“I feel like for this specific body identity, that’s all that’s being showcased. What about that girl in South Carolina in a tiny town who feels like that outsider? On Dealing With Social Media Haters:

“I kind of let it slide, but sometimes I clap back when there’s sheer ignorance or someone’s being snarky. When I’m really hurt, it’s mainly because I feel really disappointed. One time I got trolled by a community of women for not wearing Spanx. It was all of these women, a lot of whom were plus-size, condemning me for not wearing Spanx. It highlights how much work we have to do. I don’t feel particularly upset when a white dude comments ‘You should work out, fatty’ on my Instagram. You’re not relevant to my life; I’m not trying to service you, and I’m not here to teach you.”

On Her Hesitation to Work in the Fashion Industry:

“I didn’t feel invited, so I never participated. I did my own thing, and was influenced by publications and images throughout the years, but I never felt this deep attachment or like I could participate in this way. I could never afford the stuff either.”

“I constantly feel like, Oh my god, what’s happening?” I don’t know if there was one ‘aha’ moment, but meeting and being praised by the people I’ve respected my whole life, like Pat McGrath or Edward Enninful, is an honor.”

On the One Thing She’d Change About the Modeling Industry:

“I’d love to add a nice healthy squeeze of empathy in there. It’s hard because we’re currently dealing with an industry trying to operate on voice, but it’s also an industry of commodification and visuals. So that crossover is a little bit scary. Even with voice and intention, things can get lost in the visual and lost in the commodity. How can we uplift people apart from the visual? How can we uplift them indirectly? Maybe it’s hiring a more diverse staff so that people don’t always have to have a voice fighting for them. It’s hard to disrupt the archetype that has existed forever.”

On Why She Prefers to Shop in Stores:

“Online is more productive, but I love going to the boutique of the designer. I love the smell and the ambience, and being able to feel and touch the clothes. That goes for anything—friendships, restaurants… I’m a very sensory person.”

Natalie and Dylana Suarez are all kinds of cool. The L.A. transplants have long lived in the New York neighborhoods of DUMBO and Bushwick, the official homes of chic kids who reside beyond the predictability of Manhattan. Natalie, a model and the editor of Natalie Off Duty, and Dylana, a writer, photographer, and fashion blogger (who, it’s worth mentioning, once auditioned for American Idol), are effortless in their characteristically millennial embrace of multiple job titles.

Affectionately dubbed the Suarez sisters, the pair are three years apart in age but much closer in terms of style. “We definitely overlap,” Dylana tells us. “Natalie really loves the statement pieces, while I usually go for the more understated looks, but we’re both inspired by rock ’n’ roll and vintage California. We just interpret it in our own ways.”

She is 100% on board with adding moments of color to denim-heavy looks. “The added pop of color really made me love this outfit; it added a kick to it,” she notes. “I think when playing with a blue denim look, any pop of color in a small dose is exactly the finishing touch that’s needed.”

“I love a good leather cowboy hat and destroyed denim shorts,” Natalie shares. “Desert-chic style is super simple. Just pair your shorts with worn-in Western booties and an off-shoulder blouse for long days under the hot sun.”

Her ultimate secret to finding the perfect denim shorts? “I look for the fit on the butt, the waist, and the leg room. I like my denim super relaxed around the leg, but it needs to be really fitted on the butt. 7 for All Mankind completely nails it. It’s what makes these cutoffs so flattering.”

"Last fashion week in Paris, it was pouring, and all the looks I was sent for the Elie Saab show didn't work because I would have been dragging them over the streets in the rain. So I combined one of the tops with a pair of jeans, really high pointy heels (not that you could see those well, but they were there), and a leather jacket draped on my shoulders. The look turned out great; it became a real 'me' moment with the addition of my jeans."

On the five things she's wearing on rotation right now:

"A denim shirt, my furry Gucci slip-ons, a statement logo T-shirt, and a pair of sunnies."

On her online shopping hacks:

"I always shop online. With jeans, if I don't know the brand, I'll order my size and a size up or down to get the fit just right."

"Two summers ago, it was all about double denim. I wore denim culottes and a denim shirt, messy hair, a pair of sandals, and a tan bag. It was one of the best looks at the time."

"These black skinnies. We all need black skinny jeans, and they get better and better with every wash. You get endless legs when you wear a cropped pair of skinnies, so make sure it doesn't touch your shoes."

