Summer is almost here, and I, like so many other people, have already scheduled my back-to-blonde salon appointment. There's nothing like expertly placed bleach and freshly styled strands to celebrate the start of a new season, especially when that season is a long, sun-soaked summer.

I usually stick to the same old hair color, simply asking my hairstylist to refresh my grown-out roots and blend away any harsh lines with a toner-gloss combo. Not this year, though. Blame it on all of the blonde-hair inspo I collect on Instagram, TikTok, and Pinterest, but lately, I've been craving something different—something bright, stylish, and sun-kissed. So I did what any good beauty editor would do. I turned to an expert and asked celebrity hairstylist Bradley Leake to share the top three blonde color trends for summer 2026. Halo Highlights

Leake says halo highlights will be a major trend for summer 2026. In fact, he says he's seeing them "everywhere" right now. As the name suggests, this trend involves "strategic brightness focused around the hairline, crown, and top layers to create a natural 'halo' of light around the face." While it's not a new technique by any means, people on Instagram and TikTok are popularizing it because it makes the face a strong, visual focal point and creates a "lit from within" effect on the hair.

"It gives blondes a brighter, more dimensional look without needing a full heavy highlight," he says. "Clients love it because it grows out softer, feels lower-maintenance, and still gives that expensive bright blonde effect without the upkeep." To reiterate, that means two things. First, the hair remains healthier by not being overprocessed—remember, it's all about strategic highlighting, not allover bleach. Second, you can stretch out your color appointments because you're not saturating every section of hair; you're "concentrating brightness where light naturally hits."

I'm about as low-maintenance as it gets when it comes to my hair, so this is a tempting trend to embrace. And since it's versatile, you can make it as bold or as subtle as you like. I tend to veer toward the latter for a natural, sun-kissed look.

Expensive Honey Blonde

I've always been a fan of honey blonde, especially Sofia Richie Grainge's and Bella Hadid's takes, so it feels like Leake is speaking directly to my soul when he says this is going to be the blonde of summer. "Think expensive, glossy, rich honey tones with dimension—not flat yellow-blonde. It’s softer around the face, brighter through the ends, and has that 'you just got back from Europe' feel."

Leake says this trend is a response to the cool-toned colors that were so popular over the last few years. "I think people are moving away from overly icy blondes with so much contrast and wanting hair that feels healthier, shinier, and more natural in sunlight."

Here's the thing, though. The perfect honey blonde is deceptively difficult to pin down. Leake says most people make the mistake of asking their hairstylist for "warm blonde." That, he says, can go wrong very fast. "Instead, ask for a neutral golden blonde with soft honey dimension and bring reference photos in natural lighting. The key to a really beautiful honey blonde is balance—you want warmth but still brightness and softness."

Leake says placement matters just as much as tone. "A softer root, pops of brightness around the face, and ribbons of dimension throughout keep it looking elevated instead of brassy," he says. "Glossing is huge too. The right gloss is what gives honey blonde that expensive reflective finish and proper tone."

Scandinavian Soft Blonde

ICYMI, the so-called Scandi hairline was a massive trend circa 2022 and 2023. It involved bleaching the baby hairs at the front of the scalp to brighten the hairline. Well, Leake says the Scandi aesthetic is back and even bigger for summer 2026. This time, though, it's not just about the hairline; it's about luxurious allover color.

"This trend is very soft, creamy, almost filtered-looking blonde. Super-blended roots, airy brightness, and a healthier finish instead of overly processed platinum. The big shift happening right now is that people still want brightness, but they want movement, softness, and shine. Hair health is becoming part of the aesthetic—which I personally love. Going blonde is an investment, and the proper haircare to maintain your blonde locks at home is key."

I don't know about you, but anytime I'm planning a vacation, I'm always thinking about what I want to do with my hair. Sometimes I'm not sure if I should arrive with my hair looking its best and touch it up from there or if I should go more laid back and give it a proper refresh once I reach my destination. Temperature control: According to Wright, a quality travel straightener should heat evenly and offer enough range to work across different hair textures. In case anyone makes you think that fashion and beauty trends are insignificant, or even worse, vain, let me be the one to remind you that that's unequivocally untrue. They inform and are informed by the economy, culture, and changing societal norms. They also define generations and determine our place in time. I could write a thesis on this topic, but I'll cut to the chase and say this: Often, if you take the time to analyze and investigate overarching aesthetic trends, you'll discover a common thread that clues you in to the collective consciousness.

That couldn't be more true for summer's biggest hair trends. Celebrity hairstylists and colorists agree that there's an emphasis on all things natural, relaxed, and lived-in right now, and this holds regardless of hair type, color, or length. (I think it's influenced by wellness culture and how people are zeroed in on their health—hair health included, but that's up for debate.) Take it from Isabella Mastrippolito, colorist at Benjamin Salon in West Hollywood. "Across the board, there's a continued push toward lived-in, dimensional color—soft, subtle ribbons of lighter pieces woven through the hair so everything blends easily and grows out without harsh lines. It mimics natural lighting from a long summer outdoors and keeps the overall look soft, easy, and low maintenance.”

There's also an emphasis on "micro-identity," as people reference specific eras and aesthetics from years past, turning them into new, signature looks. "About six in 10 American teens use TikTok daily, and we're pulling from late '90s and Y2K aesthetics, indie sleaze and 2014 Tumblr, '70s texture and shaggy hair, '90s supermodel glam, early clean-girl minimalism, and punk and alternative influences," says Liz Lorenzo Shears, another stylist at Benjamin Salon in West Hollywood. These influences may be nostalgic, but they feel extremely relevant for summer 2026, especially when they exude a relaxed, effortless aura.

Golden-Hour Blonde

Blonde is always particularly popular in the summer, but right now, "golden-hour blonde" is stealing the show. "For blonde, everything is going softer and more beach-washed," Mastrippolito says. "It’s warm beige and light golden tones that look naturally lifted after time in the ocean and sun. It feels effortless and expensive, with a focus on seamless grow-out and color that doesn't look overly maintained."

Meri Kate O'Connor, a Benjamin Salon Celebrity Colorist, agrees, saying balayage is the best technique to use. "For this look, golden ribbons are painted throughout the hair to create warm, sun-kissed dimension. Balayage naturally mimics the way the sun lightens hair (keeping it brighter around the face and on the ends), resulting in a multidimensional highlight that's warm and glowing while still maintaining depth and contrast. The technique also means a softer, more natural grow-out. Think Tate McRae and Gigi Hadid."

Butter Blonde

Butter blonde is just as trendy right now. "This golden blonde is mixed with lighter, brighter, near-white tones that are super shiny and soft," O'Connor says. "Gold reflects light, which gives the hair that luminous, polished finish. It's warm, effortless, and endlessly flattering. Think Margot Robbie and Sydney Sweeney."

