In the battle between wide-leg jeans and throwback skinnies, I'm finally ready to pitch my vote, and I choose neither.

Every time I reach for my flared jeans, I'm reminded of how easy they are to make look intentional. One day, I'll pair them with a slouchy bag and pumps to give the outfit a subtle "I work in fashion" energy, and the next, I'll throw on a printed blouse and suede jacket to lean into a full '70s moment. As the season heats up, we caught up with Ratajkowski—a longtime muse of the brand—to talk through her favorite pieces, the spirit behind the campaign, and the vintage fashion she's taking with her on the road this summer.

What was it like stepping into that cool, retro road-trip vibe for the Kurt Geiger shoot? Did it bring back any fun vintage memories or travel moments?

I grew up in San Diego, and driving out to the desert was a regular part of my adolescence. It was very fun to get to do it in a much chicer, grown-up way for Kurt Geiger.

If you could only pack one item from this campaign to bring with you on a cross-country summer road trip, which would it be, and why? Are you going for something functional or something that's more of a style statement?

I'm very into the massive platforms. [They're] absolutely not functional, but I think there is something very fabulous, fun, and feminine about a heel by a pool.

Sequins, fringe, rainbow tassels, and bold prints—how do you balance wearing these bold pieces in everyday life without going over the top?

I think it's always about the classic Coco Chanel thing of taking one thing off right before you leave the house. But I say go for it. It's summer!

So many nostalgic, free-spirited styles inspired by the '70s are trending right now. What's one retro trend you're excited to see come back, and what's one you're skipping out on this summer?

I'm definitely skipping out on any fringe or feather situation. I also have to say I'm leaving behind most high-waisted pants. I'm into the color palette, though! Bright, contrasting colors and a mix of materials. I also love a big earring at the moment.

What does wearing Kurt Geiger's accessories make you feel, especially in terms of confidence and embracing life's adventures?

I think we can all get too caught up in taking fashion seriously and avoiding taking risks. I love that Kurt Geiger is encouraging us all to go for it.

If you could plan your own dream road trip inspired by this KG campaign, where would you go?

I've never done a cross-country trip and have always wanted to! … I've lived in New York for most of my life now, but I'll always be a California girl at heart, and there is nothing better than hopping in the car and heading to Mexico for a weekend. It's been years, but I love the Valle de Guadalupe. Beautiful wine country and amazing food.

For the past three years, I've lived in Laurel Canyon in Los Angeles. Once deeply entrenched in the hippie scene of the '60s and '70s, Laurel boasts a rich music history, counting Joni Mitchell, the members of The Mamas & the Papas, and Crosby, Stills & Nash as former residents. With its winding roads, close proximity to nature, and fabled days of yore, Laurel Canyon's mystique continues to attract an artistic and, might I say, very cool crowd.

My neighbors are actors, musicians, fashion designers… You name it. It should come as no surprise that I tend to see a lot of enviable looks during my trips to the local general store. Naturally, many of the trends skew '70s and boast an easygoing California sensibility, an obvious nod to the neighborhood's "peace and love" history. This is L.A. after all, so there are definitely some larger trends at play, too, like the socks-over-leggings athletic look.

Jane Birkin might as well be the unofficial Laurel Canyon style mascot and for good reason. A romantic white blouse and basket purse just work together. 

According to TikTok, "for the girls, by the girls," is one of the best ways filmmaker Sofia Coppola’s aesthetic can be described and I whole-heartedly agree. Her most recent biographical drama, Priscilla is not different Based on the 1965 memoir Elvis and Me by Priscilla Presley and Sandra Harmon, the film follows the life of Presley (portrayed by newcomer Cailee Spaeny) and her relationship with Elvis Presley (played by Euphoria star Jacob Elordi). Told from 1959 to 1972, the story captures to evolution of Priscilla Presley’s (né Beaulieu) journey from love-lorn school girl to style icon with the help of sky-high hair, plush lashes, and eye-catching winged eyeliner.

Capturing the Priscilla Look

Cut creases and winged eyeliner are staples for a number of Priscilla Presley’s most recognizable eye makeup looks. Do you have any tips and tricks on how to re-create them?

While I generally associate cut creases with the 1960s, it’s not the first thing that comes to mind when I think of Priscilla’s makeup based on the photos I’ve seen of her. What really stands out to me about her 1960s look is the bold way she wore her eyeliner. She did double wings, inverted wings on her inner corners, and straight up outlined her whole eye in black eyeliner. She wore a generous amount of black eye shadow and liner at Elvis’s request, which actually made for a pretty intense eye look rather than the typical wide-eyed babydoll 1960s look with the big cut crease.

To do a cut crease is to create a new crease line for your eyelid. All you need is black or brown eyeliner in whichever format you are the most comfortable working with pencil, cream, liquid, or my favorite, a felt tip pen like Half Magic’s award-winning Magic Flik Calligraphy Eyeliner Pen, which is included in our Limited Edition Priscilla Makeup Set. You’re going to draw a curved line above your natural crease line.

The degree of curvature that you choose is based on personal preference. The outer tail of Priscilla’s cut crease line extends toward the tail of her eyebrow, which gives a lifted, seductive, and feline effect. Now look at Twiggy. The outer tail of her cut crease line extends toward the outer corner of her eye, which gives her more of a wide-eyed baby doll, demure look. So, it’s all about the vibe you want to channel and what you want your makeup to say!

What are some of the biggest mistakes you see with modern-day takes on 1960s makeup looks? 

I don’t see any mistakes. I live for modern takes on 1960s glam and I slurp it up every time I see it. 

In what ways do you believe Priscilla’s marriage to Elvis had an influence on her style?

If what I saw in the movie really happened, Elvis groomed Priscilla from a young age to be his ideal woman. He influenced Priscilla’s style in every way possible—from deciding that her signature color was to be blue to deciding that she would avoid wearing prints and anything not formfitting, and even suggesting that she dye her hair black and wear more makeup to "bring out her eyes.”

Priscilla stayed devoted to Elvis even though he was at times cruel to her, pursued relationships with other women, and didn’t respect her needs within their marriage. Coppola’s film depicts Priscilla transforming from plain to hyper-glam to fit in with Elvis’s lifestyle and hold his ongoing attention. In the film, when she develops the strength to leave her marriage, Priscilla transitions back to her natural hair color and is shown wearing much less eye makeup. 

All of the different ways she wore her eyeliner makes me think she really added her own flair, experimentation and sense of ownership to her look, even if it initially stemmed from Elvis’s desire for how she should look. 

Do you have any personal favorite makeup looks from Priscilla over the years? 

I love the double wing with inner-wing detail and the light-pink lipstick that she wore for her wedding with Elvis. The double-wing profile is so stunning—fierce but delicate.

I'm entering my cool-girl era this spring, and it's all thanks to Daisy Jones & the Six. The Amazon Prime Video series is all anyone has been taking about in the Who What Wear office as of late, and it's not hard to see why. The show has the ability to suck anyone in, and thanks to it's gripping storyline, I've basically been able to convince everyone I know to watch the show. There's an adage that feels more relevant to this moment than ever: Those who don't know history are doomed to repeat it. Over the past few years, conversations around history have dominated the zeitgeist. We've seen the outright denial and reenvisioning of history in recent years (book banning in school libraries and the proliferation of misinformation on social media, for example) and the collective reckoning with it as a whole through equality movements. And while it may seem that these conversations only have influenced politics and, at most, pop culture, the truth is fashion has not been immune to this.