On her "nerdy" obsession with laundry:

"I just bought my first washer/dryer, which is super high-tech and has a denim function on it. I love doing my own laundry; it relaxes me. The smell afterward… heavenly!"

After decades of assuming Californians own the rights to laid-back looks, New Yorkers are chilling way out—and it seems like everyone’s mastering go-to ensembles that are built around chic, elevated denim.

To investigate the bicoastal rise of polished-casual, we tapped two fashionable friends of Who What Wear who each epitomize their respective city’s signature style. Representing New York: StyleScrapbook’s Andy Torres. From L.A.: Lust for Life’s Olivia Lopez. When asked to choose their essential pieces from 7 for All Mankind, there was an immediate consensus on this season’s must-have denim, so we decided to find out where else their style intersects.

WHO WHAT WEAR: Who is the first New Yorker you remember looking at and thinking, I love how they dress?

ANDY TORRES: Carrie Bradshaw. It’s a cliché, but it’s true. I grew up watching Sex and the City, and I was amazed by her wardrobe and style—it was always so daring and quirky.

WWW: Describe New York style in a nutshell.

AT: It’s a city on the go. It’s professional; it’s about looking your best and being your best. I don’t think there are any other cities that have the same energy as New York.

If I had it my way, I would wear jeans, my loafers, an oversize T-shirt, and a leather jacket every day.

WWW: What are three cliché things you do every day in New York that influence your style?

AT: I get coffee at Ground Support in SoHo. Catch the subway; it’s a quicker commute. And browse shops in SoHo and the West Village for inspiration.

WWW: What’s the best piece of fashion advice you’ve ever heard?

AT: Not everything you wear is going to get compliments!

WWW: What is it about these jeans?

AT: The quirky hem on the bottom; it adds something special to the look. In New York, I always want to keep my looks simple but still special. That’s what makes me feel comfortable without compromising style.

WHO WHAT WEAR: Who was the first Californian you remember looking at and thinking, I love how they dress?

OLIVIA LOPEZ: It’s not so much a single person but the mood of the people on the street. I love going to the Rose Bowl Flea Market and Cinespia in the summertime and seeing the style of the city. I do think Kate Bosworth perfectly captures California style; her looks are always fashion forward but uncomplicated.

WWW: What do you consider to be your classic L.A. outfit?

OL: High-wasted denim and gold-accented jewelry. I love this off-the-shoulder denim blouse—it’s perfect with blue jeans this summer.

WWW: How would you describe West Coast style versus East Coast style?

OL: L.A. is easygoing, with an edge. East Coast style is a bit more tapered and cleaned up, while the West Coast signature is to look a little bit undone and effortless.

WWW: What do you think Californians’ attitudes are toward trends?

OL: I think Californians tend to be less trend-focused, and the vintage culture and supply here allows us to experiment with mixing old and new more often.

My favorite films shot in L.A. are Basic Instinct, Clueless, and The Big Lebowski. They all show different takes on the L.A. uniform.

WWW: What are three cliché things you do every day in L.A. that influence your style?

OL: I’m the cliché of all clichés! I’ll practice vinyasa three or four times a week, eat organically—preferably from the farmers market—and avoid cross-city commitments during rush hour. And I love to bike on the weekends; I typically bike over to the Arts District or Chinatown for brunch or visit neighboring friends for coffee or juice.

Pari Ehsan knows a thing or two about balancing style inspiration with a strong sense of self. The New York–based founder and creative director of Pari Dust is notorious for her photos hung in galleries, her every outfit styled to perfectly complement the art featured alongside her.

We’ll admit that our daily struggle to get dressed pales in comparison to Ehsan’s challenge of mastering consistently on-brand, on-trend, art-inspired looks—so who better to turn to for some style advice? For this installment of Mix Masters, we asked Ehsan to pull on her favorite 7 for All Mankind pieces and show us where denim, art, and trends collide.

Could your style do with a little creative flair? Take a dive into the world of Pari Dust as she gives us some words to live by.

Tip #1: BE YOUR OFFBEAT SELF

The mention of the Spice Girls in the same sentence as "great style” is usually a reference to the second coming of Victoria Beckham—but not when you’re chatting with Ehsan. With her braided hair twisted into what she calls "a hint of Björk,” Ehsan unapologetically wears her bright cap of flowers. "I’m crazy for DIY Technicolor hair,” she smiles.

