As the editor in chief of Vogue for over three decades, Anna Wintour obviously has an astute sense of style. By this point of the summer, I've officially lost count of the number of cool New Yorkers that I've spotted wearing espadrilles, leading me to question whether or not I need a pair of my own. Despite once being considered "out," the warm-weather shoe style has a timeless appeal, which is why them being haphazardly replaced by far trendier footwear styles, like platform flip-flops and clogs, for the last few seasons never really sat right with me. But it wasn't until Vogue Editor in Chief Anna Wintour was spotted in her own espadrilles that I felt truly vindicated.

To attend Huma Abedin's birthday party at Bradley Cooper's NYC apartment, fashion's most-trusted tastemaker wore a pair of baby-blue Soludos espadrilles, not unlike the ones she wore to the Australian Open in 2019. With the lemon-embroidered flats, she added a striped Prada dress and a vintage Fendi baguette bag. Afterward, Wintour elected to walk home as opposed to grabbing a cab or taking the subway, a move that I can only assume had something to do with her comfy-casual shoe choice. Thakoon Panichgul is a Thai-American designer best known for his namesake line, Thakoon—a favorite among celebrities like Sarah Jessica Parker and political figures such as Michelle Obama.

In the latest episode of our podcast, Who What Wear With Hillary Kerr, Panichgul shares his journey from fashion editor at Harper’s Bazaar to then pivoting careers to quickly become one of the most well-respected fashion designers in the industry. Along the way we got to hear about his nerve-wracking first encounter with Anna Wintour, the sabbatical that led to his reinvention and new passion project Hommegirls, plus the closet staple he recommends most. So tell me a little bit about going from, okay, here are 10 pieces to I've taken some classes, I've put something together, to being like a full on business.

I was young, probably 26 or something at the time. If  you make it in New York, like they say, you can make it anywhere, and when you are here in New York at the time you have ambition—and I was ballsy. But at the same time, I was also very naive. I just said to myself listen, one day at a time. I'm just literally going to wake up and the calls are going to come and it's going to tell me what I'm going to do next. So that's what led me. I put the presentation together, Vogue came and said, "Listen, you know, we love what this is, can you take the collection up to see Anna Wintour the next day?” I didn't even know what to think. I mean, obviously, you know, she's a legend. So I literally went by myself, took four garment bags up, I set the pieces up in her office, and waited for her to come in. She came in and she sat down at her chair, and just sat there and I started presenting. I remember, I had to get up because I wanted to really show her the details of the clothes and the minute that I went to grab the first piece of clothing, I saw that my hand was shaking so much. I just had to tell myself to kind of just get it together and you've only got five minutes.

I'm curious about what that time [sabbatical] was like for you. Were you scared about walking away from it even a minute? What did you find on the other side of it didn't go the way you expected? Was it unexpected?

It was a journey of like sadness and misery, and then light at the end of the tunnel. Really goodnessIn the beginning, when you come up in the fashion industry with runway collections behind you, you have this feeling that if you step off of the runway, you're never going to be seen and heard from again. It's almost like people are gonna forget about you, right? So that's the fear that was really real. But then, you know, I said, fuck it. Is that going to be the truth? Let's, see if that pans out, right? I'll figure it out—that was always my mantra.

The first couple of months, I just would call all my friends, make sure that I was still connected. It's like, do you want to have lunch with me? Let's have a drink, let's have dinner like I was always trying to stay connected to everyone I knew in that industry, because I didn't want to be forgotten. And then, after a while, I settled into, oh, maybe I should just actually be traveling a little bit. I went to Marrakech. I went to Cuba. I went to Mexico. I just went all over the place. And that was when things started to open up creatively. I saw things differently. I stepped out of the fashion bubble. And I saw what the bubble was doing to people that were still in the bubble. And I was so thankful to have that opportunity to kind of look from the from that perspective, from my perspective. Creatively, I walked away with so much I started Hommegirls, which is my magazine and passion project. That idea came to me while I was on my sabbatical, the new iteration of Thakoon came to me while I was on this sabbatical—I highly recommend it.

