Mark my words, 2025 is going to be the year of the peep-toe shoe. While pointed-toe pumps are dominating "new-in" sections right now, the advent of the new year is set to mark the renaissance of a classic.

Quietly working their way into runway collections, peep-toe shoes have been subtly regaining some ground after a fairly long hiatus—Miu Miu, Dries Van Noten and Acne Studios employed peep-toe heels for their SS25 catwalks, and where these brands go, others tend to follow. Spotted on Amal Clooney just this week, the lawyer styled her glossy beige pair with a Stella McCartney 2015 Resort Collection minidress for a walk along the beach in Saint-Tropez.

From her beachy hair to her flowing dress, the whole look tapped into this year's Chloé-led bohemia. Combining a boho-inspired silhouette complete with a vivid colour palette, floral detailing and a swishy hem that ensured a floaty finish, Clooney's beach ensemble didn't need a fussy shoe—this look required something quiet and classic, and a tan peep-toe does the job.

For many, the trend has been flying under the radar and probably passed you by, but the past few fashion months have seen designer brands favour peep-toes as much as their full-coverage equivalents. Featured in collections including Alaïa, Prada and many others, the "dated" shoe trend is marked for a roaring return to the mainstream next year.

Covering the sides of the foots whilst exposing the tips of the toes, this shoe style has been falling in and out of fashion for decades. While I might not be ready to dig out the versions that have been gathering dust in my collection since the late oughts, 2024's offerings include sleek and minimal designs that feel far more wearable for the new season.

There's no disputing it: Amal Clooney is a woman of many talents. But choosing an airport-appropriate shoe might not be one of them. As a bona fide member of the jet set crowd, Clooney is often sighted at the world's most glamorous travel destinations from Lake Como to Cannes, making her tarmac-ready outfits a perennial presence on our travel outfit mood boards.

As we enter peak travelling season—the Who What Wear UK office is alight with discussions about our mini breaks to beachy locales abroad, trips to the coast and every fashion editor holiday recommendation imaginable—we felt it was a fitting time to revisit some of her most iconic long flight looks.

There is, of course, the Sienna Miller in Anatomy of a Scandal-coded Max Mara coat she wore while at LAX or the boho Chloé and controversial netted shoe look she wore in Saint Tropez. Yet, the one that piqued our interest the most was a far from practical look she donned at the Venice Marco Polo Airport while arriving at the 2024 Venice Film Festival.

Stepping out in an elegant draped jumpsuit, the lawyer and social activist paired her look with oversized sunglasses and metallic-gold wedges. Beautiful as they might be, when I saw Clooney's shoe choice, my mind immediately went to the faff at the security queue that wearing a wedge is certain to cause.

Not only would she need to go barefoot to put the shoes through the scanners, but her pair also included a buckle detail that she'd have to kneel to un-do which would hold her up on both sides of the checkpoint. Appropriate for the airport? No. Incredibly chic? Yes, and I can think of many an occasion where Clooney's wedges would be just the ticket—a garden party, an evening out, the finishing touch on your wedding guest dress —but not one of them involves having to pass through a security screening.

I know what you’re thinking—she probably doesn’t even go through standard security. Having never flown on a private jet myself, I’m not 100% on the process, but I assume Clooney slipped into something a little more comfortable once she boarded the plane. Still, I applaud her commitment to a look, even if it might be a very impractical one for the rest of us.

In honour of her chic ensemble, I’ve chosen some wedge heels to wear anywhere but the airport. I very much enjoy discussing Amal Clooney's style because it's almost like she has two wildly different closets (honestly, I wouldn't be surprised if she did). When deciding what to wear to the airport, I always have two questions in mind. First: Is it easy to wear through the security check? Second: Is it easy to use the restroom in? Things like complicated footwear, jumpsuits, and too-tight skinny pants are some of the biggest offenders that don't pass the test, but Amal Clooney is out here throwing caution to the wind and making me deeply reconsider.

Photographed at JFK Airport, Clooney wore formfitting, over-the-knee leather boots while traveling, and I simply can't imagine how cumbersome they'd be for TSA purposes. I just love to talk about Amal Clooney's chameleon-like style. There's nothing plain about Mary Janes. This storied shoe style—traditionally a flat black shoe with a single strap across the center of the foot—has been popular in America since the 1900s. After a century and a half of being styled with everything from flapper dresses to dungarees, this classic shoe is still captivating fashion obsessives everywhere, including the always elegant Amal Clooney. 

