Carley Fortune has a lot to celebrate. Last month, she released her fifth romance novel, Our Perfect Storm, before having not one, not two but three books (Every Summer After, One Golden Summer, and Our Perfect Storm) hit the New York Times best seller list at the same time—a first for the Canadian author. She also just wrapped up a nationwide press tour for Every Year After, the Amazon Prime Video series adaptation of her breakout summer read, which included stops at The Kelly Clarkson Show, Empire State Building, and Tribeca Film Festival.

Whether she's penning a new page-turner or meticulously planning her latest press tour looks, Fortune is all about creating an experience for her fans. For the latter, that means crafting a fashion theme that cheekily nods to the book she's promoting and incorporating a few Easter eggs for good measure. As if we needed another reason to be a fan of Fortune.

For the Every Year After press tour, Fortune enlisted the help of stylist Amber Watkins to create a summer-inspired wardrobe that could just as easily suit a stylish weekend at Barry's Bay. Here, she breaks it down, including the Canadian brands she loves. Plus, she shares the title on her summer reading list.

You put a lot of thought into your press tour looks. You just wrapped your book tour for your latest book, Our Perfect Storm, which had its own fashion theme. How soon did you begin outfit planning, and what does that process look like? Do you work with a stylist or source yourself?

I think of my book-tour events like a show. I want to give the audience an incredible experience, and fashion is an important part of that. I worked with a stylist, Amber Watkins, to craft a wardrobe that pulled from Our Perfect Storm's moody purple cover. We started discussing the vibe and palette about a month before my tour started, and then Amber created a mood board to make sure we were on the same page before she began pulling clothes.

This month is all about Every Year After. How did you want to approach your looks for this press tour? Is there a theme or style that connects all of your looks?

The vibe was "cottage but make it fashion"—cotton dresses, denim, a little bit of patchwork—all in tones of blue and cream. We also wanted a big wow moment for the Tribeca Film Festival premiere of the show, and I wanted to wear a Canadian designer. We borrowed the most incredible hand-beaded gown from Anmol Handa, a rising star who had just shown the look at Fashion Art Toronto.

If you could encapsulate your Every Year After press looks into three words, what would they be?

Lake girl in the city. Sorry, that's five words.

For eagle-eyed fans, are there any Every Year After Easter eggs in your outfits?

Yes! There's a piece of jewelry that my husband had made for me, which I wore for almost every appearance.

How would you say these looks are an extension of your everyday style?

I'm a sucker for a great shoe, and we found the most spectacular shoes. We mixed in Canadian labels that I love, like Smythe and Hilary MacMillan, and took casual pieces, like a cotton shorts-and-camisole set, and then paired them with something more polished—a gorgeous plaid Smythe blazer and exquisite white Aquazzura heels, for example. That's very much my approach to dressing.

How was it seeing the world of Barry's Bay and these characters you created for Every Summer After come to life on-screen?

It was incredible. I grew up on the lake in Barry's Bay, and the book is very personal to me. I didn't intend on publishing it when I wrote it in 2020. It was a creative project I did for myself. So to be here just six years later with a TV show based on that novel is truly extraordinary.

Was there a moment from the book you were particularly excited to see play out in the show?

There's a scene I call the "You came home" scene, where Percy and Sam see each other for the first time as adults. It's the first big emotional wallop of the book and a fan-favorite moment. It's re-created beautifully in the show.

You are known as the queen of the summer romance. What other reads or shows are on your radar this summer?

I'm currently reading Whistler by Ann Patchett and listening to the audiobook for Beartown by Fredrik Backman. I was just in Banff for the World Media Festival and the Rockie Awards. The Quebec TV series Empathie walked home with a ton of awards. It's a dramedy set in a psychiatric hospital and looks absolutely incredible. It's next on my watch list.

What I love about this formula is that it also contains jojoba, castor, and sunflower seed oils, shea butter and niacinamide, so it makes your cheeks look so plump and juicy.

