Acne is a stubborn skin concern, but stubborn doesn't mean impossible. There are so many methods and modalities to turn to in the quest for clear skin, including in-office treatments (chemical peels and professional extractions), at-home devices (high-frequency wands and blue light LED masks), and powerful skincare ingredients. As for the latter, there's salicylic acid, niacinamide, retinoids… The list goes on. However, there's one ingredient that's *still* considered the anti-acne gold standard, and dermatologists continue to recommend it to their acne-prone patients. It's benzoyl peroxide, of course.

Not only does it kill acne-causing bacteria before it can lead to breakouts, but it's also anti-inflammatory and available in a countless number of affordable products. Yep, this potent ingredient is right at home in the drugstore beauty aisles. What is benzoyl peroxide?

Sandra Oska, MD, is a board-certified dermatologist in Los Angeles. She says benzoyl peroxide is one of the most widely used skincare ingredients for acne treatment. "It has antimicrobial and anti-inflammatory properties and helps reduce acne-causing bacteria on the skin. Benzoyl peroxide has actually been used in dermatology for decades since the 1960s," she explains. "It is an important part of acne treatment because it is effective and accessible. An important upside is that there is no bacterial resistance associated with benzoyl peroxide use."

Sejal Shah, MD, is a board-certified dermatologist in New York. She agrees, saying that benzoyl peroxide was officially approved for use as an acne treatment in the United States in 1960, though its medical use dates back much earlier. "It was proposed as a woundcare treatment as early as 1929, and evidence suggests it was already being used to treat acne by 1934," she says. Let that sink in; it has an almost 100-year-long proven track record for clearing skin.

How does it work?

Brendan Camp, MD, is a double-board-certified dermatologist in New York. He, along with the other experts, says benzoyl peroxide works in three major ways. It's antibacterial, an exfoliant, and an anti-inflammatory agent.

"It primarily acts as an antibacterial agent, killing cutibacterium acnes (formerly propionibacterium acnes), the bacteria closely associated with acne development," Shah says. "Unlike antibiotics, benzoyl peroxide does not appear to contribute significantly to bacterial resistance. This is one reason dermatologists often recommend it. Secondarily, it acts as a keratolytic (exfoliant) to help remove dead skin cells, preventing clogged pores and clearing existing blockages. Lastly, some research suggests it may also reduce inflammation associated with acne lesions."

It's this holistic, multi-approach efficacy that makes it *the* gold-standard ingredient for clearing acne. As Camp explains, it's often used to treat "conditions like rosacea, folliculitis, bromhidrosis, and pitted keratolysis."

What's the ideal concentration?

If you shop for benzoyl peroxide products, you'll notice that they range in concentration. According to Camp, that range is usually 2.5%, which is often found in spot treatments, to 10%, which is often found in bodywashes. The right one for you can vary based on multiple factors.

"The best concentration depends on your skin type, acne severity, treatment area, and the formulation used," Shah says. "Benzoyl peroxide is typically available in strengths ranging from 2.5% to 10%, but 2.5% to 5% is sufficient and better tolerated for most people—2.5% is usually the best starting point, especially for dry or sensitive skin. Studies show it can be nearly as effective as higher strengths while causing significantly less irritation. Five percent may be appropriate if lower strengths are ineffective and your skin tolerates it well. Five to 10% is sometimes used for more stubborn or body acne, where skin is often less sensitive."

Don't automatically assume that you need a higher concentration to see the best results. "Higher percentages are more likely to cause irritation, especially in patients with sensitive skin," Oska says. "When I use benzoyl peroxide, I am generally starting at 5%. I do not usually go up to 10% on the face or neck." That brings us to the potential downside of using benzoyl peroxide as an acne treatment.

Are there downsides?

"The main side effects include potential dryness, irritation, peeling, and redness," Oska says. "The risk is higher when patients combine with multiple other actives. … People with very sensitive skin, eczema, or rosacea-prone skin may not be able to tolerate it. I usually advise patients to start every other day at a lower concentration and moisturize liberally."

Shah seconds this, saying it's important to avoid using benzoyl peroxide with retinoids, exfoliating acids, and harsh scrubs specifically. Combining them will do more harm than good, often causing more redness and inflammation rather than the intended effect of smooth, calm, clear skin.

Oh, and one more important note. All three dermatologists say it has another less-than-ideal effect, and it has to do with the "peroxide" part of benzoyl peroxide. "Benzoyl peroxide can also bleach fabrics and hair, so it's important to be careful with towels, pillowcases, clothing, and bedding," Shah says. To avoid this, Camp recommends making sure any spot treatments or leave-on products are 100% dry before changing your clothes or lying down on your pillowcase. Meanwhile, Oska recommends switching to white towel to avoid any permanent bleach stains.

As always, it's best to perform a patch test before using a new product, as allergies can occur. "People with very sensitive skin, eczema, or impaired skin barriers may find it difficult to tolerate," Shah says. "Rarely, some individuals experience allergic contact dermatitis and should discontinue use if severe swelling, itching, or blistering occurs."

What Is a High-Frequency Wand, and How Does It Work?

In a nutshell, a high-frequency wand relies on electrical currents to reduce inflammation and kill acne-causing bacteria. "Used for decades in professional treatments, it delivers a gentle electrical current through a glass electrode, creating an antibacterial and oxygenating effect on the skin," explains Luzon. Those glass electrodes are filled with gas (usually neon or argon) that either stimulates collagen or combats acne.

Neon gas, which produces a red/orange glow, increases circulation, while argon gas, which results in a blue/purple light, has that bacteria-eliminating effect for blemish-prone skin. It's similar to LED light in that way: red pertains to aging concerns, while blue correlates with healing acne. Don't worry—most devices tell you which wand attachments correlate to which gases, so you don't have to play a guessing game when treating your skin at home.

What Are the Benefits?

Generally, high-frequency wands are best suited for blemish-prone skin. If you feel a zit coming on, a quick zap can help stop it in its tracks by killing the acne-causing bacteria. "I like that it gives people a sense of control during a breakout," notes celebrity master aesthetician Sarah Akram. I concur, especially as someone who frequently fights the urge to poke and prod at her zits (which only leads to more inflammation and potential scarring!). Rather, whenever I'm dealing with an angry spot, I like to tap it with a high-frequency wand and cover it with a hydrocolloid patch overnight. Trust me—the routine works wonders for healing pimples.

Luzon agrees, noting that high-frequency wands are especially effective for breakouts and congested skin. That said, she explains that the technology is top-notch for reducing overall redness and inflammation as well. "It helps purify the skin, support circulation, and restore a fresh, balanced complexion," she shares. Especially if you use a wand with neon (red/orange) light, it can be a great tool for smooth, taut skin all over. Some devices even have comb attachments you can use to increase circulation and oxygenation on the scalp, which, in turn, can lead to better hair growth.

That said, high-frequency wands are not miracle workers. They're great for treating the occasional spot and making your skin look refreshed, but they won't heal severe acne—no at-home device will, as a matter of fact, so it's important to set expectations here. As Luzon adds, "It’s not about transforming the skin overnight. It’s about keeping it consistently in a good place."

Any Side Effects?

High-frequency wands are generally safe (despite looking like something out of a mad scientist's laboratory), but just like any treatment or tool, it is possible to go overboard. "Most people overuse it, and overuse leads to dryness, irritation, and a compromised barrier, which, ironically, gives you more breakouts," Akram points out.

Balance is key, which is why both Akram and Luzon recommend using a high-frequency wand two to three times per week at most. "This is a tool that works best with a controlled, intentional approach," Luzon adds. Additionally, she notes, "it’s best avoided during pregnancy, in cases of certain medical conditions, or on very sensitive and reactive skin."

How Do You Use a High-Frequency Wand at Home?

"It may look intimidating, but it’s actually very simple and, when used correctly, very effective," Luzon notes. Below, find a full, expert-backed tutorial.

• Cleanse your skin and pat completely dry.
• Insert your attachment of choice before plugging in the device.
• Optional: Place a layer of gauze on top of the area you'd like to treat. This helps the wand glide smoothly as opposed to tugging at your skin. If you're hoping to spot treat a specific breakout, you can ditch the gauze and tap the device directly on the zit.
• Turn the high-frequency device on at a low setting, then place your finger on the base of the glass before touching it to your face. This "grounds" the current and helps you control the intensity. Still, you'll want to test the device on the back of your hand first to ensure the sensation isn't too tingly.
• Next, glide the device over the gauze across the face in quick, controlled passes. Transfer the gauze to a different area when you're ready to move along.
• For a spot treatment, remove the gauze and tap the wand directly on your breakout in short spurts (as opposed to a constant gliding motion). This is both good and bad, depending on how you look at it.

It’s good that people are caring for their skin better and more consistently than ever before. It’s also good that Instagram and TikTok help spread new skincare technologies and educate people (myself included) on potentially beneficial products and practices. However, skincare was never meant to be one-size-fits-all. And, sometimes, the expensive and/or popular products and ingredients aren’t the most effective. In fact, it’s sometimes the most standard and “unsexy” ones that perform the most efficiently.

Take sulfur, for example. Yes, sulfur, as in the chemical element you probably learned about in your high school chemistry class. (If I may refresh your memory, it can be seen on the periodic table with the symbol S and the atomic number 16.) Standard? Yes. Unsexy? Definitely. Yet it remains one of the most effective skincare ingredients in 2026, especially if you’re using it to deal with acne, redness, or irritation.

Sulfur For Acne

Let’s start with what’s perhaps the most well-known use for sulfur in skincare products—as a treatment for acne. According to experts, it really can make a difference and contribute to clearer, calmer skin. Take it from Paula Brezavscek, PA-C, a board-certified physician associate specializing in cosmetic dermatology. “Sulfur is incredibly effective for acne because it works in multiple ways at once. It helps absorb excess oil, gently exfoliates dead skin cells, and has antibacterial properties that reduce acne-causing bacteria. What I like about sulfur is that it clears pores without being as aggressive as benzoyl peroxide, so you can treat breakouts while still maintaining a healthy skin barrier.”

Natia Rufolo FNP-C, a board-certified nurse practitioner and aesthetic injector, agrees and also highlights its four-part approach to treating and preventing breakouts: It’s 1) oil-absorbing, 2) exfoliating, 3) antibacterial, and 4) pore-unclogging benefits. She also adds another one: soothing. “Sulfur helps calm inflamed breakouts and reduces swelling.” The latter is why it’s also so beneficial for sensitive and/or irritated skin (but more on that in a minute).

Sulfur for Redness/Rosacea

Brendan Camp, MD, a board-certified dermatologist at MDCS Dermatology, says sulfur is used in the treatment of redness and rosacea for the same reason it’s used in the treatment of acne—its natural antibacterial and anti-inflammatory properties. “Redness in rosacea is caused by the dilation of superficial blood vessels in the skin,” he says. “The dilation of these vessels may be due in part to inflammation; by calming the skin, sulfur-containing skincare products may reduce rosacea-related redness.”

Rufolo seconds this, saying the results can be substantial when and if the right sulfur skincare products are used. “Sulfur can absolutely be beneficial for redness and rosacea-prone skin when used appropriately,” Rufolo says. “It has mild anti-inflammatory and antimicrobial properties, which can help calm irritation and reduce the overgrowth of microorganisms that may contribute to flare-ups. In lower, well-formulated concentrations, it can help manage redness without overly stripping the skin.”

Brezavscek says she’s witnessed the transformative effects of sulfur on redness in her practice. “Sulfur can absolutely help with redness and rosacea,” she says. “It has anti-inflammatory properties and can reduce both background redness and inflammatory lesions. In practice, I often see it used in combination formulas, like sulfacetamide plus sulfur, which are very effective for calming rosacea-prone skin.”

Sulfur for Inflammation

Both acne and rosacea are inflammatory skin conditions, so it should come as no surprise that sulfur can also treat and prevent inflammation. (The secret is, once again, due to sulfur’s potent anti-inflammatory properties. “Sulfur is interesting because it treats inflammation while still being relatively gentle,” Brezavscek says. “It helps calm irritated skin and reduce swelling without the same level of irritation you might see with stronger actives.”

However, she notes that it can still be drying if used alone or in high concentrations, and Rufolo agrees. “If it’s too strong or overused, it can disrupt the skin barrier and lead to dryness or irritation, especially in already sensitive skin types,” she says. “It really comes down to concentration and how it’s incorporated into a routine.” (Hint: pairing it with barrier-supporting ingredients, such as glycerin, ceramides, squalane, and niacinamide, can help.)

What Skin Types Does Sulfur Benefit the Most?

“Sulfur is best suited for oily, acne-prone, or combination skin,” Brezavscek says. “It’s especially helpful for patients who break out easily but can’t tolerate harsher treatments. It’s also a great option for those dealing with both acne and redness, which is a very common overlap.”

Rufolo says it’s also a great option for people who can’t tolerate stronger ingredients like benzoyl peroxide or retinoids, but still want to use something that will make a difference in the state of their skin.

Are There Any Skin Types That Should Steer Clear of Sulfur?

Camp says most sulfur-based skincare products are well-tolerated, but he still recommends performing a patch test, especially if you have sensitive skin. “People with very dry or compromised skin (such as eczema) may find sulfur products too drying or irritating,” he says.

Both Rufolo and Brezavscek agree. “I’d recommend that very dry, compromised, or highly sensitive skin types use caution with sulfur,” Rufolo says. “Because of its oil-absorbing and exfoliating effects, it can be a bit too drying and may exacerbate irritation if the skin barrier is already impaired.”

If you do find it too drying, Camp recommends using sulfur-based skincare products cautiously, AKA less often or alongside a barrier-supporting moisturizer. Brezavscek, on the other hand, has a useful tip to share. “I tend to recommend sulfur in wash-off formats or targeted treatments rather than all-over leave-ons, especially at first,” she says. This helps prevent irritation, especially for people who are new to the ingredient or have sensitive skin.

And, last but not least, we have to talk about the smell of sulfur. It’s notoriously, erm, off-putting. So, if you can’t deal with the scent of sulfur-containing skincare products, you’re not alone. That said, there are a few sulfur skincare products that lack an overt or distinct scent, thanks to their formulation and the addition of other ingredients and scents. It all depends on your perception and preference.

In my decade working as a beauty editor, I've been lucky enough to try thousands of new beauty products. But even with a beauty cupboard full of skincare products, expensive serums and moisturisers at my disposal, my actual skincare routine is pretty minimal. I've learned the hard way that introducing too many products only ends badly for my sensitive skin and acne-prone complexion. And every dermatologist and skin expert I've spoken to throughout my career has always sung the praises of a streamlined routine consisting of good skincare products. And guess what? As I mentioned, what makes this particular serum so special is that it uses retinaldehyde (or retinal for short), which works faster than retinol formulas to plump fine lines and wrinkles, decongest acne-prone complexions, as well as smooth skin texture and fade scarring or pigmentation.

The serum itself is lightweight and non-sticky, absorbing into the skin fast. You apply it after your nightly serums and/or moisturiser. If you're new to retinal (or any retinol or retinoid product), it's advisable to start with strengths 1 or 3 first, building up to applying it once or twice a week in your evening routine. As your skin adjusts, you can increase the frequency to each night, and after you've finished a tube, Medik8 advises you move up to the next strength if you've tolerated the formula well.

