It seems like every cool person is rocking them this year (Zoë Kravitz, Suki Waterhouse, and Lily Allen, to name a few), and it's likely because bangs are timeless and have been in fashion consistently since the early 19th century, evolving with the ebb and flow of modern hair trends.

“Bangs have this transformative quality—they immediately frame the face and create emotion,” celebrity hairstylist Adir Abergel tells Who What Wear. “There’s something incredibly intimate about them too, like they tell a story without saying a word.” He points out that bangs are just as much of a beauty signature as they are a fashion statement. “In the cooler months, they work well with layered textures like scarves, hats, or even a hoodie,” he adds. “It’s softness and structure at once.”

If you’re unsure which style to request when you plant yourself in your hairstylist’s chair, you’re in luck. Three celebrity hairstylists sounded off on the top bangs styles today, which frame your face shape best (spoiler alert: whichever feels best for you), and how to care for your fringe once it’s snipped. Types of Bangs

Curtain Bangs

If you’re looking to cut starter bangs, there’s no more frequently recommended style than curtain bangs. They're categorized by their face-framing, typically longer fringes that rival layers. These bangs part in the center or side of the forehead and sweep to the sides of the face. “Curtain bangs remain the number one option people ask for,” muses celebrity hairstylist Clayton Hawkins. “It’s pretty universally flattering and not too much of a commitment.”

Celebrity hairstylist Jackie Seabrooke also vouches for this style for indecisive bang-lovers due to its universally flattering silhouette. “Curtain bangs are the most versatile and suit many face shapes… because [they are] center-part focused and tailored to frame the eyes and cheekbones,” she explains. This way, you can experiment with different lengths to see which variation feels right to you.

Bardot Bangs

For something a bit fuller and bolder, give Bardot bangs a shot. They were popularized by the '60s French movie star Brigitte Bardot, and these swooping, full fringes have since been spotted on the likes of Nicole Kidman, Demi Moore, and Sabrina Carpenter, to name a few. Recently sported by Kidman, one of Abergel's starry clientele, this style reinterprets Bardot's influential, thick fringe through a modern lens.

"These bangs leaned into an effortless, early '70s French vibe," he explains. According to Abergel, the modern-day take on this style is wispier, evoking a look that is "delicate but intentional." "I love the soft texture, lived-in movement, and iconic French-girl nonchalance of this look," he adds.

Wispy Bangs

One of the most-requested styles nowadays—if not the curtain bang—is wispy fringe, or what Abergel affectionately calls "Birkin bangs" after Jane Birkin's iconic shear. Seabrooke describes this feathered style as "peekaboo, barely there strands," and shouts out this cut as a great way to test out bangs before committing to the bit. Take Lisa Manoban's silky style, which flutters across her forehead lightly and works whether straight, wavy, or curly.

"They have that signature softness and [an] undone quality that never goes out of style," muses Abergel. "The middle is subtly shorter, giving that openness to the eyes, while the sides flow into the cut for a more undone, natural feel," he describes. Much like curtain bangs, this style is wonderful for someone seeking versatility. Take Camila Cabello's fringe, for instance, as she often oscillates between her natural texture and blow-dried strands with ease—which Abergel says is the whole point.

"As the weather warms, fringe should feel flexible—something you can wear forward with attitude or effortlessly push aside as the season heats up." If you're looking for a benchmark between full fringe and curtain bangs, this is your style.

Curly Bangs

Bangs are a commitment, no doubt—which is why your selected style should work with your hair type. Luckily, bangs aren't sequestered to one specific kind, and curly hair types are a smash with feathery fringe. Take Zendaya's cascading spiral shear, dusting her brows and adding dimension to her long style.

Carpenter's signature curtain bangs are often worn in her natural curly style, which gives her fringe a whole new life, and breakout star Odessa A'zion mesmerized us with her bendy fringe at the 2026 Critics' Choice Awards. Seabrooke describes this type of bangs as a standout because it "plays into natural curl patterns and waves," offering more versatility and less hair damage due to infrequent use of heat. The trick here is to utilize curl cream for that extra boost of hydration, to tame frizz, and offer style-preserving hold.

Blunt Bangs

If you're ready to approach bangs head-on, you'll want to ask your stylist for a blunt cut. Not only is this style classic and sharp, but it's getting an ever-so-slight facelift in 2026. "Gen Z alternative girls are loving a choppy little blunt bang," says Hawkins. Take, for example, Megan Thee Stallion's ultra-sharp, sleek fringe clipped just below the brows and styled pin-straight.