If you're after a specific lip product, let me introduce you to the HAUS Labs PhD Hybrid Lip Oil. I'm a big fan of lip oils, and this has quickly become a new favourite. The texture is perfect. Style Notes: Pencil skirts have undergone quite the evolution recently. Regarded as slightly passé and matronly in the mid-10s, a new cohort of chic style savants has proved just how razor sharp and ultra refined the shape is, just as they were viewed back in the ‘90s.

On screen, it served a crucial role in the working women’s wardrobe in stylish corporate mavens like Rachel Green and Charlotte York. For celebrity styling duo Wayman Bannerman and Micah McDonald, the creative-director shake-ups could be a good thing when it comes to putting together looks for their clients during award season. "I actually think it will be a better award season because of that," Bannerman said. The duo known as Wayman and Micah has a stacked roster to dress. The pair works with some of the most in-demand stars in the entertainment industry, from Chase Infiniti to Colman Domingo.

On the latest episode of The Who What Wear Podcast, they share how they started working with Infiniti, how they take a look from sketch to reality, and more.

Can we speak about your girl Chase [Infiniti] for a moment? How did you guys start working together?

Micah McDonald: We knew that she was new, and we wanted to make sure that she was gonna feel taken care of and looked after versus just styled and explaining the industry from a place of compassion and excitement versus these existential "This is what you need to do. This is how this is gonna need to go, and if you don't go with us, you're just gonna go into oblivion," you know?

The meeting was great. It was a Saturday afternoon. Later that day, we just got a callback from her publicist. She said, "She has never made a decision this easy." She got off the phone, and she said, "I'm not meeting with anyone else. It's absolutely them."

We talk about custom a lot on this podcast, but we don't actually get to see what the real sketches look like, so I want to start with the beautiful Chase Infiniti at this year's Met Gala in custom Thom Browne.

MM: I mean, this is the best version of "what I ordered versus what came"—even the journey of this [and] every step along the way of them just adding and building onto the sketch and really listening to all of our "Ooh, what if?"-s

Wayman Bannerman: We took the inspiration of color from this Jamaican artist named Tamara Madden. She really experiments with color, and she uses color in the Black diaspora to really show African American women and the heritage of their women in a very prominent light and figure. So we took inspiration from her. We sent that over to Thom Browne, and they really captured what we wanted to convey with the theme and put it into a sketch.

Do you feel great now that all of the creative directors just about have landed? … It has been a little bit of a complicated time in the industry, only in that creative directors have been moving around. It takes a beat for them to settle in. Now, it feels like "Okay, we're a collection or two in. People are settling in." Do you feel like this is going to be an even better award season because of that?

WB: I actually think it will be a better award season because of that. Once they've settled in, some designers and creative directors are learning how the award-season campaigns work.

When you come from different houses that don't usually produce award-season looks, it's a trial-and-error process to learn how fast it can move and the pressure behind it as well. They're learning how to receive that pressure and how to produce creative work within that short time span, which we probably didn't see … from them in the previous season. I think it could be enlightening to see what they produce, and we're always excited to see new collections regardless. Seeing what designers do in new houses, also in the award space, could be very rewarding and gratifying to the audiences that love and adore those moments as well.

MM: Again, if you're not a house that's used to [being] able to produce shows and capsule collections, you need to bust out multiple customs week after week. I can only imagine … the learning curve that's had to take place.

I'm excited about the ease.

I always say this, and I probably should stop saying it because it's never taken place. But me and Wayman love to know what our award season remotely looks like before we go on Thanksgiving. Maybe this year might be the year.

There's something about yellow nails under the sunshine that feels so right. Yes, that's right, Fashion people have been experimenting with the primary color for several seasons, and celebrities like Rihanna can't stop putting it on their nails. When the music video for Hayley Kiyoko's viral female queer anthem "Girls Like Girls" debuted on YouTube 11 years ago, Thai American Myra Molloy was 17 and living with her family in Bangkok. On the corners of the internet of American pop culture, Molloy, an aspiring actress at the time, came across Kiyoko and saw in her an idol. Watching Kiyoko, who is Japanese American, out there doing her thing was inspiring. Ten years later, an audition for Girls Like Girls, the feature film directed by Kiyoko, arrived in Molloy's inbox. It was a full-circle moment that still has the rising star floored today.

