When I think of someone who embodies classic style, my colleague Kristen Nichols is the first person who comes to mind. She has mastered the art of dressing elegantly with minimal effort and maximum effect, so it was a dream to go shopping with her at one of her favorite stores, AG.

Give me the low-down on how you styled this look.

All the fashion people I know are styling their knits in one specific way: with a white crewneck tee peeking out at the neckline or hem. The subtle layered element is a simple addition that packs major style points. Classic pieces like a knit turtleneck and dark jeans are the perfect canvases for accessories. Red is the most important color this season, so I thought I'd add a pop with cherry-colored patent ballet flats. A cream shoulder bag, cat-eye sunglasses, and my favorite headband from Paris were the finishing touches.

What's your favorite thing about these pieces?

I love how the jeans have little details that make them stand out. The raised seam that goes down the front of the legs creates an incredible lengthening effect. Normally, I'd wear heels to add some height to my 5'4" frame, but because the pants were that flattering, I felt just as confident in ballet flats. I always find turtlenecks to be quite elegant, especially in the classic charcoal color.

How is this look perfect for winter?

Knits plus body-skimming jeans are my winter uniform. It's a combination that never goes out of style. You can always update the classic look with the current denim style. These form-fitting flares have a really cool energy.

Give me the low-down on how you styled this look.

A lot of the fall 2023 runway looks that I loved the most featured interesting layering tactics, like layering a button-down shirt with a cashmere sweater and allowing the collar and hem of the shirt to peek out. Usually, I'd imagine this combo with trousers in a suit-like outfit, but I love how it looks with casual denim. There's a cool juxtaposition about it. I knew I needed to style it with something sleeker and sexier for even more balance, so I threw on fishnets, a black structured bag, and pointy kitten heels.

What's your favorite thing about these pieces?

These pieces epitomize luxury. The cashmere sweater is buttery soft as is the silk blouse. It's so lightweight and luxe in quality and feel. The jeans fit like a glove while still being super comfortable and oversize in an intentional way. Mostly, I love how they all look paired together—the outfit is casual yet classy, a combo I strive for this time of year.

How is this look perfect for winter?

Winter is the season for smart layering, especially if your goal is to avoid looking frumpy in a giant down coat. I'm more of a wool-coat person, so if I want to be out all day without freezing, I have to layer and layer and layer underneath, which is how I created this outfit. First, I have a thin, long-sleeved tee hidden underneath for extra warmth, and then I added a silk blouse and a cashmere sweater on top. This sweater is so cozy—I can't stop wearing it. A good, hearty pair of jeans can stand up against any cold temperatures (I'd know—I'm from Chicago), so this pair is perfect for chilly days, but to make them even warmer, I added a pair of fishnet tights. I know that doesn't sound like it would make a difference, but somehow it does. Plus, it adds a fun touch to the outfit.

The sparkly headband matched with the metallic pouch really adds in those details that make an outfit come alive. I just got home from spending three weeks in NYC (I promise I'm not trying to make anyone jealous), and while I was there, I accumulated more chic and effortless fall outfit ideas than I can count. Many of these outfit formulas consist of denim, leather jackets, and simple knits—items that East Coast–based WWW editor Jasmine Fox-Suliaman tells me are part of every NYC girl's capsule wardrobe. "I'm a sucker for vegan-leather pants, so I knew I had to try on this pair from AG. I wanted to wear a great pair of pants that seamlessly transition from work to the weekend, so I styled these with pumps, a wrap top, and a shoulder bag. You may think that living in L.A. means I wouldn't really know how to dress for fall, but I'm here to explain why that's not true. When it comes to fall outfits, I actually have quite an advantage: L.A.'s moderate weather gives me more time to curate the perfect seasonal wardrobe, source inspo, and even practice a little trial-and-error ahead of the cooler days.

So for the past few weeks, I've been doing exactly with the help of my co-worker, fashion editor Anneliese Dominguez. Not to brag, but I think we've got some pretty genius outfits to share. They're all low-key, stylish, and perfect for everyday wear thanks to the cool pieces we found in AG's new collection. You'll find everything from denim to knits to vegan-leather outerwear in these four looks.