For something a bit more lived-in, reference Lily Allen's signature thick bangs. "These are romantically cut to fall effortlessly straight across the eyebrows," explains Seabrooke. Allen's style includes the full, blunt style that Megan donned, just with a choppier trim. That said, because this fringe style is so full, it's easy to mold them into different shapes should you choose. Mess them up with a bit of texturizing spray to get a shaggier look, or kiss them with a touch of styling oil for a sleek look. It's easy to achieve different variants with the right tools and products.

Micro Bangs

Behold, baby bangs: one of 2026's hottest hair trends yet. Kravitz is one of the latest celebs to grab my attention with her curly, forehead-dusting fringe, which looks extra chic in the side-swept style she wore at the 2025 Academy Museum Gala. Seabrooke calls this "bold, ultra-short fringe" a definite fashion statement, being slightly unconventional and considered a bit more high fashion than longer styles.

"Going into spring, I’m drawn to bangs that feel light and intentional. Like the one we just created on Kristen Stewart," says Abergel of trendy micro bangs. Stewart's iteration—a choppier, piece-y shear—speaks to the star's rugged, yet refined style and takes a wispier approach than Kravitz's. For something that feels fresh, modern, and sure to impress the style set, micro bangs are the ones to try.

Side Bangs

What Hawkins calls "the biggest surprise" is the imminent return of side bangs. "The millennial side bang swoop resurgence is on the horizon," he indulges, spotlighting a recent iteration he crafted on Kiernen Shipka. "It kind of tore," he laughs. Marked by the early aughts (and often paired with choppy layers and stripey highlights—a sign of the times), this style is returning with an elevated, fashionable vengeance. Even Rihanna wore it, which means we need to be writing this down.

Seabrooke labels this style as another one to try if you're looking for room to play instead of a set style. "Side-swept bangs are really versatile because they can be styled with a middle part or a side part, which is really flexible if you like to wear your hair different ways," she explains. That said, Hawkins warns that you'll need a healthy amount of hair spray to make this look last. "I used tons of Sexy Hair Spray and Play to lock it into place just like I did back when I was a teenager doing hair in the MySpace days," he recalls from Shipka's styling session.

How to Choose the Right Bangs for Your Face Shape

Let me start by saying that there is no right or wrong style of bangs for your face shape—there’s just personal preference. “Just do you and cut your hair in a way that makes you feel hot!” quips Hawkins. Now, if you feel lost and want something of a guidebook to follow when preparing for your next appointment, Abergel has a few tips.

“Before suggesting a bang, I always begin by pulling all the hair back and allowing the face to fully reveal itself,” says Abergel. “I look for the widest point—whether it’s the forehead, the cheekbones, or the jaw—and then observe the quality of the jawline: is it soft or angular? These details guide me in understanding the architecture of the face, helping me determine whether I’m working with a square, round, oval, or heart shape.” After this step, Abergel can determine if the bangs become a “thoughtful extension of the face, not just a haircut.”

How to Care for Bangs

• Use dry shampoo: Hawkins calls dry shampoo a bang-haver's best friend. "I’m obsessed with Sexy Hair’s Volumizing Dry Shampoo because it doesn't leave a cast and [will] keep your fringe from getting greasy," he recommends.
• Get flat clips: These kinds of clips are great for keeping your hair in place while you get ready to work against your hairline and any cowlicks. "Flat clips are gonna be a savior when trying to 'train' your hair to do what you want," Hawkins adds.
• Start with primer: Bangs can get easily damaged from excessive heat, so be sure to use a protective primer. Abergel recommends Virtue's Hair Volumizing Primer, which smooths and protects your strands from heat. "Then direct a blow dryer at the roots on low heat and low speed," he adds. "Use a round brush [to] smooth out that texture."
• Set with velcro rollers: "Depending on your texture, I’m not mad at a velcro roller," says Hawkins. Abergel also recommends these heatless tools, which he uses as a final step after blow-drying. "Once [the bangs] are fully dry, set them with a velcro roller away from the face for a minimum of five minutes," he instructs. "This allows for the cuticle to cool off and sets the style in place."

How often should you trim your bangs?

On average, Abergel recommends getting a light trim every two weeks to maintain your style. But if you have a relatively uncomplicated cut (and a steady hand), Clayton recommends learning how to keep up your length at home. "If you have straight-across bangs that graze your brows, I would invest in a decent pair of scissors (don’t spend more then $60, but don’t spend less than $30), attend a few classes at YouTube University, and teach yourself how to point cut your bangs so you’re not in the salon every ten days," Hawkins half-jokes, half-advises. If you haven't heard of Los Angeles–based styling duo Chloe and Chenelle Delgadillo, you'll definitely recognize their impressive, star-studded list of clientele, including Olivia Rodrigo, Addison Rae, and Rosalía. Now, the sibling creative team has entered the world of motorsports by crafting a series of incredible looks for Tate McRae's latest music video for "Just Keep Watching" from the official F1 soundtrack.

