Low-Rise Everything

According to McQueen, spring and summer 2026 will be all about low-rise bottoms, from “professional”-looking pencil skirts to Y2K-style skinny and straight-leg jeans. High-waisted bottoms have been on the outskirts of the fashion set’s mind for a few seasons now, but next spring will be a full commitment to low-rise.

Twisted Uniforms

One day after its former creative director of 13 years Sarah Burton presented her debut collection for Givenchy, McQueen, now with Seán McGirr at the top of the creative food chain, held its F/W 25 runway show during Paris Fashion Week at the Galerie de Géologie et de Minéralogie. The Irish designer, who was hired for the role in October of 2023 after a stint at JW Anderson as its head of ready-to-wear, appears to be hitting his stride, debuting what HFTWT is calling his best collection yet. An even more elevated and developed continuation of his S/S 25 collection, this fall offering featured the same focus on tailoring, mixed in with a sense of extravagance, risk, and opulence that felt right for the house Alexander McQueen built.

It began dark, with a total of six black, trim suits and coats, all of which were fitted to perfection and sculpted in all the right places. Victorian ruffled sleeves and peekaboo black lace added to the drama of the otherwise understated separates, as did sharply pointed lace-up boots. Stars of the collection included silk-and-shearling toppers that were made to look like wings, striking collars from a long-ago age, and beautifully constructed corsets.

The Return of the Skull Scarf

Arguably the most talked-about touch from this collection was McGirr's reissuing of the skull scarf, an icon of the McQueen universe that early aughts fashion people remember fondly and were understandably excited about seeing the return of. A red, large version of the skull-printed silk accessory debuted on the runway tied to a top-handle handbag worn by model Sara Caballero, styled alongside an oversize felt hat, ruffled blouse, midi skirt, and buckled ankle boots, all in black. It appeared one more time later in the show on a male model donning a leather jacket and gloves and slim-fit black trousers.

Dandyism at Play

“To me, dandyism is the ultimate act of adornment; deeply personal, playful, and transgressive," McGirr wrote in a press release. "It raises questions of character and identity, idealism, and gender. I wanted to explore the enduring relevance of the dandy’s radical spirit in our modern world.” According to the release, McGirr's initial inspiration for F/W 25 came from Victorian dandies, like Oscar Wilde, Vesta Tilley, and Romaine Brooks, as well as the Charles Dickens book Night Walks, in which a character in London strolls the streets at night. “It kind of got me thinking about this idea of a flaneur, someone who is very self-assured and knows themselves really, really well, which for me is a strength of McQueen," McGirr told Vogue. These starting points eventually led to the exquisite wool tailoring found throughout the collection, as well as the more intimate and opulent touches like sheer lace and fluid silks that feel simultaneously modern and reminiscent of another time.

Dark vs. Light

"London, by night," the press release reads, which explains starting off the show with a total of 13 ensembles that aren't just black in color but dark in energy as well. Darkness and emotion are the McQueen way, after all, so it's hardly surprising to see a sense of ornamental gloom make its way into McGirr's offering for the season. The use of blood red for languid, flowing dresses and rich jacquards on sharply tailored suits likewise felt fitting for the house. It was the lightness of other looks—a translucent, silk georgette gown in lilac with a lace ruff and cream, silk corsetted minidress featuring an enormous silk organza and natural shearling bolero—that offered just the right amount of soft, ethereal energy to the collection, thus creating a perfect balance.

Victorian Details

From the laced-up boots with an exaggerated pointed toe to the ruff collars, lace bell sleeves, and overall venue, everything about the F/W 25 show and collection were tied to Victorian London. The show space, part of the French National Museum of Natural History, was conceptualized by British Tony Award–winning artist Tom Scutt, who also created an installation for the space. Actress Caitriona Balfe’s path to stardom hasn’t exactly been what you’d call traditional. While packing bags for a local charity in her native Ireland, she was scouted by a modeling agent and then made her way to Paris at 19, where she began a modeling career that touched all the major fashion houses. Balfe continued to work in New York City for nearly eight years, but after deciding that modeling wasn’t her true passion, she eventually landed in L.A. to pursue her lifelong dream of acting on-screen.

