Sydney vs. NYC: How Different Cities Dress for a Girls' Night Out

We love looking to international cities for style inspiration, but also to discover what makes them different. We recently looked at how international cities do basics, and today, we’re curious about the difference between Sydney and NYC dressing for a night out. To help us figure it out (because we’re in Sydney, not NYC), we enlisted the help of New York City-based model Gabby Westbrook. The New Zealand-born beauty has worked with some of the biggest names in the industry—Zimmermann, Camilla and Marc, Versace, Ralph Lauren, and Dolce & Gabbana (to name a few), and we’re predicting this is the only the beginning for her.

Keep scrolling to read our interview with the model-on-the-rise about how NYC girls dress differently to Sydney girls, her winter go-to outfit, and why fashion is important.

Who What Wear Australia: What’s your go-to outfit for a night out in winter?

Gabby Westbrook-Patrick: Leather pants, black turtleneck sweater, and over-the-knee boots. I would describe my winter style as chic, effortless but always practical, especially in New York where you can’t afford not to be.

WWW: How do NYC girls dress differently to Sydney girls for a ‘night out’?

GW: My ‘night out’ style in Sydney is definitely more toned down than my style in New York. When I’m in my hometown, I take ‘day to night’ very literally. I might be at the beach during the day and then head straight out to dinner and drinks with friends, so my style is usually very relaxed and a little more bohemian than in New York. New York is all about being effortlessly cool; I might wear a pair of jeans, a T-shirt and heels or a black slip dress and a red lip.

WWW: What are some of the best style tips you’ve learnt through working with so many amazing stylists?

GW: The right lingerie can really elevate an outfit, whether you’re trying to show your lingerie off or make it look like you’re wearing nothing underneath. I’ve never worked with a stylist who hasn’t come to set with a kit full of lingerie options.

WWW: What are your favourite trends for an Australian winter?

GW: I love wearing all denim in winter. It’s a nice way to break up all the dark colours in my winter wardrobe.

WWW: Do you have any outfit formulas or style rules that you live by?

GW: I know what I feel most comfortable in, and I know what works and what doesn’t work for my body. I stay within those lines, and then I play around with colour, texture, and print.

WWW: What are some of your go-to brands for day-to-day style?

GW: Rag & Bone for my basics, and then everything else is a collection of vintage, designer, or high street brands.

WWW: Where do you find style inspiration? Blogs? Instagram? Friends? Stylists?

GW: All of the above!

WWW: Why is fashion important to you?

GW: I love fashion because it gives you an identity and a place to express yourself. Feeling confident is important to me, and fashion plays a part in that. I wouldn’t feel myself if we had to wear a uniform.

WWW: Do you have any secret shopping haunts that you can share with us?

GW: I love Curve on Bond Street in NoHo. It’s a really well curated boutique that I think encapsulates New York style.