My Verdict

I’ve been using Medik8 Crystal Retinal for years (alongside the Medik8 Crystal Retinal Eye Cream, which is also a favourite of mine) and nearly every skin expert I speak to recommends it. I have sensitive skin, and it’s one of the few retinoid products I genuinely trust. What makes it stand out is that whether you’re an experienced retinal user or trying the ingredient for the first time, there are different strengths available to suit your skin. As your skin gradually adapts, you can move up to the next level, building on the skincare benefits as you move onto the next strength.

I started with strength 1 (the lowest, which is designed for sensitive skin and retinal beginners) a few years ago, and have now worked my way up to 6. Growing up with acne-prone skin meant that my makeup bag had to work just as hard as my skincare routine. While I now have my breakouts largely under control, a recent flare-up—the kind where several spots arrive all at once—sent me reaching back into an old familiar habit, green concealer.

When my acne was at its worst, green concealer was my safety net. It meant I didn’t have to pile on thick layers of full-coverage foundation to disguise redness—instead, I could neutralise it from the source via a technique known as colour correcting. As celebrity make-up artist Emma White Turle explains, “Colour correcting is where you use a complementary colour to correct your skin tones. It can neutralise and balance different tones to give you a more even appearance and hide any scars or marks.”

Understanding that principle of cancelling out redness changed everything, and rather than masking my skin, I learned to balance it. Revisiting it more recently, I was reminded that while good skincare is the long-term solution, knowing a few clever make-up techniques can be just as empowering.

Why would you use a green concealer?

Green concealer is designed to counteract redness in the skin. Because green sits opposite red on the colour wheel, it neutralises flushed or inflamed areas, making them appear more even before foundation is applied. As White Turle explains, “Green is the most used colour [for colour correcting] and is used to hide redness from spots and irritation. There are differing tones of red and hence differing greens, and so you have to experiment which shade of green works best on the redness you have. A basic guide is that if the red is purple-toned, such as with acne breakouts, then try a darker green. A light or minty green is better on broken capillaries or brighter reds like rosacea.”

In short, green concealer allows you to target redness at its source, meaning you can use less overall coverage and still achieve a balanced, natural-looking finish.

How do you use green concealer?

Application is everything when it comes to colour correction. The goal isn’t to see the green on your skin, it’s to let it subtly neutralise redness underneath your base. “When using a green corrector, or any colour corrector really, start on clean, hydrated skin," says White Turle. "I like to allow skincare to settle for fifteen minutes or so before I start applying makeup. It does depend on the texture of the product you are using, but go lightly, and sometimes a fluffy, small brush is useful for buffing the product over the skin."

Pat or lightly buff a small amount directly onto red areas, then follow with concealer or foundation as usual. "You want a light layer, as you can add more if you need to, but do start gently as you don’t want to be able to see the green; it should blend into the skin and neutralise the redness," she adds.

The Verdict

Having tested countless spot patches over the years, Hero Mighty Patch remains one of the very few I consistently repurchase. While many patches on the market technically “work,” very few deliver results this reliably, this quickly and while actually living up to their bold claims.

What sets Mighty Patch apart for me is how well it balances efficacy with wearability. The adhesion is excellent: once it’s on, it stays put through sleep, skincare, and even light makeup. That might sound minor, but a patch that lifts at the edges is essentially useless—it lets bacteria in and moisture out. Hero gets this part right with every single one of their patches.

In terms of results, I’ve repeatedly seen visible improvement within 24 hours. On inflamed, tender spots, the patches noticeably reduce swelling and soreness within a few hours. Once removed, the angry soreness is gone, and the spot is either flatter or has come to a head cleanly without spreading redness. As an esthetician, I get asked this question about skincare routines more often than you might think: “Can I pop this pimple?” And my answer, almost every time, is the same: no. Really. My professional stance is clear—squeezing breakouts is one of the fastest ways to make a minor skin nuisance turn into a long-term regret. When you pop a pimple, you risk pushing bacteria deeper into the skin, increasing inflammation, prolonging healing time, and, worst of all, leaving a permanent mark or scar. It’s like turning a one-day inconvenience into a one-year reminder. Plus, even if the pimple looks small and harmless on the surface, the damage underneath is often invisible, but very real.

With that said, I understand why so many people can’t resist. There’s an undeniable satisfaction in seeing a blemish finally release what’s inside. Many of my clients confess that the urge hits them at the worst possible moments—right before an important event or a night out. And while I would never recommend it as a frequent solution, I like to take a judgment-free, educated approach. If someone is going to pop a pimple anyway, it’s far safer to do it properly, minimising the risk of scarring, infection, or irritation as much as possible. My job is to provide a method that reduces these risks, helping clients navigate the temptation without compromising their skin health.

In this guide, I’ll walk you through the safest, most hygienic way to pop a pimple—step by step, and based on professional practices I use in my facials. From prepping the skin to aftercare, following these steps can significantly reduce complications. A Step-By-Step Guide to Popping Pimples

Step 1: Assess the Pimple

Before you reach for anything, take a close look at the pimple. Not all spots are created equal, and knowing whether it can safely be popped is critical. Whiteheads with a visible, soft tip are usually ready for gentle extraction, while red, inflamed pustules, cystic pimples, or nodules should never be squeezed. These deeper blemishes are highly prone to scarring and infection if manipulated. Look for swelling, tenderness and a clearly defined head. If it doesn’t feel ready, leave it alone and wait for a head to appear. Assessing the pimple first prevents unnecessary trauma and ensures that only blemishes likely to respond safely are addressed.

Step 2: Cleanse Thoroughly

Before you even consider touching a pimple, the first step is to cleanse both your hands and face meticulously. Wash your hands for at least 30 seconds with soap and warm water to remove oils, dirt and bacteria. Then, gently cleanse your face with a mild, non-comedogenic face wash to ensure the area around the pimple is clean and free from debris.

After cleansing, apply a warm compress to the pimple for 5–10 minutes. The warmth softens the skin and draws pus to the surface, making the pimple easier to extract. Skipping this step increases the risk of pushing bacteria deeper and causing inflammation.

Step 3: Sterilise Skin

Next, clean the pimple and surrounding skin with an alcohol pad or antiseptic solution. This step is crucial because introducing bacteria to an open pore can quickly lead to infection or a worsening breakout.

Step 4: Apply Gentle Pressure

Now comes the fun part. Using two clean cotton swabs, gently press around the pimple, starting from the sides rather than the top. The goal is to encourage the pus to come out naturally, without forcing it, so squeeze the skin around the spot, rather than the spot itself. Wipe any pus away using a clean cotton pad.

If the pimple doesn’t release easily (I have a strict three squeezes rule), stop immediately—forcing it can rupture surrounding tissue, increase inflammation, and even cause scarring. Patience is key here. Many people rush and press too hard, but slow, controlled pressure helps minimise damage and keeps the surrounding skin intact. You’re coaxing the pimple out, not fighting it.

Step 5: Aftercare

After the pimple has been drained, aftercare is crucial. Mist your face with a hypochlorous acid spray (such as Clinisoothe), then when dry, apply a gentle spot treatment containing antibacterial or anti-inflammatory ingredients, such as salicylic acid, benzoyl peroxide, or tea tree oil. These help prevent infection and calm redness. Avoid touching or picking at the area afterwards, as even slight irritation can prolong healing.

Cleanse your hands again and consider using a layer of soothing moisturiser to support barrier repair. Depending on your skin type, you may also want to apply a hydrocolloid patch overnight to protect the area and absorb any residual fluid. Proper aftercare ensures your skin recovers quickly and minimises scarring.

For pimples that feel sore and swollen but don’t have a visible head, icing can be a game-changer. Applying a wrapped ice cube directly to the blemish for one- to two-minute intervals helps reduce redness, swelling, and discomfort almost instantly. Ice constricts blood vessels, calming inflammation and making angry, cystic pimples look flatter and less noticeable. It won’t get rid of the spot overnight, but it can take down the heat and swelling that often make these types of breakouts painful. This method is especially helpful before an event, when you want the spot to appear less obvious without risking the damage that comes with squeezing.

4. A Warm Compress

Finally, simple warm compresses can work wonders, especially for pimples that are almost ready to come to a head. Applying gentle heat to a blemish for a few minutes increases blood flow and opens pores, encouraging natural drainage without physically touching it. Pairing this technique with a spot treatment or pimple patch can still deliver results without introducing bacteria or risking scarring.

This might be a hot take, but I'm not a fan of tretinoin. There, I said it. I had a bad experience with it while trying to clear up my acne-prone skin, and it hasn't been the same since. It's been a while since I stopped using it, but my skin barrier never really recovered, and the journey to figure out how to heal it has been long. While I've been fortunate enough to have access to the best aestheticians Hollywood has to offer, I'm especially thankful to have worked with celebrity aesthetician Renée Rouleau. Rouleau has been a guiding light for me and my damaged skin. She's extremely knowledgeable and trustworthy, and her list of celebrity clientele speaks for itself. She treats everyone from Sabrina Carpenter to Demi Lovato. She's also spent over 35 years as an aesthetician, so it's safe to say she's seen it all.

I came to her with an SOS. message about my extremely reactive, inflamed, and compromised skin. I asked her for advice on how to fix it and decided to share because I knew I wasn't the only one struggling with tretinoin damage. In fact, friends of mine who know I'm a beauty editor now come to me to ask if I have any experience with it.

Rouleau, true to her educator ways, was kind enough to help us all out. Not only that, but she also gave me a whole routine from her suite of incredible products that honestly changed my life. Why Tretinoin Isn't Always Great for Acne

According to Rouleau, it's easy to make the mistake of going overboard on tretinoin. Like any vitamin A derivative, it works by speeding up cellular turnover, so you may assume that it's good to use when dealing with acne. However, Rouleau says this isn't always the case. "If you're someone who's dealing with acne, your skin is very biologically active," she explains. "The analogy I like to use is acne-prone skin is going 100 miles per hour, and we're trying to get it to go 50 miles per hour." Basically, in layman's terms, if you're dealing with acne, your skin is already turning over really fast, and an increase in the shedding of dead skin cells means your pores can clog easier. Adding a retinoid to the mix may just increase the problem.

Tretinoin is more helpful for things like skin aging and sun spots. For lower-level breakouts and congestion, a gentler retinoid can definitely help more. Rouleau says that it can clear smaller clogged pores, blackheads, and overall congestion, but for irritated, red, and inflamed breakouts, it isn't as helpful.

I found that overusing tretinoin on my type of acne was the issue. When I used it, I had a dermatologist who prescribed it to me with instructions to apply it every night (yikes). It never actually cleared my skin—I would still break out while I was using it but was afraid that it would get worse if I stopped. If only Rouleau had been my aesthetician during this time… Sigh. Eventually, I did learn my lesson, but it left some damage in its wake. At that point, my moisture barrier was totally shot. Even though I stopped using tretinoin a while ago, I'm still in the recovery process. My next question for Rouleau was how to go about fixing the damage.

How to Correct Tretinoin Damage

For starters, if you're dealing with red and inflamed breakouts, it might be a good idea to stop using tretinoin. "Always listen to your skin," Rouleau shares. If you're still breaking out despite using a retinoid, it can't hurt to subtract it from the equation for a while to calm your breakouts. Rouleau also has a super-detailed blog post about what to do if your skin is dry, flaky, and damaged due to aggressive topical treatments. She even has a handy quiz on her website that helps you to pinpoint your exact skin type and the ingredients that will work best for you.

Rouleau says it's important to focus on calming, repairing, and soothing ingredients that are right for your specific skin type. As an example, my skin type on the Reneé Rouleau scale is skin type four, which is really sensitive, oily (or combination), and prone to some breakouts. From there, Rouleau helped me to build a barrier-repairing routine that would soothe, calm, and mend without causing new breakouts. The key to this is selecting the right moisturizer. Rouleau's Skin Recovery Lotion ($45) is a great option for those with acne because it's designed to improve barrier function for breakout-prone skin without using heavy oils or other pore-clogging ingredients.

More Complexion-Saving Products

Although I've been a beauty editor for years now, I still find that there's always more to learn about acne-prone skin. I've struggled with acne firsthand and, of course, that journey led me to want to learn everything I could about the way my specific skin type functions and how I can care for it without totally wrecking it. Recently, I had the privilege of getting an incredible facial with Eminence Organic Skin Care's international educator, Brian Goodwin, and I discovered something I didn't know, yet again.

After explaining to Goodwin my skin concerns (inflammation, congestion, and hyperpigmentation), he clued me in on something that isn't talked about as much when it comes to acne-prone skin. Goodwin told me that acne-prone folks are often low in an essential fatty acid called linoleic acid. If you're a skincare enthusiast like me, then you might already be familiar with both linoleic and oleic acid. Both are essential fatty acids, but linoleic is a polysaturated fat that can't be produced by the human body on its own, and it belongs to the omega-6 fatty acid family.

"While we at Eminence didn't conduct a study ourselves, there's some interesting research out there about this topic," Goodwin told me. "Studies like this one have found that people with acne-prone skin tend to have lower levels of linoleic acid in their sebum than those who don’t experience breakouts. Linoleic acid is an essential fatty acid that plays an important role in maintaining the follicular barrier and regulating sebum production. When linoleic acid is low, sebum can become thicker, which makes it more likely to clog pores and lead to breakouts. It also affects the skin’s barrier. Without enough linoleic acid, the barrier can become compromised, leading to more inflammation and irritation. So it’s really about how a lack of this one component can set off a cycle that contributes to acne."

There are so many different factors that go into acne, and everyone's skin is different, but this is something I never considered might be an issue for me. Goodwin then told me all about the brand's Recovery Facial Oil ($85), an incredible product that I've used to the last drop before and only stopped because I ran out.

Even if you don't necessarily want to use a dedicated facial oil, you can still choose skincare products that contain linoleic acid–rich vegetable oils like sunflower, grape-seed, or soybean. Goodwin also has a few suggestions. "Sesame and olive oil can be great options. They help deliver the fatty acids that acne-prone skin needs to support the skin barrier and reduce the likelihood of breakouts."

Goodwin even says you can supplement your diet with these types of oils. "On the dietary supplement side, omega-3s and gamma linoleic acid (GLA) have been found to help reduce inflammation, which is a big part of acne," he explains. "The body actually converts linoleic acid into GLA, so supplementing with GLA-rich oils can help address breakouts. Borage seed oil or evening primrose oil are both good options, and it’s just a matter of seeing which one your skin responds to best."

If you're struggling with inflammation and breakouts, adding linoleic acid–rich products to the mix can definitely help, but Goodwin has some other advice. For starters, the number one mistake he sees those with acne making is over exfoliating." It's easy to fall into the habit of using too many clinical-level actives like glycolic acid, mandelic acid, and retinol all at the same time," he said. "But using a lot of actives can compromise the skin’s barrier and disrupt the microbiome. When that happens, the skin struggles to manage inflammation and protect itself from irritants, which can make acne worse. If someone is in that situation, I always suggest starting with a professional skin analysis and consultation. A licensed aesthetician or certified dermatologist can help figure out what [your] skin needs and create a routine that's more personalized."

Generally speaking, if your skin is stuck in a constant state of breakouts and inflammation, Goodwin also recommends doing an active-ingredient reset. I've personally done this before when my skin was acting up, and it worked wonders. "This means taking a break from exfoliating acids and retinols for an extended period of time (one to three months) depending on the extent of barrier repair needed," he shared. "During that time, I suggest keeping your routine simple with a gentle cleanser and moisturizer. Once you start to see an improvement, you can gradually introduce more supportive ingredients. Facial oils rich in linoleic acid like Facial Recovery Oil can be a great next step. You can also look into internal support, like borage seed oil supplements to continue managing acne and inflammation."