Spotted on New York City's Upper East Side over the weekend, Clooney stepped out of her hotel wearing an older but no-less-lovely pair of patent-leather double-strap Mary Jane pumps by Prada. Paired with sheer black tights, a contrasting white turtleneck minidress, a white-speckled black coat, and Dior's Bar bag, the civil rights lawyer's outfit was at once timeless and totally 2023. And while the dressy daytime look works perfectly with her chunky-heeled shoes, we could just as easily see Clooney pairing the pumps with a structured suit or her favorite pair of jeans.

Celebrities, they're just like us. Except when they're not at all. When jetting to and from their red carpet appearances, traveling to film on location, or simply heading on their own vacations, the Hollywood crowd plays by a set of rules all their own, at least when it comes to what they wear to the airport. You'd think that some of the most well-traveled A-listers would have their travel style down pat, but the styling choices we're about to dive into here say otherwise.

Yep, today we're discussing all the daring, controversial, and downright risky fashion choices celebs have been making while heading to the airport, from boldly wearing an all-white ensemble to stepping out in tall stilettos and even donning heavy-duty leather pieces. There's no question that the seven looks below are anything short of flawless, but I'll be the first one to say it: the idea of recreating them for myself makes me, well, squeamish. And sure, if you're a celeb catching a flight you're probably not roughing it like the rest of us in the main security checkpoint or even heading to a major airport if you fly private, but nonetheless these outfit choices are puzzling ones for any kind of air travel.

The offense: Opting for an all-white outfit

On Olivia Wilde: Nili Lotan Blazer and Pants; Hanes Rib Tank ($11); Lucchese Boots; Celine Bag

Absolutely no shade to Olivia Wilde because she looks so cool here, but I'd be lying if I said that the thought of wearing this exact outfit on a flight didn't make me squirm out of discomfort. Her off-white suit is extremely chic, especially with the funky cowboy boots, but I just know I'd become a magnet for stains if I ever wore the same thing to the airport.

Try instead: darker colors

The offense: Wearing thin, sheer fabric

On Jodie Turner-Smith: Casablanca suit; Jimmy Choo Maelie 70 Leather Sandals ($595); Quay Chain Reaction Sunglasses ($65)

While arriving at the airport in Venice, Italy to attend the Venice International Film Festival, actress Jodie Turner-Smith wore a stunning pastel ombré suit. It's the kind of ensemble that Turner-Smith could have easily walked right off the plane and onto the red carpet in. Looks aside, though, we can't help but call out that the tissue-thin, sheer fabric of the suit would leave us shivering underneath the blast of an in-flight A/C.

Try instead: Knit fabrics

The offense: Carrying a top-handle-only bag

Amal Clooney's offense is a relatively minor one when compared to some of the other's we've already discussed. But nonetheless it's something I personally always try and avoid. Ever the polished dresser, Clooney arrived at the airport with a top-handle bag as a personal item in addition to her carry-on roller luggage. As you can see from the photo, it doesn't leave her with any free hands to hold her boarding pass and I.D. at security so while it's certainly chic, it's kind of impractical. Instead, I'd carry a bag with an additional shoulder or crossbody strap.

Try instead: Travel bags that go over the shoulder

The offense: Wearing a jumpsuit (and a leather one, at that)

Cate Blanchett's leather flight suit is giving all kinds of Top Gun energy. But it's daring for two reasons. The first is that jumpsuits of any kind are typically a no-no when traveling simply because they're tricky to get on and off. And then add in that Blanchett's is made from a heavy-duty leather that I'd imagine wouldn't be very comfortable to wearing while sitting down for a long period of time. Sure, I wouldn't personally copy this one but I can't deny just how cool it looks on her.

Try instead: Cargo separates

The offense: Stepping out in open-toed heels

On Anne Hathaway: Nili Lotan Flora Trouser Jeans ($425); Dr. Barbara Sturm x Aquzzura Storm mules

Anne Hathaway is known to be an expert airport dresses. See exhibit A, B, and C. But on this particular occasion while arriving to the airport in Cannes, the actress wore a pair of shoes that strike me as being the opposite of travel-friendly. Her strappy Aquazzura mules feature a 3.7-inch stiletto heel with an open toe and while there's no question they look good (especially with her trouser jeans and button-down shirt), there's just no way they're the comfiest option to fly in.
