3 Outfits Later and Your Fall Wardrobe Is Set

Call it the back-to-school effect—the minute September issues take over the newsstands, it feels like a cue to box up our white linen dresses and get straight to fall shopping. But before you go on a full summer purge, put down your wallet for a moment and take note of the trends we're carrying over from last season as well as the must-have pieces we're picking up for fall.

You may not actually need to buy everything in sight if you go in with our game plan. In fact, these three great outfits are proof you can squeeze a whole lot of essential fall trends into just three outfits. We went to Nordstrom to pick up of-the-moment and functional pieces to upgrade our three main getting-dressed occasions—work, evening and weekend—and trust us when we say you're going to want them all. Curious? Keep reading to see our picks.

Out and About

Whether you have a few girls' nights penciled in or you're expecting to attend parties every weekend, nothing really beats a chic jeans-and-top outfit. For fall, we're updating our no-fail outfits with sleeker silhouettes but still carrying over some of our favorite trends, like an off-the-shoulder silhouette.

We're so happy the off-the-shoulder look isn't going anywhere, but we're getting a little more tailored for fall. Go for an off-the-shoulder blazer with an exposed zipper for a chic touch that elevates your look. When worn with statement earrings, you look like a street style star and you also bring all the attention to your décolletage.

Another piece we're *so* excited to still wear is raw-cut, uneven-hemmed denim. If you don't have a pair by now, it's time to invest along with of-the-moment V-cut, square-toe pumps. The shoes are an update on basic black heels, and we love this combo for a night out because a) you know you're going to be comfortable and b) can you ever beat a denim-and-pumps pairing? Add a pop of print (and on-trend burgundy) with your mini clutch and you're good to go.

Work It

Always looking for office-appropriate ways to bring your sense of style to work with you? We're updating our 9-to-5 wardrobes by adding trend-led pieces to our favorite workweek staples.

We recently discovered how flattering belting our blazers can be, and last season we fell in love with circular hardware on our accessories. If there's one new thing we know about fall, it's that red is everything. If you're not ready to dip your toes into a daring all-red look, try a bright belt for a touch of color.

And finally: Slides are here to stay. But to get our favorite footwear ready for fall, we're turning to textured heathered grays with silver hardware that feel as professional and pulled together as a pair of pumps.

Weekend Getaway

Brit girls, this one's for you. We're taking a page out of style setters' travel books and eyeing heritage prints, clever layering, and a black-and-white color palette to keep our weekend looks chic.

First things first: Layer, layer, layer. We're so glad we invested in all those turtlenecks last season, because now we're wearing a bouclé coat over our plaid blazer and sneaking in some color with a burgundy turtleneck underneath. You can peel off (or put back on) the layers as the weather permits.

We're constantly looking for pieces that are just as versatile as they are chic, so a crossbody that doubles as a clutch is a no-brainer. Be sure to also layer your black and white patterns and textures, to add dimension to your easy-to-wear weekend look.
