I’m a uniform dude. On any given day, you’ll find me in a variation of the same thing: a light jacket, black T-shirt, black skinny jeans, and some sort of sneaker. My mother scolds me (keep in mind, I’m in my late 20s), constantly telling me to step out of the box, but I just can’t—despite being a fashion editor. Recently, however, I did throw her a bone with a wardrobe switch-up that changed my sartorial life.
After spotting a few girls during Fashion Week wearing Dr. Martens, I got inspired. Sure, the cult Brit brand has been around since the ‘60s and resurged heavily in the ‘90s (hellooo, Gwen Stefani), but I never really thought the clunksters were my thing—until now. I ventured to the mall—Journeys, to be exact—and picked up my very first pair just two months ago. To break from my traditional dark look, I opted for a shiny metallic iteration, rather than basic black (note: the shiny accent make these look way more expensive than the $110 they really are). The result? Insanity.
Makes sense though: They’re cool, unexpected, and feel so of the moment, despite the #throwback nature. I’m not lying when I say I had 15 (yes, 15!) people come up to me in one day complimenting my shoe of choice and asking where to get them. Naturally, I decided I needed more—I could get used to that flattery. Since then, I scooped up a silver metallic pair and an all-white find, both of which have gotten similar responses.
While the intention here isn’t necessarily to turn you into a mini-Bobby (totally fine if you want to, though), I will say that incorporating Dr. Martens into an everyday look is my best-kept style secret. And fortunately, so easy to attain if you so desire—perhaps before everyone else starts kicking it in clunky shoes next fall, ammiright, Alexander Wang?