More Linoleic Acid–Rich Skincare

As a beauty editor with years of experience, I've tried a good majority of the skincare brands on the market. Like most who have struggled with acne at any point in their life, I had a really hard time finding the right products that worked for me and didn't make things worse. The thing about inflammatory acne (that I've learned through years of trial and error) is that most of the time, it becomes even more irritated by strong retinoids and exfoliants—the things we're often told will clear it. After years of using the wrong treatments, I finally realized that my barrier-damaged skin just wasn't going to get better if I kept going the typical "clearing" route.

Luckily, I recently had the privilege of getting a facial with holistic aesthetician Sonia Vargas who didn't sugarcoat it for me. She finally told me my super active routine was not going to get the job done for my skin. In fact, it was probably making my irritation and inflammation worse. "My typical treatment [for acne] is to use gentle, calming products throughout the session with any sensitized skin or active acne present," she told me. "I work on the nervous system and focus on the lymphatic system as well through different modalities. Most acne sufferers need lots of stimulation of the lymph in order to gently move waste in the tissues. Also, addressing the nervous system is one thing most acne treatments never focus on. This is such an over looked aspect when working with stressed skin."

Honestly, I left Vargas's L.A. studio glowing and it was one of the best facials I've ever had. Vargas uses the best holistic modalities including tuning forks to help reset the energy of your skin. She also recommends a network of alternative doctors, naturopaths, cranial sacral therapists, body workers, and kinesiologists to her clients to treat the source of the issue and not just the skin topically. "It takes a network of practitioners to uncover the root cause of acne and inflammation," she says. "[You] needed calming for your skin not more stimulation. Your skin was a bit reactive, irritated, and a little inflamed."

While it's good to treat the body as a whole, Vargas also recommended a suite of products she has gotten great results with on her acne-prone clients. I've been using her picks for close to a month now and I can already see a positive difference in my skin. Ahead, I'm sharing the whole routine as a PSA for my fellow acne-prone folks who have experienced similar skin frustrations.

When scrolling through social media, I've noticed that there’s no shortage of skincare trends. From slugging to skin cycling, there’s always something new to try. Use a high concentration of an active ingredient, reach for the wrong product, or even just rub your skin a little too hard, and you'll see redness and irritation pop up in large, unsightly patches. From there, it often takes the skin a few days (if not longer) to return to baseline. In the meantime, I either have to deal with it or cover it with foundation and concealer. Either way, it's unfortunate.

That's why I consider myself an expert on soothing skincare ingredients. I want to prevent redness and irritation from ever appearing and soothe it if it does come up. My MVPs include heartleaf, hypochlorous acid, ectoin, and exosomes. Lately, I've been seeing another soothing ingredient listed on the back of my products (namely Korean ones), and I wanted to know more. I reached out to two top dermatologists, and they said it can soothe, hydrate, and prevent irritation. Ahead, learn everything there is to know about this trendy ingredient called madecassoside. (I know—it's a mouthful.)

What is madecassoside?

According to Geeta Yadav, MD, a board-certified dermatologist and founder of Facet Dermatology, "madecassoside is a compound known as a terpene found in the centella asiatica plant." The centella asiatica plant is also known as cica, gotu kola, and tiger grass. It's a skincare ingredient renowned for its soothing and reparative benefits, which explains why it's found in so many products formulated specifically for sensitive skin. Centella asiatica gets all the credit, but Yadav says, "Madecassoside is responsible for many of the benefits associated with centella asiatica."

Noah Gratch, MD, a board-certified dermatologist at MDCS Dermatology, agrees, adding that it's the primary active ingredient and bioactive compound in centella asiatica.

It's worth noting that this ingredient is found in many Korean skincare products and less so in American ones. When I asked the dermatologists why that is, they had some theories. "Korean skincare often includes gentle, anti-inflammatory ingredients, such as madecassoside, that are known to help repair the skin barrier," Gratch says. "While centella asiatica is widely used in the States, this compound alone has yet to be recognized much."

Yadav has a similar take. "I think there is a focus on active skincare in products in the U.S. that prioritizes changing the skin, while K-beauty has an emphasis on supporting the skin's health, beauty, and function," she says. "Centella asiatica has increased in popularity in recent years stateside, so I would expect that madecassoside isn't too far behind."

How does it benefit the skin?

Madecassoside offers some serious skin benefits, specifically for sensitive and acne-prone skin. "Madecassoside is beneficial to all skin types, but especially skin that is sensitive or has a compromised skin barrier," Yadav says. "Its greatest benefit is its anti-inflammatory properties—madecassoside helps quell inflammation as well as redness, which makes it great for irritated, sensitive skin as well as skin prone to developing painful, swollen blemishes." It also functions as an antioxidant, meaning it helps "to defend the skin from free radical damage that can accelerate skin aging," Yadav adds.

As if that's not enough, it's also hydrating. "Studies show that it helps to both hydrate and moisturize the skin while working to prevent transepidermal water loss," Yadav says. Translation? It keeps moisture in the skin—right where it should be.

Last but certainly not least, madecassoside has a regenerative effect on the skin. "Finally, it also has wound-healing benefits, with studies showing that it can stimulate collagen production," Yadav says. How's that for a do-it-all ingredient?

To sum it up, here are all the benefits of madecassoside, according to Gratch:

• Anti-Inflammatory: "Madecassoside reduces the production of pro-inflammatory cytokines, which can help reduce redness and irritation of the skin."
• Antioxidant: "It works like a shield to protect your cells. Madecassoside neutralizes free radicals (which damage and age the skin)."
• Hydration + Wound Healing + Collagen Production: "It helps boost collagen production, neutralizes free radicals, and reduces inflammation, all of which contribute to hydration and anti-aging."

Is there anyone who should avoid it?

Both dermatologists say madecassoside can be beneficial for all skin types, including acne-prone skin. Since it's noncomedogenic, you don't have to worry about it contributing to the formation of new acne. "Madecassoside is extremely beneficial to those with inflammatory skin conditions, including acne," Yadav says. "Madecassoside is proven to inhibit the inflammation caused by acne, making it a helpful ingredient to have on deck for treating breakouts. … Centella asiatica has been shown to also be helpful in the treatment of eczema or atopic dermatitis due to its anti-inflammatory effects."

Still, it's better to be safe than sorry, which is why Gratch recommends performing a patch test. "Whenever you try out a new product/ingredient, it's always smart to patch-test first to ensure there's no irritation," he says. "Always consult with your dermatologist before trying something new." Still, he says, "It's generally well-tolerated by most skin types."

It might go without saying, but Yadav cautions against using madecassoside if you have a known allergy to centella asiatica. "Centella asiatica and its derivatives are generally well-tolerated, but allergies are possible in rare cases," she says. "Anyone with an allergy to centella asiatica should avoid madecassoside or other centella asiatica–derived compounds."

The Best Madecassoside Products

Sometimes, it really is the simple things in life. For years, I thought that my acne would only clear up if I used multiple serums to correct various issues and curated a maximalist-style routine, but celebrity aesthetician Sofie Pavitt set me straight. Pavitt is known as NYC's "acne whisperer" for a reason. She's able to clear up even the most stubborn acne at the drop of a hat, and her advice on how to do it is refreshingly simple. "The fact of the matter is that clients first come to me using way too many products in their routine," she says. "I love to pare it back when first working with someone on clearing their skin to cleanse, treat, and hydrate. Pavitt shared a simple routine for me to follow that I'm sharing below, plus the latest launch in her eponymous skincare line that boosts your results.

The Biggest Mistakes People With Acne Often Make

I didn't realize how badly I was contributing to my own problem until Pavitt told me a few key mistakes those of us with acne often make. For starters? Using retinoids. That may seem ridiculous to anyone who has been told otherwise for years (me being one of them), but Pavitt informed me that my inflamed, sensitive skin would calm down if I stopped using them. She said, "[The biggest mistake I see is] using tretinoin or retinol products on inflammatory acne," she explains. "Retinols increase cell turnover, and people with acne generally have faster cell turnover than others who aren't predisposed to acne. I get the best results when I take clients off retinols (especially tret, which is super strong and irritating), get them clear with Mandelic Clearing Serum and benzoyl peroxides, then slowly reintroduce a retinol to maintain alongside their low and slow daily exfoliation."

As someone who used tretinoin on inflammatory acne for five years before quitting it cold turkey, I can definitely back her up on that. My skin hasn't been the same since, and it's been a long road to recovery. Now that I've quit retinoids altogether like Pavitt suggested during a facial, my skin has calmed down massively. I didn't realize it, but ironically enough, the strong retinoid I was using was actually making my skin more inflamed, sensitive, and prone to acne. But don't worry—Pavitt gave me the routine to follow instead.

How to Clear Your Acne in 3 Easy Steps

Everyone's skin is different, and you may want to start slowly when trying this routine out, as exfoliants and benzoyl peroxide can be irritating for those who have super-sensitive skin. I went a little too hard on it at first, and it didn't go well, so consider this a PSA for anyone with similar struggles. That being said, Pavitt shared the boring yet easy and effective routine she likes to put her clients on when clearing acne.

First, in the morning, you start with a hydrating cleanser that doesn't strip the skin. Second, you treat with a low-grade exfoliating serum, like Pavitt's Mandelic Clearing Serum ($54) that provides irritation-free exfoliation. Lastly, you hydrate with a noncomedogenic moisture—that's it! At night, you'll essentially follow the same routine, but instead of exfoliating, you'll opt for some type of benzoyl peroxide treatment on the areas you're congested. Be careful with this step, as this is where I inevitably went wrong (lol). My skin normally hates benzoyl peroxide, and I only use it to spot-treat, so if you have similar skin, use it sparingly and start application at a couple times a week before gradually increasing if your skin can tolerate it.

Pavitt says to keep it super boring while clearing up your skin—it's the best way to get results. In addition to these three steps, you can opt for Pavitt's newest launch, Fridge to Face Mist ($38). There's a new high-tech way to deal with your acne that doesn't involve creams thanks to Ziip Beauty founder Melanie Simon. Naturally, as someone who's acne-prone and a huge fan of Simon's, I knew I had to try her latest pocket-size zit-zapping device (aptly named the Dot for its circular shape). Simon is a pioneer in her field as an electrical aesthetician. If there's a skin issue out there, you can almost guarantee that she's created an electrical waveform to help correct it. My Review of the Ziip Dot

I'm used to using Halo's Problem Solver frequency, but I should note here that when you run the device over any active blemishes, you may feel a pinch or a zap. Although it's a tad uncomfortable, you know that means it's working. Upon opening the device, I immediately loved how small and easy to use it was. All you have to do is put on your gel (that comes with the device), hit the power button, and start running it all over your skin or any problem areas, and the device turns off by itself after a quick treatment.

Because I've used Problem Solver before, I noticed that after using the device a few times, I didn't really feel any zapping or tingling, meaning there was nothing brewing under the surface of my skin, which was a huge win for me. While you don't have to use the device over your entire face, you can if you have super acne-prone skin and want to get ahead of any potential cycle-related breakouts or future breakouts in general. I found that Dot works extremely well for this. Simon also recommends that you thoroughly cleanse your skin after a treatment to remove any residual bacteria on the skin that was pulled up out of your pores by the treatment. As long as I did this, I found that it curbed any potential purging that could occur after a treatment.

I'll be honest; while the beauty editor in me can be a maximalist, I've been trying to streamline my beauty routine and will tell you that if you already have a Halo device or are considering getting one, I would stick with that. Dot is fantastic for folks who only want to focus on clearing their acne and are on a bit more of a budget, but Halo gives you more bang for your buck IMO. I'm obsessed with Halo because it offers so many different treatments (including Problem Solver) that target acne, uneven tone, aging, and more. Both of these devices are fantastic, though, and Dot really works for breakouts, as you can see in my below photo I took after two weeks of using this. I do struggle with post-inflammatory hyperpigmentation, but you can see that my breakouts have been reduced significantly.

Overall, Ziip devices are absolutely worth investing in, and I'll always have nothing but the best things to say about Simon and her work. My skin wouldn't be where it is today without the help of her fantastic devices, and this new addition to the lineup is a powerful tool to add to the mix if you struggle with breakouts.

More Acne-Clearing Products I Love

Take it from someone who knows: Acne is a tricky, tricky thing. It can be a journey to pinpoint exactly what's causing your breakouts, but as of late, there's more of a conversation around underlying factors that could lead to them besides hormones. By now, you may have heard of the gut-skin axis, the direct connection our skin shares with the health of our digestive system. According to naturopathic doctor Bryant Esquejo, ND, "scientists have found that what happens in the gut is linked to skin issues like acne, eczema, rosacea, and more. Regarding acne, [they've] found that acne is linked to several gut issues, like irritable bowel syndrome (IBS), peptic ulcers, constipation, and more."

That definitely frames your breakouts in a different light, doesn't it? On my own acne journey, I realized that my breakouts weren't really caused by products and hormones. They're linked to the somewhat elusive gut-skin axis like Esquejo suggests. Going with this line of thinking, it's easy to see why using probiotic supplements to encourage skin clarity has emerged as a trend in the past few years. Can certain probiotic strains actually clear up your breakouts then? I picked Esquejo's brain for his expert insight on the topic. For everything he shared, keep reading.

The Link Between Skin Conditions and Gut Health

Interestingly enough, Esquejo says that gut imbalances aren't just linked to acne. In recent years, scientists have found certain gut issues to be linked to other skin conditions like eczema and rosacea. It's all connected—he even says things like your, ahem, level of regularity could be telling you something important.

Esquejo says, "Scientists found that people with acne are more likely to have fewer beneficial gut bacteria compared to people without acne. Researchers in 2020 also found that acne is linked to a stomach bacteria called helicobacter pylori, and interestingly, what we know about these gut-microbiome findings is that some of them may play a role in the gut issues listed [earlier]."

As for eczema, scientists found in 2021 that it's linked to other gut issues like constipation. According to the study, "constipated people had a 2.31-fold greater risk of [eczema] compared with those without constipation." Esquejo also notes that data from a 2014 study about gut bacteria and eczema showed that lower gut bacteria diversity is inversely linked to eczema severity. Rosacea, on the other hand, has also been linked to small intestinal bacterial overgrowth.

I'd heard from other wellness experts that gut-microbiome diversity is key to maintaining a healthy digestive system, but apparently, according to the above research, that means it's also key in maintaining skin health. As more research about this comes out, it will be interesting to see if more probiotic therapy is released to specifically target acne.

Can the right probiotic actually solve your skin struggles?

As I mentioned above, I struggled to pinpoint what the source of my acne was. That was until I found the right probiotic for me. Trust me—that took a lot of trial and error. There are so many different strains of probiotics out there that it's tough to know which strain is the right one for your particular gut and skin issues. It isn't impossible to find the right one on your own, but it is easier if you consult a naturopathy professional like Esquejo, a gastroenterologist, or a functional-medicine expert to help you determine whether gut issues are causing your breakouts.

The probiotic that got me on the right track (along with the right skincare) was Microbiome Labs' MegaSporeBiotic ($59). I noticed an improvement in my skin after three months. I had such a positive experience that I had to ask Esquejo if he thinks probiotics could be a tangible solution for acne, but he said to slow my roll—there are mixed opinions and studies when it comes to this topic.