Renée Valerie Radoiu, vice president, R+Color Education and R+Color Collective member, agrees. "Butter blonde is the golden refresh blondes crave between seasons. Warmer, brighter, and softly luminous, it can complement cooler skin tones while bringing a healthier glow back to hair that may feel a little faded after summer. Chase Kusero, cofounder of IGK Hair Care, says the emphasis on buttery tones points to a bigger trend. "Bright icy blondes are giving way to warmer, softer blondes that look naturally sunlit. Think creamy champagne, golden undertones, and expensive-looking dimension. Clients are gravitating toward color that grows out beautifully with less maintenance. Teddy Bear Bronde

"Blonde highlights are seamlessly blended into the hair and toned to a honey-beige that complements the natural base while adding warmth and shine. Glossy Brunette

This season, the trendiest brunette hair color is any shade, as long as it's rich, glossy, and luminous. Yep, we're back to talking about hair health, folks. "Brunettes are leaning rich and glossy," Mastrippolito says. "The overall effect is healthy, reflective hair that catches sunlight in a really natural way, enhancing the depth of the base color rather than changing it dramatically.”

Don't be afraid to go rich and warm, rather than cool. Kusero says to ask for "caramel ribbons and soft dimension." It's not about dramatic contrast; rather, it's about a subtle and reflective finish. "This is the kind of color that catches light really beautifully. Keeping this color glossy is essential; IGK Paid In Full High-Gloss Intense Repair Treatment ($38) enhances shine and deeply nourishes hair."

Radoiu agrees. "Rich, glossy, absolutely not flat brunette is the mood right now. Think warmth, dimension, and chocolate tones that elevate the hair in a way that feels polished, luxe, and expensive."

Haircut Trends

The Bixie

Celebs love the bixie. In fact, it might be one of the biggest hair trends of the entire year, much less the summer. Zendaya, Jessie Buckley, and Gracie Abrams are all proponents of the ultra-chic haircut. "This cut is a hybrid between a bob and a pixie," says Leo Izquierdo, cofounder of IGK Hair Care. "It’s shorter and playful but softer than a traditional pixie, with longer pieces around the face and textured layers throughout."

Bonus points if you style it in a relaxed way that highlights your natural texture. It exudes effortlessness and will help preserve the health of your hair (no heat styling necessary). Plus, it gives off a chic South of France vibe.

The Soft Shag

Adam Federico is R+Co's vice president of technical education. He says the soft shag, or the "Sachel," is another low-effort, high-impact option for summer 2026. "The shag continues to evolve, and this summer it’s becoming more wearable. I’m seeing a lot of interest in what people call the 'Sachel,' which sits somewhere between a shag and the Rachel-inspired layered cut. It has face-framing pieces, soft texture, and movement through the lengths, but it’s not overly choppy or hard to grow out."

"I think it’s trending because it gives the hair a bit more personality. It makes natural texture feel intentional, and it has that undone, lived-in energy people love in summer. Curly Face-Framing Lob

Cataanda James is a trichologist and Dippity-Do curly hair expert. She says the curly 'fro and the curly face-framing lob are major hair trends for summer '26—the best one for you all depends on your curl pattern. "[It's] all about naturalism," she says. "Curl patterns 3B to 4C, sans heavy product application and forced definition, effortlessly form into an Afro because that is the personality of higher curl patterns. Curls defy gravity organically, and the true essence of the curly 'fro is its natural, upward flow forming a round, voluminous halo with authentic shape memory."

"On 2A to 3A curl patterns, it's all about strategic cutting, geographical angles, and style technique. Since looser curl patterns experience more of a downward pull and less lift, creating this look entails a global, 90-degree angled cut. Starting at the crown, the hair is held out from the scalp at 90 degrees and blunt cut at each point, ensuring not to lose your guide. You're essentially cutting the hair to form a complete circle, which is clearly visible when flipping the head upside down. This is where styling and technique come into play."

James says both haircuts are trending because they're the most effortless style for curly hair types. Effortless is IN. "This is the personality of curls and rather than being in a constant curl battle, the curlies are embracing it and flaunting their authenticity from head to toe. Ironically, in most cases, depending on the length, the curly 'fro is to the 3B to 4C curlies what the curly, face-framing lob is to the 2A to 3A girlies."

Hair Accessory Trends

Head Scarves

All nine celeb hairstylists and colorists say headscarves are the number one hair accessory trend for summer 2026. Yep, every single one. "Scarves are the editorial hair accessory of the moment," Lorenzo Shears says. "Designers are pushing them hard on runways right now. Silk scarves tied over hair, woven into braids, wrapped around buns, or worn Jackie O.– and Grace Kelly–style, tied under the chin. It's effortlessly chic."

Edgar Parra, senior stylist at Benjamin Salon in New York and West Hollywood, says silk scarves are particularly trendy. "Silk scarves are having a moment, but they’re being worn in a much more relaxed way, loosely tied into ponytails or wrapped into undone buns so they feel soft and unforced rather than styled," he says.

Silk scarves aren't just chic; they're practical. That's according to James, who says, "The biggest curly hair accessory of summer 2026 is the standard, square-size silk or satin scarf. It's protective to your curls, has no friction, and doubles as a headband, headwrap, hair tie, ponytail holder, scrunchie, and all the things! It's versatile, comes in a variety of colors and prints, and is easy to tote. Scarves are the ultimate accessory to your curls, and when styled properly, they can help you camouflage curls that have started to frizz or fray, or curls that have surpassed washday far too long. Designer labels or not, the scarf is the main character to adorn your curls all summer 2026!"

Claw Clips

What's more relaxed and effortless than a claw clip? This summer, they're bigger than ever. "Claw clips continue to be a go-to, but they’re leaning more understated—matte finishes, neutral tones, and simple shapes that work for quick styling," Mastrippolito says.

Izquierdo agrees, noting that the size of your claw clip matters now more than ever. "The effortless updo continues to dominate," he says. "Oversize clips create that 'undone but chic' look that people want during hot weather."

Soft Headbands

Last but not least, the experts say soft, beachy headbands will be a top trend this season. Frederico says they're practical but romantic. "I think consumers are drawn to them because they give you that vacation feeling, even if you’re just running errands."

Parra agrees. "Headbands are also having a moment, and for summer 2026 expect to see a beachier, more relaxed variation of the trend. Beyond the style factor, they're practical—a great way to keep hair off your face and cool down during the warmer months." Easy and relaxed—as is the official theme of summer 2026.

In the world of skincare, glycolic acid is one of the stars. The exfoliating acid is renowned for its ability to fade discoloration, smooth texture, clear clogged pores, and boost collagen production. Lately, though, it's been popping up as a featured ingredient in popular hair products.

