Fashion Week Australia is arguably the most important event for the Australian fashion industry. While it might not garner as much international attention as fashion weeks in New York, London, and Paris, it deserves our attention and recognition for the platform it has created, and will continue to create, for rising Australian fashion designers.

Over the years, Fashion Week Australia has introduced a number of designers who have gone on to become household names both here and overseas. Camilla and Marc, Zimmerman, Ksubi, Sass & bide… each of these brands launched at Fashion Week Australia, so why has the collective attitude towards the event become so blasé? Based on these designers' renowned successes, Fashion Week Australia has empirically proven to be an amazing platform for up-and-coming designers; and that’s something that should be welcomed and celebrated.

If Australian fashion is going to continue to find success internationally, support starts at home. And with a lineup featuring so much widespread talent, who wouldn't want to get behind a new generation of design?

This year’s Fashion Week Australia has some of fashion’s biggest up-and-coming names to boast for 2018. From famous designers alice McCALL to Camilla, this year’s fashion week schedule is packed full of talent, including some noteworthy newcomers who are sure to influence fashion internationally in coming seasons. Take BLAIRARCHIBALD and Thomas Puttick, for example, both brands which have been awarded the prestigious Woolmark Prize. Or Deadly Ponies, the leather-centric accessories label started by New Zealander, Liam Bowden. And what about those baggy pants your favourite celebrities and Instagram influencers have been sporting lately? We have the buzzy I.AM.GIA to thank for that, which has built up a particularly impressive cult-like following after launching only last year.

Needless to say, there is a lot to look forward to this year at Fashion Week Australia; and while fashion weeks always beg the question of how relevant runways are in this digital age, the success stories leave us rest assured that it's a worthwhile endeavour. Thus, let us all embrace Fashion Week Australia, and see it as a chance to discover the next shining star in our industry. Fashion Week Australia is an amazing opportunity for us to embrace the art, culture, and creativity of our local talent. You probably know Alice McCall as the name behind your favourite dresses from her eponymous brand, but the Australian fashion designer is inspiring for many reasons beyond her clothing line. Born in London, McCall started her fashion career there, and her success ever since speaks to her talent. Having grown up in fashion-focused family, McCall established her brand, alice McCALL in 2004 is today recognised as one of Australia’s most influential designers.

Inspired by her keen eye for style, as well as her success as a designer, we couldn’t help but wonder: For a woman who’s so influential, where does her inspiration come from? To get a little insight, we decided to go straight to the source. Speaking with Alice McCall herself, we learned all about her design inspiration and fashion background. The designer even shared with us the names of other women in fashion who she has looked up to along the way, reminding us that empowered women empower women. What inspired you to become a designer?

My mother was a fashion designer so my love of fashion is really in the blood. I grew up with a sewing room in the house, and we used to make clothes for my Barbie dolls together. She has been a huge inspiration to me becoming the designer I am today.

Where do you get ideas for your designs?

My inspiration is constantly changing. I am very inspired by vintage artefacts and fashion that I find when travelling. I love exploring vintage shops in L.A., London, and Paris. I do try to find inspiration in everything that I do and see, whether that be a little doily on a vintage store’s table or detailing on a Victorian jacket.

Can you name a woman you’ve looked up to during your career?

I’d have to say Carine Roitfeld. Her styling for French Vogue and now Harper’s Bazaar has always empowered women in the way that she makes them look strong and sexy. Carine has always pushed boundaries in what was once a more commercial editorial platform.

How do you strive to be an unapologetic woman in your career?

I strive to be diplomatic in my work by being a good leader and making sure my thoughts are always expressed in a polite and caring manner. My career really is a team effort, and I believe that working together and collaborating are the keys to success.

What is something you’d like to see change in the industry?

I feel like a change has already started, and it’s great to be working whilst it’s happening. The younger generation do really hold the key in the industry now, which is also exciting to see. I believe that feminism means equality, and a journey of a thousand miles always starts with one step. We can all be a part and take little steps to make this change.