"When reviewing the body of research, studies on probiotics and acne are varied," Esquejo says. "A 2019 review showed that different probiotic strains are used across studies, with some strains promoting the skin. Due to this variability in research and the wide-ranging claims made by different companies, I recognize that it can be incredibly confusing for many who are navigating probiotics on their own. While researchers found that some probiotic strains could be supportive, I've also heard from many individuals who've tried probiotics for their skin and said they didn't notice any improvement. Why is that? As mentioned earlier, acne is linked to fewer beneficial bacteria, but it's also linked to H. pylori in the stomach. While probiotics may replenish beneficial bacteria, it's often unclear which specific strains are depleted, making it hard for most to know which probiotic to take. Not knowing what strains are depleted may explain why some people report seeing no improvement when taking a general probiotic. Additionally, probiotics alone aren't enough to address issues like H. pylori, which typically needs heavier-duty approaches."

While the gut-skin axis can play a major role in the health of your skin, Esquejo says not to discount other factors like blood sugar and hormones. He also shares that a holistic approach to healing acne should always start with a comprehensive intake with a medical provider—that's the best way to discern what exact factors could be behind your acne.

How to Support the Gut-Skin Axis

That being said, Esquejo's key advice is to keep up with what's going on with your gut microbiome. "Lab testing provides insights that help identify personalized solutions for someone's gut-skin axis," he explains. "With that information, people can determine whether a probiotic is appropriate or if another approach is needed. There are many gut-microbiome tests nowadays, such as with conventional testing and functional tests, which can all be overwhelming for people. Because of the different options, I feel that it's important that people consult their medical provider to explore which testing options are best suited to their individual needs."

Another factor I had to look at was my diet. I thought I was eating "healthy" by getting a meal delivery service, only to realize that those meals were loaded with more refined sugar and heavy carbs than what I was eating previously. Esquejo actually says that researchers suggest the Western diet may impact both acne and the gut microbiome. "The Western diet is generally described as a diet that is high in ultra-processed products, fat, sugar, and refined grains and low in fiber, fruits, and vegetables," he says. "In a systematic review published in JAAD International, researchers concluded that certain elements of the Western diet, like high-glycemic foods and dairy, are pro-acnegenic. Other foods like dairy may trigger hormone responses that underpin acne. Additionally, a 2018 study found that people with acne have gut-microbiome imbalances that closely resemble those seen in people who follow a Western diet, which is marked by a reduction in beneficial gut bacteria."

Obviously, this is a lot to digest (no pun intended), but it's definitely something to think about if you've found that every topical acne treatment under the sun doesn't work for you. I now follow the Mediterranean diet, a plant-based diet that includes a lot of fruits, vegetables, whole grains, and nuts. It isn't always easy to change your lifestyle, but doing so can make huge positive changes in your skin. Esquejo suggests other foundational gut support like increasing dietary fiber, eating 30 or more different edible plants per week (fruits, vegetables, whole grains, nuts, and seeds), and increasing dietary prebiotics.

Probiotics and Other Products That Can Support Skin Health

Sometimes, changing your diet isn't enough, and that's when Esquejo suggests probiotics and other support to his patients. "It should be noted that there are instances when these foundational approaches are not enough to address the gut-skin axis, which is another reason why lab testing is crucial," he says. "While they help build a steady foundation, these foundational approaches are realistically not enough for some gut issues, like H. pylori. Once lab results are received, there are several approaches that can be added on top of foundational gut support to target specific imbalances detected in those labs.

"Ultimately, I aim to empower my patients with education about standard medical treatments and natural alternatives so that they can have the full picture and can make the best decision for their health. Given all of that, it should be noted that it's important that people struggling with acne should consult their doctor before starting anything new to learn what's safe and worthwhile for their acne and their personal health and wellness. Regarding the gut-skin axis, there are many supplements I have suggested to my patients that address gut-microbiome imbalances detected in lab testing. Based on lab results, I may suggest supplements such as targeted probiotic strains, prebiotics, specific herbal extracts, or other supportive options tailored to my patient's individual needs."

I've struggled with skin that's reactive and prone to breakouts for years. When I was a teenager, I tried everything from tretinoin to Accutane to clear it up with no luck. My Experience Using SIV

SIV immediately appealed to me as someone who has used plenty of harsh creams and drying acne solutions. After using tretinoin for so many years and damaging my barrier, I realized that it probably damaged my microbiome too. I decided to give this a go because my aesthetician Varuni Palacios suggested it. I was skeptical at first because, like I mentioned, I'd tried probiotic serums before in the past and didn't have much luck. Some probiotic serums also don't play nicely with other ingredients, which made it challenging to incorporate one into my routine. That's not the case with SIV. SIV's serum is designed to fit perfectly into your routine—other ingredients won't decrease the effectiveness of the bacillus spores.

The above photo is what my skin looked like before starting SIV. I was initially worried about purging, but I didn't experience anything nearly as bad as I did when I first tried a probiotic serum. The only purging I experienced was old texture coming to the surface. My skin is super sensitive and reacts when old texture starts to resurface, but SIV has really mitigated that in a big way. I'm talking the kind of cystic acne and spots that take so long to heal that another soon pops up in its place—no matter how good my acne products were. After countless GP appointments, lots of tweaks to my skincare routine, multiple rounds of antibiotics and (finally) a referral to an NHS dermatologist, I was eventually prescribed spironolactone as part of my acne treatment, which worked wonders.

However, while the spots have subsided, I've been left with acne scarring, enlarged pores and uneven, rough skin texture around my chin. So, this lead me to seeking the best clinical treatments for acne scarring throughout the past five years.

Thankfully, most of my acne scarring is minimal and contained to my chin and a little on my cheeks. However, as someone who experienced acne and eczema all throughout my twenties, I'm fully aware of the toll that skin issues and concerns can take on our mental health and wellbeing. And even after acne has come and gone, dealing with the scars afterward can affect your confidence, and can be annoying and difficult to treat.

I'm lucky that my job as a beauty journalist allows me to try some of the best in-clinic treatments and skincare around, so I'm keen to share the acne scarring treatments that genuinely worked for me, from in-clinic treatments to at-home skincare.

What Is Acne Scarring?

Acne scarring can take form in pigment changes (such as hyperpigmentation, or darkening of the skin) or as textural changes. There are different kinds of scarring, which present differently on the skin. Below, Dr Ahmed El Muntasar, GP and award-winning aesthetician details the different kinds of scarring.

Atrophic Scars: "These are a type of scar that causes indentation or depression in the skin. It's usually due to loss of collagen during the healing process of that specific scar," he says.

Hypertrophic Scars: "These are the opposite," says Dr El Muntasar. "So it's when there's too much collagen in the area, and actually the skin starts to stick out more."

Box Scars: "These are a type of atrophic scar that have well defined edges," says Dr El Muntasar. "They're rectangular, generally, and there's an element of previous severe inflammation in the acne that causes it."

Ice Pick Scars: "These are deep, narrow indentations in the dermis, specifically. And again, it's usually caused by severe acne," he says.

Rolling Scars: "These are atrophic scars with wavy, uneven textures. Usually there's fibrous bands in them that pull the scar inwards," says Dr El Muntasar.

Keloid Scars: "These are thick, raised scars that go beyond the margins of the original lesion. They're usually caused by overproduction of collagen during the healing process," he says.

What Causes Acne Scarring?

"Acne scarring is usually caused by inflammation," explains Dr El Muntasar. "When there's inflammatory damage to the skin because of the acne, this triggers an abnormal healing response, leading to either loss of collagen or excessive production of collagen. When it's lost, it's atrophic, so depressed. When it's excess, it causes hypertrophic or keloid scarring."

What Are the Best Treatments for Acne Scars?

Dr El Muntasar says that the best type of treatments for scarring are generally microneedling, chemical peels, laser resurfacing and fractional CO2 lasers or subscision. "You can also use steroid injections for hypertrophic scars as well as dermal fillers," he says.

What Skincare Can Help Treat Acne Scarring?

While in-clinic treatments can help hugely with acne scarring, a good at-home skincare routine shouldn't be overlooked. Certain skincare ingredients can help improve acne scarring and help bolster the results in-clinic treatments you're having. "For at home treatments, you can use things like exfoliating acids such as AHAs (alpha-hydroxy acids, such as glycolic acid) or BHAs (beta-hydroxy acids, such as salicylic acid), niacinamide, vitamin C, retinoids (retinol, retinal or tretinoin) and sunscreen," says Dr El Muntasar. "All these things are very important to maintain," he says.

How To Prevent Acne Scarring

"The best thing when it comes to prevention of acne scarring is treating the acne as early as possible to reduce the risks of inflammation," says Dr El Muntasar. Yes, this also means avoiding picking and squeezing. While tempting in the moment, picking and squeezing out spots can scar the skin. "Using skincare products that are tailored to the acne based on the severity [of acne] and that are made to promote healing are ideal also," he says. He also recommends using SPF every single day to shield your skin—not just during the summer or when it's sunny. UV rays can cause skin damage even on cloudy days, so be diligent with your application.

What Should Be Discussed In A Consultation For an Acne Scarring Treatment?

If you're considering an acne scarring treatment—or any cosmetic treatment, for that matter— it's important to find a practitioner and clinic that are adequately trained and qualified to treat you. Plus, there are some key factors you'll want to discuss in your initial treatment consultation.

"During a consultation during acne scarring treatment, they should be making sure that there has been a thorough [assessment of] your medical history, thorough examination and assessment of the skin and discussion of treatment options," says Dr El Muntasar. "This could include things like topical or oral, systemic treatments. It is also important to make sure the patient understands kind of realistic expectations of outcomes and any post-treatment care."

While acne scarring treatments can help greatly, depending on the severity of your acne scarring you may require a course of treatments, so cost is important to factor in here too. Some acne scarring treatments, such as microneedling and CO2 laser, also come with a downtime period and strict post-procedure protocols, so you also want to ensure you have the time to commit to healing afterwards. It's also important that your practitioner talks you through any risks associated with the treatment.

Are Acne Scarring Treatments Suitable For All Skin Tones?

The suitability of the treatment should be a key factor discussed during your consultation. While some treatments are suitable for a range of skin tones, some should be avoided if you have a darker complexion. For darker skin tones, Dr El Muntasar recommends microneedling, subscision, chemical peels, dermal fillers, collagen stimulants and non-ablative lasers. "Unsuitable treatments are aggressive lasers, ablative CO2 lasers, erbium lasers and really deep chemical peels," he says.

Best Treatments For Acne Scarring, Tried & Tested

1. CO2 Laser

CO2 laser is most recent treatment I've tried, and one I wish had investigated sooner when considering acne scarring treatments. For my treatment I visited Dr Liam Piggott, doctor, dental surgeon and CO2 laser expert at Grand Aesthetics clinic.

What is CO2 Laser?

CO2 laser is a type of ablative laser procedure that helps to produce the formation collagen, making it a great treatment for addressing uneven skin texture and scarring, include acne scarring.

"CO2 laser can potentially work very well for acne scaring, considered a 'gold standard' treatment," says Dr Piggott. "It is often something patients try at the end of a journey where they have tried other treatments first for acne scaring that haven't worked, but there is a strong argument that for severe scaring it should be considered the first treatment to try, rather than the last," he says.

"The Lumenis AcuPulse can be used on a 'fractional' setting, where it delivers precise small beams of laser in a grid, leaving columns of untreated tissue between. This assists healing and skin regeneration," he says.

How to Prepare for a CO2 Laser Treatment

"It is important patients discontinue potentially irritant skin products like retinoid, salicylic acid and glycolic acid a week before treatment, and avoid sun exposure or tanning in this period as well," says Dr Piggott.

It's better to plan your laser treatments during the autumn and winter months, as you'll need to be very careful to avoid sun exposure while your skin is healing during the downtime and in the weeks after your treatment. So, consider if you'll be travelling abroad anytime soon before having this treatment done and opt to start your treatment in the autumn or winter.

You'll also want to have an in-depth consultation ahead of your treatment, as well as a patch test to ensure its suitable for you. "During the consultation, we identify the patient's main concerns, their understanding of treatments, what they would like to achieve," says Dr Piggott. I also briefly explore the psychological impact on the patient's wellbeing, he says. "We assess medical history, medications, allergies, lifestyle and social history, including if they smoke, their occupation, their sun exposure, upcoming travel," he says. It's also important to tell your practitioner if you think you may be pregnant, as CO2 laser will not be suitable.

"If the patient wishes to proceed, I then discuss costs and that many laser treatments may require two or three rounds of treatment to achieve the optimum result," he says. "Patients typically have the best result after about three months, due to the regeneration of the skin including collagen production."

What To Expect During a CO2 Laser Treatment

Before the treatment begins, the skin is cleansed, and anaesthetic cream applied for 30 minutes to help reduce discomfort during the treatment (it can be a a little stingy) and the skin is cleansed again cleansed again. You'll wear eye shields during the treatment.

Thanks to the numbing cream, I wouldn't say the treatment is very painful, but it can be a little prickly in places as the laser heats the skin. It feels like a zapping sensation, and you can feel the laser creating little dots as it treats the skin.

The treatment time will depend on the size of the area being treated, but it's recommended that you book out a couple of hours to have your treatment done to allow time for the numbing cream to take effect, to have the treatment done and for the skin to cool down afterwards. "After the treatment, a gauze and cold saline is then applied for 20-30mins, then an application of the Aquaphor. "

How Long Is the Downtime?

"Most patients will heal significantly within the first week, and then be largely completely healed by 14 days," says Dr Piggott. "The skin will become re-epithelialised by the end of this period, and then patients can usually commence their usual skincare and makeup."

You may also be required to take medication after the treatment. "Depending on the size and location treated, the patient may be given an anti-microbial prescription, to start on the day of treatment," says Dr Piggott. This is to prevent infections as your skin heals.

You'll also want to follow the skincare aftercare from your practitioner, which involves using a gentle cleanser such as Cetaphil Gentle Cleanser (£11.50), following with a moisturiser (I was was recommended CeraVe Moisturising Lotion (£16.50) and avoiding makeup until the skin has fully healed. Of course, you'll want to avoid the sun and apply a good SPF too, such as La Roche-Posay Anthelios UVMune 400 Invisible Fluid SPF 50 (£20), and I was also recommended to apply Aquaphor (£13.50) generously to create a protective barrier as the skin heals.

I'd also recommend finding space in your diary while your skin recovers. My skin was very red in the first four days after my treatment and I could also see the grid markings from the laser. However, this significantly lessened by days 5-7. The following week, my skin looked pink, and after the two week mark, my skin looked back to normal and I started noticing the beginnings of my results.

CO2 Laser Results

It takes up to three months to see the full effects from a CO2 laser treatment. I'm currently just over two months in after my first treatment now, but I've already seen a great improvement in my skin texture, especially on my chin. The skin texture looks smoother and less bumpy. Dr Piggott tells me that depending on the patient, two or three treatments may be required for the best results.

CO2 Laser Cost

Costs for CO2 laser treatments will varying depending on your location, the clinic and how many treatments you will need. "A typically price range would start at £500 for a localised area or scar, through to £2000 or more for advanced, full facial resurfacing," says Dr Piggott. "An estimate of price can more accurately be given as part of the initial consultation, and how many rounds of treatment a patient may require.:

Risks of CO2 Laser

"CO2 is generally considered a safe treatment, but it is important to select the right treatment, for the right patient, at the right time," says Dr Piggott. "A full assessment of the patients concerns, requirements, medical history are essential. We should also do a patch test on a small area to ensure the patient does not have an adverse reaction, prior to their full treatment."