I'm curious about, from your point of view, what some of the foundational staples are that everyone should have in their wardrobe?

I think that you should have a classic button-down in your wardrobe. I love classic ones that are [menswear] looking. I also love ones that are sort of slightly, I keep saying bohemian, but I don't know if people interpret the word bohemian differently. For me it's sort of this slight femininity with eyeleting details. I like to kind of cut that with like a very sort of city-cool-girl kind of vibe. So like a collarless button-down that we have in a white eyelet, that's slightly oversized and is also a classic staple especially for the summertime. What else? I think that a classic stove pipe or straight-leg high-rise pant is always an essential. I love dresses. I love skirts, like mini skirts, but I think that pants are always super practical.

I'd argue that no other designer appreciates the convergence of architecture and fashion like Nicolas Ghesquière of Louis Vuitton. Past locations for the brand's Cruise shows include architectural landmarks like the futuristic Niterói Contemporary Art Museum in Rio de Janeiro and a Palm Springs estate designed by the legendary John Lautner. For Cruise 2023, Louis Vuitton returned to California, but this time closer to the ocean—well, actually, perched directly on top of crashing waves—at the Salk Institute in San Diego.

I was born and raised in San Diego and return often, so I was particularly ecstatic about the location choice. How often do I get to work from my childhood bedroom in the morning and go to a Louis Vuitton show at night? Not very. Below, I've detailed everything you should know about the magical event that surpassed all of my expectations. 

The Venue

As a scientific research facility, the Salk Institute is typically all lab coats and no LV logos, but that changed for one special night in May. It was designed by Louis Kahn in 1965 and is a famous example of brutalist architecture, which is characterized by the use of concrete, harsh angles, and large-scale structures.

Nothing about the Cruise 2023 show was an accident. The event was perfectly timed with the sunset, which cast a dreamy glow on the stark concrete scene, and the collection was specifically designed to reflect the setting sun. Or, as the press release more eloquently states, "the unique light of the West Coast created prisms on clothes full of reflections." Songs from the American band Sparks formed the soundtrack, including "The Number One Song in Heaven" from 1979.

The institute was founded by Dr. Jonas Salk, who invented the polio vaccine—an apt tie-in to the world's current state of affairs considering that an event of this size would never have occurred without the COVID-19 vaccine. 

With some silhouettes reminiscent of UFOs, the futuristic designs set against an ombré sky reminded me of the lyrics from one of my favorite Neil Young songs: "I dreamed I saw the silver spaceships flying in the yellow haze of the sun." Is that on the nose or what? 

The Celebrity Attendees

Naturally, Louis Vuitton brought the fashion crowd along to San Diego. Many of the stars that LV dressed for the Met Gala earlier this month were out in full force for the Cruise show, including Gemma Chan, Phoebe Dynevor, and Chloë Grace Moretz. Bollywood star Deepika Padukone was also in attendance, hot off the heels of her appointment as the brand's first ambassador from India. Director Ava DuVernay and Anna Wintour also rounded out the lengthy guest list.

Leave it to Louis Vuitton to make "damaged" goods look impossibly cool. Most of us go to great pains to avoid denting our luggage, so the brand's newest design is certainly unexpected but will no doubt be hugely popular come 2023. "A new bag from Nicolas Ghesquière’s collection brings hallmarks of the maison's historic trunks to a soft leather design," the brand said in a statement. Another new bag, the Petite Valise, combines the iconic LV monogram with mirrored details and industrial hardware. 

The Models

No, the Louis Vuitton Cruise show did not have any Hadids or Jenners walking the runway. Instead, it offered something even better: a delightfully unexpected cast of models that included double-amputee Lauren Wasser flaunting her golden prosthetic legs, 18-year-old Olympic skier Eileen Gu, and Olympic track star Dalilah Muhammad. 