What advice do you have for aspiring female entrepreneurs?

Don’t be afraid to take a risk and go with your intuition. Be confident and act on what you think will work. Make sure you have a great understanding of your target market, and create products (or experiences) that are irreplaceable.

Do you think that the industry needs to be restructured so that it's a fairer place for all types of people?

I think this is slowly happening in the industry and will hopefully only change for the better. Women like Vivienne Westwood, Diane Von Furstenberg, and Miuccia Prada head their fashion houses by working as both the creative directors and also taking the helm of business decisions; they are true inspirations in the industry.

Has there ever been a moment where you’ve had to overcome your own self-doubt? 

For me, my work has never been difficult. I love what I do each and every day. Of course, there are hurdles and challenges along the way, but with the right attitude and with confidence, getting over these hurdles is what makes you and your business stronger.

What is something you wish everyone knew about your job?

That it all began in London where I spent 10 years working as a stylist and working with the likes of Kate Moss and Destiny’s Child. My time in London taught me key skills and gave me the confidence to ultimately start my own label.

Fashion is a way of getting a message out into the world. What do you hope your designs say to people?

I love it when I have girls coming up to me and telling me what a fantastic time they had wearing our brand. I really try to create keepsakes and special, sentimental pieces that can be worn for years. I want our customer to have fun dressing in our pieces and see them as a creative expression of their personality.

After keeping up with fashion month shows in New York, Paris, London, etc., we’re starting to get excited for our own here in Australia. Granted, it is still a while away (May 13-17, to be exact) but that doesn’t mean we’re not already anticipating what we’ll see at Mercedes Benz Fashion Week Australia (MBFWA) this year.

As much as we love spotting the street style trends that other cities are experimenting with, Australian style is a little different. Being in a different hemisphere, with different seasons, it makes sense that we do things in our own way—and we can’t wait to see what designers have come up with for resort this season. While we will have to wait until the shows to be certain about which Australian trends are going to be big this upcoming year, we do at least know some of the names we can expect to see showing at MBFWA.

Today, the preliminary schedule has been released for fashion week—and it already has us buzzing. Millie Bobby Brown may be young, but there’s no denying she’s already a style maven. Stepping out on the red carpet at the BRIT Awards in London, Brown looked shockingly elegant for a fourteen-year-old girl. Among the ranks of glamorous guests at the MAAS ball in Sydney recently, Leonie Hanne the German fashion blogger behind Ooh Couture, stunned in a floor-length Alice McCall gown. A self-proclaimed globe trotter, Leonie has had to master travel style—and she’s done it well. To read about her go-to airport outfit, where she gets inspiration, and her opinion on Australian style, read the full interview below.

You’re always travelling and on the go, what is your ideal airport outfit, including shoes and bag?

I often wear my heaviest pair of boots (practical reasons), soft leather pants, shirt and an oversized cardigan so that I can keep it on or off depending on the temperature in the plane. And I´m always wearing a small handbag with all my personal belongings and a bigger shopper to have some extra space.

How do you plan your outfits? (for everyday, for holidays, and for fashion week)

I always plan depending on the season and the place I'm visiting. For example, in Paris, I like to dress up a little with edgy, black [items] and some pops of colour. On a recent trip with Net-a-Porter we were in the mountains, and I kept my outfits cosy and warm. I also plan the outfits in regards to the feeling and association I have with the place I’m going to.

How did you find your personal style, and how would you define it?

Personal style is related so closely to your personality. The better you get to know yourself, the better you will understand what makes you feel comfortable. I would define my personal style as feminine and playful.

What are you influenced by?

I´m influenced by places, music and the people around me. That's why I decided to move to London, as I love the creative vibe and the personal style on the streets.

How would you say Australian style differs from German style?