Risks of CO2 laser include a recovery time of up to two weeks, pain, skin infections and the need for further rounds of treatment. "Most patients typically benefit from two or three treatments to achieve the optimum, long-lasting result," he says.

2. Radiofrequency Microneedling

What Is Radiofrequnecy Microneedling?

Often refered to as RF mircroneedling, radiofrequency microneedling is a great treatment for scarring. "Combining two clinically proven technologies—radiofrequency and microneedling—that work synergistically, the RF microneedling treatment offers dramatic skin-boosting results," says Debbie Thomas, skincare expert and founder of D.Thomas Clinic.. "RF microneedling is a versatile treatment, effective for age management, healthy skin promotion, overall textural improvements, scar reduction and acne reduction."

It works by inflicting controlled trauma and energy itto the skin, which helps to kickstart collagen production and remodel uneven skin texture. "Microneedling is really good for refining the skin, helping to even skin texture, while the radio frequency creates heat to tighten and stimulate collagen," she says. "So, the two together help to improve the overall appearance of the skin."

How to Prepare for a Radiofrequnecy Microneedling Treatment

I was advised to undergo a series of three treatments, each spaced four weeks apart, to get the best results for my specific concerns. The number of treatments you’ll need depends on the severity of your issues.

It’s recommended to avoid sun exposure before your treatment, which makes autumn and winter the perfect times to start, much like laser treatments. That said, I had just returned from a sunny holiday a week before my first session, so my therapist used insulated needles to make the treatment gentler on sun-exposed skin. These insulated needles are also better for darker skin tones, and your therapist will assess your skin tone to choose the right needle depth for optimal results.

Depending on the clinic you may need to apply numbing cream yourself before your microneedling session, but in other places, your practitioner may apply it. At D.Thomas Clinic, for example, I had to bring my own numbing cream, which I applied 40 minutes before my treatment. However, for my first session, I actually skipped the numbing cream. It was mostly tolerable, but I would definitely recommend using it for a more comfortable experience, especially if you're sensitive to pain.

What to Expect During a Radiofrequency Microneedling Treatment

I'll be honest, I found this to be one of the more painful treatments I've tried—I'd give it a 8/10 on the pain scale. Although the numbing cream definitely helped, the needles can feel pinchy, especially around more sensitive areas such as the eyes and lips. That being said, you do get used to it. My therapist treated both my face and neck, and she went over the areas of concern two or three times to make sure the treatment was thorough. After the treatment, my therapist applied SPF and I was required to not use any makeup for 24 hours after each treatment.

How Long Is the Downtime?

After my treatment, I was very red and my skin felt warm, but my therapist reassured me that this was a normal and positive response to the treatment. It felt a bit like having a mild sunburn, and I stayed red for about an hour afterward (cue me rushing out of the clinic wearing oversized sunnies to catch the next tube). The redness faded after a couple of hours, and I looked a lot less flushed by then. In the following days, by skin had a couple of scabs as it healed, but nothing drastic.

Radiofrequency Microneedling Results

Based on the results I've seen so far, I highly recommend this treatment for anyone looking to improve skin texture, address pigmentation or acne scarring, or just give their skin an overall refresh. I felt like my overall complexion looked far plumper.

While the treatment can be a bit uncomfortable and requires some downtime, I truly believe the results are worth it. Having had a microneedling treatment alone in the past, I can say that the addition of radiofrequency has definitely enhanced the rsults Because of that, I'm definitely considering booking more sessions in the future to maintain the results.

It's now been over two years since my treatment, and I’m still seeing the benefits, but I’d definitely be open to another round to further improve my acne scarring.

Radiofrequency Microneedling Cost

Treatment cost will vary from clinic to clinic, however, treatment at D.Thomas Clinic starts at £395 for a single treatment, or £1067 for a course of three.

Risks of Radiofrequency Microneedling

The most common side effects are temporary and include redness, swelling and discomfort. More serious risks include infection, scarring and hyperpigmentation. It's important to ensure you have a consultation prior to your treatment to find out if the treatment is suitable for you.

3. Tretinoin

One treatment that has also supported an improvement in my acne scarring is tretinoin. It's a prescription ingredient, so you'll need to access it via a dermatologist or a skincare prescription platform such as Klira, Skin + Me and Dermatica. These services allow you to be assessed by dermatologists online before a custom treatment will be sent out to you in the post.

What Is Tretinoin?

"Tretinoin, also known as all-trans-retinoic acid, is a prescription drug and the active form of vitamin A, which is taken up by cells in the skin," explains dermatologist Dr Beibei Du-Harpur. "This then binds with retinoid receptors to unravel areas of DNA, thus altering the cell’s behaviour. This ultimately leads to increased cell turnover, promoting a more compact stratum corneum [the top layer of skin] and collagen production amongst other things," she says. As such, it's often prescribed for treating acne and signs of ageing. However, as tretinoin is a prescription drug, you'll need a dermatologist to prescribe it for you, and you cannot use it if you're pregnant.

How to Use Tretinoin

"Whilst having remarkable effects on the skin, tretinoin is notorious for causing irritation and so gradual acclimation is often necessary," says Dr Du-Harpur. "There are various strategies to improve tolerability and decrease the symptoms of this initial retinisation process [of getting your skin used to retinoids]. Technically, tretinoin can be used for even the most sensitive of skins; careful guidance is key. Lower percentages of tretinoin tend to cause less irritation, whereas higher percentages are more irritating but may yield results more rapidly," she adds.

One way of minimisng irritation is to apply a moisturiser before and after applying tretinoin (kind of like a skincare sandwich) and gradually upping the amount of days per week you're using it as your skin acclimatises.

Tretinoin Results

I've been using Klira since testing it for the Who What Wear Next in Beauty Awards last summer (it was our Best in Class winner, FYI), and I've seen a dramatic improvement in my skin. After filling in an in-depth questionnaire and uploading photos of my skin, I was assigned a 'skin size' and accompanying cocktail of ingredients to address my skin's concerns. One of those was tretinoin, which helps to address a whole range of skin concerns, but is particularly good for smoothing uneven skin texture and acne scars.

I've been using the treatment since the summer, and I've seen a great improvement in my skin overall. Every couple of months, I'm given a stronger dosage which can take some getting used to, but all in all, my acne scarring and overall skin texture and tone has hugely improved since I started in.

Shop More Acne Scarring Treatments

It's no secret that I love K-beauty. In fact, some of my all-time favorite products hail from Korea (shout-out to Beauty of Joseon's Relief Sun SPF). But a recent visit to my aesthetician Varuni Palacios's office made me consider a few things before buying more K-beauty products in bulk like I usually do. While she also loves K-beauty, she said there are a few things to keep in mind—especially if you're acne-prone like me.

Don't worry, if you do struggle with breakouts and like to use Korean skincare, I'm definitely not saying you should stop doing that. In fact, there are plenty of amazing Korean brands that cater specifically to acne-prone skin. The only thing Palacios recommends is being more mindful of the ingredient list. I've been guilty of slathering on a heavier K-beauty cream or cleansing oil in the past, and if you're going through treatment, you'll want to be extra cautious of that. For everything Palacios told me, keep reading. She shared her expert insight below.

Why K-Beauty Is So Popular in the U.S.

TBH, it's not a huge mystery why K-beauty products constantly go viral on social media. There's so much to love about them. Palacios explained exactly why it's so great from an aesthetician's point of view.

"I love that K-beauty principles have become mainstream when it comes to the way we care for our skin," she says. "Korean skincare is known for its comprehensive and layered approach to skincare, emphasizing hydration, prevention, and maintaining a healthy skin barrier."

"In the U.S., we look to South Korea as a prominent leader in the global skincare market and have K-beauty to thank for the constant pursuit of innovation that has changed the way we treat skin in the treatment room and at home. I'm talking about multi-step routines that include double-cleansing; use of novel ingredients in product formulations like spicules (my current favorite); fermentation technology; advanced delivery systems (like microencapsulation and nanotechnology) that make ingredients more bioavailable and effective; and an exquisite focus on texture and experience, especially when it comes to serums, ampoules, sheet masks, and something no other can beat: SPF. We also love K-beauty because when compared to the leading U.S. luxury skincare brands we know and love, it’s much more affordable."

Board-certified dermatologist and Lightsaver founder David Kim, MD, also shared what he loves about the Korean philosophy: "K-beauty focuses on ingredients and routines, and it is perfectly aligned with the U.S. philosophy. It's not looking for a quick fix but adopting a routine that will hydrate, brighten, and restore the skin. It's all about prevention and maintenance."

What to Keep in Mind Before Buying K-Beauty If You're Acne-Prone

Even though Palacios is a strong supporter of Korean skincare and its philosophy, she says there are a few things to remember if you're acne-prone or deal with a skin condition. "Despite all that K-beauty has to offer, there are some important factors for consideration when deciding how deep to dive into it, especially if and when experiencing more problematic concerns like acne, rosacea, inflammatory conditions, and pigmentation," she explains. "Korean skincare often prioritizes hydration, brightening, and anti-aging. However, these focuses might not address prevalent skin issues in the U.S. like acne, acne scars, or hyperpigmentation, which often need different ingredients and treatments, or specific care for product formulation without pore-clogging ingredients. Korean beauty standards also differ culturally and may not immediately meet the diverse needs of the U.S. market. Korean skincare products are designed for the Korean climate, environment, and diet, which differ significantly from those in the U.S. Consequently, our skin in the U.S. has different needs."

Another thing Palacios says to consider is potential formula changes once a product reaches the U.S. "While Korea's Ministry of Food and Drug Safety has stricter product regulations than the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA), international products entering the U.S. market often require formulation changes, potentially altering their original appeal," she explains. "And then there is product stability, shelf life, and authenticity to consider, which depend on factors like shipping origin, transit time, varying climates experienced during shipping, and reseller information."

When it comes down to it, Palacios mostly wants to stress being a conscious consumer. Some of these critiques aren't limited to the Korean skincare market—there are plenty of brands here in the U.S. that use comedogenic ingredients that you should also be aware of. The bottom line is that Palacios wants you to know about the ingredients in the products you use and whether they're good for your specific skin. As a pro tip, she recommends utilizing tools like Acne Clinic's pore-clogging ingredient checker or NYC aesthetician Sofie Pavitt's similar tool to make sure your product isn't causing you any new breakouts. "Everyone is different, and to each their own, but my own personal rule of thumb is to turn to K-beauty for hydrating, barrier-restoring products and turn to clinical skincare (that’s clinically trialed and tested for efficacy) for treatment-based products and problematic concerns like acne, rosacea, and pigmentation. But always read your ingredients and know what's pore-clogging. No blanket statements or one-size-fits-all approach—everything in moderation, and most of all, if you like it, I love it."

My Thoughts on K-Beauty as an Acne-Prone Beauty Editor

As a beauty editor who loves to try products, it's hard not to pick up something new from my favorite K-beauty retailers every week. While I'm definitely heeding Palacios's advice on checking for heavier ingredients, I also wanted to share that I've had a great experience with Korean skincare—even though my skin is extremely sensitive (borderline reactive) and acne-prone. I've even used a few formulas that have traditionally pore-clogging ingredients, but they've never caused me any new breakouts. Everyone's skin is different, and if you do struggle with breakouts, you might need to get to know your skin extremely well to know what ingredients work for it and which ones don't.

I love that Korean skincare focuses on repairing the skin barrier, too. I realized that most of my skin issues stemmed from barrier damage, and the more I healed it, the less I broke out. Although Palacios says to proceed with caution and always check the ingredients before using something, we chatted about which K-beauty formulas we both love for acne-prone skin and other products that work extremely well. As an esthetician, it's a question I'm asked on an almost daily basis—how can I make my pores disappear? The short answer is, you can't. Pores are an essential part of our skin structure and allow our skin to function healthily—there's absolutely no way to get rid of them.

What you can do, however, is reduce the appearance of pores. Yes, pore minimising primers can help, but skincare plays a huge role. Pores appear more noticeable when they become enlarged, which can happen when skin is dry and dehydrated (because it thins and stretches) and when the skin is oily and congested (because oil and dead skin builds up in the pores). Pore size can also increase as we age, or if skin is subject to sun damage—both of which result in a decrease in collagen and elastin in the skin, causing pores to widen. It's important to note also that genetics, hormones, and even gender can have an impact on the appearance and size of our pores.

While I really do think we ought to give our pores a little more grace—without them, after all, our skin literally wouldn't be able to function—I totally understand why some people feel conscious of their pores and wish to reduce their visibility. What are pores?

Pores are tiny openings in our skin—everyone has them, approximately 5 million of them, in fact. They cover every inch of our skin (except for our palms and the soles of our feet), and we have around 20,000 of them on our faces alone. These tiny openings contain hair follicles and oil glands, and are responsible for releasing oil and sweat onto the surface of the skin. In doing so they help to release sebum, which naturally moisturises the skin, while sweat helps to regulate our body temperature.

What causes visible pores?

Pores are often more visible in areas of our skin where we have more oil glands, such as the 'T zone' of the face (your forehead, nose and chin). They also become more visible when they become clogged with excess oil and dead skin, causing open comedones, also known as blackheads and whiteheads. This can trap bacteria in the pore, leading to inflammation and breakouts.

While many people associate enlarged pores with oily skin, pores can also become more visible when skin is dehydrated. This is because the skin is no longer plumped with moisture—when it's thin and stretched out, pores appear more noticeable. For the same reason, pores become more obvious as we age, and lose the collagen and elastin which also gives our skin plumpness and structure.

How can you minimise pores?

You can minimise the appearance of pores by keeping skin well hydrated and using collagen-stimulating ingredients like retinoids, so it is plumped up and pores are not stretched. This may sound controversial and ridiculous, but I have to admit that I'm not the biggest fan of pores. Yes, they're essential to live, but why must they be so large and in charge? My nose, in particular, is a big-pore paradise and ground zero for blackheads. The best nose strips act like little miracle workers, purging those blackheads and getting out all the gunk. (Gentle reminder: Pores cannot actually shrink, but good skincare can reduce their appearance.)

I'm old enough to remember when pore strips were the hottest thing, so they give me total late-'90s nostalgia. Pore strips get a bum rap sometimes, but when used correctly and sparingly, they can tackle clogged pores and oily buildup alongside a proper exfoliating routine.

Pore-strip technology has also improved over the years, including the options out there. There are ones that specifically target certain skin types or contain beneficial ingredients, and they available for budgets big and small. What Should I Look for in a Pore Strip?

• Ingredients: Most pore strips are made of hydrocolloid, a material that naturally sucks up all the gunk from your skin. That's really all you need for an effective pore strip, but some options do include additional purifying and/or calming ingredients, such as charcoal, witch hazel, aloe vera, and green tea. Consider these ingredients extra perks, as opposed to essential components (like hydrocolloid). "If you have extremely oily skin, pore strips with charcoal can help dry the oil a little," notes Patel.
• Adhesive strength: "The effectiveness depends on how well the strip adheres," Patel adds. That said, stronger isn't always better. You don't want the pore strip slipping and sliding off your face, but you also don't want to tug off any layers of skin.
• Shape and size: Most pore strips have an oval-shaped design to fit over the bridge of your nose, but some brands do offer other shapes for different contours of your face (like your forehead and chin, for example). That way, you can easily address precise areas of clogged pores.

