I have a confession to make. When it comes to makeup, I can't contour. You may be thinking, "Is it really that big of a deal?" In the grand scheme of things, of course, it's not, but as a beauty editor and a qualified makeup artist, it feels rather silly to say that I'm not very good at recreating one of the biggest makeup trends of 2026.

The worst bit is that I own some of the best contour sticks on the market, and I still find it difficult to carve out my (somewhat non-existent) cheekbones. The thing is, I want a subtle contour that makes it look as if my face is naturally sculpted, but that seems to be the hardest thing to achieve.

So, when I attended a masterclass with legendary makeup artist Wendy Rowe, and she put "tantouring" on my radar, I was immediately intrigued. A natural, luminous and easy-to-achieve way to do contouring this summer that involves no bronzer whatsoever, it might just be my new favourite thing. Keep on scrolling to learn more...

What Is Tantouring?

As the name suggests, tantouring is all about contouring with fake tan, rather than your go-to bronzer. "Tantouring is about subtly creating structure and definition. It’s contouring, but through tone rather than makeup," explains Rowe. "I’ve always believed skin should look like skin, and what I love about tantouring is that it doesn’t sit on top of the face—it becomes part of it."

So, what does this involve? "You’re subtly warming and defining the areas where the sun would naturally catch—the cheekbones, temples, jawline—so the face looks healthy, lifted and rested," Rowe tells me. "It’s incredibly sophisticated because it’s seamless. You almost can’t see what’s been done; you look better."

How to Tantour

Sounds pretty good, right? Although I was completely sold by the sound of tantouring, I was a little worried that I wouldn't be able to do it at home. However, it couldn't be easier. "The key with tantouring is to keep it light and intuitive," explains Rowe. "I recommend doing it at night, because it works beautifully as an overnight skin treatment as well as a complexion enhancer."

Rowe advises starting with clean skin, and then mixing a few drops of your chosen tanning drops (she uses the Three Warriors Hydrabronze Tan Drops) into your moisturiser, and applying it all over the face for "hydration and warmth".

Next, take a soft brush and apply the product onto the areas where you would use your usual contour stick or powder. Rowe recommends applying the drops under the cheekbones, around the temples, along the jawline, and even lightly through the eye socket.

"The beauty of it is that you won’t really see it going on," she says. "It’s sheer, seamless, and very forgiving. There’s no harsh contour stripe, no obvious tan line. You’re essentially laying down tone and structure that develops over time. The next morning, you wake up looking fresher, healthier and more defined."

My Tantouring Results

I have to say, I was a bit skeptical about trying this method myself, but it couldn't have been easier. I applied my tanning drops in the evening and woke up with a natural-looking, bronzed and sculpted complexion. I went in with my foundation in the morning and skipped bronzer altogether, letting my tantour do all the talking throughout the day. Not only did this save me time in the morning, but I was obsessed with the seamless result. I'll definitely be doing this the entire summer.

The Best Products for Tantouring

When I booked my first "liquid microneedling" facial, I thought the purported benefits sounded way too good to be true. Smooth, clear skin with zero downtime or actual needles? Surely, I wouldn't walk away that impressed. Now, I wouldn't call it a one-to-one swap for the spicy in-office treatment, but I can confirm that the hype is not just marketing. My skin looked reborn (that's the only way I can describe it), and it was all thanks to tiny microspears called spicules.

If that sentence just made you raise a brow, keep on scrolling. Below, I'm outlining everything you need to know about the skin-smoothing technology, including the oft-overlooked tip experts are begging you not to ignore.

First, what are spicules?

Spicules are tiny microspears typically derived from hydrolyzed sponges, though some companies have started to bioengineer them with silica to mimic the ones found in nature. "These offer more consistency in size, shape, and sterility," adds aesthetician Tasha Marc. The technology skyrocketed in Korea (as most skincare innovations do!), originating first as a professional-grade treatment before popping up in gentler at-home serums meant for regular use.

Whether the spicules are natural or synthetic, "when applied to the skin, they create microchannels in the epidermis, which can enhance cellular turnover and improve the penetration of accompanying ingredients," explains dual-board-certified facial plastic and reconstructive surgeon Eunice Park, MD, MPH. That's why the procedure has been described as needle-free and liquid microneedling. You're creating tiny, temporary holes in the skin without using, well, actual needles. Over a few days, give or take, these microspears dissolve in your skin with natural cell turnover.

What are the skincare benefits?

As Park mentioned, spicules enhance the penetration of other active ingredients. By creating those microchannels in your skin, your potent serums can travel deeper into the skin and result in faster, more effective results. Those microchannels also stimulate collagen production by kick-starting your skin's wound-healing process, similar to actual microneedling, without wreaking too much havoc on the barrier. Spicules also generally enhance skin cell turnover, which is great for those who need a little extra help clearing their pores.

TL;DR? Marc says spicules "provide a combination of exfoliation support, treatment penetration, and renewal signaling," as opposed to AHAs and BHAs that dissolve bonds between dead skin cells and physical scrubs, which focus on surface-level smoothing.

"What makes spicules unique is that they sit somewhere between traditional exfoliation and procedural treatments," adds Park. "Unlike acids or scrubs, which primarily work by chemically or mechanically removing surface cells, spicules create microscopic channels that can help deliver active ingredients deeper into the skin. Compared to microneedling, however, the effect is far more superficial and less controlled." Essentially, no spicule serum will deliver the same result as a professional microneedling treatment. As a matter of fact, no at-home skincare formula will ever replace the effects of an in-office procedure.

"Spicule skincare sits in a very specific in-between category," adds Marc. "It's more active than traditional exfoliation but less invasive than in-office procedures." For those on the hunt for a happy medium, it may be the perfect solution. That said, if you have very sensitive, rosacea-prone, or highly inflamed skin (from, say, a recent skin-tightening procedure), experts say you should probably steer clear.

Are spicules safe in skincare?

Short answer: yes, assuming you're using a high-quality, cosmetic-grade product. Don't worry—you'll find recommendations just ahead. You might feel a slight prickly sensation as you rub in a spicule-infused serum, but it shouldn't feel painful. For what it's worth, I'd rate my professional liquid microneedling treatment a six out of 10 on the spiciness scale, and products designed for at-home use are much, much gentler.

That said, spicule-infused skincare exists on a spectrum, and more intensity does not always equal better results. "I am a fan of spicule skincare when it is formulated with restraint. I do not believe the best spicule product is necessarily the one with the highest concentration or the most intense prickling sensation," shares Brian Oh, founder and CEO of Venn Skincare (which recently launched a serum featuring 0.1% hydrolyzed sponge spicules). "Because they are physical structures, the category needs to be approached responsibly."

Park agrees. "There is still limited long-term data on spicule technology, particularly with repeated use of higher-concentration formulations, so I think some caution is warranted," she shares. At the end of the day, spicules are foreign microscopic structures you're introducing to the skin. Yes, they're meant to shed naturally with your skin's cell turnover, but everyone's skin is different. "Individual skin responses can vary, especially in patients with sensitive skin, underlying inflammatory conditions, or impaired skin barriers," Park adds.

If you really want to dive into the science, spicules rely on your skin's proteolytic enzymes, which naturally break down proteins and clear foreign material, like microscopic sponge particles. "If enzyme activity is low or impaired, the particles may persist longer than intended," Marc explains. Factors like age, barrier health, hydration, pH, and underlying skin conditioners can impair this activity, but there's not a solid way to measure it. "Instead, we can only assess it indirectly through signs like sluggish desquamation, buildup of dead skin cells, sensitivity, or delayed healing," Marc adds. So if you're dealing with any of those woes after using a spicule serum, it could be a sign that your skin might not be dissolving those particles properly.

The key? Start low and slow with your spicule skincare, assessing your skin for any unfavorable reactions and making sure to apply it correctly—more on the latter in just a moment.

How to Use Spicule Serum Correctly

FYI: A spicule-infused formula is no ordinary serum, and you shouldn't use it as such! Below, find a few expert-backed tips to keep in mind.

• Wash and dry your face completely. "These products are designed to be used on clean, dry skin—typically after cleansing and before heavier serums or creams," explains Park.
• Apply your spicule serum of choice with gentle pressure, pressing the product into the skin rather than rubbing aggressively, which can increase irritation. Marc also recommends using a small amount. "More product won't improve results," she says.
• Follow up with soothing, hydrating products to reinforce the skin barrier, and avoid harsh actives like retinoids, AHAs, and BHAs.
• As always, remember to apply proper sun protection the next morning. Beauty of Josen's Dayscreen is a personal favorite, as it features green tea and hyaluronic acid for extra soothing benefits.

If you're new to spicules, Marc advises introducing them gradually into your routine—once or twice a week—and working your way up to a regular cadence. She also recommends using them only at night to give your skin time to recover and reset.

Can I use spicules as a spot treatment?

Well… sort of. If you have specific areas of concern (acne scars, enlarged pores, or rough texture), you technically could apply a spicule serum only on those regions as a concentrated treatment. This method reduces the chances of overuse, especially on sensitive areas of surrounding skin. However, you shouldn't use it as a direct spot treatment for actively inflamed blemishes, especially if the skin has been freshly picked. It happens! "I think of it less as a 'zit spot treatment' and more as a controlled treatment step for areas where someone wants improved-looking texture, clarity, radiance, or uneven tone," Oh shares. "It can be used selectively on zones—for example, the cheeks, forehead, or areas of visible texture—but I would apply it evenly within that zone rather than dabbing it aggressively onto one inflamed spot."

I've enlisted the help of Luke Hersheson, celebrity hairstylist and founder of Hershesons (who also tends to the hair of Victoria Beckham, Sienna Miller and Iris Law, to name but a few of his celebrity clientele), to share his top tips for achieving a perfectly sleek bun at home. How to Do a Slicked-Back Bun

Before you begin, there are a few tools and products you will need to get a professional-looking finish. "For this look, I recommend a mixed bristle brush, a styling cream like Hershesons Almost Everything Cream (£25), a texture spray, Frenchies hair pins and a hairspray like Got2b Glued Hairspray (£6)," says Hersheson.

"Second-day hair is ideal, especially if it’s already straight. Natural texture helps the product grip and hold the shape better than freshly washed hair," he says, so forgo your shampoo, as a little bit of oil will help to hold the hair in place.

1. Prep Hair

Begin with dry hair. If your hair is slippery or freshly washed, you can mist through some texturising spray to help give the hair some grit and hold. I'm using Oribe's Dry Texturising Spray (£47) through my lengths for extra grip.

2. Choose Parting

Next, it's time to choose your parting. "The parting completely changes the character of the style," says Hersheson. "No parting feels more androgynous and editorial, a side parting gives a slightly boyish, directional feel and a centre parting reads softer," he says. "The position of the bun also plays a role; lower buns feel more classic and polished, while higher placements feel more lifted and sportier."

3. Section Hair

If your lengths are on the longer or thicker side, it can be helpful to section your hair into two parts to help get a smooth finish and minimise bumps. Here, I've separated my hair into a top section and a bottom section with my tail comb, the latter of which I'll slick back into a ponytail first before repeating with the top section.

4. Apply Pomade

"Apply Almost Everything Cream generously through the lengths and roots," says Hersheson. This will help to provide hold and allow you to achieve a sleek and shiny result.

5. Slick Back

"Brush hair back (or into your chosen parting) using a mixed bristle brush, keeping tension firm to eliminate bumps," says Hersheson. Look for a hair brush with boar bristles that are densely packed together, as this will help to tuck all the hairs into a smooth finish. "Continue brushing until the hair sits flat and close to the head," he says. "Curly or coily hair requires more intensive brushing and product to get the hair as flat and compact as possible," he says.