We got a chance to chat with the Delgadillos about this amazing opportunity. The duo share a candid look into what it was like to create this iconic music moment on set.

"We loved seeing it all come to life! Every department was full of talented people that made the collaborative process smooth. It's rare to be in a room with a team that is so open to each others opinions," they explained.

When watching the video, it becomes really clear that a lot of care went into making sure all the looks have an elevated feel. The Delgadillos took a lot of details into consideration when planning each outfit.

"Everything starts with the mood board, and for this project in particular, we had very futuristic and specific direction to follow with how the sets were going to be. Once we saw everything coming to life, we realized all of the looks needed to be sleek and simple for Tate to shine. We didn't want to overshadow her with over-the-top looks. All the looks were very intentional," said the sisters.

Outfit #1: Endurance

Chenelle: Tate looks so good in Tom Ford Gucci pieces. We were loving his swimwear on her but wanted to create an athletic look the wasn't on-the-nose "athlete." This look read sexy and sleek while still giving a nod to endurance.

Outfit #2: Void

Chenelle: Tom Ford described his YSL S/S 03 collection as "surreal but subtle." We wanted Tate to embody this by seeming dreamlike and unattainable in the most stripped-back way. Being the first look of the video, we used this as the foundation for the rest of the looks.

Outfit #3: Topcoat

Chloe: This is Tate's final moment reflecting a car's "final topcoat" before it's ready to be used. We wanted her to pop in front of all the drivers but still feel like this look lived in the same world as all of the other looks. Having one pop of color here was really effective in showing the final product that was being built throughout the entire video.

Outfit #4: Floor

Chenelle: This look was a nod to '80s dancewear. We needed it to be functional more than anything. Keeping it sleek and monochromatic really allowed for her choreography to shine here.

Given the shift of office culture post-pandemic, what does modern workwear for the everyday woman look like to you?

Pre-pandemic, most women dressed for the office. I think working from home has given everyone the opportunity to tap into their creativity and self-expression. Now, women want to dress for themselves, whether that is in a conventional office setting, at home, or wherever they get work done. Opt for unique tops that stand out during virtual meetings paired with low-rise jeans for the balance of casual and chic. When it's time to go into the office, a tailored set is super easy for a more cohesive look that you can pair with different accessories. With the arrival of spring and summer, what are the trends you're putting on your clients this year? Are there any notable style, silhouettes, or runway-inspired moments you're bringing to life within your own wardrobe and the wardrobes of the clients you style?

This spring, I'm loving monochrome looks with a pop of color or texture in accessories. Drop-waist styles are also huge this season and so flattering. Monochrome outfits offer a sleek and sophisticated look, while drop-waist silhouettes bring a playful vibe.

What are some existing outfit dilemmas or problems you've heard about when it comes to workwear? How do you elevate/fix those with correct styling?

One common dilemma that I see is people having a few statement pieces that they have to style their entire wardrobe around. To solve this, focus on versatile pieces that mix and match well, like classic blazers and tailored trousers. Layering and experimenting adds depth. [Embrace] textures and patterns to refresh outfits. Textures and patterns are a great way to add a little life into your workwear staples. Take classic pieces you already have and add a twist to make them feel fresh. I have this chunky Staud sweater in my edit that takes a simple button-down to the next level.

Are there any go-to styling hacks you use on your clients?

One go-to styling hack I often use is pairing a sleek dress with bold accessories or a statement belt for a chic night-out look. For transitioning an outfit from day to night, I love layering a tied cardigan over the shoulders during the day and swapping for bolder accessories at night. Pay attention to details like complementary textures and incorporating gold hardware to elevate the look.

If you could offer one piece of styling advice, what would it be?

Show off what you love about yourself. Identify what you love most about your body and use your clothes to highlight those parts of yourself! Whether it's your legs, waist, or shoulders, find pieces that accentuate your best assets because that will inevitably make you feel confident. Don't be afraid to tailor clothing to fit your body. … When you feel great in what you wear, it shows, and that confidence is the ultimate accessory.

Stylist and wardrobe consultant Allison Bornstein knows a thing or two about shopping. Her straightforward TikTok videos offering styling tips, tricks, and more frequently go viral, and with over 250,000 followers, it's not hard to see why she's become the authority on our most pressing fashion questions. It was her recent video on personal style that struck a chord with me.