I’m such a fan of Australian designers like Zimmermann and Ellery. Australian style reflects the Australian lifestyle. People dress very fashionably and always seem to be very effortless with casual twists like easy sandals.

What would you like to see change in the fashion industry in 2018?

More friendly faces during fashion month.

The role of the influencer/blogger has evolved so much over the last 5 or so years, how do you see it progressing further?

It seems like the influencer industry has exploded, especially in the last year! As the industry gets more and more diverse, there will be even a stronger focus on particular niches. Brands will monitor closely which partners they work with and the industry will get more professional as data becomes more and more specific and it will be crucial to find influencers who fit the brands and their messaging.

How do you prepare for a red carpet event like the MAAS ball?

I was so excited to be a guest of Net-a-Porter for the inaugural MAAS ball. To prepare, I tried the dress on early in advance to see whether it worked for me. I prefer to do the make-up myself to make sure that I really feel like myself ahead of such a special evening. But I´m always super happy to have someone amazing to help me with my hair—not my speciality.

While New York Fashion Week is in full swing, it’s fair to say that for those of us not located in New York City, it can feel a bit... distant. Literally. Especially all the way from Australia, where our seasons are opposite to our style-sisters overseas, New York fashion can tend to feel a little misplaced.

Alice McCall has a knack for making "weird" pieces seem completely wearable. We're talking trend updates like oversized shoulders, and unexpected details like tassels. As soon as we took our seats for the Resort 18 collection presentation at Fashion Week Australia today, we knew we were in for a real show. The runway was transformed into a decadent floral carpet, which immediately transported us away from Sydney's Carriageworks (the official Fashion Week Australia venue), and into another world (Alice McCall always has one of the best sets at fashion week).

For Resort 18, McCall kept the collection playful, with feathers, brocade, and ruffles, but it was the introduction of a new shape—ruched sleeve details—that had us most excited. This "weird" trend has slowly been filtering through collections over the past few seasons. Why are we calling it weird? Well, it's the word non-fashion people normally associate with a new trend, but we have a feeling that's because we've seen it at Ellery, and now Alice McCall, it's sure to take off next season.

Welcome to How It’s Made. Where we go behind-the-scenes with your favourite brands to find out how their most popular products are produced. For our next instalment, we visited one of our favourite fashion designers, Alice McCall, to discover how her beautiful and intricate designs are created.

Alice McCall has been at the forefront of the Australian fashion industry for over a decade. A regular at Mercedes-Benz Fashion Week Australia, her show is always one of the most anticipated of the schedule. Playful designs mixed with a strong brand ethos make it one of Who What Wear Australia’s favourite labels. For this reason, we were delighted to be invited inside her Sydney studio to watch where it all unfolds.

Who What Wear Australia: Tell us about how Alice McCall launched.

Alice McCall: When I was 19 I moved to London and worked as a stylist for Conde Naste Bridal. Here I began designing and creating one-of-a-kind silk pieces on the side. My mother was a designer herself, so designing had always been a hobby of mine. Through the contacts I worked with, more and more people started purchasing and wearing my creations, including (to my disbelief!) Kate Moss and McQueen muse, Katy England. Eventually, I got asked to design for another Australian fashion label, so I moved back to Sydney. In 2004, I decided to go out on my own and launched Alice McCall at Mercedes-Benz Fashion Week.

WWW: Your pieces are worn by celebrities and influencers around the world—what do you think it is about your designs that resonate with so many people?

AM: It is always so humbling seeing my designs on celebrities. I like to think they have a point of difference, be it an intricate embroidered detail or a unique cut or silhouette. On a consumer level, I think my designs resonate with so many girls and women because they are very much occasional pieces. Our dresses and playsuits are the types of outfits girls wear to days and nights out that they want to remember. Whether it is a school formal, a best friend’s wedding, or even just a night on the town with the girls—it’s clothing you want to create memories in.

WWW: Where’s your studio? Are your pieces designed and made in-house?