6. Tie Hair

"Gather into a ponytail at your desired height, ensuring it stays tight and controlled and secure with an elastic. Keep the hair balanced and neutral in placement so the nape doesn’t drop or sag throughout the day," says Hersheson.

7. Slick Back Front

Next, you can repeat the sam process with the front section to join the ponytail, using a pomade and your brush to smooth the sections into place.

8. Twist Into Bun

"Twist the ponytail and wrap it around the base to form a bun and pin or secure the bun in place," says Hersheson.

9. Smooth Flyaways

If you have any shorter layers that don't quite reach or stubborn flyaways, Hersheson has some tips to remedy them. "Shorter pieces need extra control," he says. "Use more product and apply heat where needed to set those sections in place so they don’t shift or pop out." I like using a hair wax stick to provide more targeted control and boost the glossy finish.

10. Apply Hairspray

As a final step, you can then finish with hairspray for extra hold and gloss.

The Result

And there you have your slicked-back bun. It should feel secure, but never too tight, and last all day. For extra hold, you can go in with another blast of hairspray to ensure your slick-back bun stays in place all day and night.

For as long as I can remember, I've always had watery eyes, and I've always loved eye makeup. However, the two don't go well together. All it takes is a slight gust of wind or a sudden change in temperature, and my watery eyes stream and ruin my makeup.

And if you're anything like me, you've probably had your eye makeup ruined on more than one occasion thanks to those rogue tears that seemingly come from nowhere and melt away eyeliner and eyeshadow in their wake. I've lost count of the number of times a soft, smoky wing has disappeared. I have watery eyes year-round, but with hayfever season in full swing right now, I've been on a quest to find out how to stop watery eyes from ruining my makeup, once and for all.

So, I enlisted the help of Dr Elizabeth Hawkes, a consultant oculoplastic surgeon and ophthalmologist, to find out the causes of watery eyes and how to stop them from ruining your eye makeup.

What Causes Watery Eyes?

"Blepharitis is the number one cause of dry eye, which is an umbrella term that encompasses lots of symptoms, i.e., redness or a gritty or foreign body sensation and, ironically, dry eyes as the eye makes excess tears when dry," says Dr Hawkes. "There can be many causes, such as allergies, medical conditions or as a result of certain oral medications, but it’s always best to see an eye specialist or an optician as there are subtle differences."

Blocked Tear Ducts: "If it’s just one eye, it could be a blocked tear duct. If you have a blockage, you will have a watery eye, which can be caused by trauma to the tear duct. It can be congenital or caused by an infection, but it needs a thorough assessment," says Dr Hawkes. "A common test eye specialists conduct is to ask patients if their eyes are watering indoors and outdoors. If they water indoors, it’s highly suggestive of blockage. If it’s a duct blockage, you need surgery, but it depends on what layer or level the obstruction is at, as this determines how invasive it needs to be," she adds.

Dry Eyes: "If it’s blepharitis and associated dry eye—watery eye syndrome—the mainstay of treatment is ironically with lubricating eye drops, which can be a tricky concept for patients to get their heads around," says Dr Hawkes. "This is because the more lubricated the ocular surface is, the less likely you are to trigger the lacrimal gland to produce tears." Eye drops can help to rehydrate the eyes and prevent them from overcompensating with excessive tears.

Allergies: "If it’s allergy-related, it needs to be investigated and looked at for the cause. Either way, there are lots of different eye drop options available to the different causes that can all treat the condition efficiently," she says.

Can Makeup Make Watery Eyes Worse?

Depending on the cause of your watery eyes, you may find that makeup can exacerbate symptoms. "Blepharitis is the most common cause, which causes blockage of the meibomian glands, which are specialised glands in between the eyelashes, that secrete an oily layer of tear film," says Dr Hawkes. "They open on the waterline, so when you apply eyeliner or mascara, you’re irritating and directly blocking these glands," she says.

"Generally, I would avoid using eyeliner on the waterline and use products suitable for sensitive skin. Clinique has a brilliant 'eye safety promise’ as the products undergo rigorous testing on how they affect the ocular surface, which not many brands do," she says. "Be cautious with application and always remove eye makeup properly, especially if you have sensitive eyes."

How to Stop Watery Eyes From Ruining Makeup

Preventing watery eyes is the key step to minimise the risk of them ruining your eye makeup, and there are some preventative steps you can take to reduce watery eyes.

Cleanse the Eyes: "Much like a thorough skincare routine and ensuring your skin is in a healthy condition to create a good base for makeup, proper cleansing and care of the eye is key here," says Dr Hawkes. "Ophthalmologists call it ‘lid hygiene’, and this is a must, removing in between the lashes morning and evening to ensure glands don’t get blocked," she says. "Optase Life Sensitive Eye Makeup Remover (£10) is a great one. It has no harsh surfactants that affect the lipid layer on the eyes and does a great job at thoroughly removing makeup."

Practice Good Makeup Hygiene: "Having good makeup hygiene is vital. This includes removing makeup properly, cleaning your brushes, not keeping mascara for years or using expired or dried-out products," she says. Typically, you should replace your mascara every 3-6 months, cream eyeshadows every 12-18 months and powder eyeshadows every 1-2 years. As a general rule of thumb, cream formulations tend to expire more quickly, so go through your makeup bag and check the expiry dates on the products you're using. Additionally, ensure you're regularly washing your makeup brushes, too.

Opt for Cream Eye Makeup: Whilst Dr Hawkes doesn't flag any particular ingredients to avoid in your makeup, she does favour cream over powder formulas. "Specific ingredients in makeup aren’t as important; however, I always advise cream-based eyeshadows and makeup, because powder particles might go into the eye and cause irritation," she says.

Eye Makeup to Avoid: Having spoken to makeup artists over the years, I've learned that it's best to avoid eyeshadows with glitter or shimmer, as they can cause fallout and further irritate the eyes. As for your lashes, tubing mascaras are great as they're long-wearing, but remove easily from the eyes with warm water. Waterproof mascaras are great for avoiding smudges; however, they are more difficult to remove, so look for a good eye makeup remover to fully remove them.

Look for Eye-Safe Brands: "Additionally, I recommend products and brands that have been tested, much like Clinique’s eye safety promise," she says. Look for brands and products that have been ophthalmologist-tested to minimise eye irritation. Additionally, if you're a contact lens wearer, Dr Hawkes says that this can cause problems in itself, so be very mindful to take extra care of your eyes. She also recommends avoiding eyelash extensions if you're prone to issues.

If your watery eyes persist, always seek medical advice. "If you leave anything too long, it can affect your vision, so it’s best to be safe and cautious when it comes to your eyesight," says Dr Hawkes.

How to Fix Eye Makeup

Whether it's a windy day or there is a high pollen count on an important occasion, there are times when smudged eye makeup just needs to be fixed. I've lost count of the number of times I've had my makeup professionally done for a wedding or special occasion, only for it to be ruined by my watering eyes. Here are my tips for fixing it.

Dab, don't rub: Avoid rubbing the area and instead dab with a tissue to remove any excess tears. Often, the area can become dry, so you can rehydrate the area with a sensitive skin-friendly eye cream. This will help to hydrate and soothe any irritation around the eyes. For quick fixes, a Q-tip can help clean up smaller smudges, or you can use a small makeup brush to tidy up smudged eyeliner wings.

Fix the Base: If the situation requires you to fully reapply the makeup, there are a few things you can do. Applying a little concealer can help create a gripper canvas for eye makeup, and it can then be fixed with a pressed setting powder to create a waterproof barrier. Applying with a puff rather than a brush is best to avoid particles from going into the eyes. Tap onto the skin to set the concealer.

Apply Eye Makeup: Waterproof eyeliners or long-wearing eyeshadows (such as cream-to-powder formulas) will provide the best wear. You can also apply a small amount of powder eyeshadow over a cream formula to set your eye makeup. Just ensure the area is fully dry from tears; otherwise, the eye makeup won't adhere. Then, you can apply a setting spray to help lock it in (just keep your eyes closed when you're misting, of course!).

Carry the Essentials: Keep some of your core products with you in case it needs fixing or topping up throughout the day. Alongside your makeup, eye drops or mists can help refresh the eyes throughout the day, and sunglasses are useful for shielding eyes from gusts of wind, or even hiding smudged eye makeup as a last resort.

If you've been following the latest nail trends, you know that maximalism has fully taken over. "Soap nails are a clean, glossy manicure that gives the impression of freshly washed hands," says Ignatova. "They are usually done in sheer pinks or soft nudes with a smooth, glass-like shine." Step 1: Prep

Once you have all your materials in front of you, you'll ned to do some prep work. "Start by shaping the nails into a soft square or rounded nail shape," says Ignatova. "Then, gently push back the cuticles and lightly buff the nail surface so it is smooth."

Step 2: First Coat

Just like any manicure, you'll need to start with your first coat of paint. "Apply a structured base coat to give the nails shape and a uniform appearance on all sides," says Sixxx. "This is what creates that seamless, barely-there illusion."

Step 3: Second Coat and Gloss

The third step is more of a two-in-one. "Apply one to two thin coats of a sheer, pale nail polish, keeping the layers light rather than thick," says Ignatova. "Finish with a glossy topcoat for that reflective shine."

Step 4: Finishing Touches (Optional)

Once your nails are dry, there are a few extra steps you can take to tie everything together. Ignatova says that you can apply cuticle oil, but if you have damaged nails, Sixxx suggests using tinted builder gel instead with a slightly yellow or cream tone along the free edge to mimic the natural nail.

In a few whirlwind months, I traveled from London to Los Angeles, attended the Grammys, and returned home to New York only to be plunged into the thick of New York Fashion Week. However, my teenage reverie always depicted my skin glowing and calm, my lashes flake-free, and my lips perfectly painted all day long—no smudges or smears in sight. How wrong I was, until recently.

In the midst of a very busy winter, I found myself checking into The Sun Rose West Hollywood to attend the 2026 Grammys. The event not only served as the crown jewel of my year but also became the crash course I desperately needed in long-lasting beauty thanks to professional makeup artist and content creator Krista Keehus. I sat in her chair around 10:30 a.m. with eye bags like bruises and skin irritated by travel, only to present her with another obstacle: I needed her camouflaging glam to last me into the wee hours of the morning.

Below, the breakdown of what it takes to craft long-lasting makeup that perseveres through 15-hour NYFW days, award shows (plus the after-party), and after-work dates—as someone who’s done it all.

Easy 6-Step Guide to No-Budge Makeup

1. Proper Skin Prep

My stay at The Sun Rose (formerly the Pendry West Hollywood) consisted of some work and play—running around to interview celebrities (read all about my IRL chat with Selena Gomez) and lounging at the rooftop pool for a little R&R before the big day. However, the stark weather change from NYC to L.A. played games with my skin, inspiring new flare-ups of rosacea and eczema. It’s because of this that Keehus had to take extra care with my complexion the morning of the Grammys. Though, she swears skin prep is the key to long-lasting makeup regardless.

“The skin is the canvas—if it’s not properly prepped and primed, you won’t get the best payoff or longevity from your products,” she explains. This means proper moisturization and priming beforehand, and the makeup artist cites MAC Cosmetics’ Studio Radiance Primer and “a glowy foundation” as her go-to combo for a flawless, no-budge base. However, if a velvet or matte finish is the end goal, she recommends using MAC’s Mattifine Primer.

The next step is to set everything with a loose powder and a fine layer of setting spray, MAC Fix+ being her personal pick. “That combination gives amazing longevity while still keeping the skin looking like skin—seamless, balanced, and not overly heavy.” For eyes, she swears there’s nothing better than the brand’s Paint Pots (and I can attest to this—I’ve been using them for 10 years).

