I'm a creature of habit: Each fall, I tend to ~fall~ back into my black and gray and brown and cream comfort zone. I'm not mad about it, but sometimes a girl wants a little variety, which is why I'm turning to the pros for help. I did a little Instagram stalking of some of my fave fashion content creators and chose five of their outfits for fall/winter that I can easily re-create at home.

These outfits from Aimee Song in Los Angeles, Lucy Williams in London, and Camille Charrière in Paris provide plenty of inspiration, no matter where you live. (But if you happen to be traveling to any of these cities over the holidays, consider this your suitcase checklist!) These looks are sophisticated without being inaccessible, and easy to emulate without being bland. If you feel like copying them too, I've found a ton of clothes and accessories for you to shop. Don't worry: We won't cite you for plagiarism. Imitation is the sincerest form of flattery, after all.

High-Low

This is my kind of outfit. You get to wear your comfy-yet-cool clothes and then add on some designer accessories to round it off. Lucy Williams pulls off this like nobody's business, but I also think so can many of us.

OTT Airport Style

I'm calling this the "over-the-top" vibe, as in wear your regularly scheduled comfies, and then throw on a loud, fashiony coat over the top. Finish it off with cool sunnies and luxe luggage.

Bright Touches

Many content creators are aspirational but not emulatable. As for Lucy Williams, she's both aspirational and deeply mimicable—at least when it comes to her vibe. Look, can't you just picture yourself taking your dog to the farmers market in a casual weekend outfit brightened up with a cornflower blue sweater and some yellow Adidas? Even if you don't have access to her designer wardrobe, it's easy to copy her cool aesthetic.

I love how this outfit showcases Camille Charrière's sense of humor: The outfit itself is—purposefully giving "I shopped exclusively in the teen section at H&M" while the accessories are decidedly high-fashion. And of course, it works.

Classic Lines

As much as I love experimenting with my clothes, I do always come back to my classics—as does Aimee Song, evidently. A black-and-white outfit done well is always cool, and she's clearly given a lot of thought to silhouette and texture here.

If you're like me, maybe you spent far too much time as a teenager looking at photos of cool people online instead of doing your homework (possibly on Who What Wear.com!). My wish to work in fashion fell in the footsteps of my older sister. She introduced me to the world of OG influencers and fashion bloggers when I was just beginning high school, opening up Pandora's box of aspirational, well-dressed women. While there are plenty of women whose closets I wanted to emulate when I was 14, there were just a handful who really cemented what style meant to me. One of them was Aimee Song—someone whose outfits still live in the DMs between me and my sister. We bounce her 'fit pics back and forth like a game of digital ping-pong. Naturally, when I heard Song was dropping an expertly designed collaboration with Madewell, I was all in.

In case you've missed it, Song and the American cool-girl retailer just dropped a limited-edition edit that turns the idea of holiday dressing on its head. Composed of 11 highly curated pieces ranging from swoon-worthy metallic jeans to modern pearl earrings that rival the hand-me-downs living in my jewelry box, Song's carte blanche for the latest Madewell collection has to be one of the best collaborations I've seen in a long, long time. 

"I wanted to create a collection that was approachable and going to last beyond just the holiday season. Oftentimes when we're thinking of holiday parties, dinners, [and] things like that, we tend to just buy a piece for that one occasion, and it's so hard to mix and match throughout the rest of the year," Song explained during an interview with Who What Wear. As a longtime lover of the brand, Song's intention was to infuse her own personal style with that of the brand, leading to a perfect mix of the heritage staple pieces that Madewell is known for along with subtle nods to Song's tried-and-true outfit combinations, favorite colors, and memorable fashion-week outfits.

The collection is exactly what comes to mind when I think of Song's signature cool-girl style. Faux-leather pants, metallic miniskirts, and comfortable yet chic two-piece purple sets all make their presence known.

Collaborations of this caliber, especially when creative teams live far from each other, can be a challenge. Song and her fashion label, Song of Style, are based in L.A., and the Madewell team is in New York, but despite the distance, endless Zoom calls, and dozens of fabric samples sent back and forth, Song can't help but gush about how seamless the process was. "I've worked with them for so long. I am the Madewell customer. It was all so natural," she said.

If you don't believe me when I say how chic this entire collaboration is, take it from Song's friends and sister, who all had a preview of the collection before it dropped. Their favorite pieces? The super-wide metallic jeans and the cozy yet festive, shimmery two-piece sweater set Song's sister, Dani, will probably fall in love with too.