The world needs art, and fashion is expressive.

In an industry that often celebrates nonchalance, Ehsan is truly a breath of fresh air: totally candid, thoroughly enthused, and ready to wax lyrical about the intersection of art and fashion. "I feel the connection between the realms now more than ever,” she shares. "It’s what excites me and shifts my perceptions and gives me hope and purpose.” Her message is clear: Indulge in style that invigorates you, and make sure you’re having a good time.

Tip #2: KEEP IT VERSATILE

Ehsan tells us she builds her looks so the "drama can unfold” as the day progresses. "I start off minimal, with a twist,” she shares, wearing more subdued denim over a nude bodysuit. Later in the day, she says it might occur to her to experiment a bit, restyling a piece rather than getting changed. "I might turn the jacket into a top by taking my arms out of the sleeves and tying them around my chest for a corset effect.”

Every day is different. That’s the ideal.

For Ehsan, it’s important to have versatile denim pieces to play with and restyle on a whim. "It could be as the day progresses, or the week, or my mood,” she says. She notes that the boyfriend jacket is her number one essential: "It’s the perfect fall, spring, and in-between jacket. I wear it on its own, or underneath a puffer vest when it’s a little more chilly.” And if a nude bodysuit feels like something you want to work up to, a classic white tee will pair perfectly in the meantime.

Tip #3: FIND THE IDEA BEHIND THE TREND

How does Ehsan feel about trends? "I’m not against them,” she tells us. "I like the ideas they represent.” For spring, there’s excitement over the ’80s revival she’s spotted on the runways, particularly when it comes to accentuated shoulders and oversize jackets.

I believe nostalgia is important to art in any capacity.

However, a nod to the past is never at the expense of her personal style. "For every style there is a season,” she shrugs. "But I just gravitate toward what I do.” Speaking of doing what she does best, Ehsan tells us that The Brooklyn Museum’s Georgia O’Keeffe: Living Modern exhibition sprung to mind when she first caught a glimpse of 7 for All Mankind’s floral-embroidered denim. Featuring O’Keeffe’s personal wardrobe displayed among her floral paintings, the upcoming exhibition will have Ehsan feeling right at home.

What makes for pieces that layer well? What does she reach for when she feels like an outfit needs a little something more? And short of being a sartorial genius, how exactly does one walk the line between too much and not enough? We asked Collings to throw on her favorite new-season 7 for All Mankind denim pieces and show us her secrets to crafting next-level looks. Welcome to Layering 101.

Tip #1: LAYER OUTSIDE THE BOX

For those of us who can’t sew, who can only handle so much vintage, and who aren’t exactly buying couture, Collings has great news: There’s another way to build a wardrobe full of unique looks—and every fashion girl does it. "When you shop, think beyond the garment’s intended use,” she advises. "Wearing an item in an unexpected or unintended way is a great way to add a little creativity to your look.” The perfect example? 7 for All Mankind’s Belted Shirt Dress—also known as her current favorite striped coat, which she tells us is the perfect weight for this time of year.

Make your pieces work double duty.

Bonus tip: Sizes are only a guide, so don’t take them as gospel. Chances are that anyone you’ve ever style-stalked has heeded this advice—and Collings swears by it. "Overall fit is crucial for pulling off trickier layered looks, and being open to trying different sizes can help you nail the silhouette you’re looking for,” she tells us. "For example, going a size down in a bomber to make it a slight crop, or buying a button-down shirt a couple sizes too big.”

Tip #2: DOUBLE DOWN ON DENIM

Double denim: We all know it has the potential for disaster, but when done well, it’s the epitome of so-wrong-it’s-right. As far as Collings is concerned, layering denim artfully is the true test of sartorial flair. Her pro tip: "When you double up on denim, it’s essential to add another element”—even if it goes against your gut feeling that there’s already a lot going on. The key is to keep the layers monochromatic. The simple addition of a white button-down, worn undone to expose a white T-shirt beneath, takes this look from country to fashion in an instant.

It’s about adding subtle points of interest that give the look dimension without demanding attention.

Collings emphasizes that the surefire way to curate a versatile wardrobe is to keep layering in mind when you shop, adding that she snapped up this Oversized Boyfriend Jacket specifically because of her inclination to double up on denim. "The darker pockets and edging to the collar give the illusion of breaking up all that matching fabric so your look doesn’t feel as one-dimensional,” she notes. "That’s the kind of thing most people don’t notice, but it makes a head-to-toe look work.”