2. Layer Strategically

“The key to long-lasting glam is strategic layering,” says celebrity makeup artist Kasey Spickard. The MUA, who creates long-wear looks on Jenna Lyons, Ciara Miller, and more for never-ending event days and press runs, has more than a few tricks up his sleeves when it comes to bulletproof beauty. Both he and Keehus agree that this layering act is about building coverage with thin layers of cream and powder, utilizing waterproof products (and sweatproof!) whenever possible. Keehus says this helps the products look “fused into the skin” instead of sitting on top, which can happen if you use too heavy a hand.

Keehus’s pro tip? Use a setting spray between these layers. The makeup artist prefers to mist MAC’s Fix+ setting spray before, during, and after the complexion routine to ensure maximum wear. “I find that continuously reintroducing light hydration keeps the skin balanced and prevents texture or caking,” she explains. “It also helps stop product from clinging to dry areas, which makes a big difference in how the makeup wears throughout the day.”

Pro Tip: Blush is usually the first makeup to fade, but Spickard trusts his “blush sandwich” layering technique for all-day wear. Start with a layer of cream blush, then swirl on a bit of powder blush before stippling a final layer of cream blush for a skin-like glow. “The powder acts as an adhesive to lock that blush in and make sure that it lasts all day [and night],” he explains.

3. Let It Dry

I know it’s tempting to blend your concealer the second it hits your under-eyes, but listen to the pros, and put the brush down. “Letting the concealer dry down was one of my aha moments for long-wearing makeup,” says Spickard. The MUA recommends letting the formula sit on your skin for at least a minute before blending it out with a dense concealer brush or damp beauty sponge in a tapping motion, not a sweeping one. “That tapping motion is going to give you the most coverage,” he explains.

Spickard says that in waiting for the concealer to set before blending, the fixing agents in the formula will begin to settle, thus depositing controlled coverage. “You’ll actually need less powder to lock it in,” he adds. The makeup artist calls the immediate follow-up with powder over concealer “one of the biggest mistakes” people consistently make. “It creates an almost gummy texture, and that’s when you start to see more cakiness,” he elaborates. In short, put the brush down!

4. Set Your Face

Though we’ve been taking the proper measures to “cocktail” our skin with setting spray in between layers, the pros would be remiss to leave setting powder out of the conversation. Keehus says that loose setting powder is an essential step, but one to use strategically. “I used to think more setting meant longer wear, but I learned that applying a very light amount of loose powder—only in areas that tend to crease—makes such a difference,” she explained. On me, the makeup artist concentrated it under the eyes. “It keeps the skin looking fresh instead of dry or heavy,” she adds.

Spickard personally recommends the Givenchy Prisme Libre and the Huda Beauty Easy Bake formulas for sealing cream formulas. Though he says the setting spray dance continues for extended wear. After letting the powder sit for a moment, he follows with a “wet” setting spray—Urban Decay’s All Nighter being his choice. Once that layer dries, he tops everything off with an aerosol setting spray for extra protection, specifically highlighting the One Size On ’Til Dawn and L’Oréal Paris Infallible 3-Second setting mists. “When you layer these products correctly, the makeup really grips onto the skin and stays locked in place for hours.”

Pro Tip: To preserve your contour and highlight, invest in both brightening and deep loose powders to layer over your cream products. “This keeps the tone balanced without losing the intensity or sculpting you’ve already created. [Plus] it helps lock everything in,” Spickard explains. Loose powder can also be used to blend eye shadow, too. “If I’m creating a sultry, smoky eye, I’ll take a small duo-fiber brush with a touch of translucent powder and lightly dust it over the eye,” says Keehus. “It softly sets everything without dulling the dimension, and it really helps the blend look seamless.”

5. Seal the Look

Perhaps the most advanced step of this process is this (practically) final one. Professional makeup artists everywhere call Inglot’s Duraline a staple in their kits, but we mere mortals are only experimenting with this look-preserving product now. “It’s a mixing medium that can be blended into liners or gel liners, and I also like layering it over pencil liners on the lips and eyes,” says Spickard. “It helps waterproof the product, locks everything in place, and makes sure it doesn’t budge.” Another alternative is Make Up For Ever’s Aqua Seal, which turns powders into long-lasting, waterproof pigments.

Pro Tip: Duraline and Aqua Seal are especially great for eyes prone to creasing, like anyone with oily lids or hooded eyes. Simply swipe the product over your eyeliner or mix it into the formula (if gel) to get the long-lasting look you desire.

6. Prepare for Touch-Ups

Makeup is, by nature, a temporary enhancer. To really prolong the lifespan of your look, you’ll need to keep a few things on hand for quick touch-ups. Spickard and Keehus both recommend storing a small kit in your bag for any necessary fixes (which won’t be many after proper prep).

Lips are the first to wear away, so Spickard recommends keeping a Make Up For Ever Artist Color Pencil Extreme Smudge-Proof Lip Liner on hand. “The formula is extremely waterproof and long-lasting, which reduces the need for a full lip liner retouch,” he explains. But for extra insurance (or any events where eating and drinking are involved), Spickard suggests swapping a pencil lip liner for the Sacheu Peel Off Lip Liner stain altogether. “It helps maintain color and reduces the need to constantly reapply your lips,” he adds. Of course, we can’t forget lip balm, and Keehus remains loyal to good ol' Aquaphor.

The next to erode is usually skin. I keep a small book of blotting papers in my purse to remove excess oil, as it complicates subsequent touch-ups, and spot-correct my complexion with powder products. “When I give my clients a small to-go touch-up kit, I like to include a mini powder puff that already has loose setting powder on it,” says Spickard. “I tell them to gently press that into the center of the face, the T-zone, and the under-eye area to refresh the complexion and control shine without disturbing the makeup.” While thin layers of powder won’t make the look cakey, layering cream over your powder-set makeup will. “It’s much better to refresh with powder and focus on lips and brows rather than adding more complexion products,” Spickard adds.

Let me get this out of the way: There's no wrong way to wear ballet flats. I fully encourage you to style them in any manner you please. However, if you could use some pointers on how to make the classic shoes look fully up to date in 2026, you've come to the right place. The versatile flat shoes have never gone out of style in decades, but women's styling choices have certainly evolved. If you're anything like me, you might associate ballet flats with twee, schoolgirl-inspired outfits, but there are so many other options.

After sifting through hundreds of street style images of people wearing ballet flats, I noticed a few themes. If your feeds are anything like mine right now, French pins are everywhere. There's no denying that French hair accessories are having a huge moment right now and have asserted themselves as a key player in 2026 hair trends. And ever since spotting the masterfully placed French pins and French combs at The Row's Spring/Summer 2026 show (it's probably my favourite beauty trend of the season), I've not been able to stop thinking about them. Claw clips may have reigned during the first half of the decade, but I'm willing to bet that 2026 belongs to the French pin.

Whilst I might not have the magically coiffing hands of legendary hairstylist Guido Palau, who was behind the intricate hairstyles backstage, it has encouraged me to get out of my hair rut of wearing my hair down every day, and so I've been researching exactly how to use a French pin.

If you've never used a French pin before, it can be both a bit intimidating and finicky (my first few French twists? They fell out in seconds). I've scrolled through countless video tutorials, which all make it look so easy to do. But, as I've since learned, there are so many hidden tricks to ensure you're using your French pin correctly. So, I enlisted the help of hair stylist Limoz Logli to share his expert tips on how to use a French pin and actually get your French twist to hold in place all day.

How to Use A French Pin

First things first, you'll need to choose the right French pin for your hair. Smaller French pins work on bob-length shoulder-length hair; however, those with longer or thicker lengths will get a more secure hold from a larger French pin. I personally love Logli's Yael French Pin (£19), which is larger than most and gives me the most secure fit on my long and thick hair. It's also a little flexible, helping to easily secure it into twists. For shorter hair lengths and finer hair types, & Other Stories Sculptural Hair Pins (£19) are a good size and have a chic chrome finish that peeks out of your French twist, effortlessly updating your everyday updo.

Prepping your hair will also ensure your French twist holds in place, especially if you have silky lengths that are more slippery to work with. "Hair should be clean but not greasy or slippery. Day-old hair is ideal, or freshly washed hair with a bit of added texture. You want grip; overly clean, soft hair won’t hold as well," says Logli. "A light texture spray or dry shampoo through the roots helps enormously. Start by adding light texture through the roots and mid-lengths; this gives the hair grip and movement," he says. "Avoid pomades, as they’re too slippery and can make the twist collapse," he adds. "Curly or textured hair often holds naturally and usually needs less product, just careful shaping and anchoring."

As for using the French pin itself, there are endless ways to use it. Ahead, I'm sharing two ways to create a French twist using a French pin.

Method 1

This technique involves wrapping your hair around your fingers to create a twist before inserting the French pin to secure it. I find this method gives more of an effortless and undone vibe, especially if you let the ends peek out of your twist. For something more polished and refined, scroll on to method two further below, where you use the pin in place of your fingers (I also find this to provide a more secure fit, IMO).

Step 1

After prepping your hair with any styling products, gather your hair into a low ponytail at the nape of the neck and hold onto it with your non-dominant hand. "Just above the nape is the most flattering and secure place," says Logli. "Keeping it slightly off-centre makes it feel more modern and relaxed."

Step 2

Wrap your ponytail underneath your index and middle fingers of your dominant hand. This allows you to easily twist the hair upwards. My biggest tip? Remove your rings for this part, as they can sometimes catch on the twist.

Step 3

"Gather the hair at the nape and twist it upward, following the shape of the head," says Logli. Twist your hair in a circular motion until your hair is fully twirled into the twist, and use your other hand to help guide the hair up and hold it at the top of the twist. If you have long hair or layers, don't worry if they won't all fit in the twist at this stage.

Step 4

For any ends that are peeking out of the twist, you can simply tuck them inside the twist using your other hand as you hold the twist in place.

Step 5

I'd argue that the technique you use to secure the French pin into your hair is the most crucial step. Above, I'm showing how to move the French pin into the hair for the most secure fit. "Insert the pin with the curve facing outward, not toward the head," says Logli. "Then, slide it into the twist, then rotate it inward so the curve cups the shape of the head," he says.

Step 6

"Hold the twist in place, then insert the French pin from the side with more volume. Catch a section of the twist, rotate the pin inward, and slide it down so it anchors into the hair at the base of the head," he adds.

It can take a few tries to get the right tension, so if it feels too loose or too tight, you can start again. "If it feels loose, it isn’t anchored into the hair near the scalp," says Logli. "If it feels uncomfortable, the pin is pressing against the head instead of sitting within the twist."

Step 7

If you have any ends popping out that bother you, you can slide in some hair grips for a neater look. "With shorter layers, secure the twist first, then pin loose pieces afterwards," says Logli. "For very long hair, fold excess length back into the twist rather than building it upward so the shape stays elegant." However, if you're going for a more effortless look, you can keep them peeking out for a casual French twist.

Step 8

And there you have your French twist. "The twist should feel firm and controlled, but never strained," says Logli. "If it’s too loose, the pin won’t have enough structure to anchor into; if it’s too tight, the hair loses flexibility, and the pin can slip," he says. "Aim for a smooth, secure twist that stays close to the head; the pin should lock it in place, not fight against it," he says.

As a finishing step, you can use a light touch of hairspray to set it into place. and pull a few face-framing tendrils free if you prefer. "Finish with a light mist of hairspray for hold and polish; the result should look glossy and intentional, never stiff," says Logli.

Method 2

If the first method doesn't feel secure enough, try this one instead. Instead of wrapping your hair around your fingers to create the twist, you'll instead wrap it around the French pin itself. I find this method results in a much more secure French twist, as well as looking a little more polished and sleeker overall.

Step 1

Begin by gathering your hair into a low ponytail at the nape of your neck using your non-dominant hand.