"When fall comes around, I usually reach for my never-ending collection of jeans, but this year is different," Anneliese tells me. She's got another denim style on her mind: midi skirts. A true L.A. girl, she styled this washed-grey skirt from AG with a ribbed tank and a lightweight, cropped denim jacket, but a wool or vegan-leather blazer and turtleneck will make an easy swap on cooler days. "This midi skirt maintains the casual element in my outfit but steps it up a notch, and the tall boots are a chic, fashion person–approved touch," she says. 

Speaking of fantastic outerwear options, Anneliese has found her go-to for rain or shine. "The quilted fabric feels very on-trend for the season, and the color is that perfect olive-green shade that you can pair with just about everything in your closet. Plus, it's lightweight but surprisingly warm," she explains. (Side note: This embroidered utility jacket is upcycled from vintage garments, so each one is unique.) As for her casual-cool styling, Anneliese decided to "let the jacket steal the show and keep the rest of the look simpler by adding an easy cropped tee, relaxed trousers, and chunky penny loafers." No notes.

I reach for denim at least five days a week, so most of my favorite fall 'fits involve a good pair of jeans. I'm really into intentionally baggy, loose-fitting jeans right now, and this Ezzra style from AG is so good I had to get it in two washes (more on that later). I styled this medium-blue pair with a denim vest worn as a top for a denim-on-denim look that makes a statement but still feels effortless. Expect to see me in these jeans often. I'll be styling them with chunky sweaters, long-sleeve tees, and more soon.

I wasn't lying when I said I loved these jeans so much I got multiple pairs. I took note of Anneliese's denim skirt when choosing this distressed grey wash, and I'm so happy I did. Trust me: They're just as easy to style as blue jeans. I wanted to stick to a neutral palette here, so a black turtleneck and accessories were the move. The star of this look is clearly this dreamy, grey, vegan-leather jacket. The fabric is buttery soft (as are all the pieces in AG's vegan-leather collection, by the way), and thanks to the tie, it's quite versatile. My other blazers don't really stand a chance this fall, and I'm okay with that.

Someone once told me, "Your wardrobe is only as strong as your basics," and that's all I'm thinking about as I refresh my staples for fall. As I've gotten older and cycled through many different trends, I've found that the items I wear on repeat (tees, tanks, denim, and jackets) are really at the heart of my personal style. I'm looking to refresh and reinvest for the new season, and one of the first places I always turn to is AG. When it comes to the amount of denim one should own, the limit does not exist. I've long accepted my fate as a denim lover, so this season, I turned to a handful of stylish people—content creators Claire Most and Mecah Wirht and WWW editors Indya Brown and Anna LaPlaca—for some insight about where I should get my next pair. The vote was unanimous: AG. But when I tried to decide which style should I get, well, that's where things got tough. While one friend made the case for a classic straight-leg, another made a convincing argument for the trendier boyfriend style. And don't get me started on the wide-leg and bootcut fanatics. So many denim trends, so little time, am I right? At the end of the day, I'm going to try all of them. "I've been wearing straight-leg jeans for the past couple of years because they go with everything. Plus, they're super comfortable. I truly believe that if you're feeling uncomfortable or constricted in your clothes, it brings your overall confidence down. So feeling good in my jeans is super important for me! I think that denim works for all seasons, but I styled this pair with a leather jacket to bring a more seasonal vibe to the outfit. The sneakers keep it casual, but heels or boots could make this look more elegant. The outfit is simple (and incredibly easy to put together) yet elevated!" 

"A good pair of vintage jeans can be really hard to find, so when I saw the Clove, I knew this pair was going to be a staple in my wardrobe. The boyfriend style looks and feels like that perfect pair of vintage jeans. They look great with a messy roll-up at the ankle or fully unrolled. You could wear this look anywhere and everywhere. Throw on a slide and go to lunch on the beach. Throw on a loafer and hit the city. Throw on a heel or boot and go to dinner. It's such a classic look." 

"I'm a curvy girl, so wide-leg jeans are my go-to silhouette. They accentuate my proportions nicely, and I never have to try on several pairs before finding the right fit (like I do with straight-leg or skinny jeans). I fell in love with these as soon as I slipped them on. They're really comfortable and aren't too restrictive, which is usually my biggest gripe with expensive jeans. I'm really into double-denim looks at the moment, and these two pieces are a dream team because the jacket is cropped while the jeans are high-waisted, ultimately balancing the proportions. I threw in some gold jewelry and a white tank (my holy-grail combo), and I received so many compliments on my entire outfit."

