There are certain style decrees fashion people rely on to ensure they always look their best. The Clique Theory, anyone? Well, another that I swear by (hey, guys!) is the “Double-Up Rule.”
When you think about your wardrobe, there are undoubtedly a few certain items you cherish above others—perhaps it’s that perfect pair of black ankle boots and the one blazer that fits you flawlessly. So think about it: If you love something so much, you’ll probably be super bummed once that piece eventually wears out.
That’s where the doubling-up idea comes into play. Adore something? Buy two of that item to keep as backup so you’re always armed with your go-to pieces. As I’ve experienced, it’s the simplest way to always love your closet and therefore feel confident in the way you look, knowing you can always reach for your must-haves. (FYI, I tend to double up on my favorite white Stan Smiths and Kenneth Cole shoes so there’s always backup once a pair is beaten into the ground.)
Now, don’t get me wrong, I’m 100% on board with the idea of minimizing your closet and only stocking pieces you love in general, but if you really really love something, I personally think it’s totally acceptable to add a few extra items into your offering.
Keep scrolling to learn more about this rule—and shop must-haves totally worthy of doubling up on. Note: The items below highlight the type of picks that could work for doubling up, and there are similar finds out there no matter your budget.
You can’t go wrong with a pair of Stan Smiths—slip into a pair and you’ll instantly look that much cooler.
There’s a reason a striped tee is a classic. You can wear one a zillion different ways—with jeans and sneakers for the weekend, layered under a blazer for work, and so on.
If you find your perfect pair of ankle boots, buy two—this is one shoe style you’ll wear on rotation throughout the year.
It can take years to find your absolute perfect pair of jeans, so when you do, purchase a second pair to ensure you don’t have to go searching again. We’re loving these cool distressed skinnies right now, by the way.
You can’t deny the power of a crisp, tailored blazer like this iteration from Reiss. Incorporate one into your work look and we guarantee you’ll feel even more confident.
Our editors practically live in Equipment tops like this lace-up option—they’re soft, flattering, and can go with everything from jeans to a skirt to a pair of trousers.
The LBD is the one dress style you’ll legit wear all the time, so if you spot your ideal iteration (like this pretty H&M pick), nab two just in case you have a last-minute event and your first is at the dry-cleaner!
The bridge-bar detail on these sunglasses are current and modern. (P.S., we all lose or break sunglasses at some point, so sunnies are definitely worth doubling up on).
It’s no secret that leggings are once again becoming an off-duty staple. So if you plan on wearing multiple days in a row, have a few pairs on hand to avoid washing all the time and wearing them out.
Have a favorite denim jacket like this one from Madewell? Well, you'd certainly be upset if you left it somewhere accidently—so if your favorite jacket is affordable, double up on it so you always have it on hand.