Step 2

Wrap the base of the ponytail around the top of the French pin in your other hand, twisting upwards to form a coiled twist at the back of your head. Again, don't worry too much if any ends are peeking out at this stage—they can be tucked away at the end if you wish.

Step 3

Just like the technique used in the first method, we're using a similar process to insert the pin as shown above. You want to angle the pin so that it catches the back of the head, before angling it downwards to secure it to the back of the head as you slide it down towards the nape of the neck.

Step 4

As you come to the end of your twist, angle the end of the pin towards the scalp, angling the pin downwards so the curve of the pin hugs the back of your head as it slides into the twist. You might have to gently wiggle the French pin into place at the top of your twist to find the right angle to comfortably insert the pin. It should feel secure. If it feels too tight or too loose, start again until you find a more comfortable fit.

Step 5

You can then tuck in any ends that didn't fit into the twist at the side of the twist using your fingers, or add a couple of hair grips to secure them more firmly if needed.

Step 6

And there you have your finished French twist. You can then pull a few strands free for some face-framing tendrils if you like, and fix with some hairspray for extra hold.

I have always considered myself aggressively anti-hat. Not in a dramatic way—just in a this is not for me way. I’ve spent years telling myself my head is too big, my face too round, my proportions too off. Hats, in my mind, were either for people who look cool no matter what or for emergencies involving bad weather and worse decisions. Pillbox hats, specifically, lived in a very special category of intimidation: elegant, structured, historical, and clearly not designed with my anxieties in mind. They felt like they required posture, poise, and a personality I wasn’t sure I had access to.

So naturally, I decided to wear one every single day for a week. During Copenhagen Fashion Week. In public. In front of street style photographers. Insert Jemima Kirke "What the hell, sure" meme here.

The hat in question was the Gigi Burris Laura pillbox—clean, sculptural, and deceptively simple. Burris, who trained as a milliner at Parsons and still blocks each hat by hand using centuries-old techniques, is obsessive (in the best way) about proportion. The Laura’s shape is intentionally precise—designed to sit just right, not overwhelm—which I only appreciated after actually putting it on. What looks severe on a shelf suddenly felt grounding. Intentional. Like the outfit had a point of view, even when the rest of me didn’t.

Copenhagen Fashion Week turned out to be the perfect testing ground. As Coco Schiffer—stylist, influencer, and newly minted pillbox codesigner with Burris—told me during dinner last Copenhagen Fashion Week that confidence doesn’t come before you try something bold; it comes after you repeat it. If you wan't to be a hat person, just put on a hat!

By day two, the hat stopped feeling like a “moment” and started feeling normal. By day three, I wasn’t thinking about my head size or whether the hat looked right. I was just wearing it (and getting stopped for street style photographers, I might add!).

The timing felt especially fitting given that Schiffer and Burris had just launched their pillbox collaboration capsule—designed with real wardrobes in mind, not special occasions. Their shared philosophy is refreshingly anti-precious: pair a structured hat with everyday pieces, don’t overthink it, and let repetition do the work—or, as Schiffer might say, make everything else boring on purpose.

By the end of the week, the pillbox had quietly dismantled my long-held belief that I “don’t wear hats.” Turns out all it took was one well-made pillbox, a city full of good tailoring, and the willingness to just start.

How to Style a Pillbox Hat

Rule #1: Confidence Is Key

Confidence, more than anything else, is what makes a pillbox hat actually work. Hat designer Gigi Burris says it best: “Confidence is the only rule—when you walk out wearing a hat confidently, you shine, and the hat does not overpower you or any other part of the look.” I noticed this almost immediately during my week of styling one—once I stopped fussing over whether the hat was too much and just wore it like it belonged there, the whole outfit fell into place. The hat stopped feeling like a statement and started feeling natural.

Just like Burris predicted, the compliments came quickly. “Once you begin receiving compliments on your hat, which is inevitable, you will feel empowered to style it over and over again,” she explained. Turns out confidence isn’t just the first rule—it’s the one that makes all the others possible.

Rule #2: Keep Balance in Mind

When it comes to styling a pillbox hat, balance matters more than following any hard-and-fast rules. Schiffer sums it up perfectly: “I don’t really believe in strict rules, but I do believe in balance. If the hat is doing something, the rest of the outfit should calm down.”

That mindset became especially helpful as the week went on. Pairing the hat with clean silhouettes and familiar, unfussy pieces made it feel intentional rather than tacky. Schiffer warns that things can quickly tip into costume territory when everything is dressed up at once—“like you’re trying too hard”—and she’s right. Letting the hat have its moment while keeping the rest of the look grounded is what makes it feel modern, wearable, and effortless.

Rule #3: Avoid Overstyling

The quickest way to make a pillbox feel intimidating is to overstyle everything around it—structured dinner jacket, pointed toe shoes, and precious pearls might be a no-go. Schiffer is a big believer in keeping things a little undone, especially when it comes to hair. “A low bun, loose hair, or undone texture keeps pillboxes from feeling precious,” she says, calling them a “bad hair day’s best friend.”

That relaxed approach extends to the rest of the outfit, too—tailored pants, denim, loafers, and other everyday staples help ground the look. Is it just me, or does this winter feel like it's gone on forever? I'm so ready for some sunshine, and it seems as if my skin is, too. The last few weeks, I've been suffering big time with dry skin, especially on my legs and shins. No matter what body cream or lotion I use, my skin still feels tight and itchy, so I decided it was time to speak to an expert about how to prevent scaly shins, and what mistakes I might be making in my current bodycare routine.

So, last week I reached out to Dr Martin Druelle, scientific communication director at leading French sensitive skin brand, Mixa, to ask him all of my burning questions. Interestingly enough, he told me that our shins have fewer oil glands, which is why they can feel particularly dry. Below, Dr Druelle shared his top tips for preventing scaly shins this winter, including the ingredients (and products) to look out for when shopping for bodycare and the mistakes most people make when caring for dry skin. 1. Switch to a Soap-Free Cleanser

First up, Dr Druelle recommends switching your shower gel to a soap-free cleanser. "Harsh soaps can strip the skin of its natural oils," he explains. "Use a lipid-enriched, pH-balanced body wash to protect the skin barrier right from the shower."

2. Use the "Three-Minute Rule"

I personally found this tip super helpful, as it wasn't something I'd heard before. After showering, Dr Druelle says you should apply your body cream or lotion within three minutes of towel-drying your skin. "This helps to 'lock in' the moisture while the skin is still slightly damp and most receptive," he tells me. I tested it out this morning after showering, and have already noticed just how soft my skin feels.

3. Target the Shins

As mentioned, although I've had dry skin all over my legs, it's my shins that are really suffering. Turns out, this isn't totally uncommon. "This area has fewer oil glands and is prone to 'crocodile skin'," says Dr Druelle. "Don't just swipe over them; massage your cream thoroughly to ensure deep absorption."

4. Avoid Very Hot Water

Look, it's cold outside, and in my opinion, there's nothing better than a super-hot shower to warm up after a long day. However, according to Dr Druelle, this isn't the smartest decision for those of us who suffer from dry skin. "Hot showers can exacerbate dryness," he says. "Opt for lukewarm water to prevent further dehydration of the epidermis."

5. Exfoliate Gently

Exfoliating the skin can be a great way to get rid of all those dead skin cells. However, Dr Druelle recommends using something gentle, rather than a harsh body scrub. "On dry skin, physical scrubs can be too abrasive," he says. "Use a cream with chemical exfoliants (like urea) that smooths the skin while providing intense hydration."

6. Look for the Right Ingredients

Last but by no means least, it's important to look for the right ingredients when shopping for body lotions and creams. "For dry to severely dry skin on the legs, I recommend focusing on ingredients that both hydrate and protect," says Dr Druelle. "Urea is a powerful humectant that also helps eliminate dead skin cells, leaving the legs feeling soft and deeply moisturised for days."

Alongside urea, Dr Druelle tells me that ceramides are great at rebuilding the skin barrier from within, whilst glycerin can provide deep hydration. You can also look for squalane, which creates a protective layer on the skin's surface for immediate comfort. "It’s a good option to consider as well for dry shins."

My mom is 62, and for the past few years, I've heard her talk about her dark spots from time to time. I think she has great skin (if mine looks anything like hers when I'm in my 60s, I'll be happy). That said, I know we're always our worst critics, and I'm a firm believer that if something bothers you, you should feel empowered to do something about it. So, when she formally asked me how to get rid of them a few weeks ago, I decided to help out. I'm a beauty editor, after all. What kind of daughter would I be if I didn't share the benefits of my position with my mom?

There was one caveat. As the bargain-buyer she is, my mom only wanted to spend around $150 on her entire routine. Luckily, I'm Who What Wear's resident drugstore enthusiast, so I had no shortage of products to share. On that note, check out my series Drugstore Heroes, where I ask industry insiders to share their diamond-in-the-rough recommendations.

Ahead, see the exact routine I recommended. Don't worry—it's all approved by derms (I checked).

1. Retinoids

My first recommendation was to incorporate a retinoid, specifically Naturium's Retinaldehyde Cream Serum 0.05%. (I'm a fan of Naturium and use a lot of its products myself, so it was an obvious choice, especially due to its budget-friendly price point.) Why this retinoid, specifically? Let me explain.

Retinoids are the gold standard for treating fine lines and wrinkles, rough and bumpy texture, and, yes, dark spots. This class of vitamin A ingredients includes retinol, retinyl esters, and retinaldehyde—also known as retinal. "Retinol can be very effective for dark spots because it increases cell turnover and helps disperse existing pigment, says Dermatologist Azadeh Shirazi, MD, FAAD. "In my practice, I recommend introducing it gradually to avoid irritation, especially in mature or sensitive skin. Shirazi specifically recommends her AziMD Lift + Renew Serum. "[It's] formulated to offer results similar to prescription Tretinoin without the side effects. This serum combines all-trans-retinol, bakuchiol, and antioxidants to improve discoloration. With regular use, expect visibly brighter, firmer skin in just four to eight weeks. Other well-formulated retinoids from brands like SkinBetter Science or Alastin can also be effective when used correctly."

Tama Tran, NP-C, is a board-certified aesthetic nurse practitioner. She says using too much retinol, too fast, can cause irritation, which can actually worsen dark spots. "Over-the-counter retinol is useful but less effective, whereas medical-grade or prescription RetinA is more effective," she says.

All non-prescription forms must convert to retinoic acid to be used by the skin. The gentler a retinoid is, the more conversions it needs to undergo before it can be used by the skin. The more potent a retinoid is, the fewer conversions it needs to undergo before it can be used by the skin. This handy conversion chart explains it.

My mom has used retinoids before and doesn't have super sensitive skin, so I recommended she go right to retinaldehyde. Since it only requires one step to convert to retinoic acid, it's the strongest nonprescription retinoid. It will increase cell turnover to help fade dark spots over time.

She started slow, per the expert's advice. Now, she uses Naturium's Retinaldehyde Cream Serum 0.05% about three to four times a week and always at night. Retinoids work best in the evening, due to the skin's natural repairative rhythm and the fact that they can increase sensitivity to the sun. On that note, if you're using retinoids, it's critical to wear sunscreen every day, but more on that in a minute.

2. Gentle Exfoliation

I recently discovered that my mom didn't have a consistent exfoliation routine until now. I recommended she use a standalone exfoliation product once a week. (This was per Shokeen's recommendation. She says you shouldn't use exfoliating acids more than one or two times per week.) I sent her a link to Versed's Doctor's Visit Instant Resurfacing Mask, which uses AHAs, BHAs, and enzymes to slough off dead skin and reveal brighter, smoother, more even skin in just two minutes. That's important, as my mom is a busy woman and I know she doesn't want to spend a ton of time on her skincare routine.