"As an editor, I always have my finger on the pulse of what's trending, and I've noticed that sleek bootcut silhouettes are bubbling up a lot more this fall. Naturally, I jumped at the chance to test out the denim trend for myself. I love how the subtle flared-out shape makes my legs look miles long, especially when paired with a heeled shoe like the boots I wore with this look. Whenever I try a new trend, I like to make it the main event of my outfit and keep the rest pretty classic, so I wore the jeans with a simple knit turtleneck and an oversize vegan-leather jacket. Easy, sleek, and highly repeatable." 

When it comes to summer dressing, digital creator and fashion enthusiast Jourdan Sloane knows a thing or two. Just peek at her IG, and you'll find a slew of genius outfits that give off that effortlessly cool vibe that I strive for on the daily. And recently, I got the low-down from Sloane herself on the wardrobe staples she's been eyeing to complete her perfect summer 'fits. "Even when going out, I like to keep things classic and pared back. It's a Monday, after all, but there's never a wrong time for a dinner date. Wide-leg, high-waisted jeans are flattering and just look fancier than a regular pair of boyfriend jeans. (I've never had jeans that fit this well.) With the addition of strappy heels, a gold chain, and a leather bag, I was ready to go for the night."

I never buy anything full-price. Okay, maybe not never, but it’s definitely a rarity since every time I do buy something full-price, it goes on sale. I bought a white cinched-waist dress a few months ago—now it’s 40% off. Cropped Re/Done T-shirt—now 60% off. Frayed jeans—now 15% off. And thus I have sworn to myself that from now on, I only buy on sale.

Occasionally, this rule gets broken, but only when it’s something I need in a timely manner or from a brand I know for a fact never gets marked down. This rule has saved me countless times (and countless dollars), but I would say it is most pertinent when it comes to basics. The second I see one of my favorite basics go on sale, I buy it. "Lately, When it comes to jeans, if they're not super wide-cut, I don't want them," senior editor Kristen Nichols says. But just like those classic TV shows I keep coming back to, I can't deny my need for a handful of reliable fashion items that hold up season after season. Kit Keenan, daughter of fashion icon Cynthia Rowley, has been making her mark on the New York City fashion scene with her effortlessly sleek style. The Gen-Z star and I are on the same page when it comes to loving a timeless wardrobe, so it was a treat to chat with her about all things winter fashion. When I asked Keenan how she keeps an ever-evolving wardrobe feeling classic, she told me, "I believe in having style, not just necessarily following trends. That doesn't mean you can't take risks. It just means you should discover your personal style and experiment within that before jumping on every hot new trend." For me, the best part of a timeless wardrobe is the seemingly endless variations of outfits I can create with what I own. Jumpsuits are the year-round staple that Keenan loves to expertly layer based on her mood, the occasion, and the temperature. The addition of a cloud coat, a heritage-print blazer, or a turtleneck underneath totally changes the vibe and gives this classic one-and-done AG piece a new life for the city's cooler seasons.

When it comes to Keenan's style, the West Village resident told me that she looks to historical style icons for inspiration. So it makes sense that the denim trends that resonate with her nod to the best moments from decades past. This season, that means mid-wash boot-cut jeans with a high waist and a raw hem. "I love the revival of flare pants," Keenan emphasized. I'll admit, it's the pairing with this perfectly oversize jean jacket for me. The key to keeping a denim suit feeling fresh? A bright, white, half-tucked knit and modern accessories by way of that buttery clutch and lug-sole boots. A classic color palette.

Winter style doesn't always mean sparkles and large statement coats—for many people, it looks more like layering wardrobe pieces in new and fun ways. Cammie Scott is forced to get creative with her winter outfits because days swing from bone-chilling desert cold to sudden hot beach weather during the winter months in Los Angeles, where she's been quarantining with her girlfriend, Taryn, for nearly the entire time they've been dating(!) and accidentally adopting dogs they were only meant to be fostering. Scott's styling method? "Layering has been key for me recently," she tells me while chatting about how we transition our fall wardrobes into winter. "Rather than putting jumpsuits and dresses into storage for the season, I layer turtlenecks underneath and a jacket, or sometimes two, on top. It not only warms up the outfit, but it also adds interesting textures and prints that can really elevate a look."