In the video, Bornstein compares asking your favorite influencers for the exact items they're wearing to plagiarizing a personal essay. At face value, that might seem like a stretch, but it makes sense. In an age of instant gratification and algorithms, many of us have lost sight of what it means to have our own unique style in favor of the "if it looks great on them, it'll look great on me" approach. As Bornstein explains, that's not always true, nor is it conducive to originality. "It's like trying to use a shortcut to find our personal style," she says. Instead, she suggests we "value the process as much as we love the acquisition." The "process" is shopping, which, as Bornstein reminds us, is fun!

Taking the time to hone your eye, trying different things to see what does and doesn't work, and using the style imagery that inspires you merely as a jumping-off point are all ways that can help us develop our fashion sense. With this in mind, I've compiled five outfits I admire below, but rather than providing links to help you get the exact looks, I'm showing you how I might put my own spin on them. Hopefully, this will get your creative juices flowing. As Bornstein explains, "It's about your experience. It's about your expression."

It's all about the proportions for me with this look. While I don't know that I could pull off a white pinstriped suit, I do know that I'm very fond of the way all the components work together. 

I'm already thinking about warmer weather, and while I don't remember the last time I wore a tube top, this outfit is making me want to! I'd add an open button-down shirt over top for a little more versatility.

A monochrome color palette is one of my favorite tricks for making an outfit feel effortless. While I think the pencil skirt looks great here, I could also see flowy pants in a similar shade. 

Now, this is a look. A variation of a sheer skirt over a pair of briefs is something I'd definitely try the next time I have a big event.

You may already follow her on Instagram for her elevated mix of high-low dressing, but here, she reveals "The Capsule 12"—her answer to building the most hard-working summer wardrobe, and the secret approach that she recommends to all her clients. Clothes are an interesting thing, aren’t they? An outfit can make you feel your absolute best or really and truly dreadful. I’ve spent many years looking at people’s shopping habits (including my own) and I’ve finally come to the conclusion that having a small capsule that you can lean on is the solution to many of our dressing road blocks. This doesn’t mean you have to ditch all of your existing beloved pieces (even the ones you may only bring out once in a blue moon). It's more about focusing your attention on the pieces you really enjoy wearing. Once you've created your capsule around these pieces, it becomes much easier to identify the wardrobe items that you may have clung onto, but no longer serve you—that's when I’d recommend saying goodbye and giving them another home to be re-loved.

Now, let's get down to it. This is where my trick, The Capsule 12, sashays in. Trust me when I say this is a tried and tested perfect equation, catering to all your day-to-night needs for the current season and ahead. It may be a little neutral or not as exciting as some would expect, but hear me out—it’s my no-stress guide to dressing when the last thing you want to do is worry about what you’re wearing, or worse, packing. Everything in this capsule goes together to create at least 30+ looks and counting. It’s your foundation to dressing, and then your personality can be injected through shoes, bags and accessories, as this is where the most impact should come from. If you follow this formula it will make getting ready in the morning far less stressful and a lot more enjoyable.

So, what does The Capsule 12 consist of, I hear you ask? It's 12 simple pieces broken down into five easy categories: two jackets, two dresses (or you can swap out one for a jumpsuit), two pairs of trousers, two skirts (or swap one out for a pair of shorts) and four tops.

Some of the best outfits I’ve dressed my clients in aren’t singular items (apart from event dressing—that’s a very different ball game). Instead, it’s about all the ingredients that go into the outfit to make it a "look". It’s all about balance and adding in fun where necessary. But, most importantly (and this is absolutely essential) it's about allowing you to feel like the best version of yourself. The Capsule 12 is the foundation to your wardrobe, so this edit needs to be many things. Firstly, it has to blend well together, otherwise the equation won’t work. That's why my capsules can often look a little basic in parts, but the magic happens when it all comes together. It also needs to be functional, practical and lastly, take the stress out of feeling like you have nothing to wear. So, let's just make it easier for ourselves by consolidating things into 12 great pieces. Here are some options I'm recommending at the moment to get you started.

TikTok has opened up a fresh space to discuss a range of topics in new ways—among them is fashion. Creators are touching on fashion in a range of ways, but stylist and TikTok "fashion teacher" Allison Bornstein's conversations about style and shopping have especially resonated. Earlier this year, we spoke with Bornstein about her "three-word method" to find your personal style (an approach that boils down to finding three words that describe your current style and the style that you aspire to have) as it went TikTok viral. 

