What Everyone Should Wear to the Emmys (If We Ruled the World)

The countdown to the 2014 Emmys red carpet has begun—stay tuned for our live coverage this afternoon!—which begs the question: What will television’s leading ladies wear, or better yet, what should they wear to the big event? Up for a challenge, we pulled out our crystal ball and made some predictions of our own. Keep reading to see our pairings, and don’t forget to tell us whom you’re most excited to see on the red carpet tonight!

WHO: Kerry Washington
WHAT: Nominated for Outstanding Lead Actress in a Drama Series for Scandal
WEAR: Chanel Look 49 from the Fall 14 Couture collection
?
WHY: What better way for Washington to show off her killer post baby bod than with this look-at-me-now sequin Chanel number?

WHO: Lizzy Caplan
WHAT: Nominated for Outstanding Lead Actress in a Drama Series for Masters of Sex
WEAR: Zuhair Murad Look 15 from the Fall 14 Couture collection
WHY: It’s Caplan’s first time to the Emmys, so we suspect she’ll make a splashy statement in the form of this sultry black-and-white number. Here’s hoping we see some serious left leg.

WHO: Claire Danes
WHAT: Nominated for Outstanding Lead Actress in a Drama Series for Homeland
WEAR: J. Mendel Look 15 from the Fall 14 Couture collection
WHY: Danes opted for a plunging neckline last year, so clearly she’s not afraid of showing a little skin on the red carpet. The subtle peek-a-boo cut of this diaphanous J. Mendel gown will have everyone oohing and aahing.

WHO: Taylor Schilling
WHAT: Nominated for Outstanding Lead Actress in a Comedy Series for Orange Iis the New Black
WEAR: Roland Mouret Look 11 from the Resort 15 collection
WHY: Our reasoning here is quite simple: Schilling has worn the designer for her last two appearances, which could have been the precursor to a very stylish Emmy ensemble. This floor-grazing teal number is subtly sexy and entirely chic, guaranteeing a top spot on the best-dressed lists.

WHO: Sarah Hyland
WHAT: Nominated for Outstanding Comedy Series for Modern Family
WEAR: Elie Saab Look 19 from the F/W 14 collection
WHY: While the young actress has been rotating among a series of flirty, fashion-forward numbers as of late—see her outfit changes at the Teen Choice Awards—we have a hunch she’ll reach for something a little more glamorous, like this ethereal Elie Saab gown, for the red carpet.

WHO: Kristen Wiig
WHAT: Nominated for Outstanding Lead Actress in a Miniseries or Movie for The Spoils of Babylon
WEAR: Emilio Pucci Look 44 from the F/W 14 collection
WHY: Wiig and minimal silhouettes go together like Gilly and her big pink bow. But since it is the biggest night in television, we can see the actress turning it up a notch with neutral embellishments and an interesting neckline.

WHO: Lena Headey
WHAT: Nominated for Outstanding Supporting Actress in a Drama Series for Game of Thrones
WEAR: Marchesa Look 32 from the F/W 14 collection
WHY: We’re hoping that this year Headey will trade in her go-to black gown for a more striking hue. In a dramatic shade of orange, this embellished dress is one that even Cersei couldn’t resist.

WHO: Sofia Vergara
WHAT: Presenter & nominee for Outstanding Comedy Series for Modern Family
WEAR: Nina Ricci Look 23 from the Resort 15 collection
WHY: An Emmys red carpet without a va-va-voom Sofia Vergara moment would be like New Year’s Eve without champagne—it’s just not as good. Though this gorgeous gown makes a quiet statement, it drives all the attention to the actress’ bombshell looks.

WHO: Michelle Dockery
WHAT: Nominated for Outstanding Lead Actress in a Drama Series for Downton Abbey
WEAR: Zac Posen Look 5 from the Resort 15 collection
WHY: The formula for a memorable Dockery fashion moment is this: a sleek silhouette that fits her body perfectly, plus an interesting embellishment for that wow factor.

WHO: Zooey Deschanel
WHAT: Presenter
WEAR: Oscar de la Renta Look 55 from the F/W 14 collection
WHY: From the bold polka-dot print to the ruffled skirt, this feminine number is every bit as whimsical as Deschanel herself.