Over the past few seasons, nostalgia has significantly influenced some of the biggest fashion trends—from the Y2K aesthetic to grunge-inspired pieces. It may seem trite to compare the return of trends to the larger conversations around history, but it's not. After all, we should have learned from our mistake the first time low-rise denim became a thing! But in all seriousness, fashion has always been a visible indication of what's happening worldwide. We can glean from the runway what's happening in the headlines, the clothing on our backs can tell others what we value, and social movements can be directly linked to street style. 

Fashion and history have always been intertwined, and no one knows that more than fashion archivist Julie Ann Clauss. As a former journalist and the founder of The Wardrobe, she's got years of experience and knowledge about trends, brands, and the process of documenting fashion history. So it was only natural that we'd want to speak to her about how previous fashion eras continue to influence the present moment. Ahead, you'll hear from Clauss about her career, the importance of archival work, and which fall/winter 2022 trends are pulled straight from the past. How did you break into the fashion industry? And what has been a pivotal moment in your career thus far?

I began my career as a fashion journalist, and after working for a few years, I decided that I wanted to learn the history of fashion. I earned my MA from FIT's Fashion and Textile Studies: History, Theory, Museum Practice program. While pursuing my degree, I co-curated the Museum at FIT's exhibition Sole Desire: The Shoes of Christian Louboutin. I also cataloged Stephen Sprouse's archives in preparation for the Deitch Projects exhibition Stephen Sprouse: Rock on Mars, sponsored by Louis Vuitton. But the most pivotal moment in my career was in 2008 when Tom Ford hired me to establish and expand a comprehensive archive of his work from his tenure at Gucci, YSL, and his current eponymous label. 

You founded The Wardrobe, the first-ever archival-fashion consultancy and curation firm—what made you decide to start this company?

Upon first being hired by Tom Ford to establish a comprehensive archive of his work, I realized that no company existed to marry museum-specific expertise and market sensibility. Sure, various storage companies existed, but no commercial enterprise saw the importance of archival collections and archiving techniques at the time. I realized there had to be many designers and clients out there who had precious items that were not being stored as they should.

For those who don't know about the concept of archival work, how would you describe it? What is the difference between a historian and an archivist?

Being a fashion historian means knowing precise details and trends from previous collections/periods in fashion history and being aware of significant moments from past brands/designers in collections. Being an archivist means knowing how to properly preserve and store an item to hold and even appreciate its value. The term archivist is used loosely today, unfortunately. But before I could even be admitted to my MA program, I had to take college-level chemistry. Real archivists understand collections management is rooted in science and know that the environment is key to maintaining the quality of the pieces. It's why I opened my very own facility in Los Angeles: Wardrobe West. It's truly the "backstage" of a museum with climate control, air filtration, light control, 24-hour security, custom racking, etc., and I'm proud to say it's the first archival facility opened by a museum-trained archivist. 

What exactly is the archival process? Why is it important?

The archiving process entails photography, cataloging, asset digitization, and proper storage based on the particular construction and materials of a garment or accessory. For my company, we created our proprietary software, The Digital Archivist, to physically and digitally archive items and make it easy for our clients to browse, search, and request items from their collections while keeping them in a museum-quality space. The concept of archiving, especially with The Wardrobe, is so important because we help maximize your items' life and value and unlock hidden value by helping you leverage your collection for profit.

Since your work is about creating archives, why do you think it's important to document and maintain clothing within a larger context? How do you feel preserving clothing helps society at large?

Our services and the proper preservation of belongings are integral for many reasons—sustainable, educational, and so much more. For example, for entertainers, we archive everything our clients wear on tour, on the red carpet, and even the things that they are documented wearing in their personal lives. For individual clients, preserving their belongings helps to create true heirlooms, whether they are to be passed down to future generations or eventually used for another purpose. For designers, our work enables their design teams to utilize past collections for current inspiration, document house codes for new designers, and allow their press and marketing teams to use pieces for promotional and retail partnerships, employee onboarding, and ultimately securing a designer's legacy.

Since you've worked with some of the largest fashion brands in the industry, are there any you feel do an incredible job drawing inspiration from their archives?

I think that Mr. Ford knows who his customer is, and at the core of his designs, he sticks to his signature aesthetic while still offering exciting concepts every season. And although I can't say Saint Laurent is my client, Anthony Vaccarello (and Hedi Slimane before him) constantly pulls from the YSL archives. You will always see vintage prints, cuts, and homages to Saint Laurent's original muses appear on the runway every season but modernized.

What's one tip you suggest for our readers looking to build their own fashion archives? 

I have collected entire archives for some of my clients, and I can tell you timing is everything. I probably need to stop giving this tip because I'm just making my own job harder, but a great way to build an archive is to shop for future vintage. The life cycle of a trendy piece starts with you paying top dollar at retail. 

Are there any tips you have for readers looking to sell or shop vintage and archival fashion?

After you've invested in future vintage, the next phase of that process is being able to sell it shortly after it was really "on" for a decent recoup of your money to secondhand buyers on resale sites who still want to participate in the trend while it's fairly fresh. A few seasons later, the piece is radioactive. No one will want it because its inherent trendiness will date it quickly. That's your chance to pounce and score it for pennies on the dollar. If you hang on to it for long enough and keep it in good shape, you'll be able to sell it for a handsome profit once it is considered vintage. Regarding where to shop and sell archival pieces, eBay, Etsy, Vestiaire Collective, The RealReal, auctions, and even Instagram are great.

For the past few seasons, we've seen nostalgia play a heavy role in influencing trends on the runway—what do you think is driving this push?

Fashion has always looked to the past for inspiration. As they say, there is nothing new under the sun. We don't always realize it because fashion is a business predicated on forgetting. Its purpose is to sell you what is "new" every six months. Some examples: Many of the 1970s looks were inspired by the 1930s, and the 1980s had many elements of the 1950s. The difference that makes nostalgia so apparent in our time is the rise of social media and the internet. It used to take about 20 years for a trend to come back, but we've seen that speed up as more people have access to archives, and it's easier to educate yourself on historical trends.

When adopting "old" trends, do you have a rule of thumb for our readers to follow? 

My number one tip is to make it modern. There's nothing worse than looking like you're wearing a costume. The best way to modernize vintage garments is with current accessories. Also, if a current cut/shape of a garment comes back in style, it's worth trying to find a vintage original. Chances are it will be much more wallet friendly than a modern piece and much better constructed. That's a whole other topic—the deterioration of quality in lockstep with increased consumption over the past 50 years. It impacts the longevity of the garments themselves, which is worrying as an archivist. 

Let's talk about fall/winter 2022 trends. Do any trends stand out to you as being almost pulled straight from a different era?

1. Nipped Blazers

In modern times, our most famous association with nipped-waist jackets is from Christian Dior. He famously revived the couture with his 1947 New Look collection. The fabrics were sumptuous and expensive—a significant statement in post-war Europe, where rations were still commonplace. One of the collection's key pieces was the Bar Suit, which included a jacket with padded hips and a nipped waist. This was a departure from the more streamlined dresses of the 1920s and bias-cut, slinky pieces of the '30s. Indeed, the look harkened back to historical times when women corseted themselves to create a small waist-to-hip ratio. It was a very odd moment, as architecture and design started to look toward the future and the space race, but fashion wanted to go back in time instead.