Shopping for a designer bag is equal parts exciting and stressful. It's an accessory that can be worn again and again (hello, cost per wear!), but there's no denying it can be a punch in the gut when the credit card charge hits your account. When I heard that Song of Style, Aimee Song's clothing brand, was launching a new category, I hoped it was shoes. Aimee Song is now an editor-favorite fashion blogger and best-selling author, but when she was growing up in Pasadena, California, she had other plans… After initially dreaming of becoming a lawyer ("I was arguing with everyone about everything,” she recounts), she toyed with the notion of designing cars before she went off to college at the Academy of Art in San Francisco, where she studied interior design, made ends meet by working retail, and began her interior design blog, Song of Style.

At the time, fashion blogging wasn’t really a thing, but she eventually realized her readers were equally as interested in the outfits she was putting together as they were the rooms she was designing, and she began to switch gears. "That’s my life for the past four years,” Aimee Song, blogger behind Song of Style, says matter-of-factly when I ask what it’s actually like traveling 300 days out of the year. That’s the estimate she gives in her new book, World of Style, which documents almost a decade of her travels, both domestic and far-flung. “It involves a lot of plane rides, a lot of travel-size beauty products, and a lot of packing and unpacking.”

While Song is already skilled at what to wear where and has specific pieces that never leave her suitcase (more on that later), it’s mostly her travel expertise that’s on display in her book, which goes on sale 10 years after the launch of her wildly successful site. In it, we can follow her from Palm Springs to Phuket to Paris, the last of which was a transformative trip when it comes to her personal style.

“When I visited Paris for the very first time and saw French people dress—actually, they dress the same way seven years ago as they do now,” she explains. “It’s the constant of it: how they take care of themselves, how they style themselves, how they carry themselves. That affected me a lot. You can take that idea and put it into how you style yourself every day. You can have a signature style. You don’t always have to be like someone else.”

While Song also credits cities such as Antwerp, Cape Town, Johannesburg, and Dubai with expanding her appreciation for fashion and architecture (which is her educational background), her new book explores other ways travel has taught her about fashion and people. The biggest lesson came from her first trip to Morocco about six years ago.

“I didn’t realize that the culture was so different. I just remembered what Moroccan architecture looked like, and all I wanted was to wear pretty colorful clothes—that was all I cared about,” Song admits, calling it one of her biggest mistakes. “I was being a really bad fashion blogger because I wasn’t respectful of the culture. I didn’t realize I had to be covered up. I was wearing denim cutoffs with crops tops, and everybody started looking at me. As I traveled more, I realized everybody has different cultures and traditions, and you have to respect it.”

Several years and many, many airline miles later, Song is much more mindful and culture research is key to her travel approach now. “I went to Kenya two weeks ago, and I realized that in certain areas I was visiting, they like to be covered up a little bit more,” she says, “and also people there don’t like animal prints. Even if it’s not real animal, it’s glorifying the killing of animals."

Lucky for many of us, the places Song documents in World of Style aren’t all challenging to reach. Some are quite close, like the Hamptons or Miami. To her, it seems the point is not to travel far but to travel—period—and explore new places.

“There hasn’t been one trip that I regret taking,” Song says. “Traveling really broadens your mind. I feel like I grew so much as a human being, so if there’s an opportunity to travel, I highly recommend it.”

She makes a point to clarify that these trips have to be extravagant or particularly ’grammable, an obstacle that feels real in the age of social media. In fact, sometimes less is much more.

“Nobody has to travel in a boujee way,” she says. “Some of my best trips were in crappy Airbnb with five people when it was meant for one and experiencing the culture with the locals. Those have been some of my favorite traveling moments.”

What do Meghan Markle, Rosie Huntington-Whiteley, Victoria Beckham, Rihanna, a host of the globe’s leading influencers and every fashion girl under the sun all have in common? What do Aimee Song, Meghan Markle, Rosie Huntington-Whiteley, Victoria Beckham, and Rihanna all have in common? Well, quite a few things actually. They’re all some of the most talked about names in their respective spheres (influencer, royal, model, designer, singer—you know, the usual), and when it comes to fashion, they all have the world at their feet. It’s worth noting that I chose that expression because in the case of today’s story, it takes on meaning both figuratively and literally.

How so? Well, despite all having endless options of what to wear—with designers willing to give, loan, and in some cases even pay them to sport pieces—and likely generous shopping budgets on top of that, these women share a proclivity for one shoe brand in particular. And if you haven’t guessed yet, the brand in question is none other than the iconic Manolo Blahnik.

Now, you’re probably wondering what the big deal is. After all, there are countless popular shoe brands out there, and we cover and shop them all the time. And I get it, but to me, this case is especially interesting because it’s not often that you have a soon-to-be princess, mega-blogger, model, and world-renowned performer (and more) all wearing the same brand regularly, even if it is such a famous one. In other words, the Manolo Blahnik girl doesn’t fit in one style type, demographic, or box, but a deeper dive into some of the choices within the brand does help to paint a bigger picture of why it’s so popular across the board. 