Admittedly, this gave me pause. How could this exfoliating acid possibly benefit my hair? After seeing the latest glycolic acid–spiked haircare product come across my Instagram feed, I decided it was high time to take this question to an expert—Rick Wellman, master celebrity colorist and hairstylist at The Salon Project in NYC, to be exact.

I don't want to spoil it for you, but after asking him my burning questions, I'm convinced everyone needs to incorporate glycolic acid into their hair routine. It's proof that the "skinification" of the scalp and hair is still going strong, and there are real benefits to bringing facial-grade ingredients and techniques into one's haircare routine. What is glycolic acid?

We've already established that glycolic acid is an exfoliating acid, but it's important to know that there are two categories of exfoliating acids—alpha hydroxy acids (AHAs) and beta hydroxy acids (BHAs). "Glycolic acid is an AHA made from sugarcane," dermatologist Ife Rodney, MD, FAAD, of Eternal Dermatology and Aesthetics, previously told Who What Wear. "It is a popular active ingredient in skincare for its exfoliation properties."

How does it benefit the hair?

"We are seeing some unusual TikTok ways glycolic acid is being used for scalp and hair treatments lately," Wellman says. "Our salon clients are asking, 'Is this for real, and does it really work?' My short answer: It's both legit and trending." Wellman says glycolic acid loosens dead skin and improves moisture and elasticity, which is why it's an excellent ingredient to use in scalp-exfoliating and buildup-banishing products. Whether it's included in a purely chemical exfoliant or used in combination with a physical exfoliant (e.g., added to a salt scrub), it can remove product buildup and return balance to the scalp and strands.

Outside of exfoliation, it boosts moisture in the scalp and hair and can even boost shine by strengthening the hair strands and smoothing the hair cuticle for a glossy, light-reflective finish. "[Glycolic acid] can remove excess oily scalp or flaking issues while also giving hair that balanced moisture-and-strength combo we all love," Wellman says. "Consider it, when used properly, like a 'scalp facial,' especially when paired and applied with a certified 'head spa’ setup." Per client popularity, Wellman recently upgraded his entire shampoo room with reclining flatbed chairs and waterfall rinsing sinks for a spa-like experience. How to Use Glycolic Acid for Scalp and Hair

Since there are now so many glycolic acid–spiked scalp and haircare products, it's easy to follow the best-use directions on the label. However, Wellman has a couple of important things to note. First, avoid using a glycolic acid exfoliating treatment on the scalp or hair more than once a month—twice at most. "Here's my reality check, speaking from experience: Dumping face-grade glycolic toners straight up weekly is not a good move. When misused and abused, it can actually weaken hair over time and create scalp-barrier damage. Glycolic acid is not a hair-growth treatment," he says.

Second, avoid using high-strength glycolic acid treatments on sensitive scalps or directly after a hair color treatment. "I've seen it strip some color molecules," he says. That said, if it's used safely and correctly, glycolic acid can *truly* benefit the scalp and hair. "As you can see, there are ways to use glycolic acid properly for amazing benefits. So my advice? Lajqi also shares that extreme novelty cuts and coolers will also be replacing the overly polished styles of spring 2025—think timeless styles with a twist that modernise '90s and 2000's trends. Paulina Raciborski, stylist at NYC The Team, founded by Michelle Hong, agrees and highlights a movement towards enhancing natural textures for this year, as well as the helpful products to make the styling process easier. A heavy, one length cut can sometimes drag the face down visually," shares professional hairstylist Carla Zuniga, senior stylist at Benjamin Salon. "Layers that start around the cheekbone and move downward help open the face up and highlight your features." Stenson agrees, adding that soft, face-framing layers can enhance movement while maintaining the natural balance of an oval face shape. "It’s a very versatile length that works well whether someone prefers sleek styling or soft waves," he shares.

"Even blunt bangs can look amazing thanks to that natural symmetry," Stenson adds. We wanted to know which ones are fresh, trendy, and of-the-moment, so we reached out to six (count 'em!) in-the-know celebrity stylists. Ahead, see the top fall 2025 hair trends. The Top Fall Haircuts of 2025

1. '90s-Inspired Long Layers

The first fall haircut you need to know about? Almost every single celeb stylist agrees that it's long, luxurious layers. Take it from Jennifer Korab, a celebrity hairstylist, colorist, and the founder of Renaissance Salon and Spa, who says, "Long layers are one of those haircuts that are always trending and highly requested. After summer, a lot of people want to refresh their hair from any damage but want to keep their length, so this haircut is perfect for the fall. It’s not drastic, but it does enough for a new look because you can keep the length but cut pieces in the front to shape the face, and layers create a voluminous and fuller look."

Celebrity hairstylist Jerome Lordet, owner of Jerome Lordet Salon in NYC, agrees. "For those who love length, fall will bring a return of luxurious, healthy-looking layers. It’s all about keeping length but adding fluidity. Ask your stylist for cascading layers starting below the chin for dimension and bounce."

Sean Michael, owner of Salon Beau, says fans of the '90s supermodel blowout should opt for a slight variation, aka '90s-inspired layers (something Sabrina Carpenter has made her signature). These differ from traditional long layers in that they stack around the crown of the head for more bounce and volume. "Think full, bouncy layers that bring movement and body back into the hair," he says. "It’s flattering on almost every length and works beautifully with a blowout."

Celebrity hairstylist Vanessa Ocando agrees that layers are *it* for fall 2025. She recommends incorporating them into a mid-length haircut for a "graceful" summer-to-fall transition. "This cut channels mid-'90s cool with intentional layers that start near the lip line and taper with purpose," she says. "The layers are soft enough to flip, structured enough to style, and versatile enough to part any way you like, middle, deep side, or wherever it naturally falls.

2. The Back-to-Basics Bob and Lob

Devin Graciano is a professional hairstylist and the CEO of Goldie Locks. She says after a year of hyper-specific bobs—the Italian bob, the French bob, the draped bob, etc.—we'll go back to basics. "The classic bob remains the queen of chic and for good reason. Its incredible versatility is keeping this style on full display this season." Lordet agrees, saying, "It’s chic, versatile, and works beautifully with both straight and wavy textures."

Then, there's the classic lob, or long bob. "A long bob is one of those you see a lot during the fall, especially for people who love to do a big chop after the summer but don’t want super-short hair," Korab says. "For a lob, ask your stylist to cut to your shoulder. You can ask for a blunt cut, which is straight across, or even add in some layers for more movement. Some people also request shorter pieces to frame the face."

Pro tip: Graciano says there's a way to decide whether you should get a bob or a lob. "Hold a pen vertically at your earlobe and another horizontally under the chin to form an L-shaped corner. Mark the point where the two intersect and measure from the earlobe to that mark. Read the result. Two inches or less: short hair is flattering. More than two inches: Medium to long hair will be most balanced."