2. Flower Adornments

The flower adornments all over the fall/winter 2022 and spring/summer 2023 collections are another trend that feels straight out of another fashion era. YSL's signature floral appliqués date back to his famous 1971 Scandal collection, which was heavily influenced by the 1940s wartime fashion. The current F/W 22 Saint Laurent collection pays homage to YSL muse Paloma Picasso, who often wore vintage 1940s clothing before it was even fashionable. (She influenced the '71 collection too.) And even the looks we saw from Philosophy di Lorenzo Serafini feel inspired by that show and time period.

3. Bows

Bows always manage to bubble back up, but one particular fall/winter 2022 collection look stood out to me as a clear indication of this trend's return: the Carolina Herrera dress seen above. This look reminds me a lot of the piece that gave Elsa Schiaparelli her start in the 1920s! Daniel Roseberry's revival of the house often explores Elsa's surrealist influences and collaboration with artists like Salvador Dalí. Still, few know the piece that gave her status was a trompe l'oeil sweater with a bow on it.

4. All Things Furry

I hate to say this, but one thing I learned from a brilliant professor I had at FIT was that, historically, fur and pockets on the runway have always been predictors of war. Perhaps it's a subliminal message of utilitarian comfort/protection in uncertain times. But with the war in Ukraine, I see her connection.

5. Brooches

Different types of jewelry come in and out of fashion all the time. When I began my career as a fashion journalist in the early '00s, brooches in unexpected ways were a big trend. There was a season where there were faux jeweled brooches on tweed Prada slingbacks, and Alber Elbaz at Lanvin was using brooch accents on his silk dresses, for example.

6. Crystal Netting

Crystal netting is another trend that's pulled straight out of the historical archives. Cristóbal Balenciaga incorporated netting into his designs in the 1960s as an ode to his childhood in Spain. His father was a sailor, and his mother sometimes took in local fishermen's nets to mend them. Nicolas Ghesquière reinterpreted this netting in his F/W 01 show for the house. Fishnet has always come in and out of fashion in different ways, but it's cool to know the personal influence it had on one of the 20th century's most famous couturiers.

7. Chokers

I am not at all surprised to see chokers on the runway since they were pure '90s, and fashion of late has a minor obsession with the '90s and '00s. Except guess what? Chokers were a thing in the '70s too. One of my all-time favorite muses, Bianca Jagger, was photographed in them, for one. But they continue to come in and out of style, proving that no trend is ever really "new."

How has learning about fashion history changed your perspective on how you approach your personal style? How do you hope this work changes other people's perspectives?

My knowledge of fashion history has reified my personal style—I love what I love! I'll always have a soft spot for the '70s, hence my collection of Ossie Clark and YSL pieces. And believe it or not, it's made me a ruthless editor of my own closet because I know the true value of things. I've never been the person to buy a knockoff to chase a trend, but learning about fashion history further underscored that for me. I'd much prefer to have fewer quality things than a closet full of fast fashion. Give me vintage any day.  

Since your career is dedicated to protecting the past, what do you hope people will take away from your work when they look back on it?

Our company tagline is "protect the past—build the future" for a good reason. We help our clients protect a very valuable asset and guide them to leveraging it. Recently, a new client told me the impetus for calling me was the realization that they were sitting on money with the pieces that were being destroyed by improper storage. I hope people will look back at me as the first person to create a business that recognized and predicted the value of fashion archives. And I hope my work inspires people to see the value in what they own, shop wiser, and care for it.

This award season, critics are all asking the same question: Is there anything Alana Haim can’t do? As the youngest member of the pop-rock trio Haim, the 30-year-old guitarist, pianist, and vocalist has been a multi-hyphenate talent for over a decade. However, her most recent step into the spotlight has officially catapulted the Los Angeles native into triple-threat territory. She’s winning audience hearts and industry praise (including a Critics Choice Award nomination) for her star turn in Paul Thomas Anderson’s film Licorice Pizza. The offbeat coming-of-age story centers on Alana Kane, a capable but rudderless 20-something woman, and the evolution of her friendship with Gary Valentine (played by Cooper Hoffman), a high school student and overly confident serial entrepreneur growing up in 1970s Los Angeles.

To say that this project was Alana’s first time in front of the camera would be a misnomer. In fact, she and her sisters worked with Anderson, a longtime family friend, on several music videos for Haim, including 2019’s "Summer Girl,” which was a complete DIY project. "Paul was in a wheelbarrow, and he had a film camera in his lap to do the tracking [shots],” she recalls when we spoke earlier this month over Zoom. "We had no budget. We actually had zero budget. We didn’t tell anyone we were doing it. We didn’t tell our label. We didn’t tell our management. We didn’t tell anyone.” Alana and her sisters have come a long way since then (they were nominated for two Grammys in 2020), yet their enthusiasm for improvising remains a core component of their craft.

Fans of Haim fortunate enough to have seen the group perform live in the pre-pandemic era know that Alana and her oldest sister, Este, are, well, hams. In between songs, the two compete to see who can make the audience laugh the most. "It’s really just me and Este’s comedy hour,” she divulges, noting that this was the most "acting” experience she had prior to Licorice Pizza. "Paul really knew that, under pressure, I could try to make people laugh, and I think that’s what really came down to me being able to know how to play this part. He let me run free.” It was this mutual level of trust that gave Alana the confidence to not only explore a new medium but to also take risks, including several memorable lines that were totally improvised. "I had so many ideas. A lot of them made it into the movie, which is shocking. I mean, ‘What does your penis look like?’ was an improv,” she shares. Another memorable line, "You’re talking about pinball machines, and I’m a politician,” is also an Alana Haim original. 

Alana’s on-screen presence is so comfortable that many viewers will be shocked to learn that she did very little to prepare for this leading role. However, that’s not an indication of her innate work ethic. "I have been practicing my guitar since I was 9,” she explains. "I put in my 10,000 hours working, playing guitar, and also playing shows. So I feel very comfortable in that sense.” But when it came to acting, something totally new, Alana was actually discouraged by Anderson from taking professional lessons. "Paul really just guided me through this thing. Every day, I’d be like, ‘You know, I’ve never done this before,’ and he’d be like, ‘I know.’ And then we would continue filming, but I was constantly asking if I was going to get fired,” she says.

In reality, Alana had done this before. Or at least, many scenes must have felt familiar. Not only is her character in Licorice Pizza named Alana, but her entire family also appears at various points throughout the film. A scene that many will find memorable was inspired by a real-life holiday meal at home. "My middle sister had brought a boyfriend to Passover years ago (they’re not together anymore), which became kind of like a tale. Every time we’re making fun of Danielle, we’ll be like, ‘Remember that time you brought an atheist to Passover dinner?’ So that scenario was true—there wasn’t that much acting since we had a lot of experience with the family vibe,” explains Alana. Notably, her father, Moti, also slings a few perfectly timed zingers. "We could not stop laughing because he had no script. He didn’t have any set lines and was just so funny without trying,” she says. "Seeing the movie with a crowd of people and watching how much joy my dad is bringing the audience just warms my heart. It’s given him so much confidence and also just made me laugh so hard, so it was great. It was lovely.”