From classic pumps literally fit for a princess to on-trend PVC sandals that rival the trendiest of versions, it’s the comprehensive umbrella of styles (all of which are perfected to a T) that make it the It girl’s choice time and again. To get a better idea of what I mean, simply continue on.

It's the age-old question: How do you get more followers on Instagram? Well, two of the platform's most successful users, Eva Chen and Aimee Song, just chatted about that very topic, so you'd better believe we took notes. On her YouTube channel, Song interviewed Chen, the director of fashion partnerships at Instagram, and we came away with the below tidbits from their chat.

1. Be original and be yourself. "There is room at the table for everyone. … Talent is not a finite thing," Chen says in the video. "The most important thing for new bloggers, writers, or anyone in the creative class is to have an original point of view. It's not enough to take pretty pictures anymore. Maybe you take pretty pictures, but it's from a really unique point of view, like you only do backstage, or you're a really amazing writer. … Everyone asks me, 'What's the secret, Eva? You work at Instagram.' I say, 'Just be yourself.' It's the most basic advice."

2. Show behind-the-scenes glimpses. Chen suggests posting a photo and then showing a behind-the-scenes look at the making of the image on your Instagram Stories.

3. Add a sense of humor. Chen explains that funny captions can be successful. Her example caption: "This might look like the perfect photo, but it took 4 hours and 23 minutes, and being a blogger is hard."

4. Use hashtags. "Fashion people sometimes don't like hashtags," Chen says. "Hashtags are a great way to tap into a community. I have a friend who is a food blogger. She had 3000 followers and is now at 120,00 followers by using hashtags. Find your community and be part of it."

5. Tap into the community. "Be part of the community on Instagram," Chen says. "Mention people, tag people, like other people's posts. It drives me crazy: People tell me it's not cool to like other people's posts. … Don't be afraid to talk to other people, reach out to people, and collaborate. Gucci has raised the profile of so many illustrators and artists from Instagram."

6. Avoid clichés. Chen talked about the prevalence of images like avocado toast and lattes. "What does that say? Everyone has seen that picture," she says.

Before the Dior Spring 2018 show in Paris, we noticed that everyone's looks had one similar common thread, and when we gave it some thought, realised it must have been intentional. The fashion crowd all wore full skirts in a range of sheer tulle, coloured leather, paisley print, feathers, and pleats.

Since Christian Dior appointed Maria Grazia Chiuri in 2016, we've seen a return to the label's core femininity in its designs. Everyone has their own angles that work for them for those, but right now I’m talking about seeing your shoes and your sunnies in the same frame. Shooting from below will elongate your legs and make you look super tall. If you shoot from high up and angle the camera down, you look short and stumpy, which I don’t think anyone wants. I promise this will work for you.”

For anyone who’s highly tuned in to the fashion world—its ins, outs, and occasional subtweets—you’re probably already well versed on the recent tensions between publications and bloggers. And particularly, during this fashion month.

But for us, a publication that loves the unique and individual perspectives bloggers bring to the table, there’s a bigger conversation that comes to mind: What is the true role of bloggers in the fashion industry today? Thankfully that’s exactly the topic that so many of our favorite personalities have weighed in on this past week.

In the most practical terms, bloggers’ work “provides content for websites … provides a large platform for brands to display their most recent collections,” Danielle Bernstein posted on Instagram. However, in a larger sense, “We’re the face of our own brands,” Aimee Song put it simply, echoing a sentiment that seems to be felt across her peers. “We had to pave our own way for the opportunities to do something we love and inspire people along the way.”

Cara Santana made a case for blogger entrepreneurship, as well, when she said that it’s women like herself who’ve “created a voice for themselves, who have revitalized an industry, who have integrated themselves as a necessity to a world that craves innovation, and to young female entrepreneurs who took what they loved and created a space for themselves and a business that didn’t exist.” And we agree.

When we look at the last few years alone, we’ve seen bloggers land on the cover of major international magazines (Chiara Ferragni, Nicole Warne), create full-fledged fashion lines (Rumi Neely's Are You Am I), and even become a part of their own Harvard Business School case study (Ferragni again, but hey, it deserves a mention). There are also self-made industry experts like Susanna Lau, who’s known for her thoughtful, highly intelligent, quirky view on the industry within her personal blog and also as an editor, and a slew more who've earned major success through their hustle—both main and side.

[Bloggers' work] provides a large platform for brands to display their most recent collections. 

Of course, this fashion month is far from the first time so many bloggers have spoken out about their place within the fashion industry. In fact, the question’s come up often. As one Fashionista article pointed out this week, current major street style photographers, such as Scott Schuman and Phil Oh, were once considered bloggers as well. And yet today their work is recognized as a fully realized business, and their presence has become a staple of every fashion month event. So why is the same regard not given to so many fashion bloggers who’ve earned their industry cred and created an equally successful business out of their personal brands?