3. Evolutions of the Shag

Dusty "CurlVision" Schlabach is a curly hair specialist. He says the classic shag look is still as relevant as ever. "Rock and roll is on the rise, and a good shag will put you right in the scene. It goes by the 'wolf cut' these days, too. But really, it's just loads of very high layers, cascading all the way down to the ends. The fringe is critical but must be done right. Don’t look for precision or convenience. You’ll want them loose and in your lash line if you’re going for the hottest version of it."

As for Lordet, he says there's no doubt that "layers are making a strong return," and that includes shag cuts. He says the best shag cuts give "a nod to the '70s" but have a "fresher, softer finish. This cut gives volume and effortless texture, perfect for fall when hair naturally feels drier and needs movement."

Graciano's favorite evolution of the shag is the "butterfly cut," which is slightly different from the wolf cut in that the layers are longer and less blunt. "The butterfly cut is a beautiful evolution of the classic shag," she says. "The butterfly cut is perfect for those who want the airy volume of a shorter cut without sacrificing length. With shorter, face-framing layers on top and longer layers through the back, it creates incredible texture and a stunning profile."

4. Classic Curtain Bangs

Curtain bangs are an elegant, French-girl classic, and Michael says they're not going away anytime soon (at least not before fall 2025). He predicts people will opt for curtain bangs in the coming months, as they give off an effortlessly chic vibe. "Curtain fringe bangs are face-framing bangs parted down the middle and swept to each side, cut shorter in the center and longer toward the temples for a soft, blended look," he says. "Tell your stylist you want bangs that sweep back and blend seamlessly into your layers."

The Top Fall Hair Colors of 2025

1. Decadent Mocha

Calling all brunettes! This season, consider accentuating your color via a "decadent mocha" dye job. Graciano says this color is all about depth and dimension, and you can opt for cool or warm undertones depending on which suits your skin tone best. "A rich mocha shade is stunning and deep, velvety brown with subtle cool or warm undertones that catch the light beautifully," she says. "It feels luxurious and healthy."

Lordet seconds that, saying, "Deep, shiny brunette tones with multidimensional lowlights will dominate. It’s rich, timeless, and complements fall wardrobes beautifully."

2. Cherry Cola

Last year was all about fiery red colors, like "cowboy copper." This year, things are getting deeper and richer with an emphasis on "cherry cola" hair. "Cherry cola has always been popular for the fall, but this year it is very trendy, as you have probably seen on TikTok," Korab says. "The depth of the red can vary depending on a person's preference, but it is usually a red wine color. Some also may do a dark brown with a cherry cola glaze over it, so it is more subtle and usually pops in natural light."

It's essentially a deep, punchy take on traditional auburn. And as Graciano says, "nothing harmonizes with the season quite like a vibrant auburn. It’s a classic fall look that feels both timeless and completely of the moment."

3. Champagne Blonde

Graciano says "champagne blonde" is the quiet-luxury color of the season. "Champagne blonde is the perfect transition for blondes coming off of a bright, sun-bleached summer," she says. "We’re gently depositing warmer, golden tonality back into the hair. It’s all about adding a luminous reflective shine." Think of the golden bubbles that swirl up through a champagne flute; it's all about replicating that luxurious golden hue.

4. Caramel Blonde

"Caramel blonde" is darker yet just as warm as champagne blonde. Sitting somewhere between blonde and brown, it's a color that's easy to maintain and personalize. "In the fall, many blondes like to tone down the lightness, so caramel blonde is that perfect in-between," Korab says. "It’s a very warm blonde and can be easily brightened again in the spring or summer."

Lordet loves this color trend, since "warm, golden tones brighten the face without feeling too summery." Jennifer Lopez is proof of that. Her signature caramel blonde hair is always on point.

5. Au Naturel

Last but not least, Schlabach predicts people will return to their natural hue, especially people who have curly hair. It's certainly the most cost-effective color (or anti-color) trend of the season. "With health being the goal and the ultimate flex, we’ll be seeing lots of curlies ditching the highlights and bright colors that are typically damaging and require some serious processing. Instead, they’ll be toning it down, being more subtle, more natural, warmer, focusing on their visible health."

The Top Fall Hair Accessories of 2025

1. The Return of the Headband

If you're like me, you associate headbands with Blair Waldorf and the mid-2000s. However, Korab says they're right on trend for fall 2025, as they give the wearer a put-together, polished look. "Headbands have really made a comeback! A lot of people want their hair out of their face but don’t want to put it up, so a headband is the perfect solution, and it really just adds to your look because they can be plain or more fun, like something sparkly."

Graciano seconds this, saying headbands will be the most popular hair accessory of the fall season. "It’s a simple way to add a touch of glamour and keep your hair perfectly in place, effortlessly elevating your entire look."

Ocando agrees. Although, she puts an emphasis on thin headbands. "This season favors thin, flexible headbands that blend into the hair while adding polish. Styles that I love are minimalist metal, velvet, or tortoiseshell finishes. This is a great way to elevate second-day hair and complement fall’s tailored silhouettes."

Lordet prefers headbands in rich, sumptuous fabrics like velvet. "Luxurious textures like velvet feel especially right for the fall season," he says. "They add instant polish to any hairstyle, whether sleek or undone."

2. Artistic Resin Clips

Graciano also predicts we'll see an emphasis on resin-style barrettes and claw clips. "They are like functional art pieces for your hair and perfect for securing an elegant twist or sweeping hair back from the face," she says.

3. The Banana Clip

Schablach says banana clips will be big this fall. "It’s the best thing for a half-up, half-down look for curly girls, as it keeps the top and bottom meshed together, giving the appearance of a lot of volume and length, unlike the typical hair ties that visibly isolate the top from the bottom, making it too stark a separation."

More specifically, Schablach recommends the PuffCuff. "This is basically a circular banana clip, and it's perfect for the curly girls who have a lot of hair and want the pony or the disco buns without the stretch and tension that comes from elastic hair ties," he says.

In my humble opinion, fall is the best time to switch up your hair look. The season as a whole is buzzing with new beginnings, so why not embrace that palpable back-to-school energy with a brand-new 'do? That doesn't mean you must commit to an edgy pixie or chic French bob (but if you do take the leap, more power to you!); a simple balayage or set of babylights can give you that "wow" effect without too much maintenance. As for the chicest hues to ask for? I consulted top stylists on the biggest fall 2025 hair color trends—and discovered some rather surprising takes.

"Instead of embracing the traditional 'pumpkin spice' color trend this year, hair color across the board will be darker, and we’re going to see more rich and golden neutral tones," Cassie Cohen, celebrity colorist at Chris McMillan Salon, tells me. Rooted Blonde

Rooted blonde, lived-in blonde, "recession" blonde—whatever you call it, know that this low-maintenance hair color is very much here to stay. "[It's] essentially embracing the grow-out while choosing a hair color to apply at the root for a more seamless-looking growth," celebrity hairstylist and Schwarzkopf global color expert Jonathan Colombini shares. By applying a different, lived-in color to your roots, your colorist can essentially nip those harsh grow-out lines in the bud.