In addition to honing her improvisational acting style, Alana learned how to drive a vintage U-Haul truck, set up a waterbed, and was responsible for doing her own hair and makeup while on set. Yep, she does her own stunts! Given that Licorice Pizza takes place in the San Fernando Valley in 1973 (and, unlike the video for "Summer Girl,” had a sizeable budget), this was a huge surprise and absolute delight. While learning to drive a huge truck required at least a few hours of practice, Alana’s experience growing up in the valley was all she needed to cultivate her character’s look. "Regardless if it’s in the ’70s or in modern times, the valley heat has never changed,” explains Alana. "Anytime I wanted to impress a dude, I would put makeup on, but it would honestly work against me because it would just melt off.” So while the "less is more” approach can be unforgiving on-screen, it was both a practical choice and a reflection of ’70s-era beauty norms in Southern California. "If you google ‘teenagers in the ’70s’ and ‘the valley,’ you’ll see that no one is wearing makeup. Everyone is embracing bare skin because there actually wasn’t that much you could do, again, because of the heat,” she shares.

Both Anderson and Alana agreed that DIY makeup and hair would help to achieve the right aesthetic for the era. "The whole philosophy behind the hair and makeup of the movie was that you gotta be truthful to the time and be truthful to the valley. For my vanity, of course, I wanted to look cute,” she says. "But sometimes, I look insane because when you put makeup on in the valley and it sweats off, that’s what it looks like, so I was being very truthful to the valley.” Again, Alana is nothing if not genuine. "I don’t have perfect skin. I have a full-blown Zoom beauty filter on my face right now,” she confesses with her signature smirk. "It was so funny. After one of the screenings, someone came up to me and asked, ‘So did they put zits on your face, or was that just your skin?’ And I was like, ‘Oh no, kind sir. That is just my face.’ And that’s okay!”

So what’s up next for the musician, actor, makeup artist, and truck driver? Celebrating, for starters. The singer and her sisters cheekily announced that Haim would be going back on tour in 2022 in an Instagram video that included a present-day verse of Adam Sandler’s "Hanukkah Song” (see: Omicronukkah), which Sandler himself praised. Last week, she attended a birthday celebration with close friend and fellow Sagittarius Taylor Swift. And finally, she’ll be ending the year on a high note with the wide release of Licorice Pizza, in theaters everywhere on December 25.

After ringing in the New Year, Alana and her co-stars are headed back into the press gauntlet for award season. And if her Licorice Pizza premiere look (a gorgeous Loewe dress styled by Rebecca Grice with super-shiny hair by Mara Roszak) is any indication, Alana Haim is ready for her close-up—no filter needed.

Next, I Did My Research—These Are the 6 Biggest Winter 2021 Shoe Trends

We know all of the words, and we know what they mean. "Respect,” the 1965 hit single from the queen of soul, Aretha Franklin, wields impressive staying power in the collective conscious—so much so that in the three years since Franklin’s passing at age 76, there have been numerous tributes, celebrations, and critical examinations of her life. 

Most recently, the biopic Respect has brought the magic of Ms. Franklin back to the forefront. Starring the fantastic Jennifer Hudson, this film chronicles the singer’s life from childhood as she launches into career stardom, battling inner and outer demons and evolving along the way. Though her songs can be queued up at a moment’s notice (they continue to resonate with everyone from Boomers to Gen Zers), Hudson and Tony Award–winning costume designer Clint Ramos propel Franklin’s unique sense of style into the spotlight in this standout film.

As he has a background in live theater, this feature film (which was recorded prior to the COVID-19 pandemic and the shuttering of Broadway) was a first for Ramos. An epic undertaking, Respect features a large cast, including famous faces from the music industry, the Civil Rights era, and re-creations of legendary performances. Fortunately, the four-decade time span combined with the theatrical nature of Franklin’s concerts was an appropriate challenge for Ramos, whose keen eye created costumes that not only suited the historical time and place but that also celebrated both divas—Franklin and Hudson—on-screen. 

How was designing costumes for a film different from working in live theater? 

Actually, there are a lot more similarities than differences. Costume design isn’t necessarily about fashion; it’s more really about character and storytelling. The theater has trained me to really look at it that way, so before any sort of lifestyle or glamour, you need to have an understanding of human beings. 

There really wasn’t any difference, except in the sense of scale. [For Respect] we had these massive scenes with background actors—churches that were filled with hundreds of people and concerts at Madison Square Garden with over 1000 people to dress. It was really just about preparing myself for what that kind of scale required in terms of support and planning.

What did you enjoy most about designing for a young woman and performer in the ’60s and ’70s who was known for her unique sense of style?

What sets Aretha apart from her contemporaries is that she was not a mannequin. She was not subject to fashion on fashion’s terms and literally used clothing to express who she was and what her politics were. 

There were many moments in her life that she actually took the fashion industry to task, even before we had a consciousness about size inclusivity. In the ’70s and ’80s, she called out brands like Calvin Klein and Versace and literally told them that they needed to make bigger dresses. It was important for me to show that this was a woman who actually used clothing, fashion, and appearance to telegraph who she was and what she valued.

In her younger years, before she has her first taste of fame, Franklin frequently wears red, while her sisters wear green and yellow. What were you looking to convey with this repeated color palette? 

Scarlet is either the color of bravery or the color of shame. We first locate that color through her mother, who was independent, who freed herself from an abusive marriage. So while red plays a really important role in the character’s trajectory, so does white, which reflects a yearning for innocence lost. It’s using color psychology to convey what Aretha has been through and the challenges she faced at a very young age.

How much did you reference real events like the Madison Square Garden concert and the Amazing Grace documentary? Was it more important to stay true to what was documented, or did you take some liberties there to make it fit the style of the film?

With regards to those iconic scenes, we wanted to make sure that the costumes reflected the event but also adjusted them to suit Jennifer [Hudson] and fit with the particular color trajectory of the film. For instance, in the MSG scene, I adjusted the fabric and lowered where the dress seams hit on the body. I wanted to show off the iridescence of the material because we filmed the concert scene as a theater in the round, and I wanted her to be this aurora borealis, this star in the middle of this dark cloud of people. 

For the Amazing Grace dress, the documentary came out shortly before we started to film, and there were a lot of people who had seen it, so it was important that we didn’t veer too much away from reality. Instead of creating something totally new, I tweaked the proportions of the caftan and created a print of my own design to get the color a little bit closer to green rather than blue. That looked better with the lighting in the church and Jennifer’s skin tone. The overall look is updated but doesn't stray too much from the original.

In the ’70s, Franklin gets more involved with the Civil Rights Movement from her own perspective and changes her style, embracing her natural hair and introducing leopard print into her wardrobe, which later becomes a signature. What did you make of this shift?

It’s period appropriate, but at the same time, it captures the moment that Aretha had come into this era of ferocity and rage. I had an image of her being trapped in a cage, so I wanted to invoke that restlessness and tap into the emotional core of those particular scenes. In terms of her personal life, it seems like Aretha felt more and more out of control as she was gaining control. To me, that moment spoke to that kind of animalistic sensibility and style that she adopts.

There were so many spectacular looks in the film, both inspired by real life and created especially for Jennifer Hudson. What was your favorite to design?

I love all of the looks that she had, from the high highs to the low lows, but the slip that she wears when she hallucinates her mother is really special. It’s nothing extraordinary, but it is where I feel like a costume really helps an actor get into a particular scene. I scoured the internet and the country for that slip, and when I found it, I knew it was the perfect thing. It really showed her vulnerability. And as far as Jennifer was concerned, she was really egoless about it to go there and be really raw and vulnerable in order to convey that state of dread.

Other than Franklin, did you have a favorite character to dress?