Tip #3: SHOW A LITTLE SKIN

Dresses worn over pants and layered turtlenecks are two classic examples of make-or-break layering moments that have dominated our Instagram feeds as of late. When we asked Collings to help translate these looks from street style galleries to everyday life, she upped the challenge by combining the two. Says Collings, "Layering a dress over pants instantly feels fashion-forward, but covering it up with a lot of fabric means you need to create some balance.” The trick to making it feel less overwhelming? "Keep the pants cropped and swap your sneakers for slides or mules.”

Bare your ankles to break up the look.

One last piece of advice: The turtleneck you wear under a dress isn’t necessarily the same one you’d wear beneath a sweater. "I love this dress, and I don’t want to ruin the shape with knitwear that’s too heavy,” Collings tells us. The simple solution is to opt for light layers, thus ensuring that you add interest without adding bulk.

How will you be layering denim this spring?

I always have white denim for summer, but I do like to incorporate other coloured denim as well.

There might be some modern trends that folks of yore could never have envisioned—people really wear sneakers with dresses, to dinner?!—but there are a few holdovers from the Golden Age that are still kickin’. First and foremost: the classical system of labelling invites to events with certain dress codes. For us modern women, this ancient system of codes can be quite confusing—after all, we’re used to wearing our sneakers to dinner!

To help you navigate the landmine that is black tie, creative black tie, business formal, and beyond, we’ve deconstructed the 10 most oft-used dress codes for you. You’ll never wonder what to wear to any event ever again!

A black-tie event is the epitome of a formal event. Cocktail-length dresses are only allowed if they are extremely dressy and sleek.

What To Wear: A formal, floor-length gown is preferred. Also allowed: a dressy cocktail dress or your best LBD paired with fancier jewellery, which will elevate the overall look.

A black-tie-optional event is still dressy, but not as strict. In other words, you can wear a formal evening gown, but no one will look at you twice if you choose to wear a cocktail dress.

What To Wear: A formal floor-length evening gown, fancier cocktail dress, a tux-style pantsuit, or LBD.

This is a professional look that isn’t overly dressy. Think: something you could definitely wear to the office (i.e., on the conservative side) but would feel comfortable wearing to grab a work drink.

What To Wear: An open-collar shirt or sweater, with a pencil skirt or trousers. You can also wear a dress, as long as it’s not provocative.

Imagine what you would wear if you were giving a very important presentation at work. That’s essentially how you should dress for a business casual event.

What To Wear: A tailored, polished dress with a blazer, or a pantsuit. Whatever you wear, style it with appropriate heels. This is not the time for flats or super-high club shoes.

Your average brunch look.

What To Wear: A skirt (either long or short) and plain tee, nice jeans with a button-down blouse, or a cotton sundress. Flats are fine.

Think: black tie with some breathing room. Still formal and dressy, but with a smidge of playfulness thrown in.

What To Wear: A dressy cocktail dress, floor-length evening gown, or LBD, plus fun and unique accessories.

Think: Olivia Palermo on just about any given day. A look that is casual, but not at all lazy or frumpy.

What To Wear: A dressy blouse with jeans and heels, a skirt and top set, a crisp pantsuit, or a dress. Flats are acceptable as long as they are not overtly casual (i.e., no sneakers).

As the name suggests, a semiformal event is just that: semi formal. It’s certainly still dressy, but not as much so as a black-tie-optional event.

What To Wear: A cocktail dress, LBD, floor-length skirt and blouse in appropriate fabrics, like silk, or dressy separates. You can also wear a long dress if you wish.

This is the most extravagant of all the dress codes—perhaps that’s why this year’s Met Gala utilised it. Think: full ball gown, elbow-length gloves, and all your best jewellery.

What To Wear: A floor-length evening gown (mandatory), gloves (optional), and your best jewellery. Your dress should incorporate luxe fabrications, like lace, silk, and chiffon. 

As the name suggests, this is a dressy event that is still meant to be primarily social and enjoyable.

What To Wear: A cocktail dress (obviously), LBD, or a shorts suit in more formal fabrications, plus a sleek pair of heels. Flats are not recommended, but can work in certain situations.
