You know how people say that connections are everything? We agree: but not necessarily in the way you might think. For the two of us it’s not about the connections that get you a job or a dinner reservation, but rather the kind of conversations we’ve been lucky enough to have with the amazing people who visit our site. Lots of you have been with us for ages—our seventh birthday is coming up this fall!—as we’ve fallen in love with all kinds of trends and tastemakers, many of whom we’re just as crazy about today (leather moto jackets and Kate Moss, we’re looking at you) as we were when we started the site. We appreciate how passionate you are and get so excited to share things with you, which leads us to today’s story, our inaugural instalment of Editors’ Letter. We just wanted to take a moment each month to talk about a few of the things that are popping up on our radar and give you a behind-the-scenes look at what we’re excited about in the office right now. From new projects to cool debuts to classic go-tos, we’re so thrilled to turn the spotlight on a few of our favourite things and hope you adore them too!
To say we’re beauty fanatics is unquestionably an understatement. We are devotees of the highest order, but never could find exactly the sort of accessible yet high-end editorial content we wanted. So naturally, we decided to make it ourselves and voila—Byrdie! Helmed by the incomparable Britt Aboutaleb, the site offers the best in celebrity beauty coverage, trends, products, tricks, experts, and tips, all in one incredibly beautiful package. Call it parental pride, but we think it’s really special and hope you love it as much as we do.
2. Jimmy Choo Anouk Suede Pointy Toe Pumps ($595) in Emerald
Pointy toe pumps are a bit of an obsession of ours—between the two of us, we own more pairs than it is advisable to admit—so it's not hard to imagine our reaction to Jimmy Choo's signature pumps in a stunning new shade of green. The vibrant emerald hue is new for fall, completely on-trend for the season, and unquestionably gorgeous right now with a hint of a summer (faux) tan.
3. Lucky’s September Issue
If there’s one thing you need to do this month, it’s this: run to your newsstand and buy the September issue of Lucky magazine. (It’s technically available on August 6th.) Featuring the one and only Blake Lively on the cover, it’s the first issue from the magazine’s new editor-in-chief, Eva Chen. Yes, she’s a pal, but she’s also one of the most talented, gracious, vivacious, quick, and kind people in the entire industry. We wish her much continued success and are so excited to see how Lucky continues to evolve under her guidance. Viva Eva!
4. Elizabeth and James Bags
The wait is over: after much anticipation and fanfare, Elizabeth and James' debut handbag collection is finally hitting stores—and we couldn't be more excited. Pieces like the Shopper Bag ($625) and Satchel ($625) have just the sort of clean lines and luxurious materials we've come to expect from designers Mary-Kate and Ashley Olsen. Smitten doesn't even begin to cover it… ?
5. 501 Interpretations ($55)
?In honour of Levi's 140th anniversary, Levi's is releasing their ode to 501s, the limited-edition book 501 Interpretations. Featuring 501 photographs of fashion insiders, luminaries, and icons—Kate Bosworth, ELLE's Joe Zee, Wiz Khalifa, to name a few—this is a stunning ode to the classic jean. We were particularly pleased to see two of our favourite New York editors made the cut: way to go Andrew Bevan & Jane Herman!
6. Katherine Power's 10 Favourite Home Items
Have you checked out our new home site Domaine lately? We sure hope so! If you need another reason to visit, here's a good one: to see Katherine's favourite 10 home décor items. She shared everything she can't live without—from her staple candle to the perfect white sheets—it's a must-see!
7. Denim Refinery
Clearly denim is on our minds these days, which explains our next notable: Denim Refinery. The LA-based site has the coolest curation of vintage Levi's in all the right styles—and that combo is definitely hard to come by online. Be sure to check out the site for affordable 501s, boyfriend jeans, and jean shorts with the perfect '90s-inspired look.
8. Jacquie Aiche Kitty Ring ($1050)
First knuckle rings are still definitely having a moment, but if you're looking for something truly next level, we have a hunch you'll love this Jacquie Aiche ring with diamond pave ears. Katherine’s ring (a birthday present from her awesome friend and writer/actress/designer extraordinaire Katie Nehra) is shown in yellow gold, but it’s also available in a slew of different metals, so there's sure to be a version that suits your (cat) fancy perfectly.
9. Lisa Marie Fernandez Bikinis
Summer may be winding down—kinda, sorta, shhhh let's not think about it—but bikinis are still on our minds. Chiefly, Lisa Marie Fernandez's suits, which range from vintage-influenced, high-waisted styles to simple, colour-blocked options that are so stunning, they might make you forget about Eres. Almost.
10. Duri Nail Polish ($6) in Call Me Maybe
What’s new and neon coral and necessary for summer? An amazing nail polish from cult beauty brand Duri. The shade is spot-on for summer while the name, well, let’s just say it definitely has our number.
