you can play with volume by adding a dramatic sleeve or detachable train. A veil, gloves, bold heels, or statement jewellery can transform a short dress into something unmistakably bridal while still feeling fashion forward.”

In 1954, for instance, Audrey Hepburn married Mel Ferrer wearing a Pierre Balmain dress at the Swiss resort's chapel. In the 1960s, Sophia Loren enjoyed Bürgenstock so much that she moved into a villa on the grounds. While filming the 1964 James Bond movie Goldfinger, Sean Connery and the rest of the cast and crew took up residence at the hotel. Presidents, prime ministers, diplomats, mayors, and chancellors from over 100 countries have walked its hallowed halls. Kings, queens, princes, and princesses, too. And don't for a second think that athletes have been left out—homegrown hero Roger Federer filmed a Uniqlo campaign at one of Bürgenstock's tennis courts in 2024.

When you combine Bürgenstock's history with its modern updates, world-famous spa, and dramatic setting rising over 1600 feet above Lake Lucerne, it's not hard to understand why I traveled nearly 6000 miles from Los Angeles to stay there. After years of pining for a visit, I simply had to go to Switzerland to see it for myself. Continue reading below for a peek inside my camera roll and my thoughts on the resort's accommodations, activities, dining, and more.

Planes, trains, and automobiles aren't the only forms of transport you can expect to utilize on your journey to Bürgenstock. First, I flew from Los Angeles to Zürich. After deplaning, I made my way to the train station, which was conveniently located directly underneath the airport, so I never had to go outside. An hour and 15 minutes later, I arrived in Lucerne, where I walked a short distance along the lake to a boat dock and boarded the resort's very own catamaran. Lastly, I hopped on the Bürgenstock Funicular, Switzerland's first electric cable car, which took me directly into the lobby. Was it worth the trek? Absolutely. I highly recommend taking the scenic boat and funicular for the full Swiss experience, but you can absolutely drive straight to the hotel if you prefer.

Sitting on 148 acres, the property includes 360 hotel rooms and suites, 17 residence suites, 12 restaurants, a 100,000-square-foot spa, 30 buildings, a golf course, a movie theater, a ballroom, and dozens of conference rooms. In other words, don't be shy about pocketing a map from the front desk.

Lots of hotels around the world have hosted famous people overnight, but how many can say that celebrities have actually lived there? As it happens, two of Hollywood's biggest names have taken up long-term residence at the Bürgenstock Resort: Sophia Loren, pictured bottom left in front of her villa on the grounds, and Audrey Hepburn, pictured top right wearing a Pierre Balmain dress with her husband Mel Ferrer at the resort's chapel. After marrying at Bürgenstock, Hepburn and Ferrer moved into a house on the property, which is where they welcomed their son, Sean, who was christened at the same chapel. Hepburn lived in several countries throughout her life, including Belgium, England, the Netherlands, and the United States, but Switzerland was known to be her favorite and is where she chose to be buried.

While Loren and Hepburn used Bürgenstock as an escape from the film industry, the James Bond franchise put the resort smack-dab in the middle of moviemaking magic. Sean Connery, pictured top left, and the cast and crew of the 1964 movie Goldfinger stayed at Bürgenstock while filming. The 007 flick even filmed scenes at the resort's Hollywood Pool and underground Bull's Eye Bar.

Hollywood isn't the only industry that's well acquainted with Bürgenstock. In 2024, the resort hosted the largest diplomatic event in Switzerland's history: the Summit on Peace in Ukraine, which drew 57 heads of state and 2000 staff members, security personnel, and journalists. Participants included representatives from 92 different countries.

What's there to do at the resort? A lot. The spa, in particular, is a huge draw for both guests and visitors, as you can purchase day passes. Even if you don't book a massage or facial, you can spend hours relaxing in the pools, saunas, steam rooms, cold plunges, and quiet areas. Yoga classes and manicures and pedicures are also available. Above all, you simply cannot miss the outdoor infinity pool (pictured top left), which is heated year-round.

As a huge tennis fan, I was also ecstatic to see the Diamond Dome Tennis Courts. You might recognize the picturesque courts from Roger Federer's Uniqlo spring/summer 2024 campaign. As far as I'm concerned, Rog is Switzerland's most important export—step aside, chocolate and watches!

Given its Hollywood connection, it makes sense that Bürgenstock has its own movie theater. I was still surprised, however, by just how big it was, with 69 plush leather seats and a giant screen rivaling an AMC. If you're more outdoorsy, you can also golf, hike, and bike nearby. Further afield, you can get to the ski slopes of Mount Titlis in about an hour.

