Fortunately, I don't think I'll have to wait long. For starters, I just returned from Milan Fashion Week, where classic stilettos were the shoes of choice for showgoers and locals alike. At the Gianvito Rossi presentation for fall/winter 2025, the Italian designer displayed his signature pumps in over 30 shades of suede, leaning into the tried-and-true silhouette for the season ahead. Trendsetting ready-to-wear brands like Prada and Saint Laurent are, too, opting for simple and refined skinny-heeled pumps in supple satin (Prada) and patent leather (YSL).

Another reason for this style's comeback? Angelina Jolie, of course.

Although we're currently enduring the chilliest stretch of winter, my thoughts are already drifting towards the brighter, lighter days of spring 2025. After months of stomping around in the same trusty black boots and trainers, I now find myself dreaming of the outfit possibilities that the warmer season will bring—particularly in the footwear department.

Initially, my spring shoe plans were straightforward: a classic pair of leather ballet flats seemed like the perfect addition to my wardrobe. Okay, I realize it's not exactly common to show off your toe polish right now, but I'm of the belief that pedicure season is year-round. I'd even go so far as to say that the chicest people keep their pedis immaculate during winter—after all, there's always the chance of sporting an open-toed pump at your next holiday party.

Just take it from Angelina Jolie, who arguably ranks number one in the "chicest people" category. At the Gotham Awards in NYC (where she won the Performer Tribute Award), the actor, filmmaker, humanitarian, and overall icon paired her breezy black maxi dress with strappy platform sandals from Aquazzura—and, on her toes, a very on-trend nail polish. With so many years spent at the epicentre of Hollywood, I'd find it hard to rattle off Angelina Jolie's accomplishments due to their sheer volume—actor, filmmaker, altruist, humanitarian and, yes, fashion icon. This being Who What Wear UK, I'm here primarily to talk about the latter, namely her latest on-point outfit.

Keeping her daily style low-key and polished, Jolie favours head-to-toe outfits in dark shades and voluminous, flowy designs. This week, however, she took an unusual approach to her weekday styling. Leaving her long black dresses in her wardrobe, she emerged in New York wearing a cosy grey cardigan from Ryan Roche and black trousers—a marked difference from the dress and skirt outfits she usually opts for.

While Jolie's chunky knit is a cosy staple most of us would usually reserve for weekends, her thoughtful styling swaps made the warm knit feel supremely elegant. Instead of pairing her dark grey knit with jeans—as I would be all too tempted to do—Jolie dressed up her look by opting for a pair of chic wide-leg trousers instead. Letting her trousers drape down to the floor, Jolie added inches to her height by wearing a pair of the Celine Elena Platform Mules (£890) instead of the ballet flats that she normally reaches for. It takes a lot to shock me in the fashion department. I tend to wear unexpected things at times, so when other people do it, I'm rarely phased. That being said, shocked is the only word I can think of to adequately sum up my reaction to finding Angelina Jolie, the celebrity I associate most with anti-trend dressing, wearing one of the Y2K era's most divisive shoe trends, platform slide sandals, in New York City yesterday—and not just because it was 30ºF out.

Dressing for the airport is always a conundrum. I'm tempted to wear pajamas, but I feel slightly embarrassed to be out in public if I'm dressed too casually. On the other hand, who exactly am I trying to impress? It's not like I have a board meeting to attend! Thankfully, there's definitely a middle ground between extreme comfort and rigid professionalism. Angelina Jolie, for instance, seems to have mastered the art of airport dressing in her latest look photographed at JFK Airport in New York. 

Jolie traveled in fall's number one dress trend: the maxi dress. Not only is it in style, but it's also a super-comfortable and airy option for flying long distances. Just a reminder: Angelina Jolie was doing "quiet luxury" long before there was a term attached to the chic, minimal way of dressing we've become so familiar with as of late. Her wardrobe consists of loose, neutral pieces, and it'd be tough to pinpoint a brand (but you can tell it's all designer without being told). That said, there's one item that's quite the opposite of the quiet-luxury aesthetic that she's been wearing for years.

In case you haven't already guessed, we're talking about designer logo bags. Between a Celine Triomphe tote, Saint Laurent's iconic oversize Icare bag, and logo Dior and Valentino bags, Jolie is rarely spotted without an instantly recognizable luxury handbag. Since the rest of what she's wearing is low-key, whatever bag she's carrying always stands out.

There are few constants in this ever-changing world, but one that remains unwavering is that Angelina Jolie is the queen of quiet luxury. On an afternoon in Rome, the multi-hyphenate emerged in an outfit that evokes a few adjectives: expensive-looking, elegant, refined and utterly perfect.

Understanding that it’s all about the fit, Jolie masterfully styled her ever-so-slightly oversized blazer over a tonal white dress, which was equally flowy, creating a harmonious silhouette. Polishing the look, the actress and humanitarian styled her hair in a gently pulled-back bun, and wore a minimal, rosy tint on her lips, letting her accessories quietly elevate her outfit.

Keeping her jewellery to a minimum—a tried-and-true trick for achieving an expensive-looking result—Jolie added gold earrings set with a sparkling diamond and a single gold bangle.

Sticking to the same colour palette appears to be a trick of Jolie's to create refined and expensive-looking results with her outfits. Last month, she wore an all-black outfit on a day out in New York, styling a black trench coat with minimal ballet flats, making a strong case for black in the summer.