Inspired by the breakthrough 2015 music video and 2023 NYT best-selling novel of the same name, Girls Like Girls is the coming-of-age story following 17-year-old Coley (a fabulous Maya da Costa), who is forced to move in with her estranged father in rural Oregon after the sudden loss of her mother. Grappling with grief, she meets Sonya (a captivating Molloy), a popular girl with an on-again, off-again boyfriend. The two develop an immediate spark after spending a summer together and must confront the truths and fears of their feelings.

In their first lead roles, Molloy and da Casta are fantastic, delivering some of the most authentically vulnerable and heartfelt performances we've seen in a while. We immediately zeroed in on Molloy and couldn't take our eyes off of her. In casting the two newcomers as Coley and Sonya, Kiyoko not only shows Hollywood that two half-Asian women can lead a film with themes of queer joy and identity, but she also turns the spotlight on two exceptional actors who have exciting careers ahead of them.

Here, we speak with Molloy about exercising free will, feeling deeply with Kiyoko, and all the ways Girls Like Girls made her dreams come true.

What was your first impression of the "Girls Like Girls" music video?

Oh my goodness, it's so nostalgic—that era of YouTube too. I feel like anyone born in the '90s or early 2000s… YouTube was our home pre-Vine, pre-TikTok, pre–all these things. I felt so transported, and I thought the music video was a cinematic masterpiece. I was like, "This woman has a vision, and this song is a banger," and it was just so beautiful to watch. It's such a testament to Hayley's very crystal-clear vision and perseverance that she was able to take that essence and turn it into a feature film over the course of 10-plus years. I really commend her. I start some things, and then the next day, I'm over it. And she stuck it through in such an insane, beautiful way and really stuck the landing. I'm just constantly in awe of her. It really is so cool that this song was brought to life in so many different mediums and how she was able to expand on the story for each of them. No one's doing it like her.

I heard you originally auditioned for Coley until Kiyoko saw your tape and immediately said, "She's Sonya."

When you get the email as an actor, you see the project, you see the role, and then immediately, my brain was viewing it through the lens of Coley because I was like, "Okay, I'm gonna lock in with what they're requiring of me." Even reading the scripts, I was reading it through the lens of Coley, and I was so touched. I was so moved by it.

I wrote something out for Hayley, which I don't usually do because I'm embarrassed, but I think the message for me, if I can impart anything, is we should all exercise our free will more. If you feel something, you should say something. And I expressed to her how moved I was by the script and by Coley's story. When she told me that she wanted me to read for Sonya, initially I was like, "Oh my goodness. Wait, that never even crossed my mind." And then reading over it again through Sonya's POV, I was like, "Yeah, you're right." I think I see myself in both characters, and that's the beauty of this film. … No matter where you stand in the relationship or in your life, you can see yourself in both characters. But I really resonated with Sonya. I was so excited to bring a misunderstood character to life. As humans, we all experience things for the first time, and we make mistakes, and we stumble. I really saw so much of myself in Sonya.

How did all the different mediums of Girls Like Girls influence your performance? Did you have a conversation with Kiyoko that really put things into place for you?

Having the reference with you at all times is kind of wild. … Hayley is the director and writer and was always there as a sounding board of like, "Hey, what if we did it this way?" Or I would try something, and Hayley would be like, "Actually, I liked what you did better." I'm so lucky to have Hayley as my big feature-debut director because she is so collaborative. She's probably the most empathetic person I've ever met. Every time I see her, someone's crying, either me or her. She just feels so deeply, and I feel so deeply, and the story has such emotional depth.

Whether it's referencing the book or referencing the aesthetic of the song and music video or just her personal story, having her there and being able to talk to her and ask, Does this feel true? Is this working, or is what I'm bringing to the table as Myra and my choice working for what you envision for Sonya? Sometimes, it didn't work; sometimes, it did work. It was an amalgamation of both, but it was just really cool to have her there. Beyond her being the encyclopedia of all things Girls Like Girls, it really shows in a project when a director really cares, when a writer really cares, when the actors really care. And not to be corny, but to be corny, I think that's [Hayley's] superpower—being able to conjure the care and love out of people because that's just who she is. We just wanted to do Girls Like Girls justice.