Do Dermatologists Recommend Pore Strips?

It depends! Patel, for one, isn't against pore strips entirely. "They help remove the oil and debris that collect in pores and form blackheads. They can be satisfying to use and can improve the appearance of the skin temporarily," she shares.

Temporarily is the operative word here, though, as pore strips don't exactly address the root cause of blackheads. Sure, they lift up gunk overnight (extremely satisfying), but if you don't treat clogged pores at the source, they'll only fill back up. "Many dermatologists prefer chemical exfoliants or prescription treatments [like retinol] that address the underlying causes of blackheads," Patel adds.

Not to mention they can cause more harm than good if you use them improperly. "They’re not for everyone," Patel adds. "People who are allergic to adhesive, those that have sensitive skin, and those that are on a prescription retinoid are not good candidates for pore strips, as more irritation and even skin damage could occur."

What's The Best Way To Use Pore Strips?

Given those potential downsides (read: irritation and skin damage), it's important to make sure you use your pore strip safely and correctly. Always read the instructions on your individual product, but Patel recommends giving your face a good wash before applying. You want to create a clean canvas free of excess oil or makeup so the adhesive can stick. Dry skin is usually best. Although, some pore strips adhere best on damp skin—again, read your labels carefully! Go ahead and apply your subsequent serums and moisturizers after the pore strip is locked firmly in place.

After letting the strip work its magic for the allotted time ("Always follow the directions carefully," advises Patel), you can slowly pull it off your skin. Don't rip it right off, as that can cause irritation.

Okay, so you've got acne-prone skin? Naturally, the first step in addressing breakouts is to establish an acne-friendly skincare routine—removing products containing pore-clogging ingredients, and replacing them with lightweight moisturisers, hardworking cleansers, and serums powered by ingredients like salicylic acid and niacinamide.

Up next, we're getting to know Lili Reinhart, founder of the new acne-focused, mental health-supporting skincare brand, Personal Day. Below, she's opening up about her acne journey, answering all of our burning beauty questions, and sharing her favorite products, best-kept self-confidence tips, and more. Enjoy!

Can you tell me how your skincare brand, Personal Day, came to be?

The brand was an idea three years ago. It was kind of just put out there by my agency. "Would you ever want to have a brand? What would that brand look like?" It was a "maybe" conversation. There was a little bit of exploring a couple of different ideas. We landed on a skincare line, but there wasn’t really any kind of purpose or gusto behind it. It was just kind of like, "Yeah, I’ve had acne. Let’s create an acne line." That’s why for the first year that it was in development, it didn’t really go anywhere. The right people weren’t involved. The project kind of fizzled out for me because the passion wasn’t there.

I’ve had acne since I was 12, but I recently had to go on Accutane twice. When I went on it the first time, my acne came back with a vengeance. I went on it again. It just seemed like nothing was working for my skin and it was kind of a lost cause.

I met an esthetician in L.A., Sarah Ford, who’s now on our board of advisors for Personal Day. I started working with her, and she was like, "Are you checking your skincare ingredients?" And I said no because I didn’t think I had to. I guess I assumed skincare was trustworthy, but boy, was I wrong. I started looking up all the ingredients in my skincare and realized that so much of what I was using had acne-triggering ingredients. That was blowing my mind. I cut out all of the products that I was consistently using that had fungal acne triggers and pore-clogging ingredients. My skin started to improve. It made me think, I need to create a line of acne-care products that do not have any acne-triggering ingredients and that people can trust. They know when they try it, it will not break them out.

The presumption is that skincare that is marketed as acne-safe is going to help. With Personal Day, it’s like you’re taking out the barrier of research and trial and error.

For sure. I know I’ve been scared to put things on my skin. Now, I’m kind of a freak about it. When someone does my makeup, I prep my skin on my own. I don’t let people use random primers on me. I’ve sat in a makeup chair and been like, "Hold on," and Googled the ingredients in a skincare product before they put it on my face because when my skin breaks out, it severely affects my mental health. Every precaution I can take to make sure what I’m putting on my face won’t create or exacerbate a problem, that’s of the utmost importance to me.

So, yeah, that was the gusto I needed to pursue making a brand. I understand the questions and eyebrows that are raised when a quote-unquote celebrity comes out with a skincare line. I totally understand the suspicion. People assume, "Oh, this is a brand deal. This is a money grab." It’s like, no, I genuinely created the brand because I needed a brand that I could trust completely, and I felt like there wasn’t one on the market.

I’ve been talking about my acne publicly for eight or nine years. Seeing the response I get every time I post about it… the camaraderie of people saying, "I'm having this experience. Thank you for sharing yours." I've only ever felt encouragement when I opened up about my acne journey. To think that I could also create products that others could find effective and trust was so special. That’s really what appealed to me overall.

Speaking of the quote-unquote celebrity beauty brands, I think there’s an authenticity meter. People can tell when something is genuine, and in your case, born of personal experience.

Absolutely. I was never going to create a brand or just smack my face on something that had no relevance. I think there are a lot of brands that exist where people go, "I don’t understand the correlation between the person and the product." If you could think of a brand for Lili Reinhart, it would be an acne-care brand that supports mental health—that is the most "me" brand that I could think of, so to actually be doing it is sort of incredible. I'm so lucky that things came together. It's very exciting. Something was a concept a couple of years ago, and now it's an actual thing with results that people are so stoked about. And it's changing people's skin, and it's absolutely changed my own skin.

Every time I use my own products, I smile a bit to myself, because I think, Wow, I helped create this thing that I myself am using, and am seeing great results from. I feel so confident and happy when I share that with the people around me, like when I share it with my boyfriend, my assistant, and my friends. I'm like, "Try this. Be a test dummy with me on these lab samples, and let's see which ones we like best, and which ones help our skin." So I've been very all hands on deck every step.

I think when people are struggling with acne, you're kind of cherry-picking products from a variety of brands that might or may not work for you. You might hear about this awesome cleanser from one brand that worked for someone else. So you try that, but you're using a serum from another, and so on and so forth.

You're exactly right, and I feel like that's why people have 25-step skincare routines because you're not getting what you need all in one line or all in one product. And it's frustrating. I don't want 13,000 products on my bathroom counter. It stresses me the fuck out. I have OCD, you know, like I'm a Virgo with OCD, and I get overwhelmed. I get stressed. I need to simplify. The thing that really differentiates Personal Day from other brands is the fact that it is acne care, but it is also skincare. We have ingredients in our skincare that are for the long-term health of your skin. So it's not only treating and preventing acne, it is absolutely keeping your skin healthier in the long term. So people without acne, like my CEO who doesn't necessarily have acne per se, use the skincare line every day. Her skin has seen a noticeable difference because of the ingredients we have in there. So hopefully, you can rely on Personal Day for your skin's all-around needs—not just acne.

Historically, people have had to choose, right? You can choose that powerful acne cleanser and you use it until your acne is gone. After that, it's drying, it's harsh, it's actually doing more harm than good. How did you develop Personal Day in this way, to be both acne-care and long-term skincare? Were there any challenges along the way?

Our formulas have acne treatment ingredients, but we wanted them to have skincare-level ingredients too. It's adding niacinamide, squalene, and hyaluronic acid. On top of that, you have these actives like azelaic and salicylic acids. We're the only acne care brand with this new acid, called mevalonic acid. It basically repairs your skin on a molecular level. We have exclusivity of that in the acne care space, which is super exciting for us. We have that in two of our products—our moisturizer and one of our masks.

We wanted the brand to be inclusive. You don't just use it when you're breaking out. You use it afterward to help prevent breakouts. You use it because it's not drying. Sometimes, breakouts come from skin barriers being damaged, and when you have acne and you're using actives, your skin can get really dried out, which is why we created our hydrating mask. It's so lovely. When you are breaking out, it is still very important to keep your skin hydrated. We created this really nice mask. It has a really pretty green color to it, and it's packed with super hydrating ingredients.

What were some of the biggest lessons or learning curves?

I had no idea the massive undertaking it would be and how long the process would be, although it wouldn't have deterred me. If you told me, "Hey, this is going take three years to get it right," I would have said, "Okay, then let's do it." But being three years later, and now it's an actual thing, and I hold the products, and I have the products on my bathroom counter, I'm like, "Oh, shit, this is me. This is my brand." I had no idea it would actually come to fruition.

I learned that I could be a founder and I could help create something that can help people. I love to talk about mental health. I love to talk about and share my acne experiences and my feelings about body positivity, like my body dysmorphia. I'm an open book, but to actually create something to help people is taking it one step further, and I think that just learning that I'm in the position and able to do that, I feel so grateful and lucky for everything that has led up to this.

I can create a skincare brand, but I can also create an effective one. I understand the suspicions around celebrity brands. I get it, but the connection for me is so real, and the proof is in the pudding. I hope that people can see that I've always really tried to be authentic with my fans, and I hope that they see this as an authentic piece of myself and a piece of my heart that I've put into this, so they can walk away trusting it.

It's easy to think of acne as only skin deep. It's a skin condition, sure, but it can do a number on confidence, mental health, on everything. Can you share a little bit about your personal experience? I know you've been very vocal about your acne struggles in the past.

Yeah, it's rough. I have a very, very rough time when my skin is bad even going outside. I've been in the industry since I was 12, but I’ve been dealing with acne mostly in the last 10 years. Dealing with acne while filming or being on a photo shoot or doing press… You can't hide. People are staring at your face. I think there is such a feeling of shame around acne because for so long since magazines were invented, they showed women and men with clear, beautiful skin. Anything other than that was supposedly shameful and wrong and dirty. I think there's also this kind of gross misconception that having acne makes you dirty. Like, I can't have that "clean girl" aesthetic if my skin is bad. That's how I felt for a really long time. And I still very much have good days and bad days. If I'm feeling more depressed in a period of my life, then, yeah, a breakout is enough to absolutely ruin my day. I don't want to leave the house. I don't even want to be on a Zoom call, or I’m on a Zoom call with a spot treatment on my pimple or a pimple patch on. When I am feeling more confident, it's easier to kind of push that aside. But I still wear baseball hats when I break out on my forehead.

I've shown up to set and gotten a cortisol shot in a big pimple to make the inflammation go down, which I don't suggest doing, because it created a dent in my skin, which I had to get microneedled and fixed. Unless it's your wedding day and you need to really settle that shit down fast, I suggest staying away from it because it can create divots that you have to spend 1000s of dollars fixing with other treatments.

I love when people are vocal about mental health. I myself have anxiety. I feel like the conversation is always about how when your skin isn’t looking its best, it can affect your mental health, but I think we can flip the script on that too because there are times when I'm in a darker place with mental health and that reflects on my skin. I think it's like a give-and-take.

You go to a dermatologist or whatever, you're breaking out, and sometimes they go, "Well, how's your stress level?" I laugh at that question. Do you think there's a human being on this planet who's not stressed out right now in this climate? Stress, travel, diet, hormones, everything in the world affects your skin, and it's like you just sometimes can't fucking win. I think I've accepted it. I'm 28, and I still have acne. I don't think it's going away, so it is what it is. It's something I'm gonna have to deal with my whole life. That's fine because there's nothing I can do about it, but talking about it, making it feel less shameful, following accounts that support acne positivity on Instagram and TikTok… It's important to surround yourself with good energy around it. I think it makes a world of difference. If all you're seeing on social media is gorgeous glam shots of people, then yeah, you're probably gonna walk away feeling pretty bad about your acne. I've unfollowed people. I've muted accounts because they make me feel like shit. That's not real life. You don't walk around on the street and see perfect skin.

The two main pillars of [Personal Day] are empathy and compassion. I wanted those two things to be evident in the vibe of the brand. When you click on our Instagram page, when you click on our TikToks, and when you go to the website, we want the consumer to feel seen and heard. And if people don't even know that I'm connected to it, that almost makes me feel better because the products speak for themselves.

I love the name of the brand. Can you tell me why you chose Personal Day to encapsulate the brand and its message?

No one tells you how hard it's going to be to choose a name. I've had to choose a name for my production company, I've had to choose a skincare name, and then I've had to choose the product names. Finding something that is not copyrighted in the skincare space is nearly impossible. It was a journey and took a really long time. Personal Day was a name that was in the middle of a list of maybe 30 other names, and I was like, "Wait—let's circle that one." A personal day is a day that you take care of yourself. It’s a day of self-care, and acne care is self-care, and skincare is self-care. I was like, "Oh, this is making sense. This is coming together." Acne is such a personal and intimate experience, and taking a personal day is a personal experience. It just made sense.

I love that. It's unique!

Thank you! I didn't want my name in there. I was like, "My name will not be in this brand." I didn't want the word "heart" in there. I didn't want it to say "By Lili Reinhart"—nothing. I want the brand to speak for itself. I will be so happy if and when the brand stands on its own and people don't even know I'm associated with it. That means the products are speaking for themselves and that's always been my number one thing. There's no point in having a brand or having products if they don't work. They have to work. That's why it took three years from start to finish to make it right. I'm sending these products to people I love. I would be mortified if I sent them a product that screwed up their skin or didn't work.

One hundred percent. I think Personal Day has such a comforting vibe.

Good, I'm glad! I want it to feel cozy. For our brand shoot, we shot on film. I brought my own little point-and-shoot film camera because I love the feeling of film. It feels cozy. We want Personal Day to be your big sister giving you advice on your skin and looking at you with empathy, love, and acceptance. And just chill vibes. We want it to feel calming and relaxing.

You mentioned makeup earlier and how you do your own skin prep and you look up ingredients in the makeup chair. What makeup products do you use and love?

I have looked up like every foundation ever, and I use Armani's Luminous Silk Foundation. To be honest, no makeup has no acne-triggering ingredients, right? But you find what's the best out there. I use Armani makeup, and I use their concealer pretty much every day. But also, on a day-to-day basis, I don't wear a lot of makeup. If anything, I use a little spoolie to brush up my brows and a brow pencil—the Hourglass brow pencil. It's hard to find a brow pencil for blonde eyebrows, but we get there. Other than that, I'm a lip balm girly. Armani has never broken me out, and so that's my tried and true right now.

I actually heard from an esthetician that that's the only foundation she will recommend to her acne-prone clients.

Wow, there you go. I was looking up everything because, on Riverdale, I was wearing makeup for 16 hours a day, so I had to make sure what I was wearing for that long wasn't going to screw up my face. So, yeah, I did a lot of research. You'd be surprised when you plug something in that you're using every day and it has like, 13 fungal acne triggers. I'm like, "Okay, I will be throwing this in the garbage. Thank you very much."

Are there any beauty trends that you regret buying into? On the flip side, are there any beauty trends that you're happy you embraced?

I was never really into the heavy contour in like, 2017 I think. Like heavy makeup was the thing—heavy contour, heavy bronzer, heavy foundation. I had a makeup artist do that to me, and I looked at myself in natural lighting and was absolutely horrified. I lean very much toward the "clean girl" aesthetic: light foundation, light concealer, just the brows, and a little bit of mascara.

You're speaking my language. I don't think I have a face that handles heavy makeup well, or it's just not my look. Whenever a makeup artist does a heavy smoky eye on me, I look in the mirror and I have an identity crisis.

One thousand percent! Just because something's a trend doesn't mean it works for you. If I'm working with a new makeup artist, I say I don't like eyeliner on my waterline. You cannot tightline my eyes with black liner. It makes my eyes look incredibly small. It doesn't work for me. So when I do a smoky eye, I do like a brown or a taupe, or, like, even a purple, because I have green eyes, so I like a more mauve-purple. I've even done red eye shadow or pink. I like to play around with that. But yeah, no black smoky eyes for me. I'm a brown-neutral girl.

