You’ve probably noticed by now that when it comes to trends, we put a lot of emphasis on what the stylish set of NYC girls thinks of them. That’s because aside from being a city known for its covetable style, it’s also one that knows a practical trend when it sees one. Blame it on the weather, walking, or whatever else you like, but I think we can all agree that this is pretty true.

So, with summer weather in full swing but fall fashion really on all our minds, we thought we’d take a look at the biggest trends for the upcoming season and dissect which will be the biggest in the Big Apple. As a transplant of two-ish years, I’d like to pat myself on the back for thinking like a real New Yorker on this one—and, of course, harassing everyone else in the office for their two cents. Nonetheless, simply continue on to see each trend, read about it, and of course shop!

Unlike in many other parts of the country (ahem, Southern California), fall in NYC is actually, well, cold, so any outerwear trend that lends itself to real warmth is sure to be a hit. Enter the return of oversize outerwear.

Animal Instincts

While the stereotype that New Yorkers love dressing in black is arguably somewhat true, unlike many other prints, animal (including leopard, cheetah, zebra, and more for this season) lends itself perfectly to an otherwise neutral outfit, even wardrobe.

Incredible Iridescence

Evolved from the omnipresent PVC trend of recent seasons, the high-shine, iridescent materials stealing the spotlight this fall are not only conveniently weather-resistant but, as a somewhat-comical bonus, offer their reflective services for all the walking through traffic NYC girls will do in the city both day and night.

Editor-at-Large

Since starting as an intern back in 2013, Nicole Akhtarzad Eshaghpour has held several roles here at Who What Wear, and she is currently Editor-at-Large. It was a less expected route, seeing as she was graduating from business school at USC when this all began, but it has turned out to be the best one for her. Fast-forward to 2020, and she's moved to NYC from her hometown of Beverly Hills and spends her workdays a little differently from when she was an intern starting out. Currently, she focuses on a weekly mélange of shopping content. As far as her personal style goes, she's largely drawn to classic pieces and neutral basics but will always make an exception for something colorful, printed, or bejeweled as long as it's deemed worthy enough. After all, the only thing she loves more than a good party is dressing up for one. On weekdays, she can usually be found at home eating something delicious for dinner and trying to force her husband to watch 90 Day Fiancé.