Fast-forward to 2013 when Starz was casting the coveted role of Claire Fraser for the highly anticipated adaptation of the Outlander series and Balfe was called in after a second look at her audition tape. Thanks to her chemistry test with co-star Sam Heughan, she won the role right before shooting began, which required her to uproot her life in L.A. and move to Scotland. (Well, we did say it wasn’t the most traditional path.)

This November, she’ll be starring alongside Christian Bale and Matt Damon in the upcoming movie, Ford v Ferrari, where she plays Bale’s wife, Mollie, who is an accomplished race car driver in her own right. It’s safe to say her career is about to shift into fifth gear.

And that's a wrap: The Duke and Duchess of Cambridge have concluded their whirlwind five-day tour of Poland and Germany. One of the highlights of the tour, of course, was their adorable travel partners, Princess Charlotte and Prince George, but Kate Middleton's outfits stole the show (as per usual). From affordable trainers to a beautiful Alexander McQueen dress, Middleton turned heads in each and every ensemble.

On Wednesday afternoon, for example, she wore a beautiful blue Catherine Walker coat. As it turns out, there's actually a hidden meaning behind her colour choice, as The Telegraph first reported. The newspaper explains the significance: "Berlin Blue, or Prussian Blue, is a pigment that was first developed in Berlin in the early 18th Century, and became the lead colour for the Prussian Army and for other German military uniforms up until the First World War when grey became the staple."

Plus, there's even a second possible meaning behind the hue. Fashion film: A movie about the late Alexander McQueen is coming soon. Although news of the film broke earlier this year, Variety has just revealed who has nabbed the starring role portraying the British designer: Jack O'Connell, who you may recognize from Unbroken or Money Monster. According to Variety, filming will begin next spring, and the script will be based on the Andrew Wilson's 2015 biography, Alexander McQueen: Blood Beneath the Skin. According to Gottsman, cutoffs can be a very subjective topic. Her advice: As you get older, look for cutoffs that are on the longer side. Look for a style that cuts off at mid-thigh or the knee instead of super-short shorts.

Instead Try: We're big fans of structured denim shorts. The longer hemline and lack of fraying feels a little more age-appropriate.

The Age: Never, but…

Leggings are a wardrobe staple, but for Gottsman, it's all about styling and fit. "They are flattering for both workout and casual wear with a long T-shirt covering your back end, or a pair of boots and a chunky sweater," she says. "You can really mess the look up by wearing leggings that are too tight, regardless of how young you are. It's not the age—it's what you see in the mirror." 

Instead try: For a sophisticated alternative, try "treggings," a cross between trousers and leggings that feel a bit more sophisticated.

The Age: 40s

When it comes to skirting, it's important to keep occasion in mind. "The reality is that a miniskirt is not a universal flattering staple item in all women's closets." Gottsman says. "If you have great legs, a conservative mini (not micro-mini) is fun for a night out but not for the office."

Try Instead: There are plenty of super-cute midi skirts on the market, and we think the trendy style looks good on everyone.

The Age: 25–30

When it comes to one-and-done outfits, fashion girls tend toward jumpsuits instead of rompers, which can sometimes look young. Says Gottsman, "If you have to wonder if something is too tight, short, old, etc., it probably is. Donate or purge."

Try Instead: A jumpsuit. It's super flattering and can easily work for the office or a night on the town.

The Age: 60s

Skinny jeans are a wardrobe staple for plenty of women, but the key to wearing them is about fit and style, finding a pair that isn't too tight, or overly trendy. "Women of all ages can wear a pair of skinny jeans when they select the right cut and style, but leave the fads to the teens and 20-somethings," recommends Gottsman.

Try Instead: Relaxed-fit jeans. Squeezing into skinny jeans can be a pain, but we love the comfort and effortlessness of boyfriend jeans. They're the ultimate denim staple.