Now, the stylist has a new method that's gaining attention on TikTok that dissects pieces to figure out if they're trendy or timeless. Her "three-question method" involves asking yourself three key questions to decide whether something is a fleeting trend or if it is a piece worth purchasing that has staying power. "I advise clients on a lot of purchases and they often will ask me if something is just a trend or if it is worth purchasing," Bornstein tells Who What Wear. "I like to try to help them make smart shopping decisions and avoid buying things that they will tire of or won't wear, so I usually walk them through these questions."

The Three-Question Method

Ahead, Allison Bornstein dives into her "three-question method," explaining the key things to ask yourself about a specific piece to figure out if the purchase is timeless or trendy. 

Question 1: Would you have worn the piece last year?

"Essentially, this is meant to help us understand if we are just seeing this a lot on Instagram and are being influenced to purchase it or if it is something that you would have wanted before seeing others wear it," Bornstein explains. "I feel like with Instagram, we will see a specific bag or shoe or pieces a ton, and then it sort of gets into our subconscious and we can convince ourselves that we need it, when in fact, we never really wanted it until we were influenced. This also helps us look back and see if this is something that has been around or if it is a trend."

Question 2: Will you want to wear it next year?

"This is a big one. And sometimes I phrase it to clients like this, 'Even if no one else is wearing it anymore, would you still want to wear it?'" say Bornstein. "This helps us take a beat and reflect if we will actually want to commit to wearing this piece or if it's just an impulse." 

Question 3: If the trend returns later, will you wear this exact piece?

"Basically, if you don't wear the item for a while and it comes back in fashion (everything does eventually!) will you want to wear this exact piece? Or will you want to get a more 'updated' version. If you would want to get an updated version, then maybe it's a sign that the silhouette or colour is not timeless," Bornstein shares. "I like to call this 'minting our own vintage' because we are holding onto things that we will want to wear again. It is sustainable and helps create a functional and timeless wardrobe." 

Case Studies

After explaining how the three-question method works, I was interested to see how it would work in practice. Ahead, Bornstein applied her method to some specific fashion items to figure out if purchasing them would feel timeless or trendy. It's worth noting, however, that she points out everyone will arrive at a different conclusion, based on what works for their personal style. The items here are pieces Bornstein thinks would be timeless buys for her wardrobe. For example, a teddy jacket didn't make the cut since it's a piece she doesn't envision in her wardrobe five years from now.

Would I have worn them last year?

For me, I think I would! I like a Western influence and I feel like I could have gotten a pair at a vintage shop which is also a good sign of timelessness. They have been worn and recycled for years!

Would I want to wear them next year?

Yes! 

Will I keep these exact ones?

Yes! I think if you get a pair that is plain and simple you will definitely be inclined to keep them in your closet for when they come back around. In fact, I have a pair of shorter black Luchesse cowboy boots that I have had for at least eight years! I have to break those out.

Yes! And I can pull up a bunch of images of icons throughout the years wearing them.

Yes. I have my Saint Laurent black cat eye sunglasses that I have had for years and although I don't wear them much, I break them out and don’t feel like I need new cat eye glasses because these still feel relevant aka they are timeless!

TikTok has opened up a fresh space to discuss a range of topics in new ways—among them is fashion. Creators are touching on fashion in a range of ways, but stylist and TikTok "fashion teacher" Allison Bornstein's conversations about style and shopping have especially resonated. Earlier this year, we spoke with Bornstein about her "three-word method" to find your personal style (an approach that boils down to finding three words that describe your current style and the style that you aspire to have) as it went TikTok viral. 

Now, the stylist has a new method that's gaining attention on TikTok that dissects pieces to figure out if they're trendy or timeless. Her "three-question method" involves asking yourself three key questions to decide whether something is a fleeting trend or if it is a piece worth purchasing that has staying power. "I advise clients on a lot of purchases and they often will ask me if something is just a trend or if it is worth purchasing," Bornstein tells Who What Wear. "I like to try to help them make smart shopping decisions and avoid buying things that they will tire of or won't wear, so I usually walk them through these questions."

The Three-Question Method

Ahead, Allison Bornstein dives into her "three-question method," explaining the key things to ask yourself about a specific piece to figure out if the purchase is timeless or trendy.

Question 1: Would you have worn the piece last year?

"Essentially, this is meant to help us understand if we are just seeing this a lot on Instagram and are being influenced to purchase it or if it is something that you would have wanted before seeing others wear it," Bornstein explains. "I feel like with Instagram, we will see a specific bag or shoe or pieces a ton, and then it sort of gets into our subconscious and we can convince ourselves that we need it, when in fact, we never really wanted it until we were influenced. This also helps us look back and see if this is something that has been around or if it is a trend."