"Colorist tip: Be sure to only apply color from root to the exact grow-out line of demarcation so as not to cover your blonde entirely," he advises. "Just before the last five minutes of your processing time, using a fine-toothed comb, flick or drag the hair color no more than a quarter of an inch past grow-out. This technique will reinforce the perfect 'melt,' avoiding any harsh roots."

Bordeaux

Move over, copper—bordeaux is hot on your heels. Rich and warm, this deep red hue with brown undertones is a bold yet classy choice for fall, says Colombini. "Deep red conveys confidence, passion, and individuality. In months that feel muted, it provides an energizing, mood-lifting choice," he adds. "The depth of wine, burgundy, and crimson mirror fall/winter tones in fashion and nature, creating harmony with darker wardrobes and seasonal palettes." Essentially, bordeaux is poised to become a major fall color trend across categories—fashion, nails, and hair looks included.

Golden Ribbons

No matter your base hair color, Cohen says a smattering of golden highlights will suit you well. "Blondes will feature more dimension through the use of deeper lowlights, richer golden highlights, and a greater incorporation of the hair’s natural root color for added depth and contrast," she explains. For brunettes, on the other hand, some golden-brown highlights around the face and on the ends of hair will look positively radiant. "Reds will take on more red/brown tones with a dark golden undertone," she adds. "All of these colors make for 'expensive-looking' hair."

Dark-to-Light Balance

Darker hair colors skyrocket in popularity come fall, "but rather than a dramatic 'all-or-nothing' shift, blondes, brunettes, and redheads will embrace a balanced blend of light and dark," Cohen explains. Think subtle, dark-to-light transitions—aka modern ombré hair—that, according to Cohen, always look expensive. "With this combination, all three hair colors will continue to glisten in the sunlight," she adds. Bonus points if you use a shine-inducing hair gloss every few washes.

Add a hint of spice to your hair color with a few cider lights, or a warm, shiny balayage featuring multiple tones. "Think of cozy tones of warm cinnamon, golden-amber, and spicy bronze," shares colorist Diana Mildice of Chicago's Maxine Salon. "It doesn’t overpower the face; it anchors it. Ethereal Blonde

Bella Hadid certainly broke the internet this summer when she swapped her signature espresso hair color for a warm, honey blonde, and recently, she debuted another stunning—albeit far subtler—transformation: a soft, ethereal blonde perfect for fall. “There’s always a different vibe in different cities,” Appleton tells Who What Wear. “New York feels cool-girl, Paris is always a bit more romantic, L.A. is more ‘hot girl.’ [They’re] different worlds… each tells a story. That’s what you’re doing with hairstyling, you’re storytelling.”

NYC Cool Girl

Appleton believes that your hair should be an accessory, a conduit for self-expression, and something that should be changed up often, depending on your style evolution. No city has a population more willing to take fashion risks than NYC, which is why Appleton dubs the city that never sleeps the epicenter of “cool girl” hair.

We’ve seen no shortage of bobs taking over the city, with ultra-short, ear-skimming microbobs and jaw-length chops earning their places as Manhattanite rites of passage. That said, Appleton is entirely over it. “I think we should retire the cunty bob. I just don’t like it,” he says with a laugh.

“When it’s super, super, super short, you’re kind of stuck with it, and there’s no fast way to grow it out,” Appleton adds. “I think hairstyles should come with a warning.”

Natural Texture

“One of the biggest trends right now is embracing your natural texture,” muses Appleton. The celebrity MUA points out that the wider majority is embracing a “more undone, less-polished” look these days, especially during the summer months (especially in this sweltering hot city). But Appleton points out that many people don’t know how to manage or embrace their natural waves or curls because they’ve gone against what they were naturally given for so long.

The Color Wow Dream Curl is great for this, he says. “It helps you embrace that natural texture [and] keep the curl or wave without the frizz—it can really help to set the hair,” Appleton explains. To really bring your texture to life, Appleton recommends using a diffuser—specifically the long-pronged Shark FlexStyle diffuser attachment—even if you don’t have “curly” hair. This method encourages more body, movement, and definition than rough drying could.

Romantic Paris

One place where you can pretty much always find Appleton? Paris, France. Whether he’s creating a pin-straight look with waist-skimming extensions on Kim Kardashian or styling Kris Jenner’s inky tresses into a sweet bob, Appleton seems to have taken up a second residence in the city of love, which means that he’s no stranger to the general populace’s fashionable ways.

“I think [the hairstyle] always has an impression of where we are or what story we’ll tell. … I’m always influenced by where I’m at,” says Appleton. “When we were in Paris with Kim, it was classic and glamorous,” he says of the pair’s recent trips to France. Whether sculpted and artfully coiffed for the Balenciaga 2025 couture show or pulled into a voluminous princess bun, Appleton admires a balance of softness and “snatched” in Paris.

Sophisticated Updos

“I loved Kim’s updo in Paris. … It felt very couture, in a way,” muses Appleton. “I liked the way it kind of pulled the face—it was very feminine and glamorous, but it was still snatched and cool.” The stylist adds that he favors hairstyles that “contrast between cool and glam,” a balance the French seem to have nailed down to a T.

While it might be challenging to recreate Kardashian’s exact updo at home (though definitely worth showing a picture to your stylist for wedding guest glam), Appleton has a few pro tips for pulled-back looks that make at-home styling easy.

“For getting that snatched look, you’ve got to make sure all of that hair is going in the right direction [of the ponytail], so I spend quite a bit of time prepping the hair so it’s more effortless to put it up,” says Appleton. He recommends drying your hair in the direction of your updo to avoid lumps and bumps. “Those kinds of tips make a big difference for me,” he adds.

“I loved Nicole Kidman’s effortless hair,” Appleton says of the honey-colored, wavy tresses he styled on the actress for the 2025 Critics' Choice Awards. Her hair is lightly textured, with very loose waves along the length of her hair—sans curl at the root and the ends. The key to keeping these styles from looking too perfect? Appleton especially appreciates this style in the summer, when the humidity and heat can get the best of your strands. “People tend to embrace [their natural texture] because they can’t fight against it,” he explains. You might look at this picture of Hailey Bieber and see yet another bob, but actually, Appleton is cool with this one. He appreciates the longer bobs, like his client Khloé Kardashian’s (“I love the versatility of that [style],” he says), but what we’re really zeroing in on here is her hair color.

“The mocha mousse [shade] is really popular,” says Appleton, a hue popularized across the fashion scene after being named Pantone’s Color of the Year in 2025. “I think people are going for that mixture of cool and warm tones, and a combination of light and dark.” The stylist explains how brunettes can go lighter and warmer to achieve this tone, but he also loves this hue as a tint for blondes.