You have a few distinct choices when booking a room at the resort. The two main buildings are the original Bürgenstock Hotel & Alpine Spa and the newer, wellness-focused Waldhotel by Bürgenstock, which was added in 2017. For a cozier experience, you can stay in one of the 12 quaint rooms at Taverne 1879. If you're craving more space and privacy, you can choose apartment-style accommodations at the Bürgenstock Residence Suites.

I stayed in the original hotel, but after touring the entire property, I'm confident that you can't go wrong with any option. You'll also need to consider whether you want a lake view or a mountain view, but again, there are no bad choices here. Any way you slice it, you're guaranteed to receive a luxury experience befitting of a five-star hotel.

Switzerland's dining scene goes well beyond its famous fondue. (That said, you aren't allowed to leave without ordering some melted Gruyère cheese. I don't make the rules.) At Bürgenstock Resort, the food options across 12 restaurants are impressively varied.

Situated on a platform overhang, Spices Kitchen & Terrace, pictured bottom right, is arguably the star of the show. I couldn't decide what blew me away more: the restaurant's panoramic vistas or its delicious menu. As for the former, I enjoyed being seated with a view of the funicular's charming red carriages. The vast food selection offers a mix of Japanese, Chinese, Indian, and Thai cuisines, including sashimi, dim sum, Pad Thai, chicken satay, curry dishes, and more.

Over at Restaurant Taverne, pictured top right, you can nosh on traditional Swiss dishes like älplermagronen, a twist on macaroni and cheese. Whether you're a cocktail connoisseur or prefer some afternoon tea, plan on spending time at the Lakeview Bar and Cigar Lounge. That's where I posted up with my laptop before my cab to the airport arrived, but it was hard to stare at a screen when I could gaze at Lake Lucerne through floor-to-ceiling windows. Can you blame me?

I have no notes for her or her stylist, Dani Michelle, and I almost always have at least some sort of opinionated take on celebrity style. Since then, life got busier and the internet happened, so my infatuation with old movies took a backseat, but I recently was reminded of the aforementioned Sabrina and upon taking a look back, I came to a new realization about the film: It's where my French-girl infatuation began. Hepburn doesn't play a French girl, per se, but in the film, her character Sabrina has just returned from a long stay in Paris, seemingly having adopted the French-girl aesthetic along the way. Between the ballet flats, elegant LBDs, gamine cropped trousers, and coy midi dresses, every look was classic French girl. The already delightful film was made even more delightful by the fact that Paramount costume designer Edith Head worked with Hepburn's frequent wardrobe collaborator Hubert de Givenchy to design her costumes for Sabrina.

What to wear? This predicament is greatly heightened when the occasion in mind is your wedding day. Fashion editors are not immune to the bridal pressure cooker either; if anything, it adds more gravity to people’s expectations. The lead-up to my wedding involved the usual whirlwind of questions facing a newly engaged woman: What dress would I go for? How would I wear my hair? Which designer would I choose? The hunt was on for the dream dress but it just didn’t go as well as I’d hoped.

Being curvy, tall and a lover of carbs, I couldn’t imagine myself in something slinky, nor did I want to go down the meringue route. I made multiple appointments to try on wedding gowns but my heart didn’t flutter. Quite the contrary, I felt doomed to look like an avalanche of crêpe de chine. I just couldn’t find a 360-degree fit for my shape that oozed my style. As options narrowed and lunch breaks were filled up with snow flurries of manic dress searches, I called it quits on bridal pret-à-porter. The dress just didn’t exist. Yet.

The haute pursuit begins! If something is classed as couture, then it means that a piece is made-to-measure for your body. You can choose a designer dress from a collection and have it fitted exclusively to your shape. Wonderful, but what if you want to go one step further and design your own garment? One could save up £200,000 and hit the marble halls of Paris where an exclusive design is made for you from one of the prestigious haute couture fashion houses, but considering there's a minority of regular global customers, this is unlikely for most.

If you don't own a yacht or have six digits to spare, then fear not, another option is available. You could find a British-based dress designer costume designer who can make a gown especially for you. Some call it design couture—a process that includes a toile of your body, an exclusive design, a garment made in-house, and personal fittings to underscore the design process. Bridal-designers-cum-courtiers are like gold dust because only a select few fashion houses make one-of-kind gowns; the industries main focus is on ready-to-wear. I found the right one via recommendations from friends at Brides magazine, but some determined Google searches would unearth your local options.

Who What Wear UK: There’s so much to organize for a wedding day. How important is it to share information about the event planning with the dress designer?