"In mature skin, dark spots are more than just pigment," Shirazi says. "They can also be due to the buildup of keratinocytes (skin cells), making them more challenging … As we age, our skin has accumulated more sun exposure, with more spots to treat. The skin also becomes lazy, meaning skin turnover slows down, thereby taking dark spots longer to fade, adding to greater cumulative sun exposure. That does not mean they are untreatable, but it does mean consistency and patience are essential. Supporting the skin barrier while gently encouraging renewal becomes especially important."

To put it another way, ingredients that gently increase cell turnover can be incredibly helpful, such as exfoliating acids. "Mature skin tends to hold onto pigment longer because turnover slows, and the skin barrier may be more fragile," Tran reiterates. "That means aggressive treatments can backfire. A steady, supportive approach usually delivers better and safer results over time."

3. Brightening Serums

Next, I told her she absolutely needs to incorporate a brightening serum into her routine. This serum contains a highly stabilized L-ascorbic acid complex, as well as a bioactive fruit blend, that douses the skin in antioxidants, fades dark spots, and defends against environmental aggressors. It's one of my favorite drugstore vitamin C serums!

Brightening serums are often rich in antioxidants, like vitamin C, which help control melanocyte activity (aka the skin cells that produce pigment). Not only that, but they can also protect the skin from free radicals in the environment, keeping signs and symptoms of aging like collagen degradation at bay. That's why I recommended she apply Naturium's Vitamin C Complex Serum every morning.

Take it from Shirazi, who says, "Vitamin C and antioxidants help by inhibiting excess melanin production and protecting skin from oxidative stress that can worsen discoloration," Shirazi says. "They also enhance overall brightness and even tone. I often recommend a stabilized vitamin C serum like AziMD Glow Serum, applied in the morning under sunscreen. Powered by a 20% vitamin C complex (L-ascorbic acid + tetrahexyldecyl ascorbate) and enriched with potent antioxidants, this serum visibly fades discoloration and improves skin tone."

I also suggested incorporating Naturium's Tranexamic Topical Acid 5% one or two nights a week, when she's skipping her retinoid. While this could be too much for someone with sensitive skin, my mom has had no trouble with it. In fact, it's already made a visible difference in her skin.

Tranexamic acid is a tyrosinase inhibitor. Tyrosinase is a key enzyme responsible for pigment production in our skin. So, it brightens the skin, evens tone, and fades dark spots—an obvious choice for the topic at hand!

Naturium's Tranexamic Serum goes three steps further, adding kojic acid (another great brightening ingredient), niacinamide, and licorice root extract to the equation. All of these help fade the appearance of dark spots. It's basically my mom's skincare secret weapon.

4. Sunscreen

It's always important to wear sunscreen from a skin-health perspective. That said, if you're trying to fade dark spots, it's even more imperative. That's because the more sun exposure you get—especially unprotected sun exposure—will lead to more pigment production. As dermatologist Divya Shokeen, MD, FAAD, puts it, "Without sunscreen, no pigment treatment will succeed."

My mom hates greasy, overly glowy sunscreens. In fact, she prefers matte SPF formulas. Enter La Roche-Posay's Anthelios Sunscreen Melt-In-Milk. It's lightweight, fast-absorbing, and oil-free. She literally has it sent on subscription, so she never runs out.

5. LED Mask

I know what you're thinking. This isn't in the $150-and-under budget! And you're right, however, I mention it because A) I got it for her, so she didn't technically spend the money, and B) it can indeed help fade dark spots if it is in your budget, but it's not crucial. I'll let the experts explain.

"LED masks, particularly those using red light, can support skin health by reducing inflammation and promoting cellular repair," Shirazi says. "They do not directly target pigment, but they can complement a brightening routine by improving overall skin function and helping topical treatments work more effectively over time."

Tran agrees, saying, "LED masks can be a helpful support tool, especially red light, which reduces inflammation and promotes healing. They do not erase pigment on their own, but they can improve skin resilience and help minimize triggers that lead to new discoloration." Shokeen puts it this way: "Think of LED as supportive therapy, not a standalone dark-spot solution."

This one uses two clinically recognized wavelengths of red and near-infrared light. The treatment only takes 10 minutes, and results appear in as few as four weeks. My mom uses hers *almost* every night.

Why Do Dark Spots Happen in the First Place?

"Dark spots, also known as hyperpigmentation, are areas where the skin produces excess melanin," Shirazi says. "This typically happens as a response to inflammation, sun exposure, hormonal changes, or skin injury such as acne. Melanocytes become overstimulated and deposit pigment unevenly in the skin, which is why these spots appear darker than the surrounding area."

Tran adds heat to the list. Yep, excessive heat exposure can cause dark spots, so be warned, sauna-sitters! "The issue is both pigment production and uneven distribution, which causes dark spots to linger long after the initial trigger is gone."

Shokeen says dark spots form as follows: "Melanocytes [pigment-producing cells] overproduce melanin. Melanin is transferred to surrounding keratinocytes [skin cells]. Pigment becomes unevenly distributed and sometimes drops into the dermis. In some cases (especially PIH), inflammation damages the basement membrane, allowing pigment to fall deeper, making it harder to fade." This is why it can be helpful to see a dermatologist when you're aiming to fade dark spots. As experts, they can look at your specific case and help you develop the most suitable treatment plan.

How Long Does It Take to Fade Dark Spots?

"Most people see visible improvement around the 10-to-12-week mark when they are consistent and protecting their skin properly," Tran says. (Yes, that means sunscreen, people!). "Long-standing or deeper pigmentation can take several months, and maintenance is key to keeping results stable."

If you have deep and/or long-lasting dark spots, Shokeen says to expect a 6-to-12 month timeline with maintenance required. That last part is essential. Once the dark spots start to fade, don't make the mistake of falling back into old or inconsistent habits. "Long-term maintenance is just as important as initial treatment to prevent recurrence," Shirazi says.

What Else Helps Fade Dark Spots?

Shirazi recommends looking to ingredients like niacinamide, azelaic acid, and gentle exfoliating acids to help reduce pigment long-term. Also, she suggests focusing on keeping the skin barrier strong and supported. "Barrier-supporting moisturizers are key so the skin can tolerate active ingredients without irritation," she says.

Shokeen agrees, saying that ingredients like ceramides, cholesterol, and fatty acids (all commonly found in barrier-supporting creams) actually reduce inflammation-induced pigment.

As a beauty editor who has been lucky to have my nails done by celebrity manicurists, they all have one thing in common. Nail prep is key. For some, this process can be hours long before nail polish, gel, or BIAB is applied. No matter what type of manicure you're having, nail prep makes all the difference.

Why Is Nail Prep Important?

"Nail prep is the foundation of any good manicure," says celebrity manicurist Georgia Rae. "You can apply the best products, but if the nail isn’t properly prepped, it simply won’t last. Good prep ensures better adhesion, a smoother finish and prevents issues like lifting, chipping or peeling," she says.

Ahead, Rae shares her tips on how to prep nails for your most beautiful manicure yet.

How to Prep Nails

1. Prep Cuticles

"I always start by gently pushing back and almost lifting the cuticle [the skin at the base of the nail] from the nail bed. I will then nip away or buff any non-living tissue," says Rae.

A nail tech is trained to remove the cuticle safely, so if you're doing your nails at home, you can gently push them back with a cuticle pusher or orange stick, rather than cutting them away. "Cuticles should be gently pushed back, not aggressively cut. Nipping away too much can lead to irritation," says Rae.

"At home, I would use a cuticle remover such as Essie’s Ready, Prep, Go Cuticle Remover (£15). Massage that into your nails and surrounding skin, and when rinsing away, use a nail brush to exfoliate and dry completely using a towel," she says.

"Using an orange wood stick, gently push back the cuticle. I then like to use the loop end of the Staleks Expert 51 tool (£7) to lift away any stubborn dead skin sitting on the nail plate, and then using a cuticle nipper to only nip away any obvious dead skin which will appear white once dry," she says.

2. File Nails

"After that, I move on to shaping," says Rae. "Always use a 240-grit nail file on natural nails, blunt the edges with another nail file to avoid nicks and check from every angle as you file to make sure they are uniform," she says.

Whether you're opting for almond nails, squoval nails, square nails or any other nail shape, take your time to ensure they're equally shaped on both hands and all at the same length to make them look neat. If you're shaping your nails into an oval or almond shape, take care not to file the sides of the nails down (known as the side walls) too much, as this can affect the structure of the nails and lead to breakage.

3. Prep the Nail Plate

"I will then cleanse the nail to remove dust and oils, and make sure everything is completely dry before application. My key tools are an orange wood stick, the Staleks Expert 51 tool, a small, thin 240-grit nail file, lint-free wipes and a nail cleanser," says Rae.

There are a few mistakes to avoid here, which include "over-buffing the nail, which can thin and weaken it," says Rae. She also advises making sure your hands and nails are free from any oils or products before applying your base coat or polish, as it can prevent it from adhering to the nail plate. This includes touching your nails, too. "This can leave behind oils, and even natural oils from your fingers can affect longevity," she says.

4. Apply Base Coat

"Always use a good base coat suited to your nail type," says Rae. Nail strengtheners make great nail base coats if you have weak, bendy nails. "Avoid soaking nails in water right before painting, as nails absorb water and can cause polish to lift once they’re dry," says Rae.

Once your base coat is dry, you can then go in with your favourite nail polish, and finish with a nail top coat.

4. Hand and Nail Care

The hand and nail care you keep up in between your manicures can go a long way to making your nail prep easier, especially when it comes to your cuticles. "Consistent nail care between manicures also plays a huge role in long-lasting results," says Rae.

"If you have a lot of built-up dead skin, it’s better not to try to remove it all in one go," she says. "Establish a hand and nail-care routine and allow this to be a gradual process."

Keep a hand cream on your nightstand, in your handbag or at your desk to keep hands and nails hydrated, and consider applying a cuticle oil daily to keep your nails and the surrounding cuticle soft and free from dry skin. Be mindful of cleaning products that can dry out your hands, and wear gloves if you're doing housework to protect your hands and nails.

With Google searches for "bouncy blowdry" up over 5,000% this month, it's unsurprising that so many of us want to know how to do a bouncy blowdry right now, especially for the party season. However, a bouncy blowout isn't one of the easiest of hairstyles to do. Hairstylists train for years to learn how to blow-dry hair and master the technique of using a round brush with a hair dryer to create '90s-supermodel levels of volume and bounce. But, thankfully for us non-professionals, the rise in hot brushes and hair multi-stylers means that achieving a salon-worthy bouncy blow-dry at home is easier than ever before.

However, there is absolutely an art to creating a bouncy blow-dry at home. And having sat in the chair of many top hairstylists in my decade as a beauty journalist, I've kept a keen eye on the expert tips and tricks that take your blow-dry to the next level. So, I called upon the expertise of Luke Hersheson, celebrity hairstylist and founder of Hershesons, to give me all the expert intel on how to do a bouncy blow-dry at home.

How to Do a Bouncy Blowdry

1. Prep Hair

I would argue that this is one of the most crucial steps to ensure your blow-dry is bouncy. Firstly, thoroughly wash your hair with shampoo twice. Ideally, I'd opt for a clarifying shampoo, such as Ouai Detox Shampoo (£28), which removes buildup from the roots and ensures that no lingering product or oil on the scalp can weigh down your hair. Use a lightweight conditioner just on the ends and thoroughly rinse to keep your hair feeling as light as possible.