My Top 10 Favorite Runway Looks

The collection featured a whopping 56 different looks, so it was extremely difficult to narrow it down to my 10 favorites. From draped outfits that looked like they stepped right off the set of Dune to spaceship-worthy metallics, I believe these looks best represent Ghesquière's singular vision and immense artistic talent.

Amy Odell is a fashion journalist, former editor at Cosmopolitan.com, and a founding blogger of New York Magazine's The Cut, but her latest work tackles fashion from a different perspective. She's obviously a very fascinating person, but I'm curious about your own motivation and desire to write this book. Why this book, and why now?

I started on the book in 2018, and it came to me through the publisher—they had had the idea. And I knew one of the editors over who I worked with on the book, Karyn Marcus, who was phenomenal. She acquired my first book, so that was that connection. I didn't think I would ever write a book like this, to be honest with you. I wanted to write essays. I wanted to write humor. I didn't think I was ever going to write a biography. I was waiting to go into labor with my son, and I must have been five days late. So I was super stressed out about that. And I get this call from my agent, and she says, "They're interested in an Anna biography, and they thought of you. What do you think about that?" And I got a shiver up my spine. I just got chills. I thought, "That sounds like an incredible assignment." I got on the phone with Karyn and another editor, Aimée Bell. And Aimée said it's the idea that's hiding in plain sight.

Also around this time in 2018, I'm sure you remember this, Hillary, but there were rumors that Anna was going to leave Vogue. And they were printed in the New York Post, and it trended on Twitter, and huge fashion stories don't blow up like this. But Anna is an icon who transcends fashion, and she's a significant part of culture and has been for 34 years. And when you think of the opportunity with a book about someone like Anna, it is one thing to get to the top. It is another to stay there. And she has been there running Vogue since the summer of 1988. And as I said, 34 years at the helm. You think of other business leaders like Jeff Bezos. He left [his role as CEO of] Amazon after 27. So this is extremely unusual, this tenure, and she has had this remarkable power in fashion. Yet despite having this public position, she has remained an enigma, even to people who know her, and I wanted Anna: The Biography to pull back the curtain on who she really is as a person and as a mega, mega influencer. 

I love the nitty-gritty details of how it all comes together, so I would be curious about anything that you are able to share about your process.

It was extremely difficult, extremely difficult. In the beginning, I thought I was gonna have to give up, and I wasn't gonna be able to get it done because you just have to call a lot of people and reach out to a lot of people, and I got a lot of "nos," like weeks of "nos," and that's really dispiriting. But I ultimately figured out how to make some progress. I went back to the beginning of Anna's life, and I decided to report chronologically. I had some success with that strategy. The thinking was that people who she knew when she was 20 would be much more distant from her than people she knew when she was 60. And that turned out to be the case with those people. It was easier to get people from a long time ago to talk. I made a lot of progress, and after about a year and a half of working on the book, Anna got wind of the fact that I was working on it. I was very careful. The reason I was so careful was because when I was approaching people, they would say one of two things. Some people said, "She's gonna shut you down, and she's gonna use Conde Nast to shut you down. And they're going to do everything they can to make sure that this doesn't happen, and if they have to threaten your publisher, though, they'll threaten your publisher." The other group of people said, "I thought she was great, and I think she's going to help you with this." That group of people turned out to be right. She did end up helping me. And what happened was after about a year and a half, I spoke to a representative in her office, and I explained this as a biography about a woman in a unique position of power, and what came of that conversation is that they said, "Anna would like to set you up with some of her closest friends and colleagues for interviews." They sent over a list of names that included people like Tom Ford, Serena Williams, and Hamish Bowles, who has been at Vogue for a very long time. And I subsequently asked if she would be okay with me interviewing a number of other people who wouldn't talk to me without her saying okay, and she said yes to every single person. This was all done through her rep. She declined herself to sit for an interview. She declined several requests to sit for an interview. But once that happened, the floodgates opened for me, so I was able to get the people who would be the main characters of her career, like Grace Coddington, Phyllis Posnick, and Sally Singer in addition to Serena Williams and Tom Ford. So that was major, and people who had [first] hung up on me picked up the phone to talk to me. You have to be really, really persistent as a journalist, as you well know. And you have to go back and ask people again and again and again, and it all ultimately came together. It was a lot of work. It was very, very hard. A lot of doubt along the way.

