Eva Mendes is known for being an under-the-radar celeb, and in a pretty rare interview with Latina, the actress gets personal with a touching story about the name both her daughters share. "My grandmother’s name is Amada, and Esmeralda Amada is the name of our oldest," she explains. "We had a few names picked out for our new baby, and when she was born, we didn’t feel like those names were her."
After giving birth to Esmeralda, Mendes told Violet Grey the meaning of the name Amada. "Her middle name is Amada, which was my grandmother’s name. It means 'beloved' in Spanish." She also tells Latina that she and husband Ryan Gosling brainstormed a few other names, "But we just kept going back to Amada." She laughs about the fact that she had to explain to her husband that two family members sharing the same name is very common in Latin culture (Eva and her mom share a same first name) .
Beyond that, the couple felt an emotional connection with their newborn and the name they kept coming back to. "We thought, how beautiful to go with what made us emotional and with what felt like her. When we looked at her, we thought, "Aww, Amadita," she says.