The conversations that I had with Mary J. Blige during her fittings were spectacular. I love her character [singer Dinah Washington] because being a woman, particularly a Black woman at that time, everything about the way she dressed was really aspirational. There's a sense that Dinah was the queen, right? She never took the risk of being underdressed—she always took the risk of being overdressed. I love how theatrical that was. Her looks really tapped into the theater of it all, a theater that’s created by fashion. So while the general outfits were based on what Dinah really wore, those costumes were a lot of fun to conjure up.

Ten minutes into Halston, Netflix's latest must-watch series, I knew I was going to love it. The '70s fashion! The New York backdrop! Ewan McGregor in a patent trench coat! I was long overdue an escapist TV fashion moment (The Queen's Gambit feels like a long time ago), and this well and truly satisfied that craving. Set in New York in the 1970s and '80s, the series centres around the life and era-defining work of fashion designer Roy Halston Frowick, aka Halston, who is played by Ewan McGregor, and his struggle to steer his eponymous fashion empire.

Costume designer Jeriana San Juan has done an incredible job at capturing the high-octane glamour and sensuality that is at the heart of not only Halston's designs but also the decade itself. As a '70s fashion fan, I found it to be a real visual treat. From the sequin-clad costumes of Halston's close friend Liza Minnelli and the nonchalant tailoring of model Elsa Peretti to the liquid silk of the brand's runway gowns and the aviator-sunglasses-and-patent-coat cool of Halston himself. It's honestly the chicest thing on TV right now.

Halston Limited, Halston Luggage, Halston Perfume—the 1970s were all about Halston, the eponymous line, numerous licensing deals, and, of course, the visionary designer himself. Studio 54 was the place to be, and cocaine was the thing to do as Halston, a milliner whose career took off thanks to the pillbox hat Jacqueline Kennedy wore to JFK’s inauguration, pivoted to embrace the modern woman with both ready-to-wear and made-to-order fashion collections.

Produced by Ryan Murphy of American Horror Story and Hollywood renown, this five-episode miniseries has the intense character development, biting dialogue, beautiful scenery, and, of course, gorgeous costumes that one has come to expect from the producer. However, much like the man himself, Ewan McGregor’s Halston triumphs due in large part to support from a powerful cast of characters portrayed by several famous faces.

Rebecca Dayan is one such face—the multitalented artist who embodies the role of the iconic jewelry designer and Halston muse Elsa Peretti. While the physical resemblance between Dayan and Peretti is uncanny—both raven-haired beauties began their careers as models—it is their shared creative spirit that brings the character to life. Although Dayan hails from the South of France, her Italian accent rings true to Peretti’s Florentine roots. Rants and raves are particularly memorable due in part to the "donna forte” artist that Dayan channels. 

Notably, Peretti outlived many of her contemporaries by 30 years, passing away just a few weeks ago at 80 years old. Given the timeliness of this series, we were eager to catch up with Dayan and learn more about Peretti’s role in the Halston era, as well as her legacy as one of the most esteemed jewelry designers of her time. 

Although we’re discussing Halston’s glamorous heyday of the 1970s and ’80s, Zooming with Dayan in 2021 looks decidedly different than the luxe sets of Netflix’s latest fashion-focused series. Sitting on the couch in her apartment in NYC, Dayan greets me over the screen with a shy smile and a certain je ne sais quoi—exuding that elusive, seemingly effortless French style in a gray V-neck cashmere sweater, minimalist jewelry, and comfortable trousers.

I’m quick to ask for any French-girl fashion or beauty tips, but Dayan is even quicker to wave me off. "French-girl style is just a myth, you know? But it has sold a lot of lipstick,” she quips. 

Before diving into her role as Peretti, I ask the multifaceted artist (in addition to modeling, Dayan has studied fine art and design and is also a producer) what first attracted her to the world of film. "I remember watching the movie After Hours with my mom. I’ve seen it so many times now, but that is what inspired me to explore the creativity of movie-making.”

The 1985 black comedy by Martin Scorsese features a gritty New York City that stands in stark contrast to the world in which Dayan has been immersed since filming for Halston began in 2019, but then again, NYC has always been a home for artists. 

Dayan and Peretti were both drawn to the city in their 20s, but interestingly, it was challenging for Dayan to find primary source materials about Peretti’s life until after her 50s. "Initially, I didn’t know a lot about Elsa, but I was inspired by her as a creative, powerful, independent woman,” Dayan remarks. "There were tons of information, including video and interviews about Halston, Victor Hugo, and other artists from that era, but not a lot about Elsa,” she recalls. "I had to imagine what she would have been like in her 20s, how she would have moved, and danced.”

It is this appreciation for movement that linked Peretti and Halston, particularly in their design sensibilities. Whereas Halston’s understanding of fabric, color, and texture set the tone for women’s fashion of the decade, Peretti embraced forms found in nature, as seen in her iconic bone cuff for Tiffany & Co. as well as the curved fragrance bottle she designed for Halston’s first perfume.

Interestingly, both Halston’s and Peretti’s design aesthetics could easily be worn today. "I loved all of the dresses,” says Dayan. "But especially the cashmere cardigan and dress that Elsa wears at the airport. I would wear that right now.” We also gush over the bone cuff, which Tiffany’s still sells. "It just feels special,” she says. "It’s not just how it looks but how it feels on the body.” Peretti’s designs are truly timeless—there’s a blink-and-you’ll-miss-it moment where Dayan wears an original Elsa Peretti for Tiffany’s mesh bra under a red suit—and still totally wearable in the 21st century.

However, amid the glitz and glamor of the disco era, the burgeoning AIDS crisis infiltrated the scene, decimating the creative community in which Peretti thrived. "It was a very dark time where people would be out at a party, at Studio 54, and then people just stopped showing up. They contracted the virus and died,” Dayan explains. Halston himself was diagnosed in the late ’80s and succumbed to the disease in 1990.

At the end of the series, a title card appears and notes that Halston’s closest friends, Peretti and Liza Minnelli, reunited to hold an event to celebrate the designer’s life. Given Peretti’s recent passing, I ask Dayan how she thinks the icon would like to be remembered by her friends and fans. "It’s hard to say, but I think Elsa would like to be remembered first and foremost as an artist,” she muses. "Hopefully, Tiffany will reissue some of her pieces since they are timeless and classic.”

As for Dayan, I ask what’s next on her agenda as we prepare to enter a post-COVID world. "I’m just excited to get back out there and continue to work,” she says. Ever the artist, she’s already writing a feature film and looking to find distribution for Born Free, a documentary about the maternal health crisis in America that she helped to produce as the first project funded by her nonprofit organization, The Mother Lovers. From model muse to iconic artist, Dayan, much like Peretti, has clearly found her medium. 

All five episodes of Halston will be available on Netflix beginning May 14.

Gucci S/S 20 collection

Patchwork denim will always have a nostalgic charm to me. The splicing of fabrics and intentional scruffiness makes it feel like a project I'd have taken on in week five of summer holidays after watching one too many episodes of That '70s Show. However, this humble denim trend has, against all odds, been slowly making its way into luxury collections. In 2020, Celine brought us the patchwork button-front miniskirt, Gucci created an epic blazer pieced together with numerous swatches and, most recently, Victoria Beckham has brought us two-tone flared jeans.