“It’s kind of a nice world for blondes to play in as well,” he adds. “I think colors this season [lean] more towards the natural side, which is really pretty.” The main trend, Appleton says, is hair health, which is the most important of all.

Back to side parts, are we? This “dated” look is especially cute on curly hair, adding an extra boost in volume when spirals are swooped to the side. This two-second trick is the quickest way to transform flat hair into something bouncy, and accessories like barrettes, or even flowers, make this look oh so dreamy.

Flipped-Out Lob

Did I not say that flipped-out ends look super cute on short hair? This hairstyle requires length that goes a little past your collarbones, but that’s not to say that shorter styles with flippy ends aren’t just as chic (just take Khloé Kardashian’s adorable clipped version from a few months ago). This half-up, half-down style feels perfect for formal events like weddings or holiday parties, as it's playful without looking juvenile.

How Should I Style Collarbone-Length Hair?

To Washington, the way you style your shoulder-sheared hair should be based on vibes. This cut is versatile, so the styling options are virtually endless—but if he had to pick, he’s going glam.

“If I want that old money vintage blowout, I grab my BabylissPro Style/Switch Multi-Styler,” says the celebrity stylist, who favors this tool for salon-level styling at home. “Click on the round brush attachment, section the hair, and work from roots to ends, curling under slightly to get that signature bounce, honey!”

But if you want something a little sleeker (or in Washington’s words, “snatched,” he recommends reaching for the smoothing attachment on your favorite multi-styler to get the glossiest results. “Glide it through small sections, and finish with a shine serum for that glass-hair effect,” Washington advises. “You can go for glam or minimal, and this length is the perfect canvas for both. Either way, she’s giving.”

Kasper Heemskerk, Balmain Hair Couture international education director and colorist, confirms it. "For this season's transition, we're embracing tones that soften summer brightness without requiring high upkeep," he says.

Low-commitment glossing also offers high shine with minimal root contrast," he says.

Smoked Caramel

According to Heemskerk, a soft balayage is a great way to transition your summer color into fall. One way he loves to do this is choosing a dimensional brunette shade and pairing it with a soft golden-caramel balayage to give it some extra warmth. "It grows out effortlessly and flatters natural brunettes seeking a subtle seasonal lift," he shares.

Golden Blonde

For natural blondes or anyone looking to keep their blonde looking a little fresher into fall without breaking the bank, celebrity colorist Naomi Knights says booking a golden gloss or doing one yourself at home can be a great option. This will add a bit more dimension and depth to an otherwise solid blonde.

Golden Copper Veil

Copper may not be the most low-maintenance color for everyone, but if your hair is naturally this color or close, golden copper could be a great option for your transitional shade. Heemskerk loves this particular color because it's a soft introduction to warmer tones. "[It's] flattering in autumn light without the commitment of going full red," he explains.

Amber Bronze

For textured hair types, Heemskerk loves shades like amber bronze, which is a rich, warm brunette with golden undertones. "Tone and technique go hand in hand to enhance natural patterns and avoid harsh regrowth lines," he says.

Rich Tobacco

Another shade Knights loves for anyone with naturally dark hair is rich tobacco. While it may not be ideal for those who are naturally blonde, this color is perfect to add richness and warmth to your color and can be achieved with an at-home gloss. "You can also experiment with [color] at home commitment-free using Davines's Alchemic shampoos and conditioners," she adds.

Deep Chocolate

This is another perfect shade Knights recommends for those with darker hair. Heemskerk also loves a similar shade he calls iced espresso, a cool brunette with mushroom-colored undertones. "[It's] sophisticated, wearably cool, and resists warmth. [It] works beautifully on both straight and textured hair," he says.

In true beauty editor form, we've taken it upon ourself to ID the ones that have been cosigned and worn by celebs and content creators in what feels like a million different ways, and have condensed our list to the top seven to be on the look out for with the help of there hairstylists, educators, and salon owners: Anajid "Kee" Taylor, Sean Michael, and Sunnie Brook. Brook tells us this year will be defined by its "fashion moment" in 2025: flipped-out bobs, feather bangs, and pixie-bob hybrids that are effortless and eye-catching are on the rise. "After years of long, glossy, lived-in hair, people are craving cuts with personality that work with their natural pattern, take less time to style, and look cool straight out of the shower," she says. "It's a move toward freedom and individuality—aka short hair with shape and attitude, not a one-size-fits-all blunt bob like seasons past."

Taylor echoes Brook's sentiment, highlighting the increased attention given to embracing natural textures in new, stylish ways. "We’re seeing softer edges, more movement, and cuts that work with your natural texture instead of trying to control it. In the past, styles leaned super blunt or super choppy—now it’s all about balance and shape that feels effortless. The energy is less 'perfect' and more 'real,' which makes these cuts way easier to wear and make your own," explains Taylor.

'90s Bixie Cut

Michael identified the '90s-inspired "bixie" cut as a standout style to be on the lookout for. A hybrid of the bob and pixie cut, he believes the throwback look is trending because it offers the perfect blend of softness and edge. "The bixie channels that nostalgic ’90s vibe, but the choppy layers and lived-in texture give it a fresh, modern edge. It’s low-maintenance, versatile, and a great option for those wanting to make a bold change without going too short," he says.

What sets this one apart from the other is how it's styled. Michael shares that in recent years, we've seen a lot of looks that are more smoothed and controlled (with a subtle blend of wave). Now, we're making a return to hair with lived-in texture and movement. "The styles feel more effortless and undone—layered cuts like the bixie are intentionally tousled, giving off a more relaxed, expressive vibe," Michael explains. Taylor agrees, adding that the style adds volume and movement without commitment without the commitment of a full pixie. "It gives hold and texture without stiffness, so you can zhuzh it up or keep it sleek depending on the day," adds Taylor.

Whisper Pixie Cut

We began spotting the whisper pixie on and off the red carpet last spring, but it's continued to dominate well into summer. Taylor Hill debuted her new cropped cut this past year, earning compliments and comparisons to none other than Audrey Hepburn (granted, the two do look remarkably similar even with long hair). It was created for Hill by celebrity stylist Danielle Praino. This short hairstyle is a fresh take on the pixie cut that's altogether modern and timeless.

Classic Pixie

If you're ready to commit to the short cut life, why not ask your hairstylist for a chic pixie á la Jourdan Dunn? The model kicked off 2025 by shedding the flowing tendrils she's been spotted in the past with a pixie cut in archival Alexander McQueen. The model has stunned in every hairstyle, but this look puts her high cheekbones and almond-shaped eyes on display in all the best ways. There's also nothing more chic than a timeless cut that can be styled many different ways, and Dunn had shared shots of herself on Instagram wearing the style with kiss curls, and more recently, bleach blonde.