After towel-drying, I prefer to use one or two styling or volumising hair products at most before blow-drying. I like Hair by Sam McKnight's Cool Girl Volume Blow Dry Foam (£28), which has a non-tacky, aerated texture to add volume, hold and oomph without the heavy stickiness of traditional hair mousse. If you have fine hair, then L'Oreal Professionnel Pli (£17) is a great lightweight styling spray to help lock in your style. I see this product in every hairstylist's kit bag, and it is a favourite of the pros for a reason.

And because we're using heat on our hair, I recommend misting through a hair heat protector such as K18's Biomimetic Hairscience Heatbounce Conditioning Heat Protectant (£48) to shield your lengths as you style. Hersheson's top pick is the Zhoosh Foam (£16). "It gives instant lift and movement without crunch, which makes the whole process easier," he says.

2. Rough-Dry

When you're doing a bouncy blow-dry, you want to work with hair that's 80-90% dry. "It will make your life a lot harder if you're starting with wet hair," says Hersheson. "Rough-dry first so you’re working on damp, not wet hair, and use the right product," he says. Concentrating on the roots, I like to flip my hair to the opposite side of where it naturally falls and the hair dryer nozzle to create lift and volume. You can also tip your head upside down and point your hair dryer upwards to the roots to encourage more lift.

3. Section Hair

I'd highly recommend sectioning your hair before blow-drying, as it will make your life so much easier. If you have long or thick hair, I'd especially recommend that you don't skip this step! I like to section off my hair into two parts by clipping the top half of my hair on top of my head before working on the bottom half of my hair first. You could also split your hair into quarters if you're blessed with a lot of hair. This will help you effectively blow-dry each section without battling with other parts of your hair getting in the way.

4. Blow-Dry

Now you're ready to blow-dry, you have two choices. You can use a hot brush or hair multi-styler with a round brush attachment to style, or, if you're particularly dexterous, you can use a traditional round brush with your hair dryer. I usually opt for the former; otherwise, it can become quite the arm workout!

"For the technique, think 90s supermodel: width, movement and confidence, not perfection. Work in medium sections, wrap, heat and set," says Hersheson. Start with taking a small section (around an inch or so is ideal—it should be able to comfortably fit around the round brush) and wrap the length around the brush. I like to roll the brush under and above the hair a couple of times to dry and polish the hair to add shine.

The direction you roll the hair into will also dictate the effect. Rolling it with your hair on top of the brush will result in more volume at the root. Rolling it with the hair sitting on the underside of your hair will give a face-framing effect. Another top tip is to hold the brush horizontally, rather than vertically, for extra volume at the root and more body through the lengths.

Ensure you're creating a comfortable amount of tension to help shape the hair as you dry each section. Take your time on each section, ensuring it's thoroughly dry before winding it all the way up. Then, you can roll the section all the way up the brush and hold it in place for a few seconds to lock in the style.

5. Use Cold Shot

Whether you use your cold shot setting on your hot brush or hair dryer will make or break whether your bouncy blow-dry holds or falls flat. Heating your hair allows you to manipulate the shape, but cooling it back down again is paramount to locking it in. "The setting stage is what makes the blow-dry last," says Hersheson. "And if you’re short on time, focus on the front. Shaping the face frame instantly makes the whole look feel more polished," he says.

I like to use the cold shot button on my hot brush for 10 seconds, or until the hair feels cooler to the touch, before unravelling the section from the brush. Don't skip this step, as it will ensure your style stays bouncy.

6. Set in Rollers

Using some Velcro rollers will help to further set your hair in place. That’s what locks everything in and gives you glossy, touchable bounce that lasts. I like to do this as soon as I've released my hair from the brush after using the cold shot setting. Wrap the end of the section around the roller and gently roll it up the length of your hair. You'll want to follow the same direction you used to blow-dry the section, and then use a hair clip to secure the roller in place. Repeat steps four to six on each section and pop it in a roller as soon as you've blow-dried it.

Like the round brush or hot brush you're using, the size of the rollers will also dictate the outcome. For a bouncy blow-dry, you want to use medium to large-sized rollers for maximum body and bounce. Smaller rollers, on the other hand, will create a tighter curl. 7. Leave to Cool

Now your hair is set in rollers, you want to leave them in for as long as you possibly can, but at a minimum for 15-30 minutes. The longer they're in your hair, the longer your style will last, so don't be tempted to take them out too early. To help speed up the process, you can use the cold shot button on your hair dryer at a low speed to gently cool your hair while it sets in the rollers.

8. Remove Rollers

Now it's time for the big reveal. Start on the underside of your head and gently unclip each roller, gently rolling it down to remove it, and you should have some bouncy curls. Personally, I'd avoid using a hairbrush at this stage and instead use your fingers to gently coax your hair into place without disturbing the shape of the hair too much. "When brushing out, don’t panic at large curls," says Hersheson. "It’s easier to take out volume than add it. Use a wide-toothed comb instead of a flat brush, and stop combing when you hit the movement you want," he says.

For extra volume and root lift, you can flip your hair into a side parting. If you already wear your hair in a side parting, try flipping it over to the opposite side for more root lift. I like to push the front section back and allow it to naturally fall into place. But the beauty of a bouncy blow-dry is that whichever way you wear it, you should have lots of bouncy volume.

9. Finishing Products

Now that you have removed all of your rollers, you can mist through some hairspray to lock in the style. You could even use some texturising spray or a volumising spray at the roots for extra root lift, but avoid overloading the hair with too much product. Applying too much can weigh down the lengths and cause your bouncy blow-dry to drop. So avoid undoing your hard work and start with a light misting and build up.

10. The Result

And there you have your bouncy blow-dry! To make it last, I'd avoid touching your hair too much (which can make the bounce drop) and, if you want to retain the volume the next day, you can wear your hair in a low, loose bun tied with a satiny scrunchie, or by sleeping on a silk pillowcase. Both help to reduce friction on your hair, so you can enjoy your bouncy blow-dry well into your second-day hair.

In the beauty space, skincare can often be the most confusing for many. Even as a beauty editor, it's hard for me to sift through the conflicting advice you can see flying around. "If you chop and change products too much, you’ll never end up seeing the benefits of each ingredient, and your skin is perpetually trying to adjust to different things," she says.

"A consistent skincare routine supports the skin’s barrier function, which is its primary defense against environmental stressors, pathogens and transepidermal water loss," she adds. "When the barrier is intact, inflammation, dehydration and premature ageing are reduced. A structured regimen also allows for targeted treatment, maintains skin homeostasis, optimises cell turnover and preserves long-term skin health," she says.

Morning Skincare Routine

1. Cleanser

Cleansing with a face wash is the first step of your routine. "If you don’t have sebaceous or oily skin, I usually recommend skipping a morning cleanse as it can unnecessarily strip the skin. If you are more oily, then a gentle cleanse with an unfragranced cleanser with minimal acids is appropriate for the morning," says Hartley. "I recommend a spritz with a hypochlorous spray (like Clinisoothe Skin Purifier, £15), which is antibacterial and will reset your skin's pH for optimal penetration of skincare," she says.

2. Toner

This step isn't essential, but a toner can be helpful after cleansing and before using your serums. "I find that most people don’t actually know why they are toning," says Hartley. "Toners help to reestablish the skin's pH (4.5-5.5) after washing with water (7.5-8.5). This helps to prep the skin for actives and optimise penetration," she says.

For congested and acne-prone skin types, a toner with salicylic acid can help to unclog pores and can be applied by sweeping it over your skin with a cotton round. Dry skin types may prefer a milky toner, which helps to add more moisture while balancing the skin pH.

3. Serums and Actives

Next in your routine are serums, which are the powerhouse of your skincare routine and are the key step to treating your specific skincare concerns.

"Here, you can apply serums containing antioxidants, humectants or exfoliating acids," says Hartley. "A simple rule is to apply products from the thinnest to to thickest consistency, allowing each layer to penetrate effectively without obstruction," she says. "This sometimes means waiting for a product to penetrate before applying the next layer."

A vitamin C serum is a great ingredient to apply to your skin in your morning routine. "The morning non-negotiable is your antioxidant serum. This will protect the skin from environmental damage," says Hartley. Another good all-rounder is a hyaluronic acid serum, which will help to hydrate and plump the skin.

4. Eye Cream

Whether you use an eye cream really comes down to personal preference. For example, you may prefer to take your hyaluronic acid serum up to your eye area and forgo eye cream altogether. Or, you may prefer some additional hydration and benefits that an eye cream can bring to the eye area, particularly for dark circles or puffiness. If you want to use an eye cream, make sure to apply it before your moisturiser, helping the ingredients to absorb effectively.

5. Mosturiser

Next up is your moisturiser. "To hydrate and protect the skin, you can seal in moisture with a suitable emollient or occlusive," says Hartley.

Dry skin types can benefit from a moisturiser for dry skin, which is generally more creamy and heavier in texture, while those with combination and oily skin may prefer a gel moisturiser that is lighter and more mattifying. That being said, if you feel like your skin doesn't need moisturiser, you can skip moisturiser and use your SPF instead if you find it hydrating enough.

6. SPF

The last step of your morning routine should be your SPF. And this step is a non-negotiable. "SPF is the most critical step for preventing photo-ageing and oxidative stress," says Hartley. Ideally, you want to look for a broad-spectrum formula with an SPF of at least 30 or 50.

As mentioned, you can always skip your moisturiser and go straight in with an SPF after your serums if you find moisturiser and SPF too heavy together. Evening Skincare Routine

1. Makeup Remover

If you've been wearing makeup throughout the day, then this step is really important to thoroughly remove it and prevent breakouts. Cleansing balms and cleansing oils are ideal for removing heavier makeup like foundation. However, a classic micellar water will also do the job.

"The evening cleanse is important, removing makeup, impurities and the sebum buildup for the day," says Hartley. "Double cleansing or pre-cleansing with an oil isn’t necessary, but if it helps to remove makeup, that’s fine," she says. "I prefer an unperfumed micellar water for removing stubborn makeup, followed by a cleanse with gentle acids depending on your skin type to exfoliate the outer layer and break down oil in the pores."

2. Cleanser

If you're wearing light makeup (such as a skin tint or tinted SPF), you may find this step is enough to remove it. And you've forgone makeup altogether, you can go straight in with your cleanser to remove any impurities. The formulation should come down to your preferences and skincare concerns, but a gently foaming cleanser or milky cleanser is ideal to remove any excess buildup.

3. Toner

Like in your morning routine, this step isn't essential. But it can be helpful to use this as an opportunity to exfoliate with acids, or to add a layer of hydration prior to your evening serums. You can also use a hypochlorous spray at this stage if you prefer.

4. Serum and Actives

Next, you can apply your serums. While your morning serum should ideally be an antioxidant, for the evening, a retinol serum or peptide serum is a good choice to address fine lines and pigmentation.

"Apply your actives directly on cleansed (or toned) skin for optimal penetration," says Hartley. "All clinical testing of active ingredients is directly on skin ,meaning you won’t get the intended results if you layer other products first. So if you have multiple actives or serums, start in order or your key priority," she says.

5. Eye Cream

Much like your morning skincare routine, an eye cream isn't an essential, but can be helpful if you want to directly target eye concerns like wrinkles, dark circles and puffiness. Be sure to apply it before your moisturiser—not after—to ensure the ingredients absorb properly, rather than sitting on top of your night cream or moisturiser.

6. Moisturiser

"To finish your nighttime skincare routine, you can lock in your products with a light moisturiser," says Hartley. You don't have to buy a separate night cream (your usual daytime moisturiser is usually just fine); however, it can be helpful to have a more nourishing formula alongside a lightweight moisturiser to see your skin through changes in the environment and the seasons.

As a beauty editor who studies hair trends for a living, I'm surprisingly unadventurous when it comes to styling my hair. If I am doing it, though, nine times out of 10, I'll be using a curling wand to create loose waves. I like hair that looks effortless and never too "done", and crucially, any hairstyle I'm doing has to be quick and easy. Loose waves tick all the boxes for me.