All patchwork denim tends to have a '70s sensibility, playing with silhouettes such as flares and wide-leg jumpsuits, which were all popular in that decade. Thanks to the DIY element, this is a trend that really lends itself to upcycling and reusing fabrics, and Fanfare is one label that uses offcuts from designer rugs to add patches to jeans, stopping them from being sent to landfill. Welcome to Firefly Lane! The year is… well, that depends on the episode. Netflix’s enchanting adaptation of the Firefly Lane books by Kristin Hannah stars Katherine Heigl and Sarah Chalke as two lifelong best friends in a 10-episode first season that chronicles over five decades of family, relationships, and of course, fashion. Fans of the movie Now and Then (1995) will delight in the throwback vibes of the music, time-hopping narrative, and eerily on-point costumes of the main characters throughout the ’70s, ’80s, and ’00s. To confess that I binge-watched the entire show in just two days should come as no surprise. 

As fashion journalist Elizabeth Holmes regularly remarks, I had "so many thoughts.” Luckily, costume designer Allisa Swanson had all of the answers (plus a few pro tips), making me appreciate the depth of Firefly Lane and its characters even more. Without spoiling any of the roller-coaster plotlines, Swanson provided incredible insight into what it takes to outfit an entire cast (background actors included) in authentic vintage fashion, and also how the tiniest details are critical when creating a signature style that spans decades.

You’ve been a professional costume designer for over 20 years, so what excited you about Firefly Lane?

I loved the idea [of a show that spans multiple decades] because I like projects that challenge me and knew this would be a big one. The ’70s were a fun time, in general, and the ’80s is a fabulous decade for costumes. The 2000s were not our greatest period of time for clothes, but it is so different than how we dress today… I was really excited to undertake something that flexed my design skills so broadly.

Were some decades more difficult to design for than others? 

Finding kids' clothes—particularly for the early ’60s scenes—was difficult. For the scene with baby Shawn, I had a local lady in Vancouver knit those infant onesies for us because there was nothing around from the early ’60s that we could buy that would look period-appropriate for a one-year-old. I found reference photos from the early ’60s as to what babies would wear, so we sent the photos and some yarn, and she knit those for us. 

For looks from the ’70s onward, I went on a huge thrift store shopping spree right at the beginning of prep. My assistant and I hit every small town within a five-hour drive of where we lived and visited every thrift store we could. We filled up my minivan and a half-ton truck over four days. We were able to find authentic items from the ’70s, ’80s, and 2000s because people have been cleaning out their closets and getting rid of things they have been holding onto for 20-plus years. There were even a few stores in the small towns that we had relationships with, and every time they got new stock, we would do a video conference (this was pre-COVID) and they would send us the stuff we liked.

What references did you draw from to create the overall look and feel for each decade? 

I used a lot of catalogs from the ’70s and ’80s, especially Sears catalogs because that’s what everyday people wore. I had quite a few magazines from the ’80s in my collection, but that was high fashion, which our girls weren’t quite able to afford even if they aspired to it. 

I also have a huge collection of patterns from the ’70s and the ’80s, some of which belonged to my grandmother, and some were what I was making in the ’80s. We referenced a lot of these patterns to get a feel for the way a blazer was cut differently than it would be cut today, or how princess seams would fit in different spots. 

And, of course, the internet is always helpful. Pinterest is one of my favorite websites of all time, so I spent a lot of time creating boards on my personal account. I had ’70s Kate, ’70s Tully, etc. Then I had general ’70s and ’80s boards. Any time a new character came up, I would create a new Pinterest board, even for minor characters and background actors. 

When it came time to actually do the mood board for specific characters, I read the book before and highlighted it and dog-eared it and took notes, using that for cues along with the script to put character profiles together. Kate is shy and retiring and smart, and ambitious but ambitious in her own way for her own life. Tully, who was larger than life from the very beginning, is always striving for more and to be better. Starting with those character attributes, I built their mood boards, which included overarching color pallets. Kate in the ’80s was all about pastels. Tully was very bright and jewel-toned. Kate was always softer, as the grounding maternal one. Everything had a coziness to her, even when she was at work.

Who were some real-life references or sources of inspiration for Tully and Kate? 

Brooke Shields was a big icon that I channeled for both of their college looks. The fun thing about the ’80s was that it’s not just one look from the beginning to the end. The ’80s had so many different trends that if we were doing ’82 it had to look different than what we were doing in ’87. Brooke Shields embodied the early ’80s whereas Cindy Crawford was my muse for the late ’80s scenes. 

Also, Oprah was someone I looked to for Tully’s style in the 2000s since that was when the Oprah Winfrey Show was at its peak. Oprah has always been very elegant, so I looked to re-create that for Tully. A lot of the icons of the early 2000s, like Paris Hilton, were too young for Tully. She’s still a 40-year-old woman, so she’s not going to run around with her midriff showing. Jennifer Aniston was a big source of inspiration for 2000s Kate. 

What was your favorite decade to style Tully? What about Kate? 

I especially loved the ’80s as a whole, since it changes so much within the decade. All of the characters had a really cool dressy ’80s look with big hair and shoulder pads. In the ’80s everyone was done. You left the house dressed up in a look—there was so much personality. You could look completely different than the person you were standing next to and yet you were appropriately dressed. 

I really loved all of the costumes at the late-’80s wedding. Tully’s purple-and-black suit was one of the ones that we found in a thrift store. With a little bit of tweaking, very minor alterations it fit. We didn’t have to do anything to it—it was perfect and fit Katherine Heigl like a glove.

We modeled Kate and the other bridesmaids’ dresses after a bridesmaids dress I actually wore in 1987 with a boned bodice and basque waist that dips in front and exaggerated sleeves. We needed so many yards of the pink raw silk that we had to preorder it and it came straight from the factory in India. It’s just beautiful fabric.

For the men, Richard Gere was a major influence, as well as popular movies of the time like Ferris Bueller’s Day Off and Back to the Future. Interestingly enough, menswear doesn’t change the way womenswear does. There are subtle differences, like in the ’80s waists were higher and shirts were tucked into pegged and cuffed jeans.

In the 2000s, everyone was wearing their pants very low on the hip and super baggy. All the men in the show, particularly in the 2000s, look like they’re in dad’s clothes. Everything is too big. It was actually really hard to make the men look sexy in the 2000s when needed them to and yet keep to the fashion of the day.

What are your tips for vintage shopping or thrifting for pieces from a particular era? Were there any specific brands you looked for? 

My approach was more about achieving the overall style of the decade. There were so many people to dress from head to toe that shopping for a specific brand wasn’t a priority. I thought when we did our thrifting it would just be for background and concepts, but we found such good-quality pieces that a lot of the stuff we thrifted was actually worn in the show. In the trailer, Tully wears a beautiful black knit jumpsuit with the pearl neckline from the ’80s. We found that at a thrift store and it was in fantastic shape.

High-waisted jeans were coming back when we started shooting, so we’d shop for pants in a couple sizes higher in order to get a good high waist and then take it in at the waist and leave the legs bigger. Overall, the jeans were a mix of vintage pieces and some from today’s stores, many augmented to fit the girls in the waist properly.

Let’s talk about accessories. Kate’s glasses obviously evolve throughout the year, which as a glasses-wearer I love. How did you source those frames? 

Glasses generally fall under the props department, but because fashion was so important, we would decide on them together. First, the actress would come in for her fitting, we’d get her looks going, and then about a couple looks in, props would come in with the glasses and together and we’d pick our top two frames. If I didn’t think a pair of glasses went with Kate’s overall look, we didn’t let Sarah try them on at all.