French Bob

We've also seen the French bob, but the classic, chin-length style will be back with a vengeance in the second half of 2025 (perhaps we have Sophia Richie to thank for its sudden spike in popularity). "[The French bob] feels super fresh right now—clean lines, soft texture, and just enough edge. It's the kind of cut that works on a range of hair types, including textured hair, because it lets natural volume do the work," Taylor says.

Luxe Bob

To achieve this, look at your next salon trip, ask your hairstylist for a subtle cut that sits around the jawline with long, soft layers and a voluminous blow-dry to finish rather than choppy and textured. Flipped Bob

Among the feathery bangs and pixie-bob hybrids that have had a meteoric rise in popularity are the flipped bobs championed by everyone from Gigi Hadid (pictured above in her signature buttery blonde shade) to Hailey Bieber. A fun and flirty take on your classic bob, the flipped bob has an eye-catching shape while also allowing for endless movement. As trendy as this look is right now for the fashion crowd, this style was also big throughout the first half of the 1960s and championed by the era's prominent figures like Jackie Kennedy and Mary Tyler Moore.

Curly Tapered Cut

If you have natural curls or coils, consider enhancing them with this classic style spotted on actress Tia Mowry. "This cut is all about celebrating your texture, tight sides, full curls on top, and tons of personality. It’s a confident cut that shines when the curls are healthy and hydrated," Taylor says. My work is a combination of both classical hairdressing and contemporary art. My personal work is a documentation of both the art of hair dressing and the diverse identities that encompass them. I love connecting with people, and each day is an unique experience."

At the beginning of his career, George graduated from the Aveda Institute in SoHo and began assisting iconic hairstylist Oribe Canales. To this day, he still loves and swears by Oribe products for all hair types.

So when I saw "ghost waves" (a term coined by hairstylist Tom Smith) popping up all over social media as a low-maintenance summer hair trend, I thought there was no way they could be that easy to achieve. Barely there bends? Sounds fabulous, but my curls have more of an energetic presence, so I'd likely need multiple hot tools to create that texture—a task that doesn't seem very effortless at all.

Because I was a bit hesitant, I asked Smith himself how every hair type—from pin-straight strands to dense coils—can master the ghost waves trend at home, and it turns out, this breezy style is as unfussy as it seems. Scroll ahead for his in-depth tutorial.

What Are Ghost Waves, and Why Are They Trending Right Now?

Smith describes the style as "soft, barely there, S-shaped waves." They're effortless and undone, evoking the laid-back, '70s-inspired energy of a billowy boho dress. In fact, celebrities like Sienna Miller, Zoe Saldaña, and Daisy Edgar-Jones have all paired their ultra-boho Chloé dresses with understated ghost waves in the past year. "The term comes from the fact that it's an undetectable technique," Smith explains. "Rather than being able to say, 'Oh, those are GHD curls,' or 'That's a curling-iron wave,' or 'That's a blowout,' it's a hidden technique, so you can't quite see how it's been done. It also [has] a whisper of texture rather than a shout. … The ghost wave speaks to that person who [loves] a quiet luxury [aesthetic], as opposed to the mob wife from last year."

This all being said, ghost waves are way more versatile than you think. Yes, they are technically categorized by slight, undetectable bends in the hair, but you can also simply lean into your natural texture for your own version of effortless, boho-inspired strands. The only general "rule" is to secure a middle part, as that tends to read breezier. "But it doesn't have to be a perfect middle parting," Smith caveats. "It can be something that's a little bit more irregular, which leans into that effortless look."

How to Achieve Ghost Waves at Home

"There are two approaches I would take," Smith notes. "There's an air-dry version and a hot-tool version for each hair type." Find all his tips for both ventures below.

Air-Dried Ghost Waves

Straight Hair Types

For those with straighter strands (hair types 1a to 2a), braids will be your best friends. "Braiding the hair can work really well if we're working on a thicker straight hair type," Smith shares. "Finer, straight hair types tend to look a little bit crimped if you braid them." If you do have finer locks, just keep the braids really loose to encourage more relaxed bends.

Before braiding, prep your strands with lightweight hydrators (think leave-ins and sea salt sprays) to moisturise without weighing down the waves. Braid the hair—either two pigtails or one larger plait—and leave them on overnight. "I wouldn't sleep with it completely wet in a braid, because it just won't dry," Smith shares. (That's where the lightweight sprays come in handy to encourage a bit of texture as it air-dries.) When you wake up, "a little impression of a bend can come into the hair," he shares.

Wavy-Curly Hair Types

"Those with any kind of wave or loose curl can achieve ghost waves quite easily," declares Smith. "There's a natural ghost wave underlying in the hair; it's just about how you prep."

That said, the exact prep steps will differ depending on your exact curl type (from 2b to 3a). "If your natural waves drop out quite easily, prepping the hair with a light-moisture, strong-hold product—like a hair mousse or a gel—is the best way to start," Smith suggests. "[That's] going to be the right consistency to encourage the texture contract and get a little bit stronger." Simply scrunch in your mousse or gel of choice into freshly washed, towel-dried hair without brushing it through, and let it air-dry.

Once your waves are completely dry, scrunch once again with your fingertips to eliminate any crispiness. "Then I would simply put your head upside down and spray through some texture spray to loosen it up and get that fluffy haze to it," adds Smith. If you find that your waves still haven't contracted as much as you'd like, you can add some styling powder to give them more body; focus the powder on your roots, gently working it through your hair to encourage volume.

If your waves or curls don't have as much trouble holding their shape, "the only difference is to use stronger moisture and lighter hold," explains Smith. Think creams, oils, and balms—anything super nourishing that has a bit of weight to it. "Brush that through the texture, and then shake it without scrunching," Smith instructs. Let the hair air-dry, and do your best not to touch it (tempting as it may be). "Letting it fully air-dry will lock the texture in. You can shake and fluff it up as much as you want once it's dry, and you'll have a bit more control over the result," he adds.

Curly Coily Hair Types

For curly, coily hair, natural ghost waves will have more than an undetectable bend. "If you want the Miley Cyrus [circa 2010] sort of ghost wave, then you would need to get a silk press first, straighten [the hair] all out, and then bend the waves in." That said, the ghost waves trend can also just refer to an air-dried wash-and-go, so you can adapt it to your curl pattern. According to Smith, those with tighter textures can achieve a curlier version of ghost waves by doing a two- or three-strand twist-out.

Again, you'll want to prep freshly washed hair with moisturising creams, oils, and balms. You can also gently pre-stretch the strands with your fingers or a paddle brush before twisting your hair section by section. "The bigger the sections you take, the looser you're going to make the wave," Smith notes. Leave them overnight, and then unravel the twists once the strands are completely dry. [It's] a curlier version of ghost waves, and it's much kinder and gentler to the texture," Smith notes.