Same. How has your approach to beauty evolved over the years? And would you say it's different now than, let's say, like when you were in your teens?

I mean, to be honest, I've always stayed pretty tried and true to the minimal makeup esthetic, When I've tried to branch out and try something different, I've always kind of come back to the same thing where I like to play up my eyes because I think I have nice eyes. I don't know if a red lip is my thing. I don't think heavy blush is my thing. I don't think heavy contour is my thing. I want to look nice and have glowy skin, but not crazy dewy. I want pretty brushed-up brows, but nothing crazy. I like a couple of individual lashes at the end of my eyes when I'm going to an event.

But it's important that I tried things and saw how it photographed. I wouldn't have known, "Okay, we're not putting eyeliner on the waterline," and "Okay, we're not doing an orangey red lip because that doesn't look good on me." Even clothing-wise, some things on the carpet, I'm like, "This looked great in the fitting, but it looked absolutely horrible on the carpet because the color wasn't right with my skin down, or the shape looks weird." I absolutely have looked like shit on a red carpet and learned my lesson, but I'm sure there are still plenty more lessons that I will be learning in the future. That's how we grow.

I think that's something that TikTok disguises from you. You're not born with a built-in aesthetic, and you just know everything that works for you and what doesn't. My 20s have not been the best years of my life. I'm 28 and fuck no, these have not been the best years of my life. I'm praying and hoping, thinking that my 30s will be fucking great, and I'll have gotten shit figured out, and I will be 30, flirty, and thriving.

I'm turning 30 this next birthday, and I honestly can't wait. I have no qualms.

I think it's great. Let's be in our 30s and let's know ourselves and know how to take care of ourselves. I think that’s super important. Growing up, in movies, it was like, "You need to feel better? We're going out, we're getting drunk, we're texting boys. I have never in my life responded to that. I learned in my 20s that I don't like to drink. I don't drink. Do acne spot treatments actually work?

Despite what some naysayers might want you to think, spot treatments are, indeed, an effective (and speedy!) way to treat stubborn spots. "The best way to treat acne is to prevent it from occurring in the first place," says Anthony Rossi, MD, FAAD, FACMS. "A great skin regime, diet, exercise, and hydration are all so important for skin health, including acne. That said, when a breakout does occur, acne spot treatments are an effective treatment for one or two pimples." If your breakouts are more volatile or more frequent, however, Rossi says you'll want to see a board-certified dermatologist who can help assess the situation.

How do you use acne spot treatments?

To apply a cream or gel spot treatment, wash the area with a gentle cleanser, ice the blemish, and then dab the treatment to the area without applying much pressure. To avoid applying the product anywhere but the blemish, a Q-Tip can be used. When using spot treatment patches, warm water can help loosen the seal for easy removal.

What is the purpose of benzoyl peroxide and salicylic acid?

While benzoyl peroxide works to kill bacteria and clear pores, salicylic acid helps exfoliate the surface of the skin and penetrates the pores to remove oil while sulfur has anti-inflammatory, antimicrobial, and drying properties. Shamban adds that these ingredients often work well with azelaic acid, tea tree oil, hemp seed oil, and witch hazel, but that they may irritate sensitive skin. If your skin responds negatively to any of the above, consider looking for one with aloe vera for calming effects.

Can retinol remove acne scars?

Retinol is the name on every skincare lover’s lips nowadays for its skin-rejuvenating benefits—namely its ability to gently exfoliate dead skin and bring fresh, glowing skin to the surface. “Topical retinoids can increase cell turnover and decrease hyperpigmentation, so that means they can help to speed up healing and recovery after a pimple and decrease post-inflammatory hyperpigmentation,” explains King. “Retinoids also help to stimulate collagen production, so that's helpful for atrophic scarring.” However, King points out that severe textural scarring cannot be treated solely with topical retinoids.

Is there anyone who shouldn't use spot treatments for acne?

"Anyone can benefit from using a spot treatment," says celebrity facialist Renée Rouleau. However, if you're someone who has sensitive skin, many of the active ingredients found in acne spot treatments might irritate your complexion. Only use the recommended amount, and abide by the product's instructions, only leaving the formula on for as long as it's recommended on the packaging.

"The easiest and most efficient way to use an acne spot treatment is at night as the last step of a skincare routine," Rouleau explains. However, she adds that spot treatments can be used in the daytime if the product goes on clear and isn't visible (or if it's recommended for daytime use). “If that's the case, perform your usual daily skincare routine. (Be sure to apply sunscreen!) Gently wipe the blemish to remove the skincare products applied, and then apply the acne spot treatment, and let it dry. Be sure to pat in your sunscreen once complete."

Different retinoids have different strengths, and tretinoin is in the top tier. Sure, it can dramatically improve the state of the skin, but it can also cause gnarly side effects like dryness, flakiness, redness, and irritation. It's only available by prescription so it can be used under the guidance of a medical professional.

Still, tretinoin is a popular skincare ingredient for a reason. It's potent, and it can give the skin incredible anti-aging (and anti-acne!) results. Before you book that appointment with your derm to get your hands on a tube of tretinoin, I recommend taking a beat. First, let's get answers to some of the most frequently asked questions about it. What is tretinoin?

1. It is one of the strongest retinoids, so use it responsibly.

Just like all retinoids, tretinoin is a derivative of vitamin A. Unlike other retinoids, though, it's the strongest form. It's also the active ingredient in brand-name prescriptions such as Retin-A. What makes it the strongest? Here's a crash course. Every retinoid must be converted to retinoic acid in the skin before it can take effect. Weaker retinoids require more steps to convert to retinoic acid. Stronger retinoids require fewer steps to convert to retinoic acid. This is why tretinoin can cause more intense side effects—like flakiness, dryness, and irritation—than non-prescription retinoids. (More on that in a minute.) This is also why it's important to follow label instructions and your doctor's orders when using it. If you don't, you could be doing more harm than good.

What skin concerns does it treat?

Brendan Camp, MD, FAAD, double board–certified dermatologist at MDCS Dermatology, says that it's FDA approved to treat acne as well as "concerns associated with mature skin, such as fine lines, wrinkles, and dark spots because of its ability to increase collagen production and improve cell turnover."

Esthetician and skin expert Kristin Gunn echoes this. She says, "It can be used to address a wide variety of skin concerns like fine lines, acne, and hyperpigmentation. It's fantastic for anti-aging and great at improving skin texture by increasing cell turnover."

As for its anti-acne benefits, know that it's more about the long game than it is about instant effects. According to Mina Amin, MD, FAAD, a board-certified dermatologist, "it is helpful for acne-prone skin [and] helps prevent new acne" from forming. Tretinoin won't necessarily clear existing acne, but Amin says it can also help with skin texture and hyperpigmentation.

Blair Murphy-Rose, MD, FAAD, is a leading board-certified cosmetic, medical, and surgical dermatologist at the Laser & Skin Surgery Center of New York. She says tretinoin is a gold-standard acne treatment. "Tretinoin binds to receptors in the skin, which triggers processes that speed up skin cell turnover to help reduce clogged pores and to decrease sebum and oil production—excellent for acne treatment. In fact, most dermatologists recommend a prescription-strength retinoid to their teenage and adult acne patients," she says.

What skin types is it suitable for?

All of the experts say that tretinoin works its magic on all skin types. "[It] tends to be best tolerated by oily or combination skin," Amin says. The only time it should be avoided entirely is during pregnancy. "Avoid using if pregnant or breastfeeding," Murphy-Rose warns. "We know that taking high doses of vitamin A by mouth is associated with birth defects. We recommend avoidance of topical forms of vitamin A during pregnancy because we do not have data to suggest that it is safe, and in theory, it may not be safe."

If you're not pregnant or breastfeeding, Camp reiterates that tretinoin is generally suitable for all skin types, but oily skin will tolerate it best. "Tretinoin is best tolerated by those with oily, acne-prone skin because of its ability to cause skin dryness, redness, and flaking," he says. "However, when used cautiously, tretinoin may be tolerated by most skin types. Particularly, sensitive skin may have difficulty getting adjusted to the changes associated with tretinoin use."

What are the potential side effects?

The potential side effects of tretinoin are no joke. "While it has great benefits, tretinoin is notorious for unwanted side effects like skin irritation, redness, peeling, and increased sun sensitivity," Murphy-Rose says. While the first three effects can usually be managed by decreasing the frequency or amount of product used, the adjustment stage in which the skin adapts to the retinoid—commonly referred to as the retinization period—is often unavoidable.

"The skin will be more prone to sunburn, dryness, or irritation, especially during the first two to three weeks," Amin says. This is because it stimulates cell turnover, which causes the skin cells to slough off faster than they would normally.

Murphy-Rose says the length of the retinization period will differ according to your skin type, the strength of the tretinoin, the amount used, and the frequency with which you use it. "Classically, this takes about two weeks, but it will vary among individuals," she says.

2. Purging should be expected—don't dramatically increase or decrease usage.

As if that's not enough, it can cause a temporary increase in acne, which is known as purging. "It can cause some increase in acne—also known as a purging stage—at the beginning, which tends to improve with time," Amin says. Usually, it lasts a few weeks, so be prepared, and don't automatically stop using it if you see more breakouts appear. On the flip side, don't start using more of the product to minimize said breakouts. "Like most acne prescriptions, tretinoin should be used for two to three months before deciding if it is helpful or not," Camp says.

How should I incorporate it into my skincare routine?

3. Incorporate it into your skincare routine slowly.

The experts recommend starting slow. "To limit irritation, try to develop a tolerance to the medication gradually," Camp says. "Consider applying a pea-sized amount to the face once every third night for one month, then every other night for one month, then nightly as tolerated. Apply a gentle moisturizer to the skin afterward, or consider mixing the medication and the moisturizer together to dilute the tretinoin."

Murphy-Rose recommends being intentional about where you place the tretinoin on your face. "Spare the eyelids and corners of the nose and lips where more product can accumulate and cause excess irritation near mucosal surfaces," she says. "Moisturize well while using tretinoin. I generally recommend applying your moisturizer after tretinoin. If you are struggling to tolerate tretinoin and have tried these tips, you can try the sandwich method."

What is the sandwich method, you ask? Amin recommends those with sensitive skin use it to mitigate the drying and irritating effects of tretinoin. Start by applying moisturizer, then apply the retinoid, then apply moisturizer again. It creates a protective barrier for the skin and helps keep sensitivity at bay.

4. Apply it only at night, and use sunscreen during the day.

Oh, tretinoin, like all retinoids, should only be applied at night. That's because it increases photosensitivity aka the skin's susceptibility to UV rays. "The skin will be more sensitive to the sun when you're using tretinoin even though you're applying it at night," Amin says. "Therefore, it is important to wear sunscreen during the day."

There are skincare ingredients that are really good at doing one or two things—think hyaluronic acid for hydrating and plumping the skin or vitamin C for providing antioxidant protection and brightening effects. I don't think people realize the diversity of skin issues and concerns that niacinamide can fix. Redness and irritation? Yes. Blackheads and enlarged pores? Totally. Dark spots and hyperpigmentation? You better believe it.

That goes for Geeta Yadav, MD, board-certified dermatologist and founder of Facet Dermatology, who says, "Niacinamide has many, many benefits, and it's worthy of the hype!" What Is Niacinamide, and How Can It Benefit the Skin?

First things first. Yadav says that what we refer to as niacinamide is actually a naturally occuring form of vitamin B3. It's often derived from grains for use in skincare products, and it offers extensive benefits for all skin types. We're not kidding. It can benefit almost anyone, regardless of skin type or concern. It's even pregnancy-safe. "While you should always ask your ob-gyn before using anything new while pregnant, niacinamide is regarded as pregnancy-safe," Yadav says. "It's a nice do-it-all option to have in your arsenal during pregnancy when your skincare choices are a little limited!"

As for the specific benefits, get ready. "Niacinamide can help soothe inflammation and redness, promote more hydrated skin, help balance oil production, even skin tone, and so much more," Yadav says. How Often Should Niacinamide Be Used?

Knowing all the benefits of niacinamide really makes us want to soak our skin in it, but first, we need to know whether it's safe for daily use. Luckily, Yadav says it is—twice daily, actually. "It can absolutely be used both morning and night," she says. "Niacinamide has antioxidant properties, so applying niacinamide in the a.m. will give you that dose of free radical defense you need to protect your skin from environmental aggressors throughout the day."

It also plays well with other active ingredients. "For the most part, you can combine niacinamide with any active ingredient," Yadav says. "Though, you want to be cautious if you're prone to sensitivity, especially if you're choosing to combine niacinamide with other potentially skin-sensitizing ingredients, like AHA/BHA/retinoids or even vitamin C." In other words, take it slow. If you've never used a niacinamide skincare product before, avoid applying it alongside the aforementioned ingredients until you know your skin tolerates it well.

Are There Any Drawbacks or Downsides to Using Niacinamide?

Yadav says there's only one downside to using niacinamide, and it's entirely theoretical. It's generally very well tolerated, but sensitive skin could still react to it. "Some individuals, especially those with sensitive skin, may find that it causes their skin to flush or get irritated, particularly at high concentrations," she says. To avoid irritation, start off by using a lower percentage of niacinamide and introduce it into your skincare routine slowly. As always, it's a good idea to patch-test a new skincare product before slathering it on your skin.

What Percentage of Niacinamide Should You Look For in a Skincare Product?

With so many niacinamide-spiked skincare products out there, it's difficult to deduce which one will work for your skin. Luckily, Yadav has some pointers. "A concentration around 5% will yield the best results without increasing the risk of skin irritation," she says. "Many people don't experience irritation until they go past 10%, which I would say is the top concentration you should consider. If you have sensitive skin, I'd recommend starting at a lower concentration and working your way up."

When you have acne-prone skin, finding a good moisturiser can feel like a daunting task. Chances are you (like me) grew up thinking that stripping the moisture from your skin would help to dry out your spots and that moisturisers would clog your pores and contribute to breakouts. However, it's a common misconception that you should skip moisturiser if you have acne-prone skin. In fact, doing so is probably causing more harm than good—as I learned the hard way as a teenager who avoided moisturiser at all costs. 

Keeping skin hydrated means that it's healthy and can function optimally, which means it’s better able to defend itself from bacteria and irritants and can heal and repair damage efficiently. In addition, moisturising skin will help regulate oil production (a leading factor in the formation of breakouts) and soothe and calm any existing spots. What’s more, if your skincare routine is oriented towards clearing acne, chances are it contains active ingredients like benzoyl peroxide and salicylic acid, which whilst effective, do have a drying effect on the skin.

My learnings from 10 plus years of testing moisturisers on my acne-prone skin? First, avoid richer textures and oil-based formulas, and opt instead for lightweight, water-based gel-creams. These moisturisers will utilise ingredients like glycerin and hyaluronic acid to help rehydrate and support the skin barrier without clogging pores, irritating breakouts or leaving a greasy residue. 

Second, maintain round-the-clock hydration and commit to twice daily moisturising even if your skin doesn't feel dry. You’re likely to find that your skin looks clearer and calmer over time and that any breakouts you experience will heal quickly and without leaving marks or scars. Finally, if you think that having acne-prone skin equates to having oily skin, it likely doesn’t. My T-zone was far oilier and shinier when I skipped moisturiser than it is now that moisturiser is essential in my skincare routine. By keeping my face well moisturised I’ve not only restored balance to my skin but also learned that it’s possible to reduce the appearance of enlarged pores (because skin is plumped with moisture and not stretched taut).