Also, jewelry is prevalent, particularly for Tully. Can you tell me about working with Jewels for Hope? 

The ’80s specifically were jewel-centric—everything was big and oversize and everybody wore jewelry every day. Even in the 2000s, jewelry was a big part of completing an outfit. When we reach the 2000s in the show, Tully has a lot of money, so her jewelry had to look luxe and expensive. Tully is never going to go out and not look her best, and that includes the jewelry that is the frame for our faces. 

During filming, we shot two episodes at a time, which is called blocked shooting. Before each block started I would take at least an hour to go through Tully’s lineup and plan the jewelry that went with each outfit. It could take hours depending on how many changes she had. There were a few episodes where both Kate and Tully would have almost 40 changes over two episodes between the ’80s and 2000s. 

Sourcing the jewelry was also fun. I will call up Valerie Guerrero of The Artisan Group, who works with independent artists around the globe, and she will share what I am doing: "Firefly Lane for Netflix needs ’70s era rings, ’80s earrings, and big statement jewelry for the early 2000s.” In this case, I got the job two months before we started to prep, so I literally called her the next day and said "I’m doing a show that spans three decades. What do you have?”

All of the artisans from The Artisan Group collective, including Jewels for Hope, send handwritten notes about the piece of jewelry, how they made it, and where it comes from. I took all of the notes to set, and whenever we’d use a piece specifically from the artisans, we would write down who it went on and what episode it went in, so we could let Valerie know when they could see their work on screen. It’s a nice way for local artisans who hand-make everything to get the exposure that they wouldn’t normally get.

Once the episode comes out I’ll tweet or put it on Instagram and tag them. I’ve been using that service now since 2015 and I love it. I used it on The Hundreds and Once Upon a Time, and every piece they sent me got into the show on Firefly Lane. Every artist who made something for me got featured. All of the jewelry was so unique and special. I hope the viewers enjoy it as much as I did!

It's true: What comes around tends to go back around eventually. Since we know that fashion is cyclical in nature, it should come as no surprise when we see trends resurrect themselves from the past—sometimes from decades in the past. Designers are always revisiting the archives in order to reinvent the wheel for the seasons to come, fixating on one decade or period of time before moving onto the next. In the past several years alone, we've cycled through '70s, '80s and '90s fashion trends, cherry-picking which silhouettes and motifs to bring into the present-day.

The great thing about vintage clothing is that if you hold onto an item for long enough, you just might see it come back into the style spotlight again. Or, like I did, you can take to raiding the wardrobes of your parents and grandma to borrow the original versions and source even more from vintage stores (coincidentally also the most sustainable way to shop). Once such vintage retailer is The RealReal, and its head of women's clothing, Sasha Skoda, is sharing the exact trends from these past three decades that are selling better than any others right now. From the '70s…

Scarves: According to the data that Skoda shared, searches for scarves are up a whopping 162% and that the resale value is also on the rise, correlating with the current overall '70s trend. We've seen fashion girls styling silk scarves in creative ways, from tying them up "babushka" style over their heads to knotting them around their neck and even wearing them as a DIY crop top.

Knee-High Boots: Knee-high boots blew up this past autumn and winter, rivalling ankle boots as the go-to boot silhouette. Skoda confirmed their popularity by informing us that interest in them has increased by 88% year over year.

Tartan and Plaid: We'd argue that some version of check print and plaid is always "in," and right now, it's '70s-inspired tartan, which we've seen on everything from preppy pleated skirts to sophisticated trousers.

From the '80s…

Puffy Sleeves: No surprise here. Puff sleeves are an '80s trend we've definitely got behind, as it's just a pure delight to wear and pretty much always looks good, whether you splurge or save on it. Clearly, we're not alone here, since searches for this trend are up by 338%.

Metallic: Though it hasn't gotten as much love as some other '80s styles, metallics are still definitely a thing right now. Skoda shared that they're earning 80% more interest this year, and when you look at the iridescent bags and party dresses at Paco Rabanne and Attico, it's not hard to see why.

From the '90s…

Baguette Bags: We have iconic designer bags like Fendi's Zucca Baguette and Prada's Nylon shoulder bag to thank for this (wildly popular) revival. Demand for those two exact bags has skyrocketed, plunging all cropped shoulder bags into the spotlight with them.

Mules: We love it when a trend is as popular as it is easy to wear, and mules are just that. The '90s shoes go with everything from skirts to jeans, making them the ultimate wardrobe staple. No surprise, then, why mules, in general, are 145% more favourable than they were last year.

The Trends

Topping their list of must-buy vintage items are all things cargo. While cargo pants are popping as a major spring 2022 trend, Aberizk and Xavier point to oversize parachute pants, roomy boyfriend pants, and cargo skirts as the items to look for when hunting for secondhand gems. These can be worn baggy as a low-rise style as styled on the store's Instagram feed @shop_aberizk or belted at the waist.

We've seen "dad" jackets in all shapes and sizes lately, so it should come as no surprise why they pointed to these leather racer jackets as the next big outerwear trend to know. Inspired by Italian streetwear style, they feature a single-button collar with a boxy, oversize fit, and according to Aberizk, the colored leather options are personal favorites.

With all things Y2K and late '90s trending hard, chunky platform shoes—from boots to oxfords—are officially "it." While plenty of new options exist in the market currently, Aberizk and Xavier are all about sourcing original versions when buying vintage.

Call it the Miu Miu effect, but miniskirts are top of mind for Aberizk and Xavier. Pleated school girl–inspired skirts, denim minis, and leather miniskirts are all the top styles on their radar.

Another key vintage theme they pointed out? Extra-fuzzy knits. "Sweaters or sweater-vests with lots of texture from the yarns or different gauge knits are big on our radar. Cashmere or mohair blends are always great," they shared.

Naturally, it wouldn't be a story about reviving older trends if we didn't cover a hotly-debated one: early-aughts denim. Whether it be a patchwork style, low-rise fit, or flared shape, the team at Aberizk confirmed our suspicions that we're headed towards a complete Y2K denim takeover.

There's no denying that the '90s was a real golden age for movies. I can only talk for myself, but as a teenager during that time, there were quite a few films that had an impact on me. Of course, a lot to do with that is whether Leonardo di Caprio was starring, but there was also another reason why I still love these films today: the fashion. While Clueless is always the most often referred to there are so many other movies that should be celebrated too.

Right now, thanks to our continuing obsession with nostalgia and the '90s being a major trend for spring/summer 2020 (not to mention our love of '80s and '70s fashion), I'm turning to those classic movies more and more for wardrobe inspiration. Were you even a teenage girl in the '90s if you didn't do "light as a feather, stiff as a board" with your mates at a sleepover? The Craft is one of those films that will remain as one of my favourites of all time. While levitation attempts might have been a dud, the goth-meets-school-girl is one I will always try to replicate. Cardigans worn over white shirts is what I'm loving here. 

Kat in 10 Things I Hate About You was so refreshing. She didn't try to be popular—she didn't care. Her outfits were a mix of hoodies, long-sleeved T-shirts and combat trousers. A look I happily wear today. 

Sarah Michelle Gellar's day job might have meant wearing leather to fight off vampires (Buffy forever), she also starred in one of the coolest films during that era: Cruel Intentions. As the manipulative Kathryn, she was all about revealing slips and figure-hugging dresses. Sassy. 