Talk to me about working with Maya da Costa, who plays Coley. You both are newcomers in this industry.

She's the sweetest girl in the world. We got to hang out a bit off set because [Kelowna, Canada] is such a small town. We would spend the weekends going to the lake together. Also, sometimes with Hayley, we would get coffee. We would get to know each other, but I feel like the bulk of getting to know each other was through the story, and by the end of the film, we were really close and had shared a lot of things. It's special how you get to know someone, and it's tangential to your character getting to know them too. So it felt method-y in the sense that I'm sussing you out, and you're also sussing me out, and it's also happening on film and in my life. But I felt our chemistry and our friendship [were] always there. Everything felt very divine. Everything felt like it was meant to happen. I felt very lucky and blessed in that situation.

Did you have a favorite scene that you worked on together?

I have favorite scenes I worked on with Hayley, and I have favorite scenes I worked on with Maya. Maya is such a gracious scene partner, and you're lucky when the coverage is on you, if you get an actor that really delivers and really is still there with you. Maya is such a wonderful actress and scene partner and person, so that was very effortless. Shooting the train track scenes where they're laying on the ground just having that heart-to-heart, it was truly a moment where I felt the world stood still. You could hear everything, and everyone was so quiet and so locked in, and I was locked in. I was just so moved by Maya, and I thought that was so special.

But also, working with Hayley on the scenes where we had to do pickups was so fun. Hayley was always like, "Myra, my girl, you're my closer," because I work super well under pressure. Maybe I'm a masochist. I love working under pressure. Put me in an Instant Pot. I will deliver. We would always do B-roll scenes or extra footage, and I would be at the end of the day, and we would just bang them out, and me and Hayley would be like, "Yeah, we got it." It was just so fun to do that with Hayley. I really had the best time that summer.

Kiyoko has spoken on how proud she is that both leads of the film are half Asian and to have that representation. What does being cast in this project mean to you?

Oh my goodness. It's still so surreal. I can't believe that it's happening or that it even happened. I think that's why I went up to [Hayley] at the end of the chemistry read and was like, "Thank you so much. Have a great life." … I was like, "Maya is half Asian. I'm half Asian. I don't know if Hollywood is gonna allow that." I just wanted to be a supporter of the film, so when I heard that I was also cast, I was so shocked because I was like, "Oh my goodness, is this really happening—us in a studio feature representing our culture and our upbringing on the big screen in America? That's crazy." That's something you dream of but never thought would happen because my narrative for most of my 20s was "I'm always just gonna play the supporting best friend. I'm always going to play a small, minor character" because I feel like they're not ready to see two Asian leads. They're not ready to see that kind of representation that actually reflects our reality. So when this happened, I was floored. I'm so excited for people to come see the film and feel seen alongside themes of queer joy and coming of age and identity and first love and all that. I'm so glad I get to see it in my lifetime and be a part of it.

The soundtrack for the film is amazing. Do you have a favorite song?

My favorite song off the soundtrack is actually "Lakeside." It sounds very Imogen Heap–y. I also produced and wrote a song on the soundtrack as well. I scored one of the songs—no big deal. Just Kiyoko making all my dreams come true. She's crazy for that. She did the whole sound [for the film]. I just don't know if she's a human being. Sometimes, I'm just like, "Let us crack under there."

How was it seeing the finished film for the first time?

It's so surreal because, of course, when you're in front of the camera, you have no idea what's going on behind the camera. It's not like they're showing us playback on set because there's no time, so the first time seeing it was crazy. I always say the film is made in the edit. I don't think the general patron of cinema knows how powerful the edit is. The editor genuinely can make or break a film, and I think they did a banging job. It really hit me how beautiful the film is—not just aesthetically but sonically and emotionally. The entire world-building of it is so cohesive and so genuinely expressive and colorful, and that's Hayley in cinema form. I was crying. We were just a small crew, short shoot days. We're making an indie film. And then you see it, and you're like, "Oh my goodness, we made a film film. This is cinema." I just know that's a labor of love if I've ever seen one.