So I'm curious about whether you personally, after all of these years of being immersed in her psyche, think… Does she care about fashion? Does she care about power? Does she care about influence? What's the most important thing to her, in your mind?

Different people have different answers to that question, which is partly what makes her a different subject. I asked a lot of people. Is she an introvert or an extrovert? And people couldn't come to a consensus on that question, which I thought was crazy. But I got a lot of answers, like you can't put her in a box like that. You also get different answers to the question, What is her passion? Some people are going to tell you she loves fashion. Some people will tell you she's all about power. André Leon Talley said she's all about power. Or her friend David Hare, the playwright in London, told me she's not about power at all. And he was funny because I asked him if Anna had talked about meeting the queen, and we've all seen those photos of Anna and the queen front row at a fashion show at London Fashion Week. And he said they were just laughing about it. They just thought it was so funny that she had had that opportunity. And he didn't think she was about power at all. So I think, "What do you draw from that?" What I draw from that is that she shows different sides of herself to different people, and she is good at compartmentalizing.

Next, Hailey Bieber just wore the 2022 trend I'm replacing skinny jeans with. 

As someone who has been working from home for two months now, I look fondly at my closet and remember all the good times I had with my dressier pieces that I'm not wearing right now. Like many of you, I've been living in sweatpants, leggings, and oversize tees—but not Anna Wintour, folks. She just proved that there's no reason not to bust out your favorite summer dress and wear it around the house. 

But Wintour didn't just select any old dress lying around—she chose one that she wore to one of the most esteemed events in the entire fashion industry: the haute couture runway shows in Paris. The moment I saw her new Instagram photo taken in her backyard, I knew the dress looked familiar. I tracked the photo down and confirmed that she wore the same dress last July in the City of Lights while attending the Valentino Haute Couture show. The only styling change she made? She swapped nude heeled sandals for brown boots. Oh, and she also added a cute golden retriever for good measure.

Next, G-string bras are the new lingerie trend taking hold. 

Save for a few tennis matches and some photos from earlier in the 2000s, it's rare to see Anna Wintour dressed down. As you know, she usually sticks to midi skirts and dresses with heels. But earlier this month came a photo of her wearing sweatpants and a striped sweater at home, and now, we've been given a glimpse of her casual footwear. 

Vogue just posted a photo of Wintour exercising on its Instagram, tracksuit (which is by Tory Sport by Tory Burch, and you can shop it below), big sunglasses, and all. The post is accompanied by a message from Wintour about how she's changing her routine to add structure to her days. In the photo, Wintour wears a chic navy-blue tracksuit and a pair of black-and-white Nike sneakers with a thick sole. They appear to be more tennis/court sneakers than running shoes, which would make sense given that Wintour is an avid tennis fan. It doesn't get more classic than a pair of black-and-white Nike sneakers, so it's not surprising that Wintour would choose them.

Like many of us, Anna Wintour has traded her office desk for a work-from-home setup. We've always followed what Wintour wears for high-profile events like Paris Fashion Week and the Met Gala, but with no personal social media account to speak of, the notoriously private editor in chief rarely offers us glimpses of her casual outfits. Now, however, she's pulling back the curtain in the midst of challenging times.

Last week, Wintour encouraged Vogue readers to stay at home unless they're providing essential services. Instead of wearing her typical uniform, we were given a glimpse of off-duty Anna, as she paired dark-wash skinny jeans with a white T-shirt and Breton jumper. As you know, fashion month just concluded this week after another whirlwind tour of New York, London, Milan, and Paris. (And don't forget Copenhagen!) While we've done our fair share of trend coverage—see links above—I'm always curious to hear other people's perspectives. Well, specifically Anna Wintour's. In a new video for Vogue's "Go Ask Anna" series, the magazine's editor in chief shed light on her top brands of the season.