Anita Massarella: It’s very helpful to know as much as possible. I like to get a background of the bride’s wedding vision, and if there’s a storyboard or Pinterest link to ideas then that helps me to get a sense of the couple’s personality.

WWW UK: What questions do you often ask the bride about the wedding plans?

AM: Is the day going to be formal or more relaxed? In a grand venue or outdoors? Home or abroad? Even if the bride is still forming a plan for her big day, it’s helpful to know the wider context so that together we can create a suitable design for the season. As soon as the colour theme for the venue is decided, it’s important to inform your dress designer so that it can be reflected in little flourishes on the garment, if at all.

WWW UK: It’s hard to know what credentials to look out for in a fashion house or dressmaker. How do you identify where to go?

AM: If you cannot find what you want in ready-to-wear (i.e. off-the-peg collections) then having something designed uniquely for you is a great option. Enquire if the designer can offer exclusive designs or to what extent they customise dresses. We create one-of-a-kind couture dresses but not all places do. It's also okay to ask how many years of experience the designer has. Do read the client testimonials on their social media and website; it’s clear when a brand has a good reputation. You ideally want a team that can deliver the entire package: create an exclusive design to suit you, produce the dress pattern, make the dress in-house and provide the professional fittings.

WWW UK: Where do most of your brides get their dress ideas from?

AM: Mainly Instagram, Pinterest or cut-outs from society events in the back of Vogue, Tatler etc. I’ve noticed that when people look at photos from formal events, like polo or Ascot, then it’s easier to see a range of different clothing designs worn by real people with varying figures. It can be less daunting than looking at models.

WWW UK: Once you’ve found the right person to collaborate with and to make your dress, what’s the best way to kick-start the design process?

AM: You don’t need to know the fabric or design terminology, a good designer can interpret what you want by the way you describe what you like. For example, an experienced designer will be able to tell from a photo if the bride wants something soft, bias-cut and clings to the body, and billowing chiffon coming from the back of it, or if the structure of the dress needs to boned, corseted, stiff dress etc.

WWW UK: There are so many different fabrics to choose from. How do you pick the right one?

AM: Identify how you would like your dress to move and sit on your body. If you want it to sway and flow, then chiffon is perfect for that. If you want a stiff dress then gabardine holds its shape; but this where the designer's expertise comes in. Just remember that the style of the dress needs to work with the choice of fabric.

WWW UK: How do you get ideas into one cohesive design?

AM: Begin with an outline of a body sketched on a piece of paper. Drawing out ideas is a great starting point. I tend to go step-by-step from talking about what neckline would suit the client to the favoured sleeve length, how it fits the waist etc. At each stage, you need to consider how the design works as a whole and how to keep it all in proportion with your shape.

WWW UK: When the design is agreed, what’s the next step?

AM: The next stage is finalising which fabrics will be used in the lining, for the main body of the dress. This process involves looking at lots of fabric samples with your designer and exploring which shades suit your complexion. I go as far as including the bride in choosing the very buttons and hand-picking the beads that will be sewn on! You can decide which beads, what colours, what shade, what size! If you’re making a dress from scratch, you can even cherry-pick embellishments or fabrics that suit the shade of your eyes.

WWW UK: How can a bride get the most out of dress fittings?

AM: Wear a really good fitting bra, and the heels that you are going to wear on the day (or of a similar height) because that will affect your posture. A good designer will offer you the opportunity to make adjustments at your fitting. Do take the opportunity to amend the design slightly or be more bold with decisions, like lowering a neckline slightly or exaggerating the silhouette of the dress by asking for the fabric to be nipped in a little.

WWW UK: On a second fitting, is it a good idea to bring the extra outfit details?

AM: Absolutely! The second fitting is where you can road test all of the elements of your look to see what works. If you’re having a hair trial then come in for a fitting with the hair and makeup trial. It’s also a good chance to try out the veil to make sure all the final pieces come together. If you are having a tryout for your bouquet, bring it in at this point. Then you can check that everything is perfect. Don’t be afraid to point out details that you want to be tweaked. And when you have your final fitting, do bring a bottle of chilled champagne and your best friend and/or your mother to soak in the fun of it all!

We've long considered the late great film star Audrey Hepburn one of our greatest style icons. And her son Sean Ferrer told U.S. Vogue that tweens and teens now make up 50% of her fanbase, proving her style is truly timeless. "People have always talked about her grace [and wondered], What was the secret of her elegance? What was her system? What was her style?" he said, and these are questions he's planning on answering in a book about her style, which will be released in 2018.