What do you get when you combine tulle, sequins, Alexander McQueen, and unicorns? Margot Robbie, of course. Last night at the Suicide Squad premiere, Robbie impressed everyone as she stepped out in a gown so majestic that no one could take their eyes off of her—and with good reason. Straight from McQueen's F/W 16 runway collection (which was actually sent down the catwalk in a version that was completely sheer), Robbie's dress proved to have glamorous surprises within every detail—the tulle was scattered with polka dots, and the unicorn appliqué was filled with the sparkliest sequins we ever did see.

Last Friday, W Magazine contributing fashion editor and super stylist Giovanna Battaglia married Oscar Engelbert in what can only be described as a jaw-dropping wedding ceremony on the island of Capri. With three killer costume changes, from the Alaïa custom-made number she deftly wore to the rehearsal dinner to the striking Alexander McQueen wedding dress that boasted thousands of feathers to a lace Giambattista Valli party dress no less. The ceremony was topped off with flurries of coordinated confetti (naturally) that showered down on rows and rows of impeccably well-dressed wedding guests.

The guest list read like a who's who of the fashion world, and included everyone from Natasha Poly to Anna Dello Russo, Lauren Santo Domingo, Natalie Massenet and Peter Dundas, to name but a few. Naturally, the event set Instagram alight with #gioandoscar blazing across the most chichi of profiles.

Thursday 9 June, a flurry of the world's most stylish people arrived on the island of Capri for the couple's rehearsal dinner. Giovanna opted for a custom-made Alaïa dress that she wore with her favourite go-to shoe brand, Aquazzura. 

The chic couple said "I do" on the balcony of the Punta Carena lighthouse on Capri. The bride wore Sarah Burton for Alexander McQueen, which came complete with an impressive long train, intricate embroidery and gathered placements of feathers. In a word: perfection.

In the world of fashion, it's second nature to talk about next spring in autumn. Such a forward-thinking attitude is the inevitable result of studying hundreds of catwalk looks from the inexhaustible phenomenon that is fashion week. There are subtle complications that come with the job of fashion editing. There's the aforementioned 'no man's land' that comes with trend forecasting ahead of the natural calendar (we want to wear summer dresses now but, in reality, it's a crisp six degrees outside), and then there's the ever-growing shopping lists we amass (OK, I appreciate that you're not feeling much sympathy here.) The vitals from the catwalk are as follows: Sarah Burton's latest offering for the house of Alexander McQueen was widely regarded to be one of her best yet. Burton kept the signature McQueen reinterpretation of British heritage clothing firmly in place (deconstructed military blazers and haunting floor-sweeping gowns) and added more evocative ruffles to sheer skirts. New York Fashion Week saw Proenza Schouler conjure up monochrome dresses featuring dreamlike ruffles and well-placed bows. Three makes it a trend, so a quick look at Chloé's sporty summer girls revealed tracksuit tops (yes, really) and tiered skirts. It's confirmed—the ruffle is officially in for spring 2016.

Layering will make this look work in winter, so slip a ribbed knit underneath a ruffled blouse and put on your statement coat to complete the look. The devil is always in the details though, so choose monochrome pieces over colour (accents of red in your outfit are good) and reach for vertical waterfall ruffles in silk. As bona fide lovers of fashion, we like to think we take care of all our pieces with the love, care, and devotion they truly deserve, but from time to time, we slip up. And it turns out that there’s one thing many of us do with our handbags that we’re never, ever supposed to do.

According to both an old wives’ tale that’s been passed around for years and common sense, you’re not supposed to put your handbag on the floor. There’s a phrase that’s been passed down through generations of women: “A purse on the floor is money out the door.” An old feng shui belief alleges that setting your bag on the floor will bring you bad luck when it comes to your money—while we’re certainly not qualified to testify to the truth or falsehood of such a statement, it’s an interesting thought to ponder.

But even when you think about the treatment of your handbag in the real world, it’s common sense not to place your bag on the floor. Not only can it become physically beat-up when it’s on the floor—dirty, kicked, exposed to the elements—but from a metaphysical standpoint, it illustrates that you don’t really show proper care toward your bag. If you’re willing to put it on any dirty ol’ floor, what else are you willing to expose it to?

In closing: Keeping your bag literally and figuratively elevated helps ensure that it will stick around for the long haul and be by your side for years to come.