Wintour named five of her favorite shows—one from each city, plus Tom Ford who broke from the mold and presented in Los Angeles. "First and foremost, I want to applaud Tom Ford for showing in Los Angeles because I totally reject the idea that everyone always has to do the same thing and show in the same way," Wintour says in the video. "We're in an industry that's meant to be about change, so why don't we change more often?"

Much like Kate Middleton and her royal tours, we always love to see what Anna Wintour wears when she travels internationally. I won't pretend like I don't have an email alert set up for Vogue's YouTube channel so I know when new episodes of "Go Ask Anna" arrive. The magazine's video Q&A with Anna Wintour has revealed her thoughts on what not to wear to a job interview, the eight biggest trends of 2020, the best winter coat styles, what to expect on the red carpet, and much more. Wintour's latest video focused on Valentine's Day, but who has time for the cheesy holiday when she's doled out advice on the trends she expects to be everywhere?

In the newest video, Wintour was asked what she hopes to see more of on the runway in February, which is when New York Fashion Week kicks off fashion month, followed by London, Milan, and Paris. "Well, I find when I make predictions about what's going to be on the runways, I'm always entirely wrong," Wintour says in the video. "But I do hear that we're going to be seeing a lot of short [lengths], and I saw there was quite a bit of color at the men's collections, which usually is an indication of what we're going to see. There are a few tastemakers my mother tends to turn to on the regular for sartorial guidance. And given that she often sticks to classic pieces that could work well with the timeless offering she’s been curating for years, it’s those A-listers with more refined style sensibilities that she loves. And, yes, one of which just so happens to be Anna Wintour.

As one of the most defining authorities in fashion, it’s really no surprise that my mom pays particular attention to the trend advice she gives and what she personally wears. On that note, when I was home in Wisconsin visiting my mom, she asked me if a necklace she was pairing with a crew-neck–sweater–and-jeans outfit would be "Anna Wintour–approved.” The piece in question happened to be a multicolored gem stunner. I replied, "Yes, mom, she always wears elegant accessories like that.” This got me thinking. I thought it could be fun and resourceful to scroll through a range of Anna Wintour street style imagery to uncover a few more specific polished items my mom would want to try.

Now, yes, my mom is 60, but she called out the elegant trends coming your way because she truly thinks they can work for anyone at any age. Because, of course, the year you were born really has nothing to do with what you should or shouldn’t work.

"Just don't wear all black," Wintour said in a video last spring. "It seems too gloomy, as if one's going to a funeral." Instead, she suggested "adding some color or favorite piece of jewelry or maybe white boots. Just something that's a little bit unexpected."

Last month, Wintour was asked about the best accessories trends and she made sure to call out bucket bags. "Bucket bags and more bucket bags, in leather, in canvas, in suede, in every possible fabric that you can think of," she said.

Anna Wintour is getting into the holiday spirit. In the newest video for Vogue's Go Ask Anna series, she was asked several questions about gifting, holiday parties, winter trends, and more—and of course, she knew exactly how to answer each. When someone asked her which celebrity she should look to for holiday outfits, Wintour answered Kate Middleton without hesitation. "She always looks absolutely impeccable." And as for the gift you should give your mother-in-law, Wintour has a genius idea: a framed photo of your partner with your mother-in-law. 

On the winter-style front, Wintour was asked for her tips on shopping for a new coat. "Yes, absolutely," Wintour says in the video. "You should look at Vogue's November issue where we have a wonderful shoot styled by Tabitha Simmons and photographed by Dan Jackson, and the coats are worn by Kendall Jenner. There's everything from a great little Burberry check puffer to a Versace fake [fur] leopard coat, Max Mara red military look, and a wonderful Marc Jacobs [oversized] topper.