Coincidentally, it's often the low-maintenance hairstyle that gets me the most compliments, and I always have people asking me how to do loose waves on their own hair. Having sat in the chair of some of the best salons and spoken to celebrity hairstylists throughout my decade in the industry, I've picked up plenty of tips on exactly how to do loose waves. Ahead, I'm sharing my step-by-step guide to getting effortless waves. From the best curling wands to the styling products that make all the difference, here's everything I've learned about creating loose waves. And trust me: it honestly couldn't be easier.

How to Do Loose Waves

1. Smooth and Prep

First things first, you want to start with clean, dry hair. If you have naturally curly hair, you'll want to first straighten your lengths with a hair straightener as a starting point. Gently brush to detangle, and prep with a heat protectant.

It can be tricky to find heat protectants that work on dry hair (most are better suited to damp hair pre-blow-dry), but my favourite is Oribe Gold Lust Dry Heat Protection (£42). It's an aerosol spray, so it doesn't make your hair wet, and it applies evenly in a light, non-sticky veil. Another hairstylist favourite is L'Oréal Professionnel Flex Pli (£17)—which you'll find in all the best salons, FYI—as it helps to hold your style in place whilst protecting from heat. I recommend this one if your hair doesn't hold a curl well.

2. Choose Your Wand

When you're creating loose waves, the size of your curling wand is so important. Generally speaking, the larger the wand or tong, the larger and looser the curl. The smaller the barrel, the tighter and smaller the curl.

My favourite curling wand for loose waves is the GHD Chronos Curve Max Wand (£189). It has a large 38mm barrel, which gives each section of hair a perfectly loose and effortless curl. This is a great size if you have long hair, as you can wrap the entire length around the barrel easily. However, you can still achieve loose waves if you own a smaller curling wand and don't want to buy another larger styling tool.

In fact, if you have hair that doesn't hold a curl well, then I'd actually recommend using a smaller curling wand instead. As you release each curl from the barrel, you can gently tug on the end to stretch the hair as it cools to soften the curl, all whilst getting the benefit of the hold from a tighter curl.

3. Choose Curl Direction

You can achieve different looks depending on the direction in which you curl the hair. When I style my loose waves, I like to curl away from my face on either side and continue in the same direction towards the back. This results in a more uniform, loose wave ripple throughout the lengths and looks more polished.

If you prefer more of a beachy texture, you can alternate the curl direction as you go. Start by curling away from the face around the front sections, alternating the curl direction around the head. I also find that this results in more volume and texture, as the curls offset each other and create the illusion of thicker, volumised hair, so it's ideal for thin hair types. Experiment and see which effect works best for you.

4. Wiggle the Wand

I picked up this tip from celebrity hairstylist Halley Brisker (watch the video of him using this technique on my hair here), who told me that wiggling the wand helps create an effortless-looking loose wave. As you hold your hair around the barrel, you can gently wiggle the wand up and down the section length. This results in a looser, softer curl, which makes the wave look more natural than an overly styled ringlet lot of curling wands and tongs deliver. If you curl a section and it's looking too springy, you can gently pull on the end whilst the hair is warm to elongate the curl as it cools.

5. Brush It Out

Once your hair has cooled and set into place, use your fingers to gently break up the curls. It's important to do this when the hair has cooled, because if you disturb the curls whilst still warm, it can affect the hold. Using your fingers to gently shake out the curls helps create that undone look; however, if you want something more polished, you can also use a wide-tooth comb or hairbrush to brush out the curls, particularly if they look too ringlet-y. I find this method makes the overall effect softer and glossier, whilst using your fingers helps retain texture.

6. Finishing Products

There are a few different ways you can finish and set your style. I like to run through a few drops of a hair oil or hair serum to add smoothness, tame flyaways and boost shine. But if you want more piecey waves, then a texturising spray can add texture and volume for that undone, just-rolled-out-of-bed dishevelledness (in the best way).

If you have fine hair or hair that doesn't hold a curl, then I'd recommend not overloading your lengths with too much product. A light misting of hairspray will help to keep your style in place without making your hair feel crispy.

To tame any rogue flyaways around the crown, I like to gently roll the curling wand (as it's cooling down) over the top of my head, carefully smoothing and sealing any frizz. You can then set them in place with a little hairspray (I like to apply a little to my hands first, then smooth the hair with my palms for a sleek result).

7. The Result

And there you have your loose waves. To help your style last for as long as possible, I recommend sleeping with your hair in a loose bun with a silky scrunchie or a silk pillowcase to keep the curl memory and prevent friction on your hair. This helps retain the style the following day and means you only need to go over a few sections with your wand to refresh the style on second-day hair.

Among dozens of different skin concerns people face on a daily basis, dark spots and dull skin are some of the hardest cases to crack. As most derms and skincare-obsessed consumers know, some skin care woes take longer to address than others. For discoloration and dullness though, there is one particular ingredient that can speed up healing and bring back brightness. Enter: tumeric.

Turmeric has been used over the course of hundreds of years and has proven to have long-lasting benefits for skin. The active compound in turmeric, curcumin, is what really drives the benefits because of its potent anti-inflammatory,  antimicrobial, antineoplastic, and antioxidant properties, which combats free-radical damage, according to board-certified dermatologist Purvisha Patel. “Some studies suggest that turmeric can also support wound healing and boost collagen production, which helps maintain skin strength and elasticity,” adds board-certified dermatologist and founder of FACET Dermatology, Geeta Yadav.

While consuming turmeric has its own benefits, you can also apply it topically in bodycare products like washes and soaps. These formulas typically contain turmeric, in addition to a few other hydrating ingredients to nourish skin and treat hyperpigmentation and dryness. But before getting into our top picks, keep reading to learn about the benefits, risks, and the best ways to use turmeric soap.

1. It improves the appearance of dark spots.

If you struggle with dark spots or uneven skin tone, turmeric soap can help restore brighter, more even skin. The science is simple: turmeric has an active compound called curcumin that makes it effective in treating dark spots. "Some people notice that turmeric soap can help with dark spots or uneven skin tone," says Yadav. "Curcumin may slow down melanin production, which is responsible for pigmentation, leading to a more even-looking complexion."

Whether you deal with stubborn acne scars or the occasional breakout, turmeric soap has several antibacterial and anti-inflammatory properties that can ease both. "[It] decreases microbial growth sebum production and inflammation, which helps with breakouts," says Patel. Yadav adds that these same properties support healing, which can result in fewer post-acne marks and scarring.

The curcumin in turmeric has anti-inflammatory and antimicrobial properties that can calm redness and irritation in addition to slowing down overactive skin cell growth, according to Yadav. "It has been used for centuries in Eastern Medicine to combat cancers, auto-immune diseases and skin conditions such as psoriasis, vitiligo and acne," adds Patel. " It has been shown in scientific studies time and time again to help skin conditions, both when ingested and used topically."

Free radicals and sun damage (in addition to other conditions that impact the skin's surface require antioxidants for recovery. Turmeric soap can help neutralize oxidative stress and support the skin’s natural defense system, which can keep the skin looking healthier and more resilient over time thanks to the curcumin, according to Yadav. Turmeric also contains a small amount of vitamin C, a helpful ingredient for lightening any discoloration.

Turmeric isn't the most hydrating ingredient for your skin, but there is some benefit to it. "The curcumin in turmeric may support the skin’s ability to hold moisture by improving barrier function and boosting natural hydrating substances in the skin," explains Yadav. How often should you use turmeric soap?

Any dermatologist will tell you there's no magic overnight fix to skin concerns like discoloration, stubborn acne and breakouts, and dark spots. That said, there's no set frequency of use for how often you should be using turmeric soap. But as a guide, Yadav recommends using it once or twice a day. "Improvements would take a few weeks to notice because improvement in pigmentation is always a slow process," she says. Patel notes that it can also be left on overnight as a spot treatment for acne.

Side Effects of Turmeric Soap

Before using any new skincare product for the first time, it's always best to do a patch test on a small area of skin, allowing the product to sit for a few minutes to rule out the possibility of an allergic reaction. However, if you do experience side effects like the ones we list below, Yadav reassures that these reactions are usually temporary and improve once use is reduced or stopped. Here's what to look out for:

• Mild redness
• Itchy skin
• Dryness (especially common for sensitive skin if a product is used too often)
• Stains (if used it it's purest form)

Who shouldn't use turmeric soap?

Turmeric is safe for most people, but those with a known allergy to it should avoid it. As mentioned above, those with sensitive skin should also do a patch test. "People with very sensitive skin should be cautious or avoid turmeric soap altogether," says Yadav. "Although it is natural, it can still cause irritation or allergic reactions in some individuals."

Patel adds that some turmeric soaps might also contain kojic acid—another ingredient that is sometimes used for treating acne and brightening skin. In this case, users may notice increased sensitivity to the sun, which means. sunscreen is especially important.

As an esthetician, I get asked this question about skincare routines more often than you might think: “Can I pop this pimple?” And my answer, almost every time, is the same: no. Really. My professional stance is clear—squeezing breakouts is one of the fastest ways to make a minor skin nuisance turn into a long-term regret. When you pop a pimple, you risk pushing bacteria deeper into the skin, increasing inflammation, prolonging healing time, and, worst of all, leaving a permanent mark or scar. It’s like turning a one-day inconvenience into a one-year reminder. Plus, even if the pimple looks small and harmless on the surface, the damage underneath is often invisible, but very real.

With that said, I understand why so many people can’t resist. There’s an undeniable satisfaction in seeing a blemish finally release what’s inside. Many of my clients confess that the urge hits them at the worst possible moments—right before an important event or a night out. And while I would never recommend it as a frequent solution, I like to take a judgment-free, educated approach. If someone is going to pop a pimple anyway, it’s far safer to do it properly, minimising the risk of scarring, infection, or irritation as much as possible. My job is to provide a method that reduces these risks, helping clients navigate the temptation without compromising their skin health.

A Step-By-Step Guide to Popping Pimples

Step 1: Assess the Pimple

Before you reach for anything, take a close look at the pimple. Not all spots are created equal, and knowing whether it can safely be popped is critical. Whiteheads with a visible, soft tip are usually ready for gentle extraction, while red, inflamed pustules, cystic pimples, or nodules should never be squeezed. These deeper blemishes are highly prone to scarring and infection if manipulated. Look for swelling, tenderness and a clearly defined head. If it doesn’t feel ready, leave it alone and wait for a head to appear. Assessing the pimple first prevents unnecessary trauma and ensures that only blemishes likely to respond safely are addressed.

Step 2: Cleanse Thoroughly

Before you even consider touching a pimple, the first step is to cleanse both your hands and face meticulously. Wash your hands for at least 30 seconds with soap and warm water to remove oils, dirt and bacteria. Then, gently cleanse your face with a mild, non-comedogenic face wash to ensure the area around the pimple is clean and free from debris.

After cleansing, apply a warm compress to the pimple for 5–10 minutes. The warmth softens the skin and draws pus to the surface, making the pimple easier to extract. Skipping this step increases the risk of pushing bacteria deeper and causing inflammation.

Step 3: Sterilise Skin

Next, clean the pimple and surrounding skin with an alcohol pad or antiseptic solution. This step is crucial because introducing bacteria to an open pore can quickly lead to infection or a worsening breakout.

Step 4: Apply Gentle Pressure

Now comes the fun part. Using two clean cotton swabs, gently press around the pimple, starting from the sides rather than the top. The goal is to encourage the pus to come out naturally, without forcing it, so squeeze the skin around the spot, rather than the spot itself. Wipe any pus away using a clean cotton pad.