AM: Our head office is based in Sydney and this houses all our departments, from e-boutique to wholesale and of course, my design room. All of my designs are made in-house from start to finish. I have such a fantastic team of pattern makers, dress makers and graphic designers who are an integral part of the design process. Once we are happy with the sample piece, we send this off to get manufactured.

WWW: What’s your bestselling piece?

AM: One of our bestselling pieces is a playsuit from our Cruise ’14 collection. It’s a moss green, pleated playsuit that sits off the shoulder—we still get calls and emails about it today. Playsuits have become a fundamental piece in every Alice McCall collection because they are exactly that—playful. On a design level, with playsuits you have the freedom to be a little bit fun and cheeky. I also love that playsuit’s play with proportions so they can be a couple of inches shorter than your typical mini dress.

WWW: What are your favourite trends for A/W 16?

AM: It’s no secret that I love lace, so I feel that lace is going to be a big trend for A/W16. Our collection features a number of lace variations. I played with a lot of colour and contrast. We have a beautiful powder blue lace midi-length dress that has the contrast of a baby pink lining. There is also a lace story in buttercup yellow, and then injections of classic white and black laces. I definitely have the mentality that you can never have too much lace.

WWW: You use incredible fabrications. Where do you source your materials?

AM: I source a lot of fabrics from vintage clothing or fabrics in furniture or curtains. I also scan through Etsy and purchase old doilies and use these for inspiration when we develop our own fabrics.

WWW: Where do you search for inspiration?

AM: My inspiration is boundless, I genuinely can find it anywhere at any time. I can be inspired by a cup of tea if it is made well enough. The challenge is trying to channel this to create one cohesive collection. Something that continues to inspire my designs is vintage clothing from the ’60s, ’70s and ’80s. I also find that travel keeps me inspired.

WWW: How important is Instagram and social media for your label? Does it help direct designs and re-cuts?

AM: Instagram truly is a phenomenon! It is without a doubt the most used app on my phone. I am very happy with the brands presence on social media, we have over 230K followers on Instagram and this is growing every day. On a promotional level, Instagram is a fantastic platform to keep customers aware of our product. Posts to Instagram definitely drive sales, however I think ultimately it is product that sells. Customers are not going to buy a product that they are not satisfied with, no matter how many people post imagery of it.

WWW: Talk us through the process, from start to finish, of creating one of your bestsellers.

Designing the Shake It Off Playsuit from A/W16:

When starting a new collection I always look to pieces that have sold well in the past, the design team puts on their "bestseller hats" and we brainstorm cuts, colours and fabrications. For A/W 16, we have designed a playsuit that was inspired by the cut of our top selling playsuit from Cruise ’14. I sourced a beautiful piece of lace jacquard fabric from an upholstered chair I found in a vintage store and began draping this over a mannequin. The whole process involved lots of pinning, nipping and tucking. This was then passed onto my pattern-makers and dressmakers to create a toile that I can continue working with. I say this all the time, I would be nowhere without the fantastic team I work with every day!

From here we looked to colours. Blush is such a feminine colour and works so well with the fabric we developed, so that was a no brainer. Blush garments also tend to be top-sellers, collection after collection, so this definitely influenced the design choice.

Once a sample was developed in the correct colour and fabrication, we moved onto fittings. With the new fabric, I could play with proportions a little more. I decided to make the sleeves less full and add a bit more length to the garment. I kept the hemline quite organic and I am very happy with this design choice as it accentuates the beautiful jacquard texture in the fabric.

The final part of the design process involves collaborating with our production, retail, wholesale, operations and merchandising teams to discuss fabric issues, functionality, the customer and pricing. The whole process is incredibly timely, but it really does pay off seeing customers, influencers, bloggers and celebrities in the product of all your hard work.

The age-old adage says that black dresses at weddings are in poor taste because they send a somber message that’s more appropriate for a funeral than a celebration of love.