It's dreamy, summer nostalgia vibes.

This might be the hottest take, but I'm so sick of seeing iPhones and seeing your age. I'm sorry. I don't wanna see it. But the flip phones, the desktop, the AIM of it all—that was also my childhood, so I was like, "I love that." Like waiting for my crush to come online.

I was perusing your Instagram and got the sense that you're very comfortable and talented behind the camera with your photography. Do you have aspirations to direct one day?

This is my favorite question. I'm not even lying. I love framing a shot. Films that people usually don't like I love because they're really slow and really beautifully shot. Perfect Days by Wim Wenders is one of my favorite films. I always say in another life, I would have loved to be a cinematographer. I would love to be a DP. But I did say that after seeing [Hayley] direct this film, I never want to be a director. Oh my god, that is so hard. She has the patience of… I don't even know what to compare it to. I thought I had a lot of patience, but we saw her deal with every department—front, middle, behind, back camera, people not even there—and having to manage and make all these micro-decisions and have it all together and also be emotionally available and support us and have time for herself. I was just like, "Bro, I don't think I can be a director. I'm happy to assist the director." So [I'll] be in front of the camera or help frame something up, but doing the conducting? Absolutely not. I'll just stick to home videos and film photography. … Shout-out to all the directors.

Taking place just before the summer solstice, the trip really kicked off the season for me, getting me in the mood for a few sun-soaked holidays and months of long (occasionally lazy) and balmy days back home in London.

The trip turned out to be far more beautiful and curated than I expected, and Hydra really caught me by surprise. If you've never been, please look to book a trip immediately. A small, special island off the coast of Athens, it's just one hour by ferry and doesn't have any cars—just donkeys! It's like stepping back in time. The pop-up Mango boutique was thoughtfully designed with whitewashed walls and vibrant blue tiles, showcasing a selection of the brand's standout womenswear and home accessories.

Of course, I wore Mango from dusk till dawn. From the elevated styles in the latest Selection edit to the collaboration with Eckhaus Latta that has fashion girls frothing at the mouth, there was a look for every occasion. Style Notes: For dinner, we enjoyed a rooftop experience at the National Museum of Contemporary Art in Athens. With views of the city and the Acropolis, we had drinks as the sun set, before sitting down for dinner. After dark, we danced all night whilst sipping Mango-flavoured cocktails—sublime!

Style Notes: After a night in Athens, we ventured to Hydra. One ferry and a lunch later, and there we were. I wore the Eckhaus Latta trousers with a skirt overlay, with flip-flops and a boho-style blouse. I've had my eye on the trousers since they dropped, and knew I needed them. They sit low on the hips and are so comfy—perfect for travelling in.

Style Notes: For our pre-dinner drinks, we visited the Hydra pop-up store. I wore a long white linen skirt, a lace camisole from the Selection edit and the same shirt from the night before. I sized up in the lace cami for a loose fit, and so it would work for beach days over a bikini in the future. As Hydra is completely cobbled, I paired this outfit with flip-flops, although I would have liked to wear the Eckhaus Latta orange wedges, but I'll have to save those for another day.

Dinner and Outdoor Cinema: Just Add Accessories

Style Notes: For dinner on the coast, I wore the same outfit and added a few accessories. I ditched the flip-flops for a heel, popped on a shell chain belt and a sculptural necklace, and grabbed this beautiful beaded bag, which I know will get a lot of use this summer. After dinner, the Mango team held an outdoor screening of the French film La Piscine. The screen was set on the rocks just above the sea. It was the perfect end to a perfect day.

When the weather climbs above 25 degrees, I sport a juicy, vibrant nail colour. It happens like clockwork—I feel the sun on my face, then feel the urge to book a nail appointment. And I know I'm not alone! It's incredibly common to celebrate changing temperatures with a fun nail colour, and summer inspires all the fresh, playful, tropical-themed hues.