Question 2: Will you want to wear it next year?

"This is a big one. And sometimes I phrase it to clients like this, 'Even if no one else is wearing it anymore, would you still want to wear it?'" say Bornstein. "This helps us take a beat and reflect if we will actually want to commit to wearing this piece or if it's just an impulse."

Question 3: If the trend returns later, will you wear this exact piece?

"Basically, if you don't wear the item for a while and it comes back in fashion (everything does eventually!) will you want to wear this exact piece? Or will you want to get a more 'updated' version. If you would want to get an updated version, then maybe it's a sign that the silhouette or color is not timeless," Bornstein shares. "I like to call this 'minting our own vintage' because we are holding onto things that we will want to wear again. It is sustainable and helps create a functional and timeless wardrobe."

Case Studies

After explaining how the three-question method works, I was interested to see how it would work in practice. Ahead, Bornstein applied her method to some specific fashion items to figure out if purchasing them would feel timeless or trendy. It's worth noting, however, that she points out everyone will arrive at a different conclusion, based on what works for their personal style. The items here are pieces Bornstein thinks would be timeless buys for her wardrobe. For example, a teddy jacket didn't make the cut since it's a piece she doesn't envision in her wardrobe five years from now.

Would I have worn them last year?

For me, I think I would! I like a Western influence and I feel like I could have gotten a pair at a vintage shop which is also a good sign of timelessness. They have been worn and recycled for years!

Would I want to wear them next year?

Yes! 

Will I keep these exact ones?

Yes! I think if you get a pair that is plain and simple you will definitely be inclined to keep them in your closet for when they come back around. In fact, I have a pair of shorter black Luchesse cowboy boots that I have had for at least eight years! I have to break those out.

Would I have worn them last year?

Yes! And I can pull up a bunch of images of icons throughout the years wearing them 

Would I want to wear them next year?

Yes! I think they will not look out of place if I am wearing cat eye sunglasses even if everyone else has moved on to a different shape!

Will I keep these exact ones?

Yes. I have my Saint Laurent black cat eye sunglasses that I have had for years and although I don't wear them much, I break them out and don’t feel like I need new cat eye glasses because these still feel relevant aka they are timeless! 

Would I have worn them last year?

Yes

Would I want to wear them next year?

Yes, I love leather and love blazers and even if other people aren't wearing them as much, it feels like it goes with my vibe and my three words, so yes, I will wear. 

Will I keep these exact ones?

Maybe it was realizing she styled a starlet in the pages of a glossy zine or watching her reality TV show on Bravo entitled The Rachel Zoe Project. But whatever way you came to her work, there's no denying that her impact is woven into every part of the zeitgeist. With over 29 years in the fashion industry, Zoe can be accredited as the brain behind some of the most viral moments in fashion, from red carpet looks to fashion trends. 

She not only styled some of the biggest starlets of the mid-aughts (think Lindsay Lohan and Nicole Richie) but also made some of those trends like boho-chic popular. Beyond styling, she launched her namesake label and digital publication. If that weren't enough, she more recently co-founded Curateur, a membership-based shopping service. All of this is to say that Zoe has been and continues to be one of the driving forces behind what's stylish. So when we were offered the chance to speak with her, we giddily accepted. 

Ahead, Zoe is talking about what she's learned throughout her career, some of her favorite styling moments, and, of course, which winter trends she feels are worth investing in for the long haul. 

You've cemented yourself as a legend in the fashion industry for your work, but what's one thing you think many people might not know about you?

Although I have built my career as an extrovert who thrives off meeting interesting, dynamic people and constantly being in large social gatherings, one thing that I think people might not know about me is that I am an introvert. When I am not working, I am very much a homebody, and I always prefer to be at home with Rodger and the kids. 

You've been a stylist and designer for 30 years. Over the course of your career, what have you learned? 

One of the biggest lessons I have learned is to always trust my instincts. When I question them, that is when I make the most mistakes. I have found that confidence comes from experience, which is only something you learn as you live your career journey. It really is experience and years of living out your career on so many levels that afford you this ease about how you go about the subsequent phases in your life. When I was younger, I was insecure and feared that I would fail. You must learn to trust your instincts and believe you are in your position because you earned it. The biggest lesson is that working hard wins in the end. There are no shortcuts to success.

You've worked with an incredible client roster over the years and created some of the most iconic red carpet looks. Why do you feel styling as a whole is an integral part of pop culture? 