In my 18 years of living with acne, moisturiser has been the hardest product to nail down, and it took me a long time to get out of the mindset that it would clog my pores and cause more breakouts. What I now know through my career as a beauty editor and training as an esthetician, is that not all moisturisers are created equal, and it really is all about formula.

I struggled with acne for so long that I honestly thought my skin would never clear up. If you're going through the same thing, just know that there is a light at the end of the tunnel. I found said light thanks to Los Angeles aesthetician Caroline Godsick. I can genuinely tell you that her custom approach to acne at The LA Skin Club works miracles. I've seen a lot of aestheticians over the years as a beauty editor, but to be honest, I won't see anyone but Godsick now. She truly saved my angry, inflamed skin by first cluing me in to a few things I've been doing wrong. I'm sharing these in the hopes that you too have a light-bulb moment about your skincare routine. 1. Overusing Acids and Strong Retinoids

This was a mistake I made for years before seeing Godsick, but luckily, I realized this was an issue and stopped using things like tretinoin and super-strong acids. I was, however, using a 2% salicylic acid cleanser when I first began seeing Godsick, and she let me know that this might be contributing to the issue and causing more breakouts since my skin is super sensitive.

"Some common mistakes I see with my acne clients when it comes to their skincare regimen is overusing acids, whether it's prescription retinol/retin-a, at-home peel pads, exfoliating cleansers, or all of the above," she says. "I often find that people don't realize when they are purchasing products that are marketed for acne-prone skin that most of these products include some form of acid, and when their entire regimen is full of exfoliating ingredients, that becomes a major problem. When we over-exfoliate and strip the skin of its natural oils, the skin's oil production will start to work in overdrive and potentially increase the spread of bacteria."

2. Dehydrating the Skin

This was another huge mistake I made for years. I always thought that my acne would clear up if I just dried out my oily skin. Boy, was I wrong. I realized this too late, and my skin suffered some major damage that I'm still recovering from to this day. My skin is definitely more dehydrated than it used to be but recovering thanks to Godsick and her magical abilities. She breaks this one down further for us.

"Another issue is dehydrating the skin," she explains. "Most people's first reaction to acne is to dry out their breakouts with spot treatments, clay masks, and they skip moisturizing. When we dehydrate the skin, the bacteria and oil can get stuck in the sub-layers of the epidermis, creating a compromised barrier."

3. Using a Strong Concentration of Vitamin C

The first red flag Godsick identified with my skincare routine when I first started seeing her was my vitamin C serum. I was using a vitamin C serum right after my 2% salicylic acid cleanser in the morning, and my super-sensitive skin did not like that. Once I cooled it on those two things, my breakouts started to calm down. Godsick told me a bit more about vitamin C and why it isn't always great for those who are struggling with breakouts.

"Another mistake that most people are unaware of is that their vitamin C serum could potentially contribute to their breakouts. While I tell all my clients that I love and adore vitamin C, especially for dealing with pigmentation, many of these serums are formulated at too high a concentration for acne concerns. As such, I tell most of my clients that once we get their acne under control, we can slowly make vitamin C serums a part of their regimen."

Godsick's Best Advice for Acne

I tried "fixing" my skin for years on my own because I wasn't finding the right help at a dermatologist's office. While it can also be tough finding the right aesthetician, Godsick is the best and has so much to offer. Here's her best advice.

"For anyone struggling with acne, my first piece of advice is to visit a licensed professional. In the world of social media and skin influencers, I see a lot of misinformation provided by people who are simply untrained and have no authority to give such advice. When it comes to skin, one size does not fit all. So my advice to each of my clients differs. Some common practices most people can benefit from are finding a balanced regimen from your skincare professional, avoiding touching/picking your face, doing monthly extractions/facials, icing your skin to reduce inflammation, incorporating LED into your routine, and wearing sunscreen."

Anyone who struggles with acne (or any other skin concern for that matter), knows that if anyone is claiming a skincare product is a "miracle" or "works for everyone," it's probably too good to be true. That's because everyone's skin is different—even if they're struggling with the same concern. 

That's especially true for acne. Take two people who experience breakouts and one of them may respond better to certain treatments. One may tolerate active ingredients better. One may have a lower irritation threshold and thus require more soothing ingredients in their skincare products. You get the idea.

What Is Mandelic Acid and How Does it Benefit the Skin?

Brendan Camp is a board-certified dermatologist at MDCS Dermatology. He says mandelic acid is an alpha-hydroxy acid—the category of exfoliating acids that also includes glycolic and lactic acids (salicylic is a beta-hydroxy acid). "While mandelic acid

can be derived from bitter almonds, the mandelic acid used in skincare products is generally synthetic," he says. 

Just like most other skincare acids, the main function of mandelic acid is to exfoliate the skin. "Mandelic acts as a gentle exfoliator," Camp says. "Because of its larger molecular weight, mandelic acid does not penetrate deeply. It is therefore considered a gentle exfoliant suitable for those with sensitive or acne-prone skin." 

Sofie Pavitt is a skin expert, esthetician, and founder of the eponymous (and sought-after) skin studio in NYC. She reiterates that what sets mandelic acid apart is its large molecular size. "Mandelic acid is a large molecule size AHA that dissolves the bonds between dead skin and healthy skin underneath. The large molecule size means it is not going to cause irritation. It's a low and slow treatment which is perfect for sensitive skin. It’s also brightening and antibacterial, so it’s really giving you a lot for one ingredient." 

What Makes It So Effective at Clearing Acne? 

While mandelic acid can benefit myriad skin types, it's especially recommended for those who struggle with breakouts and irritation. "As an exfoliant, mandelic acid can prevent the formation of clogged pores, which can otherwise contribute to the formation of an incipient acne lesion," Camp says. "Because it is more gentle, mandelic acid may be better tolerated than other potentially harsh acne ingredients, like salicylic acid or retinol." 

That's why Pavitt recommends mandelic acid to all of her acne-prone clients. "My philosophy is that I want my clients to be exfoliating daily to really help nudge those dead cells out of the way to prevent build-up and breakouts," she says. "Lactic and glycolic [acids] are too strong to use daily. That's why I love this large molecule size of mandelic. … I also like combining it with other actives. She plays well with other ingredients such as benzoyl peroxide, retinols, and low-percentage salicylic acids or willow bark BHAs." 

How Often Should Mandelic Acid Be Used?

A general rule of thumb is to use an exfoliant two to three times a week," Camp says. "You may want to use it less often if you have a history of

particularly sensitive skin." He notes that overuse of exfoliators can cause redness, dryness, and irritation, so it's best to start slow. Also, there's the matter of sun protection. "Exfoliants can make skin more sun sensitive, so it is important to use an SPF moisturizer."

Pavitt, on the other hand, operates on a philosophy of daily (but gentle) exfoliation. She recommends starting by using mandelic acid every other day and then amping it up to once per day. "This is the perfect acid for irritated, breakout-prone skin or even someone with super sensitivity," she says. "The only thing I recommend is to isolate your actives within your routine. Don't have four or five exfoliators in place with retinol, vitamin C, etc.; this is the only time I see people getting irritated when using mandelic acid (they're using too many actives)."

To avoid going overboard, Pavitt recommends sticking to the essentials. "I recommend starting with a gentle non-active cleanser, followed by a mandelic clearing serum, a noncomedogenic moisturizer, and SPF if you're using it in the daytime." Oh, and if you're not sure whether or not you're using the right products, she has your back. "Use my pore-clogging ingredients checker at sofiepavittface.com," she says. My journey to "good skin" has been a marathon. Sometimes, no matter how diligently you wash your face or apply topicals like retinol, acne crops up. Blame it on stress, lack of sleep, hormones, you name it—sometimes, pimples are just inescapable. If you need to zap a zit fast, you have limited options. There are pimple patches, which draw out oil and protect the skin barrier but require keeping a patch on your face, or cortisone shots, which work instantly to reduce inflammation but can be pricey. One other remedy for acne? LED light therapy. 

What exactly is LED light therapy?

"LED light therapy, also known as light emitting diode, refers to treatments that use lights that emit different wavelengths to target different skincare concerns," says board-certified dermatologist Marisa Garshick, MD. "These concerns include acne reduction, collagen boosting, and overall improvement in skin tone and texture." Different types of LED light have different benefits to the skin—for example, blue light might be better for acne since it kills bacteria on the skin's surface, while red light is able to penetrate the skin more deeply, which means it might be better for collagen production. 

How does LED light help acne?

When you're targeting acne specifically, you'll likely want to opt for a blue LED since it kills bacteria on the skin. "Skin bacteria are one of the contributing factors of acne, along with oil production, clogged pores, and inflammation," says board-certified dermatologist Brendan Camp, MD. "Bacteria may be susceptible to effects of blue light on skin, which includes the production of reactive oxygen species. A reduction in bacteria may lead to improvements in acne."

Other forms of LED light are also beneficial to the skin (and may even help acne in the process, too). "Red light can stimulate collagen production, [which] may help to improve the appearance of fine lines and wrinkles over time as well as improve the overall texture of the skin," says Garshick. Yellow light may also help with sun damage and skin aging. 

Is LED light for skin safe?

The short answer is yes, LED light therapy is considered safe for all skin types. You do, however, need to ensure you're using LED light properly to avoid side effect like redness, swelling, or other forms of irritation. Don't use LED light more than three to five times a week, and always cleanse your skin before using LED therapy. "It is also important to use be sure to protect your eyes when using LED light devices, so be sure to look for a product that ensures proper eye covering is in place," says Garshick.

Waking up to breakouts on your face happens to everyone at some point in our lives, and fortunately most of us are well versed in the tips, tricks and products needed to help treat facial acne. From applying spot patches to using salicylic acid face washes and clay masks, most of us have a pretty solid game plan when it comes to dealing with an unwanted pimple.

But what about those painful spots that appear on your back, shoulders and even your chest? Less discussed but actually just as common as facial acne, body acne (often referred to as "bacne") can feel like a whole new ball game, no matter how accustomed you are to dealing with facial breakouts. Body acne breakouts are often painful and deep-rooted, and since these spots are often hard to reach, they can be much more difficult to treat.

Here's how dermatologists recommend getting rid of those unwanted bacne breakouts quickly, plus how to prevent them from occurring again.

What Is Acne?

There are plenty of ways to treat body acne, but first of all, it's important to understand the basics of how it occurs in the first place. "Acne is a disorder of the pilosebaceous unit of the skin—this consists of a hair follicle and a sebaceous (or oil) gland. Acne occurs when the pilosebaceous units become blocked or inflamed," explains Dr Anjali Mahto, consultant dermatologist at Self London.

"This then leads to the formation of whiteheads, blackheads, papules and pustules." Since we have hair follicles (pores) all over our bodies, this process of blockage and inflammation can occur literally anywhere on the skin, which explains why you might experience a seemingly random spot on your neck or bum, and also larger breakouts across your back or shoulders.

What Causes Body Acne?

If you're wondering why your body acne seems to appear in certain areas, there is some logic to it. "We have the highest proportion of oil glands on our face (the T-zone area) but they can also be found in higher concentrations on the chest, back and shoulders too," explains Mahto. "As a result, we predominantly tend to find body acne in these areas."

Our genetics are one of the determining factors behind acne, since they dictate how our bodies produce oil and shed dead skin cells. But there are also external factors that can contribute to body acne breakouts. According to dermatologist Dr Zainab Laftah, friction and sweating are two of the biggest triggers of body acne flare-ups. "Sweating is increased during the summer to help regulate basal body temperature, so this can lead to blockage of pores and blemishes," she explains.

Of course, while you may experience an increase in body acne during the warmer months for this reason, if you have a lifestyle that causes you to sweat, this can also impact you throughout the year. "Exercise can cause blockage of pores from sweating and build up of oil, bacteria and dirt, thus leading to acne breakouts," Laftah adds. "Washing immediately after exercising and wearing loose, breathable clothing is recommended."

"A lot of exercise clothing is tight-fitting, which can trap bacteria and sweat on the skin, leading to the development of the C.acnes [bacteria]," agrees Mahto. "I’d always recommend changing out of sweaty exercise clothes and showering as soon as possible after your workout."

How Can You Get Rid of Body Acne?

As with all types of acne, ingredients like salicylic acid and benzoyl peroxide are recommended for treating body acne. You just might have to look for them in a slightly different product format. "Salicylic acid or benzoyl peroxide body washes are a great place to start," suggests Mahto. "But you don’t need to use a specific body wash either—you can use your facial cleanser that contains these ingredients on your body too." Mahto's top tip for preventing body acne from occurring is to ensure that you are thoroughly washing your body each day, particularly after exercise, as previously mentioned. 

In addition, Laftah recommends considering leave-on products such as serums or masks to help get rid of body acne. "Salicylic acid is my top recommendation for body acne because it's oil-soluble, so it penetrates deep into oil glands and unclogs pores," she explains. "Benzoyl peroxide, azelaic acid and retinoids are further actives that help to treat body acne and target the inflammatory process, but if the above is not effective then see your GP or dermatologist for prescription-grade treatments."

Let me tell you—I'm incredibly fussy when it comes to concealer. A fair few have come by the beauty desk over the years, but only a select make it home into my makeup bag. I want a concealer to effortlessly conceal my dark circles without settling into fine lines and creasing throughout the day. It also needs to be reasonably long-wearing and not look obvious on the skin. I also favour a hydrating, dewy formula that makes my skin look radiant and not flat. (But if I'm looking for a concealer for concealing a spot, I need a matte, high-coverage formula to do the job.) In short, most concealers don't meet my demands. That was until I tried Kosas's Revealer Concealer.

Hailey Bieber is often seen on TikTok getting ready with Kosas products, and I've spied her using the concealer on a couple of occasions. The brand also comes highly loved by US beauty fans. The brand hasn't been widely available in the UK until recently, so I finally got my hands on the concealer to try myself.

Kosas Revealer Concealer Review

I tried the Kosas Revealer Concealer in shade 3.20

This concealer is one for those who love a dewy, radiant finish to their concealers. The formula is very creamy and hydrating, thanks to the addition of moisturising hyaluronic acid, plumping peptides and caffeine, which even helps to reduce puffiness around the eye areas (win). It has a flexible doe-foot applicator which makes swiping it onto the skin really easy.

I tried the concealer here on top of my Kosas Revealer Skin Foundation, using it under my eyes, around my nose and on my chin, where I had some redness and blemishes.

The concealer is effortlessly blendable. I used a makeup sponge to pat the product into my skin, and I found that it melted into my skin really well, concealing and leaving a healthy, glowy finish. I would say it offers medium coverage, but you could definitely layer this up if you wanted more coverage in certain areas.

The dry-down isn't sticky or slippy. It stays in place and holds up well throughout the day without settling into fine lines too much. I'd liken this to Glossier's Stretch Concealer but with more coverage and staying power, making it great for under the eyes to brighten dark circles, conceal redness or blemishes or just offer extra coverage where you need it. However, I think my favourite thing about it is the glow it gives my skin; it really gives a radiant finish. So if you have dry or combination skin this would work well for you, but if you're on the oily side, you might need something for mattifying for slicker areas, but it works brilliantly around the eyes.