Scott is on camera a lot—whether she's posting about getting out to vote or uploading videos from her new Uneducated podcast to open up discussions on difficult and important social topics—and even though it's her job to look good, she has such a unique way of spinning on-trend pieces into personal looks. I tend to stick to basics to create an effortless, simple winter vibe, but I'm inspired by how Scott stretches her wardrobe into the new season, so I asked her to show me how it's done. We both agree the best pieces for layering are from AG, so Scott put together three outfits from the retailer that look dressed up but in reality are so simple and easy to recreate.

A Little Bit of Beige

"Recently, I've been really embracing monochrome outfits, building them not only from the same color but also from the same color family," Scott mentions when I bring up her nack for making neutral colors look dynamic. Playing on different beige tones, from dusty shades of brown to true ivories, is perfect for making an outfit go from basic to elevated and chic. I always appreciate the touches of gold jewelry in Scott's outfits; even when she's having a heavy moment on her podcast, which tends to happen with topics like mental health and coming out in the Christian faith, that pop of shine never gets past me. What can I say? I'm always down for some gold jewelry and a fully neutral outfit.

The Uniform

My style is definitely more on the classic and timeless side, which is why a typical fashion uniform like a pair of jeans, a T-shirt, and a black blazer speaks to my soul. Scott had sustainability in mind when she was styling this look. "I've been working to be more conscientious of lowering my waste, and a large part of that focus is on my wardrobe." A uniform like this one basically has no season, which is why having this exact ensemble on hand is perfect for stretching the mileage of your wardrobe. And in L.A., it's perfect for the winter months. Not on the west coast and need to bundle up? A long coat as a final touch will do.

Matchy-Matchy

Blue is the only color I'll accept as an option for winter—not sorry about it. I don't add much color to my looks, but a denim-on-denim jumpsuit situation with a lightweight turtleneck styled underneath could change my mind. Scott's first outfit proved this isn't her first foray into pulling off head-to-toe looks in one color or fabric, and as she recently pointed out on her Instagram, it's a style that made a lasting impression on her as a kid. "I remember my mom always loving this look, and as a bratty kid I would say she looked 'too matchy-matchy.' Surprise, surprise: Mom knew best, and now I wish I lived closer to her so I could raid her closet." As a mom, I'm keeping this one in my back pocket.

It’s already December—if you can believe it—and for many of us, this year has shifted the way we dress, go about our day-to-day, and catapulted us into creating a new normal for ourselves. I started noticing the shift with some of the influencers I follow soon after we all started to shelter-in-place back in March. Outfits became more casual; bags became irrelevant; the one wardrobe staple that remained was a trusted pair of jeans.

I've scoured the internet over the course of the better part of this year to find ways that I could make the most of the situation this year. While I was shopping for jeans on AG, I saw that they defined what I was looking for as a Bespoke lifestyle, or in their words, "specifically made for a particular person". To me, this meant that there was a chance to take this year as a blank slate and create new habits for myself that I otherwise would not have to make my life truly mine. There are five influencers who I’ve been following religiously this last year who truly embrace this idea of a bespoke lifestyle: Grece Ghanem, Amy Lefévre, Jen Azoulay, Sabrina Mohamed, and Madelynn Furlong. These well-dressed women have proven that one can still look *high* fashion even when wardrobe choices are pared down to the basics, and have allowed themselves to take this year and tailor it to make it their own. I got in touch with each of them to chat about style in 2020, how denim fits into their day-to-day, and how they’ve created their new normal.

How have you approached shopping this year, and has your style changed because of it?

My approach to shopping this year did not change. Over the years, I built a wardrobe of clothes that are versatile, of good quality, timeless, and able to be passed down through generations. I’ve also learned to buy because I love the piece and not because it is trendy. As for my style, I always had a penchant for elevated basics with a twist. I have a strong-yet-graceful style that represents modern women who seek empowerment and is pretty much in harmony with my mood. Style is personality-related, and you can not be stylish if you lack self-confidence.

What’s one habit you've added to your every day to keep it from feeling ordinary?

Staying curious and active, and connecting to my childhood by maintaining a sense of humor helps keep my every day from feeling ordinary.