I think styling, at least from how I approached it, is from a very psychological standpoint where I get to know my client and get to understand the person they are trying to put out there into the world. Red carpet styling, specifically, is such a public forum where people place judgment without you actually speaking. It was always helping to create an image or send a message to people. Many of my clients went through periods in their lives where they wanted to dress differently, only wear black, dye their hair a different color, etc. For me, styling is so important because you are really there as someone's advocate to help them navigate their image in the public eye.

Are there any looks you've styled that stand out as looks that will be cemented into the style zeitgeist? 

There are many that have been honored over the last 15 years or so, but there are a few that stand out the most. Anne Hathaway in Atelier Versace at the Venice Film Festival, Jennifer Garner in the one-shoulder Valentino at the 2004 Vanity Fair Oscar Party, Cameron Diaz in the magenta Dior with turquoise jewelry at the 2007 Met Ball, and Jennifer Lawrence in Dior Couture at the 2012 Oscars… The list goes on!

Since you've dedicated your career to helping others hone in on their style, what advice would you give our readers to craft their own?

My greatest advice would be to own your own personal style. Get inspired by people whose style you love, and try to emulate different parts of that while also doing what works for you and your own body type. There is a lot of trial and error in creating your own personal style, but the winner will always be what you feel the most confident about.

You've spent a lifetime curating wardrobes. Do you have any advice for readers looking to clean out their closets this season potentially? 

First and foremost, my most significant piece of advice is [this]: If you haven't looked at it in years or reached for it, get rid of it. Please get rid of all the trendy bags you don't wear and swap them with more classic ones that will stand time. I recommend investing in timeless pieces—nothing too trendy or something that will lose appeal after a few wears.

Are there any pieces that are essential to any woman's wardrobe? If so, why?

Accessories that reflect your personal style are an absolute must. A great pair of earrings, a bag, or a fabulous pair of sunglasses are lovely ways to add some flair to your wardrobe.

Since jewelry is one of your must-have staples, are there any brands you love?

As a seasoned stylist, you've seen it all regarding trends. How has your relationship with what's "stylish" at the moment evolved over the years?

Trends will come and go, but I've learned to invest in great pieces you love. Whether that's a bag or a piece of jewelry, these are timeless pieces you'll be able to wear with any trend. There's nothing like pairing a particular style of dress or top with a classic hoop earring.

You're cited as being the stylist making "boho chic" a thing in the mid-aughts. As we see a resurgence of trends from that era, are there any specific trends you hope will make a comeback? 

I would say that the good news is I haven't changed my style all that much! The oversize coats, big bags, wide-leg pants, bell bottoms, caftans, and chunky, oversize sweaters are all coming back.

We're officially in full swing of fall, with winter on the horizon—are there trends you feel are worth investing in right now that lend themselves to looking stylish years from now?

1. Faux-Fur Coats

I think a few fall trends are highly worth investing in. The first is an oversize faux-fur coat. Faux fur is something I always wear year-round, but I find myself reaching for them the most throughout the winter months. I think having a few solid faux-fur coats in your closet is a trend that will continue to be stylish over time.

Are there any fashion brands you love and feel will become big in 2023?

I am obsessed with Khaite. [Catherin Holstein] just won the CFDA for American Womenswear Designer of the Year, and I see big things happening for her in 2023. I am also forever obsessed with Oscar de la Renta under the creative direction of Fernando Garcia and Laura Kim and Carolina Herrera with Wes Gordon as creative director. They continue to be legendary, and I love what they are doing—taking a very iconic brand and putting a modern take on the design—which I love and know will be an even bigger success in the future.

What does style mean to you? And what role do you think style plays in shaping us collectively and as individuals? 

Style is not fashion. Style is so much larger than fashion. It is your whole being, how you carry yourself, conduct yourself with people, and move in a room. The way you dress yourself is only one small part of style. Style is who you are at the core—not in a superficial way but in how you treat people and approach life.

What do you hope your legacy will be? What do you want the fashion industry to take away from your work? 

If I could leave behind the notion of living a glamorous life, whatever that means to you, then I think that is a win for me. Trying to help women live their absolute best lives—whether that is how to entertain or how you walk out the door, approaching your life in the best manner, and helping them live their best lives in the most glamorous way—is what I want people to take from my work.

My personal style is ever evolving and has spanned the fashion spectrum to include everything from bold pops of color to pared-back neutral looks. That being said, my core sense of fashion has had some common threads running through it that I can trace all the way back to high school and the outfits I wore as a teen. This became even clearer to me after I learned about stylist Allison Bornstein's "three-word method" to personal style—a hack that is blowing up on TikTok. Essentially, it boils down to finding three words that describe your current style and the style that you aspire to have. She even has a handy list of adjectives you can reference, ranging from "edgy and sculptural" to "romantic and playful" if you're trying to pinpoint what makes sense for you.