I almost forgot about this film, but how could I? While Now and Then film was set in the '90s, there are flashbacks to the '70s. Christina Ricci's character Roberta was the tomboy and I loved her for it. No frilly dresses, but T-shirts and flared jeans.

There's is no denying that when Jenny gets older (played by the incomparable Robin Wright), she had an incredible wardrobe. 

When it comes to stage outfits, Whitney Houston's Rachel in The Bodyguard wins. I'll be channelling her look in a cape this coming autumn/winter. 

Babydoll dresses paired with platforms is basically all I wanted to wear during the '90s. Now, while I might have no where to go out wearing this at the moment, perhaps it's worth thinking about for the future party season. 

Despite the gothic undertones it was Winona Ryder's white ethereal dress that really caught my eye. Off-the-shoulder and long-sleeved with the buttons down the front? Yes please. 

Honestly, it was a tribute to Courteney Cox's acting that we didn't constantly think, "Wait—that's Monica!" the whole time we were watching Scream. Her bold outfits were always a highlight too, especially this fluoro jacket. 

The hair! The neck-tie! The jacket! I love everything about this look. 

This shirt is what started by love affair with printed men's shirts. The modern re-imagining of Romeo and Juliet by Baz Luhrmann gave us this incredible look of part surfer bum, part preppy boy. And I haven't been able to get it out of my head since. 

Next up, the biggest spring/summer 2020 fashion trends you need to know. 

I'm a huge fan of '70s fashion. The era created a host of trends that still stand up today, whether you realize they're from that time or not. Think of our current obsession with bright over-the-knee boots, folk-inspired printed dresses, velvet, corduroy, boho blouses, midi skirts, and so on. While the '70s sweep over the runways every couple of seasons, there's always a hint of it on the streets if you look closely.

Think of the iconic designer names that were indelibly marked into history during this decade, like Yves Saint Laurent, Karl Lagerfeld, and Diane von Furstenberg. It was also a period where mass-market, trend-driven fashion was more readily available. Barbara Hulanicki's Biba kick-started the idea in London a decade earlier alongside boutiques like Bus Stop, and cool, connected girls were able to switch up their looks more readily, which likely led to the 1001 aesthetics and key pieces that came out of this electric time.

This glamorous period also produced a slew of unforgettable, high-octane, high-profile style icons. Think Farrah Fawcett, Grace Jones, Bianca Jagger, Diana Ross, Cher, and Debbie Harry. Their fabulousness was met in equal parts by the casual '70s crew: Ali MacGraw, Diane Keaton, Jane Birkin, and company repped the kind of '70s style that feels more like brunch in NYC rather than wild nights at Studio 54. Style Notes: Jackie O's '70s style (particularly on this holiday in Capri) is for all the minimalists out there. I love the simple vacay look topped off with a headscarf—a styling trick we've noticed recently on Instagram.

Style Notes: We noticed recently that much of Cher's '70s and '80s style looks strikingly similar to that of Bella Hadid's 2017 wardrobe, but let's not stop there. Cher's easy, breezy co-ord pictured here looks like it's about to step onto the shop floor of Reformation, right?

Style Notes: Not only are these '70s boots the right kind of pull-on, mid-heel style to fit into today's current OTK demands, but they're also in white, making them doubly covetable.

Style Notes: The power of the denim dress lives on. Whether you wear yours short and cheeky with matching platforms like this '70s model did or you decide to opt for something more demure, the simple usage of this humble fabric can make any frock seem easier to wear.

Style Notes: A particularly hot ticket for summer is the idea of wearing one color (almost any color) head to toe with laser focus. This '70s photo shoot could be a recent snap from Paris Fashion Week, and we're suddenly feeling sage green as an option on the days we aren't doing red.

Style Notes: The '70s wouldn't be anything without freedom-fighting hippies, and it just so happens that Jane Fonda was part of the club. Here, she's wearing a Thea Porter dress—this designer's seminal creations are still adored by boho girls like Kate Moss today.

Style Notes: Jane Birkin spent much of the '70s not really wearing much clothing at all, but she did always have her trusty basket bag nearby. Over the past few summers, we've seen these traditional woven holdalls make their way back into fashion—don't be surprised if they continue to reign this year.

Style Notes: Every time designers present their summer collections, you can bet safari references will be present—it all started, of course, with Yves Saint Laurent. Here, his muse, Betty Catroux, models the famous safari dress in 1969—a look that would rule during the first part of the following decade.

Style Notes: Where would today's best-accessorized ladies be without scarves? Nowhere, that's where. They were very popular in the '70s, topping off many a look, including this Dior outfit.

Style Notes: Marisa Berenson's silky pajama tunic, culottes, and matching scarf look precisely like pieces we'd wear out for a party night. Paired with gold sandals and a shoulder-robed coat, this glam look hasn't dated from when it was captured in 1974.

Style Notes: Elizabeth Taylor looked fabulous throughout her lifetime, but the 1970s were a particularly OTT time for her (and then-partner Richard Burton). Here we have a spectacular lesson in making an entrance: Wear a bright-pink gown with excess beading, a truckload of diamonds and pearls, and then top things off with a matching turban.

It seems as though we're going through a throwback phase in fashion right now, whether it's the neat cardigans of the '50s, the miniskirts of the '60s, the big shoulders of the '80s or the slip dresses of the '90s. But for me, the '70s has to be the most exciting decade when it comes to style, and I will always be the first to jump on a flared hemline or pointed collar. 

If Instagram is anything to go by, it's specifically the dresses from this decade that are piquing our interest this autumn, with their calf-grazing length, long sleeves and frou-frou necklines. The '70s dress continues this summer's penchant for free-flowing, full-coverage frocks, yet this iteration has a more polished finish compared to the bohemian smocks, making it ideal for both work and weddings. 

While this is a retro look that both high-street and high-end brands have skillfully repurposed for 2019, you also can't beat the real deal. Personally, I'll be traipsing 'round London's vintage stores this October in search of that perfect original '70s dress, complete with a pointed collar and billowing sleeves. If you're anything like me and hold a deeply nostalgic place in your heart for this classic coming-of-age flick, then you probably jumped for joy at the thought of getting to rewatch all the summertime shenanigans that these four middle schoolers get into. Between scenes of idyllic bike rides, stolen kisses, and secret swimming holes, the girls deal with all the angst and drama that goes along with being a 12-year-old, but beyond the plotline, the movie's perfect '70s-era wardrobe should be the reason you hit play.

Next, the five simple summer outfits I always fall back on when there's nothing to wear.

Everyone has a style era they gravitate toward. My sister loves the mod minis of the swinging '60s, my best friend loves '80s power shoulders, and my allegiance lies with the free-spirited '70s. From earth-toned leather, wide-leg flares, jumpsuits, and form-fitting turtlenecks, there’s something so effortless and innately cool about the styles and silhouettes of the decade of disco and social movement. Lucky for me, the '70s trends are back in full force for fall 2019. The decade's presence on the runways was unmistakable—from Michael Kors's Studio 54 vibes featuring shimmering disco dresses and platforms to Celine’s classically chic bourgeois '70s vibe replete with A-line skirts, culottes, neckerchiefs, and tweed blazers.

There are certain '70s trends that still hold up today that are actually super wearable. To dig a little deeper on the subject, we tapped 54-year-old fashion influencer Grece Ghanem, who was excited to share her '70s style wisdom with us.