How have jeans become your dress-up item

People who are close to me know very well that I live in denim. Denim for me is basic, practical, and timeless with endless possibilities to style. For my outfit, I chose to pair my AG Patchwork Jacket with my AG Bespoke Straight Jeans to get the denim-on-denim look.

How have you approached shopping this year, and has your style changed because of it?

As with everyone, I have mostly been shopping online. There are some great benefits to this since so many platforms have started to increase their inventory and selections.

Books! It's always fun to dive into a new story and imagine a new environment.

How have jeans become your dress-up item?

Trips to the grocery store or walking around my neighborhood have become some of the highlights of my day, and jeans are a way I can create a stylish but comfortable look.

What does living a bespoke lifestyle mean to you?

It means to create for yourself a lifestyle that fits your needs and dreams. Being independent so you're able to make your own choices and not fit in the boxes society wants to put you in.

What’s one habit you've added to your every day to keep it from feeling ordinary?

I like to wear jewelry. Rings, cool brooches, and stacking earrings can easily elevate your style, even if you are wearing jeans and tees. It describes your own style and makes it your own.

How have jeans become your dress-up item?

Jeans are always my go-to for everything. I dress them up with blazers, leather jackets, T-shirts, or turtlenecks. Jeans just go with everything and all kinds of shoes.

What does living a bespoke lifestyle mean to you?

This year has changed my shopping habits because I have become more mindful of what I buy. I have also found myself gravitating toward more loungewear and other items that are comfortable enough for me to hang out in.

What’s one habit you've added to your every day to keep it from feeling ordinary?

I've been spending time baking a lot more to make sure each day doesn't blur into one.

How have jeans become your dress-up item?

Due to the changes we are all experiencing, jeans are definitely the dress-up piece that makes me feel like I'm trying more that particular day.

How have you approached shopping this year, and has your style changed because of it?

I've definitely found myself really stuck in the jeans-and-a-T-shirt vibe, which I don’t mind at all. I find that I am shopping more for statement pieces and really comfortable denim.

What’s one habit you've added to your every day to keep it from feeling ordinary?

I make myself a really delicious almond-milk latte every morning, and of course, I’ve been making my own almond milk during quarantine. It’s been the best new habit.

How have jeans become your dress-up item?

I’m pretty much in jeans day in and day out this year. Adding a statement sweater or jewelry to my everyday look makes it feel more dressed up.

Been itching to shop? I mean, Yes, duh, always. I'm totally a lost cause come fall. I swear: I just look at my credit card and a handful of purchases show up on my bank statement. It's especially true this year, though, probably because, like many, I've mostly been buying comfy loungewear to fill out my work-from-home wardrobe. But I have a new pair of boots ready for their debut, and my sweats just won't cut it.

If there's anyone at Who What Wear who knows how to sift through trending items to create the best outfits (that you can actually wear IRL), it's our editor in chief, Kat Collings. Name a trend, and she will tell you if it's worth buying into. I've been chatting with her to talk about the outfits we're most excited to wear when we head back to the office, and when I asked her what she's especially loving right now, she said she's focusing on what she calls "the finer details"—those chic tweaks that elevate her everyday looks. "Wearing a collar pulled outside your blazer is a look I'm really into. I've seen many women in the fashion industry trying it," she said.

With neutral staples and polished basics trending hard this year, I needed to know how Collings is going about mixing of-the-moment trends with her classic wardrobe. Spring is around the corner (10 more days!) and I can finally let myself get excited. While some are eager for the sun to set later and the chance to lie out on warm beach days, I have my focus on the exciting new fashion pieces this season brings: jeans in particular. As I get older, I'm realizing more and more that no matter how hard I try to pull off the latest Instagram fashion trends, I still gravitate toward more wearable, classic style. So when I got to thinking about what the one staple item in my wardrobe really is, the first thing that came to mind was the bevy of white tops I own. From countless variations of button-downs and structured blouses to classic white T-shirts, I can confidently say that a white top is the pièce de résistance of my wardrobe. This made me think, how can I plan out five different outfits for this season with my new favorite white top? AG's winter collection had my answer.

There’s nothing I love more than creating outfits out of simple, effective, and classic pieces. This season, I’ll incorporate a trendy piece to this forever classic by slipping on a pair of over-the-knee leather boots with this look.  