Ghost Waves Using Hot Tools

The boho trend is all about embracing your natural texture, but you can feel free to use hot tools to secure a more uniform result. After a generous spritz of heat protectant (always!), straighten your full head of hair however you please (be it a silk press, blowout, or quick rough-dry), and then grab a hair straightener. Smith recommends the Dyson Corrale, as you can easily create flat-iron waves without the hassle of a cord.

Bend the hair in sections, pausing in between each pass. "Bend it one direction, as if you were about to make a curl, then let the hair drop out. Wait for a second so it cools slightly, and then pick that same strand up, turn the opposite direction, pausing again, turning it the opposite direction." Smith instructs. Essentially, you'll want to create the impression of a wave instead of a full curl. The number of sections you style will depend on your hair's thickness and texture, but remember that the waves are supposed to be irregular—nothing too perfect.

To make things even easier, he says you can also grab a two- or three-pronged waver to create those impressions. "The trick there is [using] really big, irregularly shaped sections," he shares, praising GHD's Triple Barrel Waver. "It's a really big, chunky one, and [the barrels] are slightly cornered rather than completely round, so it gives a more natural-looking wave."

After you've waved to your liking, shake the hair out without brushing it. "Brushing it is going to make it too puffy," Smith says. Curling wands can also come in handy if you need a refresh. Just make sure you wrap sections irregularly so they don't look too overdone.

Let's face it: The trend cycle moves at the speed of light these days—thanks to TikTok, duh—and in-the-know individuals are clearly moving on to the next "loud" shade while the previous color story reaches its peak. Consider It girls like Hailey Bieber, who cosigned a lemony aesthetic alongside the launch of her new Lemontini Peptide Lip Tint, and Amal Clooney, who has actually championed the sunny hue for years. Nothing against tangy, guava pink, of course—but if you really want to stay on-trend, it's the perfect time to tap into all things limoncello. You never know when the next color trend will come along and capture the zeitgeist in a blink.

But "limoncello summer" is more than just an affinity for all things lemon yellow. Below, see how the aesthetic is shaping the beauty space writ large, from sherbet-like hair looks to anti-butter manicures to sunny fragrances that come second only to an Italian holiday.

Warm, candlelit tones tend to reign supreme in the summer, and according to hairstylist Tom Smith (also known as the "hairvoyant" given his knack for predicting hair trends), every single depth has been getting involved—from deep, mocha brown to bright platinum. It's a little surprising, considering the latter has long been associated with being icy, but he's seen an uptick in warmer versions—a hue he calls "lemon platinum."

"It's an extension of that macro trend of golden blonde," he tells me. "Lemon platinum is just the palest possible shade of blonde with a golden tone. But because it's so pale, it reads lemony and sherbet-y." (Imagine a limoncello-flavored ice pop.) In the past, these yellow tones weren't so cute, signaling someone was due for a lift and tone or a really good wash with purple shampoo. Now? They feel fresh, modern, and, most importantly, intentional.

"[Lemon] was almost an undesirable shade because it happened by mistake so many times," Smith explains. "Now, as products and tools have advanced, we've been able to open up to the idea of embracing warm tones. … We can now achieve an intentional-looking version of that shade, and people are less fearful of it because they know they have a choice in the matter."

While warm tones are seeing no signs of slowing down, lemon platinum is likely isolated to summer. "I think it will drop off pretty quickly in autumn," Smith caveats. However, that's not necessarily a bad thing for bright blondes. "Because you're right up at the paler end of the spectrum, it's quite easy to shift tone," he explains. (If you've ever gone platinum, then you're likely familiar with touch-up appointments every five or six weeks.) "So I wouldn't be afraid of playing around with a lemon tone if you don't normally go for that. … Platinum toners do tend to fade out more quickly because there's literally less pigment going into the hair, so that means that you do have a little bit of a lower commitment."

In short: Embrace the lemon shade now, when the trend has reached fever pitch. As Smith adds, "In the summertime, that citrusy color really makes sense."

Limoncello Nails

It's no secret that lemon nails are trending this summer. Just ask Bieber, who recently debuted a "lemon drop martini" mani, inspiring a wave of vibrant, citrus-inspired polish changes. Searches for "lemon nails" were also at an all-time high in May, according to Google data. "It definitely has to do with the color itself trending, but literal lemons are still at the top of the trend list for the second summer in a row," notes celebrity nail artist Julie Kandalec. "They're not only cute as a design element but also a nod to the chic Mediterranean and summers in southern Europe that so many dream of." Hence the limoncello moniker.

Hop on the trend by glossing your tips in a coat of vivid lemon polish, trying a sunny French ("A really elegant way to wear yellow if you're 'not a yellow girl,'" notes Kandalec), or opting for a more literal take with lemon nail art. According to celebrity manicurist Gina Edwards, fruit nail designs always look cool and refreshing for summer, especially lemons and cherries. "I think people will weave them all together for a fun, fruity look," she mentions.

Additionally, you could evolve your limoncello nails by pairing them with cobalt blue "à la the tiles of Positano," Kandalec suggests. Dusting on a chrome pigment can also maximize or tone down the shade, depending on the undertones of the powder; either way, you'll be left with a limoncello mani that sparkles like the Mediterranean Sea. "It’s one of the most refreshing citruses in the perfumer’s palette. Orange brings sweetness, grapefruit brings bitterness and freshness, and bergamot gives a more neutral, tea-like, slightly aromatic freshness. Lemon, on the other hand, is pure freshness and acidity," shares DSM-Firmenich perfumer Bérénice Watteau. "Lemon is also strongly associated with vacation, particularly with places like Italy. It evokes a sense of escape and travel, which is something people crave more during the summer months." It's no wonder we've seen a host of transportive lemon perfume launches lately, from Nette's Lemon Puff to Krigler's reintroduced Villa Bordighera 20 to Diptyque's limited-edition L'Eau des Hespérides.

And make no mistake: Today's lemon-infused fragrances are more sophisticated than ever—think lemon groves in Amalfi over lemonade stands. "When I create I like to imagine the fragrance as a painting," adds Watteau. "In that image, lemon would be my yellow paint: It brings light, color, and a radiant quality that illuminates the whole composition." Although, one of her personal favorite elixirs has to be Tom Ford's Neroli Portofino. "The lemon paired with neroli instantly transports me. It makes me feel like I’m on vacation every time I wear it," she adds.

Lemon has the ability to open up a fragrance, which is why it seamlessly fits with pretty much every fragrance family—florals, woods, and of course other fruits (especially citrus). "You really can’t go wrong with lemon," Watteau declares. Although, she does flag a teeny exception with vanilla. "It can work if well balanced and carefully accented, but it’s easy for it to turn into something that smells too much like a creamsicle."