If the pimple doesn’t release easily (I have a strict three squeezes rule), stop immediately—forcing it can rupture surrounding tissue, increase inflammation, and even cause scarring. Patience is key here. Many people rush and press too hard, but slow, controlled pressure helps minimise damage and keeps the surrounding skin intact. You’re coaxing the pimple out, not fighting it.

Step 5: Aftercare

After the pimple has been drained, aftercare is crucial. Mist your face with a hypochlorous acid spray (such as Clinisoothe), then when dry, apply a gentle spot treatment containing antibacterial or anti-inflammatory ingredients, such as salicylic acid, benzoyl peroxide, or tea tree oil. These help prevent infection and calm redness. Avoid touching or picking at the area afterwards, as even slight irritation can prolong healing.

Cleanse your hands again and consider using a layer of soothing moisturiser to support barrier repair. So, you bought the Dyson Airwrap (or you're planning to). And now you're probably wondering how to use it. As a hair-obsessed beauty editor who has been the proud owner of the Dyson Airwrap for four years (and who has tried three different models of the hair multistyler), even I can admit that it takes a little know-how and practice to master. With more attachments than a standard hot brush, you need to have a little patience and know-how to get to grips with this airstyler.

In fact, I'm often asked by my colleagues and friends how to use the Dyson Airwrap (and my For You Page is filled with people who are unsure, too), so I figured it was high time I put pen to paper with a step-by-step guide including all the tips and tricks on getting the most from your attachments, and, most importantly, making your curls last. This is by far the question I get asked the most when it comes to the Dyson Airwrap—and yes, it can be done.

Plus, with the launch of the new Dyson Coandax2, the latest Airwrap model, I decided to tick two boxes at once and put it to the test at the same time. So, I've done all the legwork and have created a step-by-step guide on how to use the Dyson Airwrap for your bounciest blow-dry yet.

How to Use the Dyson Airwrap

1. Prep Your Hair

I'd argue that this is the most important step. If you're going for a bouncy blow-dry look, I have some pointers. Firstly, ensure your hair is thoroughly shampooed (ideally with a clarifying shampoo) to rid your roots of product build-up and oil that can weigh it down and make your style fall flat, especially if you have fine or thin hair. When the hair is cleansed, your roots will have more volume, and the lengths will have more bounce.

As someone with thick and wavy frizz-prone hair, my favourite shampoos are Ouai Detox Shampoo (£28) and Philip Kingsley Flaky/Itchy Scalp Shampoo (£31). I'd also recommend using a lightweight conditioner to avoid weighing down the ends. I love Kérastase Premiere Bond Advanced Conditioner (£41), or I like Living Proof Perfect Hair Day Hair Gloss (£30) as a hair-gloss treatment for added shine.

On towel-dried hair, I like to apply a heat-protectant spray (here, I'm using Kérastase Gloss Absolu Anti-Frizz Glaze Milk (£43), and depending on your hair type, you may also like to use a hair mousse, a hair serum or volumising products before styling to help give your hair extra hold, volume and bounce. Just be careful not to overload it with too much product.

A favourite of mine is Hair by Sam McKnight Cool Girl Volume Blow Dry Foam (£28), which has a foam texture that helps to lock in the style without weighing hair down, and I'll run a little of Dyson's Chitosan Pre-Style Cream (£26) through my lengths to help prep my hair. I also swear by my trusty Wet Brush Detangler Brush (£8) to detangle my hair before styling and help distribute the product through the lengths.

2. Rough Dry

A very important PSA: You want to use your Aiwrap on hair that's 80% dry, so don't go straight in on wet hair! Start by rough-drying with the hair dryer attachment, paying attention to the roots. I like my roots to be totally dry, as it's harder to fully dry them with the other Airwrap attachments (especially if you have thick hair), and any dampness at the roots will make your style fall out more quickly. If you want an extra boost of volume here, tip your head upside down as you dry. You'll want to keep a little bit of moisture in your lengths before using the curling barrels, round brush or paddle brush, so leave the rest of your hair about 80-90% dry.

If you're going for a straight and sleek look, you can use the paddle-brush attachment to smooth and stretch the hair as you dry, before finishing with the Airsmooth attachment to smooth any remaining frizz or flyaways. Or, if you own one of the older Dyson Airwrap models, switch the hair dryer attachment to the Flyaway Smoother setting. If you want a bouncy look, scroll on.

3. Round Brush

The round-brush attachment is one of my favourites that the Airwrap offers. If you have a fringe or face-framing layers, I'd recommend using this to style them, but I'd also use this attachment throughout your entire head if you find your hair doesn't hold a curl with the curling barrels. With this one, you can achieve the necessary tension needed to create long-lasting styles with a bouncy blow-dry effect. When using the round-brush attachment, you want to twirl a section of hair around it a couple of times, rolling your hair over it for more volume at the root, or under it, like I am above, for a face-framing, soft curl.

And here's the secret to making it last. Once your section is fully dry and you've run the round brush through it a couple of times, you want to roll the entire length of that section of hair around it and use the cold-shot button to cool the hair. Alternatively, you could use hair rollers to help the curls set as the hair cools. Cold air will help lock in the style, whereas releasing the hair too soon when it remains warm will make your style drop more quickly.

Think of it like a candle: when the wax is warm, it's fluid and malleable, but when it cools, it solidifies into shape. The same goes for your hair, so get to know your cold-shot button and use it for a lot longer than you think you need to bring your hair from hot to cool. I'd go for at least 10 seconds for each section, or longer for thicker hair.

4. Curl

You have two curling attachments to choose from: the larger barrel or the narrower one. The former will give you a soft, looser curl, whilst the smaller barrel will result in tighter curls. If your curls drop out quickly, go for the narrower barrel. Similarly, if your hair is all one length (no layers), you may also benefit from using this version. The heavier your hair, the more the curl will drop, so a tighter curl is your best bet at getting your style to last. However, if you want a soft ripple through your hair, the larger barrel will deliver a much softer curl. I also like to use this size on my face-framing layers, which tend to hold a curl better and so don't require as much spring.

Now you've chosen your curling barrel, take a 1 to 2" section and allow the barrel to latch onto the ends of your hair. Smaller sections are best for the air and heat to reach the hair evenly; if the section is too large, your Airwrap has to work harder to dry and style. Gently guide your hair as it wraps around the barrel.

The thickness, texture and length of your hair will determine how long to hold the curl in place. On the newer Coandax2 model, you can pair it with the MyDyson app, which helps you determine the perfect amount of time for you (and it will auto-sync with your Airwrap via Bluetooth, so you don't even have to touch any of the buttons, which is a really great feature of the new model). But, as a general rule of thumb, you want to hold it until your hair feels dry to the touch (usually 10 to 15 seconds is enough once the strands are fully wrapped around the barrel).

As I mentioned in the previous section, it's crucial to let your hair fully cool before releasing the section from the barrel. I like to use the cold-shot button for 10 to 15 seconds to allow the hair to fully cool and set. This is the most common mistake I see people making with their Airwraps, and it will affect how well your style lasts. When you come to release the curl, ensure that the airflow has also stopped.

Your curl direction will also affect the overall result. Curling in one direction will give a face-framing, glamorous look, whilst alternating the curl direction will give you a more beachy and volumised finish. I like to curl all in the same direction, and flick the direction switch on as I come to do the other side of my hair.

5. Brush Out

If your result resembles 2002 prom-queen curls, don't panic. You can gently rake your fingers through your lengths to soften the curl, though they will also drop out slightly throughout the day, so you don't want to disturb them too much with a hairbrush or comb. Your fingertips are enough to gently tease out the curls in any places you feel need it.

6. Smooth

If you're frizz-prone, the Airsmooth attachment (or the smoothing setting on the older Airwrap hair dryer) is great for smoothing any stragglers around your crown. I'd avoid running it down the full length of your hair so you don't disturb your curls, but I like to use it around the roots to tuck in flyaways for a smoother result.

If you're straightening your hair with the Airwrap, however, this is a great final step to add a polished finish. Whilst it won't completely straighten your hair like the Dyson Airstrait will, it's great as a finishing step for extra smoothness and shine, and for topping up second-day hair that's developed flyaways or frizz.

7. Hair Products

Once you're happy with your styling, you can apply some product to finish and enhance the hold. I like using a lightweight hair oil or serum to smooth and add a glossy shine. My personal favourites are Kérastase Gloss Absolu Glaze Drops (£39) and Virtue Healing Oil (£43), which is so lightweight, even on fine hair, or the new Dyson Chitosan Post-Style Serum (£50).

You can also add a light touch of hairspray to each curl to keep your style in place; I like Oribe's Free Style Hairspray (£43), which adds flexible hold and prevents hair from feeling crispy. Alternatively, a texturising spray like Hair by Sam McKnight Cool Girl Texture Mist (£28) can give a relaxed, undone look if you feel your hair is looking too polished, and it will also add some grip.

Be careful not to overload your hair with product to avoid weighing it down and encouraging the curls to drop more quickly. A light touch is always best, so go easy.

8. The Result

I have a couple of final tips to make your curls go the extra mile. Firstly, avoid touching your hair too much throughout the day, which can, again, make the curls drop more quickly. I also like to wear my hair in a loose bun overnight using a silky scrunchie and sleep on a silk pillowcase to help keep my blow-dry looking good into the next day.

Personally, I find that the most long-lasting curls come from a curling wand or tong, but the beauty of the Dyson Airwrap is that it uses far less heat compared to other styling tools. And, you can always touch up your curls the following day if needed, by lightly dampening any sections that need it and re-curling them for extra bounce on second-day hair.

Every once in a while, there's a jacket trend that manages to take us by surprise, akin to the sensation of getting caught in a rainstorm on an otherwise sunny fall day—windbreakers being one of the more recent examples of this phenomenon. Whether you prefer to refer to them as anoraks, parkas, or soft shells, there's no denying that this specific type of coat has taken the fashion world by storm (excuse the pun), as it's been spotted across the S/S 25 and F/W 25 collections. But don't be fooled—this trend is by no means a ploy to push pragmatism by designers, as we saw them push the boundaries of how we perceive this otherwise utilitarian rain jacket.

From The Row and Gucci's more minimalist-leaning take on this trend in the form of monotone windbreaker looks to the maximalist-coded styling that paired sportswear with evening wear (as seen at Miu Miu, Burberry, and Prada), there is no shortage of examples showing how to style windbreakers in a way that is, dare we say, actually cool.

It's no wonder, then, that we've seen the style set slowly adopt this jacket trend, as evidenced by the sheer number of stylish people wearing it out in the wild. But it's not just that we've seen the style take over social media too, but that it's being styled with another staple in a way that's equally surprising: leggings. The concept of wearing a windbreak with plain leggings might not seem groundbreaking, we know, but we'd argue that how the fashion crowd has taken cues from the runway to transform these otherwise pragmatic pieces with creative styling is groundbreaking. What's the proof, you ask? Styling Notes: What's another way you can make styling a windbreaker with plain leggings feel cool? Embrace color blocking. There's something so visually intriguing about styling a white anorak jacket with contrasting black leggings; it gives the pieces the perfect pop. You can inject further visual interest into your look by incorporating playful accessories, such as oversize sunglasses, a suede hobo bag, and even funky ballet flats.

Styling Notes: Embracing color-blocking isn't the only way you can make a windbreaker and leggings outfit look chic. Frankly, there's no better way to make an otherwise "basic" parka jacket look a little bougier than by embracing texture. Opt for a parka with a coated finish that looks like leather or pair your outfit with faux-fur accessories. Styling Notes: Beyond texture and color, another way we've seen the style set get creative with this otherwise "simple" outfit formula is through layering. It's a simple styling hack, but it's an effective way to elevate these sporty pieces for everyday life.