The Universal Go-To

Plaid blazers and skinny jeans go together like peanut butter and jelly, Chanel and quilting, Kanye and Kanye… you get the picture. I’m reserving this outfit for days when my newborn refuses to sleep and I have 10 minutes to get dressed in the morning. Rather than going for classic black and white (I know, the horror), I’m going to switch it up with a gray skinny and slate blue plaid blazer. My new white loafers will work perfectly with this outfit and will have me out the door for my Monday meetings.

The Slightly Preppy ’Fit

One of the biggest styling trends I saw during fashion month on the street style scene was how these stylish girls were draping their sweaters over their shoulders. I’m planning on pulling off the same slightly preppy look with this tie-dye dress and navy blue sweater and a chunky gold necklace for a touch of glam.

The I’m-From-L.A. Look

Well, I am from L.A., and I can promise you, moto jackets and high-waisted jeans are our thing. I love the shade of this pistachio (a huge color trend for fall) as well as the length of this lush suede jacket. I’ll wear this outfit combo on a crisp fall Saturday morning when I’m making my way to Alfred’s for my go-to latte.

I’m a sucker for a good denim outfit. Make me pick between slim-leg jeans or [insert literally anything else here], and 99.9% of the time I’ll pick the jeans. The tried-and-true fabric has always been my secret weapon to looking sleek and put together, even on days when I really just want to be in sweats. Not that I’m the only one who feels this way: "Denim has a big spot in my heart and my closet,” says style-setter Jelena Cikoja, a native of Hamburg, Germany, who now calls New York City home.

Her hair? Pure perfection. Her style? Even more on point. I’ve lost track of how many compelling denim looks I’ve saved from her IG feed, especially in the lead-up to the new season, and I appreciate her wisdom on the differences between American and German style. "New York is so fashionable and international; most people here like to experiment with their looks and wear outfits that turn heads,” she shares. "In Germany, people dress more minimalistic and chic.”

Cikoja’s style straddles the line between these two, so I knew she’d be the perfect person to turn to for advice on freshening up our denim rotations for fall, and I have to say… The three looks she assembled using pieces from AG’s killer fall collection definitely did not disappoint.

Be honest: When was the last time you said no to a look comprised of skinny jeans, a leather jacket, and ankle boots? Probably hasn’t happened, right? The outfit formula is a favorite for off-duty models, It girls, and we mere mortals alike, and for good reason. However, if you’re thinking to yourself, How can I possibly freshen up my skinny-jean looks?, I can understand that. Thankfully, Cikoja assures me that it’s all in the details. "I love the simplicity of a leather jacket, a tank top, and jeans,” she says. "To freshen it up for fall, I styled it with a pair of cowboy-inspired ankle boots.”

And if you were wondering the best way to transition from summer to fall, well, this is it. Cikoja calls this her "not quite ready to let go of summer but also looking forward to cooler days” ’fit. Adding a denim jacket to that silky summer dress you’ve been living in the past few months extends the life of your wardrobe while prepping you for the season ahead. The denim jacket is another classic that can be styled with a plethora of trends all year round. Try it with fall’s dark-floral trend before the temps dip too low.

Another classic denim style? Wide-leg jeans. Cikoja is styling this dark-wash, high-waist pair with a statement-making sweater and chunky white sneakers. I’ve never been the sneaker type (I prefer to wear jeans with white pumps or cool flats), but Cikoja is making me reconsider.

"This outfit is the most casual of the three,” she says. "This is what I’d wear on a day when I have to run a lot of errands; it has a touch of trendiness I always look for when updating my classics.”

Think it’s too trendy for you? Cikoja encourages you to give it a shot anyway: "Sometimes we think we can only wear one style of jeans, but I think it’s important to experiment with shapes and sizes.” (BRB, running to get a pair of wide-leg jeans and try on chunky sneakers.)

The list of clothing items I "invest" in is slim (I'm more of a vintage bargain-hunter), but every year, just before fall, I do invest in new denim… no exceptions. After all, if I'm going to wear a piece nearly every day, it needs to be comfortable, durable, and flattering—three things that can be hard to come by on the bargain racks. Also, while I may forgo some of fall's louder trends (I'm looking at you, neon), I love trying out a new denim style.

This fall, I'm excited to continue on the tradition of upgrading my denim, and I'm looking to AG to help me find my perfect match.