Reflecting on my overall sense of style, what I'm currently wearing, and what I want to dress like moving forward, I narrowed in on "classic," "'90s," and "polished" as my three words. Immediately, it made a closet clean-out easier and helped me make decisions about purchases I was on the fence about. Applying each word, I was able to identify what felt true to my personal style and which pieces felt like trend-driven purchases that were outliers. Curious to learn more about the method and dive in deeper, I spoke to Bornstein—a stylist and fashion teacher who makes getting dressed feel approachable, deliberate, and, best of all, fun.

The Three-Word Method

Tell me about your three-word method to personal style.

The three-word method was born out of my work with personal styling clients and is designed to help you define and refine the details of your personal style. I have discovered that identifying a three-word recipe can really help clients unlock so many ideas and serve as a great reference point for getting dressed, editing, shopping, and evolving their style in general! The combination of the three is really important because it allows for tension and helps clients pinpoint their unique aesthetic.

I have had clients who felt like their wardrobes were very disjointed because they had many different things all living together in the closet but being worn separately. I would tell these clients that these differing aesthetics are actually what makes up your personal style, and they should be embraced and worn together.

For example, I had a client who was between L.A. and New York and felt like she was super boho and romantic in L.A. and a little more tailored and oversize in New York. It made it hard to shop and hard to reconcile her identity apart from the cities she lived in. Together, we married these aesthetics and created something unique to her, so instead of separating the words, we brought them together to create something genuine to all of her desires!

Applying It to Your Personal Style

What is the best way to figure out which three words apply to someone's style?

To discover your three words, the first place to look is in your own closet. We all have personal style whether we know it or not! So the first thing I usually suggest you do to find your three words is to pull out all of your "regulars," or what you wear all the time. How would you describe these pieces? Are they all casual or sporty or sexy or flowy or printed? This is what I mean by your style exists in your wardrobe. We are literally pulling out what you wear to determine this. Don't get bummed if what you pulled out doesn't inspire you immediately. It is just helping us determine where we are at. I usually like to use two words to describe what I am seeing in a client's closet and then save the third word for a more aspirational word!

The third word is like your North Star. It is the near-future you! This word can also change and evolve. Actually, all of your words can and should change and evolve. Mine usually shifts between "tailored" and "elegant."

If you are having a hard time identifying your words or need a little inspiration, it can be really helpful to look at Pinterest or your saved images. It can be looks you like on other people or looks you like on yourself, and take a second to look at that. What do these looks have in common? Is it similar to what you see in your wardrobe? Maybe you notice its a lot of pins of Hailey Bieber in big blazers, but your "regulars" are not as tailored or oversize as that. Maybe you want to choose "tailored" or "oversize” as one of your words to help guide you where you want to go.

How to Put Your Three Words Into Action

Once you figure out your three words, how should you utilize them for shopping, getting dressed, and editing your wardrobe?

One of the most helpful ways to use the three-word method is as an editing tool. It gives you a really helpful framework and gives you permission to let go of something that isn't serving you or allowing you to express your style.

It also forces you to look at what you might want to add to your wardrobe in a whole new way that allows you to go much deeper. It also helps when you are shopping. Once you are acquainted with your style and understand who you are and what you like, you will be able to be more streamlined and make better decisions. You will have a stronger sense of what you like and what you need once you can identify your style. Investing in the process of uncovering your fashion identity will actually save you so much money in the long run and help you be a smarter consumer.

I often advise clients to call upon their three words when they are feeling stuck or when their look isn't quite working. You can use the words as a mental checklist and make sure that you have the elements represented in the look. It can be as simple as changing up your hair or rolling up a shirt sleeve, but these small tweaks can make a huge difference!

You’ve definitely seen looks crafted from the mastermind of stylist Mimi Cuttrell, who works with mega-celebs including Gigi Hadid, Ariana Grande, and Maude Apatow. A master of proportion play and stealth accessories, her looks always inspire what fashion on the street style scene looks like in the coming months. If you’ve ever wanted to adopt some of the looks she is dressing celebs in, I have some great news for you: Cuttrell recently launched a shoe and bag collaboration with BY FAR that has some of the coolest pieces for spring sitting in it.

Speaking to Cuttrell about the partnership, she explained that she was influenced by retro styles: "My collection with BY FAR was inspired by my love for vintage staples. I wanted to incorporate elements of the styles I grew up around into this collaboration and make them accessible to everyone.”