There’s not necessarily a straightforward answer or a pretty Gucci bow we can tie around this conversation. But rather, we’ll say this: Come this time next fashion month, we're looking forward to hearing more about how bloggers bring value to the industry in which they were once outsiders, and less about why they’re attending to begin with.

While meeting a good friend for coffee one weekday morning, I was suddenly (and noticeably) taken aback by her choice in casual office outfit—think: college sweatshirt, jeggings, and T-strap Birkenstocks. She then explained to me that at her work (a predominately male tech startup consisting of only about 10 employees), the dress code was pretty much “no dress code.” While some people might thrill at the idea of being able to wear whatever they want to work, my friend shared her frustration. It goes without saying that when Aimee Song of Song of Style dishes out photo advice, we listen. One look at her site, and you can easily see why she’s among the most successful fashion bloggers today. Her expertly styled, photographed, and curated snaps are the envy (and inspiration) of girls everywhere. That’s why, when we came across this post where she shares her tips for taking great photos on a cell phone, we had to share them with you! 

According to Song, it’s all about the lighting and background. What does this mean? If the sun is strong and there are harsh shadows, take your photos against a simple wall, whether it’s brightly colored or neutral. If you’re taking a photo during the “golden hour” (that time around 5 p.m. when everything gets soft, hazy, and beautiful), you’ll get fewer or no shadows, so you can take advantage of cool and interesting backgrounds. Lastly, if you’re looking to showcase something (like your amazing style), opt for a simple background like the brick wall the Song sisters chose below.

It's no secret that the world's most successful fashion bloggers have it really good: They travel the world on other people's dimes, get unbelievable designer swag for free, constantly have people lavish them with gifts, and generally get enough free publicity to rival the likes of Kim Kardashian West. But according to a report from today's WWD, that's not all they get: The most successful bloggers have incomes that soar into the million-dollar range annually.

Yes, you read that right: Some bloggers make more than $1 million a year. According to WWD, these folks generate income from "affiliate sales, brand collaborations, their own collections, and appearance fees." Yowza.

So exactly who are the bloggers raking in the truly big bucks? Chiara Ferragni of The Blonde Salad, 28, has around 6.7 million followers on Instagram, 1.2 million Facebook subscribers, and 286,000 Twitter followers. She makes a lot of her money through her shoe line, Chiara Ferragni Collection, which brought in $10 million dollars last year. Through a relationship with Nordstrom, Rachel Parcell of Pink Peonies recently drove in $1 million to Nordstrom.com, and Kristina Bazaan apparently just set a new record in the blogger world, scoring a seven-figure contract with L'Oréal in October.

Others belonging (or soon to belong) to the millionaires club include Song of Style's Aimee Song, Man Repeller's Leandra Medine, and Into the Gloss's Emily Weiss. Surprisingly not on the list: Bryan Boy's 35-year-old Bryan Grey-Yambao, who is one of the few bloggers who actually spoke openly to WWD about his income.

"$100,000 is not enough," Grey-Yambao said. "For a young, upstart blogger, $100,000 may seem like a lot of money. [But] as a business, a legit business, $100,000 won't really bring you that far. You have a lot of expenses."

If your problem areas tend to reside more in your breadth—in other words, your shoulders, upper arms, and back area—tossing a light jacket across your shoulders does worlds to melt off the pounds.

A dress with extra-boxy shoulders and even perhaps an exaggerated hip will not make you look bigger—au contraire, it helps to make the small parts of your figure look even smaller.

Raise the hem, belt the waist.

A statement belt at your waist will be your best friend this summer; combine it with a shorter hemline to lengthen your legs, for an overall long-and-lean effect.

Throw on a shirtdress.

Every stylish woman needs a shirtdress as a staple in her wardrobe. They never go out of fashion, and their flouncy yet crisp vibe flatters every body type.

Go for a midi-length skirt.

If your legs are one of your worry zones, you’re in luck! Midi-length skirts are perennially in style, and the combination of extra fabric and a cinch at the waist never fail to flatter your figure.

Long over, short under.

There’s a reason Nicole Richie always looks so impossibly chic—the combination of a slicked-back hair ‘do and an oversized pair of shades makes everyone look a tad bit sleeker. The duo highlights your cheekbones and sets off just about any outfit nicely.

A great way to slim down instantly: put on a normal outfit, then tug at it until you look just slightly rough around the edges. Untuck your shirt on one side, muss up your hair—there’s something very thinning about looking cool.

While classical wisdom holds that ruffles make people look bigger, if you utilize them correctly, they can do quite the opposite. Placed slightly above your natural waist, for example, they make that area look smaller than it really is.
